God’s Plan for America’s Comeback

Although many people are unaware of it, Satan has a plan for America. He wants us to forget our godly heritage and slowly erase our rich, biblical foundation. We see the signs everywhere, God and prayer have been removed from schools and history books. God has been removed from our government except during times of emergency like September 11. Our Constitution has also been reinterpreted and re-written to change our Founders’ original intent. To take our moral temperature, all you have to do is turn on the television. Our society celebrates doing whatever they think is right, and sin is no longer called sin.

The good news is God also has a plan—and His plan is always greater. What is it? God’s Four-Step Recovery Plan In 2 Chronicles 7:14, the Lord says, “If My people, who are called by My name, shall humble themselves, pray, seek, crave, and require of necessity My face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven, forgive their sin, and heal their land.” God gives us four specific things to do: humble, pray, seek, and turn. This is our part of the process. As we do these things, then God will do His part to hear, forgive, and heal. Continued on Page 8

Andy Whitten, Family Man & Financial Advisor

A Father’s Impact

By Karen McBride

Andy Whitten is a family man and Financial Advisor at PFG Private Wealth Management, LLC (“PFG”). He moved to Tampa when he was 9 years old. They were living in Memphis, Tennessee when his father was invited to become the senior pastor at Idlewild Baptist Church. His father accepted the position, and the family moved to Tampa. Andy had the opportunity to return to his home state and attended the University of Memphis for two years, where he played baseball and met his future wife. He returned to Tampa and played baseball at the University of Tampa until graduating in 2003. He and his wife continued their long distance relationship until graduation, and then they were married.

He knew early on that finance would be his career path. “As a child, when everyone got their allowance and was spending it on ice cream, I was putting mine in my California Raisin piggy bank. I was intrigued with savings and dollars.” His interest in savings and his desire to help people led to his career in finance. “It made for a good fit.” said Andy. He joined PFG in February, 2016. His favorite part of his job is making complex things seem simple for people to help them get where they want to go. “Nothing is more rewarding than hearing someone say thank you for showing me my financial picture and reducing my stress.” The faith-based owners of PFG are actively involved in the community, with organizations such as Oasis Pregnancy Care Centers, Meals On Wheels, CASA (Community Action Stops Abuse), and more. In addition to his volunteering at Oasis Pregnancy Care Centers, Andy serves at Idlewild Baptist Church, where he is a coach, deacon, teacher, and a member of the finance committee. Andy and his wife Krystal have two children. Krystal is a gifted artist in calligraphy and handlettering scripture. She has created her own prayer journal that is now being sold in 30 different stores. To see her work, go to https://www.krystalwhitten.com. Samantha Taylor Samantha Taylor Fitness I wanted to mention what an impact my father had in my life, since its Father’s Day this month. They can certainly affect so many parts of our personality and who we are as people, and my father is one of the happiest, most positive people I have met and he is a great businessman. He always believed in me and he always told me I could do anything that I put my mind to and the funny thing is, my mother was that way as well. I am so grateful that I had parents like that because I know it’s affected where I am today, my business, and the fact that we just opened our fifth location and have served over 6,000 women in this community! I did a seminar at my studio a few years ago where he spoke and he talked about having dreams in your life and having goals. It was impactful because for 30 years, he always talked about how he wanted to retire and go on a sailboat and go to the Bahamas once a year. That was his dream, and he knew exactly how much money he needed and he knew how hard he had to work to get it. When he spoke at my seminar, he also spoke about those things but helped the women tie in how that’s the same thing for your weight loss. We just had another client break a record, and she lost 85 pounds in 11 months and she’s been very focused on the same things. It was surreal when we went to go get the boat of his dreams with our family, and as I was looking at the ocean remembering all the times he would tell me that he had this dream and he was going to make it happen. He even worked a couple years beyond retirement because he was going to make that goal happen. Well, I can say that he retired

at 71, he hit his goal, he bought his amazing boat and as we speak right now he is out in the ocean in the Bahamas! It’s just really impacted me to watch him talk about his dream and know exactly what he wanted, and to be able to go on the boat and celebrate his accomplishments was just such an amazing experience and such a testament to going after what you want. That is so similar to seeing what you want with your health and fitness in your body and setting a goal and taking action. And just like him out in the open blue waters of Bahamas, he and his wife are able to enjoy the efforts that he has put in over the last 30 years. And I can say that he is in great shape and I’m so proud of him that he’s taking such great care of his body. The conversation that we had about 10 years ago that he was turning into a marshmallow man got his attention. He is in amazing shape floating around the blue waters of the Bahamas. And how different it is to age in such a different way where you are not losing the quality of your life. So what are your goals? And what do you want to look back on in life a year from now and know that you accomplished what you set your mind to? I can tell you that if you don’t set your mind to something you’ll fall for anything and you will not have the success that you want. So if you need a place for women only to be supported, encouraged, lifted up, educated, and kept accountable to being healthy and fit, then go to www.SamanthaTaylorFitness.com so we can talk about mapping out plan to your success just like my dad did with his boat.

