The baseball and softball youth program formerly known as New Tampa Little League has forged the way forward in becoming a Babe Ruth/Cal Ripken league. With its new identity as the North Tampa Athletic Association (NTAA), they will have more flexibility in the way kids play ball. NTAA now operates under the Babe Ruth/Cal Ripken charter at its locations in New Tampa. Its doors are open to a much wider catchment area, including Wesley Chapel, Zephyrhills, Land O’ Lakes, Temple Terrace, and Carrollwood. “Under the Babe Ruth/Cal Ripken program, we now have the freedom to modify our league structure in the best interests
of our kids. The quality of our fields and coaching will remain top notch, but we will be able to offer much more to players of all skill levels,” explains Charles Clark, NTAA President. Some of the changes include the modification of base distances to cater to players of different abilities and unlimited All-Stars teams. Fifty service-members from MacDill Air Force Base partook in the first ever ‘Hooked
for the Holidays’ fishing event, Dec. 20, 2013, due to generous donations from five Tampa Bay community organizations. Leaving the docks from Madeira Beach, Fla. on the Hubbard Marina’s Friendly Fisherman, the group set off to their destination, a sunken reef, eight miles out in the Gulf of Mexico. Upon arrival, and for the next three hours, the group fished, joked, and networked. “This event was a wonderful chance for us to relax and get to know some really great people,” said Senior Airman Hector Mendez-Chavez, 6th Medical Group bioenvironmental engineering technician, and heir to the biggest catch of the day. “I loved every minute of it.” At the end of the day, the group brought back over 100 fish, mainly snapper and grouper, which were cleaned, packaged and ready for the service-members to take home and enjoy.

With the holidays still present in our minds and some of you still playing with your train sets, let’s compare an electric train traveling on a circular track to the golf swing through several experiments. I personally had a train set that could either be pulled by the engine or pushed by the caboose, and the passenger cars were linked together by metal clasps. 1. When the engine pulls the train on a circular track, the links holding the cars together are pulled taut. When your legs power rotation in a golf swing, your body automatically unwinds and your golf swing remains taut and controlled. The feeling is that of effortless power! IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT THE POWERING MOVEMENT IS CIRCULAR OR ROTARY. If you slide your hips laterally or sway past the golf ball, a train wreck is imminent the same as if the train fails to curve around the tracks.
2. When the caboose pushes the train, the links holding the cars together get jammed together and pile up as in a train wreck. When your right shoulder pushes your golf club into the ball, your swing becomes jammed up as well, resulting in an uneasy forced swing motion or powerless effort. It is essential that the powering of a golf club is generated from a pivot (rotary power) from your legs and core. 3. When the engine pulls the train around the curve, the cars have a tendency to lean outward with the last car wanting to whip. When your legs, body, and shoulders rotate, the golf club has the freedom to accelerate and to pull outward with the trailing club head aligning itself automatically and smashing through the ball. 4. If the train hits an obstacle in the track regardless if it is being pushed by the caboose or pulled by the engine, the cars will pile up in a train wreck. If you stop your body from rotating to hit at the golf ball, your golf swing will also result in a train wreck. My swing thought through the holidays and forever will be to keep my swing pulled taut, powered by the rotating body engine and a lateral sway or sliding of the hips! Women-N-Charge Raises Funds On September 28, 2013, Women-nCharge—whose mission, in part, is to support and assist professional women in managing their businesses more effectively—held their annual fundraising tea event to raise funds for their grant program. The tea, which was held at the Groves Golf & Country Club with the event and scholarship sponsor being Centennial Bank, was a huge success. Rowdies Re-sign 2013 NASL MVP Georgi Hristov The Rowdies announced the club has signed 2013 NASL Golden Ball winner Georgi Hristov to a four-year contract, with the third and fourth year being a club option. Hristov (6-0, 165) capped off a prolific first season with the Rowdies, earning the 2013 NASL Golden Ball (league’s Most Valuable Player) and a spot on the NASL Best XI. In 1,834 minutes played, the forward scored 12 goals, which kept him in the race for the Golden Boot until the last match of the season. Hristov netted three goals in three 2013 Lamar Hunt U. S. Open Cup matches, while having eight assists—tied for the most in the NASL. Hristov’s most memorable goal came on May 29 when the Rowdies hosted Major League Soccer’s Seattle Sounders in the third round of the U.S. Open Cup. The Bulgarian forward scored the lone goal of the match in the 75th minute, when he picked up a rebound inside the 6-yard box and placed his strike in the back of the net. His
goal against the three-time champions sent the Rowdies into the fourth round of the cup, where they would later face the Portland Timbers. Rowdies Sign Defender Blake Wagner The Rowdies announced on Friday the signing of defender Blake Wagner to a two-year contract, plus a club option for a third year. Wagner (5-10, 170), originally from Atlanta, GA., joins the Rowdies after playing two seasons with NASL’s San Antonio Scorpions. During his time in San Antonio, Wagner played a pivotal role in the back line, where he not only provided defensive stability, but he was also an attacking threat down the left flank. In two seasons with the Scorpions, Wagner played 47 matches and scored three goals. Wagner began his soccer career when he was identified by U.S. Soccer through their national Olympic Development Program. While he was with the U-14 team, Wagner was recruited to U.S. Soccer‘s U-15 residency program at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. Wagner was a starter with the U.S. National Team that competed at the 2005 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Peru. The Liberty Middle School media center hosted its fifth annual Poetry Jam on November 15, 2013. Ms. Molly Hays opened the event by sharing several poems from Hope Anita Smith’s Keeping the Night Watch and Mother Poems. Students found many poems spread across the tables which inspired them to share with each other. The students learned to write different types of poems such as Synonym Poems and Opposites Poems. When the time came for judging, fifteen brave but nervous souls came forward to share their original poems with the group. Though it was difficult to narrow down, the judges had to choose three winners In first place was Caetlin Dempsey, in second place was Shania Norman, and in third place was Chepelle Johnson. Captain Ric’s Fish Tales Reel Simple Fishing Adventures

