It’s with a healthy mix of excitement and fear that I write this, my second ever Welcome.

The first time was for the May 2016 issue and we’ve come such a long way since then.

If you’re a long-time DUO reader I hope you like our new size, our bigger and brighter look and our focus on women’s issues. And if this is the first time you’ve seen DUO, I hope you like that too and find it a good read with stories that inspire, educate and affect you in some way.

You may be surprised that this is not our first issue but actually our 151st! That’s 12 and half years of making a monthly magazine that was Townsville centric.

Over the years we had readers in both Cairns and Mackay who wanted us to include their cities so we have! Yes, our motivation is really that simple. In the coming issues we’ll be bringing you interviews and stories about our North Queensland region and our local characters as well as people who inspire us.

So without further delay, please take a seat, open your DUO and enjoy the journey with us. We promise it will always be a great read.

IT’S HARD TO TOP WINNING THE BLOCK BUT AS A NEW AMBASSADOR FOR MYER AND HAVING RECENTLY PUBLISHED A BOOK, LIFE JUST KEEPS GETTING BETTER FOR SEAFOLLY MODEL ELYSE KNOWLES.

At only 25, Elyse Knowles became a household name when she and her partner Josh Barker won Season 13 of The Block.

The couple sold their winning house on The Block to comedian Dave Hughes for $3.067 million and are now set for life but, boy, did they work hard for it.

“It was the most challenging thing we’ve ever done and probably will ever do,” Elyse says. “There were times when we didn’t sleep for three nights in a row.”

You’d understand if the couple never wanted to renovate again but they’re planning on doing just that.

“We’ve just bought a new home around the bay in Melbourne and we’re waiting on our permits to get approved so we can start renovating,” Elyse says.

“We’re living there right now and it’s pretty average but it means we don’t have to worry too much – we’re just living a happy, carefree life.”

Josh has a job just a few minutes down the road and pops home for a break and lunch and the couple’s dogs Isla and Harlow are loving the nearby beach and dog park.

“At first Isla didn’t like Harlow at all and was a bit depressed,” Elyse says. “We had to work on getting her used to having another dog around but now they’re besties.”

It’s been a busy time for Elyse, who is currently juggling a number of commitments.

“This year I picked up Myer as an ambassador, which was always a goal of mine, and I’m working with eco-friendly

haircare company Aveda and Vital Greens, which is a green supplement that gives you all your vitamins, minerals and probiotics,” Elyse says.

“I’m also a global ambassador for Davidoff Cool Water and recently shot their latest campaign in Tahiti with Scott Eastwood.”

Despite her busy lifestyle, Elyse has also recently released a book. Titled From Me to You, it’s an intimate collection of stories from her upbringing, school days and entrance into the modelling world, which wasn’t all smooth sailing.

“I had a lot of obstacles with the modelling industry. I started quite young and was told to go overseas as it would make my career but it definitely didn’t,” Elyse says.

“It was more of a rude awakening to the industry, which can be brutal at times, especially travelling overseas by yourself when you’re quite young. I learnt a lot about myself including not to be shy and let anyone take control of my voice.”

Containing valuable advice for navigating life’s ups and downs, From Me to You is an engaging read that Elyse hopes will empower others to take control of their lives.

“Everyone is different and we need to celebrate that,” she says.

“We really need to stop comparing ourselves to others and embrace what we’re doing. Nothing happens at the click of a finger. We just have to be patient and be true to ourselves.” www.elyseknowles.com.au

How would your friends describe you?

After they’ve gotten to know me, most of my friends have said I’m very different to how I come across. I think I seem aloof to people, stand-offish, but I would say that’s because I’m very shy and not very good in social situations where I don’t know people. But I have a bit of a wicked sense of humour when I let my hair down with friends.

What’s something your parents have taught you?

I grew up in Sydney where both my parents worked long hours, so I learnt that it’s normal to work hard for what you want and the harder you work the better your life gets.

What experience has changed the way you view the world?

Travelling to India has had an incredible influence on my outlook. It made me put things I have always taken for granted

into perspective. The country is a mass of jarring contradictions – insane beauty, extreme poverty and crazy happiness all mixed up together. I will never forget the kilometres of blue plastic flying into Mumbai, which are the slums. I’m keen to take my children there – I think everyone should visit to realise what’s important in life and how great it is to live here in Australia.

What are you passionate about?

I love beautiful things, which is how I ended up designing opal jewellery and having a shop (Tropical Style in Palm Cove). Unique jewellery gets me every time. I can’t resist anything that stands out, which is why opals feature in most of my jewellery. I also love classic accessories. You can’t go wrong owning good-quality fashion accessories and jewellery because they can be worn for years.

What’s a favourite pastime?

A banana lounge in the tropics with a page-turning book in my hand is one of my favourite pastimes. This is how I love to do nothing. I also like thinking about the next direction we will take for stock in the shop.

I’m always changing my mind and being inspired by new things.

What are people surprised to discover about you?

Most people would probably be surprised at how much I love gardening. Moving to the tropics, I am mad about the plants that I can grow here. The way everything flourishes here blows me away.

What are your hopes for the future?

My life if pretty good right now so I just hope my future holds more of the same.

What makes you tick?

I love a challenge and I like to keep busy. When I’m passionate about something it’s my main focus and I strive to perfect it. My life philosophy would be based on life is too short to wait until tomorrow. I’m quite an impatient person so I like to try new things.

What’s one of your most embarrassing moments?

The list is so very long but one that stands out would be when my husband and I were about to take off on an international flight to LA. I had bought myself a neck pillow that had a really annoying tag on it, so I thought I would rip it off. When I did, it tore the pillow – exploding thousands of little white Styrofoam balls absolutely everywhere!

Describe one of your most life-defining moments?

I’ve had many life-defining moments, from my overseas travels to different jobs I’ve had including working on a mine site, as a stewardess on a luxury motor yacht, working in an architecture firm and owning my own businesses. Another would be having children, which has shaped me in ways I couldn’t have predicted. I look back and feel very lucky to have experienced all those adventures that have contributed to making me who I am today.

