WELCOME
WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU GOT AWAY TO MAGGIE? Once-upon-a-time Maggie Island businesses were famous for their poor customer service. True. ‘Island Time’ had a lot to do with it. Our classic story happened long ago when the ferry used to stop at Arcadia. The new bride (that would be Stacey) and I stayed for a weekend at the Arcadia Hotel. For just the one night we took two suitcases so we had hopes of catching the ‘courtesy’ bus to the hotel. No bus arrived after half an hour so we started walking. Half way down the track the bus passed us going to ‘meet’ the ferry. No worries. We made it to the hotel, checked in and had a fantastic time. Checking out on Sunday we took our bags to Reception. As I stood at the counter, through the back door I could see a bloke with a hose washing the courtesy bus. I asked the front office lady if the bus was going to the ferry. She turned to the door and yelled, “Bill? You going to the ferry?” To which Bill replied; “How many are there?” She looked at us;“Two?” To which Bill replied; “Nuh.” So we hoofed it back to the ferry. That was once-upon-a-time. A few weeks ago now, Stacey and I went to the Island for a long weekend with our friends Leanne and Diane. The service was outstanding! It started with the happy girl on the car ferry who sold us some coffees and wished us a pleasant stay, it continued with the R&R ladies at the Picnic Bay Hotel, then the taxi driver who was so proud of the place, and continued on a daily basis with the staff at Caffe Dell’ Isola (great Italian pizza at Arcadia) and Peppers Blue on Blue. I was told that when Peppers opened, it was their service standards that prompted other businesses to become more professional. The excellent customer service is one reason why Maggie deserves the praise it’s getting from visitors and holidaymakers. We’ll definitely be going back to Magnetic Island again (and again). Things (and people) I appreciate this month: Gloss Car Detailing (love your work Jason), Tyrion Lannister, Jon Snow, Samwell Tarly, my wife Stacey (only three mentions this month), Townsville Hospital Foundation, rainy weekends, our (adorable) new great niece Camryn Toomey, Sawai Thai Massage, Roger’s birthday, and every day above ground. Hope you enjoy this month’s HOME issue... SCOTT MORRISON | PUBLISHER

HOROSCOPE
August
Leo’s appreciate life’s more dramatic moments. So you’ll love these next few spirited months. On the agenda? A hotbed of romance – for singles and already loved-up couples. Professionally, too, you’re a powerhouse. By becoming more assertive, you get to call the shots and name your direction.

Life gets a nudge in the right direction this month, but it’s up to you to take that first step forward. Reviewing work priorities should create more time for play. And that’s what you truly need. To get the best from August, take the occasional break – even if only for a few days. So divert all calls to message bank. Go play!
August supercharges Libran energies – with an accompanying temptation to break free of stifling restrictions. Once non-essentials are stripped away, you’re better able to judge your personal strengths and vulnerabilities; and then, make any necessary changes. This month, you’re on the winning side of this game called ‘life’.
You’re not out of the woods yet, Scorpio. Sure, you could be questioning if it’s all worth it – or whether you should abandon what seems to be a fruitless quest. All you need is a new perspective, and plenty of fresh air. You should be out in the elements – even if it means a few days away in warmer climes.
Fate, destiny or synchronicity, call it what you like – something’s about to happen. If you have important choices to make, trust your intuition. At work, expect to rub shoulders with more professionally oriented people. Friends at the top have no qualms abut helping you, so make the most of your contacts.

Being deliberately outspoken isn’t your usual style, but expressing your concerns just might help you get what you want. Silence isn’t always golden. Should you become worried that opportunities are passing you by later in August – don’t. Seeds have been planted. Hard work and determination will do the rest.
Constant disappointment is a heavy cross to bear. But you’ve shouldered your burdens well – and the cosmos now offers well deserved rewards. For some, life does a complete turn-around. Others simply satisfy desires. So do whatever it is that makes you feel truly alive. The outcome will be sensational.
Sometimes you feel like you just don’t belong on this planet. Others don’t seem to understand your unique imagination. Happily, August gives the rest of us dullards a chance to catch up and beam in to your other-worldly wavelength. Communications start to improve. As do relationships.
Sweep the less savoury issues of life to the side this month. While in such a vibrant mood, do yourself a huge favour and take time out to play. Sure, you’ll blow the budget, but the memories will more than make up for it. And it’s not just you doing the giving. Generosity becomes a two-way street.

