World War I Commemorative Issue July 2014
Centenary of the Great War On 4 August 1914, Australia Enters World War I – Join us at the Centenary Dinner
Foreign Soil (The Field) Why cometh you to this yon hallowed grave? Laying flowers down against cold foreign soil. Forgotten past now lost in time unseen, cocooned unscathed from fear and burdened toil. You stop to ponder questions left unsaid, by those who died for they that now do live Recalling all who speak of glory past, become confined to shadow – none to give.
Australian Troops Rounding Idiot Corner, Westhoek Ridge, Belgium
They whisper meekly words through silent rush, as streams once red now turn a softer blue Heroic deeds soon destined for the grave, unread – the grace of honour ripens dew. Those lives once lost sleep ever softly still, against the mud where darkness soon doth peek Their vigil felt – such burden bears the cost, into the ground their comfort soul to seek. Both rich and poor lay buried side by side, no more divided rank and sapper rest All comrades in this final place doth meet, war-memories withstand that fallowed test. Their purpose bound diminished not by time, for still you visit, still you try to see The need to know the past for future minds, such power through the grave seeks liberty. But in this world the thirst for war goes on, across the land the children fight to die Perhaps again in foreign fields you’ll stop, to honour graves of those whose stories lie.
Centenary of World War One CAPT Mark Williams
COLOURS WW I COMMEMORATIVE ISSUE JULY 2014
From The President Dear Members, Winter is almost upon us and I am sure that many of you would agree with me in wondering where the year has gone. I am pleased to report that the GovernorGeneral His Excellency General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC (Retd) has accepted our invitation to become an Honorary Member of the Club. Sir Peter joins the Governor of South Australia His Excellency Rear Admiral Kevin Scarce AC CSC RAN and the Chiefs of the three services as Honorary members. Last financial year the Board focused on restructuring our operation and increasing spend per member in order to achieve a surplus budget. This year the Board has concentrated on improvement to the Club’s House to ensure that it is in a sound condition to best serve our membership in the future. Further details about the improvements are contained in the General Manager’s Report. The Decor and Arts Group lead by Capt Mark Williams has been busy. Many members have favourably commented to me on the return of the painting ‘The Beach At Anzac’ (the original painted by Frank Crozier in 1919 under commission by the Commonwealth Government is hung in the Australian War Memorial) to the Gallipoli Room and Bob Cowper’s ‘Night Kill Over France’ to the Air Force Room. SQNLDR Cowper DFC* was one of only eight Australians invited to attend WWII anniversary ceremonies in Europe in June 2014. The enlargement of the early photograph of the Club House complete with balcony taken in 1872 now housed in the front entrance reception has also attracted much interest. Members have enjoyed some old and a number of new functions recently. The return to our social calendar of The St Georges Day Dinner with beef eaters in attendance on 23 April was a great success. The Encounter Dinner celebrating the 212th Anniversary of the meeting of Matthew Flinders and Nicholas Baudin with the Naval Commander CMDR Alan Williams and
Club Directory Honorary French Consul Mrs Susan Crafter attending supported by the Naval Band and recent Fathers and Daughters Dinner also proved very popular.

Around 80 members and guests enjoyed Anzac Day breakfast at the Club and over 140 returned after the March to enjoy the traditional Anzac Day Lunch and the camaraderie of their mates. I commend to members our annual Penfolds Dinner to be held on 21 June and suggest that you book early to avoid disappointment. I recently met for lunch at the Club with our oldest Club member Capt Neville Conrad who celebrated his 100th birthday on 18 May 2014, together with our youngest member Mr Cameron Burnett, 19 years of age. All three of us enjoyed the occasion and I congratulated Capt Conrad on his significant milestone and wish him continued good health.