What are you passionate about?

Interior decorating. I walk into any room and start decorating it in my mind. My business, House of Caicos, is a direct reflection of that passion. I’m able to purchase products that showcase my style and assist people in decorating their homes. I love making my customers happy.

What do you like to do when you aren’t working?

My favourite thing to do is spend time at the beach paddle boarding and hanging out with my family. My daughters Frankie (6) and Gwen (5) are at an age where they have to be kept busy at all times so the outdoors is great for that. Oh and redecorating my house, much to my husband’s dismay!

I’m currently working really hard on my business and also working within my husband’s mining business so everything is very full-on at the moment. A vision for myself would be to grow my business to a point where I have freedom to take it in any direction and travel while it’s in operation. A massive goal for me is to take my kids overseas to experience another way of life for a period of time while they are young and easily influenced. I think that would be an amazing gift for them.

IMPERFECT TWO MONTHS AGO, I was at my new home in upstate New York where I’d moved with my my partner, Everest, and my three-year-old daughter, Ripley. I had been dealing with moving for the past few months, from LA back to New York, shifting furniture and unpacking, and all the exhausting fun that comes with relocating. I was overtired but happy.

My personal things were scattered between the moving truck, the rental house and our new house, and in the chaos I hadn’t realised that I had forgotten to take my medication for a few days (I’d been diagnosed with Lupus and APS after Ripley was born). Everest and I had scheduled our first date in what seemed like years – we were going to a music festival.

We’d hired a babysitter; it was going to be perfect. >

> I DON’T REMEMBER FALLING, but I do remember my partner telling me everything would be okay and I remember the stretcher and ambulance in flashes (including them cutting my favourite Johnny Cash shirt off and me hilariously begging them not to when I was bleeding profusely from my head, chin and missing a tooth).

The days after the accident, in the hospital, were the worst. My lip was so big I could barely talk, and I had so much mouth pain. I couldn’t eat.

I couldn’t sleep. But it could have been so much worse – I could have had my daughter in my arms. I could have ended up in a wheelchair.

I’ll take a few scars over that.

“I COULD HAVE HAD MY DAUGHTER IN MY ARMS. I COULD HAVE ENDED UP IN A WHEELCHAIR. I’LL TAKE A FEW SCARS OVER THAT.”

I didn’t know what the damage would be long-term. I didn’t know if the fashion world would be ready for me with scars, so while I was recovering I kept telling myself: ‘You’ll keep doing music, filming, and enjoying what you’re doing.’ I also follow girls on social media – there’s Elly Mayday, who writes about having ovarian cancer – and seeing someone like her has really helped. On social media, we’re constantly inundated with perfection, and this is the flip side. This is how other people are living as well.

When I posted a photo of my injuries and scars on Instagram – I’ve got a lightning bolt scar on my forehead and scars on my lip and chin – I wasn’t sure how it would be received. But I am really astounded and grateful for all the supportive messages I got, and am feeling very loved. There are so many people going through something hardcore and feeling ashamed about it. I don’t want people to feel that way.

I thought I didn’t like my scars, but now I dig them. Scars are cool. They tell a story. My scar is one of my identifying features now. I’m going to try to own it. I could laser it away, but I don’t want to. I always think of Joaquin Phoenix, and how great his scars are – how they make his face so interesting.

Through my daughter, I’m also reminded how important it is to not be critical of myself. Sometimes my daughter will come home and say, ‘Mama, I’ve got big legs.’ And I’ll say, ‘You’ve got perfect legs. You’ve got tall, strong, healthy legs.’

Flattened Toads, Shrieking Foxes, Mango Pits….

On living in the North by Tamara Hogan

I have this push-pull, love-hate, I-do-but-I-don’t, ‘relationship’ with Summer in North Queensland.

I know I’m not alone.

(What DO tourists think of us as we nonchalantly sidestep grotesque amphibian pressings on galvanised tarmac, without a backward glance?).

There is a distinct memory, admittedly from long ago, of running in the late afternoon of a boisterous December (I did mention distant memory…). The day, glutinous with humidity, was slowly slithering into dusk.

What of our mozzie coil wisps, igniting nostalgia for holidays past? Whose spirit doesn’t lift at the first rousing chorus of passionate frogs, crooning Sinatra to lovers lost and found?

The clouds promised rain. But promises are cheap when Weather Gods play poker in the North. Who will get the rain, and when?

And whom else, but us, would half-smirk upon and halfbemoan, the gnawed mango pits splattered over driveways by shrieking foxes (of the flying variety. Again, what do the tourists think)?

I gritted my teeth as rivulets dripped off pointy elbows and coursed down slippery shins. This was no ordinary sweat. This was Man-Sweat. ‘Holy it’s HOT,’ I thought, and then grinned, wondering at my own madness to be running in the heat.

Who, but a Northerner, born, bred or adopted, could take sardonic glee in the spikiness of a North Queensland Summer?

The razing cicadas. The viscous air.

The flattened toads.

All this, this chaotic, messy madness, in a fusion of frenetic hair and polar-bear shades of sunscreen.

This is satire at its finest; the punishing yet humorous juncture of Summer in North Queensland.

And though I pirate-curse and air-kick against these brassy months (like any Northerner worth their salt should), I love it still.

I know I’m not alone.

Born out of a business plan brainstormed on a road trip to the Daintree, Minoma Health & Fitness launched in Townsville in 2016. Since then sisters Brianna and Natalia O’Toole have expanded to Sydney and now have over 150 happy clients.

“We’ve always loved being active and decided we wanted to help females in the community better themselves through exercise and nutrition,” Brianna says.

“Growing up in Townsville our whole lives meant we had a large network of friends. We decided to send out a message to 10–15 girls to see if they would be interested in working on their fitness with us and they all said yes!”

Having completed seven marathons and 15 half marathons between them, the O’Toole sisters have developed a ‘mind over matter’ mentality, so it’s fitting their business name, ‘Minoma’, is an acronym of their fitness philosophy. Their other halves are also into fitness, with Brianna married to Cowboys player Michael Morgan and Natalia’s partner Valentine Holmes set to pursue his dreams in the NFL this year.

