COLOURS | NOVEMBER 2013

From The President Dear Members, I was pleased to inform members at the AGM that much has been achieved within the Club over the past year and that for the first time in some years the Club achieved a surplus budget. I take this opportunity to congratulate all Board members, the General Manager, Function Manager, Senior Chef, Chief Steward and all our staff for their tremendous effort to achieve that result. I congratulate CAPT Geoff Walsh and LTCOL Peter Neuhous on their re-election to the Board and FLTLT Alex Cave on his election. Ms Elizabeth Connelly departs the Board after 5 years service and I particularly thank her for a job well done as Chairperson of the DAG (Decor & Arts Group) in overseeing the complete internal redecoration of the Club. The overall ambience of the Club has been greatly enhanced by their work. LTCOL Sandra Turner recently stood down from the Board for personal reasons thereby creating a casual vacancy for 1 year which will be filled by the Board at its first meeting after the AGM. Significant work being undertaken in repairs and maintenance to the Club House. Lathe and plaster ceilings of the Entrance and Air Force Room have been repaired with funding assistance from the Adelaide City Council; the Billiard Room has been repainted and its tables and furniture re-furbished; the external wall to the Billiard Room underpinned and repairs to its brick work and a lot of our air-conditioning upgraded. The AGM overwhelmingly approved a call of $50 this financial year and $50 next financial year on all members (except honorary members) to assist in the financing of re-surfacing the car park and reinforced concrete driveways, and it is planned that this work be undertaken early in the new year.

Club Directory The Club has engaged architect firm Flightpath to prepare a Conservation Management Plan. Benefits of the plan include that it will be easier to raise funds for restoration works to the heritage listed part of our building and with the plan in place to obtain tax deductable status. In recent months members have enjoyed a wide range of Club events including a Battle of Gettysburg Dinner, Rabbie Burns Supper, very interesting guest speaker breakfasts with Leader of the Opposition Steven Marshall, SA’s own Federal Independent Senator Nick Xenophon, a Lunch with Police Commissioner Gary Burns, and a well attended Presidents Dinner in the company of 7 of our Past Presidents. Our monthly Wine Lunches have been very successful with the D’Arenberg lunch in October booked out and this year we are re-introducing the Annual Trafalgar Dinner with the Navy Band in support. Members support for all the Club events ensures that this important aspect of Club life is maintained. I remind members of our reciprocal membership with the Cruising Yacht Club of South Australia (CYCSA). They have a marvellous facility and recommend to you their Sunday Brunches and Lunches as an idyllic setting overlooking the water. Membership Recruitment is the biggest challenge for the Club in the year ahead. The Board recognises that our existing members are our most valuable resource in attracting new membership and I encourage members to be active in this regard. For those of you who I will not see in the Club in coming months I wish you a very merry and safe Festive Season. I also encourage you to consider contributing to the staff gratuity fund. All staff except the General Manager receive a distribution each year prior to Christmas and any donation is greatly appreciated by the staff.

GENERAL MANAGER

From The General Manager

What’s New At The Club?

The Club has enjoyed strong trading conditions during the winter months and early spring bookings are also encouraging. We are continuing to attract new groups that meet regularly at the club to conduct their meetings and stay on for meals. The Club is an ideal venue for hosting committee meetings and special interest group meetings as we can offer rooms, food and beverage and even accommodation for your interstate visitors that you can sign in. To organise meetings at the Club, contact Mark Jennings or Sharon Allen. Works around the Club Over the past several months the Club has conducted ceiling repairs to the Air Force Room and Hallway. We used the services of a heritage specialist named Andrew Steinkopf (Building Conservation Technology) who specialises in using an injection solution that re-affixes the lathe and plaster back onto the ceiling joists. The cost was $4,730 and the Adelaide City Council provided 50% of the cost under the Heritage Incentives Scheme. The external billiard room wall had developed large cracks and it was found that stormwater and sewerage drains were badly cracked and causing the ground to become unstable. The pipes were replaced, underpinning was done and the bricks are to be replaced. The total project cost will be about $11,000. Other project work being considered includes installing a ceiling into the Long Tan room, air conditioning on level 1, plumbing repair work on level 1, and the club replaced the analogue TVs in the accommodation rooms with digital TVs.

The car park and driveways will be repaired early in 2014. We will aim to start the project in January to minimize the impact on members. Once works commences, access to the club will be extremely limited. We will advise members by email when the work is due to commence and the date of re-opening the car park. Staff As we enter the Christmas period staff look forward to a holiday break and the distribution of funds from the Staff Gratuity Fund. This fund is a formal trust administered by appointed trustees on behalf of members for staff as beneficiaries. It is audited each year. Donations are greatly appreciated by the staff as the club does not pay bonuses or accept tips.