22 JUNE – 22 JULY
If you’ve been hoping for a change in fortune, this could be your lucky month – both in terms of material gain and personal contentment. Positive change should also bring a deeper understanding of what you truly want from life. Be prepared to share. The more you give, the more you get.
It’s true what they say, that hardships can often be blessings in disguise. Challenges serve to strengthen mind, body and soul. So sterner lessons from the past can work in your favour this month. Best news: romantically, you’re more confident and here, too – you shouldn’t be disappointed.
No denying that you can be a total saint, but August encourages more ‘me’ time. After all, how much of others’ complaints can you take? It would be nice if everyone recognised that you have just as many commitments as they do. Maybe they wouldn’t be so selfish with your time.

‘Amalgamated’ is a collection by Tuomas Markumpolka which explores the relationship of a mass produced ‘tool’ and its individual purpose. The beauty of the pencil as an object seems to go unnoticed if utilised only for their primary purpose. ‘Amalgamated’ is a visual and tactile investigation by using pencils as a raw material. This holistic principle has been the fundament for creating this set of vases; let the pencils become a thing themselves. The vases are a limited edition and come in three different shapes: 30 cm and 45 cm tall with different colour options. Available exclusively through Gallery FUMI www.galleryfumi.com

Jane MacCallum MacCallum & Partners Architects ABOUT ME I’m an interior designer who works alongside my husband Roger MacCallum of MacCallum & Partners Architects. My career started when I worked for a firm of architects in Sydney as a PA to the senior partners; from there I went into administration, helping with project management and running the office library, which included sourcing materials and products for projects and finally specialising in commercial interiors while studying for a Diploma in Interior Design at College. My family of six moved to Townsville in 1993. Roger was engaged with the Cable Car Project on Castle Hill, which had obtained approval but never proceeded. We decided to stay anyway and work started flowing in. I returned to the practice part-time as I had two children at school, one in kindergarten and one in day-care. This part-time arrangement worked well for me as I was always able to collect my children from school and cover after-school activities. On occasions I needed to return to the office after hours to meet with clients. I had to be extremely wellorganised to balance work and family demands. ABOUT WORK In moving from a southern climate to a tropical climate I quickly learned that the climate dictated what needed to be addressed for Townsville. I started to lay furniture out with more consideration towards free movement of space, cross-ventilation and material choices, for example, to make seating more comfortable in a hot humid environment. I was influenced by the fundamental qualities of the Queenslander, which deals so well with climate. Our first home in Townsville was a Queenslander, which Roger raised and restored to incorporate modern lifestyle elements with 22 DUO MAGAZINE AUGUST 2014 duomagazine.com.au
the tropical environment. Our designs direction includes cooler colour choices, timber floors, fans, air-conditioning, and louvers as well as large covered outside decks furnished for dining and lounging. ABOUT OUR HOME Our current home, which was another major renovation, includes a mixture of natural finishes such as timber and stone. We’ve also used subtle and cool paint finishes inside and out before adding personal touches. I believe you should always layout your furniture and then add objects that you like and that make you happy. Our possessions include antique pieces inherited from Roger’s and my family, modern furnishings, and pieces collected from our travels. I create spaces where I can sit and enjoy just being there, and there are many. One old piece of furniture placed with new furniture brings interest into a room. I’ve been influenced by my mother, Adelaide, who filled her home with flamboyancy and style. My husband Roger, an architect who has been my mentor, also taught me to appreciate less is more and the lasting values of minimalism. Other interior designers, such as David Hicks who brings a touch of Malaysian to his design, also influence me. All this has taught me that you can combine clean design with any theme. My design philosophy revolves around creating warmth and soul in a home. The process of selecting materials, fixtures and finishes are indicative of the client’s needs and wants. Most importantly, surround yourself with objects that you feel comfortable with and make coming home after a hard day’s work relaxing. I believe these final touches are what create the soul and warmth in a space.

Sally Logan Sally Logan Interiors ABOUT ME I started in retail sales, management and training. I worked for a Perth company for many years, and the customer service training they provided has been beneficial through all aspects of my life and work. The customer always comes first, and empathy is a great skill. I also worked as a nanny, in England and Perth, living in some amazing homes, from a five-storey terrace home in Kensington, to stunning architecturally designed homes in the beach suburbs of Perth. I think this is were I learnt to appreciate beautiful homes and art, although it was well out of my budget and probably still is. I started my business here in Townsville in 2005. There was a demand for furnishing units for corporate rental at the time, so I took the plunge and am still going today. The business now has a hire furniture and styling service for properties for sale as well as a design and interiors side.

