The Secret to Her Success Pure Health Studios

My name is Sandy. My decline in health caused me to become more overweight until I was categorized as obese, leading toa pre-diabetic state and chronic depression. It was a gradual decline that made me feel a lot older than my actual age. I knew that I did not like the way I felt or looked and needed to take charge of my health. You see, diabetes runs in my family and I have a “phobia” of needles, so I certainly did not want to be in a position where I needed to inject myself with insulin every day! When January approached, I began to ponder my goals for the new year. That is when I saw an article about Pure Health & Fitness Studios. They just opened their new, beautiful, all-women facility in Land O’ Lakes just 10 minutes away from my home. I looked at this new, convenient location to my home as a “sign from God” and booked an appointment with Samantha Taylor to check it out. Upon my initial consultation with Samantha, we spoke about the dangers of living with diabetes and the horrific results this disease can take on the body as well as the effects of prescription depression medication. She also explained the benefits of working out with some of the most topnotch trainers in the area! I walked away from that appointment feeling confident that I had finally found the right place for me, a place where I could feel supported. If you are like me, I am the type of person who needs accountability when it comes to exercise. I cannot tell you how many gym memberships I have had in my life, just watching these gyms take money from my bank account even though I wasn’t going. How frustrating! But Samantha assured me that I could participate in one-on-one training, semi-private training, and even group training sessions that would work

with my schedule. The trainers show me how to perform each exercise and use the equipment properly so that I get maximum results during my workouts. Monthly measurements, weekly weighins, educational videos & CDs, motivational emails, texts & voicemails are just some of the continual follow up that Samantha and her team provide to help me track my progress and stay motivated. This really makes me feel extra special. At gyms, I have always felt like just another face in a sea of people, but not here! Everyone I have interacted with here knows me by my name. I have made some new friends who I can bond with, we keep each other motivated, and we celebrate our success as we reach our goals! Feeling great in my body depends on what I feed myself on a daily basis, yet no one is perfect. Samantha and her team provide lots of great tips and recipes for planning meals. I am really inspired to cook foods at home and convert my old “comfort foods” into healthy, delicious meals that really satisfy. Moving away from fast food and getting back into the kitchen has been a joyful experience and I have realized that there are lots of meals and snacks that can be made in no time at all! In addition, understanding which food choices will help me reach my weight loss goals has been very beneficial when I do go out to eat at restaurants. I am so happy that I made the choice to get healthier, for I have completed my first 5 weeks so far and have lost 10 pounds. I look forward to all of the AWESOME results yet to come. Thank you, Samantha, for believing in me – I am on my way to a brand new lifestyle and couldn’t be happier about it!

The pressure in the grip becomes firmest as the momentum of the club increases and the fingers and hands react to its increasing momentum as the club strikes though the golf ball where the back three fingers of the left or lead hand will have the most pressure exerted on them, however I don’t want your left hand to squeeze the grip tensely. The great golfer and teacher Tommy Armour, the Silver Scot, suggested that the index finger and thumb of the right or trail hand should instinctively whip the club through the ball as if throwing a baseball sidearm or underhand, the same as Ben Hogan advocated. To achieve this, the hands and fingers must hold the grip light and sense the weight of club head in a balanced opposition to its momentum throughout the swing motion This feel is serious stuff and is important to achieving effortless power and a consistent repeating swing momentum and arc when you play golf. This technique may seem difficult to achieve, but it’s really not! And once you achieve this feel it’s like playing golf with one thought that will make thirty things happen automatically instead of thinking thirty thoughts to make one thing happen, resulting in brain burst. Remember, let the club float like a butterfly and swing like a bee!

