Valentine’s Day—One of America’s Most Popular Days
There’s no doubt that Valentine’s Day is one of America’s most popular days. More than 62% of Americans celebrate by sending greeting cards, flowers, candy, jewelry, or by enjoying a romantic dinner. But the origin of Valentine’s Day is surprising. For example, the roots behind Valentine’s Day go all the way back to an ancient Roman fraternity fest held in mid-February called Lupercalia. Later, the Christian church chose midFebruary for Saint Valentine’s Day in order to Christianize the celebration, but who was St. Valentine? Not much was known about the holiday’s namesake. First of all, there was more than one such Christian priest. One thought it was unjust and defied the Emperor and continued to marry young lovers in secret. Emperor Claudius II banned marriage for young

Samantha Taylor Pure Health Studios That may seem like an odd statement, however, I think that is the art that so many people have lost, especially women. Since my personal training studio has helped over 3,000 women lose weight, I tend to hear the same things over and over again: “I am so tired that I don’t even have the energy to play with my kids at night, let alone really spend time with my husband,” or “I can’t imagine what I could actually accomplish if I wasn’t always thinking about my weight or what I am going to wear,”

How can you love your neighbor as yourself if you don’t even love YOU? your health and mental well-being. It’s called responsibility for your body. Guess what? The body you have right now is the only body you get until the day you die, so why not start loving it and taking care of it NOW? If you don’t, your body will quickly start to fall apart and you will wonder “how did I get here?” I am being direct because sometimes that is what we need to break through all of our excuses of why we aren’t doing something entine ’s Day, do something nice for yourself like get a massage, take a hot bath, or get a facial. 50 Years of Mentoring Children This January, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay will kick off its 50th anniversary by celebrating National Mentoring Month. This is a time to reflect on the tremendous impact mentors have had on the lives of our community’s youth over the last fifty years. Throughout the year, our agency will host a variety of community events to recognize our mentors and reconnect with former Bigs, Littles, staff, and board members. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay is part of a national network that got its start more than 100 years ago when a young New York City court clerk named Ernest Coulter noticed more and more boys coming through his courtroom. He recognized that caring adults could help many of these kids stay out of trouble, and he set out to find volunteers to fulfill his vision. This marked the beginning of the national mentoring organization, Big Brothers Big Sisters of America. Locally, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay was established in 1964 as two separate organizations: Big Brothers of Hillsborough County and Big Sisters of Tampa. Fifty years later, our agency has stayed true to our founders’ vision. And today, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay serves nearly 2,000 kids per year in Hillsborough, Pasco, and Polk counties. Anwar Richardson, a former Little Brother matched in Tampa Bay, said as a child, he was tough and rebellious. Richardson said he often resisted advice from his former Big Brother, Derrick Jackson, a sports writer and now an award-winning columnist for the Boston Globe. Richardson acknowledges how much he admired and looked up to Jackson. In fact, thirty years later, Richardson is a successful sports writer for Yahoo! NFL. Youth served by Big Brothers Big Sisters are primarily children who, like Richardson, are in single-parent headed families. Many live in poverty or have a parent who is incarcerated. Increasingly, more of the
children Big Brothers Big Sisters serve have parents in the armed services. When we say children paired with a mentor will do better in school, it’s not just a tag line. We have measurable outcomes to prove it. Longstanding independent research and Big Brothers Big Sisters Youth Outcomes Survey™ (YOS) data find children enrolled in the program improve in school, their behavior, and in social-emotional areas. For example, 96 percent of Littles in the community-based mentoring program were promoted to the next grade level, 93 percent showed an increase in self-confidence, and 98 percent of our Littles had no involvement in the juvenile justice system. We’re also encouraging former Bigs and Littles to share their stories with our agency. Media, if you’d like to set up an interview with an alum Big or Little, please contact Emily Lee at 813.769.3621 or emily. lee@bbbsfl.org. About Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay, Inc. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay is part of the nation’s largest donor and volunteer-supported mentoring network and holds itself accountable for children in its program to achieve measurable outcomes, such as educational success, avoidance of risky behaviors, higher aspirations, greater confidence, and better relationships. Partnering with parents/guardians, schools, corporations, and others in the community, Big Brothers Big Sisters carefully pairs youth, or Littles, with screened volunteer mentors, or Bigs, and monitors these one-to-one mentoring matches throughout its life. Big Brothers Big Sisters provides children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported one-to-one mentoring relationships that change their lives for the better, forever. In 2013, our agency provided mentors for more than 1,700 children in Hillsborough, Pasco, and Polk counties. Visit www.bbbsfl.org for more information.

Welcome Back, Coach Lovie Article and photo by Jeffrey Neil Fox
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers hired Lovie Smith as the new head coach. Smith was the former head coach of the Chicago Bears, and he replaced ousted Buccaneer head coach Greg Schiano. Smith was an assistant coach with the Buccaneers when Tony Dungy was at the helm. The Buccaneers, who entered the 2013 season with high expectations, stumbled to an 0-8 start before finishing 4-12. The fans of the Pewter Pirates are restless and want their team to return to the playoffs and be a formidable contender to bring home another Super Bowl trophy. Football purists thought that the Buccaneers team had the right personnel roster and the formula for success last season with high profile offseason acquisitions of talented players. Former head coach Greg Schiano was embroiled with controversy over the benching and then releasing of the team’s seasoned field general, quarterback Josh Freeman. The Buccaneers owners are excited about the hiring of Lovie Smith and believe that he will bring balance to the team and turn
the team into a winner right out of the gate. Smith is familiar with the organization, and he is a disciplined and popular coach. The team has accumulated a good deal of talent, and it’s time for the team to move ahead to the future. Smith is well-respected in the NFL and has a track record of orchestrating one of the top defensive teams in the NFL. He did win an NFC championship when he was with the Bears. There is no doubt that Tampa’s defense will be strong next year. They have Pro Bowlers in defensive tackle Gerald McCoy and defensive back Darrell Revis returning to head up the defense. There are some question marks on the offensive side. The jury is out about the team’s quarterback, Mike Glennon, who just finished his rookie season after replacing Josh Freeman. It doesn’t appear that the team will be overly active in free agent acquisitions, and they are positioned well in the upcoming draft. There are many new faces at One Buccaneer Place, starting with the head coach, general manager, and all the assistant coaches that have been hired. I’m excited about the prospects of success and to see every seat filled up, no blackouts, and the team returning to competitive form. It has been 11 years since the Buccaneers won their inaugural Super Bowl. I’m sure they will make room for another silver Vince Lombardi trophy if the team is fortunate enough to fight their way through the playoffs and represent the NFC and win at the big show. Prior to each concert series, audience members are able to meet the guest soloists and learn about the music. On Thursday, February 13, at 6pm, Sforzini will present a Symphonic Chat at Opera Central, 2145 First Ave. S, St. Petersburg, about the winter series of concerts. He will introduce Robert Smith, principal trumpet in the Florida Orchestra, who will demonstrate portions of the Alexander Arutiunian Trumpet Concerto, which he will later perform with the orchestra in concerts in Tampa, St. Petersburg, and Clearwater on February 16, 18, and 23. Maestro Sforzini will also talk about the Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 6 “Pathetique,” and musicians of the Tampa Bay Symphony will play excerpts.
