HOW YOU CAN HELP
H
ope Children’s Home has been “Rescuing the Next Generation” for over 45 years. Those children that are abandoned, abused, neglected, and orphaned have found a a place of security, safety, love, and daily care. This is only possible by the blessings of God and from the many in our community who support us. We do not receive any government assistance or funding. Our support comes from churches, businesses, organizations, and individuals just like you. One could probably imagine that caring for 70 children from infant to high school that we would have many needs, and you are right! Let me list a few of our urgent needs at this moment: paper products (paper towels, paper plates, cups 8-10 oz.), shampoo, conditioner, travel-sized toothpaste, and pull-ups (sizes 4T5T). Our “needs list” can be found on our website for other needed items. Now that you know we are 100% privately funded and have a partial list of some of our pressing needs, maybe you are asking, “How can I help?”
First of all, you can donate by going to our website, where you will find many opportunities of giving, or you may wish to bring your donation righ tto our campus. We also need items such as gently used clothing, appliances, furniture, etc. We are located at 11415 Hope International Dr., Tampa, FL 33625. Our hours of receiving donations are Monday-Saturday 9:00am-4:30pm. Do you have a larger item you can’t fit in your vehicle? Call us at 813.961.1214 to schedule a pickup! Let me thank each of you who already donate as well as those who will be donating for the first time. By opening your heart for the children, you are helping us to “Rescue the Next Generation.”

October 1st marks the first day of the 4th Annual Books for Troops (BFT) Book Drive. BFT is seeking additional hosts for the donation bins in Lutz, Wesley Chapel, Land O’ Lakes, and New Tampa. “Although our primary goal for the book drive is the collection of books for deployed troops, we find that every year we continue to lack funds to get all the books shipped. Therefore, this year we are asking hosts to oversee the donation bins and a small collection can for postage, coins, or dollars,” said Patricia Murphy, Executive Director. Last week, Cub Scout Pack 366 in Land O’ Lakes prepared and decorated bins for donations. Scouts are hosting bins throughout the

How Do You Feel?
Samantha Taylor Pure Health & Fitness Studios How do you feel when you wake up in the morning? How do you feel when you look in the mirror? How do you feel when you stand in your closet once again, finding nothing that “looks right”? How do you feel by the end of the day when you want to spend time with your family but are possibly too tired? One of the most common things women tell me is that they just don’t feel good. Something is off and they don’t want to feel that way anymore. Also, how you feel about your body can affect every area of your life: your confidence in your career, your intimacy with your spouse, or becoming a homebody because you don’t want to be seen by others. It breaks my heart when I hear women share these things because I know I can help them change that. I don’t believe God created us to hide from the world or hide from ourselves, and when you don’t feel good, you aren’t typically as involved in life. I even had a woman recently tell me that her family came in from out of town and they wanted to see Clearwater beach, but after 30 minutes of trying outfit after outfit on, she felt she looked frumpy and fat
in every one. So she lied to her family and told them she couldn’t go. As they were out enjoying life, she was at home in bed crying because she just couldn’t believe how far out of control her body had gotten. I don’t know if you can relate to that or not, but it’s a very common thing women deal with. I also find that most people don’t realize how bad they truly do feel until they start to feel better. Then they realize by how great they feel that they actually felt pretty bad physically and emotionally. I recently cut out sugar from my eating for at least 3 months because I am turning 40 and I wanted to go 3 whole months with no sugar. Well I am on week 9, and I feel great! The mental fog has lifted. I am so mentally clear and have so much more energy, and the cravings are completely GONE! After a few weeks of this, I felt like a dark cloud had lifted from my head, and I can think clearly now. I think many people really underestimate how what they eat on a daily basis affects how they feel inside and out. I have seen that even depression can be totally gone when someone balances out their nutrition. I pray you take this article as a sign that it’s time to really start doing something about your health and fitness so you can feel great and have abundant energy and not feel older then you actually are. The best place to start is with a Body Transformation Analysis. Call me at 813-909-4939 or go to www.purehealthstudios.com/consult.

