COLOURS | MARCH 2014

From The President Dear Members, Welcome back to the Club for 2014. I hope 2014 proves a healthy and prosperous year for members and look forward to your attendance at the club in coming months. Your Board is excited to be delivering a number of new initiatives in 2014 which will enhance your membership. Work on replacing all paved surfaces to the Club grounds commenced at the end of January. I thank the membership for supporting the project. A comprehensive Member Survey is being promulgated to members which is intended to be a cornerstone in the preparation by the Board of a Strategic Plan for the Club for the next five years. Flightpath Architects Pty Ltd have been commissioned to prepare a comprehensive Conservation Management Plan for the Club with the aim of identifying works that are required to protect or maintain the heritage components of the site including estimated costing and to enable the Club to establish a Trust for tax deductible funds through the National Trust of South Australia. I am pleased to record the great success of a number of recent Club functions - two highlights being the return to our social calendar of the Battle of Trafalgar Dinner on 26 October which was booked out and the ever popular Melbourne Cup Luncheon which was attended by over 120 members and guests. Attendance at our monthly wine lunches has increased significantly with several towards the end of 2013 also booked out. We can look forward to Mollydooker wines in March and Greenock Creek in April.

Club Directory A mid-year finance briefing will be held for members on 11 March 2014 at 1130am in the Imperial Room. All members are welcome to attend. I take this opportunity to commend to all members our annual Celebrate the Australian Army Dinner on 1 March. This dinner is open to all club members who are encouraged to bring along guests to join current and former serving members of the Australian Army in celebrating within a traditional Army Mess format. I hope to see many of you patronising our Club and enjoying functions and a dining experience with family and friends that only your Club can offer. ‘Pro Aris Et Focis’

St Georges Day Dinner

Mother’s Day Lunch

Come celebrate the Feast of St George this year at the club and show everyone else how the English do it (not that it’s a competition with St Patricks day of course – and not that you have to be English to attend). See Page 09 for more.

Why not spoil your Mother on this special day and have her indulge in the excellent food and service the Club offers at this very popular annual Luncheon. See Page 14 for more.

Schnitty and Quiz Night

Penfolds Dinner

We have transformed our traditional quiz night with a more casual approach, offering guests chicken or beef schnitzels with a selection of toppings or sauce as the prelude for our annual quiz night. See Page 16 for more.

Enjoy a selection of Penfolds wines including a taste of Grange matched by our Club Chef. See Page 16 for more.

GENERAL MANAGER

From The General Manager

What’s New At The Club?

Welcome back to the first edition of Colours for 2014. I hope members and their families had an enjoyable Christmas and New Year. Over the break, the Club conducted a number of works including steam cleaning carpets, painting in the kitchen, a variety of repair work and we prepared for the car park resurfacing project. The project commenced on 29 January and should finish by 7 February. So it is potentially completed or almost completed by the time Colours reaches members. Staff After 10 years of service with the Club, Sharon Allen has tendered her resignation to pursue other interests and opportunities. In 2013 Sharon completed a Bachelors Degree in Behavioural Science and Sharon will be utilising her skills in a new career direction commencing with youth work. We all wish her very well in her new career. Sharon’s helpfulness and knowledge of the Club and its members will be sorely missed by all of us. Tegan Adamson has headed off overseas for up to six months. I know members join me in wishing her a wonderful overseas trip and a safe return back to the Club later in the year. Recent new staff members include Kate, Laura, Chui-ki and Andre. Awards The 2013 Staff Awards were presented by the President on 18 December 2013. The award winners for 2013 were as follows:

On Thursday 10 October 2013 the golf group of our Club descended on Melbourne Savage Club for the annual golf event.

The Melbourne Savage Club was formed in 1894. Located in Bank Place Melbourne its entrance is a discreet red door in a lane way opposite a vibrant pub. It’s an exclusive club will 550 members. Previous members included Sir Robert Menzies who was President of the Club from 1947 to 1962. Professor Geoffrey Blainey held the chair from 1991 to 1994. The current President is Hon Judge Michael Kelly.