ABOUT WORK Balancing work and family has changed during the course of the business. In the beginning you work every hour of the day and weekend to get established. I’m lucky that I’ve always had the support and help of a great husband. Thanks Brendan! As time goes on you try to work smarter not harder. I used to pick the girls up from school, get them organised and fed, then head out to complete work during the evening. Now I can usually fit work into a normal five-day working week, with only a few exceptions. The weekends are for family and friends. Townsville is a great place to work and start a business. Word of mouth is a wonderful thing. Also the climate allows for a relaxed style of living, which I love. We spend time in Bali where they have beautiful tropical living spaces. I try to incorporate that in my work as it’s great for the Townsville climate and lifestyle. Cool outdoor spaces that can be used throughout the year. ABOUT OUR HOME We are lucky that our home has a large breezeway between the main house and the unit/granny flat at the back. We use this area all year round for dining, living, and a lot of entertaining. Social by nature, we enjoy nothing more than entertaining friends and family in our home. The home is also surrounded with Rain trees, with four in the front yard alone, which shade the home from the afternoon sun. Air-conditioning is rarely used. I have a very eclectic style and am definitely a collector. I think that if you love a piece and it has some meaning to you, be it a childhood memory, somewhere you’ve visited, or just the odd thing you see beauty in, it will work in your home. That’s my excuse anyway! Basically I just have stuff everywhere… At times I go through and put things away, but gradually they creep out of cupboards and find a spot again. I just have too many things I love to look at everyday. I must add, though, my advice when selling a home is to declutter as much as possible. I will have to put this into practise when the time comes for us. The man who built our home brought the plans back from America. It reminds us of The Brady Bunch house. It’s a split-level home with a number of different areas, so it all seems to work. 28 DUO MAGAZINE AUGUST 2014 duomagazine.com.au

sustainable working and living environments Troppo is a practice of regionally based studios aiming to develop regionally responsive architectures. For the place of each project, let’s promote a Sense of Place: through an architecture that responds to climate and the local setting: a dynamic architecture of adjustable skins; that connects the indoors with the out (or should it be the outdoors with the in?): a non-constant architecture that responds to the morning, the evening, the season, the heat, the cold, the sun, the rain the moment that will never pass again. Troppo embrace the informality that is the Australian lifestyle, both in our approach to design as well as practice: NO BOW-TIES HERE!.
We believe that architecture should express a certain poetry, its users’ personalities, and the uniqueness of the mix of place, people and the day; but also some basic logic… We believe that a building is foremost a structure. From this standpoint only rational design decisions can flow – with consequent robustness, ‘buildability’ and economy. And we believe that a building should be fun, friendly and forever adaptable. We are committed to the notion of environmentally sustainable, responsible architecture. Which leads to a whole-of-site approach (and beyond).

Anna Williams Ethos Interiors ABOUT ME I’ve always been a creative person, and love all forms of creative expression, including music, art, writing and design. I guess I’ve always had an entrepreneurial spirit too; my first job (at the age of 14) was selling my jewellery designs at a little stall at Cotters Market. Originally, I wanted to pursue architecture, but ended up applying for a business degree at James Cook, majoring in Entrepreneurship and Marketing. Over the course of the degree, I discovered a renewed interest in entrepreneurship and running my own business. I also rediscovered a love of decorating and design. The week I graduated from uni, I registered my business name and offered my services to a local builder. From there, it’s only been upwards, with some great experiences and wonderful clients! I’m a Townsville girl – born and bred – so Townsville has obviously had a huge influence on how I live and design. I spent a lot of time studying international design trends, and then adapting them to the Townsville lifestyle in my work. We obviously have a very different climate to the influential design centres of the world, like Europe and the US, so it’s important to consider how colour and design concepts adapt to our warm and humid climate. Townsville is known for its relaxed lifestyle, and this is also something I try to incorporate into my designs – a sense of elegance or luxury but still with that comfortable and inviting feel that fits our lifestyle.

