The Story Behind That Anti-Trump Billboard

by Lynn Trimble, an award-winning freelance writer/photographer specializing in art and culture including performing arts. Donald Trump’s image looms large over the Grand Avenue arts district these days. That’s because Beatrice Moore, a Phoenix artist and historic preservation advocate, owns a billboard that now displays a giant anti-Trump image, complete with dollar signs made to look like swastikas. Moore owns several Grand Avenue properties, and has been instrumental in building the local arts scene. The 40-foot-wide billboard is located on Grand Avenue, between 10th and 11th avenues. Moore owns the property below it, which is home to the 11th Monkey clothing design shop owned by Ru-

ben Gonzales. She invited Los Angeles artist Karen Fiorito to create the billboard after Trump’s election, and had it installed early Friday morning, March 17. The billboard features Trump’s face flanked by not only the swastika-like symbols, but also nuclear mushroom clouds that incorporate clown imagery. The swastika/dollar sign hybrids originated with New York artist Hugh Gran, who granted Fiorito permission to use them. On Trump’s label, there’s a small Russian flag pin.

I Am Finally Fed Up!

Samantha Taylor Samantha Taylor Fitness One of the things I have learned after being in the health and fitness industry for 25 years is that people have different thresholds when enough is enough and they are fed up. Some women can be 50 lbs. overweight and honestly not even really notice it until a series of events happens in her life. Usually it’s a culmination of things happening that pile up on one another like her clothes not fitting anymore and she refuses to buy a larger size. Or she has stepped on the scale and she is now the heaviest she has ever been or she saw a picture of herself and didn’t even recognize herself. Or the worst, someone asked her, “When is the baby due?” when she is not pregnant (many women have told me this happened to them)! Or she has noticed the intimacy in her marriage has been affected because of how she feels about herself or that her self-esteem has plummeted so much that she has become a hermit and doesn’t want to leave the house anymore in fear of people seeing how much weight she has gained. These are the stories I hear every day from women and there is that moment where she is totally fed up with her current circumstances and she realizes she MUST do something about it. She says, “I can’t take this another second! I know I need help but know I can’t do this on my own.” It’s in that moment of frustration that can actually be her greatest step towards victory because she is fed up! But what does she do? Another diet pro-

gram that puts her on pills and has her on 500 calories a day so that she may lose the weight but when she goes off the meds she may gain it back because her hunger is no longer controlled by the drugs? Or an extreme diet of nothing but protein shakes all day? Those are all methods to lose weight, but after training over 6,000 women in my four studios, I want to focus on solving this problem: how are you going to keep the weight off? Not just lose it. The only way is to learn how to eat healthier. I know that was not the quick fix some are looking for. However, it is the answer to lasting success. I have found that a woman has to get to a place where she is so fed up with the negative consequences in her life from the extra weight or lack of health that she is compelled to do something. The question is, is she going to let it get worse before she does something about it? You might find yourself being that woman and being fed up with your current situation can be a good place to be because that is when you are most likely to do something about it. I heard a saying, “You will never change what you tolerate.” That is SO true because if you put up with it, then it will stay the same. Anna Allen, owner of BodyMindSpirit Connected, is spreading God’s word and sharing her gift of healing by hosting retreats for girls ages 11-17 whom are currently living in foster care. The retreats give the girls a time to relax, be pampered, and to laugh with their friends. The purpose is to bring healing to their body, mind, and spirit. Anna first came up with the idea for the program a few years ago when a representative of Miracles Outreach spoke at a Chamber meeting about the foster care program. At a separate event, a member of Thrivent Financial, a Christian financial group, was encouraging businesses to give back to the community. Anna knew she wanted to help others, and it was through these two organizations that the idea for the retreats began. The first one was held in October, 2016. The next event will be held September

