General Manager’s Report It is with great pleasure that I present the 2011 Music SA Annual Report, detailing information on our programs and activities in a particularly challenging year. Following a major re-branding in 2010, the company continued a program of expansion and profile building in 2011, with improved marketing and communication mechanisms, the development of new projects such as Bands On Track and Southern Exposure, and most notably the endorsement of a Registered Training Organisation. Through this period of change, it has been the organisations core projects that have provided the bedrock.
The Music SA website is nationally recognized as the country’s foremost industry website, an online magazine style website that truly is a one stop shop for South Australian music. Our accredited Music Industry Training program and Vocational Education Training programs continue to be the best in South Australia, with current industry professionals providing project based, industry relevant professional development opportunities for artists and practitioners alike. Music SA’s Industry Development Officer is now established as a key resource for the South Australian industry, providing consultancy and direct advice to SA artists in areas such as business planning, touring, marketing, management and promotion. Music SA has continued to deliver the most comprehensive and successful secondary school music project in the country, a program which has now been running continuously for over 20 years. We are taking a growing leadership role in the sector, lobbying for and providing advocacy on behalf of the South Australian Music industry and artists to local and state Governments, businesses, stakeholders and the national music community. Music SA is increasingly being identified as a peak organization for the SA Music Industry, and it is a role that we have embraced through our membership of and representation on the executive committees of the Australian Music Industry Network (AMIN), Service Skills SA sub-committee for the Arts and the Arts Industry Council. We will continue to work throughout 2012 to raise the profile of the sector and explore opportunities for artist and industry development. The success of Music SA comes from the commitment and dedication of its people. Our staff and volunteers continue to give of themselves day in, day out often in stressful circumstances and for little reward. I can only be grateful for the privilege to work with such an amazing team, and I look forward to another fruitful and challenging year in 2012.
Daniel Randell MUSIC SA General Manager

OUR VISION To be a leader of “next practice” development of the contemporary music industry, and the delivery of industry skills.
OUR MISSION To provide training, education and development opportunities in all aspects of the contemporary music industry, with a specific focus on youth. Music SA approaches sector development through a holistic program of education, training, and development starting at secondary school age onwards. This includes formal and non-formal education, advice, consultancy, events, performance opportunities, promotion and support. Music SA receives major funding from the South Australian Government through Arts SA as well as project funding from the Australasian Performing Right Association (APRA) to support its program delivery. Music SA is grateful for the support it receives from Coopers Brewery, Kelly & Co, Fowler’s Live, Fat Trax and CityDub who are major sponsors of the company. The Company is administered by a Board of Directors with office-bearers comprising a Chair, Secretary and Treasurer. Company finances are reviewed by an independent auditor on an annual basis. The Board is responsible for the employment of a General Manager who has the responsibility of day to day financial, resource and staff management.