This image of the great golfer Jack Nicklaus helps illustrate the lightness and quickness of the hands, arms, and especially fingers, whipping the club through the ball with great speed. I always tell my students to sense that your swing would feel light, like the boxer Muhammad Ali’s light and quick jabbing style, “as floating like a butterfly and stinging like a bee.” You want to swing the club with lightness and not heaviness like the boxing style of George Foreman. Do not grip the club with a choke hold, tensing your forearms and slowing the ability of the hands and fingers to release energy to the club head. Grip the club lightly and sense the weight of the club head swinging naturally up on the back swing and down on the through swing. I remember being asked to categorize what my grip pressure was by picking a number from 1 to 10 throughout the golf swing, with the number 1 being the lightest pressure and 10 representing the firmest pressure. I replied, “At what stage of the golf Rick Bradshaw swing would you like me to give you that Award-Winning PGA Teaching Profesnumber?” because my pressure will be sional lightest at the top of the back swing, where Dent/Bradshaw Golf School the club is virtually free of tension when Heritage Isles Golf & Country Club it reverses direction to swing back down www.tourexperience.com and through the ball. 813-220-8099

The Golden Age of Jewish Humor

Local Author Publishes New Novel Local author L. A. Lewandowski found Tampa the perfect setting for her new, stylish murder mystery, A Gourmet Demise: Murder in South Tampa, the sequel to her first novel, Born to Die: The Montauk Murders. The new book is the result of more than two years of research on local culture, gourmet food, and Cuban Santeria. In A Gourmet Demise, Ms. Lewandowski portrays the city of Tampa as no longer a forgotten backwater. Instead, it has evolved into a sophisticated paradise for modern day pirates and elegant socialites. Ms. Lewandowski portrays a side of Tampa that many do not see. “The book overflows with what makes the Tampa Bay area the sultry haven it is,” she said. “Behind the manicured lawns of the waterfront mansions and palm-tree lined drives,

secrets are whispered and confidences broken. Santeria, a misunderstood religion, rears its head as both an inspiration for an art exhibit and a motive for the slayings.” A Gourmet Demise: Murder in South Tampa is available in both print and electronic editions at all major online retailers. The author was born and raised in New Jersey and graduated from Rutgers University. She has lived in Tampa for twenty years and has grown to appreciate the Tampa Bay lifestyle. A Gourmet Demise is her third novel. For more information, please visit her Amazon author page at http://www.amazon.com/ L.-A.-Lewandowski/e/B006F8BY9W. Featuring Stephen Z. Cohen, Ph.D., Scholar-in-Residence. Friday, March 28, 7:30pm and Sunday, March 30, 10:00am11:30am at Congregation Schaarai Zedek, 3303 West Swann Avenue, Tampa. In his two-part entertaining lecture series, Dr. Stephen Cohen explores many aspects of the Jewish experience as illustrated in Jewish jokes and stories. He will explain what makes a joke Jewish, as well as what makes a Jewish joke funny. The audience will laugh through tears as this Jewish scholar and humorist teaches about traditions and behaviors as reflected in Jewish life. Part I: Friday, March 28 – 7:30pm In the first part of Dr. Cohen’s series, he will explore the history and definition of Jewish humor, laughing as the Jewish people learn, just as they have always done. Part II: Sunday, March 30 – 10:00am Dr. Cohen will explore the differences and similarities of Jewish humor in different

cultures and historic periods, including the American Jewish immigrant experience. Best described as a humorist rather than a comedian, Dr. Cohen has the insightful commentary of Sam Levenson and the exceptional presentation skills of the legendary Myron Cohen. He is noted for his adept selection of clean, uproarious material. With his effortless delivery, innate timing, impeccable dialect, relaxed manner and warm rapport, he is always engaged with his audience, and his gift of laughter is reflected on smiling faces. A lifelong Chicagoan, Dr. Cohen has been a popular guest speaker for Jewish Federations and organizations, a Scholarin-Residence for synagogues and temples, a visiting scholar for Jewish studies programs, and a performer. For 40 years, he was a distinguished educator at the University of Chicago and the University of Illinois at Chicago teaching social group work practice and group psychotherapy. An early expert in the field of gerontology and services to the elderly, he consulted, lectured, and co-authored a book on these topics. The public is invited to attend this twopart lecture series. Will You Commit to Pray For Our Nation In 2014?

