CARS, FOOTBALL, LIFE. ALL WRAPPED UP. Here’s a little story about mileage and time. An old mate of mine used to make a very good living selling used cars on the side of the road or out of the newspaper classifieds. Sometimes, to make the vehicle a more attractive buy, he’d shave a few thousand miles off the odometer with an electric drill set in reverse. After quite a few years and a few dozen cars he was laying on his back on the floor of a mini one day, the drill in one hand and a torch in the other, when he looked up and saw, written on the back of the odometer – Oh no,not again! Come with me on this next bit and hopefully I can wrap it all together... A philosopher mate, well known for his knowledge of history and forthright views and who’s quickly nearing 60, has a great analogy for life – it’s the 80 minutes of a game of rugby league. His rationale is that Australian men can pretty much make it to their mid 80’s. The bit between 70 and 80 is when you’re slowing up, the old footy (life) injuries come back and you really don’t want to play much anyway. That means when you’re nearing 60 (like him) you really only have between now and 70 to do all the things you said you were going to do when you were 30, 40, 50. That’s around 10 to 14 years. A blink? That depends. Although we’ve been piling on the mileage (I’m getting there) and while we can’t wind back the odometer, there’s still at least a quarter of the game yet to play (we made it). And I plan to be going to the Grand Final in a Maserati Quattroporte Ermenegildo Zegna Limited Edition! Tell us something about yourself: I love being outdoors. I recently completed Certificate 3 and 4 in Fitness and now work as a Personal Trainer. What have you got going on at the moment? I’m working part time as a personal trainer, working towards setting up my own Personal Training business. In the future I’m hoping to study Nutrition to add to my PT business. What would surprise people to know about you? I grew up on cattle stations and lived all over the place. From the Northern Territory back down to Central Queensland. Like many new mums, Michella Manolis found the first 12 weeks of motherhood took some getting used to. “Everything I said I wasn’t going to do I ended up doing,” Michella says. “Before I had Pia I thought ‘I’m not nursing or rocking to sleep, that’s a bad habit I need to stay away from’ and ‘no we won’t use a dummy and she won’t ever sleep in our bed…’ My husband George and I do all of the above and more, I’m sure I’m forgetting due to sleep deprivation!”
He was a week late but when Reuben Valentino arrived Dana Zolli and Mark Brine were delighted to discover they were the proud parents of a beautiful baby boy. “We opted to wait to find out the sex, so it was a nice surprise when Reuben was born,” Dana says. “The first time we saw the little person we’d created was the happiest day of our lives.”
Breastfeeding made it difficult to plan out the day down to the minute as Michella had hoped to do, so now the family has loosened up the schedule and that’s keeping everyone happy. Watching Pia play and seeing the look on her face when she discovers something new is keeping Michella and George smiling as they enjoy parenthood. “It’s a privilege to be there for those moments,” Michella says. “I can’t believe how much I love her and every day I fall more in love with her if that’s possible!” George is smitten too, happily dealing with dirty nappies and play dates. “He’s addicted to buying her cute clothes. I think her wardrobe is bigger than ours put together,” Michella laughs. “I love to watch George nurse Pia to sleep when she’s having a bad night.” Michella’s mum also comes over most days to look after Pia while she works. “They get to spend a lot of quality time together, which is nice I think. Both my grandparents weren’t with us growing up, so I like that she has them so close to her.”

As someone who believes knowledge is power, Dana did a lot of reading prior to having Reuben. “But after his birth I found the endless information about baby care confusing,” she says. “Luckliy a friend suggested I speak to Nicole Pierotti from Babysmiles and she gave me the confidence to set a routine. Now I swear by routine because it keeps you sane and allows you to get a good night’s sleep!” As the owner of A Touch of Salt, Mark works nights, which comes in handy for late-night feeds. “Both our mums have also been very supportive and loving,” Dana says. “They’re never short of good advice and are always available when needed. I can’t describe how lucky I am to have such inspirational women in my life!” On Mother’s Day, Dana is hoping for breakfast in bed and the rest of the day spent with her two boys. Oh and: “I’d love a bottle of Michael Kors perfume. Hint, hint Mark.”

Chloe and baby Leila Since baby Leila entered their universe, Chloe Healy and her husband Jonathon have discovered just how little sleep they can survive on. “It’s hard work but it’s the most amazing experience,” Chloe says. “I love watching Leila giggling in her sleep or waking up and stretching her little arms. The look on her face as she takes everything in is adorable.” Despite needing an emergency Caesarian, Chloe says she loved labour. “I’m 100 per cent sure I was subconsciously waiting for my doctor to come back from her trip to go into labour,” she says. “She arrived home on the 9th and I went into labour naturally just after 12am on the 10th. I laboured until 9pm that night but Leila’s heart rate was extremely high so, at 9.30pm, I had to have a C-section. Even so, I loved labour and would do it again. It was the most amazing thing knowing what I was doing.” Chloe feels she’s probably “too attentive” as a new mum but says Jonathan is very relaxed about things so they balance each other out. “Jono is really good with Leila,” Chloe says. “He usually gets her to sleep within 10 minutes after I’ve been trying for hours! “I thought I’d be more chilled out but the need to look after Leila is way more overwhelming than I expected. I can’t believe how much you worry about them. You totally get where your parents have come from all those years when they get mad at you because they were ‘worried’.”

Ashleigh and baby Lakia Ashleigh Sudholz and her partner, Cowboys player Tariq Sims, count themselves lucky that their little girl is a very content and relaxed baby. “She only cries if you’re taking too long to feed her,” Ashleigh says. “Our labour was pretty straightforward too, which is a good thing because she came six weeks early and I never really had a birth plan.” “I was given a lot of advice like ‘have a natural birth’, ‘breast feeding is the only way’ and ‘do/don’t get her vaccinated’. I noticed everyone had their opinion, and usually a strong one, but you know your body and your baby better then anyone else, so my advice is do what you feel is best for both of you and will work with your lifestyle.” While everyone says that seeing your child for the first time is like no other experience, Ashleigh says nothing could have prepared her for that moment. “People always tell you that it’s instant love and joy but, until you’ve experienced it yourself, it’s impossible to explain,” Ashleigh says. “I never understood it until I held Lakia for the first time.” To help her settle into motherhood, Ashleigh’s mum came over for two weeks to be there in case she was needed. “Just to know she was there made it so much easier,” Ashleigh says. “The support of family is what makes the experience so much more enjoyable and precious.” Tariq has proved himself to be an extremely hands-on father as well. “If there were an award for father of the year, he would definitely be a contender,” Ashleigh says. “While I was still pregnant he asked if he could be the one to change Lakia’s first nappy. To say he’s excited to be a father is an understatement. Seeing him with Lakia is one of my favourite things to watch.”

nouveau mamas Brittney and baby Brooklyn Brittney McGlone and Cowboys player James Tamou welcomed their baby into the world on the 31st of August 2013 at 11:31pm. “James and my mum Kerry were with me the whole way though my labour,” Brittney says. “The pain was well worth it once I heard his little cry just as he was born.” Now Brooklyn is seven months old and just starting to crawl, so everyone has to be on their toes as he’s very active. “James always sings to him. Like me, he can’t go a day without him so it gets hard when he goes away for his footy games,” Brittney says. “I’m absolutely enjoying being a mum. I love walking into Brooklyn’s room first thing in the morning. To see the look on his face just melts my heart. He’s such a happy baby all the time, which makes my life a lot easier with both James and I full-time training with our sports.” “Being a mum is the most rewarding thing. I can’t express that enough. Brooklyn’s changed both of our lives for the better.” For mums-to-be Brittney has these words of encouragement: “I’m still training full-time so my message for new mums is that you can still achieve what you want in life.”