“Having a strong mind is the key to achieving any health and fitness endeavour,” Brianna says.

“Running didn’t come easily to us. Like all things fitness, it can be hard. We believe mindset is what has gotten us across the line.”

With complementary skills, Brianna and Natalia work well as a team.

“Bri is the organised one – she keeps me in line when it comes to the administration side of the business,” Natalia says.

“Bri’s also been a physiotherapist in a musculoskeletal clinic, so she’s able to offer that expertise to our clients as well.”

Business and computer-savvy, Natalia, does much of the behind-the-scenes work. She designed and runs the business website, organises the Minoma merchandise and is the first point of contact for the clients.

“She also happens to be the funniest person I know and the person I laugh the most with,” Brianna says.

“When your business partner is your best friend the challenges are minimal and the list of benefits are long.”

That’s not to say the duo don’t irritate each other occasionally, as siblings do.

“If one of us frustrates the other we’re not afraid to say it,” Brianna says.

“At the end of the day, we’re both passionate about working towards a common goal – offering Minoma clients a healthy and sustainable way of life. We strive to deliver innovative, exciting and challenging training programs, together with an eating guide designed by our nutritionist.

“We’re fans of resistance and functional training and we’re passionate about sharing our knowledge with females to not only sculpt and build fit, strong women, but to foster a healthy mind.”

Adopting a holistic approach, Brianna and Natalia acknowledge that health and wellbeing stretches far beyond the gym. And DUO Women readers are in for a treat with the sisters set to write a regular column on hot topics in the health and fitness industry.

“We’ll touch base on a variety of interesting topics, debunk the myths and confirm the facts,” Brianna says.

My Mum worked at THHS for most of my life, so it’s an organisation that I have felt very familiar with for a long time and love being a part of. When not at work, I’m hanging out with my four year old son, Ace (a black and white Border Collie) and catching up with friends.

MY BAG I probably have more bags than I will ever need (although that won’t stop me from ‘collecting’ more!). Happy, healthy babies and confident parents are just some of the known byproducts of babywearing, with one study finding that carried six-week-olds cried 43 per cent less than other children due to the simulation helping to regulate the baby’s own physical response in tune with the mother’s heartbeat and breathing.

Townsville mother-of-two Kareau McKey says babywearing is also important for those mothers who suffer from postnatal depression.

“One in three women will suffer depression or anxiety in their lifetime and 15 per cent of women will suffer postnatal depression,” she says.

“I suffered postnatal depression with both of my children. Research suggests exercise is a big factor in decreasing the symptoms. This is when I began my journey into postnatal fitness and now I’m a qualified instructor for Kangatraining Townsville.”

We encourage bringing it back to basics and that is what proves to be most effective every time. Rather than complicating it and suggesting a cupboard full of proteins powders and difficult restrictive diets we encourage our clients to understand the key food groups.

Grains Our body’s and taste bud’s preferred source of energy are carbohydrates. When our sources of grains are chosen wisely, you provide your body with a number of other nutrients such as: - Protein - Fibre - B group vitamins - minerals including iron, zinc and magnesium For those who don’t understand the significance of these nutrients and may downplay the importance of having them in your diet, here is a surprising fact!

• A lack of iron in your diet can mean a deficit in hemoglobin required to carry energy sustaining oxygen to every tissue.

Fruit More carbs! it is recommended we have two servings per day, at about 150 grams each. Vegetables and Legumes This food group is known to be nutrient dense, but low in energy. You know what that means… eat as much as your heart desires! Vegetables and legumes come in many different forms and we recommend you eat them all! They reduce the risk of heart disease, obesity and stroke.

Because they are so damn good for you, it is recommended you eat a whopping five servings!

Lean meat, eggs and meat alternatives These animal products are a rich source of protein and contain the essential fatty acids. For those who choose not to consume animal products, a great substitute are legumes as they contain many of the same vital nutrients. We should be consuming 1-3 servings from this food group per day. A single serve contains between 500-600 kj. For this reason, you must be mindful of your serving size so you don’t over eat.

Milk, milk products and alternatives This group does wonders for our bone health by providing us with the calcium we need. Greek yoghurt, milk and cheese are great options in controlled portions. The average adult is recommended to consume 2½ servings per day. You can get these servings through ½ cup of ricotta cheese or ¾ cup of yoghurt.

Healthy fats There are essential fatty acids which our body needs for daily functions. Nuts, fish, avocado and seeds are great options to make up the recommended two servings per day. In Australia we are lucky to have access to free universal newborn hearing assessments. Early diagnosis of hearing loss is important to ensure natural developmental progress and a happy and healthy baby.

But did you know how quickly hearing can change in a child? By the time they are ready to go to school they may be suffering from some form of hearing loss.

In 2016 a report showed that almost a quarter of school-aged children in Queensland are likely to suffer from some form of hearing issue.

is one of the more common hearing issues affecting school children. CAPD is essentially the brain having difficulty understanding or processing what is being heard by the child in certain environments.

Testing for CAPD must wait until the child is 7 years old as it is not until then that the auditory processing system has developed to an advanced enough stage to allow us to test it. Things to look out for in school aged children in grades 2-3 and onwards include: • Difficulties following instructions • Poor listening ability in noisy places

• Difficulty with learning at school • Being distracted or easily fatigued at school.

The positive take-away is that there are ways to treat or address problems associated with both disorders and the sooner treatment begins the better it is for the long-term development of your child.

If chronic excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) is causing you concern, take heart that there are options to manage the medical condition.

Do you experience chronic excessive sweating of the armpits, hands, feet or face? If so, you are not alone. At least three per cent of the global population suffers from this medical condition, called hyperhidrosis. Although hyperhidrosis is a benign disorder (of no danger to health), it carries implications for an individual’s quality of life by impairing daily activities.

Women report being more affected compared to men, and individuals who develop hyperhidrosis early in life report more impact on quality of life than those who develop the condition at a later age.

