Hope: The Anchor of the Soul

The Certainty of God’s Promise Hebrews 6:13-20 An anchor was a popular image in the ancient Mediterranean world. Because that economy depended on shipping, the anchor came to symbolize safety and steadiness. The writer of Hebrews used the word to remind believers that God has given a hope that holds firm in any storm. Hope is a healthy attitude. Anticipating good brings comfort to the mind and heart. In contrast, a state of hopelessness is a terrible condition in which to find oneself. It’s overwhelming and depressing to think that what you’re facing cannot be changed or resolved. For the person who has lost all hope, life looks like a long, dark tunnel going nowhere. “Hope deferred makes the heart sick.” (Proverbs

13:12) Emotional, physical, and even mental illness haunt a person who feels trapped in a bleak situation. But as long as there is a God, no situation is hopeless. In Him, we have the promise of the second half of that proverb: “Desire fulfilled is a tree of life.” Believers have a hope that anchors their soul. Our relationship with Jesus Christ brings us close to the throne of heaven, where we can cast all of our burdens before an omnipotent God. Moreover, we can cling to Him through any trial that comes our way. Because of the Lord’s great love, He provides strength for weary bodies, peace for anxious minds, and comfort for grieving hearts. In short, He lights that darkened tunnel and tenderly guides us through trying situations.

Prayer

Susie Walther, The Well Bible Study Ministry

This is my working definition of prayer: physical words spoken into spiritual places that have a spiritual effect on physical realities. I believe prayer has two key sides to it— communion and combat. t’s communion with God and each other, but it’s also combat against the kingdom of darkness. God commands us to “pray without ceasing,” which simply means we

must be unrelenting. Why does God tell us to pray without ceasing? Because no one can stand up under endless bombing! When a city is under constant attack, you really only have a few options: you can stay and be destroyed, you can retreat, or you can surrender.

Faith Without Faithfulness Is Dead

Dr. Douglas Wingate, Ph.D. Life Christian University This past January 13th, Jesus gave me a mini-vision that has proven to be prophetic for a number of people. In the vision, I simply saw a door that opened and beyond that door was another door. Each door opened successively until I saw about 10 doors and their openings. Right after that, the Lord spoke to me and said, “This will be a year of open doors for you.” At the time I didn’t know this word would be meant for others as well, but soon after, my wife, Susan, began telling me that a number of prophetic ministries she had been following were declaring the same word. When a prophetic word comes that we believe is for us personally, it is vital that we realize the importance of our responsibility to that word. When God reveals something about His future will for us, He is doing so in the context of covenant. He is always thinking of our partnership. We must be faithful stewards of our part of the covenant, which, in this case, is to bathe the prophetic word in prayer so that we will recognize the doors when they open. Most of these prophecies are conditional words that will not come to complete fruition without our faithful participation. I love the book of James. In James 2:17 and 20, James tells us, “Faith without works is dead.” We know that James is referring to the corresponding actions that result from hearing God. He is using the illustration of Abraham offering his son Isaac on the altar at God’s command in verse 21. I believe that it would be suitable to substitute the word “faithfulness”

for the word “works” in this entire passage. In other words, faithfulness is the reasonable and appropriate response of a believer when they hear directions from such a loving Heavenly Father, or from such a compassionate Lord and Savior. So now we can easily say, “Faith without (faithfulness) is dead.” I love the understanding that comes when we read verse 22 and substitute the word “faithfulness” for “works.” It says, “Do you see that faith was working together with his (faithfulness) and by (faithfulness) faith was made perfect.” Also verse 24, which says, “You see then that a man is justified by (faithfulness), and not by faith only. The reason I believe we should revere the perspective of James is this: no other human on earth spent as much time with Jesus as this man. As Jesus’ half-brother, and the second son born to Mary, James would have lived and worked right next to his older brother, Jesus, for perhaps 25 years or more. Jesus knew from the age of 12 that He had to be about His “Father’s business.” I am sure that He developed His teaching ministry by constantly sharing His insights with His own family. James probably heard more of the Word of God taught by the Messiah than any other man alive. And yet, he did not believe in his own brother’s ministry when Jesus launched out around the whole country. We don’t know why he didn’t follow his brother, or even if he had been asked to go, but if he didn’t believe in his brother’s cause, he very well may have felt that Jesus had abandoned the family carpentry business, leaving him, James, with the all the responsibilities. When Jesus and His disciples were so busy ministering to the people that they couldn’t even eat, James and the family came to take Jesus away, thinking that He had gone insane. Mark 3:21 says, “But when His own people heard about this, they went out to lay hold of Him, for they said, ‘He is out of His mind.’”