Is God Doing Something New In Your Life?
Dr. Dianne Coflin Pastor, River of Life Church Did you know that God works in different seasons of your life? In the same manner that we experience change from one season to another, so it is when God begins to transition us to something new. For instance, it may be a job change, a move to a new place, or changing a certain way of doing something. It also could involve a change spiritually that God begins to transition in us. The word transition is defined as a movement, passage, or change from one position, state, stage, subject, concept, etc. to another. Initially, we can get so accustomed to where we are that we are not open to transition. Jesus put it like this in Luke 5:37-39. He said, “No one pours new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the fresh wine will burst the skins and it will be spilled and the skins will be ruined (destroyed). But new wine MUST be put into fresh wineskins. And no one after drinking old wine IMMEDIATELY desires new wine, for he says, ‘The old is better.’” Using this analogy in regard to change or transition, we see it must begin with a fresh new attitude in order for it to be embraced. He also warned that our tendency is to resist and remain in the old way or (place) as HE said we wouldn’t IMMEDIATELY desire the NEW. Why would that be important to know? To try to force change from an old way to
a new way without changing the vessel would ruin it. In Isaiah 43:19 (Ampl.) it says “Behold, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs forth. Do you not perceive and know it, and will you not give heed to it?” If you will notice, God draws our attention to “NOW,” and it springs forth, particularly calling us to perceive it, know it, and give heed to it. I believe that God is saying here that transition is going to REQUIRE us to attain awareness and understanding. The verse just above in Isaiah 43:18 is very interesting, for it says “Do not earnestly remember the former things. Neither consider the things of old.” Here again we see that in order for the NEW to spring forth, we have to make sure our attention does not remain on the old! Why? Because we will NEVER break through to something new if we hang onto the old. I wonder how many times God wanted to bring about a NEW THING in someone’s life, and they were so resistant to change that they were unable to receive the blessing God intended. I want to encourage you today, when God begins transition, remember He is well able to lead you and guide you. All He asks is that you have an open heart! If you are struggling with that, ask HIM for grace (ability beyond your ability) and He WILL bless you!! Dr. Dianne Coflin, Co-Pastor River of Life Church, Lutz, Florida. Biblical Dating In 26 years of ministry of working with young people, I would say that dating is definitely at the top of the list of things that gets teens into trouble. In my experience, a majority of the problem is that most parents have no clear direction on the topic of dating and relationships for their teenagers. With a lack of direction combined with so many opinions that have been adopted from a worldly standpoint, our young people are nearly doomed for failure. May I say to parents that this is a critical topic, one that you cannot avoid dealing with. It needs to start much younger than what most would think. Biblical dating is not the most popular topic, and for many, it will be classified as “old fashioned” and “outdated.” I firmly believe that we have an obligation to God to do the best we can to train every child that He has placed into our care at Hope. With that in mind, I take the time every year to have a dating seminar with our 7th-12th graders. For most all of them, it is the first time in their lives that they have looked at boy/girl relationships from a biblical perspective. Let me share with you a few of the principles we teach our children. 1 God placed Adam in the garden. Because of Adam’s walk in life, the garden was the most important thing to him. His heart’s desire was taking care of the garden. Because of our teens’ walk of life, the most important thing for them should be studying, serving the Lord, sports, church activities, etc. 2 God created the exact, perfect, ideal woman for Adam. Adam did not have to go looking for Eve. Adam was faithfully serving the
Lord when God brought Eve to Adam. Our teens do not have to go looking for someone. They should faithfully serve the Lord, and in God’s timing, He will be faithful to bring the exact, perfect, ideal mate for them. 3 Then the big question. What is the purpose for dating anyway? Is it just to have fun and spend time with someone you enjoy? Or could we be honest and say that dating doesn’t normally stay at a friendship level but grows deeper. I believe the purpose for dating is to find a life mate. When two people date, regardless of age, it always leads to a more intimate relationship. 4 Unless your 16 year old son or daughter is ready for marriage, it may be worth rethinking this whole “going out” and “going steady” thing. There is certainly nothing wrong with a bunch of young people spending time together and enjoying each other’s fellowship. As a matter of fact, it’s healthy. The youth department of your church is a great avenue for just that. The problem comes when young people want to start singling off, trading rings, and establishing some type of ownership of each other. Remember, parents, that God has trusted you with that teenager, and if anyone “owns” them, it is you and you alone. This ownership does not change until the day you walk them down the aisle in marriage. I would encourage every parent to begin at a very early age to train your children in the biblical perspective of dating and proper relationships with those of the opposite sex. There are so many broken lives of young people that could have been saved had parents took a stand and applied some of these simple Bible truths. God’s way still works!

