Memorial Day

It’s the three-day weekend that officially kicks off summer vacations… a time for hanging out at the beach, barbecuing, even catching a few laps at the Indy 500. But Memorial Day is also the most solemn American holiday--a day to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice, while defending their nation. In the Civil War, America’s bloodiest chapter, over 600,000 soldiers were killed in action. Almost every community in every state suffered the loss of young men. As the war came to an end, mourners in both northern and southern states began placing flags and flowers on the graves of fallen soldiers. The town of Waterloo, New York is officially credited with starting the holiday. On May 5, 1866, its citizens closed their shops and businesses so that everyone

My Body Is Turning Into A Giant Marshmallow!

Samantha Taylor Pure Health & Fitness Studios April is a good time to reflect on life. I went out to dinner with my dad, who is one of the most amazing people I know. Every time I talk to him, he talks about how he is going to start working out, get serious about his exercise plan, and “really do it this time” (probably mentions it since he knows I’m a personal trainer). He has been saying he is going to get fit for many years and it really hit me when I realized on July 6th he turns 67. My dad, 67. Isn’t that bizarre when your parents start to get older? That is only three years away from 70! That is what hit me, he’s getting older and he is not doing anything about his fitness. His blood work is better than it has ever been, which I am very happy about that, yet I am seeing him get “softer” and more out of shape even though thankfully he only has about 20 lbs. to lose. I always saw my dad as Superman, and I still do. He was in the Vietnam War, always did physical labor tasks outside, and owned his own businesses. And I always saw him with muscles, in good shape, and active, which probably helped me with my choice to be a trainer. But for a moment, I looked at my dad without those Superman goggles on and realized that he is getting older, more out of shape and if he doesn’t do something instead of talk about it, he is going to pay for it big time! I put on my personal trainer hat and expressed my concern for him. I told him how if he didn’t get serious about this, he was only going to get mushier and become like a big marshmallow! (I knew could raz him a little

bit because my dad has always been a big jokester). He said, “No, not a marshmallow!” I said, “Yes, and if you don’t want me to start calling you Mr. Marshmallow Man, then you had better do something! And if your body turns into mush because you have no more muscles from not exercising, you are going to start losing your independence as you get older.” He exclaimed, “No, not that!” I said, “Yes, do you want to be in a nursing home in 10 years? People changing your diapers?” He was aghast, “NO! I never want to lose my independence!” I said, “Well then, you better get serious because the life that you are living right now with not being fit, your body is not going to be able to support itself as it gets older and you will not have your independence, you will have to have other people taking care of you. Is that what you want?” I knew it was NOT wanted because he is a very independent man, and his mother is 92 and still lives on her own. He got a more serious look on his face, “No, that is not what I want. Okay, I am serious. Wait ‘till you see me next time!” I said, “Dad, you said that last time, you need a plan, not just talk.” He said, “No, I am really going to do something this time.” So we put a plan together for him. I challenged him to workout at least 2 times a week for a month and then when he did, he got to buy himself a reward. He decided what his reward was, we shook hands on it and went off on our separate ways. I love him so much and am grateful for him and I don’t want to start seeing his body fall apart because he didn’t take care of it. Captain Ric’s Fish Tales Reel Simple Fishing Adventures

With the best part of our Tampa Bay tarpon fishing right around the corner, I wanted to re-post a report I did several years ago. Tarpon are a great sport fish, but the trip in the story below was much more. The story speaks for itself. I hope you enjoy it for a second time. I had the opportunity this past week to meet and take a true American hero fishing. My longtime friend from Killeen, Texas, Chuck Guthrie, called me several weeks ago and told me he was going to be in town and wanted to book a trip. After talking for several minutes, I found out that Chuck intended to bring a friend of his that is an injured veteran from the war in Iraq. That’s where the hero part starts to play in. I told Chuck that I would do this trip on the house and was honored to be the one that he had chosen for the job. All they wanted to catch was a tarpon and did not care how long it took to do it. I immediately called my tarpon fishing mentor, Capt. Jason Ramsey, and asked him if he wanted to be part of something good. Jason agreed to join me, and the boys from Texas started making plans. Chuck’s friend and American hero, Brent Homan,