It’s official! Your home is on the market! For weeks or months, you’ve been preparing your home for sale. After careful consideration, you are confident in your choice of agent and together you have a comprehensive marketing plan that can’t fail. Your expectations are high for a sale within six weeks.
So now your hard work is done, you sit back, relax and ready yourself for the constant stream of potential buyers. ‘Who wouldn’t fall in love with this place the minute they see it?’ Why then, does it come as such an unexpected shock when there’s an offer sitting on the table within the first few days? You’re serious about selling. You’ve worked in partnership with your agent and feel comfortable with the strategy that is going to set you up for success. You trust them … but have you really tested the market when only a select few have viewed your property? The initial excitement of an offer is left behind, as the anxiety of an early offer threatens to send you into an anxious spiral. Todays’ market is a market where buyers don’t wait, and a market where the next offer won’t necessarily be right around the corner. It could be weeks, or even month’s away and failing to consider each offer on its individual merits could prove extremely costly, both financially AND emotionally.

Don’t think it’s hasty and don’t become overconfident in the market: Consider the recent research of sales in your area and listen to the advice of your agent. It’s easy to get caught up in taking advice from people that might not fully understand the market. This is a very important decision and a specialist (like your agent) should be the person with the most up to date information on what’s really happening in the marketplace. Activity and interest is highest in the first 14 days a property is listed. More often than not, the highest price comes when your home is a fresh listing. If you are not supported by the right research or advice from your agent, and reject these early offers without proper consideration it may result in disappointment. Qualified buyers make real offers. Sure, it might be the first person to look at your property but it may be that they have been looking for 12 months. These buyers are informed and have a strong understanding of market value. Often they have a fear of missing out and they pounce on new properties of interest immediately.
Some of the best offers can happen in these early stages. The number of buyers for your home usually gets lower, not higher, as time goes on and the price often decreases along with interest. Each offer is a sign of interest and a starting point for negotiation. In the current market where buyers have a plethora of choice don’t let them walk away without your agent undertaking effective negotiations. These buyers are already interested but will move onto the next property in a heartbeat if they don’t feel their own expectations are being met. The best agents are those who find the best buyer willing to pay the best price in the shortest time and with the least cost to you. Bargain hunters are not real offers. Bargain hunters will try to offer much less than what your property is worth. Your agent should ensure these ‘offers’ are eliminated quickly. Ultimately, you chose your agent for a reason. It’s imperative to have confidence and trust in the specialist advice provided, and to allow your agent to navigate you logically through the process of an early offer.

COCONUT OIL TREATS ALZHEIMER’S The natural oil has a variety of health benefits, including levelling oral hygiene, protecting and healing skin, boosting the metabolism and many more. New research is now suggesting coconut oil is also a treatment for Alzheimer’s Disease. Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCTs), the primary type of fat in coconut oil has been found to improve cognitive function in older adults suffering from memory disorders. Just a small dosage (40ml or a couple of tablespoons) of coconut oil can immediately increase brain activity and counteract breakdowns in energy production. WHAT IS VITAMIN D AND WHY IS IT IMPORTANT? If hand and wrist pain during pregnancy or baby’s first year are causing you problems, a hand therapist can help.
There’s a long list of ailments pregnant women know they have to endure, such as morning sickness, back ache, tender breasts and bloating. But what about finger and hand pain? Or sharp wrist pain once the baby comes along… No one told you about that did they? The most common cause of hand pain in pregnant women is carpal tunnel syndrome, and after birth de Quervain’s tendonopathy is generally the cause of wrist pain. Let’s take a look at both of these conditions. Pregnancy-related Carpal Tunnel Syndrome If you have tingling, numb and painful hands during pregnancy it’s likely to be caused by carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). CTS is common in pregnancy and happens when there’s a build-up of fluid in the tissues in your wrist. This swelling places pressure on your median nerve, which causes the tingling and numbness in your hand. You may also experience a lack of coordination and grip in your fingers and hands. Symptoms can appear at any time but most commonly begin in the second or

third trimester, along with swelling of your hands. If you’re like many pregnant women, you’ll most likely have symptoms at night. Whenever you feel twinges, shift your sleeping position as this may alleviate a great deal of discomfort. Other self-help tips include trying not to sleep on your hands and keeping your wrists straight when you sleep. It can also be useful to make a gentle fist throughout the day if it relieves your pain and avoid jobs requiring repetitive or prolonged gripping. If the pain and numbness starts to interfere with your sleep or daily routine consult your hand therapist. You may require a wrist splint for night/day use or a compression glove to control your swelling. Paraffin wax baths, soft-tissue treatment and retrograded massage can all help to reduce your pain. De Quervain’s Tendonopathy De Quervain’s tenosynovitis is a painful problem caused by irritation of the tendons that move the thumb sideways away from the palm. It can result in wrist and forearm pain on the side of the thumb, particularly
with certain wrist movements. New mothers (and grandmothers!) in particular experience this condition due to the hand and wrist postures used to pick up and nurse the baby, push strollers and carry capsules. A splint that restricts thumb and wrist movement is often needed to allow the tendon to rest completely. A hand therapist can custom-make a light, washable, thermoplastic splint to ensure a correct fit. The splint allows a new mother to continue to care for their baby with far less pain. Hand therapists can also help identify aggravating activities and suggest alternative postures and techniques to ensure you can continue to pick up your baby safely. The treatment focus is to repair the damaged tissues and reduce pain and swelling. As well as education and splinting, hand therapy also includes massage, heat, ice and other treatments such as ultrasound and dry needling aimed at reducing pain during the healing phase.

MUM’S THE WORD – IF SHE CAN HEAR YOU! Hearing loss can be a common problem for women as they age, but help is at hand.
If you take your mother or grandmother out for Mother’s Day this month, take note if you see them withdrawing from the conversation, appear isolated, quiet, or alternatively avoid going out altogether. These responses may seem attitudinal or psychological in nature, but very frequently they are just the consequence of a hearing loss. It is quite common for people with a hearing loss to be incorrectly tagged with psychological stigmas such as depression, rudeness, aloofness, being unsocial, or even early-onset dementia for the more elderly. However, in reality, these responses are just a consequence or reaction to the frustration, anxiety, loneliness and frequent social withdrawal that accompanies not being able to communicate effectively with the world around you. Hearing loss is very common among women of all ages. In Australia, 22 per cent of the population has a hearing problem – of this, 53 per cent are women aged 51 to 70, and 65 per cent are ladies aged over 71. Most hearing losses are attributed to normal cellular degeneration within the hair cells, or cilia, of the inner ear.