The Fruit of Righteousness

Dr. Douglas Wingate, Ph.D. Life Christian University The fruit of righteousness is really miracle answers to prayer. I want to share with you a part of my personal testimony in order to set up the topic that I would like to address. The year was 1973. I was 23 years old at the time. A friend who had received Jesus as their Lord challenged me to read the Bible and check out the claims of Jesus from the Gospels. I was a professional rock and roll drummer and living a life that was very far removed from what you would consider a Christian life, so this was a unique challenge. I remember reading the gospels of Mathew, Mark, and Luke, and thinking throughout each one, how cool it must have been for the disciples of Jesus traveling around with Him and seeing all of the healing miracles that He performed. I didn’t realize till just recently how God was setting me up for a call to the ministry, even back them at the beginning of my relationship with Christ. While reading the gospel of John, something started to change in my heart. After I read the words of Jesus from John 16:33, Jesus spoke to me personally. I read the words, “These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” Immediately after reading this, Jesus spoke to me and said, “Doug, I am alive, and I am the Lord.” I almost thought that I heard these words audibly, but I am sure that Jesus just spoke to me in my spirit. I got right out of my bed, knelt down and asked Jesus to come

into my life and be my Lord. That started me on a journey with the Lord in which I have witnessed literally thousands of miracles. Looking back now I realized that Jesus was delivering a shockwave of miracles for everyone to see with their own eyes, in order for their faith in Him to be as Paul described in 1 Corinthians 2:5 when he said, “that your faith should not be in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.” I am fully convinced that every man or woman of God who answered the Lord’s call into ministry originally desired to also see miracle healings just like the early church leaders saw in the first century. Somewhere along the line, some theologian, (I use the term loosely), convinced them that God was no longer in the healing business. He just did that through the early church in order to get it started with a bang. My question is, what about humans changed since then? Is it that we no longer get sick and no longer need to be healed? A trip to any local hospital will tell you differently. Any trip to a funeral home will answer the same question. Is modern medicine and insurance the best God has to offer to us today? I am writing this now to ministers that are tired of visiting their church members at the hospital and praying for God the guide the hands of the surgeon so that every thing turns out well. In the teaching that Jesus delivered in John 15 about abiding in the vine, when He says that by doing so, we would bear much fruit. In verse 7 and 8 he says, “If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you. By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples. Then in verse 16 He says, “You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask the Father in My name, He may give you.”

Here Jesus is plainly telling us that getting a miracle answer to our prayer is “bearing much fruit.” This should be contrasted with the fruit of the Spirit that Paul speaks about in Galatians 5:22,23, which is moral fruit, and the opposite of lusts of the flesh. Now I certainly believe that every Christian should strive to develop the fruit of the Spirit and walk free from the lusts of the flesh; but there is also the fruit of righteousness that will bring glory to God. In Philippians 1:11, after praying that their love would abound in knowledge and discernment, and that they would approve of things that are excellent, that they would be “filled with the fruits of righteousness which are by Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.” Then the Apostle James, the half brother of Jesus and the pastor of the church at Jerusalem, tells us in his epistle that when someone needs a healing that the should, “call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord, and the prayer of faith will save the sick and the Lord will raise him up. The effective, fervent prayer

of a righteous man avails much.” (Taken from James 5:14-16) In a nutshell, when Christians pray for one another for healing, and the Lord answers their prayer with His miraculous, healing intervention, it is a good thing that brings glory to God. Every time Jesus is able to do the miraculous in our lives, from the simplest answer to prayer for guidance, to the healing of a terminal disease where even the doctors have given up hope, Jesus is able to manifest His glory. For my part, I desire to see these fruits of righteousness on display more and more as a sign of the true revival power of God. Let’s contend together for this so that Jesus can be glorified among us. Doug Wingate is President of Life Christian University and conducts healing services every Thursday night at 7:00pm at 410 E. Life Insurance and “That Guy”

Andy Whitten PFG Private Wealth Management 18572 N Dale Mabry Hwy Lutz, FL 33548 Phone: 813-286-7776 If you’ve ever seen the movie Groundhog Day, you may recall the scene where Phil Connors (Bill Murray) runs into Ned Ryerson (Stephen Tobolowsky), an insurance salesman. Ned is a fast talker trying to sell life insurance from the word go. He starts out asking Phil if he has life insurance and stating that he could always use a little more. This was the first impression I had of life insurance agents and while incorrect, it didn’t exactly draw me to the idea of purchasing any for fear of running into “that guy.” There came two events in my life that prompted me to investigate life insurance: marriage and kids. In my college years, like most people, I spent most of what I had which was practically nothing, and if something happened to me then my siblings would have no problems dividing up the whopping $100 I had in my bank account. However, when I became responsible for someone else and eventually a couple of little people that now roam my house, I knew that I didn’t want to leave them in a near impossible situation. There are many myths about life insurance. Like me, you may have some “impressions” that influence your decisions about it. I have heard many statements from clients that are myths. Here are a few:

“The life insurance through my employer is the best and is enough coverage.” There are two problems with this statement. First, it may not be enough coverage. If your company offers one or two times your salary, then you’re only allowing your family one or two years before major changes need to be made. Second, you may be in better health and qualify for a better rate than what is currently being offered through your employer. “Life insurance is expensive.” Actually, one type of insurance called “Term” is relatively cheap and allows for a lot of coverage and a fixed premium for a certain amount of time. “There’s no way I’d qualify for life insurance.” There are certain companies that will be more lenient than others on specific health conditions. Even people who have had cancer in years past have been approved. In conclusion, each situation is unique and therefore needs careful scrutiny. If this is something you’d like to inquire about, feel free to contact me. I can assure you we don’t have a Ned Ryerson in our office, but I also believe it’s something that too few people look into until it’s too late. andy@pfgprivatewealth.com

We believe the word of God can and does change lives, however for our youth it needs to be delivered in a way that kids can understand it, so they can apply it to their everyday lives. To this end, we have developed the Kingdom Order, our version of an Order of Service but designed specifically for kids. It’s fun, energetic, dynamic, and best of all, easy to use. Our life lessons speak to the kids at their

level, making it easy for them to understand and apply. It’s been proven, and it works! Here are what some have said: “I have worked alongside this couple for the past 3 years. I have seen children blossom from ugly ducklings into beautiful swans while having fun and learning the life application these messages bring. Every single child in America and worldwide needs to be exposed to such a dynamic tool!” “We at BBS are honored to work with such an anointed team. This program is needed in every church, school, and/or learning center for kids.”