Music Industry Training Program Music SA has been delivering Accredited Training in Music Business since 1997, originally under the Auspices of Ausmusic Ltd and later in partnership with Radio Adelaide. The objectives of the Training programs are to provide opportunities for artists and practitioners to gain hands on, industry relevant skills in music business and performance, and to develop pathways into the music industry. The training program is managed by the Music SA Training Coordinator Nev de Boar. After an extensive planning and implementation process delivered throughout 2010, Music SA became a Registered Training Organisation in its own right in January 2011, with the following qualifications on its scope of registration: • CERTIFICATE I IN CREATIVE INDUSTRIES
The Course Coordinator Nev de Boar has been a key driver in the implementation of this project and we acknowledge the outstanding work he has done over 2010/11 to bring what has been a long term goal of the organization to fruition. Whilst the established of an RTO within the organization creates significant additional administrative requirements, it has created substantial opportunities in terms of the ability of the organization to tailor Music Business training programs to the needs of the industry and the needs of students. With the continuing emphasis on Vocation Training within the Secondary School system, Music SA is now able to deliver full qualification in Music Business and Music Industry Skills to students who can gain credit from the program towards their SACE. This has allowed us to bring two separate streams to our training, that being Vocational Education Training (VET) for School Students, and skills based Music Industry Training to the wider sector (short course program). As with all Music SA programs, the key to the success of our Training is that it is industry based – in that all Music SA trainers are current Industry participants and practitioners, and all programs are project based so students are getting practical skills in their chosen areas. As we say in our promotional literature – learning about the industry from people who are actually DOING IT!
• CERTIFICATE II IN MUSIC • CERTIFICATE III IN MUSIC BUSINESS • CERTIFICATE III IN TECHNICAL PRODUCTION • CERTIFICATE IV IN MUSIC BUSINESS
Through the registration process a number of initiatives were introduced to both support and complement training delivery including a formalized industry consultation program, continuous improvement register, student and staff handbooks, training code of practice and training validation processes.
6
In 2011 Music SA delivered the following full year VET programs to 47 Students from 20 Secondary Schools: • CERTIFICATE I IN CREATIVE INDUSTRIES (LIVE SOUND & LIGHTING) • CERTIFICATE II IN MUSIC (SONGWRITING & PERFORMANCE) • CERTIFICATE II IN MUSIC (STUDIO RECORDING) • CERTIFICATE III IN MUSIC BUSINESS (BAND MANAGEMENT)
VET Programs were delivered from the Music SA Training room and Nexus Theatre, with industry placements at Fat Trax Recording Studio, Fowler’s Live, Northern Sound System and various events. The Music SA Short Course program delivered units of the Certificate IV In Music Business to 54 participants through the following 8 week programs: • MUSIC BUSINESS ESSENTIALS • MUSIC EVENT MANAGEMENT • ARTIST MANAGEMENT
As such, Music SA is working towards the ongoing implementation of a new program for 2012 which will be aimed to meet the skills needs of the industry whilst meeting the demand for national accredited qualifications at an intermediate level. This program will include the extension of the full year VET program to 5 streams to include a full year technical production program, our first full time Certificate IV Program to provide pathways for students beyond Certificate III level, and a full year non-accredited short course program.
• PROMOTING YOUR MUSIC (MARKETING) • TOURING YOUR BAND • INTRODUCTION TO STUDIO RECORDING
Music SA receives funding for our Industry Training program from the South Australian Government through Arts SA.
In general we have found that participants in the short course programs are coming to Music SA looking for specific skills relating to the Music Industry such as managing their band. As such there tends to be a minimal focus on the qualification gained or the ‘piece of paper’ – they are looking for skills, networks and experience. Conversely, the driving factor behind those wishing to participate in longer terms programs such as the VET stream is for the attainment of qualifications.