We are familiar with the deep remorse that Peter had, having denied knowing the Lord right before the Crucifixion. Can you imagine how James must have felt after Jesus was raised from the dead? He had listened to his brother for 25 years and never believed in Him. When he came to the realization that his own brother really was the Son of God, who died for him, and is now his Savior and Lord, he must have also felt great remorse. I believe that he determined right then to be the most faithful of all the disciples. He began to use the great wealth of understanding, now flooding his mind by revelation, from all of those years of mentoring by Jesus. James’ deep commitment and faithfulness to Jesus found him exceeding the influence

of even the Apostles of the Lamb. He became the Pastor of the Church at Jerusalem, from which the Apostles themselves traveled out and came back to report. I believe if we diligently pray about God’s open doors for our lives and ministries, and determine, like James, to faithfully do what the Lord is leading us to do this next year, that we will find greater fruitfulness for His kingdom than we have ever seen before. Since December 2014, Dunndeal Publications has donated space to educate our readership on the horror that is human trafficking. Victims of modern day slavery are often hidden in plain sight. As a society we must all strive to recognize this evil in order to make a difference— someone’s life may well depend on our own educated awareness. The facts are grim: • The United States of America is the #1 consumer of trafficked human beings • Florida is third in the nation as a human trafficking destination • The Tampa Bay area ranks between second and third place in the state • 83% of the victims are American citizens, with an average age of 12 • A human trafficking victim has a typical life expectancy of only 7 years • Sex, forced labor, and organ harvesting are components of trafficking. Locating and rescuing a victim is the critical first step in restoring the mental and physical health of an exploited and enslaved individual. Victims need medical care and basic necessities—food, clothing, and shelter. Rehabilitation is a slow process requiring time and resources. Many of these victims have been denied a chance to attend or finish school. Once rescued, a victim needs to develop the skills and education needed to become a survivor and to eventually thrive. The Salvation Army will provide GED classes at no charge to ensure the rescued girls receive an education.

If you think you have come into contact with a victim of human trafficking, do not become involved personally, but do call one of the professional services trained to recognize and rescue victims. Report your suspicions anonymously to local law enforcement, the National Human Trafficking Hotline at 1-888-373-7888, the U.S. Department of Justice Hotline at 1-888-428-7581, the Florida Abuse Hotline at 1-800-96-ABUSE (22873), or 911. Big Brother and Big Sister of the Year

Two compassionate and dedicated volunteer mentors and the children they have helped navigate through some difficult life challenges have been selected as Tampa Bay’s Big and Little Brother and Big and Little Sister of the Year, the local agency announced today. Big Brother Chris Butler of Largo and his Little Brother Elgin, who have been matched for more than five years, have been named the Big Brother and Little Brother of the Year for BBBS of Tampa Bay, the nation’s fourth largest BBBS agency representing Pinellas, Hillsborough, Pasco, Polk, Citrus, Hernando, and Sumter counties. And Big Sister Roxanne Connor of Safety Harbor and her Little Sister Megan, who have been matched in the school-based program at Eisenhower Elementary School in Clearwater for the past three years, have been named the Big Sister and Little Sister of the Year. Big Brothers and Big Sisters are adult volunteers who are matched with children facing adversity (called “Littles”) for professionallysupported one-on-one mentoring. Last year BBBS Tampa Bay matched more than 2,850 children with caring, positive role models. The impact of the relationships is significant,

with 98 percent of children matched more than a year being promoted to the next grade level last year, and 98 percent also avoiding any contact with the juvenile justice system. “Roxanne and Chris have both gone the extra mile in being consistent, thoughtful Bigs to their Littles, including full engagement with their teachers and legal guardians,” said Stephen Koch, President and CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay. “The results with their Littles are not surprising—confident, high achievers in school and in life. Chris, a Senior Vice President in the investment products department at Raymond James, has been matched with Elgin for the past five years. He has seen Elgin grow from a young man to a high school junior, where he plays on the football and basketball teams. Chris has been able to help Elgin navigate through many challenges—the death of two grandparents, personal experiences that caused him to move between family members during his freshman year at high school, friends who had become shooting victims— keeping him on a path to success. He has become like a member of Elgin’s family.