Encountering the Real Jesus: Unbelievable Keith Chandler, Journey Christian Church

When you look at the life of Jesus, many of the people that he encountered were in desperate situations. There is something about desperation that makes you open to God. It’s only when you’re desperate that you experience Gods deliverance. In Mark 4, Jesus has been with his disciples on the Sea of Galilee, and this terrible storm comes out of nowhere. Jesus is exhausted from his day’s work, and he’s asleep on a cushion on the boat during this storm. The disciples interpret this as Jesus not caring. “Jesus, don’t you care?” This is really the question we have for Jesus when we go through things like this. Jesus gets up and wipes the sleep out of his eyes and the wind and the waves calm down and the disciples ask, “Who is this?” That is the key question Mark wants to answer in his Gospel. Mark’s agenda in writing this gospel was establishing the identity of Jesus. Jesus has the authority to forgive sin. He has authority over religion and nature. The wind and the waves obey him. We’re going to see Jesus’ authority over demons, disease, and death (Read the three stories in Mark 5:1-42). All three of the people in this story were considered unclean (the man with the evil spirit, the woman bleeding, and the dead girl). And Jesus touches every one of them. NONE of them go unnoticed. In the midst of the crowds, Jesus makes sure that desperate people don’t go unnoticed. He stopped for them. He engaged them. Following Jesus means desperate people don’t go unnoticed. So, let me just speak some faith into you:

Just because the doctors can’t do it doesn’t mean that Jesus can’t do it. Just because you can’t fix it doesn’t mean that Jesus can’t fix it. Just because you can’t heal your marriage doesn’t mean that Jesus can’t heal your marriage. Just because you’ve not been able to overcome that addiction doesn’t mean that Jesus can’t overcome that addiction. Just because you haven’t been healed doesn’t mean that you won’t be healed. You begin to tell yourself of God’s faithfulness and speak that into your life. Here’s the bottom line: When your desperation overrides your pride, you are a candidate for God’s deliverance. Sometimes it’s just our pride that stands in the way. We don’t want to be noticed. And when your desperation overrides your pride, you become a candidate for God’s deliverance. Does God always show up the way we want? Of course not. I’ve stood before too many hospital beds and counseled too many to think that my desire is always God’s desire. But following Jesus means that desperate people don’t go unnoticed. People were desperate when Jesus walked the earth, and people are still desperate today. We are surrounded by desperate people. My prayer is that no one goes unnoticed. Until next month, Keith 7708 Van Dyke Rd, Odessa 813-920-0442 • Sun. 10:00

Garden Connect

By Steve and Jeanne Wolfe from White Dove Farm

Hi! At the last Garden Connect meeting in April we had Kathy Lavin giving a wonderful presentation on container gardening. Thrillers, Fillers and Spillers – This design technique utilizes three different types of plants to create well-rounded and upscale looking containers. Thrillers are plants with height, the Fillers should surround the Thriller variety, and the Spillers are trailing plants that hang over the edge of the planter.I like just about all varieties of growing plants, and I have learned to place certain plants (trial and error) in appropriate places. For example honeysuckle, which is a twining vine, attracts hummingbirds, so it’s good but also bad because it travels at a high rate of speed and chokes out the plants near it. So, where should you put honeysuckle? On a fence with no other plants nearby. The food afterwards was a feast, we had twenty-two people in attendance – it was really nice! We are going to share the benefits of assorted herbs in each article to keep for your records, the first one being the king of the herbs – Basil. We went to a wonderful lecture on basil with the Land O’ Lakes Garden Club at an Italian restaurant on US 41 north of State Road 52. Villa Verde Cafe’ & Ristorante Italiano, this restaurant is by RSVP only (813929-6800). They have a web site at http://villaverdecafe.com. This is a nice place to have your office parties, feasts, and club events. The many benefits of basil Basil comes in many varieties and sizes. Basil is well known for its use in Italian cuisine. It has many health benefits such as being an-