HOT BREAKFAST VOUCHER When members and guests book accommodation rooms at the club they are now offered a hot breakfast voucher for $25 redeemable at Bocelli.

Obituary

FLTLT CHARLES LANCELOT HARGRAVE Club President: 1975 -1977 Born: 13/2/1919 Died: 29/8/2013 (age 94) FLTLT Charles Hargrave joined the Club in 1945 and was a passionate Club member for over six decades. In fact Charles was in the Club with his regular group only a few days before his death. Born in 1919 Charles grew up in Adelaide and in the 1930s he joined Charles Birks Department store as a clerk and studied accountancy while working. In July 1940 Charles joined the RAAF and became an Instructor. He was stationed at Somers Vic, Parafield, Point Cook, Camden, Narromine and various other bases. He flew Tiger Moths, Demons, Mosquitos, Beauforts and Avro Ansons. Charles completed RAAF service in January 1946. After the War Charles became the accountant for Charles Birks Department store in Rundle Street. He went on to become Company Secretary and then the Managing Director of David Jones in Adelaide and at the time he ran the most successful department store in Australia. Charles joined the club when it was located in Grenfell Street and he immediately became a frequent member. He established a regular weekly group of four members: Bob Jaunay (deceased), L C Miller (deceased) and James Bowen, who is the last of the group still remaining with us and still attends the club. In 1975 Charles was elected as Club President at a time when new associate categories were being established for members’ wives and sons and the property on Angas Street was being purchased. In 1988 Charles helped to establish the Staff Gratuity Fund at the Club with the creation of a Trust Deed. Together with Bob Jaunay (deceased) and Robert Darwent (deceased and later replaced by Keith Bleechmore) the trustees managed the trust fund on behalf of the members as donors and the staff as beneficiaries, for over 20 years. Charles met Betty in Narromine in 1942 and in 1945 they married and had three children Charles, Judy and Wendy. Charles became a grandfather with three grandchildren and one great grandchild.

A JOURNEY OF RECIPROCAL CLUBS Indeed one of the joys of being a member of the Naval Military & Air Force Club is the reciprocal relationship with other clubs around Australia and distant parts of the world. I would like to share one of my favourite journeys, from Adelaide visiting Canberra, Penang, Chennai and finishing up in Colombo. After leaving our magnificent Club in Adelaide, a very worthy stopover is the Commonwealth Club (since 1954), Yarralumla, Canberra. Make sure to have a room overlooking Lake Burley Griffin and enjoy early morning walks amongst the architectural array of embassies. Dining is excellent and fine for lone travellers, often amongst prominent politicians. Canberra is always a great place to explore and both the Australian National Gallery and Parliament House are within walking distance. Next stop is the exotic island of Penang in Malaysia to experience a favourite of many, the Penang Club (since 1868). Located in the World Heritage site of George Town, the Club is within walking distance of the historical monuments and the lively street life with its delicious local foods. A cherished part of the Penang Club is the outdoor bar and dining area overlooking the Straits of Malacca where once the 1914 Battle of Penang would have been in view – today you are more likely to be spotting dolphins, sea otters and fishing boats with Butterworth in the distant landscape. Often it is the spot to enjoy a tropical storm or an exquisite sunset. Adjacent to the outdoor bar is a sparkling blue pool to cool off in. There are more dining and recreation areas inside and an interesting library.

On to the east coast of India to Chennai arriving in the dark of night to stay at the magnificent and elite 1832 Madras Club. It is the second oldest surviving club in India and overlooks the Adyar River. The comfortable and spacious rooms offer the elegance of past eras. Superb dining and bar areas, set in the beautiful architecture have hosted royalty over the centuries. There is a walking track around the garden, the crystal clear pool is ideal for early morning laps and keep an eye out for cobras that live on the riverbank. The final leg of the journey is to Sri Lanka’s capital Colombo to stay at the alluring 1936 Colombo Swimming Club. The spacious outdoor grounds provide sports facilities including a hundred foot swimming pool and a place where everyone likes to gather for cocktails. Eating happens in the dining areas both inside and out - Ceylonese food is deliciously spicy with plenty of coconut. Try the riceflour and coconut hoppers. Sleeping in a four poster bed under mosquito netting, in one of the large and beautifully appointed rooms, is an experience. It is joyful to wake in the morning to a view of the bright blue Indian Ocean with the over-crowded trains that run along the seafront all the way to Galle. Colombo is a bustling, interesting city and where the architecture of Geoffrey Bawa can be studied. Through exploring our reciprocal clubs there is great opportunity to discover the unique individual histories, architecture and cultural heritage of magnificent cities with the benefits of welcoming surroundings and very reasonable tariffs of our clubs.