took a blast in Iraq from an IED that left him without a right eye, an arm with nothing but a metal rod from the wrist to the elbow and 2 BB sized pieces of shrapnel in his brain for life. After 16 surgeries and 45 days in the hospital, Brent is on the mend. He can’t and never could hit a baseball 400 feet, he can’t run through tackles, he can’t sing and dance, but what he did do is defend our freedoms, and to me that’s a true hero. I don’t think that a soldier has to get injured to be a hero, they’re all heroes to me, it’s just that an injured soldier makes an extra sacrifice. For Brent, his right eye was one of those sacrifices. This is where the story gets a little interesting. In the first ten minutes of fishing, Brent got hooked up with a tarpon, pulled him away from the pilings, and got him to the boat for a release when everyone on the boat seemed to notice at the same time that his fish has no right eye. Call it coincidence if you want, but I think it goes deeper than that. We went on to jump five more tarpon and were able to land three of the six we had on that day. Brent’s one-eyed fish was one of the smallest ones that we hooked, but I think it will be his most memorable one regardless of the size. It was a great day shared with my friends Jason and Chuck and also with my new friend and hero, Brent. Jason and I both felt blessed that we were able to give back to someone that has given as much to us as Brent has. If you’re a veteran, thank you. Until next time, good luck and be safe on the water. Local Author Celebrates the Nature Coast Christian fiction author Rebecca Waters brings her main characters to Florida’s Nature Coast. They enjoy a Cuban breakfast in Lutz and lunch in Land O’ Lakes. Questions About Thermography? By Maria E. Belluccio, D.O.M., A. P., R.N.

I always find it interesting when I ask a woman if she would be interested in learning about a safe and early detection breast screening tool. When I educate them on the benefits of infrared thermal imaging, I frequently get the response that they have “never heard of it” or “why isn’t my doctor ordering it?” Medical thermography has been used worldwide for breast and whole body screening for over 30 years. The FDA registered thermography as an adjunctive breast screening tool in 1982. Still, there remains some misunderstanding about its relevance in breast screening. Mammography has been considered the gold standard for years, yet recent information continues to reveal questions regarding its efficacy and safety. So what do we do to insure early detection of breast disease and protect ourselves from the effects of ionizing radiation and compression? To answer that question, let’s look at how thermography works. Thermography actually takes a digital picture through a temperature sensing camera that can show vascular patterns and temperature gradients (trends) in the breast tissue. Vascular patterns are generally symmetrical in our body, so any abnormal pattern can be detected through an increased heat pattern (hyperthermia). Also, there are a number of vascular patterns that alert the thermologist (reader) of the potential for abnormal vascular growth called angiogenesis. A thermogram can pick up on changes in the breast anywhere from 5-8 years before a mammogram sees it as a measurable mass. By that time there may be lymph node involvement and the woman would require aggressive therapy such as surgery, chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy. We haven’t even mentioned the emotional, physical, and financial stress that women suffer through this process. Why wait to find a palpable mass? I use thermography in my practice to educate women about breast health and ways to prevent breast cancer. We know that breast

