You probably know that on November 11th, Americans celebrate Veterans Day to honor the millions of the men and women who have served or are serving in the nation’s armed forces. But did you know the whole story behind the holiday?

For starters, you probably didn’t know it wasn’t called Veterans Day, but Armistice Day, to commemorate the truce signed by the allies in Germany in World War 1 on the 11th hour, the 11th day, of the 11th month 1918. The first Armistice Day was celebrated in the U.S. on November 11, 1919.

All businesses were suspended for 2 minutes starting at 11:00am, and parades and public gatherings were held to commemorate the occasion.

Later, Americans began honoring our unknown soldiers on Armistice Day, the tradition that continues today. At 11:00am every Veterans Day, a

color guard ceremony represents all branches of the military, and the tomb of the unknown soldiers in Arlington National Cemetery.

In 1954, President Eisenhower officially changed the name to Veterans Day following a national campaign to have the day honoring all veterans, not just those who served in World War 1, and did you know for seven years Veterans Day was actually celebrated in October?

In 1968 Congress moved Veterans Day to the fourth Monday in October so the government employees could enjoy a long weekend. But in 1975, President Gerald Ford returned Veterans Day to November 11 due to the historical significance, and that’s where it sits on a calendar today.

Actually, being fed up with your current situation can be a good place to be because that is when you are most likely to do something about it. I heard someone say, “You will never change what you tolerate.”

That is SO true because if you tolerate it or put up with it, then it will stay the same.

Day and Veterans Day? Both of them honor those men and women that served in the military, but Memorial Day honors America’s war dead, while Veterans Day honors all American veterans living and dead. The U.S. census bureau estimates 21 million veterans living in the United States.

For people who are hard of hearing, some of the more difficult places to hear when someone is talking are the acousticallychallenging environments of large indoor spaces like churches. One local church is helping their parishioners hear better.

St. Timothy Catholic Church in Lutz is the worship home to thousands of local residents, a number of whom have hearing impairment. Recently the church had two hearing loops installed—one in the day chapel and one in the main sanctuary—to help people who have telecoils (also known as T-coils) in their hearing aids to hear the spoken word much clearer as the sound comes directly into the hearing devices.

A hearing loop essentially consists of an antenna that is installed around the perimeter of the room and is connected to the sound system so that any amplified voices can ‘stream’ into hearing aids that have activated T-Coils.

St. Timothy is the only Catholic church in Hillsborough County with a hearing loop. A local audiologist, Dr. Judith Reese of JC Au-

diology in Lutz, said many of her patients use their hearing aids in the T-coil mode to hear better in venues like churches.

“Large buildings, especially churches, can be acoustically-challenging for people with normal hearing, but especially so for those who have hearing loss,” Dr. Reese says. “In many large venues, the amplified sound reverberates throughout the space, bouncing off metal, glass, and tile.”

Now at St. Timothy, when a person using hearing aids is inside a looped area (the main area of the sanctuary or the day chapel), amplified sound will be transmitted directly into their hearing aids. This allows them to hear clearly and better than ever, without the echoes and reverberation that occurs in normally amplified spaces.

“It is a wonderful way to accommodate people who might otherwise be at a disadvantage,” Fr. Kenneth Malley, pastor at St. Timothy, said about the hearing loop.

River Of Life Church Sets VBS Date “Vacation Bible School is always a fun time at River of Life Church,” exclaims Rev. Michael Perea, Children’s Pastor of the church which is located at 410 Chapman Road East in Lutz. “We keep the children busy with great fun activities throughout the morning!”

The children start their morning at the registration table, then proceed into the main sanctuary where they are greeted by some friendly faces and hugs. When inside, they immediately see cartoons playing on the screen such as Wile E. Coyote and the Roadrunner, Tom and Jerry, Yogi Bear and Boo Boo, Huckleberry Hound, and other familiar cartoons that the kids just love like they are brand new!

Then, Marshal Mike, Perea’s Children’s Ministry persona, starts the regular festivities with lessons, puppets, daily challenges, and a movie. This year’s feature is “The Treasure of Eagle Mountain” starring

Willie George and Kenneth Copeland. Forgiveness is the key issue in the movie and throughout the week.

The children will learn about different aspects of forgiveness through memory verses and games. During the games, craft time, and even snack time, the teachers will challenge the students about the lesson of the day. Perhaps the one item which the kids look forward to the most is the Wet Day! After the lesson on Friday, the children will have a snack and then go outside to experience and enjoy two age-appropriate water slides!

VBS at River of Life is open to children aged 4 through 12 years old. Registration starts at 8:30am every morning from July 7 through July 11. Classes start at 9am and parents retrieve their children promptly at noon. The classes are FREE to all children.