8 and another on October 6. Donations of food for the evening of the retreat are needed, as well as items for the girls. Contributions could include toothbrushes, shampoo, conditioner, soap, and other toiletries. Gift cards to the movies, bowling, and other activities would be greatly appreciated. Volunteers are needed for the events. One volunteer, a laughter yoga instructor, travels all the way from Orlando to share her gift with the girls. Big Brothers Big Sisters Launches 100 Men in 100 Days Campaign The organization is focused on recruiting more men to serve as volunteer mentors to local boys.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay is launching its annual campaign to enroll more male mentors, called 100 Men in 100 Days. The need has never been greater, as there are hundreds of Tampa Bay children on the organization’s waiting list, and the vast majority of them are boys seeking a positive male role model in their lives. These are boys who, with the approval of their parent or legal guardian, have raised their hand and asked for help from Big Brothers Big Sisters. The campaign kicks off on Friday, August 18 and runs through November 25. Last year, more than 150 men completed their Big Brothers Big Sisters orientation and training during the 100 Men in 100 Days campaign, and the organization is hoping to exceed that number in 2017. Big Brothers Big Sisters is the oldest and largest youth mentoring organization in the nation and has been operating in the Tampa Bay area for more than 50 years. The agency matches caring adult mentors (called Bigs) to

boys and girls (called Littles) who are facing any number of challenges including living in poverty, coming from a single-parent home, or living with a relative or having a parent who is incarcerated. The program boasts an impressive success rate, with 98 percent of the children matched for more than a year in 2016 advancing to the next school grade, and 98 percent having no involvement with the juvenile justice system. Relationships: It’s Complicated Keith Chandler, Journey Christian Church

If there’s one area we need to allow God to transform us from the inside; it’s in the way we deal with conflict with those who are wired so differently than us. I want to make this as practical as I can with some wisdom about dealing with conflict with people who are different from you. Because God’s way is so much wiser, let me just give you 4 things. 1. I will act, not react. We have different ways of reacting. Some of us explode. We lose our temper, let it fly, and raise our voice. Others react with the silent treatment. Psalm 141:3 says, “Set a guard over my mouth, LORD; keep watch over the door of my lips.” If your lips are like a door, that means there’s a hinge. You can open it and you can shut it. And the way we have to start when that conflict arises is by going to God first. God, put a guard over my mouth. God, watch over the door of my lips. I will act, not react. 2. I will focus on the good things in you. You say, “I don’t see anything good in that person right now.” Here’s what I want to say to you (and I mean it sincerely): that is a lie, straight out of Hell itself. The Bible says Satan is the fa-

ther of all lies. I think there’s spiritual warfare sometimes going on in our relationships. The evil one gets us thinking things about this other person that are just not true. The Apostle Paul has this wisdom in Philippians 4:8: “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” Focus on those things in the other person before you blow this whole thing out of proportion. 3. I will apply God’s grace to you. “I want God’s grace for me. But God, make that person pay!” It’s amazing how much grace we’re willing to receive and how little grace we are willing to extend. 4. I will remember God’s grace to me. That will change you. Every time I remember all God has done for me, I know I have the capacity to do it for others. The Return of the Cosmic King! If you have been following the current events through your local news and YouTube social media, you may have come across some interesting events taking place. Some groups call out “the sky is falling” and calling it a doomsday event—you know those guys—while others are heading out to witness these world events, but myself, I think of these events as the world turns, God is in control. On 6/17/17, a bizarre accident on the U.S.S. Fitzgerald occurred, and on 7/13/17 a massive iceberg the size of Delaware broke away from Antarctica! On 8/21/17, a total solar eclipse happened, and on 9/23/17 the constellation of Virgo-Leo is predicted. Matthew 24:4-8: “Jesus answered: ‘Watch out that no one deceives you. For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and will deceive many. You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nations and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of birth pains.’” We don’t know with 100% certainty what will happen September 23rd, 2017 when the Revelation 12 sign occurs and planets Venus, Mars, and Mercury show up to meet with the constellations Virgo and Leo. This is a major prophecy that has never happened before, so truly we can say we have a major event unfolding in our hands. As people divide themselves into different groups, there are those who absolutely oppose any rapture theory of any kind whatsoever, saying no need to watch for the coming of the Lord, let time proceed and let things fall into place as they wait for the rapture to occur accordingly with other failed doomsday theories. Another group will fall for the theory hook, line, and sinker like Noah, when God asked him to build an ark to specific measurements

and specification despite others who laughed and mocked him about climate change. But Noah stayed on the job and did everything God ask of him. Just as Jesus told his disciples go out in the world and teach about the good news of the Lord and celebrate a great revival of the day of Jubilee. Another group will do as Jonah did. God told him to go to the city of Ninevites. Jonah said, “But the people in Nineveh are bad. They are lazy, they steal, they are not kind to each other, and they have a king pretending not to see any problems. But most of all, they are the

selves!” And they did. Suddenly the sea become calm and a whale came along and swallowed up Jonah and delivered him safely to Nineveh. Nevertheless, this group is doing exactly that, keeping quiet, hunkering down quietly and hiding from God as they wait for the rapture to occur along with other failed doomsday theories. As Nibiru, planet X, or as in Rev 8:11, Wormwood— passes through our solar system, is maybe where the seven years of tribulation comes into play. Just Google Wal-Mart underground and you get a better idea.