Finally, it appears that we have gotten past the stretch of summer that can throw a zero wind, 95 degree, high humidity day at you. The air has seemed a little drier, and there has been a touch of fall in the air. As a fisherman, that is an indication of good things to come. Cooler temperatures will cool the water and this causes our fish to eat more. They will be more active, and fishing will certainly get better. This is an exciting time of year to fish inshore because of a couple things. One is that we are in the middle of our redfish invasion that happens every year late in the summer. These fish come into our fishing areas in large numbers. It’s nothing to see several schools of several hundred on a good day. It’s also possible to get out there and have trouble finding a single school of fish as these guys are not resident fish and will move frequently and not adhere to a certain pattern for long. Keep in mind they are moving with the tides and cover a lot of ground anyway.
The second exciting thing is that snook season is open. It opened Sept. 1st and will remain open until November 30th. The size requirements are 28’ - 33’ and have a bag limit of 1 per person. The harvesting of snook also requires a snook stamp. This is $10 and can be bought when purchasing your fishing license. Snook are my personal favorite to catch due to the fight they give you. I’ve heard people say they are like a bass on steroids. I agree with that. Another great thing about snook is they are a good fish to target at night. I run night charters for them, and it takes the whole sunburn thing out of play. Those are the two biggest attractions inshore this time of year but certainly not the only game in town. We still have some Spanish mackerel around, and the trout bite has been decent. The problem with the trout bite lately is most of the fish we have been catching are underslot fish. That should change as the water cools and the bigger trout move in out of the deeper water. Flounder, grouper, snapper, sharks, and grunts are all still around and can be a fun fish to catch. Each trip is unique in its own way. I certainly don’t take 6 year olds out for a tarpon trip, but a small child like that would have a blast catching grunts or trout. Actually, kids get the biggest thrill catching the bait. When its easy, so do I. Remember: don’t let your kid be the one that got away, take them fishing. LOL Transport & Moving Toiletries Drive The office staff at LOL Transport & Moving are collecting hotel and sample-sized toiletries for struggling and homeless veterans and families via Metropolitan Ministries. All donations will be accepted and appreciated. “Shampoo, conditioner, lotion, soap, deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrushes, razors, shaving cream, and feminine products are just some ideas of what people are already bringing in. So many people have a ‘junk drawer’ full of hotel toiletries or sample products collecting dust. People in need tear up or cry when they receive these little gifts of kindness. What some people consider little, others consider a blessing,” stated Rene Van Hout, owner of LOL Transport & Moving. Donations
Wes Van Hout, Jan Roberts, Rene Van Hout, Austin Williamson, Karen Horgan, Robin Hanna, and Sam Mendolera are the office team collecting the donations.
can be dropped off at 5811 Ehren Cutoff in Land O’ Lakes Monday-Saturday. A staff member will pick up donations if you call 813-996-3775.

