Getting Ready for School Pastor Bruce Blagg, LifeQuest

“Get ready for school! It has been many years since my mom had to wake me up and tell me to get ready for school. I still remember her voice, as if it was yesterday, yelling those words. It was usually because I was still in bed, playing with some toys, or doing almost anything else but getting ready for school. This month, families begin preparing their children to go back to school. This includes clothes to buy, shoes to replace, backpacks and lunch boxes to be purchased, and school supplies to replenish. But most important of all (especially in my house) is getting back on a sleep schedule that adjusts the kids to the newer (and usually earlier) wake-up time.

Why Do We Do This?

Samantha Taylor Pure Health Studios I am always curious why we tolerate certain things in our life that obviously cause pain. I feel like I have been on this lifelong journey of removing things from my life that do. However, there still seems to be lingering ones that I am working on. Thankfully, it’s not an issue with food or weight anymore, but for so many I talk to, it is. I heard someone say, “You will never change what you tolerate.” That is so true! When I overcame my sugar addiction, I had to get to a point where I would not tolerate that issue in my life anymore. For many of you, you are dealing with excess weight, yet the interesting thing I have found after training over 3,000 women is that some people aren’t really connected to the pain in their life the weight causes. And honestly, the ones that are more in tune to the pain do tend to want to do something about it, and the ones that have the attitude, “Well, I have high self-esteem, so me being 60 lbs. overweight doesn’t affect my life in anyway.” Now this is very rare, most women do connect their self-esteem with how they feel about their body, but

after talking to someone that says it doesn’t affect them, I find that is not true. Anyone carrying an extra 60 lbs. on them will have some side effects, and they vary from person to person. Some of them are typically low energy, not feeling good about your body, frustrated that you can’t stick with it, some depression over it, not being able to fit into any of your clothes, having to buy all the “frumpy” stuff that they tend to make these days for women in the plus sizes, or isolation because of not engaging in activities anymore. If you can get more in touch with why you don’t want to be overweight anymore, you can really find your motivation to change. If you don’t do something, how much longer are you going to tolerate this in your life? Where are you going to be in the next 5 to 10 years if you don’t do something now? Taking action is the most critical step to getting started on any journey, just like if you want to drive to Georgia—you have to first get into the car. I encourage you to take some kind of action. It is now August and we have 5 months before 2014, why not start doing something now? If you need some resources, I have a few things for you. You can call me to take action and set up your Body Transformation Analysis at 813-909-4939, or if you have issues with sugar, you can visit www.SugarAddictionSolution.com.

Digital Dentistry, Part 3

Dr. Sarah Jockin Lake Park Dental This article is part three of a series of articles discussing the advantages of digital technology in today’s modern dental office. In the first article, I explained how digital impression taking can eliminate the need for goop inside the mouth. Instead, a highresolution video is taken of the patient’s teeth and gums and digitally converted into a three-dimensional virtual model. Today’s article focuses on how this digital model can be used to make dentistry more convenient for the patient and take less time in the process. If the dental office is set up with a milling machine, the digital model is used in-office to fabricate final dental restorations like veneers, onlays, or crowns in a matter of minutes. Let me explain how this is a big improvement from what we used to do. If you have ever had treatment that involved a veneer, onlay, or crown, you probably remember that you ended your first appointment with a “temporary.” This interim restoration was placed after the impression was taken and sent to the lab. It protected the tooth while the final restora-

tion was made somewhere else, which took probably right around two weeks. Once the veneer/onlay/crown was back at the dental office, there was the need for a second visit to switch out the temporary for the final restoration. We can now eliminate the need for this second visit altogether! After the digital model is created, a restoration is designed on the computer using CAD/CAM software and this digital file can be sent to a milling machine. If your dentist has one of these machines at the office they can mill the restoration in a matter of minutes and it can be delivered to the patient the very same day, eliminating the need for a temporary. On average, this extends your appointment by a few minutes, but that time is usually shorter than the second visit would take and nobody has to re-arrange their work schedule anymore. And while I’d like to believe that my patients just love coming in for their dental visits, I have a feeling most don’t miss us just yet after only two weeks. Stay tuned for the fourth and final installment of this series of articles to find out how patients who need multiple teeth replaced can benefit from digital technology in dentistry. Warren Sapp Hall of Fame 2013 Article and photography by Jeffrey Neil Fox

Warren Sapp changed the way defensive tackles play the game.