ABOUT WORK Balancing work and family time has always been something I’ve struggled with but my amazing fiancé has taught me to value my personal time, and not just my business. Working from home can make it difficult to switch off at the end of the day, but there are a few things I’ve learnt over the years. I try to have a separate office or working space. This enables me to walk away from work to allow myself to relax. I always get dressed for work, even if I end up working at the dining table, and I try and maintain fairly standard office hours. Additionally, I’ve also cut back the hours I work on the weekend to enjoy our beautiful lifestyle in Townsville, and spend time with family and friends. ABOUT OUR HOME Our home is a 1950s-era Queenslander, so we have some beautiful traditional features including casement windows and tongue-andgroove walls. Unfortunately, we also scored some rainbow-coloured rooms, and a retro yellow kitchen. Thankfully, the Queenslanders are lovely to live in, with our climate, having plenty of open windows to catch the sea breeze. I chose soft blue-greys for the interior of the home, to create cool inviting spaces in contrast to the heat outside. I use a lot of cool colours such as grey, blue, black and white. I also, however, add splashes of pink and yellow in reference to our tropical climate. I’ve found a mix of contemporary and traditional pieces work beautifully with the Queenslander aesthetic, and create a home that is contemporary but reflects Townsville’s Queenslander history. We love to entertain, so the original eat-in kitchen works brilliantly with our lifestyle. Everyone crowds around the table for a dinner party, and I don’t miss a word while I’m cooking! The separate living room has also been a blessing in a small house as having two separate entertaining areas is great. Incorporating my favourite possessions is essential in creating a place that feels like home. The rustic dining table belonged to my grandparents, and I mixed it with modern white chairs to create a more contemporary, lighter feel. The beautiful wooden armchairs in my living room were a gift for my 18th birthday, so they will always have a special place in my home. We love to travel, so I’m always picking up bits and pieces that have meaning. These special objects are scattered around the home, and every one has a wonderful memory associated with it. Artwork is also a huge part of my aesthetic. Every piece in my home has a story, from the vintage embroidery I bought at a flea market in Budapest, to the amazing abstract by a school friend, Harry Stanley. Although I love changing the look of my home with accessories, a staple on my coffee table is always our holiday photo albums. I don’t subscribe to any particular genre, and love everything from minimalist to traditional. I guess I’d consider my personal style fresh and eclectic. In my own home, I end up with a mix of different styles, but in my clients’ I love the opportunity to work with different looks. I’ve been lucky enough to have worked with some great styles; with a variety of jobs from an industrial office to a stylish bachelor pad. Regardless of the style though, my goal is always to create an inviting and comfortable space, that is practical yet stylish. I love to use amazing artwork, and find it’s the accessories and final touches that create real character in a space. At the end of the day, I always want people to get a glimpse of my clients’ personality or business brand through the interiors I create.

LIEBHERR SBSES 7165 My kitchen is a place for… Entertaining! As a chef we are at work most nights which only gives us a few nights a week at home, and after slaving over the stove all week I find it hard to be able to prepare meals for the family. There Hannah is definitely the cook at home, I really enjoy her home cooked meals. We will often hold dinner parties with friends on our days off, where we prepare three shared courses, sit and relax over a few drinks. Our daughter Grace (4) loves dinner time as she gets to help with basic preparation of meals (I definitely think she has what it takes to be a chef). I think every kitchen should have… a Thermomix. These appliances are amazing both commercially and domestically, creating amazing dishes in the Thermomix is very easy and time saving which is what every family wants at dinner time. In my kitchen I couldn’t live without… Heavy based frypans, the difference you will get after you can sear protein in a heavy based pan and transfer it straight to the oven. And gas appliances is a great way to be able to create the heat source. The most overlooked element of the kitchen... The oven. I find a lot of people build brand new houses and don’t put much thought in to the size of the oven, especially if they want to be able to cater for events in their own home. In my dream kitchen I would have… a bold series commercial line up: Convotherm oven, Pacojet, Thermomix, Blast Chiller, sorbet machine, wood fired oven, pretty much everything I have in my commercial kitchen. :)