In the face of widespread insecurity, fear, and hopelessness, our nation desperately needs your prayers. Today we are surrounded by the effects of forgetting—even forsaking—God, both as a nation and as individuals. The problem is too big for human effort. Our nation has a heart problem, and only God can fix it. Will you join us in prayer as we ask God to heal our land? We have a promise from the Lord: “If

my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land” (2 Chronicles 7:14, NIV). Please also join us in prayer for the millions of individuals who are at a critical crossroad and don’t even know it. Pray that those who don’t know Jesus Christ will turn and find forgiveness, hope, and peace in Him. Let’s stand together and ask God to pour out His Spirit on our nation in 2012. Commit to join us today in concerted prayer, and we’ll send you updates on the lifesaving work of evangelism. https://secure.billygraham.org/prayfor-our-nation/pray-for-our-nation.asp x?SOURCE=BY120PRAG&gclid=CKCx i_TVw68CFWvktgodynrdaQ

GFWC Junior Woman’s Club The GFWC Pasco Junior Woman’s Club continues to be busy this year! At our February club meeting, the International Outreach CSP hosted speaker Lorraine Dabney, member of the Lutz-Land O’ Lakes Woman’s Club. She gave a demonstration and instructed the Juniors’ members on how to make little girls’ sundresses from pillowcases! These dresses, when finished, are shipped to third world countries such as Guatemala or Africa and are perfect outfits for the heat that is well known in those countries. It seems fairly simple—just fold the pillow case in half length-wise and cut an armhole on either side. Then sew bias tape around the armholes and finish up with bric-a-brac for decoration. You can either stitch or sew ribbon for the shoulders. The Juniors are in need of donations of printed pillowcases so they can begin this project. To donate pillowcases, please call Sharon Grace at (813) 632-2773. This is a very worthwhile project! The Juniors are also donating their spare

change to our “Heifer Box”! Donations made to Heifer International go towards the purchase of a dairy animal in third world countries. Our next meeting is Tuesday, March 4 at 6:30pm at the Seven Oaks Clubhouse in Wesley Chapel. Members will be making “Empowerment Cards” to donate to the female inmates at the Pasco County Jail and for the women at Sunrise of Pasco County, a domestic violence shelter. If you would like more information about the club or would like to attend their upcoming meeting, please call Sharon at 813- 632-2773 or send an email to gfwclutzpascojwc@gmail.com. Destiny Malaise

What is Destiny Malaise? It is the overwhelming sense of dread that comes on a person when they reach a stage in life and realize that they do not have enough life left to complete what they were put on this earth to accomplish. Why does this happen to a person? The number one reason is that a person does not even know what they were supposed to accomplish. They don’t know what God’s plan and purpose for their life is. This is assuming that a person believes in God and believes that God does have a very specific and personal plan for each person’s life. Psalm 139:14 says, “I will praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, and that my soul knows very well.” If you do not have the kind of God connection that can give you the confidence and assurance that you can be in the center

of God’s will for your life, let’s resolve that issue immediately. The Bible says in Romans 10:9-10, “that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” Have you have examined the claims of Jesus and the Bible enough to be convinced that Jesus really is who He said that He is, the Son of God who came to take away our sins and place us into God’s eternal family? If the answer is yes, all you need to do to seal the deal is to confess Jesus as your own personal Savior and Lord. You do this by a simple prayer, saying, “Jesus, I believe that you died for my sins, and that God proved this to be true by raising you form the dead. Please come into my heart and life and be my Savior and the Lord of my life and my destiny.” If you prayed this prayer, or if Jesus is already the Lord of your life, make sure that you find a good Bible-believing church to attend to help you in your spiritual journey. Bishop McLaughlin’s Unique Tuition Structure Pasco County’s Catholic High School, Bishop McLaughlin, announced today a significant change in its tuition structure. Effective for the 2014/2015 academic year, the school has eliminated the one tuition for all students model and replaced it with a tiered structure based on family income. The new structure is being implemented for the sole purpose of providing a Christ-centered Catholic education to all students including those who lack the financial means to afford the school’s full tuition amount. The Diocese of St. Petersburg and Bishop McLaughlin Catholic High School are instituting this dramatic change in response to the number of students seeking the private school education, qualifying for admission but not registering due to financial concerns. The high school welcomes students of all faiths who will also be offered the variable tuition rates. Bishop McLaughlin’s Principal, Kristen Kant, as well as the Diocesan Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Alberto Matos, are excited to introduce this unique method of determining tuition to our region’s high school students. It is believed that this tuition structure is unique to the area and presents a greater opportunity to offer an exceptional education to all students. According to Mrs. Kant, “We are so pleased to initiate this