Those with axillary hyperhidrosis appear to be particularly affected in terms of quality of life and social functioning, followed by those with palmar hyperhidrosis. The overwhelming majority (90 per cent) of hyperhidrosis patients report that the condition affects their emotional state, with many saying it makes them feel depressed and 44

embarrassed. One-third of individuals were so affected they reported their sweating as barely tolerable or intolerable.

Individuals with affected armpits appear to be the most affected by associated psychological complaints and are significantly more likely to be unhappy or depressed than those with palmar hyperhidrosis.

Individuals with armpit hyperhidrosis may feel embarrassed by sweat-damp clothing, or needing to change clothes frequently. They may avoid public places or social gatherings as a result of their condition. Armpit hyperhidrosis is also reported by the majority of affected individuals to interfere with work activities, limiting the amount of time spent at work and performing some work tasks, such as public presentations, with career choices limited due to social embarrassment.

hyperhidrosis have indicated that they needed to change their work habits, are less effective, accurate and/or careful at the work they do, and/or accomplish less work because of their condition.

Those with palmar hyperhidrosis may be embarrassed to shake hands, particularly when meeting someone for the first time, because their palms are cold, wet and slippery. Wet palms may be taken by others as a sign of anxiety, and for individuals with palmar hyperhidrosis this can be an additional source of anxiety, which worsens the condition.

The vast majority of people with affected palms avoid shaking hands as a result of their condition and may face stigma and discrimination when they do shake hands. Hyperhidrosis may also impact on an individual’s ability to engage in intimate relationships and perform sexual activities.

What causes hyperhidrosis?

Some individuals affected by hyperhidrosis find their condition is aggravated by certain foods and have to modify their diet as a result. For example, they may need to avoid alcoholic or caffeinated beverages or spicy foods.

However, evidence suggests that dietary factors trigger sweating in only a small proportion of people with hyperhidrosis.

Hyperhidrosis is associated with an array of dermatological (skin) conditions including dermatitis, fungal infections such as candidiasis and bacterial infections.

Constant dampness associated with the condition can result in skin maceration (softening) and the overgrowth of fungi or bacteria. For example, hyperhidrosis is associated with maceration of the skin of the soles, which may result in an offensive odour or infection.

The exact cause of hyperhidrosis is unknown, but it is thought to be a physiological condition that stops the body from properly regulating its temperature.

There may be triggering factors. These may differ between individuals but can include hot weather, exercise, stress and anxiety.

Seeking treatment for hyperhidrosis is an important aspect of reducing the impact of the condition. Most people don’t discuss their excessive sweating with a medical professional and so don’t treat the condition. Many will be unaware they have a treatable medical condition.

Evidence suggests only one-third of affected individuals receive treatment for hyperhidrosis. Detection and management of the condition can significantly improve quality of life and social wellbeing. All individuals who find excessive sweating interferes with their day-to-day life should consult their doctor.

Doctors may also notice symptoms of excessive perspiration (eg fungal infection, damp clothing) when an individual attends for another health problem. In these cases the doctor may also make enquiries about sweating, if they suspect hyperhidrosis.

How can you manage hyperhidrosis?

The good news is that hyperhidrosis can be treated through a range of measures.

Simple lifestyle measures to reduce the signs of hyperhidrosis such as wearing loose, cool clothing made of fabric that is designed to absorb sweat and not promote odour, as well as the use of specially formulated antiperspirant deodorants, either prescription or nonprescription, may be all that is required.

Maintaining good hygiene is important for individuals affected by hyperhidrosis.

They should bathe daily and pay special attention to drying affected areas of skin (particularly the feet) to reduce bacterial concentrations. Affected feet should be aired regularly.

Excessive sweating may lead to dehydration if fluids are not replaced so ensuring hydration is maintained is an important consideration.

Hypnosis, psychotherapy and biofeedback are effective in treating a limited number of hyperhidrosis cases. Behavioural therapies including assertiveness training and systematic desensitisation (to overcome anxiety) are also reported as treatment options although there is no direct evidence of the effect of such treatments on quality of life.

Iontopheresis involves the introduction of ions to affected areas of skin via application of an electric current, and may be very effective in treating palmar or plantar hyperhidrosis, as these body areas can be readily submerged for treatment.

It provides temporary symptom relief and maintenance therapy is usually required.

Oxybutinin and other medicines that have an anticholinergic action, so interfering with the transmission of nerve signals to sweat glands, is a treatment option for generalised hyperhidrosis, particularly in the presence of other chronic medical conditions such as diabetes. Unfortunately, side effects limit its tolerability.

Thoracic sympathectomy is a minimally invasive procedure that can permanently

resolve hyperhidrosis for some. Used mainly in palmar hyperhidrosis and sometimes the face, it can be associated with significant side-effects such as compensatory sweating (in another body part). There are also risks associated with the procedure, and it is usually an option of last resort. It is not often used for feet sweating because of the risk of bladder and sexual dysfunction.

Injections of a well-known muscle relaxant used in cosmetic clinics for wrinkle reduction have been demonstrated to reduce the symptoms of hyperhidrosis when applied to the affected area. In Australia, this injectable is approved by Medicare for use as a treatment for cases of axillary hyperhidrosis in individuals over the age of 12, for whom antiperspirant deodorants (containing aluminium chloride hexahydrate) are ineffective, and when administered by accredited dermatologist, paediatrician or neurologist. Several studies have shown this treatment provides an improvement in quality of life and psychosocial wellbeing. The effect of treatment may last 4-6 months.

Why do you call yourselves the Hommeboys?

When we were looking to name our interior design sect of our business we wanted it to be off-the-cuff and fun, in a way playing off of our interiors themselves. The ‘home’ because that’s what we do and the ‘boys’ because we are playful and have a devil-may-care approach to design. ‘Homme’ is French for man but obviously sounds like ‘home’. We like that it sounded like ‘homeboy’ in that we treat our clients like our hommies. We threw the two together and from that evolved the Hommeboys.

What can you tell us about Sonoma, where the home you renovated is located?