ti-inflammatory, an adaptogen (helps body respond to stress and fight disease) and is a powerful antibacterial agent. It can be eaten raw or cooked in many recipes. Jeanne’s dad, who is 100% Sicilian, always had basil plants by his back door, easy access for his gourmet food preparations. We want to share with you a classic Caponata recipe which is a delicious cold appetizer: • 5 tablespoons olive oil • 1 1 1/2-pound eggplant, unpeeled, cut into 1/2-inch cubes • 1 medium onion, cubed • 4 large garlic cloves, chopped • 1 14 1/2-ounce can or fresh diced tomatoes with Italian seasonings in juice • 3 tablespoons red wine vinegar • 2 tablespoons drained capers (rinse if too salty) • 1/3 cup chopped fresh basil • Toasted pine nuts (can be put in blender before adding) Preparation: Heat oil in heavy large skillet over medium heat. Add eggplant, onion, and garlic cloves. Sauté until eggplant is soft and brown, about 15 minutes. Add diced tomatoes with juice, then red wine vinegar and drained capers. Cover and simmer until eggplant and onion are very tender, stirring occasionally, about 12 minutes. Season caponata to taste with salt and pepper. Mix in fresh basil. Transfer caponata to serving bowl. Sprinkle with toasted pine nuts. Serve cold. Caponata can be made 2 days ahead. Cover and chill. Leave caponata in bowl and place on tray or large oval platter with hard-boiled eggs, other appetizers like different varieties of olives, and thin sliced Italian bread. A pretty miniature fork and spoon will serve your guests delightfully. Next Garden Connect meeting: Saturday, Jun 16, 2018 at 3:30pm. RSVP at (813) 991-9786, leave a message and we’ll call back. Speaker and subject to be announced. We have an access ramp for the disabled. We live in the Wesley Chapel area. “For God so loved you…” - John 3:16

Ten Years of Service, Ten Acts of Caring Griswold Home Care Tampa Marks its Anniversary With Plan to Pay It Forward The Tampa Office of Griswold Home Care is marking 10 years in business with a series of giving activities targeted at organizations serving seniors and the disabled. Most recently, the office awarded grants from the Jean Griswold Foundation to both the Tampa and Pasco Lighthouses for the Visually Impaired and Blind and Gulfside Hospice & Pasco Palliative Care. The project theme, “Ten Years of Service, Ten Acts of Caring” aligns with both Griswold Home Care’s mission to provide quality care for seniors and the disabled and its late founder Jean Griswold’s compassion and empathy that drove her to start the company in 1982. Arthur and Frieda Moseley, the owners and operators of the Tampa and Pasco franchises,

have also adopted the company’s slogan, “Delivered with Heart,” as the focus of their initiative through the end of 2018. “We really wanted to do something special to share the caring spirit exhibited by our staff and the caregivers we refer with the broader community,” said Frieda Moseley. “Between the charities we’ve already given to, and others like Alzheimer’s Association, Meals on Wheels, the Shriners, Feeding Tampa Bay and CurePSP (a not-for-profit that works to combat the neurodegenerative disease supranuclear palsy, a debilitating brain disorder with no treatment or cure) we hope to touch as many people as possible in as many ways as possible from all of the areas we serve.”

Opened in January 2008, the Tampa Office of Griswold Home Care expanded into Pasco County and now covers clients from Brandon to Hudson and from Thonotosassa to Westchase. To date, the office has served over 1,000 clients while the caregivers it refers have made over 150,000 visits and provided over a million hours of service. “In the months ahead, we will highlight one to two charities each month, raising money for them and boosting awareness of the services that they provide,” Frieda Moseley added. For more information on the Tampa Office of Griswold Home Care, visit www.GriswoldHomeCare.com/Tampa or call 813-343-0272 for more information.

As part of its “Ten Years of Service, Ten Acts of Giving” initiative, the Tampa Office of Griswold Home Care recently awarded a Jean Griswold Foundation grant to Pasco Lighthouse for the Visually Impaired and Blind. The grant will help low-income seniors and adults access Lighthouse services so they are able to age in place. Successful Retirement James H. Willis, III Founder and President The Willis Agency, Inc 813-948-9109 Jim@TheWillisAgency.com www.TheWillisAgency.com 1 Peter 5:7 There are Bulls and Bears—there are always people on both sides of the equation. Maybe, some are being positive and others negative we would say. Or, there are those that seem to always see the “silver lining” and those that see or feel the dark cloud coming. Who knows, perhaps they are both right? I would like to share some ideas or Big Picture concepts that should be helpful for you to make better decisions in your retirement planning. My personal convictions do mirror that of Ron Blue (material in our Kingdom Advisor Core Training). We begin that economic uncertainty is certain. Simply put, it means money, business, and investments are affected all the time, we just don’t know how, when, or where. Next, economic cycles are normal. Yes, we will have economic ups and downs and we should plan for both. The future cannot be predicted. We can show you the past, but there is no real certainty for the future. Now we need to understand that investments are a tool one uses to accomplish financial objectives. They are not an end in themselves. Many things may have “investment value” but they are not in reality an investment, like our “Fixed Index Annuities” guaranteed principal and lifetime income guaranteed.

Next, there are the three phases of money; Accumulation, Preservation, and Speculation. Note that one accumulates wealth by spending less than they earn over a long period of time. You may want to re-read that statement. The one who preserves wealth accomplishes this by following the Biblical principles of diversification. Also, investment speculation should only be done after asking a few questions; “What would God want me to do with extra money?” and/or “Can I afford to lose it?” Finally, having my Biblical principles influence my use of money has proven to be a wise decision. To get the specifics for your situation and needs, contact a professional. Give the Willis Agency a call. We have been helping people just like you since 1988. Caring for you and yours, Jim Here are some verses for reference: Proverbs 28:22: “He that hasteth to be rich hath an evil eye, and considereth not that poverty shall come upon him.” Proverbs 22:7: “The rich ruleth over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender.” Proverbs 6:6-8, 2 Peter 3:4b, Ecc. 11:1-2, Proverbs 9:20-21, Phil. 4:6-7