From The General Manager
What’s New At The Club?
Welcome to a special edition of Colours in recognition of the centenary of the commencement of World War I. Australia entered the war in August 1914 and the Club is holding a centenary dinner (see page 14 ). Staff Sadly, we said goodbye to another great staff member Mark Donnelly. Mark has decided on a career change and has signed up with Bakers Delight to operate his own bakery franchise. The usual jokes came out of course; “hope you make plenty of dough, Mark “, “you’re on a roll there mate”. We all hope that he does very well and we wish him all the best with it. Members would have noticed that we have changed the way the front reception desk operates after the departure of Sharon Allen at the end of 2013. Sharon’s replacement is Paul Stamou and he is a 5 Star Hotel Guest Services Agent who has been in the industry for many years. Paul operates the front desk Tuesday to Friday from 11am to 8pm and Saturday from 4pm to 8pm. Paul can assist members, guests and reciprocal club visitors to the Club’s facilities during the early evening when you arrive at the Club. He can also take bookings from you by phone or email up to 8pm. Maintenance and Improvements Plenty of work has been going on around the Club. Once the car park was resurfaced we upgraded the signage and line markings to increase the safety of members, guests, staff and contractors. As you know, we must comply with Worker Health and Safety laws and public liability obligations, so please observe the signs and the speed limit of 5kmph. A bike rack has been installed and it is located near the rear bar entrance. At the moment, our neighbours are rebuilding and a temporary fence is in place until the end of June in the rear car park. Once that work is completed we intend to replace the back fences. We expect minimal interruption to car parking but please take care when parking in the affected areas.
Accommodation rooms were recently upgraded with new air conditioners, new refrigerators, new blinds and all rooms have now been painted. Members that have visitors coming from interstate can sign in their guests into the Club’s accommodation rooms. A lot of small jobs have been completed like straightening out the carpet hump that was in the dining room, repairs to door handle hardware, electrical circuit repairs, improvements to the kitchen doors to reduce noise coming from the kitchen into the dining room, replacing all beer lines and planting of more plants in the gardens. All of these small jobs add up to a big improvement in the Club’s facilities. Subscriptions Yes it’s time again to send out the annual subscriptions for 2014. A rise of 5% was approved at the 2013 Annual General Meeting by the membership. We know that’s above the inflation rate but the reality is that staff costs and on costs are rising well above inflation, as is electricity, gas, water, rates, and, as seen above, we are conducting repairs and improvements to make your Club a Great Club. Members can pay subscriptions in one lump sum, six monthly or monthly by credit card. The voucher was retained at $200 for the year. And if you haven’t used this year’s voucher please come in before 30 June or it will expire and be forfeited to Club revenue!

RECIPROCAL CLUB VISIT ARMY AND NAVY CLUB WASHINGTON, D.C. We recently stayed at the Army and Navy Club in Washington, D.C. and would like to give you a short review of the club. The club is located in an excellent location for seeing the sites of D.C. It is two blocks from the White House, three blocks from the National Mall with its numerous museums, and less than one block from the Metro (underground railway). There are very good restaurants within walking distance too. The club has 32 guest rooms. The rooms appear to be larger than average. The rooms all have en suite bathrooms, and there is complimentary internet. The club has excellent service. There is a high ratio of staff to guests, so there is always someone there to carry your bag, or to provide assistance. While staying in the club, breakfast is complimentary. The dining room is grand, much like the complimentary breakfast. The views from the dining room looked out onto Farragut Square from 15 foot tall windows. Allow time for a leisurely breakfast to take in the atmosphere. Within the club there is an extensive library and a small business centre. There’s also a fitness centre on the lower ground floor as well as squash courts. Ask the concierge about the city’s shared bicycles; a rack of available bicycles is just outside the main door - you won’t be disappointed! The major sights of Washington are all located around the National Mall a four kilometre long lawn and cycling is a great way to appreciate them. The club has extensive collections including Admiral David Farragut’s portrait and sword. In the 1864 Battle of Mobile Bay he gave the illustrious order “Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead” .I would recommend this club as an excellent base while visiting Washington DC for business or pleasure. ATTENTION ALL GOLF PLAYERS! It’s time to reclaim some Silverware.
Just as important is the annual NavSav Cup.
We are seeking golf players to join our team of dedicated enthusiasts as we form teams to play for Club Pride and Honour against our two most notable rivals: The Adelaide Club and the Melbourne Savage Club.
The Melbourne Savage Club currently holds that trophy as well and they are due to come to Adelaide in September/ October this year for the 2014 contest.
The Gall Cup is usually played at either Kooyonga or Royal Adelaide Golf Clubs. The Adelaide Club holds the Cup and it’s time to win it back.
We have plenty of spaces to fill and urge members who play competitive golf to register their interest with Golf Convenor CAPT Mick Taylor taymadpp@bigpond.net.au or at the Club with Member Services Paul Stamou phone 8223 2422 or email paul.stamou@navmil.org