Shrink Wrap Your Golf Swing

Rick Bradshaw PGA Professional/GM I recently saw a re-run of Death Wish V starring Charles Bronson. There was a scene near the end of the movie where Bronson hangs a bad guy on a hook in a dry cleaner store and spins the guy around, wrapping him up in clear plastic.

I immediately thought of the golf swing.

First, the spinning motion reminded me of the pivot, and then the wrapping of plastic made me think of control of the arms and containment of energy.

I often teach the golf swing gradually by starting with a chipping and pitching motion.

I like to keep my students’ arms close to their bodies for the feeling of limited arm and wrist movement. The chipping and pitching motion is sometimes referred to as the swing in miniature. I could have used that shrink wrapping machine in the movie in some of my lessons to keep the arms out of a chipping stroke.

Once I teach my students the feel of keeping the hands forward with the arms close to the body when chipping, I ask them to increase the size of the motion to waist high. Imagine in your mind a figure skater performing pirouette.

One of the most common phrases I use when teaching is “arms together and rotate.” Keeping the arms together is best described as drawing your biceps together in front of you while gripping the golf club in front of you and stretching your arms down to the ball at address.

This drawing together of the arms encourages your body to initiate the swing through a pivot versus an independent arm takeaway. This shrink wrapping of your arms and body will help keep your golf swing connected and controlled as if you are turning in a barrel as you swing.

Please remember, this is only a visual analogy as the arms do have to swing reactively to the pivoting of your body, but do not lift them away in an effort to help them lift the club on the back swing or hit independently at the golf ball on the through swing.

To get the feel of this analogy for a full swing, place a towel under both arms as you swing. This is a great drill to shrink wrap your golf swing so you’ll have control, accuracy, and power in your golf shots.

Captain Ric’s Fish Tales Reel Simple Fishing Adventures

There was a situation this past week that reminded me of an old saying that I’ve heard throughout the years. “If you’re early, you’re on time, if you’re on time, you’re late, and if you’re late, you’re left.”

We sat at the dock for almost 30 minutes waiting on the second half of the fishing crew to show up when the client said to crank it up. Since the guy paying was in the boat, the key got turned. It turned out to be a mistake to have not made the whistle because we had a fantastic day on the water with one of the greatest chess games with a snook I have ever witnessed.

It was not a monster snook, we measured her at 36 inches, but one that was big enough to dictate the fight. We were fishing a pass and got hit as we drifted baits with the current. This big girl hit it at the end of the pass and decided to turn the corner and blast down the shoreline.

Luckily, I’ve seen this before and fell back on the memory of past mistakes. I told the client to open the bail and take the pressure off the fish as I got the power pole up and the trolling motor on full speed in the direction of the battle.

When we got past the “crime scene” and in a position to put tension on the line, we noticed that the fish had strolled out into the open water and didn’t even realize she was hooked anymore. That changed quickly as we tightened the line. We were now in a better position to play the game, so we didn’t care if the water erupted.

The fish put up a good fight, barreling back to the mangroves, but after a couple close calls we got the fish landed for a quick picture and a safe release. That was a fun day with a friend that will be in my memory forever.

Flats fishing in general has been good but has slowed down a little with the temperatures getting warmer. We still have not had our bait move onto the grass flats like normal this time of year.

Some flats have white bait on them but not all of them. I haven’t done much deep water fishing but have gotten reports that it has been pretty good. I have a few kingfish and tarpon trips in the next few weeks, so my attention will turn to that direction for a bit.

I had one question sent in this past month.

Arnold T. asked, “What is your pet peeve as a fisherman?” There are a couple, but the one that stands out is when the boat is on the trailer. I hate it when in traffic, the vehicle behind me has to get inches away from my motor. I need that motor to work and cannot afford to have an accidental screw up take me off the water. Very frustrating.

Congratulations, Derrick Brooks, for becoming the third Tampa Bay Buccaneer to get inducted into the prestigious football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. Brooks joins other Buccaneers Lee Roy Selmon and his teammate Warren Sapp. All have their bronze bust displayed prominently in the Hall for eternity. Brooks will also join Selmon and Sapp in the exclusive Tampa Bay Buccaneer Ring of Honor. The other members in the ring include coach John McKay, Jimmy Giles, and Paul Gruber.

Brooks will be honored and his name in permanent neon lights will be unveiled at a home game at RJS this fall. Brooks lives in Tampa and is active in the community.

June is the lull before the storm when it comes to Tampa Bay Buccaneer football.

One Buccaneer Place becomes a sleepy place since all the players and football staff go home, instructed not to come back until July when training camp officially begins.