The History of Flag Day The Fourth of July was traditionally celebrated as America’s birthday, but the idea of an annual day specifically celebrating the Flag is believed to have first originated in 1885. BJ Cigrand, a schoolteacher, arranged for the pupils in the Fredonia, Wisconsin Public School, District 6, to observe June 14 (the 108th anniversary of the official adoption of The Stars and Stripes) as ‘Flag Birthday’. In numerous magazines and newspaper articles and public addresses over the following years, Cigrand continued to enthusiastically advocate the observance of June 14 as ‘Flag Birthday’, or ‘Flag Day’. Following the suggestion of Colonel J Granville Leach (at the time historian of the Pennsylvania Society of the Sons of the Revolution), the Pennsylvania Society of Colonial Dames of America on April 25, 1893 adopted a resolution requesting the mayor of Philadelphia and all others in authority and all private citizens to display the Flag on June 14th. Leach went on to recommend that thereafter the day be known as ‘Flag Day’, and on that day, school children be assembled for appropriate exercises, with each child being given a small Flag. In 1894, the governor of New York directed that on June 14 the Flag be displayed on all public buildings. With BJ Cigrand and Leroy Van Horn as the moving spirits, the Illinois organization, known as the American Flag Day Association, was organized for the purpose of promoting the holding of Flag Day exercises. On June 14th, 1894, under the auspices of this association, the first general public school

children’s celebration of Flag Day in Chicago was held in Douglas, Garfield, Humboldt, Lincoln, and Washington Parks, with more than 300,000 children participating. Inspired by these three decades of state and local celebrations, Flag Day - the anniversary of the Flag Resolution of 1777 - was officially established by the Proclamation of President Woodrow Wilson on May 30th, 1916. While Flag Day was celebrated in various

How to Observe Flag Day The week of June 14 is designated as “National Flag Week.” During National Flag Week, the president will issue a proclamation urging U.S. citizens to fly the American flag for the duration of that week. The flag should also be displayed on all Government buildings. Some organizations hold parades and events in celebration of our national flag and everything it represents. It’s also a time to remember and honor military men and women who defend our flag and our country.

communities for years after Wilson’s proclamation, it was not until August 3rd, 1949, that President Truman signed an Act of Congress designating June 14th of each year as National Flag Day. http://www.usflag.org/history/flagday.html.

Patrick Henry used the phrase in his last public speech, given in March 1799, in which he denounced The Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions. Clasping his hands and swaying unsteadily, Henry declaimed, “Let us trust God, and our better judgment to set us right hereafter. United we stand, divided we fall. Let us not split into factions which must destroy that union upon which our existence hangs.” At the end of his oration, Henry fell into the arms of bystanders and was carried almost lifeless into a nearby tavern. Two months afterward, he had died. The phrase also appears in the New Testament, albeit in slightly different language. Mark 3:25, “A house divided against itself cannot stand”

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_we_ stand,_divided_we_fall Mark 3:23-29 Jesus spoke to the crowd in parables: ‘How can Satan drive out Satan? If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. If Satan opposes himself and is divided, he cannot stand; his end has come. In fact, no one can enter a strong man’s houee and carry off his possessions unless he first ties up the strong man. Then he can rob his house. I tell you the truth, all the sins and blasphemies of men will be forgiven them. But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; he is guilty of an eternal sin.’”

Executive Barber Studio By Karen McBride

Jose Suarez opened Executive Barber Studio in the Carrollwood area in March of this year. He chose the location because it was a familyoriented neighborhood, easily accessible, and not too congested. Jose has over 20 years’ experience, opening his first shop in New Jersey, before expanding to the Tampa Bay area. “I wanted a place where people would feel comfortable coming in whether it was moms with their kids or guys getting a haircut after work. They can relax and watch a little TV while they get cleaned up,” said Jose. For the month of June, the family-friendly barbershop will offer quality adult haircuts starting at $14. Discounts are offered to military personnel/law enforcement (with ID), seniors and children. The barbers have been trained in cutting edge techniques to create styles for all of the

new trends, including fades, but the barbers maintain a master of classic looks as well. Their patience and skillset produces quality haircuts for even their youngest of clients. Additional services include hot towel shaves, straight razor shaves, shampoo, and hot steam towel facials. Executive Barber Studio is open Monday through Friday, 9am – 7pm and Saturday 9am – 5pm. In order to better accommodate their clients, appointments can be scheduled for Sunday. Executive Barber Studio is located at 4530 West Village Drive, Tampa, FL 33624. Call for an appointment at 813-374-8438. Walkins are welcome. For more information go to https://www.executivestudio.com or find them on Facebook at https://www.facebook. com/ExecutiveBarberTampa.

The Great Florida Outdoors: Oscar Scherer State Park Dr. Robert Norman, Clinical Professor, Dermatology Nova Southeastern University