From around the age of 17, we begin to lose the cilia within the inner ear. By the time we turn 40, this can become a permanent hearing loss. Between the ages of 40 to 60, this hearing loss is usually pronounced enough to interfere with critical speech sounds. The high-pitched cilia, responsible for providing clear speech, are affected first. The hearing loss is most noticeable when background noise is present and is usually accompanied with tinnitus – a ringing sound in the ears. Another common cause of hearing loss among women is a disease of the middle ear called otosclerosis. It affects about one per cent of the population and is twice as likely to occur in women as men. It commonly begins to arise in early motherhood and is caused by the stiffening of one of the bones within the middle ear called the stapes. This stiffening impairs the movement of the bones and does not allow for the adequate transmission of sound to the inner ear. Symptoms can include tinnitus or clicking sounds in the ears. This type of hearing loss affects all pitches, with the soft sounds going first.
Hearing problems associated with cilia degeneration or otosclerosis, like any hearing loss, should not be left untreated. There are surgical options for otosclerosis involving replacing the stapes. Alternatively, hearing devices are now available to specifically treat all types of hearing loss. These days, most devices are virtually invisible and have advanced features specifically designed to help people either retain or resume an active, social lifestyle. Generally, it is a good idea to see a qualified audiologist once you turn 50 or earlier if there is any significant noise exposure or a family history or if you feel you have any problems with your hearing or just communicating in noisy environments. Early intervention means better outcomes for your long-term hearing, whether it is surgical or aided by hearing devices. This will slow down the deterioration, halt speech nerve loss, allow a more discreet style of hearing device to be worn, and offer much easier transition back to the world of hearing again. At any age or stage of hearing loss, something can be done to reattach loved ones to the world around them.

If you can’t brush, they suggest you chew minty sugar free gum because the taste of mint overpowers the urge to eat. Give it a go. What have you got to lose? What kind of water do you drink? Does it matter to your teeth? You bet! Vitamin water is basically a sugar and caffeine hit. Bore water may contain too much mineral which adversely affects kids’ growing teeth while rain water contains too little. Sipping a glass of water with lemon can slowly dissolve enamel and make teeth sensitive. Bottled water contains no fluoride but Townsville’s tap water does and fluoride combines with calcium to strengthen our tooth enamel. So think before you drink.
HRT toothpaste and menopause We’ve all been trained to brush twice a day since we were toddlers. Now scientists are developing a mint-flavoured toothpaste with the oestrogen hormone that’ll be useful to women who suffer from hot flashes, sleeplessness and a flat libido. The hormone will be absorbed into the lining of the cheeks and pass into the bloodstream. The toothpaste will be easy to use and will stop the problem of forgetting to take the daily dose of “sanity” medication. Strange things that can ruin your smile A beautiful, white smile can make you feel and look younger. However swimming regularly in chlorinated pools can cause enamel wear just like acidic drinks. Hot tea and coffee stain teeth and the temperature changes when switching to icy drinks can also cause tiny craze lines in the front teeth. Diabetes reduces the body’s resistance to infection which may put you at risk for red, swollen gums. Diet pills can reduce saliva levels and put you at risk for tooth decay and gum disease. EXERCISE PHYSIOLOGY EXPLAINED
As an exercise physiologist, two of the first questions I’m often faced with are: “So what do you do? Are you like a physiotherapist or personal trainer?” Unfortunately, the explanation is a little more complex than a one-word answer.
Accredited Exercise Physiologists (AEPs) complete four years of a science-based university degree, specialising in the study of the physiological effects of exercise on the body. The range of study is massive and includes understanding how the body operates under normal conditions, how it works under fatigued/ill/chronic conditions, how the environment affects our physiological responses, how pharmaceutical interactions may change when exercising and understanding the force production requirement for individual movements. As a result, AEPs specialise in the planning and delivery of clinical exercise prescriptions for the prevention or management of chronic and complex conditions. They can also provide education on lifestyle modification strategies, injury prevention, specialised sport training and assessment, suitable duties and return-towork programs. At the completion of their degree, AEPs apply for national registration with ESSA (Exercise and Sports Science Australia) and also as an allied health professional with Medicare, Workcover and private health insurers. So what does all this mean to you and your family?

Inactivity and Health Concerns As most are aware, the prevalence of obesity in Australia is on the rise, and when you add to that the increased risk of cardiovascular disease and musculoskeletal problems, we start to see a very dark picture in the long term. But what of those people at ‘normal’ weight? You may think you’re out of the disease risk zone? However, new-found evidence suggests this is not the case, as risk levels for cancer are still high in those who are inactive. This is especially true for breast cancer where the risk increases by 40 per cent. When we consider that nearly 65 per cent of Australians are not meeting the ‘sufficiently active’ threshold (Australian Health Survey 2011/12), chances are that you or someone close to you have an increased risk of having or developing a chronic long-term condition. The good news is that increasing activity to sufficient levels reduces this risk substantially. So where do you start? Make an appointment with your local AEP and work towards brightening that outlook.
Visiting an AEP All AEP consultations, whether it’s disease prevention or chronic disease management, will start with consideration of your risk factors for participating in activity at different intensity levels. From there the AEP will consider your fitness and/or strength deficits, goals, likes/dislikes, your motivations and barriers, activity history and medications to develop an appropriate activity program tailored to your requirements and/ or health conditions. I use the term activity rather than exercise, as it’s not just about lifting weights at the gym or thrashing yourself until you’re ready to throw up. For some it might be simply increasing your movement around the house or gardening, whereas for others, you may be walking The Strand, swimming or moving in the pool, playing games with the kids or grandkids or maybe getting back into some type of sport. The most important thing the AEP considers is you; your abilities, needs and goals.

Tell us a little about Misha Collection? Misha Collection launched its first official collection in October 2013. Our designs encompass statement pieces that flatter the female form. Created with utmost attention to detail, each piece personifies understated glamour and class. Our collection features a tightly edited selection of cutting edge styles and accessories for each season. How would you describe Misha Collection in just three words? Timeless, elegant, chic. Misha Collection has had unbelievable growth in just one year, what do you attribute this to? Understanding the consumer’s needs and discovering a gap in the market for high-end styles at affordable prices. Two additional components behind Misha Collection’s success derive immensely from PR [public relations] and social media platforms. You used to work in advertising, has this prior experience helped you in the fashion world? No, however my past experiences working as an assistant buyer and involvement in product development for numerous fashion brands have certainly given me the knowledge and skill-set I needed in creating and developing Misha Collection. Your designs appear to be popping up all over the place — in music videos and at fashion events. Who are some of the most notable people snapped wearing pieces from your collection? I would have to say Nadia Bartel, Elle Ferguson and Samantha Jade. They have such a huge influence on the fashion industry in Australia. It is fundamental to a brand’s growth to select relevant bloggers and celebrities to represent and promote it. It’s always exciting to see celebrities and socialites wearing MC [Misha Collection designs] at red carpet events.
Who are some of your favourite fashion icons and designers? Dolce, Valentino, Gucci…. They all have such an amazing essence of class and elegance. What piece from your collection most represents your personality and why? The Felicienne corset dress in black is my favourite piece from the AW14 collection. It epitomises femininity, simplicity and class with its below-the-knee length and tightly structured corset. I personally avoid showing too much skin — less is more. What are your red-hot fashion tips for the Winter 2014 season? Wear sheer and wear it well! Long sleeves or a high neckline will ensure a chic look when exposing skin in a sheer or midriff-revealing ensemble. Invest in a good quality, relaxed trench coat in a neutral colour. This will form a staple in your winter wardrobe. Don’t be afraid to match your outfits. This season’s designs are all about head-to-toe matching prints, whites and monochromes. Misha Collection is more than just a fashion success story; it is a business success story. What advice do you give to young entrepreneurs? To succeed and move forward in any business you must always be evolving and innovating. Staying unique and ahead of the trends is mandatory. Age and experience are not necessary so long as you possess the drive and passion to go above and beyond any obstacles you might face. Creating a successful business is certainly a complicated and difficult task but not impossible with the correct mindset. My advice for anybody contemplating a business venture is to stay motivated even when things don’t go to plan, research vigorously and be decisive.
Where do you draw inspiration from for your designs? My inspiration is mainly drawn from European trends and culture. From a very young age, I have always been fascinated by European food, fashion and overall lifestyle.