Sonoma, California, is in the heart of wine country in the northern part of the San Francisco bay area. Life here centres around the whole concept of indoor/outdoor living, nature and cool and relaxed atmospheres. The area itself caters to a more country and farmhouse scene and the demographic is a lot older than we are but we feel we bring a fresh take to the area and try to push people outside their comfort zones while at the same time staying true to the ideals of what life is like here. Most days you can catch people relaxing in the oak-scattered hills, looking over the valley and really taking in what this beautiful landscape has to offer. We draw huge inspiration from our environment, which you see represented in many of our projects.

Which renovation element do you think gave you the ‘most improved’ effect?

Our staple when designing homes is to make sure that the seamless indoor/outdoor idea of living comes through in most of the common spaces in the home. So when we start a new project we always try and find a way to make sure we create that idea in as many rooms as we can. Typically, we end up blowing out a few walls leading to the outdoor spaces and we install giant walls of glass that slide away and disappear into the walls. Once the door is fully open the space is immediately one with the outside. With this project we actually had to completely tear down the back of the house and rebuild it to make sure we achieved that feeling in the main living/kitchen/dining space.

Which renovation idea gave you the biggest impact for smallest investment?

It’s really hard to say what the biggest bang for your buck is when you’re doing a complete interior and exterior gut and remodel to a whole home because everything is new. That being said, we would probably say that replacing your floors will make the biggest interior impact for a smaller investment. There are so many flooring options out there now and prices are fairly reasonable. If you’re relatively handy, installation is a breeze and the impact it will make is huge – it can completely transform an interior space!

What is your favourite room post-renovation?

Our favourite room post-renovation is the main living space, which used to be the master bedroom and had the only access to the pool. We completely turned the floor plan on its head and switched a lot of the spaces out to create a better flow in the house. We decided that the main living space needed to be right at the pool – I mean who doesn’t want to step out of your living room and dive right in? This section of the house was not true to the original mid-century of the front (it was an addition that had been done in the 70s). We chose to tear it down completely and rebuild it to pay homage to the style of the rest of the home. This allowed us to rethink this space to create an open floorplan and high vaulted ceilings.

What element of the reno do people always comment on?

Most people, right off the bat, are impressed by how we reconfigured the space. We took a 2100 square foot house and made it feel like 3000. The high vaulted ceilings, the large glass openings and a more sensible layout make the home feel a lot larger and most people are surprised when they come back to the entry and see the second living space.

What was the trickiest part of the reno?

The trickiest part of renovating a space is not knowing what could be under the house or behind the walls. When buying an older home you always have the unknowns and it can prove more difficult than just starting from scratch. We had to completely

gut and redo all the electrical and plumbing because it was ancient. I mean we are talking duck-taped wires hidden in the walls – nightmare! But what can also be tricky, especially here in California, is getting an older home up to code. You have to be smart about the decisions you make and sometimes things are just not possible in the budget you’re given.

What reno idea are you most proud of?

We have to say it’s definitely the exterior! We decided to go full-tilt with the original mid-century look of the house in an area that generally doesn’t blend seamlessly with that aesthetic. The landscape’s large cacti, low-maintenance grasses, succulents and olive trees blended together to create a very natural-looking California environment at the end of a suburban cul de sac. The existing stucco was scraped down and recoated using a plaster finish to give it that modelled marble look and the old wood siding was replaced to give it a softer yet modern appeal. The house’s stucco and siding facelift juxtaposed with the arid natural landscaping really came together better then we could’ve hoped.

Any future projects in mind for the home?

We actually sold the house recently but the new owners are planning on adding on an art studio! In the next few months, we will break ground so follow along with us to see what comes next. @hommeboys www.hommeboys.com

ADELE HADFIELD was a headstrong independent woman before she was shot dead by her foul-tempered second husband William Knowles. She was a lady of fine breeding, one of the landed gentry of Nelson, so it comes as little surprise that the story of her death (she had earlier fallen pregnant to her then lover before they married) has long been a skeleton in the closet of the Wilson family.

Raising nine children at Awaroa settlement with her first husband William Hadfield, Adele’s descendants today operate guided walks on the same land she trod, now known as Abel Tasman National Park in New Zealand’s South Island. Her portrait dominates the living room of Meadowbank Homestead.

After a morning’s hiking with Senior Guide Lucy Hodgson, who is the partner of Adele’s great, great grandson Darryl Wilson, the story of Adele’s tragic 58

death unfolds over lunch at the clifftop homestead overlooking Awaroa Inlet.

Beautiful as the landscape is, it’s easy to appreciate Adele’s loneliness, having arrived at this remote outpost as a newly-wed 18 year old in the 1870’s. An ancient gnarled tree, known as the Dog Tree, survives from the days when she restrained the farm dogs by chain.

Abel Tasman National Park is blessed with an abundance of golden beaches bookended by dramatic clusters of granite boulders. Forest-clad hills tumble into the Tasman Sea. Dolphins and penguins inhabit the calm sea, fur seals bask supine on rocks. In a wind shadow and graced with a mild Mediterranean climate, the Nelson Tasman region claims New Zealand honours for the highest average hours of sunshine per day.

The park is interwoven with 54 km of walking trails, making it ideal for a guided

walking adventure between well-equipped lodges within the park. The trails are spectacular. Tracks run alongside boulderstrewn streams, across the odd swing or fixed bridge, atop ridges affording expansive sea views or across far-flung beaches kissed by gin-clear sea. All the while walkers are accompanied by bellbirds or curious tail-wiggling fantails pouncing on insects disturbed by our footfall. Spaced periodically along the trails are basic overnight huts, flushing or compost toilets and filtered drinking water taps.