When my friend Ed said he and his wife Jan were camping at Oscar Scherer State Park, I knew I had to get down there from Tampa and visit. After fighting through a rubber-necking infused, nasty traffic jam that doubled my travel time, I was anxious to get into the park. Oscar Scherer State Park is a 1400-acre wilderness tucked into the urban sprawl of Tamiami Trail in Sarasota County, and I consider it an amazing respite from the drone of traffic and everyday stress. The park serves as a revitalizing and fresh recharge in a packed and growing area. Within 15 minutes of arriving, I was in the water of South Creek on my favorite kayak, my drinks and cameras secure and my mind ready to take it all in. Within the first 100 yards, a beautiful black-crowned night heron appeared on an overhanging branch, and I warmed up my camera by snapping a bunch of pictures. I met Ed around a bend of the creek and we compared notes on what we had seen. Over the next couple of hours, I captured a number of wonderful species on my camera, including a green heron (see photo) and numerous other creek-dwellers. After paddling, I unpacked my water home and put my kayak back up on my vehicle. Ed and I found a couple great trails to traverse and began hiking. I know over the course of the time Ed was camping that he would probably cover almost every one of the 15 miles of trails on the property. Along the way he would

see the threatened scrub jay, and even had one land on his hat! (see photo) We hiked on two main trails restricted to hikers—the Lester Finley Trail and the South Creek Nature. Although we are also avid offroad bikers, it was refreshing to have the trail to ourselves. The Finley trail is barrier-free and is a wonderful path for those with disabilities. As you traverse a hardwood hammock along South Creek, you end up at a wonderful garden of native species that you can explore before you turn back. The whole journey is only a half-mile long, perhaps 20-30 minutes in total round trip. The trail has a wheelchair accessible fishing dock, butterfly observation area, and drinking fountain. If you add on the half-mile long South Creek Nature Trail, you can go inside and explore the Nature Center before or after your journey. Oscar Scherer State Park is a geologist’s dream. The recently emerged substrate consists of marine sediments overlying a limestone base. The upper limestone formation exposed along the banks of South Creek is the Charlton, a division of the Choctawhatchee Stage, in the Miocene Series, approximately 5 to 23 million years ago. In 1989, when the Florida Geological Survey drilled to a depth of 145 feet and extracted a stratigraphic column, precise geological data for the park became available. Before the establishment of the park, marl was mined here for highway construction. Marl or marlstone is a calcium carbonate or limerich mud or mudstone which contains variable amounts of clays and silt from marine deposits and lake sediments. Marl was used as a soil conditioner and fertilizer for soils deficient in lime. The excavation pit, known as Lake Osprey, is currently used for recreation, including swimming and fishing. Another borrow pit located along the park’s southwestern boundary was created during the construction of State Road 681 and is used for fishing and bird watching.

The park lies in the South Creek drainage basin, one of the numerous small creeks that drain the flat land along this portion of the Gulf Coast. South Creek flows into the park from the north in a southeasterly direction, then turns southwesterly to flow under a bridge along the railto-trail corridor (The Legacy Trail) and out to Blackburn Bay. The Legacy Trail is suitable for walking, biking, jogging, or rollerblading and runs from Venice, Florida to Sarasota, Florida, passing through Oscar Scherer State Park. You can ride your bicycle on the paved 11-mile portion of the Legacy Trail, which cuts through the park atop an old railroad bed. The land bordering South Creek supports a more xeric scrubby flatwoods community where Florida scrub jays are found. The creek was canalized upstream from the railroad bridge in the 1950s and the spoil placed along either side of the channel. Downstream of the bridge the creek is tidally- influenced and the channel widens and becomes shallow. In addition to hiking and kayaking, activities abound here in the park. You may spot bald eagles, ospreys, warblers, woodpeckers, egrets, and the great blue and little blue heron in addition to the scrub jay. Lucky visitors might see bobcats, rabbits, foxes, North American river otters, American alligators, eastern indigo snakes, and gopher tortoises and gopher frogs. If you like to camp, this is the place—half of Oscar Scherer’s 98 sites (Nos. 1 through 20 and 68 through 98) are on the banks of South Creek. Picnic areas are equipped with grills, and pavilions can be reserved for a fee. How did the park get started? Elsa Scherer Burrows, owner of the 462-acre South Creek Ranch, died in 1955, leaving the ranch in her will to the state to form a park dedicated to the memory of her father, Oscar Scherer, the developer of a shoe leather dyeing process in 1872. In 1956 the park was opened to visitors. Thirty years later, realtor and environmentalist Jon

Thaxton began work to protect the neighboring Florida scrub jay territory. In 1992 the result was 922 acres being added from the adjacent Palmer Ranch that had been among the holdings of Bertha Honoré Palmer, in large part due to the Nature Conservancy, public support, and the use of Preservation 2000 funds, expanding the park’s size to 1,384 acres. In September 2008, in recognition of National Public Lands Day, Lee Wetherington, a local developer and long-time park supporter, donated an additional 16.6 acres of land to the park, including the buffer property adjacent to the Willowbend subdivision (a Wetherington development). Enjoy the park while you can. Construction seems to encroach on every corner of our great state, pushing the native species into more restricted habitats. I often point out that the most populous birds in the state are the cranes, and by that I mean the towering cranes that fill the landscapes around every new building project. Oscar Scherer State Park 1843 S. Tamiami Trail Osprey, FL 34229 Phone: (941) 483-5956 Get out and enjoy the Great Florida Outdoors! Origins of Father’s Day and the Fairmont Disaster