Les and I have been married 23 years, we met at the Exchange Hotel 33 years ago. I’m the youngest of four children. My brother Michael and sisters Michele and Jannine all live in Townsville. He did with a 12,000’ skydive! I’ve never said that again. We did the skydive together and it was amazing.

On the wall of my office I have a photo of six men dressed for a game of rugby but sitting on a makeshift raft. While I sometimes look at that photo and marvel at how good looking I was in my younger, trimmed mustachioed days, what really gets me is how much the Brisbane skyline has changed and grown. It’s a real eye-opener into how long ago that really was. This was brought home to me over Easter when all three of my children were home, and ganged up on me at every turn. “Don’t worry, Dad, you are too old to remember” and the like were the phrases which went around and around. That I had the weekend off and the important afternoon nap was needed did not help my cause. “Dad, we’re just taking the car and we’ll be back later” could have been a Harry Chapin line if it did not fit so well. Have I just become old? Have I outlived my usefulness to my children? Am I now that grumpy old man who just wants his yard mowed and the kids to marvel at his greatness of keeping a tidy yard? The answer is, sadly, yes. Dinner at our house is a dangerous place. You have to watch out all the time and show no weakness. If you do, they (meaning the other members of your family) will smell blood and attack you without mercy. Don’t yawn or answer your phone. Don’t stumble over an answer. Any weakness is perceived as an open invitation for full and frank character assessment by the mob. Even my 12 year old son, Andrew, jumps over me.
All I said was that I was tired. I had been away in Bendigo and Melbourne for committee work. The Townsville office was under the pump because I was losing my second staff member to Head Office this year. We were interviewing for a new person and trying to fulfill my obligations as committee chair, MP, and community access point. I was still trying to keep my emails up to date and respond personally to every constituent who contacted me. “You’re always tired, Dad”, was the start as they then, Linda included, did impersonations of me groaning to get up, slamming doors, calling for the remote, complaining about the way the rest of the family puts the clothes in the wash, and the mowing. It was relentless. Yes, they were all mightily pleased with themselves. They guffawed quite a while. At first I tried to shut down the debate. I know all too well what was coming and if you don’t do something drastic like stab Abbie with your fork, it can get away. This time she was too fast. She was up and slamming the doors shut and doing mower impersonations. She was saying that 9am on Sunday was the crack of dawn. Emma was stating as fact that she could hear the door slam from Brisbane. Andrew did his old man groan and creaky walk impersonation. And Linda just sat there egging them on. It was a shameless display of populist government. I went for a nap and then got up and ate all their chocolate. I win!!

As a society we are very focused on intelligence. The more intelligent you are, the better your success right? It’s how you were born. It’s your genetics, you’re smart so you will be successful. Right? Wrong actually. Brains and talent don’t bring about success and a lot of the time spent being so focused on talent and intelligence as we do in business and education, actually hinders achievement. Carol Dweck, a world renowned Stanford psychologist teaches a simple yet groundbreaking idea called ‘mindset’. Mindset is the idea that intelligence isn’t fixed, i.e. you are born intelligent and that is all you will ever need. Her research vast, over decades has shown what all elite sportsmen, businessmen, parents and teachers know, that intelligence is ‘like a muscle, it grows stronger through exercise’ and new challenges. Just by simply teaching children this idea, ‘that their brain was like a muscle and needed exercise to grow’ had a huge impact on their motivation and their grades skyrocketed! So just testing the same maths problems again and again in schools and showing how intelligent you are again and again – doesn’t make the brain more intelligent. It may give you confidence and self esteem, but it doesn’t guarantee that you will be successful in life.

What does is, giving the brain more complex maths to solve (even though you may get it wrong and it may take you ages to figure it out), giving it a new challenge – try a new sport, hobby, read about a new topic. Then your child needs to have the motivation to learn, practice and be persistent – thus making the muscle-brain grow. We tend to stick at what we are good at and keep obtaining and checking that we score highly. Don’t. Give yourself new challenges. Your brain will grow as a result. So the idea that natural born talent alone will make you successful without putting in effort is wrong. It is in fact through dedication and hard work that a love of learning is created and it is THIS that is essential for great achievement. Natural brains and talent is only the start. Mindset is revolutionising business, sport, education and parenting. So stretch yourself, stick to it when it gets difficult, go outside your comfort zone, don’t hide what you can’t do, see this instead as a new challenge to be tackled regardless of talent. This is a ‘growth mindset’ and this will see you thrive!

Graeme Simsion’s best-selling debut novel The Rosie Project was selected for this year’s One Title One Townsville; a program which presents an opportunity for all members of the Townsville community to read the same book and discuss it in a variety of settings. However, the book is just the beginning; a series of events are also planned around the selected book each year. The Rosie Project began life as a screenplay, winning the Australian Writers Guild/Inscription Award for Best Romantic Comedy before being adapted into a novel. It went on to win the 2012 Victorian Premier’s Literary Award for an unpublished manuscript and has since been sold around the world to forty countries in deals approaching two million dollars. Sony Pictures have optioned the film rights with Graeme contracted to write the script. The lead character in the novel, Don Tillman, is a socially awkward professor of genetics with a serious flair for evidence-based research. In the hope of overcoming his unfortunate record of never securing a second date, he has designed The Wife Project using a sixteen-page questionnaire to help him find the perfect partner. She will most definitely not be a barmaid, a smoker, a drinker, or a late-arriver. Rosie Jarman is all these things. She is also fiery and intelligent and beautiful. And on a quest of her own to find her biological father–a search that Don, a professor of genetics, might just be able to help her with. The Wife Project teaches Don some unexpected things. TIME TO DIG DEEP PROVIDING LITTLE INDIANA HUGHES with medication and physio is a regular commitment that her family have made to their daily routine since she was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis at three months of age. Life now for Indiana consists of regular hospitalisation that can last up to three weeks with three visits in a single year. At only two years of age, Indiana has already had three trips to The Townsville Hospital to help her cope with this lifelong illness that has affected her lungs and digestive system. “She’s pretty good. She’s not scared. She sort of has no fear of pain. Nothing seems to phase her, which is a good attitude to have. But when she comes to the hospital she says, ‘No Mummy I don’t want to be here,’” her mother Rachel told DUO Magazine. Indiana’s condition restricts her from playing with other children in the ward because of her low immune system. “We always have to check who’s out in the playground beforehand because there could be someone out there who may have some sort of infection,” Rachel says. Indiana told DUO that her favourite place in the Children’s Hospital is the playground and she loves to play with the toys. “Indie is very lucky that she can be active. There are days where she seems to be really exhausted, but she doesn’t