cancer is primarily caused by estrogen dominance and environmental toxins. Family history only accounts for 5-10%. There are so many steps we can take to prevent and treat early signs of changes in our breast. I recommend that women in their 20’s start annual thermography screening to monitor any changes we can see over time that would indicate the need for intervention. Thermography is a proactive approach to preventing breast disease. It can be an indication of hormone imbalances, lymphatic congestion, and inflammation. Women with fibrocystic breasts have a better chance of accurate screening with annual thermograms. Mammography oftentimes cannot detect lesions when a woman has dense or cystic breasts. She might be recalled several times for repeat x-rays due to its obscurity. Also, women with breast implants are reluctant to have annual screening due to their fear of rupturing the implants. Hence, they receive no screening. Unfortunately, there is not a 100% accurate method for detection. Thermography has a 92-95% sensitivity rate and when combined with breast ultrasound, the sensitivity increases to 97%. In addition to breast screening, thermography can visualize pain and inflammation elsewhere in the body. It can see skin lesions, cardiovascular/carotid artery diseases, thyroid abnormalities, dental issues, digestive disorders and many other disorders reflective in changes in skin temperature asymmetries and vascular patterns. National Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month During the entire month of May, motorcyclists across the United States will be promoting National Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month. Below are some simple, easy awareness tips that we would like to share. Don’t Just Glance – Take a Second Look! Motorcycle Awareness: Over two-thirds of car/motorcycle-related crashes are caused by car drivers; not by motorcyclists. The driver usually does not see the oncoming motorcyclist in time to avoid a crash. With people texting and checking their cell phones for messages, it’s important to stress that both hands need to be on the wheel of your vehicle. Tips for Drivers: Why Didn’t I See That Motorcycle? How Can I Become More Aware of Motorcyclists? Motorcycles normally have smaller profiles that make them harder to see. You may also find it more difficult to estimate the motorcycle’s speed. Look for the motorcyclist at intersections, when a motorcyclist may be making a left turn, and on the highway when

a motorcyclist may be changing lanes. The motorcyclist’s riding pattern is different from your driving pattern. Different actions may be needed for the same driving or highway situation. Always anticipate a motorcyclist’s maneuver. Traffic, weather, and road conditions— especially obstructions—require a motorcyclist to react differently than a driver. Please keep in mind never to follow a motorcycle too closely. Respect the motorcyclist and the space they are using while on the highway. Hundreds of motorcyclists in our state of Florida alone die each year as a result of an unnecessary motorcycle accident. The state of Florida is the number one state in the nation with the highest amount of motorcycle deaths out of any other state. California is next, followed by Texas. Whether it was growing up in a distressed family or living in a third-world country or being moved from their childhood home to serve at Hope, they each had adversity to overcome, and they succeeded. They have gained knowledge and wisdom much like Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. But the most important similarity our three graduates have with the three Hebrew boys is they know the Savior. Education is important. It will help put food on the table and pay the bills. But knowing the Savior is the master key that will enable them to unlock peaceful, rewarding, productive lives and make a difference in the lives of those around them.

One of the most intriguing Bible stories is that of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. They were three Hebrew boys taken into captivity by the Babylonians. These boys were just like other Hebrew children except “God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom.” (Daniel 1:17) They were educated, and they stood out to King Nebuchadnezzar to be placed in positions of leadership in his country, positions to make a difference in others’ lives. Just like those three boys were similar to other Hebrew children, our graduates are no different than graduates in any school in our country, public or private. As they walk across the stage on Friday, June 6th, they will receive something that will set them apart from many of their peers and even family members—they will receive their high school diploma. could decorate the graves of the men killed during the war. Then an old war general had an idea. John A. Logan, leader of the Union Veteran Association, spearheaded an effort to unite all the decoration services into one national holiday, designating May 30th as Decoration Day. On the first national Decoration Day in 1868, 5,000 war widows, orphans, and other mourners gathered at Arlington National Cemetery. They placed flowers and ribbons on the 20,000 graves of both Union and Confederate soldiers. Two future Presidents and fellow Union veterans, Ulysses S. Grant and James A. Garfield, attended the ceremony.

