The Most Magnificent Gift of All

When you think about the way Jesus was born in comparative obscurity, he never did all the typical things that usually denote greatness. He never led an army or navy into battle. It doesn’t tell us that he ever wrote a book. He didn’t do any of the things that we typically think of as greatness. We don’t know what he looked like, though there are a lot of artists’ renditions of what we think Jesus looked like, and there’s nothing contemporary from this day. Yet he changed all of history around the world in the three and half years of his ministry. When we talk about biblical history, you have B.C and A.D. before Christ and after death, the year of our Lord. If you look in the encyclopedia or go to a museum of science, it doesn’t cast doubt on whether or not he lived. While Buddha and India might have had some profound sayings along with Krishna, Mo-

hammad, and different religions of the world, nobody spoke like Jesus and none of them died as a sacrifice for the sins of the world. There’s something very clearly different about Jesus. None of the other religious leaders of the world said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” There are over 300 Old Testament prophecies that talk about what to expect when the Messiah comes. In the first prophecy, God was speaking to Adam and Eve after the fall in Genesis 3:15: “And I will put enmity between you and the woman and between thy seed and her seed. He shall bruise thy head, and he shall bruise his heel.” This promised seed came through humanity as the Messiah or Christ. In the New Testament, you will see that they

The Peace of God

Dr. Douglas Wingate, Ph.D. Life Christian University Find the peace of God that is available only through Jesus Christ. The United States of America just finished another presidential election cycle. As in every presidential election before it, one side is elated through the victory of their candidate and the other side is despondent through the loss of their candidate. To many, this is just an exercise in power wrestling between two political parties. To others this concerns the primary direction that our country is heading, with possible catastrophic consequences for the wrong choice. In either case, when your side loses, you lose your peace and sense of well-being. I remember that as a young man, my sense of well-being was based in whatever level of success I was having in my pursuit of fame and fortune. I was challenged by a friend who told me that I was “hung up on my rock star ego trip, and that if Jesus was the only way to get to heaven, I was on my way to hell because I didn’t think that it was hip to be a Christian.” That statement rocked me to my core. I then picked up a Bible and examined the claims of Jesus. I read the gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke, and when I read through John’s gospel and arrived at John 16:33 and read the words of Jesus when he said, “These things I have spoken to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation, but be of good cheer. I have overcome the world.” For some reason I stopped after reading that verse and immediately the Lord Jesus spoke to me in what seemed to be an audible voice. He

said, “Doug, I am alive and I am the Lord.” I slipped out of my bed, got on my knees, and asked Jesus to be the Lord of my life. That was 43 years ago this month, and I have walked in the peace of God for all of those years. It has been quite the adventure, with great blessings and challenges, but it has all been worth it. I learned that God is always right, always good, and His word is a very sure guide for every situation of life. I feel so sorry for those who have not yet been enlightened to this life in Christ and are stumbling through life with no peace at all. I heard one of the presidential candidates say that Christians who believe the Bible were just going to have to change and stop believing that God is right. This candidate said we live in a new world now, and things have changed. Well no, things haven’t changed, and God is always right. I am not interested in living in the new world that disregards God’s truth. When I see the people protesting in the streets and getting so worked up that they begin rioting and disrespecting other people’s rights and property, I can tell that they do not know God and do not have His peace. This exercise in futility is not going to change the results of the election, it is just going to cause a great deal of problems for every one, especially those who are arrested, injured, or killed for their riotous actions. I always chuckle when I see a vehicle with the window sticker that spells “COEXIST” with a bunch of symbols from various religions. We can coexist while we are alive here on Earth, but we will not coexist for eternity. We are headed in two completely different directions. There is a hell to avoid and a heaven to gain. But we should certainly treat each other with respect and civility, because for now we do share a common existence on Earth. The way we treat each other is important because the Bible says that it is the love of God that draws a person to