stop. She has energy to burn all the time but that could change. In two or four years she could be a lot worse. We don’t know,” Rachel says.
At this stage, The Townsville Hospital Foundation has been able to provide only one small main play area and an outside playground in the Children’s Ward. Rachel hopes donations from the community will help provide a larger area with more toys for the children, comfortable stays and space to freely spend time with her energetic daughter. “When she was in here for 15 days I stayed with her every night. You get a chair beside the bed and it just folds out for you to sleep on. You make do with that, but it does get hard. Still, I’d rather be here with her than have her here on her own,” she says. The foundation relies on contributions and donations from community members, businesses and volunteers to financially assist families and children with care needs. “With all the businesses I know it’s hard with tough times, but there are a lot of kids who need help with being in hospital and that extra bit of care,” Rachel says. “It would be nice to see a lot more businesses giving a bit more to help the kids out.” Rachel is grateful and humbled by the amount of help and support she’s received from the Children’s Ward staff and says “the nurses are really
good with the kids and it’s a nice atmosphere,” but she would love to see a lot more equipment and games for the patients. The long stays can be very challenging for Indiana and her family. “The hardest thing is probably the restrictions, the confined space and being away from the family,” Rachel says. “I’m hoping that Indie is happy enough to find something to occupy herself with on her long stays because that’s the worst of it. When you’re in here for two weeks it’s a long, long time to try and occupy a little child.” With the proposed redevelopment of the Children’s Ward, Rachel hopes to see more televisions, games, Wiis and PlayStations to mentally stimulate the children and make the ward feel like a home away from home. This is where the Hospital Foundation really needs the financial support of the community. With our help, they can maximise the physical space of the ward to make room for more toys and equipment for the patients. Refurbishments of the interior environment will include bright colours and innovative visual design for comfort and warmth. FOR A CAUSE
THE BANISH THE BLACK DOG CHARITY BIKE RIDE IS ON THIS MONTH WITH PARTICIPANTS GEARING UP TO TARGET MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES AND SUPPORT HEALTHIER MINDS, BODIES AND COMMUNITIES. MENTAL ILLNESS, and in particular depression, carries the association of the Black Dog: an ever-present companion, lurking in the shadows just out of sight, growling, vaguely menacing, always on the alert; sinister and unpredictable, capable of overwhelming you at any moment. Research, awareness and education are working to Banish the Black Dog, and this month a special charity event is raising money to support the fight. The Banish the Black Dog Charity Bike Ride is a relaxed cycling tour held on the 24th and 25th of May, promoted by the Rotary Club of Townsville Central to raise awareness of mental health issues in the local community, and raise funds to aid research into the causes and treatments of mental health disorders. The rideâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s major donation recipient is Australian Rotary Health, the largest non-government mental health research funding organisation in Australia. Rotary Health offers educational scholarship opportunities to medical students while supporting overall research projects that work to understand and prevent mental illness. In 2014 Rotary Health has offered 14 grants and scholarships, totalling $1,386,793. This includes 12 Mental Health Research Grants, 17 Ian Scott PhD Scholarships and two Postdoctoral Fellowships. These incredible opportunities have been made possible through fundraising events such as the Banish the Black Dog Charity Bike Ride. Over the last five years the Ride has raised over $250,000, and this year the Rotary Club of Townsville Central are hoping to boost that total even further. Participants will depart Townsville on Saturday 24th May to cycle through the cane fields and crops of the Burdekin region of North Queensland and end up at the Ayr Showgrounds. There, riders will be able to camp out on the broad, shaded lawns, and enjoy live entertainment under the stars. On the Sunday morning the cyclists will return to Townsville via a different route which passes around the base of Mount Elliot. The round trip for the ride is around 260km. I have a particular passion for parenting matters and also property matters involving businesses and companies.” A key point of difference for the firm is that KLP Family Law are open extended hours, from 8am to 6pm weekdays and from 9am till midday on Saturdays. “This has come about as we found too many of our clients struggled to get time off from work in the usual work hours. It was important for them to be able to contact us before and after work and on weekends so we now offer that service.” Being able to converse and empathise with a wide range of people and assist them through transitional periods comes naturally to Jodi. “I love being able to help people,” she says. “I get great satisfaction out of being able to use my knowledge and skills to assist clients in starting a new chapter in their life.”
In one of Jodi’s recent cases she represented the wife in a Family Law matter where the husband dealt questionably with the parties’ matrimonial property. “The client was struggling to cope with the breakdown in her marriage and the financial issues that followed. “I was able to obtain a greater than anticipated result for this client, which brought her genuine relief. Working for this client really made me remember the reason why we do what we do.” Originally from Rockhampton, Jodi moved to Townsville to study at James Cook University. She recently joined the firm but has been practicing as a solicitor since graduating. A working mum, she and her partner Daniel have a seven-month-old daughter named Myah. “I also enjoy playing indoor netball and tennis, and have previously represented both Rockhampton and Townsville ,” she says. “So, even when I’m out of court, I’m in ‘court’!”

IS TEMPING TEMPTING?
Whether you’re a recent graduate, career changer, or in a transitional phase due to a redundancy, at some point in your life, you may have to take a job that’s off your career pathway.
In the current market, hanging out for the next step up in your career or an increase in salary, can mean extended periods of unemployment which is not a good position to be in. If you are struggling to find permanent work or if you are not quite sure what you want to do, temping can be a useful interim solution to this issue. Temping isn’t for everyone; by definition, it isn’t stable and will not always lead to a longer-term contract or permanent role at the end of the assignment, so if you have financial commitments, it may not be the right option for you. But temping can be a great way to gain exposure to industries and positions that you may not have had much experience with previously. It can help you meet new people and gain contacts if you are new in town and it can give you an opportunity to take a break from your career path to ensure that you are heading in the right direction.
Temping isn’t for everyone; by definition, it isn’t stable and will not always lead to a longer-term contract.
Gone are the days where temps are brought into an office just to answer the phone and make coffee. The modern workplace is

evolving and with more and more employers looking to fill skill gaps for specific projects, temporary and contract employment is on the rise. If you do make the decision to look at temporary opportunities it’s essential to make every role you secure count. Don’t get into the mindset that you are ‘just a temp’, even seemingly insignificant jobs can be worth much more than the money they generate along the way. Make sure that any role you take on does at least one of the following: 1. Assists you in developing a skill you didn’t have. Think about what skills you might need to have for your dream job down the line, and look for jobs that let you build that experience. 2. Provides direction for your career. It’s pretty easy to build up a career in your mind – or be attracted to certain alluring industries like travel or entertainment–only to find that once you’re working in that field, the day-today reality isn’t as glamorous or exciting as it once seemed.
3. Allows you to demonstrate your capabilities. Most jobs these days require you to be hands on with the ability to multi task. Ensure that you go over and beyond what is required and remember that this is an excellent opportunity to showcase your skills and experience. 4. Polishes your people skills. No matter where you end up working, you’ll have to deal with people–co-workers, bosses, clients, and vendors. People are people, so the more interactions you have, the more you will learn about adapting to different personality types, management styles, cultural differences, and inter-office politics. So, be observant and learn to adjust to every situation. This in itself is an invaluable skill to have. Temping is like the smorgasbord of the job world. It can give you an opportunity to sample a wide variety of opportunities that you may never have thought to try before.