MusicSA.com.au
Launched in July 2003 with the support of Arts SA, the MusicSA website (www.musicsa.com.au) is the only complete South Australian website designed for - and by - the local music industry. A flagship project of the company, the website has continued to exhibit significant growth in content, visitation, and brand awareness over the years, and is currently attracting an average of nearly 30,000 unique visitors monthly.
8
A main factor is the website’s appeal and utility is its unique combination of roles: • a s a source of information about the industry (much like a version of online street press), with articles on events and gigs, news on local artists and the scene in general, reviews, radio airplay charts and more; • a s the host of the only online Artist Directory that exclusively features South Australian bands and musicians, with over 1000 individual pages that contain biographies, mp3s, galleries, gig details & contact information; Venue and Music Business directories are also key elements of the site’s content;
In its entirety, the Music SA website is one of a kind, with scope not seen in other organizational or commercial sites. Dedicated to the promotion of SA music artists, the support of industry practitioners, and the nurturing of the South Australian music scene in general, the website is the ultimate resource for South Australian music. It is SA music, online.
The Music SA Website is funded by the South Australian Government through Arts SA.
• a s a resource for musicians searching for new opportunities, materials, courses and contacts which can help further their careers in the industry This one-stop-shop on the local scene is managed/ updated on a daily basis by the Music SA Website Coordinator. Listed Artists, Venues and Businesses also have direct access to update their pages, with regular additions of their own news, gigs and special events. Website content covers a broad range of musical genres, and addresses all different skill levels of musicians, from the emerging to the established and export-ready acts. As a tool for the industry itself, the site encourages contributions in content, questions and suggestions, and maintains a dialogue with its visitors through a weekly newsletter and social networking. Combined with a rapidly expanding social media presence (with Music SA pages on Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, YouTube and Google+), the website is an invaluable means of showcasing the state’s industry not only to visitors from SA, but also those across the country and around the world.
9
Industry Development Officer In March 2007, under agreement with the Government of South Australia through Arts SA, Music SA appointed an Industry Development Officer on a 0.5 basis. This appointment enabled Music SA to expand its industry development activities for South Australian artists and practitioners. The establishment of such a function within the organization has allowed Music SA to become a key support organization for the SA Music industry. The role works both directly with artists to provide advice and support as well as developing projects to provide up-skilling and performance opportunities for artists. Through the role Music SA is able to act as a conduit for the industry to both local and state government to raise the profile of the SA Music Industry. The Music SA Industry Development program is now well established as a vital component of the company’s strategic approach to sector development. Reporting to the General Manager, the Industry Development Officer works across projects and departments with a high level of integration. The key to the success of this program has been the Industry Development Officer, Gordon Andersen. An experienced event manager and artist manager, Gordon has brought a level of professionalism to the role which is matched only by his passion for the industry and its success. In 2011 the Music SA Industry Development Officer provided direct support to over 60 South Australian artists. This included both formal meetings and consultancy sessions as well as informal advice (phone calls, emails) and requests for information. The broad range of requests for advice and information showed that there is a real lack of understating from artists in regards to many key areas of music business, with Marketing and Business Planning being examples. The Music SA Industry Development Officer provided consultation with a range of stakeholders including local and state government, collection agencies, educational institutions, commercial enterprises and other non government not-for-profit agencies. Through these relationships Music SA has been pleased to be able to assist in furthering the understanding of the size and scope of the SA Music Industry and the sector needs.
10
The Music SA Industry Development Officer actively participates in forums, conferences and events both as a representative of the SA Industry and to provide input as a guest speaker or judge. These events in 2011 included the Fuse Festival and Conference, Bigsound Music Industry Conference, APRA Forums, Carclew Youth Arts ‘Off The Couch’ Program, National Campus Battle of the Bands, Adelaide Fringe and more. Importantly, the Industry Development Officer provides advice and support for volunteers, interns and trainees within the organization. This both builds capacity for the organization and allows us to directly develop a pool of talented industry workers. It is our desire to expand on this program of personal career development to establish a formal business incubator where young entrepreneurs can be nurtured through the development of their creative enterprises. Music SA was pleased to partner with Arts SA in early 2011 to appoint an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (ATSI) Music Industry Officer. The program was delivered as a six month pilot project, with the successful applicant participating in a program of professional development training to facilitate an advice and support service for ATSI musicians. The ATSI Music Industry Officer participated in structured training at Music SA including accredited Music Business programs, mentoring and professional development.
Based on the experiences of the pilot project, Music SA was pleased to partner with Arts SA in the second half of the year to create a Music Industry Development Traineeship, commencing in September of 2011. This traineeship provided a professional development opportunity for an ATSI Artist to develop a knowledge and understanding of the contemporary music industry in SA, the broader national industry, identify industry networks and develop the skills necessary to assist local artists. The Traineeship was structured around a combination of accredited training, formal and informal mentoring as well as the opportunity to participate in key industry events and seminars. The success of this Traineeship has resulted in Music SA extending the placement into 2012. Project management and development have become a key component of the role, with the Industry Development Officer managing past projects including Coopers Alive, Louder Than Words and Sounds Live, and continuing to support internal fundraising events (Music SA Quiz Night). With the Coopers Alive Project at the end of a 3 year agreement between ABAF, Coopers and Music SA in 2010, a considerable amount of work has been done in partnership with Coopers Brewery to reposition the project for the future. With ABAF funding no longer available there has been a significant impact on the capacity of the project and it was decided that a new model be developed. The Industry Development Officer has worked closely with Coopers Brewery and their Advertising Agency KWP! on a new model for Coopers Alive which will be launched in 2012.