Is Travel Insurance Worth It?

Whether planning an extended international vacation or a quick getaway, it’s wise to consider coverage. Travel insurance is intended to cover medical expenses, trip cancellation, lost luggage, flight accidents, and other losses incurred while traveling, either internationally or within one’s own country. Since each individual’s needs are different, the best insurance option is not always a onesize fits all approach. But comparing policies can help a traveler decide which policy is the best and most appropriate. Travel insurance can usually be arranged at the time of the booking of a trip to cover exactly the duration of that trip, or a “multitrip” policy can cover an unlimited number of trips within a set time frame. Some policies offer lower and higher medical-expense options; the higher ones are chiefly for countries that have extremely high medical costs. Medical Expenses coverage can be Per Occurrence or

Maximum Limit. Several private organizations will provide medical information and insurance for overseas travelers. Listed below are a few companies we recommend. St.Patrick

Whose alias was known as Maewyn Succat

Every March 17th, millions of people all over the world put on their best green attire to celebrate in honor of St. Patrick’s Day. But who was St. Patrick? To start with, St. Patrick wasn’t even Irish, and his real name given at birth was Maewyn Succat, throughout his childhood up until the time he was ordained as a priest. The beloved apostle was not born on the Emerald Isle but that’s about all we know for sure. St. Patrick was born around the end of the 4th century in England Circa, a part of the BritainRoman Empire. His story, “The Leaves of the Clover,” states that he was born in Bannavem Taberniae in 386 AD, but you won’t find that city anywhere on a Britain map today. Even though experts disagree about where he was born, it may have been in England, Scotland, or Wales. But what is clear in the Declaration, which was allegedly written by Patrick himself, is that it is believed that he was born in Roman-Britain into a wealthy Roman-British family. His father, Calphurnius, was a deacon from a Roman family of high social standing. His mother, Conchessa, was a close relative of the great patron St. Martin of Tours. St. Patrick’s grandfather, Pontius, was also a member of the clergy. Surprisingly, St. Patrick himself was not raised with a strong emphasis on religion. Education was not particularly stressed during his

childhood either. Even though the boy showed little or no interest in religion, soon all of that would change. Later in life, this would become a source of embarrassment for St. Patrick, who in the early 440’s would write in his book “The Confessio,” “I blush and fear exceedingly to reveal my lack of education.” When Rome withdrew its allegiance from Britain because of the fall of the west, a group of Irish pirate raiders began to raid Britain. Maewyn at the age of 16 was captured by Irish pirates who brought him to Ireland where he was sold into slavery in Dalriada. His job there was to tend sheep. As he mastered Milchu, he became a high priest of Druidism, a pagan sect that ruled religious influence over Ireland. In viewing his enslavement as God’s test of his faith during his six years of captivity, he became deeply devoted to Christianity through constant prayer. In a vision, he saw the children of pagan Ireland reaching out their hands to him. He grew increasingly determined to free the Irish from Druidism by converting them to Christianity.

The idea of escaping enslavement came to St. Patrick in a dream. A voice he believed to be God told him it was time to leave Ireland and that he would find passage on a ship where he could sail back home to England. Eager to see the dream materialize, St. Patrick convinced some sailors to let him board their ship to France. Lost for 28 days covering about 200 miles of territory in the process, Maewyn at last was reunited with his family. Now a free man, Maewyn never lost sight of his vision and could not forget the Irish children reaching out to him. In another dream, an angel told him that he must return to

Ireland and help the people as a missionary. Maewyn then went to Auxerre, France where he studied and entered the priesthood under the guidance of the missionary St. Germain. As time passed, Pope St. Celestine I consecrated Maewyn as St. Patrick, Bishop of the Irish, so Maewyn adopted the name St. Patrick as an ordained priest and headed back to Ireland through Pope St. Celestine. Spreading “The Good News,” Christian Gospel to the pagans, where he was known as a prisoner, he wanted to covert a pagan Celtic culture from sun worship to Christianity, for those who worship the sun will get misfortune and will be punished for doing so. But for those who worship Christ, the true Son will be awarded. Continued on www.dunndealpublications.com.