What Does The Fox Say? Article and photo by Jeffrey Neil Fox
Fan Hall of Famer Jon Chelna aka “JC Nasty”
It’s important to remember the 12th man, the fan in the stands that is rooting and hooting for his hometown team. It’s tough to show unconditional support when your team’s play is somewhat lackluster. True fans hang in with their team and look for their gridiron heroes to fight their way through adversity. There is nothing better when your team is victorious. It’s an awesome feeling to see your team dominate its opponent. Tampa has a rich sports history and tradition of winning championships. What professional team do YOU think will bring the next title to Tampa? The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Tampa Bay Rays, or the Tampa Bay Lightning? Congratulations are in order to Trinity, FL resident Jon Chelena, aka JC Nasty, for getting elected into the Professional Football Hall of Fame (Class of 2014). Chelena was honored up in Canton, Ohio the same weekend that Tampa Bay Buccaneer football legend Derrick Brooks was enshrined into the Professional Football Players Hall of Fame. Chelena has been an over-the-top fan of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for many years. He is a proud member of the NASTY Krewe and participates in many charity events. Chelena manages a string of Family Fitness
Centers when he is not giving back to his community and rooting for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. John Chelena recently said, “It’s part of your civic responsibility to support the hometown teams. I like to support charities through my JC Nasty persona. I’m honored and humbled to have been elected into the elite professional football fan Hall of Fame.” October is prime tailgating season. The weather has cooled down, and there isn’t as much of a chance you will have to deal with torrential rains. Many fans dig in early and set up tailgate extravaganzas with elaborate canopies, decorations, grills, tables, and chairs. The finest food and drink that you can imagine is well-represented in the parking lot. Some fans just sit on the back of their “tailgate” and eat fast food that they brought with them. It’s all good! It’s important to put your game face on. You can sense the excitement in the air as it gets closer to game time. The pregame pageantry at RJS for the Tampa Bay Buccaneer home games is the most elaborate of any stadium I’ve been to. A transition has to be made where each player has to transform himself from a mild-mannered civilian into a terrorist football player. Many say playing in an NFL football game is akin to getting into a high-speed auto crash every weekend. There is nothing more exciting than watching America’s most popular and favorite sport, NFL football. Win or lose, Tampa is fortunate to have the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Let’s go, Bucs! Jeffrey Neil Fox has covered the Tampa Bay sports scene for over four decades. He owns a specialty advertising company, FoxMarketPlace.com, and Next Generation Print & Direct Mail. 813-391-2495 • jeffreyneilfox@gmail.com

The Caregiver Corner—Dementia, Alzheimer’s and Normal Aging Thought for the day: A person with dementia does not necessarily have Alzheimer’s, but a person with Alzheimer’s definitely has dementia. As we age, just as our bodies start to physically slow down, so too does our brain. It is natural for it to take longer for us to retrieve memories, process questions, solve problems, etc. as we get older. It is not normal, however, for us to forget things altogether or not to be able to generally deal with activities of daily living. That is usually an indication of mild cognitive impairment or dementia. MCI is a term used to describe when a person has memory or other thinking problems greater than normal for someone their age and education. Dementia is a general term used to describe a decline in mental ability severe enough to interfere with daily living. Like a fever or a stomachache, dementia is the symptom, not the underlying cause. There are well over a hundred causes of dementia. Some are reversible. Some dementias are caused by onetime events and do not progress. Others get worse over time (are progressive). Dementias caused
by urinary tract infections (UTI’s), dehydration, thyroid problems, or certain vitamin deficiencies are often easily reversible. Memory loss associated with a stroke (or other vascular issues) is the typical irreversible non-progressive dementia example. Alzheimer’s is the most prevalent dementia cause (it accounts for 60-80% of all dementia cases) and it is progressive (Parkinson’s-related dementia is another progressive type). Because each type of dementia cause is different, it is important to obtain a proper diagnosis. Dehydration might just require more liquid or a trip to the hospital for an IV. A UTI will need antibiotics. Vascular dementia may not require any medication but attention to the underlying heart or vascular problem so another stroke does not occur, causing more damage. Even with the progressive types, the medical treatment is different for those with Alzheimer’s than for those with Parkinson’s or Huntington’s, etc. For most of the progressive types, there is no cure. But there are medications that can slow the progress. Also, there

is great benefit to understanding the general progression because the way a caregiver approaches a loved one during the different stages is different. For example, in the later stages of Alzheimer’s, it is inappropriate to correct the patient or to constantly ask them if they remember who you are. Behaviors like this only agitate them and cause them to feel bad. Over the next few months, we will be discussing Alzheimer’s in a little more detail. In the interim, to find out more about Dementia and Alzheimer’s, see our website or go to alz.org (the website for the Alzheimer’s Association). They have a wealth of information on those two topics with links to the primary sites associated with some of the other major dementias, including Parkinson’s related dementia. The Caregiver Corner is coordinated by Arthur Moseley. Arthur and his wife, Frieda, are the owners of the Tampa and Pasco Offices of Griswold Home Care, one of the area’s leading referrers of non-medical private pay home care services. The caregivers they refer provide companionship, homemaking services, and personal care. NR30211139 NR30211332