Yes, it sure is getting hot as these occurrences in Heaven unfold. God is on the move for the celebration of Jubilee! In the beginning, Jesus went into the synagogue on the Sabbath Day and stood up to read the book of the prophet Isaiah and began his public ministry with a quote about the Jubilee. “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, for this reason He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal those who are brokenhearted, to proclaim pardon to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to send forth in deliverance those who have been crushed, and to proclaim the year of the Lord.”

The Bible describes a period of time of rejoicing, trumpets will sound, all debts would be canceled, and all slaves will be released from captivity. Servants would be free to go back to their homes and all property and land would be returned to its original owner. A celebration known as the Day of Atonement, for God owns everything, and He has set up a special regularly occurring period of time where man’s possessions will be returned to him, called the Jubilee. This occurs after seven sets of seven yearly intervals equaling 49 + 1 year = 50 total years are finished. Revelation 22:12: “Look, I am coming soon, bringing my reward with me to repay all people according to their deeds.” In Genesis, when God created man He gave dominion over the earth, then Satan the serpent came and man sinned, giving up his ownership or lordship of the earth to Satan. Though this may sound like a fairy tale, Satan now holds lordship over what is going on now until Jesus returns on his white horse and reclaims the lordship of earth or a Jubilee. In the Six Day War in 1967, Arab armies had coordinated a military invasion of Egypt, Jordan, and Syria backed by the superpower of Russia to prevent the creation of the small Jewish country of Israel and its independence from being born. Israel’s War of independence succeeded in repelling the forces of reclaimed sovereignty over statelessness and persecution of the ancient Jewish homeland. 1967+50= the year 2017. Matthew 24:44 (AMP): “So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.” Read Revelation 12 for the sign of Sept, 23. It may reveal astronomical evidence for the Rapture. Ha, they are our favorite anyways, right? Look, somebody must teach our children the responsibility of money. It’s powerful, and dangerous as the same time. The schools don’t teach this, the colleges don’t teach this, neither do businesses or churches. Sadly, most families do not prepare their children for the “Huge Financial World” that impacts our daily lives, and I don’t understand why. Personally, I was completely unprepared, and it was not until much later in life did I under the concept of money and sound financial planning. Today, I would like to share with you 4 very important Financial Trends affecting our youth. Trend #1—Financial Illiteracy. This is the norm among young Americans. A survey conducted by VISA found that 49% of the youth think it is more likely they will become a millionaire by starring on a reality TV show than learning how to save and budget wisely. Also, a consumer report survey found that 28% of students didn’t know that credit cards are a form of borrowing and 40% didn’t know the bank charges a percentage rate. Trend #2—Kids and Teens have money

and spending influence, and the advertisers and credit card companies come after them. A market research report found that in 2013, teens spent $250 billion, an average of $153 weekly. And younger kids directly influenced spending on their behalf to a tune of $174 billion. Trend #3—Each group apparently presumes someone else is teaching their kids about money and finances. 80% of parents believe that schools provide classes on money management and budgeting. NOPE!!!!! Look, once again, it is up to us, the PARENTS!!! Trend #4—Whether parents like it or not or realize it or not, kids look to them for financial guidance. Listen to this Capital One survey, more than 70% of parents say they have “spoken” with their teen about credit and using a credit card wisely, while less than 44% of the teenagers of those parents say that their parent has talked to them about money or credit cards. Look, it is obvious we are not doing a good job at this because most parents are not doing a good job of this themselves. This hearing is the spiritual hearing that comes as an illumination by the Holy Spirit as you meditate on God’s word and His promises. Only when you have the confidence of faith produced by God’s word can you have this peace. Many people had their faith for their health in the modern medical system and their insurance. Both are now in jeopardy, and they should look now to our best source for healing. I really want believers to experience the full measure of God’s freedom from fear, and to know His gracious peace that passes all understanding. We teach and train ministers of the gospel here at Life Christian University. We want them to know these truths and be able to effectively communicate them to others as part of their ministry. When I was first pursuing my ministry education at Rhema Bible Training College, I was able to attend healing services that Dr. Kenneth Hagin conducted every afternoon. It was not part of our morning curriculum, but students could attend and join in helps ministry, and observe as Dr. Hagin demonstrated the things that he was teaching in his classes. I spent two years at Healing School while attending Rhema and I learned as much about the flow of the ministry of the Holy Spirit in those services as from all of my classes. This past year I began conducting healing services like the ones I was part of with Dr. Hagin. We conduct them on Thursday nights at 7:00 here at the main campus and have experienced marvelous results. We want to invite everyone in Tampa Bay area to attend in person. Malachi 4:1-2a For almost a year, I lived just outside the town of Pine Bluff, Arkansas. The house where I lived was right in the middle of a large field where a variety of crops were grown: things such as hay, cotton, and rice, just to name a few. At the end of the growing season for each crop, shortly after the hay had been cut or the crops had been harvested would come a day when the farmers would perform what is called a controlled, or prescribed, burn. This wasn’t a raging inferno, but it did get rid of any crops that were left behind, or weeds and debris that had grown among the crops during the season. For days afterward all you could smell when you left the house was the acrid, terrible smell of ash from the burned plants.