Cultural Warfare vs. Christian Lifestyle James H. Willis, III Founder and President The Willis Agency, Inc 813-948-9109 Jim@TheWillisAgency.com www.TheWillisAgency.com 1 Peter 5:7 Has anyone noticed that as Christians we are in a cultural war? These days are illustrating it more than ever before, at least so it seems. We are clashing on every level of life. In this article I will touch on the clash of Cultural Warfare vs. Christian Lifestyle. In our culture today, it encourages us to spend all that we make. It aggressively teaches us to be needy and it attaches our self–worth to our net worth. I hope I am not saying anything that is startling here, but just like all other areas in life, God wants us to use our money differently than the world does. What does a Christian lifestyle look like? Well, let me share a little about what I mean as far as lifestyle and spending. 1) Lifestyle spending is a sum total of all financial spending and is not related to other uses of money. 2) It is typically the most significant use of money. 3) It is the primary determinate of “How much is enough?” 4) It is always money “after taxes.” 5) Lifestyles typically drive debt decisions. In order for us to adopt these principles, let me give you some of the why’s and how’s with Biblical principles. 1) Financial “contentment” is a choice, not a function of lifestyle. 2) We are commanded to provide for the needs of our family. 3) I must understand that I cannot accumulate enough money to protect my family against all contingencies. 4) I can learn to be content. 5) What lifestyle I choose, I should live with joy. 6) The Bible

does not define a Christian lifestyle. Here are a couple of Bible references: 1 Tim 5:8, 1 Tim 6:6-8, 1 Tim 6:17-18, Phil 4:11-13, and Heb 13:5-6. Dr. David Jeremiah defines contentment this way: 1) No regrets of the past 2) No fear of the future 3) No envy in the present So how do I change my habits, behaviors, and thought processes? Here are 7 Principles of Lifestyle change: 1) Prov 3:5-6—Prayfully seek God’s direction regarding your lifestyle. 2) Phil 4:11—Learn to be content. 3) Ex 20:17—Learn to avoid coveting. 4) 1 John 2:15-17—Your lifestyle should not be determined by comparing it to others. 5) 1 Tim 4:4—Freely enjoy whatever you spend in the “Spirit.” 6) 1 Thess 4:11-12—Make an effort to live more simply. 7) Rom 12:2—Do not conform to the world. Finally, here are a couple of key points: Spend less than you make, having contentment, delayed gratification, and every spending decision is a spiritual decision. I hope you find this helpful and hopeful. Caring for you and yours, Jim P.S. Why not meet with me and we can discuss the first steps to a happier lifestyle? Give me a call at 813-948-9109.

Magnolia Manor ALF Barbara Keithly, Owner “I had a long, successful history of advertising with Dunndeal Publications for a prior business, so when I began plans for opening Magnolia Manor Assisted Living, I immediately called Dunndeal to put an advertising campaign in place. As soon as the papers are circulated each month, my phones ring non-stop. It is not unusual to receive forty calls a day. The calls are from prospective clients, prospective employees, and other businesses seeking to network and share resources. Dunndeal covers all my advertising needs and makes a tangible difference in my business success!”

Odessa Soccer Club

Odessa Soccer Club is set to kick off its Spring Season on March 25. The club completed its inaugural season last December, and a League Champion was crowned. League Director Young continues, “Our club has a recipe for having fun. We teach our players in order to have fun, they must do three things: play their best, pay attention, and obey their coaches, referees, teachers, and parents, etc. This is where success in our club transfers to what is valuable for the players’ futures. We call it Pay-Play-Obey!” Odessa Soccer Club’s Spring Season will offer two co-ed age divisions: 6-8 and 9-11. Teams will play a seven-game season, ending with a championship tournament on the last Saturday of the season, May 20. The league

will not play on Saturday, April 15 in observance of Easter weekend. All Saturday games and practices are held at 18105 Gunn Highway, Odessa, FL. Odessa Soccer Club teams will practice on Saturday mornings before their games. According to Mr. Young, “Families very much appreciate not being required to practice during the week so theY can spend time together, and students can focus on school work.” Mr. Young stated, “boys and girls who experience a competitive season at Odessa Soccer Club will aspire to improve, and it will carry over to every aspect of their life.” For more information, or to register, visit www.OdessaSoccerClub.com.

