Valentine’s Day—One of America’s Most Popular Days
There’s no doubt that Valentine’s Day is one of America’s most popular days. More than 62% of Americans celebrate by sending greeting cards, flowers, candy, jewelry, or by enjoying a romantic dinner. But the origin of Valentine’s Day is surprising. For example, the roots behind Valentine’s Day go all the way back to an ancient Roman fraternity fest held in mid-February called Lupercalia. Later, the Christian church chose midFebruary for Saint Valentine’s Day in order to Christianize the celebration, but who was St. Valentine? Not much was known about the holiday’s namesake. First of all, there was more than one such Christian priest. One thought it was unjust and defied the Emperor and continued to marry young lovers in secret. Emperor Claudius II banned marriage for young

Since my personal training studio has helped over 3,000 women lose weight, I tend to hear the same things over and over again: “I am so tired that I don’t even have the energy to play with my kids at night, let alone really spend time with my husband,” or “I can’t imagine what I could actually accomplish if I wasn’t always thinking about my weight or what I am going to wear,”

How can you love your neighbor as yourself if you don’t even love YOU? your health and mental well-being. It’s called responsibility for your body. Guess what? The body you have right now is the only body you get until the day you die, so why not start loving it and taking care of it NOW? Recently, GFWC Lutz-Land O’ Lakes Woman’s Club and the Little Women of

This event was chaired by Woman’s Club Ciel Birkett and was another example of the ladies in this service organization sponsoring, supporting, and mentoring their teenage club. The Little Women, like the Woman’s Club, is part of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs, the oldest and largest women’s international volunteer organization. For more information on either club, please visit the website online today at www.gfwclutzlandolakeswomansclub.org.
GFWC Honors Husbands GFWC Lutz-Land O’ Lakes Woman’s Club at their recent luncheon honored the hard-working husbands who unfailingly step up to help the ladies throughout the year with their various community activities and projects. These outstanding men provide much-needed muscle and manpower, not only for their wives but for their community. Many of the husbands were unable to attend this function but are very much appreciated nonetheless. Lutz Volunteer Fire Dept. Scholarship The Lutz Volunteer Fire Department has honored the GFWC Lutz-Land O’ Lakes Woman’s Club, Inc. by selecting it to serve as administrator and guardian of its newly established “Lutz Volunteer Memorial Fireman’s Scholarship Fund.” Since Hillsborough County mandated that the six remaining area volunteer firehouses be decommissioned and replaced by professional firefighters (effective Jan. 1, 2013) our long-serving Lutz firehouse had no alternative but to disband and liquidate all its assets. After long and careful consideration, the Lutz Volunteer F.D. board of directors under the direction of board president Jay Muffly and director Gordon T. Brown, felt that after more than 60 years of distinguished service to the Lutz community and in the early years much of North Tampa, the best legacy they could leave to the Lutz community would be an endowed scholarship fund. Hopefully, this endowment will be funded for at least the next 25 years or longer, depending upon the investment market. A minimum of two annual scholarships of at least $2,500 each will be awarded to Lutz residents. The scholarship criteria simply requires that two recipients be selected annually by the long-established Woman’s Club scholarship committee chaired by Barbara Nicholson, that they be residents of Lutz and attend (or will enroll in) a fully accredited university or college.
The scholarships are restricted to Lutz residents due to the fact that the funds in the endowment fund are monies which were donated annually by Lutz residents and Lutz businesses to help support their own local volunteer fire department. The endowment fund will be in the approximate amount of $266,000 as of this time, but individuals and/or businesses may continue to donate to this scholarship fund and allow it to continue not only for the next two and a half decades, but ad infinitum as a testament to the brave men and women who volunteered hundreds and thousands of hours to fire response and EMT service to our Lutz community from its inception in 1952 through its recent closing. The GFWC Lutz-Land O’ Lakes Woman’s Club, Inc., which has through the years closely collaborated with and supported the Lutz Volunteer Fire Department, considers it a great honor and privilege to carry out the wishes of the former F.D. and to act as guardians and administrators of this fund. What better means could the F.D. possibly choose to have the greatest, most long-lasting and positive effect on the Lutz community than to fund a decades-long scholarship endowment for the residents of Lutz. The first two recipients chosen to receive the two annual scholarships for 2013 are Mary Canton and Dylan Waddle, who attend the University of Central Florida and Pasco-Hernando Community College, respectively.