VISIT TO RECIPROCAL CLUBS IN MELBOURNE

The tour commenced in the traditional way with dinner at the Savage club. On this occasion the President MAJ Marc Ockenden and the Club’s General Manager Stephen Diamond attended the dinner as part of a tour of reciprocal clubs in Melbourne involving the RACV, Kelvin Club and the Melbourne Savage Club.

The club is beautifully fitted out with traditional private club décor and memorabilia. Complete with shrunken heads, spears, shields, an elephants foot and many artworks. It is a fascinating club to visit and to dine in. We were very well looked after by Club Secretary Mr Richard Elvidge who took us on a tour of the club. The dinner was excellent and so was the service. The Melbourne Savage Club is a great place for members to visit when next in Melbourne. Whilst in Melbourne we stayed at the RACV Club. The RACV is a huge club with 30,000 members. Accommodation standards are very high and so are the facilities. We were provided with a tour by Club Manager Mark Lucas and we met with Club and Resort Committee Chair Netta Griffin. I am not sure that I could recall all of the facilities but here goes: squash court, gym, pool, wine bar, formal dining, informal dining, general bar, function rooms, library, wine tasting room, extensive billiards room, cinema room, sports bar, extensive parking, spa/massage, coffee shop, outdoor lunch rooms. With a grand piano in the foyer to entertain members, the RACV is a vibrant and modern style of club.

Savage Club

RACV Club

Our final destination on the tour was the Kelvin club where we met with the club secretary Mr John Lanica, Vice President John Dall’Amico and committee member Jim Colbert for lunch. The Kelvin Club is another small private club tucked away in a lane in Melbourne. It has a lovely front bar, billiards room and dining rooms. The SAS have used the club as a base for many years and so it has strong military ties to our club. The food was excellent and we were made to feel most welcome. In all it was an important trip to meet with reciprocal club management and exchange information about how our respective clubs are going. Several of them are considering a trip to Adelaide and we look forward to seeing them here at our Club and returning the hospitality. Stephen Diamond General Manager

RECIPROCAL CLUB VISIT THE PENN CLUB NEW YORK The Penn Club is most centrally located in New York City, 44th St, near 5th Avenue. On the same street are a number of other prestigious Clubs, including the New York Yacht Club across the road. Entering the Club you become part of the elegance and sophistication of New York of yesteryear, but all services are efficient and modern (quick registration and check-out, WiFi in your rooms, smart casual dress standards, great gym facilities, and most comfortable dining and lounge facilities). The bed was the most comfortable I have ever slept on. All suites have en-suite facilities, bar fridge, modern large TV etc. The origins of the Club are the graduates of the Penn State University who reside in NYC. Being an Ivy League Uni, the list of alumni is exceptional, and this is reflected in photos and painting throughout the Clubhouse, and the generous gifts made to the Club over the years. The Club occupies a 13 story building, and has around 40 guests suites. Concierge and registration desk is manned 24 hours. Generally NYC is not a cheap city for accommodation, although advanced bookings can during quieter times save a lot. However, the Penn Club has fixed tariffs which are most competitive with the grander hotels, even when the ‘introduced guest’ fee is added for members of reciprocal clubs. Considering its location in Midtown and close proximity to major attractions and the subway (there are also always taxis available at the door), this venue is a MUST STAY on your next trip to NYC. COLOURS MARCH 2014

This year the Cruising Yacht Club of South Australia’s marine training centre (CYCSA Marine Academy) became SA’s first and only Royal Yachting Association / Yachting Australia accredited training centre. What this means is we can provide internationally recognised courses and qualifications, including RYA/YA Competent Crew, Day Skipper and the International Certificate of Competence (a requirement for overseas yacht chartering). RYA qualifications are regarded as the pinnacle of yachting achievement, but there’s a broad range of courses suitable for beginners as well! Are you interested in chartering a yacht overseas? If you are considering chartering a yacht overseas for a sailing holiday then the International Certificate of Competence (ICC) is a must. It’s essentially a ‘bareboat charter license’ that is increasingly being requested by charter companies as evidence of yachting competence. While the requirements vary from country to country, the ICC is recognised to a greater or lesser extent throughout the European Union. It is of particular importance if you are chartering a vessel in a foreign country, or using the European inland waterways. In northern European coastal waters, the ICC is not usually required. However, there are variations meaning that you should always check what is acceptable in foreign states before you go.