CREATING TRENDS IS HARD WORK, BUT STAYING TRUE TO WHAT YOU LOVE COMES NATURALLY FOR DARE JENNINGS WORDS COURTNEY FRANK
FROM THE very start Dare Jennings has made his impact on the creative world. Jennings has never been considered conventional and is often referred to as an ‘accidental success story’ or a ‘mildmannered millionaire’. He is calm, relaxed and casual, yet his big smiling face and happy demeanour belie what is often described as a marathon-racing mind. It is this creative energy that led Jennings to drop out of university and hurl his wild ideas and imagination into what can only be described as a fashion cultural revolution.
soon. Jennings admits that he has always liked to do the opposite in things that were declared as given by those who claimed to know ‘the way’. In his 20’s this meant that he got off on surfing, riding motorcycles and bicycles and living his life full of adventure. “In the 70’s if you surfed, you also had a motorbike – you did that because both of those things were a thrill and you pursued them as thrills”. It is this unbridled love of freedom, creativity and adventure that led to the selling of Mambo in 2000 and the bones of a different counter-culture brand began to grow.
Even if you have never heard of Dare Jennings and everything he has created, it’s almost unthinkable that any Australian would fail to recognise Mambo, the cultural legacy he embedded into the Australian fashion landscape in 1984. You may remember a time before surf wear was big business, and if you do, then you’ll remember that Mambo was the brand that started it all. Iconic, brash and colourful was the basis of their idea and what resulted was the creation of a new market for scruffy shirts emblazoned with irreverent slogans and vibrant illustrations. Mambo was a major player in the big leagues, it proved that surf wear could be more than just board shorts and singlets and in doing so created an entirely different industry of fashion clothing. Jennings hated the way that surf was sold as a fundamentalist religion and the ideology that if you weren’t in, you were out. He always maintained that he never wanted to be like the other frontrunners in the business and pushed against mainstream fashion notions to ultimately become the surf wear alternative. It was this way of thinking that often led Jennings to refer to himself and his team as ‘the bastard sons of the surf industry’.
Jennings had in his head that he could start another company that combined all of the things he had loved and talked about, and where they could all happily coexist. Still backing himself, Jennings took his love of vintage motorbikes reflected in contemporary ways and started to build bikes from scratch in a similar vain… And so in 2006, Deus Ex Machina was born. True to form, he ignored advertisers who said his Latin name would be detrimental to the business and lead to its possible downfall since no one could pronounce it, and instead stuck to his guns. The literal meaning ‘God is in the machine’ stood for the respect that Jennings had for the machine and almost every other aspect in his life. Then came the realisation that the notion of ‘wind in your hair and thunder in your guts’, as Deus markets itself, could possibly provide the platform for a combination of more profitable businesses.
Jennings was and still is a maverick by nature. He doesn’t know, or particularly care, if his ideas or business methodologies are considered right or wrong by conventional standards. The fact of the matter is, he knows what he wants to do and has the strength of character to back himself. Even now at 63, he’s not showing signs of slowing down any time

Deus ex Machina started as an almost whimsically retro motorbike shop in Sydney’s inner west and has now spread throughout four continents with stores in Australia, the U.S., Indonesia and Italy. THESE PICTURES ARE WORTH MORE THAN A THOUSAND WORDS IT IS SAID THAT a picture is worth a thousand words. I don’t disagree. But what happens when you fill a gallery with 75 outstanding art works that celebrate the diversity and presence that photographic portraiture can convey. Words become seemingly insignificant. From the 9th May Townsville will celebrate portraiture in all its splendid glory through the biennial event that has become a feature in the local and national consciousness – The Percivals. Over the course of two months the city will be transformed with images of people and, human consciousness and the human condition. Never before has the region embraced this enduring and arresting medium of art in such a saturated and exciting format. Arguably the most exciting development to arise out of The Percivals in 2014 is the staging of the inaugural DUO Magazine Percival Photographic Portrait Prize. Yes I admit it… I am a little biased towards photography but I would fervently argue with anyone that the sheer seductiveness of the photographic image is unrivaled when it is done well. In the case of the inaugural DUO Magazine Percival Photographic Portrait Prize it has been done well indeed. A total of 166 entries have been received from artists throughout the world and thus elevating in its first year the DUO Magazine Percival Photographic Portrait Prize as one of Queensland’s most celebrated art prizes.

For your previewing pleasure the following 11 of the 75 entries that are this years finalists and have been painstakingly and carefully preselected from a very competitive field of high quality works. These works are the best of the best – the cream of the crop – and showcase the breadth of talent within the realm of photographic portraiture. Each entry is a powerful work that resonates with each and every one of us and collectively they are humorous, seductive, controversial, arresting, introspective, moving, experimental and bold expressions of the human condition. However there is nothing that can compare to viewing these works in full scale and presented as the artist intended – larger than life. Choosing a winner from the finalists is no enviable task and I am pleased to say that Townsville will welcome Suzanne Buljan, Director Australian Centre for Photography, to the region to undertake that very task. Suzanne’s role will be a difficult one, as the 75 art works are equally deserving of the prize. I congratulate each of the finalists in the exhibition and wish you the best of luck. THERE AREN’T TOO MANY GESTURES that have the same meaning all around the world. There is the friendly smile, which always says hello. Then there is the raising of a champagne flute, which signifies a cause for celebration. Or as Australia’s only champagne consultant Bernadette O’Shea says: “It symbolises a round of applause.” And this universal meaning is the very reason she believes champagne is the greatest wine in the world. According to Bernadette, champagne is present at every WORDS BY NICOLE THOMSON-PRIDE significant occasion in history and in life. This is something she documents in her award-winning book, Champagne and Chandeliers. She explains how champagne symbolises peace with its presence at the signing of treaties. She says it represents hope when we raise a glass at the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Eve. And, of course, it signifies joy and happiness at weddings and birthdays. “It represents everything beautiful,” says Bernadette. “It’s always there for our happy moments.” But just to clarify, when Bernadette speaks of champagne, there is only one place where the wine could have originated from – Champagne in France. Everything else with bubbles is sparkling wine. And for good reason. The grapes in Champagne are grown in chalky soil, which makes them ideal for wine making. Then the grapes take part in a traditional, lengthy, hand crafted process to create the gold, bubbly liquid so many adore. As Bernadette speaks of the champagne making process it is clear why she has been labelled ‘The Queen of Champagne’. Her knowledge is extensive and her passion is infectious. She has also been bestowed with great honours for her contribution to the industry. This includes becoming the first non-professional woman to win the coveted Vin de Champagne Award in 1984 – an award she now co-judges – and a French Knighthood, Chevalier de l’ordre du Merite Agricole.

When describing the day in 1992 when a French ship came to her hometown of Brisbane to knight her on ‘French soil’, Bernadette says: “It was one of the great highlights of my life.” This came just a few years after she started imparting her wisdom about wine and champagne on to others. These days she still teaches, but only exclusively about champagne. “I teach [people] about the styles of champagne and the different houses,” says Bernadette. “I [also] teach them how to use their mouth to work out what year a vintage champagne was made. [And] I teach them appreciation – how to pick all the nuances that are there.” And in a rare event, champagne lovers in North Queensland have the chance to learn from Bernadette, one of the world’s most recognised champagne experts, at the upcoming Grand Dining Celebrations at Jam Corner. Bernadette is the guest presenter at the dinner, which includes a five-course degustation, paired with six champagnes, and is presented by the likes of DUO Magazine, Louis Roederer and Bollinger. “What a wonderful event,” says Bernadette. “We get to celebrate champagne with every meal.” And in Bernadette’s eyes, that’s something worth raising a glass for.