The 12 Days of Christmas Facts, Fiction, Myths and Magic Anne Childers, Staff Writer Every year at this time the airwaves are full of Christmas music. One enduring Christmas carol is founded in history and surrounded in symbolism. The 12 Days of Christmas dates back to England and the 1500’s. According to the Catholic News Agency, Roman Catholics in England were not permitted to openly practice their faith from 1558 until 1829. It is believed someone during that period wrote The 12 Days of Christmas as a catechism teaching tool for young Catholics. On the surface it was just a song about true love and gift giving, but a deeper meaning was encoded in order to help children learn and remember important tenants of the Catholic faith. There are others who claim there is no truth to any hidden meaning, and the whole romantic notion is fiction and myth. Nevertheless, the Catholic News account presents a compelling argument that aligns with Biblical facts. Take a look for yourself. On the first day of Christmas—often thought to begin with Christmas Day going forward to January 6, not the days prior to Christmas. My true love gave to me—God, the one true love of all mankind, gave Jesus his only begotten son to the world on Christmas Day. A partridge in a pear tree—A partridge will willingly sacrifice its own life for its young and is a fitting symbol for Jesus, who willing died for our salvation. Two turtle doves—were in the Old and

the New Testaments. Three French hens—these stood for faith, hope, and love. Four calling birds—are thought to represent the four gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Five golden rings—represent the first five books of the Old Testament. Six geese a laying—stands for the six days of creation. Seven swans a swimming—represents the sevenfold gifts of the Holy Spirit: prophesy, serving, teaching, exhortation, contribution, leadership, and mercy. Eight maids a milking—represents the eight beatitudes. Nine ladies dancing—are the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit: charity, joy, peace, patience, goodness, mildness, fidelity, modesty, and chastity. Ten lords a leaping—represents the Ten Commandments. Eleven pipers piping—this stands for the eleven faithful apostles. Twelve drummers drumming—they are meant to symbolize the twelve points of belief in the Apostles’ Creed. So, fact or fiction, this beautiful old carol provides us all with something to think about during the Christmas season while we remember and honor God’s greatest gift to mankind, our Lord Jesus Christ!!! Merry Christmas and may God continue to bless us all!

By the time we hit 65, 1 out of 6 of us will be suffering from some form of dementia (severe memory impairment). By the time we reach 85, the odds are almost 50%. The most prevalent form of dementia is Alzheimer’s disease. For those families dealing with this, the holidays can be a particularly stressful time of the year. The Alzheimer’s Association has some useful tips for dealing with this disease during the holidays. Two of the links are: • http://www.alz.org/in_my_community_Holiday_Help.asp • http://www.alz.org/documents/colorado/Holiday_Guide_for_Alzheimers_ Caregivers(2).pdf Here’s a brief sampling: • Don’t feel compelled to hang onto established family traditions if they are no longer practical. Be willing to substitute or start a new activity that may become a tradition. • Familiarize friends and family with changes in behavior and appearance that they may notice in your loved one. Give them tips for communicating and how to watch for increased anxiety or situations that might cause frustration and methods for helping calm

your loved one down (the above links include a sample message you could send to relatives that might potentially visit with you over the holidays to help prepare them and minimize disruption to your loved one’s routine). • Invite children to visit only briefly or hold events that are adults only • Consider multiple small holiday meals with fewer people • Make nametags for everyone attending • Celebrate early in the day to reduce the likelihood of “Sundowner Syndrome” (evening confusion) • Keep the lights on to keep the room bright and the television off The Caregiver Corner is coordinated by Arthur Moseley. What is Biblical Stewardship? How does it have any impact on my life and my money? I’ll share with you my first personal experience with Biblical Stewardship. It was in the mid 90’s and I had financial frustration in every aspect of my life. It was absolutely horrible!! Once I got a grasp on this concept (ha, perhaps it got a grasp on me?!?), I was almost immediately set free. I felt an overwhelming burden lifted and a clear financial future by obeying God’s stewardship principles. May I also note: You don’t need to be a Christian to be successful applying these principles. I was liberated and focused on financial freedom. God’s way and love have helped 100% of the families we work with. Here are some of the major points of Biblical Stewardship: 1) Stewardship is the only area of the Christian life that cannot be faked. The way we spend our money is a true measure of our priorities.