I imagine this experience is one that many people in our denomination, and probably many of the people in Malachi’s audience, knew well. We all know how destructive fire can be. Even if we haven’t faced it ourselves, we know of a friend or family member whose home has been burned by a fire. So when Malachi says that evildoers will be burned up and that neither root nor branch will be left, we know that means the destruction will be complete, and it will be terrible. But we also know that the fire will be temporary. Those controlled burns are done to cleanse the fields of weeds, kill bad seeds, and prepare the ground for new growth. As terrible as the destruction of fire can be, it is vital to encouraging healthy growth in the future. The fires we face in our own lives can be seem to be devastating to us while they occur. They can be painful for some time after they occur. But we never face them alone. The fires are only temporary. We have to use those fires, those difficult times, to strengthen our faith. We need to use the lessons we learn so that our faith comes back more vibrant and healthy than we ever were before. Submitted by Rev. That Anti-Trump Billboard Continued from Page 1

Before Fiorito’s art was installed, the billboard featured a pro-recycling message. Now the billboard is stirring significant controversy, including death threats against the artist. Moore says she isn’t granting interviews, but Gonzales doesn’t mind speaking out. “The art is definitely setting off emotions in people, and we’ve had a decent amount of hate calls and emails,” he says. On Sunday, March 19, a pair of protesters spent several hours in front of the store, holding pro-Trump signs with visible guns in tow. But Gonzales says he’s also heard plenty of support from area business owners and people coming in to shop because they heard about the billboard. Fiorito originally said that she donated her artwork for the billboard, but has since told New Times that she received a stipend for the project, which also includes a 24-foot image on the back of the main billboard. (“I was really trying to protect Beatrice,” Fiorito says in an email, regarding her original statement about not being paid. “I wanted to take full responsibility in case of violence.” For the opposite side of the billboard, Fiorito went with a series of five hands spelling out the word “unity” in sign language. “The plan is to have them up for one to four years,” she says. “If things get crazier, we might have to update them.”

Moore agreed to let Fiorito use the billboard free of charge. And Fiorito ran with it. Back then, George W. Bush was in the White House, and Fiorito wasn’t a fan. So, she created a billboard assailing Bush’s Iraq war policies. For another billboard, which was installed in Los Angeles, she took aim at Fox News. “There was some serious blowback to those billboards,” Fiorito says. She recalls not only death threats, but also threats of sexual assault. “I got a million calls and emails, mostly porn and hate mail.” And her computer was hacked as well, she says. Fiorito was hesitant to discuss more recent death threats in response to her Trump billboard, but readily shares her concern for others’ safety. “My concern is for Beatrice and her privacy, and the people who just happen to live under the sign,” Fiorito says. “I would hate for them to be harassed because of my artwork.”