On Saturday 27 April 2013, we were fortunate enough to be hosted by Mark Jennings and his team for our wedding at the Naval, Military and Air Force Club. We chose this location in part due to the beautiful building and picturesque garden setting, and partly thanks to our careers as Officers in the Royal Australian Navy and Air Force. Whilst we were not looking for a full ceremonial style wedding, we were very happy that our party was granted an experience normally only afforded to those who have served. Our day began with Nicola and her bridesmaids getting ready in the north facing suite with a view onto the garden and arriving guests. The ceremony was held in the garden which proved to be secluded and intimate and fortunately the weather held out. At the conclusion of the ceremony guests were entertained with music, champagne and canapĂŠs in the garden while the bridal party had photos on the grounds. A three course dinner was served in the main dining room with dancing in the adjoining room until late in the evening.

Ben & Nicola

The day was idyllic. From the professionalism of all the staff to the presentation of the grounds and rooms to the boundless willingness to meet all of our requests and pre-empt those we hadn’t even thought of, there was nothing more that we could have hoped from the Club for our big day. We initially decided to have our wedding at the Club thanks to the delightful first impression made by Mark Jennings. In that first meeting, he imparted on us the importance our hopes for the day were to him and we knew this would play a large part in the success of the event. This desire to fulfill all our dreams was carried through the months preceding the wedding and was demonstrated commendably on the day. Every detail of the day was conducted with a military precision, now rarely seen in the military, and ensured a seamless sequence of events. Mark worked closely with our Master of Ceremonies, our musicians, our photographers and ourselves with a masterful choreography. He was most ably supported by his charming and friendly staff who treated every guest as a dignitary ensuring an enjoyable evening was had by all.

We were both completely overwhelmed by the quality of the event that was put together by the Club and have been recommending it to friends and work colleagues alike. We would like to thank everyone from the Club for making our wedding truly perfect and look forward to future events there.

Thursday 7th November 2013

Wednesday 13th November 2013

The ATSI war memorial was funded largely by the local community along with financial support from the Australian Government. Indigenous Australians have served Australia in every conflict since the Boer War through to current deployments today. Memorials such as this are important in order of educating Australians of the sacrifices of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, honouring their contributions. We welcome MAJ Ian Smith who will offer an overview of the memorial’s significance and discuss the proceedings of the dedication.

The Knappstein family began making wine in South Australia’s Clare Valley in 1894. A third generation vigneron Tim began his career at the family owned Stanley Wine Company.

Book Club hears of Afghani Women’s Plight: Nadine Williams writes. The Naval, Military and Air Force Club’s monthly book club gained insight into the plight of women in Afghanistan when Afghani-born woman, Reyhana Akhy, attended as a special guest. Reyhana was invited by one of our members for the club’s discussion on the gripping novel A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini which exposes the powerlessness and ill-treatment of women in Afghanistan.

Another member brought a retired physician to help our comments on “We Need To Talk about Kevin”

The author relates the lives and conditions of three generations of Afghani women before, during and after the Taliban occupation.

She has since joined. “The Great Gatsby” is our next book. To stimulate discussion and interest the presenter is also showing the 1974 movie version.

Reyhana, told club members that the storyline in A Thousand Splendid Suns truly reflected women’s suffering and suppression and that nothing has changed for women in Afghanistan. She told us she was happy that there were Australian women who cared about the lack of human rights for women in her homeland. “The pains are not going away for Afghani women,’’ wrote Reyhana in a note of thanks after the event.

The book is a stimulus and our conversations extend over lunch with much delight

Reyhana’s gentleness in sharing of experiences enlightened us all and helped us achieve a deeper understanding of the situation of Afghani women living in Australia.and the meaning of the book.

YOU are most welcome to attend

The Book Club meets on the last Friday of each month. Our year concludes in November with a poetry session which is a particularly happy event. This year each presenter is trying to extend the interest matter of the book. Rehyana’s vist was one such endeavour.

SNOOKER & BILLIARDS REPORT On the 6 August 2013 both of our billiard tables were reclothed and new English cushion rubbers and pockets were installed by Mr Greg Saulius who has been maintaining our tables for several years. The cloth is Strachan 6811 30 oz of championship standard and was obtained with the rubbers by Mr Frank Dewens Vice President of the Australian Billiards & Snooker Council. The renovations to the interior of the Billiard room are now complete with the re-upholstering of the three benches, new curtains, stools, tables, cupboards, wall painting and the provision of some new honour boards including the results of the Challen Kerr Trophy between our Club and The Adelaide Club, and all the boards are now up to date. Our thanks must go to the President and the Club’s Board, the General Manager, the Decor and Arts Sub-Committee and the members of the Billiards & Snooker Committee. During the course of the re-clothing it was ascertained that both billiard tables were made in 1912 by Alcocks of Melbourne and were made of blackwood.

It is not an absolute pre-requisite to have read the book but it does help!