The pretty coastal village of Kaiteriteri is the natural connection for Abel Tasman hikers transitioning to bikes to ride the Great Taste Trail. Covering approximately 66 km, the Great Taste Trail Coastal Route is a relaxed self-guided bike ride across gently rolling terrain between Nelson and Kaiteriteri. The Great Taste Trail passes through vineyards, apple orchards, alongside grazing paddocks or beaches, past galleries, cafés and at least 20 boutique breweries or distilleries. There are plenty of leisurely diversions for sampling local produce or meeting the locals who call this enchanted region home. Try Jellyfish in a converted apple shed at Mapua

for devilish slow-cooked lamb shanks, rambling Jester House Café, poking fun at nursery rhymes including quirky accommodation in a boot at the bottom of the garden. Riverside Café is run by the residents of the Riverside Community, established by conscientious objectors to the second world war. Vineyards worth calling into for cellar door tastings and lunch include Neudorf Vineyards and Waimea Estate With most of the route on designated cycle paths, the Gentle Cycling Company takes care of pesky logistics like transporting luggage to your overnight digs. The only decisions you’ll need to

make are where to stop for lunch, beer or wine tastings. The Gentle Cycling Company has support vehicles on hand to address any maintenance issues, plus they’ll pick you up and return you to Nelson at the end of your ride.

Chicken & mushroom risotto Carb Refuel Serves 4 12g dried porcini mushrooms 2 chicken stock cubes 1 tbsp coconut oil 1 large leek, trimmed, washed and finely chopped 5 sprigs of thyme 400g skinless and boneless chicken thighs, cut into 2cm pieces 300g mushrooms, brushed clean and roughly chopped into 2cm chunks 225g arborio rice small bunch of parsley, roughly chopped small bunch of chives, finely chopped juice of 1 lemon salt and black pepper Pour enough boiling water over the dried mushrooms to cover them generously, then leave to soak. Drop the stock cubes into a jug and, using boiling water, make up 750ml of stock.

Melt half of the oil in a large saucepan over a medium to high heat, then slide in the leek and thyme. Stir and cook for 2 minutes, then cover and leave to sweat for 2 minutes.

Take the lid off and crank up the heat to maximum. Add the chicken thigh pieces and a third of the chopped mushrooms.

Cook, stirring every now and again, for 2 minutes. Slide in the rice and stir in to combine with the other ingredients.

Drain the sodden mushrooms and leave to one side, measuring out 150ml of the liquid. Pour the liquid into the pan with the sodden mushrooms and allow it to bubble up.

For the next 20 minutes, add a ladleful of the stock at a time to the rice, while constantly stirring. Don’t add too much stock to the pan otherwise you will lower the heat, which increases the cooking time. After 20 minutes you should have incorporated all of the stock into the pan, and you should be looking down at a creamy risotto – the rice should be just soft to the bite.

Put a lid on and leave the risotto to sit for a couple of minutes.

Meanwhile, melt the remaining oil in a large frying pan over a high heat, then add the remaining mushrooms. Fry without turning for 1 minute to caramelise.

Add the mushrooms to the risotto along with the chopped parsley, chives and lemon juice. Stir, taste for seasoning then serve.

Kofta-stuffed romano peppers Reduced Carb Serves 4 4 large Romano peppers, halved lengthways, seeds removed 10ml olive oil 1 tbsp coconut oil 2 red onions, peeled and finely sliced 3 cloves garlic, finely chopped 1 aubergine, trimmed and diced into 1cm cubes (250g) 250g lamb mince 250g beef mince 1⁄2 tsp ground cinnamon 1 tsp ground cumin 1⁄2 tsp sweet smoked paprika salt and black pepper 1 tbsp tomato puree 100ml beef stock 70g pine nuts 1⁄2 bunch of coriander, roughly chopped 225g pizza mozzarella, patted dry rocket, to serve

Preheat the oven to 210°C (fan 190°C/gas mark 6–7).

Lay the peppers on a baking tray in a single layer, drizzle over the olive oil and roast in the hot oven for 20 minutes.

Meanwhile, melt the coconut oil in a large frying pan over a medium to high heat, then add the red onion and garlic and fry for 3 – 4 minutes or until just soft.

Crank up the heat to maximum and add the aubergine and both types of mince. Fry the ingredients over the high heat, stirring occasionally for a few minutes, breaking up the mince with a wooden spoon. Sprinkle in the cinnamon, cumin and paprika and stir to incorporate.

Season with a generous amount of salt and pepper, then add the tomato puree along with the beef stock and let the mixture simmer away – you don’t want it to be too wet. After a couple of minutes, turn the heat off and stir through the pine nuts and chopped coriander.

Remove the roasted peppers from the oven. They should have collapsed a little but still be holding their shape. Carefully drain off liquid that may have been produced while roasting, then fill the cavities with the mixture. Don’t worry if the mixture falls over the side.

Slice or tear the mozzarella and arrange over the top of the mince, then slide the tray back into the oven and bake for a further 10 minutes. The mozzarella will have melted nicely by this point. Serve up with a generous helping of rocket.

Mini strawb pavlovas Sweet Treats Makes 6 4 eggs, whites only 200g caster sugar 1⁄2 tsp white wine vinegar 1 tsp cornflour 400g strawberries, stalk removed and berry cut into thin slices (pound-coin thickness) juice of 1⁄2 lemon 3 tsp icing sugar 400ml double cream 3 digestive biscuits

Preheat the oven to 180°C (fan 160°C/gas mark 4).

Place the egg whites in a large clean bowl and whisk well until light and fluffy and able to hold their own weight. Add 1 tablespoon of sugar and whisk for about 30 seconds before adding another. Continue this process, ensuring you don’t add more than 1 tablespoon of sugar at a time, and giving the mix a good whisk until all the sugar is used up and the egg whites are very stiff and glossy.

Add the white wine vinegar and the cornflour and whisk again.

Continue to whisk for a good 2 – 3 minutes to be sure that all the ingredients are absolutely mixed together.

When you are happy with the mix, dollop six large mounds of meringue onto a flat baking tray lined with non-stick baking parchment. Using the back of a spoon, push the centre of each mound down a little to create a nest shape.

Slide the nests into the oven and immediately reduce the heat to 100°C (fan 80°C/gas mark 1⁄4). Leave the nests to cook like this for 30 minutes, then turn the oven off and leave to cool.