Each side of the billboard reflects Fiorito’s own politics. She opposes Trump’s takes on immigration, reproductive rights, and militarization. And she questions Trump’s budget, citing cut funding for public broadcasting and the arts despite tax breaks for millionaires. “Everything is so apocalyptic and intense right now,” she says. “It feels like we’re about to explode.” Still, she wants to highlight the power of resistance and the beauty of diversity. Hence the unity message, with hands in different skin tones, on the back of the billboard. “I hate things that are solely negative, and I wanted to focus on the power people have when they come together.” This billboard is the latest in a long series of political artworks by Fiorito. Back in 2004, she designed a billboard for that same space. At the time, Fiorito was working on her master of fine arts degree at Arizona State University, where she specialized in printmaking. Earlier this year, five local artists organized a show called “Nasty Women: Phoenix Artists Unite” at Grand ArtHaus. Hundreds of artists participated, and all proceeds from sold artwork went to Planned Parenthood Arizona. For artists, it was a way to express opposition to Trump policies restricting civil rights, especially for women, immigrants, and the LGBT community. Several Phoenix artists also participated in the nationwide women’s march, either here or in New York City. Carlsberg beer etched swastikas onto its bottles. During World War I, the American 45th Infantry division wore an orange swastika as a shoulder patch. At least one train line had swastikas on its cars. The Girls’ Club published a magazine called The Swastika. And until 1940 the Boy Scouts gave out a swastika badge. The swastika came down as quickly as it ascended. In 1946 it was constitutionally banned from any public display in Germany. In the United States there has never been a law prohibiting the display of swastikas, but the aversion is still there. The question now is, should the swastika be reclaimed from the Nazis or should it continue to represent their ‘’unspeakable crimes’’? Now the swastikas have crept back into sight in the Western world. In the 1960’s, for example, the swastika was a recurring motif in geometric abstract art and

hard-edge painting, notably in an exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum. But the most concerted effort to redeem the swastika comes from Friends of the Swastika, a group formed in 1985 and based in the United States. The group, whose website promises that it ‘’has no connections to any racist propaganda’’ and no intention of denying the Holocaust, is led by an artist who claims to have 200 swastikas tattooed on his body. In order to ‘’detoxify’’ and ‘’resanctify’’ the swastika, the group sells T-shirts, stamps, postcards and ‘’other cool stuff’’ with swastikas. Their watchword is, ‘’To hell with Hitler!’’ Does it matter whether people use a swastika in ignorance, in hatred, or to rehabilitate it? No, Mr. Heller says: ‘’Nazi icons were strong enough to seduce a nation and still contain a graphic power that can be unleashed today.’’ The swastika defenders counter with the question: ‘’How can a symbol be guilty for the acts of a madman?’’ South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley

In Germany, though, the post-war question about the swastika is not over whether an old racist symbol should be displayed on government buildings or sold in major retailers, but whether it should be allowed in public at all. While some might like to see a similar zealousness applied to the suppression of the Confederate flag, the German case also provides an example of how such blanket bans can be counterproductive. For one thing, the law hasn’t stopped the surreptitious use of the swastika and the Hitler salute by far-right groups. Its taboo status may even enhance its appeal, with the symbol of an authoritarian state ironically transformed into a symbol of rebellion against state authority. Given America’s comparatively absolutist attitude toward free speech, it’s hard to imagine the Confederate flag being suppressed in a similar way (Bill Kristol’s dire warnings

Roger S. Dunn 6/22/1924 – 7/6/2017 Who served as Quartermaster on the USS Bunker Hill, which was one of 24 Essex-class aircraft carriers built during World War II for the United States Navy. The ship was named for the Battle of Bunker Hill in the American Revolutionary War. Known as “Sam, the telephone man” by his Florida friends! Teaching About the Holocaust In 2017 Holocaust in 2017, the events of Charlottesville should make that clear. I’ve been asked over the last few days to talk about the new face of American white supremacy. While no expert in contemporary Nazism, I do not see a new face. The neo-Nazis of today marched through the University of Virginia campus, thrusting lit torches into the air while screaming racist invectives. Who could witness that scene and not immediately be transported to scenes of lynchings, pogroms, and auto-defes of the past? People throughout the centuries try to justify their own hatred and bigotry by exploiting the fears and prejudices of their contemporary societies, using the tools they had at their disposal to try to make hate palatable to the general public. The “new face” of fascism in

America is no different. While they may refer to their narrative as competing or “alternative”, it is not new. It is the same narrative of hate, coated now in 21st century clothing. At The Florida Holocaust Museum, we use the lessons of the Holocaust to help identify the ominous echoes of history. We believe that the best way to combat prejudice and bigotry is to educate about the terrible consequences of unchecked hatred. In that spirit, the Museum has partnered with Eckerd College to present Frank Meeink, author of Autobiography of a Recovering Skinhead. I invite our community to join us in Eckerd’s Fox Hall on September 7 from 7-9pm to learn more about the white supremacist movement and, more importantly, to find hope.