Quality Senior Home Care Services Anne Childers, Staff Writer

Sometimes due to injury, illness, or normal aging, an older adult may need extra help to remain safely at home. Local residents Ada Tapper, DNP, ARNP, Director/Clinical Administrator and David Eason, Business Development Manager, realized the growing need for support services in the Tampa Bay area and jointly opened ComForCare Home Care. “We provide the day-to-day care that your loved one may need instead of or in addition to care by a nurse or other health professional.” ComForCare’s compassionate, well-trained caregivers help seniors live independently

while continuing to enjoy the things they love. When family members and friends can’t be there, ComForCare Home Care can provide quality non-medical assistance delivered through a personalized care plan. Services can include grooming and hygiene, bathing and toileting, meal preparation, transportation and errands, medication reminders, safety supervision, light housekeeping, companionship, and family respite. Visit the website at www.comforcare.com/ north-hillsborough for additional information and call 813-374-2567 to schedule an assessment for yourself or a loved one.

From Abortion to Eternal Life When 17-year-old Lacey learned she was pregnant, she knew the only course of action was abortion. She sought out Oasis to learn more getting one. The volunteer client educator listened to Lacey compassionately and walked her through all the options, but Lacey hardened her heart to all choices except abortion. At the end of the session the volunteer asked Lacey if she could pray with her, and when she agreed, something shifted. Lacey felt it as she was prayed over, and although she’d never been to church before and didn’t believe in God, she felt something. The day before her scheduled abortion,

Lacey knew she couldn’t do it. That prayer had changed her heart, and she reached back out to Oasis for more support. Lacey opened her heart to the Lord, gave birth to her baby, and now she and her family are serving God. Lacey’s baby’s life was saved and so was Lacey’s—eternally. Stories like these are common at Oasis Pregnancy Care Center. We are making a difference for the kingdom and we need your help! If God is leading you to minister life, Oasis will train you. All it takes is one fourhour shift per week. Call Anita Albert-Watson at 813-406-4965 for more information.

Hope: The Anchor of the Soul Continued from Page 1

“God did this so that, by two unchangeable the curtain, where our forerunner, Jesus, has things in which it is impossible for God to lie, entered on our behalf. He has become a high we who have fled to take hold of the hope set priest forever in the order of Melchizedek.” betfore us may be greatly encouraged. We have In Touch Ministries, Jan. 30, 2017 this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and Daily Readings for Devoted Living secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind Intouch.org

Prayer

Continued from Page 1 With regard to Satan, without a doubt, we’re never going to destroy him. He’s going to be around until Jesus sends him into the Abyss. He’s also never going to surrender or just quit fighting because we decide to pray. He can’t quit. This is what he does because this is what he is! Satan is a killer, a thief, a murderer, a liar, a destroyer. Our prayers aren’t ever going to turn him into a nice guy. He’s not going to enter into diplomatic talks with us. But Jesus has given us His authority and enough power through this thing called prayer to cause Satan and his forces to retreat. We can push him back, we can disrupt his activity, we can cause his destruction to roll backwards, and then when that happens we can rush in through prayer and put up the flag of Jesus in that space Satan once occupied in people’s lives.

We can also defend people through our prayers because, for sure, Satan will launch a counterattack against them. But that’s okay because God has already told us to “stand firm.” Don’t give up an inch. Hold the line and then push forward again in prayer without ceasing. So, whatever you do this session, don’t go AWOL! Don’t choose your pride or your religious comfort over opening your mouth and praying for another soul sitting right there in a room with you who could use your firepower. It’s time to pray. CHARGE!! The Well meets at the First Baptist Church of Lutz, located at 18116 N US Highway 41 Lutz, FL 33549. For more information on The Well, please go to the website at http://www.thewellbiblestudy.org.