Meanwhile, mix the strawberries and lemon juice in a bowl, then sieve over the icing sugar. Leave to sit until you’re ready to eat.

Just before serving, whisk up the double cream until it’s just thick enough to hold its own weight.

Carefully sit the mini pavlovas on a serving plate, dollop on some double cream and top with the strawberries. Crumble over the digestive biscuits and serve immediately.

NOTE: Use a clean mixing bowl to whisk up the eggs and sugar and don’t rush when spooning in the sugar.

I was born in Ingham and grew up in Townsville. I remember going on weekend road trips all over North Queensland from Cairns and the tablelands to the Whitsundays and everywhere in between.

What does your work involve now?

My work consists of managing multiple bars, restaurants, pub and convention centres. I’m a workaholic, putting in many long hours a day, but when I step back and see how my efforts give guests fantastic experiences it makes it all worthwhile.

Where are you now?

I’m currently living amongst the hustle and bustle of Sydney. It’s very different to Queensland. We do things at such a fast pace that on my days off it’s nice to get to the beaches like I used to do in Queensland.

How did living in North Queensland set you up for success?

Once I finished school I got a job with Rydges Hotels and worked my way up the corporate ranks into management very quickly. I learnt a lot though studying and on the job.

I still keep in contact with a few mentors from years ago.

Do you still come ‘home’ to visit?

Yes, every couple of months I fly back home to visit family.

My mother and brothers mean the world to me. My younger brother has cerebral palsy, so I like to support my family when I can.

I’m currently a meditation teacher and facilitate retreats and do private mentoring, helping people work out where they want to be in life. I worked in TV for almost 30 years in quite high-stress environments. A few years ago I had to make a change in my life due to a cancer diagnosis and it literally changed everything in a great way. Since then, I still do some TV consulting work, but my main focus now is helping people who live busy lives find their inner peace so they can respond to life instead of reacting to life from a stressed state.

How did living in North Queensland set you up for success?

It gave me the best training I could ever have asked for when I first started out in TV. At 23 I ended up moving to Hong Kong for three years and then Malaysia for a year and London for three, where I launched 42 channels in Asia, as well as Disney Channel in the UK. If I hadn’t had the broad range of training in Townsville at TEN, there’s no way I would’ve been able to do that at such a young age.

Do you still come ‘home’ to visit?

I always come home for Easter and Christmas as my family is still up in Ingham. I get asked to come and teach in Cairns and Townsville and Mackay, so when I do I make a trip up for that. I’d love to build a community up there so I can come back more often. www.geoffrupp.com

I grew up in Townsville and went to school at Pimlico State High School before studying at the Barrier Reef Institute of TAFE. Where are you now?

I’m a full-time musician, recording, writing and travelling within Australia and overseas as the seasons change. I’ve spent the last two winters in Hobart writing and recording. Tasmania is really beautiful and I find it a super-inspiring place to work from. Over the summers I’ve been on the road performing and touring.

My original compositions are a reflection of my love of the jazz and folk music from the early 20th Century and of the nomadic lifestyle. I perform a mix of gypsy-folk and blues.

How did living in North Queensland set you up for success?

FNQ definitely influenced the style of music I create and was such a nurturing and encouraging place to start out.

A lot of the other creative artists from the North helped to shape the person I am.

What are you currently working on?

I’ve just finished producing an album called ‘Night Visions’ that features songs built around layers of voice recordings, synth samples and ambient and environmental noise. It’s a little different from previous releases so it’s a bit scary to send them out into the world!

Do you still come ‘home’ to visit?

Yes! I try to return a few times a year to visit my family and friends and most years return for Palm Creek Folk Festival.

What’s your link to North Queensland?

I was born in Ayr but when I was six months old my family packed up and made the move to Townsville. I lived there until I was 22 before heading south.

Where are you now?

For the last seven years I’ve been living in beautiful Melbourne.

I absolutely adore it here. The weather is amazing, the culture is so vast, and it’s a major creative hub. It’s a bustling metropolis of music, art, food and you really never know who you will meet or see around.

What does your work involve?

I’m a full-time freelance photographer and stylist. I photograph musicians for press shots, single/album artwork and live performances and tours. Some of my clients have included The 1975, Angus & Julia Stone, DJ Tigerlily, Vera Blue, Montaigne, Peking Duk and fellow Queenslander Amy Shark.

How did living in North Queensland set you up for success?

I took photography as a subject in Year 12 at Kirwan High–if it hadn’t been for that year of exploring the craft of photography, I would never have considered making a career out of it 20 years later. Thanks Mr Smith!

What are you currently working on?

At the moment, I’m planning for a shoot with an amazing New Zealand singer named Robinson. I’m also still finishing up my projects with Amy Shark and Peking Duk and I’m starting to plan a couple of projects with some clothing brands as I also shoot fashion.

Do you still come ‘home’ to visit?

Yes of course! I usually come up two or three times a year. I often have friends who play on the Groovin’ the Moo festival, so I will come up with them to work and take extra time to see family and friends, walk the goat track and hit up Otto’s for an iced coffee and cinnamon scroll. www.sheisaphrodite.com

What’s the funniest thing that’s ever happened to you? I was in Dysart in Central Queensland. We went to a bar and this guy tried to convince me that he was a Goanna Drover and he was taking them up to the Northern Territory. I think he’d had one too many drinks, but I still laugh about that now.

Mick Fleetwood from Fleetwood Mac. My husband Mick and I went to see them in Brisbane and about 20 of us had a private meeting with him and nothing was off limits, so amazing.

Who do you know that really reminds you of a character in a TV show or movie? My bridesmaid Denise (God rest her soul) was so like Goldie Hawn – loved her.

My motto is: If you want something badly enough you will find a way to get it. (Legally through hard work and by staying positive).

Recently, in my newborn phase (at 2am), I ordered some amazing looking clothes online.

I remembered them a few weeks later and tracked my delivery. They were coming from China (oops!). Eventually I received the 4 dresses and attempted to try them on – I wasn’t very successful. My girlfriend took photos and had tears streaming down her face from laughter – they were awful!