2) Every spending decision is a spiritual decision. Ask, “Is this really what God wants me to do?” 3) Believing—this is the key to financial freedom. Often it is not rational or the American Dream. There are 4 Transcendent Planning Principles of Financial Success: 1) You must spend less than you make 2) Avoid the use of debt as much as possible 3) Build up liquidity, a “slush fund” of 3-6 months of expenses 4) Set long-term goals and plan ahead! These are some of the primary points of Financial Stewardship. Remembering that God really owns it all and provides for it all is at the forefront. And yet He leaves it to us to be good stewards of great blessings. My purpose is to be your Steward Assistant. Caring for you and yours, Jim

How NOT To Gain 5 Pounds This Month Samantha Taylor Pure Health & Fitness Studios I do love the feel of the holidays, but we all know along with them come lots of savory foods that we don’t always have access to, hence our mind tends to justify eating them in excess. The problem is, it’s not just one meal, it’s a lot of different meals, parties, and pastries that people seem to always bring out during the holidays, especially in the workplace. I decided years ago that I was not going to let myself use the holidays as an excuse to gorge and become plump like a stuffed turkey. Personally, my biggest challenge used to be with sugar, and during this last month of the year, there are temptations everywhere. I can say I haven’t had sugar in over two years (I set a goal to get off it for three months for my 40th birthday and I felt so great I just kept going!). Here are five main tips to help you enjoy this month without expanding your waistline (that way you can get smaller size pants for Christmas instead of needing larger ones!). 1) Know that you have a mind, will, and intellect that can decide not to partake in every little fancy food that makes its way across your path. Just because it’s there doesn’t mean you have to eat it. A dog acts on impulse and just scarfs down whatever is there. You are not a dog, you can make wise decisions for the outcome you want and not just act on impulse. 2) Have balance – enjoy some foods and some say, “Not today.” This can cut down

on 50% of the calories you would normally consume at this time. 3) Make sure you exercise at least four times a week. With the extra holiday foods, if you exercise, you at least won’t gain. Of course if you have weight to lose, losing this month at least a few pounds is a better goal. However, it’s also a great accomplishment to not gain weight this month either. 4) When going to an event, fill up first on protein, fat, veggies, and nuts to resist eating the starchy carbohydrate foods. 5) Fill up on a glass of water or snack on some nuts or salad before you go to a party or dinner. That way, you aren’t starving when you get there. We tend to make worse choices when we are starving. I have learned not to put myself in that position. Eating healthy can be delicious when you know how to eat, so get some amazing Christmas cookie recipes and desserts the healthy delicious way on our website. Also be thinking about the new year, and keep us in mind to help you get healthy and fit. Samantha Taylor Fitness won the Small Business of the Year Award last year, and we have helped over 5,000 women in this community while growing into three locations: Wesley Chapel, Land O’ Lakes, and our newest location in Carrollwood with up to 50% off in pre-sales opening in December. We give you a nutrition plan, 30 minute workouts in a private studio for women, and accountability. The Cold and Flu Season is Here! Anne Childers, Staff Writer Dr. Michele Johnson-Towson is a boardcertified pediatrician with 26 years of experience in caring for children ages newborn to 21 years old. The doctor is encouraging patients to schedule now for flu shots. Vaccines are available and same-week appointments are possible. Dr. Johnson-Towson and her staff are dedicated to keeping patients both healthy and educated on changes in children’s healthcare. The live attenuated nasal flu spray vaccine is not recommended this year due to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) failing to prove it was adequate enough over the last 3 flu seasons to keep patients from contracting the influenza A (H1N1) type virus. Normally, it is recommended for patients ages 2 to 49 that are healthy without underlying medical problems. The flu shot, which contains coverage against the influenza A&B

strains, is available in proper doses for ages 6 months and up. Tampa Bay students have been back in school for several weeks, sharing germs right along with academics and sports. Be sure to call Pediatric Place of Tampa and schedule checkups and physicals to keep your whole family healthy. It is important for shots to be up-to-date and hearing and vision tests current so students are ready for learning and healthy playing. Pediatric Place of Tampa accepts all insurances as well as self-pay patients. New patients are always welcome! Pediatric Place of Tampa is conveniently located at 1338 W. Fletcher Avenue in Tampa. The cheerful, kid-friendly office is on the bus line, too. Call today at 813-264-2288 and schedule for protection against the flu season!