Warren Sapp got inducted into the coveted Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2013 on August 3rd in Canton, Ohio. I remember meeting Warren when he was announced as the number one draft pick for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. At the time, I was publishing the team publication, Buccaneer Magazine. I told Warren that I was the publisher and the first thing he said to me was, “When is my picture going to be on the cover?” I told Warren that he would be on the cover the next issue. I took many photographs of Warren during his career. Sapp wreaked havoc in the backfield of opposing teams. There was no stopping Sapp when he wanted to penetrate the offensive line to get to the quarterback. I remember the vanity plate on Sapp’s car. It said “Quarterback Killer.” One of the lasting memories I have of Warren Sapp is when we walked through the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton Ohio on a private tour together. The Bucs played a preseason game against Pittsburgh that year. During our tour we stopped at the bust of Lee Roy Selmon. I took a photo of Sapp with the bust of Selmon and told Warren that he would be the next Buccaneer to be inducted into the prestigious and exclusive Pro Football Hall of Fame. Little did I know that my prediction would be prophetic and would come to

pass. Selmon now has company in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and Warren Sapp’s bust will be displayed at the Hall prominently throughout the passage of time. Should I predict who the next Tampa Bay Buccaneer will be that will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame? I predict that Derrick Brooks will be the next Buccaneer to get fitted for the jacket and enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. This will be the year for Sapp as he is inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame and then the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ prestigious and exclusive Ring of Honor. His name will be a permanent fixture at Raymond James Stadium next to other enshrinees like John Mckay, Lee Roy Selmon, and Jimmy Gilles. Sapp will be in good company. You do need a roster this time of year with all the new faces wearing the Buccaneers uniform. Bucs Coach Greg Schiano and his staff is focused on seeing which players stand up next to the competition set out in training camp. No position is guaranteed, and every player has a chance of chasing his dream of making the roster and playing football under the bright lights of the NFL. I’m looking for new stars and marquee players to endear themselves to the fans. Every season, new players and seasoned players emerge as go-to players. The team gels each day in preparation of the regular NFL season that is now just a few weeks away. I’m looking for our Pewter Pirates to play competitive smashmouth football. The Bucs are due to have an outstanding season. Do I sound like the proverbial optimist? Jeffrey Neil Fox writes a column for the Gazette every issue. Captain Ric’s Fish Tales Reel Simple Fishing Adventures

Capt. Ric Liles and Austin with his first-ever fish, caught while fishing with Reel Simple Fishing Adventures in Tampa Bay.

I’m going to have a little different kind of column today and tell a story of one of my recent trips. Fishing has stayed the same the last couple weeks, so I don’t really have a lot to tell you that is different from last month. The one thing that changed this past month is I had Austin from Baltimore on my boat. Austin is 7 years old, and obviously he did not set the trip up, but don’t be confused, the trip was totally about him. Austin’s grandpa, Tony Bond, set the trip up several months ago while he was fishing with me on another charter trip with some of his adult friends. If you’re one of Tony’s regular fishing buddies, you play second fiddle to Austin. I’m sure you already know that. Austin’s father Richie was on the boat as well for the trip, and he got shuffled behind Austin also. Austin had informed us that he had never had much luck fishing in his entire life and

hoped today would be different. Imagine that, his entire life at age 7 and never had a good day. That certainly brought a chuckle to the party. The elders on the boat played the day like it was supposed to be played. This was Austin’s day to change his luck. They let Austin fish when he wanted to fish, play with the bait when he wanted to set down the rod, take 20 minute snack breaks, whatever. My point is they let Austin regulate his own fishing intensity. One problem we did not have that day was forcing Austin to fish when he was losing interest. Remember, when you take your kids out that they do not have the attention span that we have. After catching the very first fish of his life plus 23 more to give him a boat best of 24 fish for the day, Austin said to his grandpa, “I didn’t used to like fishing, but now I love it.” Tony looked at me with a giant grin and said “we got him.” After we got back to the dock and cleaned the fish and everyone went their own way, I reflected back on the day and thought to myself that we left the sport better that afternoon than we found it that morning. Austin was hooked on the sport we all love—fishing. If you have any questions about fishing, email them to me and I will pick one a month and answer in the report. Until next time, good luck and be safe on the water. Remember: don’t let your kid be the one that got away, take them fishing. For charter information, you can call (813) 601-2900, email CaptainRic@msn.com, visit www.ReelSimpleFishing.com, or follow Reel Simple Fishing Adventures on Facebook.