It’s hard to believe that we are closing out another year already. The saying “The older you get, the faster time flies,” is true. Time is starting to hit a pretty rapid pace for me now as I am approaching the big 50. With another year behind us, I want to thank Mark and Kay Dunn and their staff at Dunndeal Publications for allowing me to share what’s happening on the water. One of the email questions I received this month came from one of our winter visitors. The question was, “How much effect do the cold fronts have this time of year on the fishing?” This is the time of the year in the Tampa Bay area that you really don’t know what you are going to get when it comes to weather. You can always depend on heat and afternoon showers in the summer. In the spring and fall, we will have a little more wind than normal with the fronts moving through. But this time of year, the range of weather is at its widest. It can be 80 degrees with no wind or it can be 40 degrees with winds cranking at 30 knots. The weather always plays a significant role in the success of our fishing, but when the weather is changing every few days, we
always need to adjust as the fish will not fall into any predictable pattern as conditions change. The fronts bring high pressure, which makes anglers work harder. A high barometer will push fish down. I try to fish my baits closer to the bottom when the barometer is high. What adjustments we make from trip to trip will be dependent on the species of fish we are targeting. It’s a big puzzle and as anglers we have to try to piece it together. For me, that is the attraction to the sport. If you were to catch a fish on every cast on every fishing trip, you would most likely tire from the lack of a challenge. The best advice I have for fishing in the winter is to pay closer attention to the water temps and the barometer. Fish want to be comfortable like any other creature. In-shore anglers do a lot of fishing in the rivers, canals, and creeks during the cooler months with water temp, other than tide, being the main driver in our success. If you are new to fishing in tidal-affected areas, you will want to know that our winter tides are our lowest tides of the year. That is good for fishing but not so good if you do not know where the sand bars and shallow flats are in the area you are fishing. It’s always good to do a scouting trip on a low water tide to make a mental picture of the trouble areas. They are very seldom marked with caution. Hopefully this is useful information. Welcome to another new year. Last year is well behind us now, and a rear-view mirror is smaller on purpose. Sure, we can look back, but the now and future is what we can change. Last year is in the history books. Our Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the University of South Florida Bulls did not have good years as far as the wins and losses goes. It’s easy looking back to pinpoint what went right and what went wrong. I’m the proverbial optimist, and I’m looking for our teams to bounce back and have exciting seasons in the upcoming year. I’m sure there will be many changes during the offseason. On the professional level, players come and go and you need a roster to tell who the new players are. It is rare that a player starts his career and ends his tenure as a professional with the same team. Many factors go into the decisionmaking process as to what players to keep and what players to trade away. I know the Buccaneers will be active in free agent acquisition and they will be positioned for good draft picks. Injuries play a role and the general manager’s and coaching staff’s goal is to assemble a team that will be most likely to succeed. On the college level it is different since the players are not paid and are recruited
out of high school. USF is competing with other powerhouse teams across the state and country for the elite high school players. It would be grand if the USF Bulls could play competitive and get nationally ranked again and fill up Raymond James Stadium. I love the pageantry of the USF college games at the stadium. Rocky D. Bull is one of the best mascots in all of college. I enjoy the marching band, the cheerleaders, the Sun Dolls, and all the activities and promotions before and during the game. Winning is everything! I’m looking for both our Bucs and Bulls to play competitive football in 2014. I do know that winning football games will fill every seat in Raymond James Stadium. I like looking at a full stadium. Am I asking too much for our Bucs to fight their way to the playoffs and our Bulls to win their conference and get invited again to postseason bowl games? He interacts with our lives. And we can interact with Him. It is the most amazing, loving, assuring, comforting, strengthening, confidence-building, esteeming truth I know. We don’t walk this life alone, even when we are separated from loved ones. We don’t struggle alone with our problems. We don’t strive alone to make something out of our lives. We don’t suffer alone. The Lord is with us. He walks with us, looks out for us, guides us, and works with us because He loves us. One more thought. I don’t have to go to Heaven to experience God’s presence. I can experience it “as I live here on earth.” All I have to do is talk (pray) to Him. I don’t know what 2014 will look like for you, but I do know that you can experience God’s presence as you live through this year. Spend some time talking with Him. Learn about His love for you, His pleasure in you, and His favor over you. It can change the way you look at Him, at yourself, at your life, and at this year. May you have a Happy and Blessed New Year. But more importantly, may you experience God’s presence as you walk through 2014.