“Any Brand, Any Problem, Any Time” Anne Childers, Staff Writer

When Tampa Bay natives Dana and James Spears decided to open a business in 2006, they choose air conditioning, an always needed service in the Florida climate. “We felt there was a demand for an honest, reliable, customer service-orientated air conditioning business in the Tampa Bay area,” says Dana, who functions as Cornerstone’s business owner while husband James manages operations for the decade-old company. But the couple wasn’t satisfied to stop with only air-conditioning and heating. Now going into the 11th year in business, Cornerstone has added both plumbing and electrical maintenance and repair to the list of services offered. The entrepreneurs added plumbing repair and service to the extensive menu three years ago and brought electrical services on board two years ago. “We are a one-stop location for all your major home and business systems,” notes Dana. The growth and expansion of the Land O’ Lakes based business has provided nearly 60 jobs for local skilled technicians, with a fleet of 30 vehicles to serve the entire Tampa Bay area. Some of those jobs are staffed by Dana

and James’ own family. “We are fully family owned and operated,” says Dana. “Eight family members spanning three generations work together to deliver guaranteed services and products to our clients.” Additionally, this civic-minded couple gives back to the community, supporting local schools and charities annually while maintaining memberships in all local Chambers of Commerce. Office hours are Monday - Friday from 8:00am until 6:00pm, and all calls are answered personally by a dedicated staff member. Same day service is typical. For emergencies and after hours, Cornerstone maintains a 24/7 hotline. Cornerstone has scored the highest ratings on Angie’s List for the last 4 years along with the Bright House Business Award and a consistent A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau. Check the website at www.CornerstonePros.com for a full list of services and awards, and then make the only call you need to make at 813-948-5282 for complete home maintenance and repair!

The Most Magnificent Gift of All Continued from Page 1

were looking for a savior from the seed of a woman that would come to defeat the serpent who caused the fall of man and the loss of paradise, the Garden of Eden. When Jesus came to the Jordan River, he knew his time had come, and right at his 30th birthday he was baptized. John 1:29: “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin the world!” Jesus was that Lamb that they had been looking for. Isaac said to Abraham, “We have the wood for the fire, but where is the sacrifice?” Abraham said, “My son, God will provide it himself.” When Philip found Jesus, he went to tell Nathaniel. John 1:45: “We have found him of whom Moses wrote about in the law and about whom the prophets also wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” In a validation of Jesus, the Pharisees challenged him. John 8:14-18 “Even if I testify on my behalf, my testimony is valid, for I know where I came from and where I am going. But you have no idea where I came from and where I am going. You judge by human standards; I pass judgment on no one. But if I do judge, my decisions are right because I am not alone. I stand with the Father, who sent me. In your own Law it is written that the testimony of two men is valid. I am one who testifies for myself; my other witness is the Father, who sent me.” During the trial of Jesus, Pontius Pilate asked him, “Where you are from?” But Jesus gave him no answer. John 19:10-11: “‘Do you refuse to speak to me?’ said Pilate. ‘Don’t you realize I have the power to crucify you?’ Jesus answered, ‘You have no power over me if it were not given to you from above. Therefore, the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a greater sin.’” From then on, Pilate tried to set Jesus free, but the Jews kept shouting, “If you let this man go, you are no friend of Caesar!” Jesus was born in a very unique way as it was told in Genesis, Chapter 3, over 1,400 years before his birth through the seed of a woman. Isaiah 7:14: ”The Lord himself will give you a sign: behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and you shall call his name Emmanuel.” Mary was betrothed to Joseph before they came together, and she was found to be with child, the seed of the Holy Spirit, while traveling from Nazareth to Bethlehem. The word “Bethlehem” means house of bread, and you probably didn’t know that there are two Bethlehems. If you notice, it specifies the Bethlehem Ephrahah. This is where Rachel died giving birth to Benjamin, which was just outside Jerusalem where King Herod saw the wise men com-

ing and interrogated them, saying, “Where is the Messiah supposed to be born?” You never hear anything about the miracles of Jesus before he was 30. For the first 30 years of his life, he lived as a man among men, just as you and I, for a priest could not begin to teach until he was 30. King David did not begin to reign until he was 30. Joseph administrated over Egypt when was 30. When Jesus was anointed by John the Baptist, you never did hear anything about his miracles until he began his ministry, and where he quoted these very words in his hometown church of Galilee (Isaiah 61:1). Still today, in the three and a half years of his ministry, he turned the world upside down. Furthermore, it tells us that he would speak and teach in parables as King David said in Psalm 78:2-3: “I will open my mouth in a parable; I will utter dark sayings of old, which we have heard and known, as our fathers told us.” Matthew 27:3-7 tells how, during the trial of Christ, Judas was overwhelmed with a sense of guilt. Judas finally realized that he betrayed the son of God as they were preparing to crucify Jesus. Then as he went into the outskirts of the Temple where Jesus was being tried and the Sanhedrin was meeting, he said, “I’ve betrayed innocent blood,” and he threw down the 30 pieces of silver for the potter’s field (Psalm 22:16).