Local Girl Scout Needs Your Assistance

Girl Scouts isn’t just about cookies. Girl Scouts teaches girls how to be leaders and encourages them to make the world a better place. One way Girl Scouts does this is through the Girl Scouts Gold Award. The Gold Award is earned through a take-action project where girls learn to make a difference. Sarah Lucker is a local Girl Scout from Lutz working on her Gold Award Project. When the recent tornadoes hit two elementary schools in Oklahoma, Sarah knew she needed to help the students there. She contacted a guidance counselor in Moore, Oklahoma and asked how she could help. The result is the following list of items which she is collecting to send to Oklahoma: • Over-the-ear headphones • Tissues

• Scissors (round and shape ended) • Colored markers (thin and wide) • Recess games (cards, board games, etc. ages 5-11) • Clorox wipes • Baggies (gallon size) • Paint sets and brushes • Play-Doh Several local businesses are supporting her by sponsoring drop boxes to collect the donations. You can help by dropping off a donation to any of these businesses from August 1st through August 22nd. • Brunchie’s (14366 N. Dale Mabry Hwy., Tampa 33618) • Sam Ash Music (13133 N. Dale Mabry Hwy., Tampa, FL ) • PDQ Restaurant (12650 N. Dale Mabry Hwy., Tampa, FL 33618) • Pak Mail (4522 West Village Drive, Tampa, FL 33624) • Old McMicky’s Farm (9612 Crescent Drive, Odessa, FL 33556) Donated items will be shipped to Oklahoma just in time for the classrooms as the students return back to school at the end of August. Air Doctor Air Conditioning will donate the shipping of all donated items. Sarah is learning that through her leadership and the generous support of her community that making a difference in the world is important and is the right thing to do.

Congratulations to Austin Vinson! From Page 1 Of those all-stars, only a few were selected to try out for the Florida All-State team in Kissimmee on July 13th. With the amount of elite baseball players from Florida, this is quite an honor to be selected. He currently plays for the New Tampa Tornadoes, led by manager Cregg Peterson.

Are You A Korean Vet? The US Department of Defense wishes to award every U.S. Korean veteran a certificate of appreciation as part of its 60th Anniversary Commemoration of the ending of the Korean War. Its criteria for eligibility is purposely broad. You may apply for this appreciation certificate if you served in any branch of the US military (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, or Coast Guard) between June 25, 1950 through the armistice on July 27, 1953. You are eligible whether or not you were physically in Korea during this time. Families of deceased Korean veterans may apply on their behalf. Many vets are unaware of this offer and/ or do not know how to apply. The American Legion Post 147 in Odessa is volunteering to help any vet obtain the certificate and receive it at a free banquet later this

fall. You DO NOT need to be a member of Post 147 to get your certificate through us. Here are two ways you can get all the information needed: A. (Preferred Method) Send an email to AMLegion147@gmail.com and give your name and phone number. We will email you all the info. B. No email? Then send a letter or postcard to Korean Certificate, Am Legion 147, P.O. Box 937, Odessa, FL 33556 and give your name, phone number, and postal mailing address. We will mail you the information. It is really important that vets do this as soon as possible, as the volunteers who process these applications and the people planning the banquet need to know how many people to expect.

Want to take this time to thank you for the Muvico Movie Passes that I won back in December. I finally got to use them and enjoy a movie with my family! We went to see Ironman 3 and we loved it as much as the first two! Thank you again. —Robin King

A Different Path for a College Graduate The summer before my senior year in college, I was at the pinnacle of my academic success. I had a great social life and future ahead of me, but I wasn’t quite fulfilled. I finally realized I was missing an integral part of life and I acted on it by calling out to God. My relationship with Christ since then has been the greatest love story I have ever witnessed. While encountering the joy of Christ’s love, my desire to share it increased a hundredfold! As a young Christian, I feel called to reach out to those in the same spiritual starvation that I experienced. I want college students to know that there is more to life than what the world offers. My name is Cassie Llano and I will spend the next few years as a missionary on college campuses around the U.S. Some ask “Why college students in the U.S?” The college campus is where most people make the decisions that will impact the rest of their life: what career field they go into, who they will marry, and what they decide