To gain an ICC you will need to prove your competence by completing a practical and theory assessment for the category of ICC required. Categories include Coastal Waters, Inland Waters, Powerboats, Sailing boats and Personal Watercraft. You can take the test with one of our instructors, on our 11.6m training vessel Academy 1 or your own boat, and the cost is $400.

Wine Luncheon – Mollydooker

Connoisseur Cigar and Single Malt Dinner

Wednesday 12th March 2014

Friday 14th March 2014

Mollydooker is an affectionate Aussie term for Left-Hander - because both Sarah and Sparky Marquis – the husband and wife winemaking team based in McLaren Vale Australia - are both lefties!

Our annual black tie cigar and single malt dinner is upon us again. Join fellow cigar connoisseurs for fine food, top end single malt whisky and the enjoyment of a cigar.

Besides being left-handed, Sarah & Sparky are some of the most decorated winemakers in the world. They have received more 94-99 point scores from Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate than other winemakers in the world. They have been awarded with five 99-point scores in the last 10 years.

Celebrate the Army Dinner Saturday 1st March 2014 On March 1, 1901, 28923 colonial soldiers – comprising permanent members, militia and volunteers, were transferred to the new Australian Army. This year the Army celebrates 113 years of service to the nation. This annual Club dinner allows members to reflect on the dedicated service of all units in the Army and associated personnel, men and women both past and present and to pay tribute to those who have given their lives in the service of their country. During World War I, 800 officers and 2,840 men served in the AFC and 175 lost their lives. Anzac Day Breakfast

Wednesday 23rd April 2014

Friday 25th April 2014

Come celebrate the Feast of St George this year at the club and show everyone else how the English do it (not that it’s a competition with St Patricks day of course – and not that you have to be English to attend).

Members and their guests are invited to attend breakfast at the Club after the Dawn Service. A hearty breakfast with all the trimmings and accompanied by Gunfire coffee and tea will be served.

The earliest documented mention of St George in England comes from the venerable Bede and was mentioned in the will of Alfred the Great (one of England’s legendary Kings). The Synod of Oxford declared St. George’s Day a feast day in the kingdom of England and Edward III put his Order of the Garter under the banner of St. George. As you can see it has a great and long tradition.

Time: 0730 to 0930 Dress: Smart casual with Medals Cost: $29.50 Bookings Close: Wednesday 23rd April 2014

So if you want to sample all things English, why not join members and their guests at this auspicious occasion? Chef will offer Scotch Eggs, De-constructed Beef Wellington and Bakewell Tart. Dress up in white and red, wave the flag, get into the celebrations and enjoy the company of others (note : there will be some surprises, entertainment and funfair too – so come along).

Wine Lunch – Sevenhill Wednesday 14th May 2014 Sevenhill was established in 1851 when the Jesuits who settled in the area planted vines to produce sacramental wine. From these modest beginnings, the Jesuits’ focus on wine has remained, with Sevenhill adding to its sacramental wine production with an extensive range of table wines that are highly regarded throughout Australia and overseas. Sevenhill’s reputation reflects a commitment to the creation of distinctive wines that express the authentic styles and flavours of the Clare Valley. Integral to this philosophy are our modern winemaking skills and highly prized vineyards that provide highquality, estate-grown fruit, some of which is sourced from vines among the oldest in the Clare Valley. As the only remaining Jesuit-owned winery in Australia, residing Jesuits are actively involved in Sevenhill’s ongoing development in partnership with lay staff who share the ethos of building the Jesuit Mission to support works of charity and compassion throughout Australia. We are pleased to welcome back Brother John May and look forward to hearing the latest from Sevenhill. Schnitty and Quiz Night

Wednesday 11th June 2014

Friday 13th June 2014

Two Hands Wines was founded in early 1999 by Michael Twelftree and Richard Mintz and from the outset, Two Hands set out to be unique.

We have transformed our traditional quiz night with a more casual approach, offering guests chicken or beef schnitzels with a selection of toppings or sauce as the prelude for our annual quiz night. Make up a table of 8 or join the Club table for fun, facts and frivolity and the chance to win great prizes. Get your bookings in early and your thinking caps on – don’t miss out.