Throughout the 19th century, Decoration Day grew. Ceremonies were held in major Civil War battlefields like Gettysburg, Pennsylvania and Antietam field in Maryland. By the end of the century, the holiday was renamed Memorial Day. But war wounds ran deep; most southern states refused to commemorate a holiday

they regarded as honoring Union soldiers. So each state commemorated their war dead with different Confederate Decoration Days. Several southern states continue the tradition to this day. WWI ushered in the age of modern warfare. America lost over 130,000 soldiers in the global conflict. This shared experience finally bonded America’s north and south. When the war ended, May 30th became a day to honor all American soldiers who died in battle as far back as the Revolutionary War. America interred its first Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery on Armistice Day in 1921. Every Memorial Day, this soldier and other unknown soldiers are honored with a wreath-laying ceremony conducted by the President or Vice President. They are reminders of all those who’ve never made it home. Memorial Day became a federal holiday in 1971, when Congress shifted it from May 30th to the fourth Monday in May, giving federal workers a three-day weekend. Sports Illustrated Recognizes Heritage Isles

Rick Bradshaw PGA Professional/GM & Food Enthusiast I am very proud to have been mentioned in the Masters Preview Golf Edition of Sports Illustrated Magazine’s article on my partner Jim Dent, a 12-time winner on the PGA Champions Tour. The article was titled Everyone Loves Dent and was written by the illustrious sports writer Michael Bamberger. Mr. Bamberger is one of the country’s most elegant writers on golf. His versatility as a writer and his lucid, open style are hallmarks of his work. Bamberger joined Sports Illustrated as a senior writer in 1995 after 13 years as a newspaper reporter. The week preceding this year’s Masters, Mr. Bamberger visited The Jim Dent/Rick Bradshaw School of Golf at Heritage Isles Golf and Country Club in New Tampa. Michael immediately was drawn to our Golf School’s library of instruction books which is available for students and instructors to refer to during their lesson. Michael’s article described his visit as “Dent and I drove from his home to a public course outside Tampa called Heritage Isles, where he owns a golf school with a teaching pro named Rick Bradshaw. His business partner likes a round, stress-free swing, and Jim Dent is his Exhibit A. Bradshaw has a collection of worn-out, marked-up and taped instruction books—by Hogan, Percy Boomer, Jimmy Ballard, Homer Kelley, and others—and during our visit, Dent studied closely various pictures. He is still a student of the game and loves referring to Ben Hogan’s perfect golf swing.”

These books, plus hundreds more in my weather-beaten library, are what substantiate the history of golf instruction and add to my knowledge of what works and why from the beginning of golf in the late 1800’s to present modern day instruction. It is firmly my belief to be extremely well read and knowledgeable of virtually all past and present golf instruction if you are to attempt to instruct individuals to swing a golf club. Michael Bamberger allowed me to video his golf swing, and then we analyzed it together. He is a very good golfer and I soon learned he had immense knowledge of golf instruction. We looked at a very old video of Ben Hogan practicing and hitting drives into the ocean from the backyard of a house next to Seminole Golf Club in Juno Beach, Florida. Seminole, still extremely exclusive, is now ranked #22 in the world, and back then when they shot the Hogan video, it was ranked in the world’s top 10 golf courses. Michael was the only person I have ever shown the exclusive Hogan video to that already knew it existed. He spent about an hour with Jim Dent and me talking about golf instruction and hitting golf balls. In addition, he seemed very impressed with my 280 yard one hand drives to exemplify how effortless the golf swing should be. I thank Michael Bamberger for visiting and writing such a wonderful article about the man and golfer Jim Dent in the Masters Preview of Sports Illustrated Magazine as well as mentioning myself and our golf school. What Does The Fox Say?

It’s just a few short months ‘till the start of the regular NFL season. I know that I along with all the other fans of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers am looking forward to this coming season with great anticipation and expectations. Many changes have been made here on the home front. New coach, revised logo/ uniform change, many off-season free agent and trade acquisitions to name a few. All the draft picks are rookies and the competition and preparation is different in the NFL from how they were coached and groomed during their collegiate career. I do know that you will need a roster at training camp to become familiar with all the new players and numbers that will be on the team. I’m wondering what players will emerge when it comes to making the final roster right before the season starts. Speculation will grow rampant as training camp begins and all the players fight to make their spot on the roster. There are no position guarantees. I am curious who will end up being the starting quarterback once the season unfolds. The quarterback is the field general and has to be the most important player on the offense since he touches the ball every play.