The campaign to celebrate the nation’s fathers did not meet with the same enthusiasm--perhaps because, as one florist explained, “fathers haven’t the same sentimental appeal that mothers have.” On July 5, 1908, a West Virginia church sponsored the nation’s first event explicitly in honor of fathers, a Sunday sermon in memory of the 362 men who had died in the previous December’s explosions at the Fairmont Coal Company mines in Monongah, but it was a one-time commemoration and not an annual holiday. The next year, a Spokane, Washington woman named Sonora Smart Dodd, one of six children raised by a widower, tried to establish an official equivalent to Mother’s Day for male parents. She went to local churches, the YMCA, shopkeepers and government officials to drum up support for her idea, and she was successful: Washington State celebrated the nation’s first statewide Father’s Day on July 19, 1910. Slowly, the holiday spread. In 1916, President Wilson honored the day by using telegraph signals to unfurl a flag in Spokane when he pressed a button in Washington, D.C. In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge urged state governments to observe Father’s Day. However, many men continued to disdain the day. As one historian writes, they “scoffed at the holiday’s sentimental attempts to domesticate manliness with flowers and gift-giving, or they derided the proliferation of such holidays

as a commercial gimmick to sell more products--often paid for by the father himself.” During the 1920s and 1930s, a movement arose to scrap Mother’s Day and Father’s Day altogether in favor of a single holiday, Parents’ Day. Every year on Mother’s Day, pro-Parents’ Day groups rallied in New York City’s Central Park--a public reminder, said Parents’ Day activist and radio performer Robert Spere, “that both parents should be loved and respected together.” Paradoxically, however, the Depression derailed this effort to combine and de-commercialize the holidays. Struggling retailers and advertisers redoubled their efforts to make Father’s Day a “second Christmas” for men, promoting goods such as neckties, hats, socks, pipes and tobacco, golf clubs and other sporting goods, and greeting cards. When World War II began, advertisers began to argue that celebrating Father’s Day was a way to honor American troops and support the war effort. By the end of the war, Father’s Day may not have been a federal holiday, but it was a national institution. In 1972, in the middle of a hard-fought presidential re-election campaign, Richard Nixon signed a proclamation making Father’s Day a federal holiday at last. Today, economists estimate that Americans spend more than $1 billion each year on Father’s Day gifts. http://www.history.com/topics/fathers-day http://patheoldminer.rootsweb.ancestry. com/darr2.html

God’s Plan for America’s Comeback Continued from Page 1

But until we do our part, God will not do His part. The key word in this entire verse is “then.” It makes it clear that our part must be fulfilled before God’s part can be initiated. Our part involves true humility and repentance. We can pray for restoration. However, restoration can’t come until there is revival. Revival can’t come until there is responsibility, responsibility can’t come until there is repentance, and repentance can’t come until we remember. We must remember who we are, where we come from, and why it’s important to be accountable for what God’s given us through our Founding Fathers. We must discover things like: • How was our government formed? • What price was paid for our liberty, and who paid it? • What role did God play in the lives of our Founding Fathers? • What responsibilities did our Founders give us? The Bible says wisdom comes from two sources: the Word of God and life’s experiences (history). If we choose to forget the past, then we lose the wisdom of the past—wisdom that came at a great price. If we forget, then history will inevitably repeat itself, and we’ll once again pay a tremendous price. God wants to use our nation as a beacon of light to shine brightly for Jesus Christ all around the world.

Revival or Rescue? On May 7, millions in America observed the 64th Annual National Day of Prayer. It’s an incredible opportunity to come together and focus our eyes on the true Source of our help. However, as we pray, we have to be willing to do what God shows us. I believe a lot of people simply want God to rescue this nation—to solve our problems without requiring any action on our part. However, revival for America includes taking responsibility to do what God shows us to help preserve what our forefathers obtained. In 1787, as Benjamin Franklin exited the Constitutional Convention, a woman shouted from the crowd, “Sir, what have you given us?” Franklin famously responded, “A republic, ma’am, if you can keep it.” What did he mean? A republic means “rule of law” (our Constitution). This form of government offers the very greatest liberties and freedom—but it also requires the most responsibility, moral virtue, and maintenance to keep it intact. America has gone from a strong, godly nation, ready to fight for our liberties and moral princicples to one that’s complacent, allowing ungodliness to creep in little by little. Evil doesn’t just happen overnight, it happens slowly over time as we fail to fulfill our responsibilities. Not doing what needs to be done in the face of evil encourages its existence and growth. Evil is only denied exis-

tence by wise action, and wise action is our responsibility! As Christians, the choice is up to us. We can either stand up and fight or lay down entirely. But we can’t stay the same and expect the direction of our country to change. Worth Fighting For God is waiting for the body of Christ in America to become a courageous body—a group who will stand up and do what He is asking us to do. This is the true meaning of a “patriot.” It involves becoming educated about our past, then taking action for our future. The Lord wants to use our nation, our resources, and our people to once again become a beacon of light to shine brightly for Jesus Christ all around the world. On May 26, Memorial Day, we celebrated those who have allowed our light to shine in years past, an honor all of the servicemen

and women who fought for this nation and made the ultimate sacrifice. Today, we continue the fight. However, it’s a battle against misinformation, passivity, and what I refer to as “historical amnesia.” These battles are just as important as any we’ve ever fought. Our generation has the responsibility to protect the precious liberties that brave men and women have sacrificed to protect. Friends, with your help, we can protect them—God has given us the plan. One by one, we can do our part to take a stand for America. As we are faithful to do what we can do, the Lord will be faithful to do what we can’t, and bring healing to our land. joycemeyer.org • (800) 727-9673 The Future of America - Dave Meyer h t t p s : / / w w w. y o u t u b e . c o m / watch?v=fWOiGY-lkbo

“I was so happy to win two tickets to the Big Cat Rescue. On May 6th, 2018 I was able to visit the sanctuary with my 13 year old granddaughter Julia and we enjoyed every minute. It was very interesting to hear the stories of what happened to the cats and how they were rescued. It is nice to know that there are people who care about helping and taking care of these beautiful and fantastic animals. Thank you!” — Ruth F.