Bernadette O’Shea, Australia’s only champagne consultant and author of Champagne and Chandeliers, will be a special guest on the evening, helping to present the finest champagne choices to accompany Jam Corner’s cuisine. Guests will be treated to a five-course degustation dinner, with each course paired with a carefully selected champagne by Bernadette herself.

Unlike other special events held in the upstairs function room at Jam Corner, the Grand Dining Celebrations event will be held in the main area of the restaurant, adding to the grandeur of the evening. “We’re closing the restaurant to the public and transforming the main dining area into a stunning formal setting, while the ‘Luxe’ room will become the DUO Champagne Lounge,” tells Matt. Matt hopes guests will make the most of the occasion by donning their most glamorous attire. “We set this date specifically as it’s coming into the colder months; we want to encourage guests to dress up in their finest clothes and feel comfortable.” With only 70 seats available, bookings are essential for this A-list worthy event. NAMED AFTER THE AREA in Victoria where his family was from, the farm has been in the Westcott family for 102 years. Of all the things what he will miss the most will be watching the sun set after a long day’s work, breathing in the fresh, country air first thing in the morning and, of course, his dogs and horses on the farm. Kym Westcott, or Kymbo as he is known to friends, has packed up life on Catumnal Station, his family’s 56,000 hectare cattle farm, and moved to Townsville to open a Paleo Café. Catumnal Station is located south of Hughenden in northwest Queensland. Named after the area in Victoria where his family was from, the farm has been in the Westcott family for 102 years. And Kymbo has been managing the farm for the last 10 years, which has roughly 2,500 cattle and 1,000 sheep. Now he will hand the reigns back over to his mum and dad. Life in Townsville will be very different to life on the farm. Instead of spending three hours on a motorbike mustering cattle to and from a watering point, with the help of eight working dogs and a house dog who likes to get amongst it, he will be running a busy café on downtown Flinders Street. But it’s not the first time this country boy has traded his cowboy hat and boots for the city life. A self-confessed “people person”, Kymbo has previously lived in Sydney and London and is looking forward to once again being surrounded by others. And that’s a good thing, as there are plenty of people in Townsville eagerly awaiting the opening of his Paleo Café, which is part of the Australia wide Paleo Café franchise. In fact, it hasn’t even opened for business yet but its Facebook page has roughly 3,500 likes. “I’ve been totally blown away by the level of interest from the local community,” says Kymbo. “I think people who are health conscious or suffer from gluten or dairy allergies are really excited by the idea of going to café and being able to order everything on the menu.”
Opening a paleo café was a logical choice for Kymbo. Like so many others, he started following a paleo lifestyle two years ago after suffering from some health issues and visiting a naturopath. And being a farmer, he has a deep appreciation for all things natural. “One of the things I love about paleo food is that it is so natural – everything is made from scratch and everything is 100 percent preservative free,” says Kymbo. “I think people in Townsville will appreciate that everything served at our café will be made from scratch and on the premises.” But his natural, wholesome food isn’t the only country goodness he will be bringing to Townsville. “Once I’m settled, I’ll bring a few of the horses to live with me here.” As the saying goes: you can take the man out of the country but you can’t take the country out of the man. STEAK WITH TARRAGON AND MUSHROOM SAUCE A quick-and-easy sauce that turns a simple steak into something very special. MAKES 4 PORTIONS PREP: 10 MINS COOK: 12 MINS
4 thick sirloin or fillet steaks 3 tbsp olive oil 1 small onion, chopped 1 garlic clove, crushed 150 ml wine 100 ml double cream 150g brown mushrooms, sliced a few drops Worcestershire sauce 1 tbsp chopped fresh tarragon salt and black pepper
1. Take the steaks out of the fridge for 10 minutes before cooking. Season and rub with 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Heat a frying pan until hot. Fry the steaks for 4 minutes on each side until medium pink. Set aside on a plate to rest. 2. Heat the remaining olive oil in the pan. Add the onion and garlic and fry until soft. Add the wine and reduce by half. Add the cream and mushrooms. Stir for 3 minutes then add the Worcestershire sauce and tarragon and season. Serve the sauce with the rested steaks.

ONION AND GRUYERE TART MAKES 8 PORTIONS This is my favourite savoury tart; a delicious mix of slowly caramelised onions and Gruyère cheese. It’s easy to make the Parmesan pastry with a food processor. PREP: 30 MINS, PLUS CHILLING TIME COOK: 50 MINS 225g plain flour, plus extra for dusting 125g butter, cubed 30g Parmesan cheese 1 medium egg, beaten For the filling a knob of butter 1 tbsp olive oil 500g onions, thinly sliced 4 large eggs 300ml double cream 150ml milk 200g Gruyère cheese, grated 30g Parmesan cheese, grated salt and black pepper 1. Line a 24–25cm deep round loose bottom tart tin. 2. To make the pastry, put the flour, butter and Parmesan in a food processor. Whizz until it looks like breadcrumbs. Add the egg and 1 tablespoon of water and whizz until the mixture forms a ball. Roll out on a clean, lightly floured work surface and line the base and sides of the flan tin with the pastry. Set aside to chill in the fridge for 30–35 minutes. 3. Preheat the oven to 220°C/425°F/ Gas 7. Prick the base of the flan pastry and line with baking paper and then baking beans. Blind bake the pastry for 10 minutes. Remove the beans and bake for a further 8–10 minutes until lightly golden, then place the pastry case on a baking sheet. 4. To make the filling, melt the butter and olive oil in a frying pan. Add the onions and fry over a medium–high heat for 5 minutes. Cover with a lid and gently simmer for 20 minutes until soft and golden brown. Spread onto the base of the tart. 5. Beat the eggs in a bowl. Add the cream and milk and season. Add the Gruyère, then pour into the case. Sprinkle with the Parmesan. 6. Reduce the oven to 180°C/350°F/ Gas 4. Bake for about 30–35 minutes until lightly golden on top and set in the middle.

MAKES 6 PORTIONS This chilled, no-bake cheesecake has a beautifully soft texture. You can use toffee sauce or dulche de leche to create the marbled effect. PREP: 30 MINS, PLUS CHILLING TIME
CHOCOLATE AND TOFFEE MARBLE CHEESECAKE
100g digestive biscuits 50g unsalted butter, melted 150g full-fat cream cheese 200ml whipped cream 150g milk chocolate 2 tbsp toffee sauce (or dulce de leche) 1. Line an 18cm round loose-bottom cake tin with non-stick baking paper. 2. Crush the biscuits in a polythene bag with a rolling pin, then pour into a bowl and mix with the melted butter. Press the biscuits onto the base of the prepared tin and smooth with a spoon or potato masher. Leave to chill in the fridge. 3. Measure the cream cheese and cream into a bowl and whisk until thick. 4. Melt the chocolate in a heatproof bowl over a pan of simmering water until runny. Don’t allow the base of the bowl to come into contact with the water. Leave to cool. 5. Divide the cream mixture in half. Add the chocolate to one half and the toffee sauce to the other, and mix well. Spoon the mixtures into the tin and gently swirl to make a marbled effect. Chill for 3 hours before serving.