New project development has been a feature of 2011 for the Industry Development program. In addition to Coopers Alive, The Industry Development Officer worked in partnership with the Media Resource Centre on the development of a new music video project (see CLIP IT!). There have also been a number of discussions with key stakeholders including the Adelaide City Council and APRA on new music opportunities. In late 2011, Music SA was approached by the Clipsal 500 team to discuss opportunities for SA Artists to perform at the Clipsal 500 After Race concerts. The result was ‘Bands On Track’, an SA-only showcase event for the Thursday night after race concert, and a competition for SA artists to perform as the opening act on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday night after race concerts. Commencing in January, Bands On Track is an exciting new project which will provide exposure to some of SA’s most promising artists in front of a huge crowd.
The position of Music SA Industry Development Officer is funded the South Australian Government through Arts SA.

Contemporary Music Pathways Program The CMP program has been a flagship program for Music SA for over 20 years. Designed as a long term artist residency, the program provides both practical skills and mentoring for aspiring musicians in some of the states most disadvantaged schools. Coordinated by the Music SA General Manager, the CMP Program places professional musicians in disadvantaged schools to deliver workshops on a weekly basis for the entire year, with no cost to the school or students. The musicians work with young people on areas including ensemble rock performance, song writing, music technology, production, multi-media, dance & electronic music, DJ and rap skills and introduction to music industry/business skills. The artists act as mentors to students providing a positive role model who the students can look up to. The participating students are typically from disadvantaged backgrounds with substantial behaviour problems, poor social skills, self esteem issues and learning difficulties. The program is designed to assist youth in disadvantaged schools, remote and regional schools where there would otherwise not be an appropriate contemporary music program available to students, and in particular where students socio-economic circumstances may otherwise prohibit them from gaining music tuition. This is a particular need in regional and remote schools where resources are often not available for ongoing music programs, and the students miss out altogether. The musician delivering the program is not designed to replace the teacher. This is a particular feature of the program and one of the main reasons for its success – in that the musician is not identified by the students as being a teacher or authority figure, and as such the musicians are able to gain a unique rapport with the students participating. A teacher must be present at all times and the duty of care remains with the school. Music SA was pleased to deliver the CMP program to 5 Secondary Schools in 2011: • • • • •
Bowden Brompton High School (Thebarton) Naracoorte High School Le Fevre High School (Semaphore South) Ocean View College (Taparoo) Lameroo Regional School
The CMP program delivered over 300 hours of direct workshops and mentoring to over 90 young people. A further 8 performances were facilitated through the program to an audience of over 2000 young people. As always, we were fortunate to have the involvement of a number of very experienced, professional musicians for the program in 2011. Participating artists included those with a long association with the program such as Dale Taylor and Myles Mayo, and those fresh to the program in 2011 such as Corey Noll, Mark Dean and Luke Hancock. It is always inspiring to see the level to which the mentoring artists give of themselves both professionally and personally to the program, often committing themselves well beyond the allotted time and bringing genuine passion to their delivery. The CMP program has provided a real impact on student engagement and retention at the participating schools. All schools reported an increase in attendance and retention, particularly for students identified as being ‘at risk’ and the performance outcomes for the program were of a high level. Over 20 years the CMP program has met a need within secondary schools to establish and support Contemporary Music programs, provide professional development for teachers and engage and support the development of young people. The success of this program can bee seen in the number of schools that now have established contemporary music programs as a result of their participating in CMP and the broader acceptance of Contemporary Music programs as a valid component of the school curriculum.
The CMP program is funded by the South Australian Government through Arts SA.

Clip It! Music Video Project In 2011 the Media Resource Centre and Music SA partnered to deliver the Clip It! music video initiative. Coordinated for Music SA by the IDO Gordon Andersen, Clip It! partnered eight of South Australia’s rising music artists with eight of SA’s brightest local filmmaking teams. With valuable support from major sponsor Canon Australia, the initiative saw filmmakers produce music videos that showcased the high caliber of Adelaide’s up-and-coming talent (on both sides of the camera).

Projects In Development For 2012 Music SA has a number of new projects in development for 2012 including a new look Coopers Alive Project and Bands on Track @ The Clipsal 500. Music SA is working towards a new partnership with the Laneways Festival to provide performance opportunities for SA artists at the SA leg of the festival to be held in early February. We hope to extend beyond the performance aspect of the partnership to investigate ways that the festival can have a meaningful impact on industry development in South Australia.
Music SA is developing a new showcase project for the Southern Suburbs in partnership with Carclew Youth Arts and the City of Onkaparinga Council. Under the banner of ‘Southern Exposure’, Music SA will run a series of live events in 2012 which will focus on audience development and career development for artists in the Southern Metropolitan region. Other projects ‘in the works’ include a workshop/panel series, an all ages live music initiative and partnerships with some major events and festivals. Watch this space!

Sponsors And Supporters Music SA has been fortunate to receive the strong support of a number of key sponsors and funding agencies in 2011. We are grateful for the ongoing support we have received from the Government of South Australian through Arts SA, and recognize the importance of the funding available direct to Artists through the Contemporary Music program. Music SA has a continuing relationship with Coopers Brewery through the Coopers Alive project and the Coopers Gig guide on musicsa.com.au. Coopers is an outstanding supporter of live music in South Australia, and we look forward to working together on the new look Coopers Alive in 2012. APRA/AMCOS has been a long supporter of Music SA, and a key supporter of the industry nationally. We are grateful for the support we receive from APRA both financially and in-kind, always willing to provide information whether it be advice on technical issues regarding copyright collection or providing a speaker for an event or workshop (thanks Matt!) Fat Trax Recording Studio and City Dub Duplication are both a key stakeholder in the South Australian music industry and a strong supporter in its development. Fat Trax and City Dub have been sponsoring and supporting our activity for over 5 years. Thank you to David, Michelle and all the team for your ongoing support. Music SA could not succeed in its work without the support of the local industry. Fowler’s Live has been a great friend to Music SA, supporting our events and activities, giving us use of their venue, and acting as an advocate for the organization to the broader music and business community. We thank Peter and Michelle, and all the crew for their support. Kelly & Co Lawyers have been supporting Music SA for over 8 years, through professional legal advice and expertise. We are grateful for the commitment Luke has given the organization and look forward to fruitful years together. Lastly we acknowledge the support we receive from the South Australian Music Industry, Artists, Practitioners and broader stakeholders. Whether it is providing prizes (and audience!) for our fundraising, or advocating on behalf of Music SA and the SA Industry, it is your passion that drives us.