ST GEORGE’S DAY DINNER CELEBRATING THE PATRON SAINT OF SOLDIERS AND OF ENGLAND The 23rd of April is remembered for a great many things including the birth and death of William Shakespeare. It is also the day we celebrate the Patron Saint of Soldiers and of England – Saint George. So what better way to celebrate this event than by reinitiating an old club tradition with a Saint George’s Day dinner. Guests were welcomed to the event with wine and two perfectly clad Beefeaters, who were the ‘photographic’ stars of the show! Dinner included traditional Beef Wellington and Yorkshire pudding, Scotch Eggs and Bakewell Tarts. The night was a huge success with speeches by the President and Vice-President of the Saint George’s society, and toasts by Supt Bruce James-Martin and Event Champion, Capt Mark Williams. The dining president Major Marc Ockenden presided over the whole affair, with many guests retiring to the bar for drinks and music (courtesy of Rex) afterwards. The night was truly enjoyed by all who attended. For those who missed out... don’t worry... there’s always next year.

Serving Officers and Partners Dining in Night
But how did the United States manage to pull off such an incredibly audacious feat just eight years after Alan Shepard became the first American flung into space on a relatively simple 15-minute ballistic flight? Internationally-respected spaceflight historian Colin Burgess will take you back to a time filled not only with bold and legendary characters and accomplishments, but many shocking tragedies. You will re-live through words and pictures a truly remarkable era in our lifetime when two powerful nations were pitted against each other in a relentless, expensive and headlong race to the moon. An entertaining and informative talk is promised on 17 July, appropriately the same date on which Apollo 11 was launched to the moon 55 years ago. As well as writing on Australian military history which includes his book, ‘Australia’s Dambusters’, Colin (who gave us two very well attended talks last year, celebrating the 70th Anniversary of the ‘Dambusters’) is a prolific author and recognised authority on the history of human space exploration, with a number of books published on the subject. He regularly travels to the United States in order to conduct research and interviews, and is well known to many of the surviving Gemini and Apollo astronauts.. Time: 1900 for 1930 Dress: Jacket & Tie Cost: $65.00, which includes 2 course dinner and beverages Bookings Close: Tuesday 15th July 2014
Wine Luncheon – Wynns Wednesday 9th July 2014 Wynns Coonawarra Estate is the Coonawarra regions pre-eminent wine producer, with the largest holding of the region’s best and longest established vineyard sites. The first vineyards were planted by Scottish pioneer John Riddoch in 1891 and today the wines are regarded as benchmark for the district. The two flagship reds, namely Michael Shiraz and John Riddoch Cabernet Sauvignon will be tasted at this lunch. Time: 1200 for 1230 Dress: Jacket & Tie Cost: $79.00, includes 3-course meal and wine Bookings Close: Monday 7th July 2014
NASA’s Giant Step into Space Dinner Thursday 17th July 2014 “WHERE NO MAN HAS GONE BEFORE: OUR EPIC JOURNEY TO THE MOON” How many can recall that momentous day in 1969 when Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin (Buzz) Aldrin expertly guided lunar module Eagle to a safe landing on the surface of the moon? Then, at 12:56 p.m. on the afternoon of 21 July (East Coast Australian time), Neil Armstrong tentatively reached out with his left boot and stepped into the history books, becoming the first person to leave a footprint on the moon. Rabbie Burns suppers have been part of Scottish culture for about 200 years as a means of commemorating their best loved bard. When Burns immortalised haggis in verse he created a central link that is maintained to this day. Wine Luncheon – d’Arenberg Wednesday 10th September 2014 Back by popular demand d’Arenberg is one of the most significant wineries in McLaren Vale. In 1912 Joseph Osborn, a teetotaller and director of Thomas Hardy and Sons, purchased the wellestablished Milton Vineyards of 25 hectares in the hills just north of the townships of Gloucester and Bellevue, now known as McLaren Vale. It was a small and humble start but the wines gained immediate cult status amongst imbibers and judges. The 1968 Cabernet Sauvignon won the Jimmy Watson Trophy at the 1969 Royal Melbourne Wine Show and the 1967 Red Burgundy (Grenache based) was awarded 7 trophies and 29 gold medals in Australian capital city wine shows. By the 1970’s d’Arenberg wines had become very fashionable, having gained a significant national and international profile in less than 20 years. d’Arenberg’s art of being different extends to a range of fortified and dessert wines, which have legendary status worldwide, as well as operating d’Arry’s Verandah Restaurant, one of South Australia’s most loved and highly awarded restaurant, set on a picturesque hilltop with our Cellar Door tasting room adjoining. Australians were the first peacekeepers to serve under United Nations auspices when they sent military observers to Indonesia in 1947 during the independence struggle. Over 65,000 Australian personnel have partaken in more than fifty peacekeeping operations, in about 25 different conflicts.
The civil war created a highly volatile atmosphere in Bosnia and peacekeepers played a vital role in maintaining peace.
In addition, there have been Australians serving in a number of multi-national and allied coalitions whose purpose has been either peacekeeping, disaster relief, policing, medical support or other non-warlike operations.