There is a new cast of players/coaches and it does take time and repetition to play as a team and be competitive. There is a clean slate at One Buccaneer Place for the most part. The new general manager and coach have made many changes, and I’m sure more adjustments are sure to take place. Every decision is based to give the team the best chances of winning. I do know that winning solves all ills. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have been long overdue for an extended season and a trip to the playoffs. Will this be the season that our Pewter Pirates fight their way to the NFC South division title or wild card berth to the playoffs? I certainly hope so. Memories of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ inaugural Super Bowl season are still vivid in my mind. I’d like to see the Buccaneers make room for another coveted silver Vince Lombardi Super Bowl trophy at One Buccaneer Place headquarters. Tampa has been become the apex of sports in Florida. We are lucky to have the Buccaneers, Rays, Lightning, and the USF Bulls representing the fans of Tampa Bay and playing here in Tampa. I do think that Tampa has some of the best fans in the country. We are fortunate to have so many teams to follow at the stadium arenas and on television for both home and away games. Having all these great sports teams and venues adds to the quality of your life. The NFL and NCAA football season soon return as well as the popular activity of tailgating. What does the Fox say? You have to root and hoot for the hometown teams. Just When Things Were Looking Better

Have you ever been through a season of severe difficulty and trouble? You thought the crisis was over and things were turning around for the better only to find out the greatest challenge was still in front of you. We have all experienced those kinds of seasons in our lives and maybe that is where you find yourself right now. So, what do you do? In the Bible, the Book of Acts records the story of the Apostle Paul, who lived through two years of hardship being falsely accused and imprisoned. He was now being transported as a prisoner aboard a ship headed for Rome to stand trial before Caesar. During this voyage, the ship was caught up in a severe storm with hurricane force winds, causing extensive damage to the ship and loss of the cargo. The lives of all 276 people aboard were in jeopardy. The ship was being carried along by the storm and after nearly two weeks, those on board had lost all hope of being rescued. But, that night, Paul had an angelic visitor who told him that his prayers were heard and he and all aboard would live, and even though the ship would be wrecked, all would make it safely to land. The very next day, the word Paul had received came to pass. The crew discovered an island. They hoisted the sail and made for the land, but the ship ran aground and was broken to pieces by the waves. Miraculously, everyone on board made it safely to the island. Surely, the worst was over. God came through in just the nick of time and

delivered Paul just as he promised. Now, safely on land, they received a warm welcome by the people on the island. It was rainy and cold, so a fire was built to warm these brave survivors. It looked like the worst was over for Paul. Those who accompanied him were thankful for his faith and praised God for their deliverance from the sea. Just as they were warming themselves around the fire, Paul decided to help by adding some more wood, but as he threw the sticks on the flames, a venomous snake came from that wood and bit Paul, attaching itself to his hand by its deadly fangs. The residents of the island recognized the kind of snake and determined that Paul would surely die. At that point, Paul, could have just given up and died. He could have just chalked it up to one of those mysterious unknowns that so many blame God for, or he could stand on the word the Lord had given him before he ever got on that ship. You see, God had already shown Paul he would testify before Caesar regarding his faith in Christ. What did Paul do? He shook the serpent off his hand into the fire and felt no harm from the snakebite. We have all been bitten by tragic events that could poison our lives, but just as Paul did, we need to shake off the work of the serpent and keep serving God. Don’t let the poison trouble brings poison you. Because Paul persevered, many on the island heard the gospel and experienced the power of God. Paul went on to Rome and before his acquittal, he wrote many of the New Testament books. What things would you leave undone if you quit now?