new structure as it will allow many more families the opportunity to provide their children with a faith-filled Catholic education of the highest caliber.” Bishop McLaughlin Catholic High School is one of four Catholic High Schools in the Diocese of St. Petersburg. The school campus is located in Hudson on 100 acres. Opened in 2003, the school’s mission is to provide a Christ-centered education that nurtures the development of the whole person and prepares young men and women to meet successfully the challenges of our global society. The school offers a rigorous college preparatory program in a one-to-one laptop environment. Additionally, Bishop McLaughlin offers a vibrant student life, including an athletic program with varsity and junior varsity sports, extra-curricular activities such as Student Government, National Honor Society, Key Club, Peer Ministry, and Technology Club. The school’s state-of-the-art building includes an 866 seat Performing Arts Center which enhances the school’s growing performing arts program as well as a professional kitchen with a culinary trained chef who prepares daily meals for the students. For more information, contact the school’s admissions department at (727) 857-2600 or online at www.bmchs.com.

Senior Sports WWII Veteran

Walt Bockmiller started Sr. Sports with play in softball, golf, tennis, and bowling. One of the players was an 89 year-old gentleman who related, in his second year of play, that he was in the Normandy Beach invasion where the Germans were shooting straight down the cliffs from on high at the American soldiers in WWII. Wow, this was American history and sacrifice here! Everett “Buzz” Pierson, now of Land O’ Lakes, FL, was that player. Buzz grew up in Ohio in the early 1940’s, and at nineteen years of age decided to go into the Army. Buzz signed up for military action right after the Pearl Harbor attack (December 1941) to defend his country, and he entered his military service in January 1943. Buzz went to Camp Clebourne in Louisiana for boot camp training. In preparing to charge Normandy’s cliffs, Buzz went to Scotland, and they built barges for thirteen months to look like US Navy vessels to fool the Germans! Buzz and thousands of soldiers participated in the massive invasion led by Generals Dwight Eisenhower (Ike) and General Patton. The first, third and ninth armies invaded and took the beach from the Germans at a toll price of many troops. Thousands of American soldiers are buried all around the French invasion area in large cemeteries. Buzz and all the troops quickly learned that freedom isn’t free but paid for by the price of many brave citizens who stood up to the tyrant of terrorism, Adolph Hitler, and the German Army.

Next, Buzz and others built a massive fuel line from France into Germany to help fuel up and power the American fighting machine. When completed, Buzz guarded the German soldiers captured and imprisoned in France. The Americans guarded the Germans by day, and at night the Russian troops guarded the Germans. Every morning, Buzz found five or six Germans shot overnight, which led General Patton to say, “Boys, I think we are fighting the wrong country!” After the war, Buzz returned home to marry Opal, his wife, in 1947. He worked as a union painter for years, and they raised a family with four children: Greg, Brenda, Scott, and John. Greg died at six days old when he was dropped by a hospital employee. Over the many years of work, Buzz was a National Slo Pitch Softball Champion 20 times, mostly with Tremont Hotels teams out of Maryland, playing all over the US! His most recent championship was in the 80 and over division, played in Orlando, Florida, and he now hopes to get another in the 90 and Over Division nationally. Buzz was many times the MVP of the tournaments. He also has rolled several 300 bowling games! Buzz lost his 62 year-old daughter Brenda Lee Wurzelbacher in April of 2009, and then his wife Opal in October of 2009. Buzz also enjoys seeing his five grandchildren. We at Senior Sports are trying to get Buzz up to see the new World War II Memorial in Washington, DC to commemorate the awesome achievement given to all—our freedom to live, love, and enjoy our lives these many years. Buzz and those soldiers from his era are rightfully called the” Greatest Generation” as we all can attest to that! God Bless Buzz and the greatest generation for standing up for all our liberty. If you are interested in playing in our Senior Sports Activities, please call Walt Bockmiller at 813-527-8211.