“For three generations our family has crafted great Australian wines in the Clare Valley, South Australia. Music Recital Night – Folk Songs by Carolyn Crowley and Alan Hartley Saturday 11th October 2014 Carolyn Crowley You can’t sing to flowers at two, and on the Sunday School stage at three, bother that voice and violin throughout an entire childhood, and not grow up to be a singer. What sets Carolyn apart is her clear vocal quality, so ethereal it has inspired deep emotion all these years. It is like a distant song that has passed through history and still haunts ever beyond capture. Alan Hartley Alan is an unassuming Aussie bloke, the consummate, easy going professional guitarist who earns his bread and butter in the real world, as a corporate manager. His two bright sons have hauled him into grandpa status, but his music is as young as love, and as fresh as mountain springs. The sixties folk scene, the flower power, lives on in Alan, his fingers and his smile. Together they have been performing and enchanting Australian audiences for nearly 20 years with songs from the old and new folk era. Time: 1700 Drinks in the bar – no booking required 1800 Recital – bookings essential Tickets $16.50 1900 Dining in Bar or Dining Room

Start Yachting
Kate, Lucas and James scored a brilliant weekend in January for their Start Yachting Course with the CYCSA Marine Academy. Saturday was 42 degrees but with a 10-12 knot southwest breeze all day it was the best place to be and the sailing was perfect. On Sunday it was 43 degrees but with enough wind to get down to Glenelg where we enjoyed swimming off the jetty and dinner in the marina. A nice breeze picked up and we carried the spinnaker home getting into North Haven on sunset. Considering the temperatures it was a fabulous weekend! Why not jump on board for one of our next Start Yachting adventures!

BOOK CLUB The Book Club meets in the Ward Room on the last Friday of every month at 11.00am, with exception of April this year. The member whose chosen book is featured leads the session with some information about the author of the book, followed by each member’s impression of the book itself. Subsequent discussion is invariably far reaching and can engender differing viewpoints – and much laughter. We have had to shut the door to the hall on occasions lest we disturb the calm serenity of the Club! Then follows the most rewarding part of the meeting – members enjoy a bar lunch in the Ward Room and relax together. Friendships have been forged and support offered on many occasions. This year so far we have read Burial Rites, The Dovekeepers and The Lavender Keeper. Coming up next is The Swan Thief and Caleb’s Crossing. Then, for a change of pace, we will discuss the books which have most influenced our lives.