to dedicate their hearts to. The American college is where future world leaders gather to learn before they graduate and head off to influence the rest of the world. There, the energetic youth and future of Christians learn, grow, and become influential citizens. It’s there that the Holy Spirit can inspire them to grow in their faith and lead others with them. As a FOCUS (Fellowship of Catholic University Students) missionary, I will have the opportunity to be a messenger when college students find themselves asking the deep life questions. Through the grassroots approach of reaching students through small group bible studies, one-onone mentorship, and large-group events, FOCUS uses the model that Jesus Christ used during his public life. I get to share my day-to-day life with them. My radical availability on campus will allow me to walk with students on their journey. “So, being affectionately desirous of you, we were ready to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own selves, because you had become very dear to us.” - 1 Thessalonians 1:8 To learn more about FOCUS and how to support campus missions, please contact Cassie at cassie.llano@focus.org or at 813716-6942. I would love to speak with you!

Ever wonder what would happen if we treated our Bible like we treat our cell phone? What if we carried it around in our purses or pockets? What if we flipped through it several times a day? What if we turned back to go get it if we forgot it? What if we used it to receive messages from the text? What if we treated it like we couldn’t live without it? What if we gave it to kids as gifts? What if we used it when we traveled? What if we used it in case of emergency? This is something to make you go… hmmm… where is my Bible? Oh, and one more thing. Unlike our cell phone, we don’t have to worry about our Bible being disconnected because Jesus already paid the bill. Makes you stop and think ‘where are my priorities’? UNLESS you have the Bible on your phone, you only have to worry about dropped calls or being disconnected. That can’t happen with a book. (Author Unknown)

The Oldest High School Standing Today

The oldest high school building standing today in Hillsborough County is located at 2704 Highland Avenue in Tampa. It was designed by Wilson Potter of New York. The cornerstone reads HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL, but when it opened on October 12, 1911, it was called Hillsborough High School and E.L. Robinson served as principal. The building was enlarged in 1923 by M. Leo Elliott but by 1928, it was again too small and the school moved from the Highland Avenue site to a larger facility. In the fall of 1928, the building became THOMAS JEFFERSON JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL. Under the guidance of principal D.W. Waters, a transition began in 1939 to reestablish a high school. The school was named THOMAS JEFFERSON HIGH SCHOOL and the first class graduated in 1942. Again, having outgrown its physical capacity, the school

closed in 1967 but later reopened at a new location. On April 24, 1994, due to the efforts of the TJHS Alumni Association, the school was renamed the D.W. WATERS MEMORIAL CENTER. It serves today as a memorial to Mr. Waters and a symbol of the County’s early dedication to education. The building, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2007, was the third campus in Hillsborough High School’s history. The school, first established in 1885, left this campus for their fourth and current home in the nearby Old Seminole Heights neighborhood. The county established Thomas Jefferson High School at this site during the era of segregation to serve as the designated school for Hispanic students. Sometime after Jefferson High left to re-open at a new location, the building became home to George Washington Junior High School until that school’s closure in 1979. Currently, the “Old Hillsborough County High School” building is the home to the D.W. Waters Career Center, a Hillsborough County Public School for 11th and 12th grade students getting occupational and vocational training.

There is a lot to be done and never enough time and money. In spite of this, may I add one more item to your To-Do list? Remember to pray for your children, their friends, teachers and administrators. Pray your children will be safe, that they will adjust easily to new classes and situations. Pray that the friends they make will help encourage them to be their best and not influence them to do their worst. Pray they will learn and grow in maturity. Pray for their teachers. Ask God to provide them with creativity, wisdom, patience and strength needed to meet the challenges of teaching in this day and age. Pray the classrooms will be warm and inviting, a good place for teachers to teach and children to learn. Pray for the administrators to have the leadership, wisdom and resources needed to promote a safe learning environ-

ment that we all desire for our kids. The Bible says, “The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.” (James 5:16) You don’t have to be perfect to be considered “righteous.” Paul writes in Romans 4:5, “But people are counted as righteous, not because of their work, but because of their faith in God who forgives sinners.” Our prayers matter. They can make a difference. This month, along with all the purchases, preparations and changes in schedules, take the time to pray. I’m sure our children, teachers and school systems will appreciate our prayers, and they will benefit from them as well. bruceb@thelifequest.com 813-398-9742 [LifeQuest holds services every Saturday at 6:00pm at 4207 North Boulevard, Tampa.