Why Should I Use a Travel Agent?

Guardian ad Litem Foundation of Tampa Bay, in collaboration with Galleries on the Go (GOTG) and Safety Harbor-based CPA Franklin Clark Inc., are putting together a curated art show to support the Guardian ad Litem Foundation of Tampa Bay. All funds raised by this unique art show will go towards Guardian ad Litem Foundation of Tampa Bay Children’s Needs Program. Executive Director Amy Foster states, “Our Children’s Needs Program allows Guardians ad Litem to submit requests to provide for the real needs of abused and neglected children, whether that is emergency clothing, tutoring or a new bike.” In the words of one Guardian ad Litem who requested funds through the GALF Children’s Needs Request Program, “I was able to get a home tutor for a first grade child who was failing terribly in school. Within 6 months she turned around completely and was in the top percentile of her class.”

“Why should I use a travel agent?” As a travel professional, that’s a question I’m often asked. Today, with the overwhelming number of sources for travel information, it’s no wonder the consumer is confused. The Internet has turned into a minefield of SEO and paid-for listings, not to mention all the new tools and apps available which have essentially put the traveler in a bubble of recommendations. In many ways, increased access to travel information online has made the human expert more important than ever. USA Today reported that travel agents are more than just agents, they are advocates for the traveler. Travel agents stand up for travelers at a time when travelers need a voice now more than ever. We’re not just ticket bookers; we’re versatile travel experts who have your back. And we add value to our clients by managing their most valuable asset, their time. The best thing an agent can do is to match up a traveler with the vacation that’s right for them. We have access and resources and connections that would take the average traveler a lifetime to build. But our most important relationship is with our clients, the traveler. The use of outside service providers for many transactions, such as tax preparation, isn’t questioned. Similarly, if one is going to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars, as well as a good chunk of valuable leisure time, it makes great sense to use a professional. Sincerely, Ed Scott • Dream Vacations ERS & Associates • www.erstravelassociates.com

ARBORIST

June 2018

PALM TRIMMING

By Karen McBride

Florida landscaping has taken a beating this past winter. The ever-changing temperatures may have left your trees and landscaping looking dried and haggard. AllPro Tree and Landscaping can help you to restore the beauty of the nature surrounding your home. Pete Spiridis, owner of AllPro Tree and Landscaping, is a certified arborist and his expertise can transform your garden from forlorn to fabulous! Services provided include trimming, removals, stump grinding, and clean ups. If you have been contemplating a new look for your lawn, computer generated designs can provide you with different options so that you can actually see what the new landscape design will look like. The professional designers go beyond the basics of landscape design while making every effort to stay within clients’ budget limits. Hurricane season starts June 1, so be sure your yard is free from debris. Tree branches and other debris can become missiles and cause further damage to your home when a hurricane hits. For more information, go to https://www.myallpro.com or call 813-244-9234 or 727-409-3315 for an estimate.

Coast to Coast Maids By Karen McBride

Nora Rusch began Coast to Coast Maids to help people make their lives better, healthier, and cleaner. She finds pleasure in making homes sparkle, and bringing joy to her clients. She always knew she wanted to clean homes. Even as a young girl, she enjoyed cleaning the cafeteria at her school. “I was born to clean. I knew at a very young age that this is what I wanted to do. When the nuns at my school asked if I would like to help clean, I couldn’t have been happier!” said Rusch. The cleaning company services both residential and commercial spaces in Carrollwood, Lutz, Land O’ Lakes, New Tampa, Odessa, Tampa, Temple Terrace, South Tampa, Town N’ Country, and Westchase. Clients can choose from daily, weekly, bi-weekly, monthly or even call in services. No home is too big or too small. In addition to making your home spotless, the professional employees can assist with your organizational needs, provide move in/out cleaning, help set up, serve, and take down parties, and more. “I’ve been using Coast to Coast Maids for 15 years now, and they have been so reliable, so open to instruction, making sure that everything is done the way I want it, and it’s such a relief to come home after a busy day of working and shopping and run-

ning errands to walk into a clean house and just smell the cleanness in the air and the weight is just off your shoulders that you can actually sit down and relax for a minute. I’m really happy with their service, and I think you will be too!” – Mary Kelly The friendly, dependable employees are prescreened and professionally trained. Periodic background checks are performed to maintain the high level of employee standards. They do not use independent sub-contractors or vendors. Rusch believes in the hands-on approach. She’s in the field every day, working alongside her employees. Need help preparing for a party or cleaning up afterwards? Memorial Day through Labor Day Special! 3 hours for $75 ($90 value). 4 hours for $100 ($120 value). For more information or to schedule an appointment, call (813) 388-3889 or visit their website at http://www.coasttocoastmaids.com.

Just Palms – For All of Your Gardening Needs By Karen McBride Just Palms, a veteran-owned company, not only specializes in the care of palm trees, small trees, and hedges, but can assist you with all of your gardening needs. The volatile winter months have taken their toll on your beautiful garden and lawn, and now it is time to clear away the remnants. Pruning is key to protecting your investment in your garden as it allows for new growth. Chris Tillman has been serving customers in the Tampa Bay area since 2005. In addition to pruning trees, the well-trained and courteous crew will clean up leaves and branches discarded after numerous cold fronts plummeted the area, and mulch garden beds to retain moisture to reduce watering needs during dry spells. “We fill the gap from what the lawn guy won’t trim and jobs that are too small for most tree companies”, said Tillman.