Move Over, Lutz Little League On January 1, 2014, a new era begins. Lutz Little League will change to “Lutz Baseball” and re-charter as Cal Ripken/Babe Ruth to join six other Tampa area Little Leagues in recent months to do so. The impact of travel-teams taking players, Little League’s inflexibility, old-fashioned rules, and constricted boundaries are common themes throughout and responsible for changing the landscape as we know it. “The advantage of Cal Ripken/Babe Ruth is broader league boundaries, playing the “real” rules of baseball, and most importantly, the teaching of advanced skills which will enable greater player growth.
From Tee Ball (age 4-5) through Big League (age 16-18), a child who enters the league at Tee Ball will now be appropriately coached to play baseball as we know it,” said Dave Crawford, Lutz Baseball league President. “The dual benefit being that the players learn significantly earlier compared to Little League, they’ll receive progressive instruction needed to qualify and compete at higher levels, and the league benefits by keeping its travel-team players home.” Baseball at Oscar Cooler Park is not ending. Lutz Baseball is strategically merging the best of tradition with the inevitability of modern-day evolution to meet the demands of this enormously baseball-rich community. Welcome Back, Coach Lovie Article and photo by Jeffrey Neil Fox
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers hired Lovie Smith as the new head coach. Smith was the former head coach of the Chicago Bears, and he replaced ousted Buccaneer head coach Greg Schiano. Smith was an assistant coach with the Buccaneers when Tony Dungy was at the helm. The Buccaneers, who entered the 2013 season with high expectations, stumbled to an 0-8 start before finishing 4-12. The fans of the Pewter Pirates are restless and want their team to return to the playoffs and be a formidable contender to bring home another Super Bowl trophy. Football purists thought that the Buccaneers team had the right personnel roster and the formula for success last season with high profile offseason acquisitions of talented players. Former head coach Greg Schiano was embroiled with controversy over the benching and then releasing of the team’s seasoned field general, quarterback Josh Freeman. The Buccaneers owners are excited about the hiring of Lovie Smith and believe that he will bring balance to the team and turn
the team into a winner right out of the gate. Smith is familiar with the organization, and he is a disciplined and popular coach. The team has accumulated a good deal of talent, and it’s time for the team to move ahead to the future. Smith is well-respected in the NFL and has a track record of orchestrating one of the top defensive teams in the NFL. He did win an NFC championship when he was with the Bears. There is no doubt that Tampa’s defense will be strong next year. They have Pro Bowlers in defensive tackle Gerald McCoy and defensive back Darrell Revis returning to head up the defense. There are some question marks on the offensive side. The jury is out about the team’s quarterback, Mike Glennon, who just finished his rookie season after replacing Josh Freeman. It doesn’t appear that the team will be overly active in free agent acquisitions, and they are positioned well in the upcoming draft. There are many new faces at One Buccaneer Place, starting with the head coach, general manager, and all the assistant coaches that have been hired. I’m excited about the prospects of success and to see every seat filled up, no blackouts, and the team returning to competitive form. It has been 11 years since the Buccaneers won their inaugural Super Bowl. I’m sure they will make room for another silver Vince Lombardi trophy if the team is fortunate enough to fight their way through the playoffs and represent the NFC and win at the big show. “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.” — 1 Corinthians 13:4-7
Greetings from Belmont Abbey College
Belmont Abbey FOCUS team (left to right: Cassie, Tyler, Jonathan, and Aly) getting ready to March in D.C.!
I am in full-swing as a missionary on a new campus! At the beginning of this year, I joined my new team of missionaries at the Abbey and jumped right into our ministry of reaching out to college students. In the past
few weeks, I have met a great deal of female students that have been very welcoming and receptive! At the end of January, we joined over 90 Belmont students on a pilgrimage to Washington, D.C. for the March for Life! I will be mentoring two new women and will be starting a couple of Bible studies by February all while enjoying the endless opportunities of meeting new students every day and introducing them to the person of Jesus Christ! For more information, please contact Cassie at cassie.llano@focus.org or (813)716-6942. To donate directly to Cassie’s ministry with FOCUS, please go online to www.focus.org/ goto/cassiellano.
Valentine’s Day—One of America’s Most Popular Days Continued from Page 1
Roman men, thinking single men made better soldiers Eventually, the Emperor caught on to the priest’s actions, and he was arrested and sentenced to death. Pope Gelasius declared February 14th as the date honoring Valentine’s Day near the end of the 5th century. It wasn’t until the 1300’s that the holiday became associated with love and romance. Back then, people believed that February 14th also was the beginning of the birds’ mating season. The first written Valentine greeting appeared in the 15th century, and by the 17th century people in Great Britain had begun a tradition of exchanging Val-
entine cards or letters. Valentine’s Day soon caught on in the U.S. as well. The first mass-produced holiday cards emerged in 1840, and Valentine’s Day soon exploded into a major consumer holiday. Today, an estimated 1 billion Valentine cards are sent each year, more than any other holiday except for Christmas. More than 35 million heart-shaped boxes of chocolate are sold, and 220 million roses produced for the holiday in a year. Altogether, Americans spend around $20 billion on Valentine’s Day, an average of $130 dollars per person per year. While the most popular gifts were candy and flowers, nearly 20% of Americans splurge on jewelry, shelling out $4 billion annually. Those who prefer the ultimate romantic gesture are definitely not alone. A recent survey reveals at least six million couples are likely to get engaged on February 14th. http://www.history.com/videos/ history-of-valentines-day#bet-you-didntknow-valentines-day

Donations Needed for Veterans Thrift Store
We need donated furniture, clothing, and accessories to originate the first “Veterans Thrift Store” in our community. The objective of this initiative is two-fold, for it will provide veterans an employment opportunity, creating income and leading them to self-sufficiency. Additionally, it will provide Liberty Manor the means to become self-sufficient as well!
Liberty Manor is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that assists and houses homeless veterans in our community. Please consider donating your furniture or purchasing your household items and furniture at the “Veterans Thrift Store.” Volunteer or make a financial contribution to help a veteran in our community. We believe this is one of the most meritorious initiatives in the world! What better opportunity than to make an investment in the future of a veteran who has served our country so honorably.