During a crucifixion, it was a standard practice to break their legs. Psalm 22:16: “The congregation of the wicked has enclosed me. They pierced my hands and my feet. They divided my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.” This was prophesied almost 1,000 years before Jesus was born. Psalm 34:22: “He guards all his bones. Not one of them is broken.” They broke the bones of the thieves on the right and the left of Jesus because Jesus was the Passover lamb, and they were never to break the bones of a Passover lamb. They didn’t break any of his bones just as the prophecies had said: “He guards my bones.” From end of the Old Testament until the New Testament starts with Matthew, there are about 400 years of prophecies about the Messiah that Jesus would come. Three quarters of the way through the Bible there should be a page that says there were 400 years between the Old Testament and The New Testament, which doesn’t begin until the birth of Jesus. We know from the Dead Sea Scrolls that these things were written before Jesus was born. So how could you fabricate, counterfeit, or manufacture the prophecies after 400 years went from Zechariah to Matthew where Jesus would be betrayed by a friend for 30 pieces of silver who would then throw it to the potter’s field into the house of the Lord? C.S. Lewis puts it this way: “A man who was merely a man that would do the sort of things that Jesus did wouldn’t be a great moral teacher. He’d be a lunatic on the level of a man who says he’s a poached egg or else he would be the devil of hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was and is the son of God or else he was a madman or something worse.” Someone else put it this way: “Christ was either a

conscious deceiver, deluded, or divine. He is a lunatic, liar, or Lord. There is no escaping these three options.” Jesus lived for thirty three and a half years among men, and he said, “I want to show you how to live. How to love each other. I’m not just going to show you how to turn the other cheek; I’m going to show you how it’s done.” And he did, through his trial. I’m going to show you how to love and forgive each other the way he forgave us, uttering his last words on the cross: “Forgive them Father, for they do not know what they are doing.” Why is it you hear people using his name in profanity so frequently? You never hear people get mad and hit their finger with a hammer and say, “Oh Buddha, Allah, Krishna!” or cite Mohammad’s name in damnation. Why is there a diabolical focus to specially scorn the name of Jesus? That in itself should tell you there’s a spiritual battle out there. The world should know who Jesus is, and he came to show us what the Father is like. He said in John 14:9: “Have I been with you so long you don’t know me, Philip?” Jesus came to trade places with us, for we are all under a death sentence because of our sin and our selfishness. Christ does not want to lose us. He loves us, for he said, “I will come and I will take the pen-

alty for your sin. I will not only take it, I will give you my strength. I’m going to be your substitute and trade places with you.” He said, “I will give you my goodness and I will take your badness. I will give you my strength and will take your weakness. I will give you my life and take your death. Give you might and peace and take your suffering and your misery.” HE IS OFFERING IT ALL AS A GIFT BY FAITH! Martin Luther said, “In his death, he sacrifices himself for our sins. In his resurrection, he is a conqueror. In his ascension, he is a king. In his intercession, he is a priest. He is everything that we need.” In every volume of this book, it is written. When we see Abraham with Isaac, we see Jesus. When we see Moses leading a nation from slavery, we see Jesus. When we see Joseph forgiving his brothers for mistreating him, we see Jesus. We see Jesus in Samson when he stretches out his arms to defeat the enemy of God’s people. We see Jesus in Gideon, defeating the enemy with his small group. When I open up the Bible, all I see is Jesus everywhere. This book is all about him, and he wants you to know who he is! God became a man, and his name is Jesus. KNOWING HIM IS EVERLASTING LIFE! Publisher of the Gazettes (Ambassador for Christ)

When a metal flower pot left an ugly rust stain on my painted, stamped concrete lanai, I was sure the finish was ruined. Every product I checked warned against use on painted concrete. I gave up and went shopping for a large plastic flower pot to hide the stain. Then Rob Harris, owner of Clean Rite Pressure Cleaning used his skills and special products to completely and safely remove the rust stain and restore my concrete floor. I could not be better satisfied. I recommend Clean Rite for all your pressure cleaning challenges and routine care. — Anne Childers, Staff Writer, Dunndeal Gazette