The original aim shared by Michael and Richard was to make the best possible Shiraz-based wines from prized Shiraz growing regions throughout Australia. Their intention was, and still is, to showcase the diversity of Australian Shiraz by highlighting regional characteristics and allowing the fruit to be the primary feature of the wines. Two Hands refers to the very personable approach taken with each parcel of grapes, no matter how big or small. The wines are carefully guided through the viticulture and winemaking process by Michael Twelftree.

Time: 1830 Dinner 1930 Quiz Dress: Relaxed Dress - no jacket or tie required Cost: $25 food only, drinks invoiced per table Bookings Close: Wednesday 11th June 2014

This approach is reflected in everything from the names of the wines through to innovative packaging and, not least, the wines themselves. Two Hands has grown to be a clear market leader and now exports wines to over 24 countries around the world. We look forward to welcoming xxx and learning more about Two Hands. Time: 1200 for 1230 Dress: Dining Room dress rules apply Cost: $75.00 per person including wines Bookings Close: Friday 6th June 2014

CLUB HISTORY

CLUB HISTORY The current Club premises in Hutt Street were acquired in 1957 from M E Hegerty. The building was built in 1872 by John Rounsevell as a villa residence and he named it “Landunna”. We are lucky that the owner had the foresight to take this photograph shortly after completion. After Mr Rounsevell passed away in 1902 the building changed ownership several times and in the 1940s the balcony was removed, the sunroom was constructed upstairs and the front porch was installed. The building was also referred to as “Ulysses” from this time. In 2013, in recognition of the heritage status of the building, the Board approved the commission of a Conservation Management Plan. That Plan is to be delivered to the Club shortly and it will contain vital information about the history of the building and future conservation management works. It is the Club’s intention to obtain tax deductible status on any future proposed works to the heritage parts of the premises. Members can enjoy reading more about the history of the club by purchasing the club history book, from which the above information has been sourced, at the Club bar or order your copy by phoning the Club on 8223 2422.

CLUB LIBRARY Club Librarian: Mr Michael Garner

There were 7 military history events held during 2013 covering recent and distant historical occurrences with about 200 attendances. Although not part of the military history program, a dinner with a theme of Dam Busters was held and very well attended. Perhaps a similar event but with a different theme could occur in 2014. Members and their guests are encouraged to consider attending these events and particularly those without a military background. The events provide a good general knowledge insight into events of national significance often with a South Australian flavour. 8 events are scheduled for 2014 but the program may be added to as more is known about activities that form part of the Centenary of ANZAC. I thank my colleagues on the organising committee for the time they put into arranging the program. They are Lieutenant Tristan Lodge (currently serving RAN), CAPT Sharon Mascall-Dare (currently serving Army), CAPT Craig Mitchell (Army – retired). We welcome other participants. Again this year Bridge has been supported by its small but loyal band of followers. I would hope we could welcome more players next year and any member wishing to bring friends is most welcome. It is played using the duplicate scoring method but hands are re-dealt each time this is an easy method of handicap and scores during the year have borne this out. I hope to see you all in the New Year first programmed games being the third Wednesday in February. Any member wishing to use the card sets only need to arrange with Sharon or the office, cards, scorers and pencils are all supplied for members enjoyment. And of course we do it with “finesse”! GOLF GROUP NAV SAV GOLF CUP 2013 Club golfers and partners thoroughly enjoyed the October 2013 trip to Melbourne. We were warmly welcomed by The Melbourne Savage Club members many who we have got to know quite well over the last 10 years or more. The Savages hosted a superb Dinner in their Bank Place Club on the Thursday night. We dined surrounded by portraits of ex- Presidents one of whom was Sir Robert Menzies who presided for some 16 years. The Melbourne Savage Club is a luncheon Club and well worth a visit particularly if you are staying at the RACV as it is a short 5 minute walk away. Friday saw the commencement of golf at The Latrobe Golf Club which is located near the CBD and bordered by the Yarra River. It was a magnificent warm and sunny dayperfect for some competitive golf and friendly banter. The Bus tour with partners to Chateau Yering for lunch on Saturday was a highlight on what was another beautiful Melbourne spring day. This was followed by a visit to a revamped RACV Healesville for afternoon tea. Sunday took us down to The National Golf Club Old Course in both rainy and windy conditions. A true test of golf!