What’s one thing about you that surprises people? I backpacked solo around Europe for six months.

If you could be anyone famous, who would it be and why? Nigella Lawson. She is very talented and has serious cooking and language skills (who else can say ‘luscious’ and ‘exquisite’ when describing a crouton in quite the same way?!)

Who or what are you most grateful for? My family. I have healthy and amazing children, a hard working and supportive partner and all the grandparents have moved here from interstate (to beautiful sunny Townsville) to help us raise our little family!

Who’s Someone famous you’ve met & where?

I worked at Crown Towers (hotel) so I’ve met a few famous people. Some stand outs are Pink, Stirling Moss and Will Smith (I had to go and buy his sister a strapless bra for a movie premier). In Townsville the most famous person I’ve met is Aaron Power.

What’s your favourite or dream destination?

Currently, with two kids, it’s the Big 4 in Airlie Beach with the massive water slides. But if just my partner and I, it would be 3 months driving through Switzerland, Germany and Austria (with a stop in Slovenia to see family).

If you were arrested with no explanation, what would your friends and family assume you had done? Hmmm... I’m pretty law abiding so I asked my mum and she said ‘drunk and disorderly’.

Nice one mum! This however is soooo far from my current reality.

My motto is: Have courage. You never know where it will lead you.

The entire Take That collection on CD and video including singles. I was hooked when I was a teenager! Who doesn’t love a good boy band??

What’s one thing about you that surprises people? How educated I am. I have a couple of degrees up my sleeve over the years and I think because I’m tall and blonde, people make their own assumptions about what society says.

Exercise or Meditation? Meditation… everytime!

As a single mum of two very demanding (but gorgeous) kids, I need to make sure that I’m in alignment at all times.

If you were a Superhero who would you be? Super Girl. I’ve always been obsessed with wanting to fly from a young age. It’s still there by the way!

Who or what are you most grateful for? My parents! Apparently we choose our parents and I know why. They are always there for me, and I can always count on them no matter the circumstances. I hope my kids say the same about me one day.

What’s your hidden talent? I can do the Running Man like nobody’s business!

What’s your all-time favourite memory? As a kid we used to live near the race course. I loved horses! So much so that my sister and I would sit outside on the footpath with our one and two cent pieces trying to buy the horses that walked past.

We submitted our application along with an example of how we’ve supported one of our client’s businesses through the use of Intuit QuickBooks Online and were thrilled to be announced as one of five global finalists alongside finalists from the United States, Canada, United Kingdom and India. Intuit sent a former CNN Producer, David Timko, to visit us late last year to record a two-minute video of ‘a day in the life of’ for the final part of the competition. We didn’t get the global win, but as a finalist it was an incredible experience to be in Silicon Valley, checking out all the latest technology in our industry. Expanding your business Always an exciting prospect, but you need to PLAN What a privilege for us, to advertise in our favourite local magazine, and now expanded to further regions within Queensland.

Whilst our core business is focused in the Townsville area, we have been quietly working all over Queensland for many years, so it is a delight to be a part of this regional expansion for DUO. Working from more than one location certainly has its challenges, but depending on the type of business you have, expanding doesn’t always have to be a dream. It also doesn’t have to be limited either. It may be that you expand your product or services online or overseas, but it all must be meticulously planned in order to be a potential success.

This means research. Is there room for your business in the market and if it is a bit crowded, what edge will your business have over your competitors? Will you follow the same model you use in your current location, or will it be different? Will you have the same staff or will you need to recruit new people?

Then comes the planning and of course budgeting. You can’t have one without the other.

It’s one thing to plan for the optimum outcome, but if your budget is not set and is not accurate, this could be a recipe for disaster from the start.

And one thing we know for sure, if you need to lend money to fund your expansion, 80

Most business owners can relate, you have to start somewhere. I can’t count how many stories I have heard, from the most wealthy and successful business owners and now self-funded retirees, that they all faced that feeling of being cash strapped, overwhelmed, and vulnerable to the banks and other lenders at some point in their lives, and it was almost always during times of growth and expansion.

That bootstrapping process of scraping together every last cent you can from every avenue you can find, to achieve your dream is common. So is sometimes considering asking for help from a family member. We would always suggest such a request be supported by good communication, a solid plan, and a formal agreement so you remain accountable, with a way of paying back their generosity.

Your next option is the banks and other lending institutions. But be prepared as nothing is ‘easy’ with lending these days.

You should expect a lengthy process and more stringent compliance checks post the Banking Royal Commission.

Then there is a concept called ‘Angel Investing’, which is the next level playing field, but exciting to learn about all the same, even if it is an unlikely option for your situation.

Your plan should be prepared on start-up, reviewed often, and recreated when attending to an expansion of any kind. Introduce this plan to your team (i.e. accountant, lawyer, financial advisor and lender) because each one should give you more to add.

After the plan is set, the expansion is up to you!

Single Touch Payroll.

What it is and why you NEED to know about it

If you own / run a business, the changes that are being introduced for Single Touch Payroll (STP) are very important for you to be aware of. Especially how it might impact you (and your business).

STP was introduced 1 July 2018, for employers with 20 or more employees. As of 5th December 2018, the Government passed legislation that also requires employers with 19 or less employees to participate in STP from 1 July 2019.

Breaking down STP So what is STP? The ATO (Australian Taxation Office) website says: “Single Touch Payroll is a change to the way employers report their employees’ tax and super information to the ATO.” Helpful right?

Well for those of us that don’t speak ATO lingo, the changes are in relation to the timing and the reporting of employee payroll information. Currently you (or your employer) would lodge payroll information in your IAS, BAS, Tax Return & Empdupe.

Now with STP, you will be required to lodge a ‘Pay Event’ via your accounting software (or manually if you enjoy doing things the hard way) each time you process a pay run (regardless of whether it is weekly, fortnightly or monthly).

The pay event information includes, each individual employee’s: - Gross Pay - PAYGW - Net Pay - Superannuation

The reason the ATO is rolling out this change is to increase improvement of data-matching financial information.