SARAH LIVES ONBOARD a Morgan Out Island cruising yacht with her husband, Carlos, and their two children, Syd (8) and Indi (5); she operates her cartoon business; home schools her ‘squids’; all while making plans to travel the world. What inspires your life at the moment? I love living on the boat. I love working and connecting with people all around the world. And I have to say my kids, I’ve just been really enjoying spending every day with them and home schooling them. How did you come to be in Townsville? We’re from Brisbane originally, and we had a building business for 10 years and we had to close that. So we had to sell everything, every-THING, well pretty much everything. We thought that we had to earn all this money to go and do our world trip on the boat, that’s what we had as a dream when we first met. And when we lost everything we just thought, ‘Well, now we can do anything we want!’ So it was a whole mindset shift. At first my husband said, “How about we move onto Summer Dream?” which was our first boat, and I was like, “Hell no! That’s… I just can’t!” and he said, “Give it two weeks and then we’ll see.” So I gave it two weeks and it was awesome, all the stuff that I don’t want to do, I find ways to make my life easier.
How did you get into cartooning? I was an interior designer for 10 years before I did the cartooning. I’d always drawn, I’d always be doing cartoons for family, and just leaving them over everyone’s houses all the time. And then someone said to me, “What are you doing? You obviously love doing this, why don’t you try and make a living out of it?” And I just decided to take the leap and everything is just going so fast now, I‘ve got contracts with large companies in America, and it’s just fantastic. How do you keep everything balanced? There’s always sacrifices with everything. I do a lot of work between 8pm and 2am. It’s my real creative time, but I know when I have to be like ‘Okay, I need to go to bed early’. I just think life is a lot more malleable than I thought it was especially with technology now. Can you tell us some more about some of your characters? I have kind of developed these little characters. One of the characters is me and I take photos, and then I’ll draw them onto the photo. Because we’re doing our world trip I was trying to think about how we’ll document it. We’re looking at doing lots of charity work as we go around the world... and that’s where I’m trying to develop my character which is something a little different... because that’s what I do and I’ll blend the two together. I don’t just want to travel and be like, ‘Oh yeah, this is fun, look at us on the beach’. It’s definitely going to have a purpose because we’ve got the skills to do it, and I’ve got contacts that can make it happen.
What is it like home schooling your kids? Every parent is doing something different with their kids. We do the basics and as long as they do a lot of that, then their curiosity will steer them into the direction. Also manners and empathy, that’s a BIG thing I teach the kids... and just to really see what’s going on and HOW to communicate with people in a really intuitive way. Why pink hair? It was kind of an accident because, I had red hair before, and I ran out of red colouring, so I found this pink tube, and I ended up really liking it, and my cartoon character looks really great with the same pink hair, so I think I’ll keep it going. Best advice you were ever given? ‘Don’t follow well lit paths’. My biggest thing now is that just because you haven’t seen it done before, it doesn’t mean it can’t happen. Being different is a really good thing, because you’re standing out. If you’re a little different then no one is going to forget you. Like at the moment, I’m a cartoonist, that is location independent, living on a boat, working on a boat. I choose my own hours, I home school my kids. It was like, ‘well, I made that happen somehow’. And it does take a lot of energy. But when you’re really passionate about something you find the energy to do it.

You drive a: Nissan Dualis Where are you from? I grew up in Vanuatu where three generations of my family were born. Due to political unrest we were forced to leave Vanuatu and settled in Sydney before moving to Townsville where we’ve called home since 1981. Best dish: Tahitian Fish Salad–a secret recipe from the Islands. I’m also very partial to fresh oysters. Your biggest inspiration: Mum and my dad. They’ve done it tough after losing everything when leaving Vanuatu and having to start all over again. Love you both! You’d change this about yourself: With maturity comes loss of eyesight–I can’t stress how frustrating this is. I so want this back. Ideal dinner guests: Someone with a great sense of humour–Andrew O’Keefe (Weekend Sunrise); someone easy on the eye, perhaps Daniel Craig (007); and someone to bring the wine. Your must-have gadget: I would say my iPhone although nowadays I would have to say my reading glasses as I cannot see the phone screen without them. The last book you read The Complete Works of William Shakespeare… no only joking, it was in fact last months’ DUO Magazine. Your philosophy: Treat others how you would like to be treated yourself. As a child, what did you think you’d be doing at this age? I speak two languages and always thought I’d travel the world as an air hostess–but alas I’m not a fan of flying! Parting words: Life is short so enjoy everything... in moderation.
AKA: Mum Most treasured item: A huge 1950s black lady bust I carted all the way from Sweden in my hand luggage. Oh,and my kids are pretty treasured! You in three words: Young at heart Most memorable moment: Watching my daughter Rita win the 800m at the National Athletics Championships in Sydney when she was 12. She had spent most of the night before psyching herself up by scribbling “I will win, I will win, I will win” on a notepad–and she did! I was so proud of her! What you love about where you live: The sunshine! After spending half of my life in two countries with probably the worst weather ever, I really appreciate seeing the sun almost every day. You always meant to: Do what I’m doing now–run my own retro shop. I’ve been a collector since about 15 and always loved ‘old’ stuff. I opened my own vintage clothing shop in Sweden in 1983 but I was a little bit ahead of times and it wasn’t a very successful venture. Where are you from: I grew up in a small town in Sweden called Vaxjoe. Moved to London in my early twenties, spent 8 years there before going travelling across the globe and finally ending up in Australia almost 20 years ago. Your biggest inspiration: My aunt Monica. She’s 80 but still rides her horse every day! Your must-have gadget: My sewing machines. Your philosophy: Never buy anything new if you can recycle something old. I love the satisfaction of blowing new life into things that have been discarded. The only things I buy new are electrical items and underwear. As a child, what did you think you’d be doing at this age? Living the life of a castaway in a straw hut under the palm trees on a deserted beach! Parting words: Never judge a book by its cover. A lot of opportunities can be missed by being too quick to judge (and I’m not just talking about books).
AKA: The girl that makes my coffee. Most treasured item: My grandmothers wedding ring. She gave it to me just before she passed away.You in three words: I’m very lucky. Why you get out of bed: To see what adventure the day will bring and to drink coffee! And to provide lots of caffeine to others like me. Most memorable moment: There are so many but I think the most memorable are when you meet people in your life that you know straight away that they will be in your life for a long time and that things will never be the same again. You always meant to: Open my own espresso bar and travel more but there is still time…. Where are you from: Sunshine Coast, I grew up in Noosa where part of our high school sports education in summer was to go to the beach. Best dish: I’m not big on cooking, but I’ve been told that I make pretty awesome Bloody Mary. You wish… that a full time work week was 3 days on 4 days off! For everyone. Your biggest inspiration: My dad, he always seems to keep a positive outlook on life no matter what happens. You’d change this about yourself: My stress levels at work, outside work I’m pretty chilled out! Oh and I would like to be two inches taller! Ideal dinner guests: Billy Connolly, David Suzuki, Alec Baldwin, Amy Poehler and Tina Fey. The last book you read: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Stieg Larsson and just starting the second book in the trilogy. Your philosophy: Often in life we forget the things we should remember and remember the things we should forget. As a child, what did you think you’d be doing at this age: I had a very crazy imagination and I thought I’d be living in a tree house in the forest with the animals! But I’ve grown up now (which is still debatable)and that it’s a crazy idea which could have someone committed! Held in April the Crocs MVP dinner was an opportunity to not only acknowledge the players but to celebrate saving the team this season and rewarding some of the vital volunteers for their dedication. Coach Shawn Dennis gave an inspiring speech about the future and highlighted that sometimes you win but lose and sometimes you lose but win and that this is a winning club excited about the future. Highlights of the night included a dance review performed by all players and coaches, featuring ballet, contemporary, jazz, and highland styles!