Knights of Columbus Parade Knights of Columbus Assembly 2741 and Council 8104 are proud to announce their inaugural Memorial Day Parade. The parade will take place on May 26, 2014 beginning at 8:00am. The parade route will start at Dupree Lakes Boulevard off Collier Parkway and end just past the Baldomero Lopez Memorial Veterans Nursing Home on Parkway Boulevard. Knights of Columbus is a Catholic fraternal benefit society. It was founded by the Venerable Michael J. McGivney, assistant pastor at St. Mary’s Church of New Haven, Connecticut in 1882. Over the years, Catholic men have been drawn to the Knights of Columbus because of its emphasis on serv-

ing our church, families, and communities. Currently, there are 1.8 million members in more than 14,000 councils throughout the world. Knights of Columbus founding principles are Charity, Unity, Fraternity, and Patriotism. Knights of Columbus Assembly 2741 and Council 8104 hope the parade will become an annual tradition during which our community can honor the men and women who have died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. Anyone wishing to participate should contact Memorial Day Parade Co-Chairmen Bob Barbero by phone at (813) 995-2736 or Ed Aguila at (813) 995-0973.

Meeting the Needs of Seniors Anne Childers, Staff Writer Local developer Ray Rairigh felt led to pursue a “life improving” project based on his Christian belief that people must take care of one another. He spent 18 months researching the community and discovered an assisted living facility was needed in Land ‘O Lakes. Together with business partner Ron Roseman, Rairigh purchased property and broke ground for Connerton Court ALF on August 28, 2011. Construction was completed in August of 2012, and by October 2012, Connerton Court was licensed and available for residents. Ray Rairigh’s vision was about touching and impacting the lives of seniors, their families, and the staff members who take care of them.

In February 2013, Angel’s Care Health System, owned by James Eyer and Robert Bennett, began managing Connerton. The three-story ALF currently provides 100 beds and includes a secured memory care unit. Three lovely courtyards allow residents to enjoy Florida’s fresh air and sunshine in a safe environment. Studios, one and two bedroom apartments are available. Residents enjoy three delicious meals and snacks daily, weekly trips, special activities, and entertainment. Family and guests are always welcome. Visit www.Connertoncourtalf.com for additional information, or to schedule a tour call 813-996-9919.

An Act of Kindness—The Good Samaritan Jesus answered, “A certain man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who both stripped him and beat him, and departed, leaving him half dead. By chance a certain priest was going down that way. When he saw him, he passed by on the other side. In the same way a Levite also, when he came to the place, and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a certain Samaritan, as he travelled, came where he was. When he saw him, he was moved with compassion, came to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. He set him on his own animal, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. On the next day, when he departed, he took out two denarii, and gave them to the host, and said to him, ‘Take care of him. Whatever you spend beyond that, I will repay you when I return.’ Now which of these three do you think seemed to be a neighbor to him who fell among the robbers?” He said, “He who showed mercy on him.” Then Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.” —Luke 10:30–37, World English Bible

WINNERS!

Introducing the Caregiver Corner One of the biggest challenges of our time is also one of the least recognized: the caregiving of a loved one, be it a parent that has just gotten older and can’t get around much anymore, a spouse who is suffering from Alzheimer’s, or a family member that has just undergone an operation and has a long recovery process ahead of them. It’s not like it’s a secret. We complain to each other about the difficulties of incorporating this into our lives and balancing it all, but we each think we are special and that this is only something we personally are going through. Most of us have not connected

the dots and realized that this is major issue for all of us. • One in four of us are now involved with caregiving for a spouse, family member or friend • One in eight of us is a member of the Sandwich Generation, raising a child while also caring for an aging parent Alzheimer’s is estimated to affect 1 in 10 Americans aged 65 and older and nearly one in two aged 85 and older. The segment of the population aged 65 is set to double within the next 25 years, and the segment 85 and older is now the fastest growing in the US.

• We are living longer. This is often a good thing but it can also mean that some of us that may have died of other causes before some of the attacks of old age set in are now being beset by other diseases such as Alzheimer’s. • Living longer has also created new challenges for those in their forties and fifties— the Sandwich Generation, those still raising their own children and now challenged with balancing care for their parents as well. • Families relying on two incomes face significant strains when one of the breadwinners has an operation or injury and faces a prolonged recovery period, particularly if

the spouse’s job requires travel or long hours away from home • Likewise, single parent families face major challenges as well when the one breadwinner becomes sick or incapacitated. The Caregiver Corner is coordinated by Arthur Moseley. Arthur and his wife Frieda are the owners of the Tampa and Pasco offices of Griswold Home Care, one of the area’s leading providers of non-medical private pay home care services (the caregivers they refer provide companionship, homemaking services, and personal care).