As usual, there is great anticipation and expectation this time of year. There are over 90 players on the roster. Who will make the final cut and who will be asked for their playbook back? Some players will land with other teams to continue to practice their football craft, and many will become

civilians with their dream of becoming an NFL player cut short. What players will give the best chance of winning? That’s a mammoth challenge of the coaching staff and general manager.

The Buccaneers were active in free agency and the draft. The jury is still out as to the results of the recruiting class of 2014. I’ve said it before, you really need a roster sheet to tell who’s who with all the new faces including the general manager, head coach, and assistant coaches. There is a brand new scheme and outlook this year.

We will all have to take a second look as the uniforms and logo have been changed and updated. A new brand of Tampa Bay Buccaneers football has arrived.

The key will be if the newly-assembled team and coaching staff can put together a competitive product and win football games. The ownership, fans, and players are restless, and an extended season and return to the playoffs is the order of the day.

The bullseye has to be on the scoreboard with the seconds coming to an end with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers victorious.

It has been well over a decade since the Bucs last fought their way to the playoffs.

Will this be the year that the team returns to form? Football purists insist that the success of the season ahead lies in training camp as the team installs their offensive and defensive scheme. I’m wondering which players will stand out, make the squad, and make an immediate positive impact on the team. Football and tailgate season are right around the corner. Are you ready?

The Little Women of Lutz spent Sunday afternoon on April 13th preparing a dinner for the residents and staff of the Ronald McDonald house located on Davis Island adjacent to downtown Tampa.

The young ladies cooked up a menu of honey cured ham, sweet potato casserole, green beans with ham hock, biscuits, and strawberry shortcake. Cooking a dinner at the Ronald McDonald House has been

a long-standing springtime event for the Little Women.

Several years ago, one of their advisors was a resident at an out-of-town Ronald McDonald house when her son needed long-term treatment, so the young ladies were given an up close and personal view of just how important and appreciated a home-cooked meal served far away from home can be.

The Little Women also delivered thousands of pull top can tabs to the Ronald McDonald house as a contribution towards one of their many fundraising projects. The Little Women of Lutz are a service club open to young ladies ages 12-18. The Little Women are mentored and sponsored by the GFWC Lutz-Land O’ Lakes Woman’s Club.

Access the Grace of God Through Faith Ah, yes! The wonderful summer season is now upon us. Last month, we celebrated Mother’s Day, honoring our own mothers, whether living on earth or in heaven. As parents, we fathers celebrated our wives, honoring them as the mothers of our children. This is the month we fathers honor our own fathers and also receive appreciation from our wives and children.

It is easy to honor parents who honor God and His word. The best example and heritage that we can leave our children is to be men and women who rightly divide the word of truth (2 Tim. 2:15) and also live by that word every day.

The apostle Paul instructed children to “Honor your father and mother... that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth” (Eph. 6:2, 3). He goes on to instruct the fathers in verse 4, saying, “And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord.” I firmly believe that Paul is saying to fathers “Don’t be religiously legalistic. You may turn your children away from walking with the Lord.”

It is very important to understand the balance between the law and grace. Paul clearly taught that we should live righteous and holy lives. But the question is, can this sanctified life be achieved by observing the law through sheer willpower, which would be a work of the flesh? Or do we achieve a sanctified life by accessing the grace of God through faith, which would be a fruit of the spirit? Paul weighs in on this topic in Gal. 2:21, saying, “I do not frustrate the grace of God; for if righteousness comes through the law, then Christ died in vain.” He asks

in Gal. 3:3, “Are you so foolish? Having begun in the Spirit, are you being made perfect by the flesh?”

The law of Moses contained both the oracles of God and the ordinances of the law. The oracles of God are the Ten Commandments, unchangeable laws of right and wrong. The law also contained 603 ordinances strictly for the Jewish nation. Jesus is the only person who ever kept all of the law. In doing so, He fulfilled the law – and then He abolished the ordinances. Eph. 2:15 says, “having abolished in His flesh the enmity, that is, the law... contained in ordinances.” The Greek word for “abolished” means to render null and void, as though it never existed.

Now, as New Testament Christians, we can show our children how to access the power of God that is in His grace, to walk free from sin. Rom. 5:1, 2 says, “Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in the hope of the glory of God.” And Rom. 6:14 says, “For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace.” Grace is not a license to sin; it is the power of God that, when accessed, empowers us to not sin.

Fathers and mothers, let’s bless our children with a heritage of knowing how to walk in the power of the Spirit and not in the weakness of the flesh. Rather than a list of “thou shalt not’s,” let’s show them how – at any point where their own conscience is stirred – they can choose Jesus, choose love, and choose life instead of choosing sin.