Psalm 116:19 reads, “And so I walk in the Lord’s presence as I live here on earth.” How does this make you feel? No matter where you go, what you do, or what circumstances surround you, God is there. He is always present. He is always aware. I first heard this truth when I was a little boy. My parents would say, “God is always looking and He sees everything you do, even when we don’t.” It wasn’t a very comforting feeling. It felt like God was always watching me, waiting to see me do something wrong. Then He would get mad at me and tell my parents. God’s presence was not a comfort or a source of strength. It was something to fear and dread. I didn’t like the fact God was always with me. But that has changed for me. What changed it? I learned that God does not just watch us, He watches over us. FOCUS—University Team of Missionaries My First Semester, submitted by Cassie Llano
Four months have passed since I began my journey as a campus missionary with FOCUS – the Fellowship of Catholic University Students. Beginning move-in weekend at the University of Florida, the team of missionaries and myself embarked on our fall outreach strategic evangelization plan. Our goal was to meet and befriend five hundred incoming freshmen and returning students in one week during the “Weeks of Welcome.” We spent many days doing more than sixteen hours a day of hosting events at the parish, walking around the campus, meeting with new students, and inviting them to experience the richness of a Christian faith in college. At the end of our outreach, we surpassed our goal and invited over five hundred students to deepen their faith through over fifty different small group Bible studies. I led four small groups this semester with over twenty girls that I reached out to one on a one-on-one basis. One particular instance was a freshmen varsity women’s soccer player named Steph. With her first semester at UF, she was looking for a way to find a caring and loving community. I invited Steph to join my Bible study and she seemed very enthusiastic. The next week, she showed up early and immediately began to open up about her life and her struggles as an injured athlete. I could tell that she was looking for a place to belong and a deeper meaning to her time as a student. While attending weekly Bible studies without fail, she
steadily grew in her faith. As her relationship with Christ deepened, she realized fully her self worth beyond her physical abilities. At the end of the semester, I could tell how much she had changed and how ready she was to share this newfound love for Christ with others, so I invited her to join the student leadership program with FOCUS. Next semester, she will be trained to lead her own Bible study. This is just one of the many individual women that I was blessed to work with this fall. Being a campus missionary, our sole tool is the building of strong relationships with our students, modeling discipleship with Christ on the hardest place to live out authentic faith, a college campus. Next semester, I will be continuing to reach out to students in North Carolina. From the publisher. In July 2013, Cassie was completing a course for an engineering degree. What You Didn’t Know About New Year Celebrations For many all-around the world, January 1st offers opportunity to make a fresh start with a new year. But you probably didn’t know over the last 4000 years wasn’t always celebrated January 1st. The original New Year’s celebration in the massive Babylonian religion festival of AKITU was held every year around the spring equinox. In 46 BC, Julius Caesar introduced a new calendar that was in sync to the sun instead of the moon, officially moving New Year’s celebration from March 1 to January 1st. In the Middle Ages, the Christian church did away with many of the ancient Roman festivals because of the pagan roots. As a result, New Year’s was celebrated on various dates throughout Europe. Finally in 1582,
Pope Gregory XIII overhauled the calendar system again. In the Gagarin Calendar, which we still use today, we store January 1st as the New Year’s day. Even today some countries and cultures follow the lunar, not solar, calendar and hold their New Year’s celebrations at different times of the year. Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year and the first day of Muharram, the start of the Islamic Calendar year, are both celebrated in the fall and the Chinese New Year Day, which lasts for a whole month, begins in late January or early February. New Year’s traditions also vary from country to country. In Spain, people eat 12 grapes leading up to the seconds to midnight. Other cultures also eat

special foods for the holidays. Greeks eat green - shaped cakes with silver or gold coins baked inside. In China, a dumpling represents hope for Auspicious new year and in Japan, long buckwheat noodles symbolize long life. Since 1904, crowds have packed New York Times Square for one of the most famous traditions of all -- the dropping of the ball. At midnight, hundreds of thousands of people gather in celebration with champagne, fireworks, resolution and fresh starts.