BATHROOM FURNITURE Bathroom furniture is becoming an increasingly important consideration for consumers in Australia. Our recent Omnibus survey showed that the vanity is now the most important element of the bathroom ahead of shower enclosures and mirrors, selected by almost 25% of those surveyed. We are seeing the rise of innovative approaches to the design of vanities to create products that are multi-functional, space saving and visually striking. Customisation can be crucial to finding a vanity unit that’s both functional and visually striking in your bathroom space. Reece’s stunning new range of bespoke Issy vanities allows complete freedom in customisation. These vanities are made to order so you can be sure you’re getting a vanity that seamlessly fits the look and size of your space.
As spaces in the home become more integrated, so too does the functional and decorative role of furniture. Traditional complementary furniture such as mirrors, tall boys and floating cabinetry continue to be important in the bathroom space, but we’re seeing more furniture like stools, chairs, shelves and side tables appearing. The stunning bathroom furniture and accessories in the new Kartell by Laufen collection are a great example of this integrated approach, with the Perspex mirrors, racks and stools from the collection as appropriate in the bathroom as they would be elsewhere in the home. Q&A
BRETT BOYD
BNZED Landscaping Director and Head Landscaper
What is the first thing to consider when planning an outdoor space? From a construction perspective, living in Far NQ you really need to think about drainage. How will your project and design effect the flow of water? Can it escape? Not identifying and executing the correct processes could be a very costly mistake. What are three important considerations when designing your backyard? When planning your outdoor space, it is important to consider how you intend to use the space, what practical purposes you need your space to provide, and any functional requirements you would like to achieve. It’s also advisable you think about how the design compliments your home – the last thing you want is a space that looks awkward or unfinished. But also consider your budget. Knowing what you have to spend will naturally assist in the design process. How can you make a small space an outdoor sanctuary? A small space does not automatically mean that you too cannot enjoy the delights of beautiful plants and greenery! With such amazing products readily available like vertical wall planters, and DIY feature potting displays, cable vines and so on, you can incorporate a urban style garden which will not impede on the minimal space you might have but will make that space inviting and visually larger than what it really is! What works well in a front yard? Something that is different and cohesive to the home but is well executed. You may notice many front yards have the same standard garden in the middle and maybe one to the side. Try to think outside the square and compliment your home with a striking garden arrangement, feature or different materials like an element of paving, stone, water, rock or timber etc. And remember, you don’t always have to spend big to achieve big results. What are your favourite plants for our tropical climate? Our favourite plants are; Alpinia purpurata – Hawaiian Red Gingers, Calathea lutea – Cuban Cigars, Cyathea australis – Tree Ferns, Agaves, Hymenocallis speciosa – Broad Leaf Spider Lily, Rhapis excelsa – Lady Palm, Bambusa – Bamboo, Randia fitzalanii – Native Gardenia – gosh! so many beautiful plants and trees. The variety available to us is wonderful, and in every garden all plants can be gorgeous if put together well. Keep in mind, some plants and tress that attract birds or butterflies like the Euodia elleryana which attracts the spectacular Ulysses Butterfly.

All-Purpose Cleaner Mix 1/2 cup vinegar and 1/4 cup baking soda into 2 litres water. This mix is useful for water deposit stains on shower stall panels, bathroom chrome fixtures, windows and bathroom mirrors. Another alternative are microfibre cloths that lift off dirt, grease and dust without the need for cleaning chemicals because they’re formulated to penetrate and trap dirt.
Air Freshener Vinegar with lemon juice in small dishes absorbs odours around the house and having houseplants helps reduce odours in the home too. To prevent cooking odours, try simmering vinegar (1 tbsp in 1 cup water) on the stove while cooking. As for fish and onion smells on utensils and cutting boards, wipe them with vinegar and wash in soapy water. Keeping fresh coffee grounds on the counter can also improve the smell in your kitchen and grinding up a slice of lemon in the garbage disposal is another great tip.
Bathroom Mould Banisher
HOME-CLEANING
NATURALLY
FOR MANY HOME-CLEANING CHORES, YOU CAN MAKE YOUR OWN CLEANING PRODUCTS. TRY THESE DO-IT-YOURSELF FORMULAS FOR A NATURAL SOLUTION.
Mould in bathroom tile grout is a common problem and can be a health concern. Mix one part hydrogen peroxide (3 per cent) with two parts water in a spray bottle and spray on areas with mould. Wait at least one hour before rinsing or using the shower.
Carpet Stains Mix equal parts white vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Spray directly on stain, let sit for several minutes, and clean with a brush or sponge using warm soapy water. For fresh grease spots, sprinkle corn starch onto the spot and wait 15 to 30 minutes before vacuuming.
Dishwashing Soap Commercial low-phosphate detergents are not themselves harmful, but phosphates nourish algae that use up oxygen in waterways. A detergent substitution is to use liquid soap. Add 2 or 3 tablespoons of vinegar to the warm, soapy water for tough jobs.
Drain Cleaner For light drain cleaning, mix 1/2 cup salt in 4 litres water, heat (but not to a boil) and pour down the drain. For stronger cleaning, pour about 1/2 cup baking soda down the drain, then 1/2 cup vinegar. The resulting chemical reaction can break fatty acids down into soap and glycerine, allowing the clog to wash down the drain. Caution: Don’t use this method after trying a commercial drain opener as the vinegar can react with the drain opener. A commercial alternative is to use CitraDrain Build-Up Remover, which uses natural enzymes to safely eliminate grease, oil, soap residue and more to keep pipes flowing properly.
Floor Cleaner Most floor surfaces can be easily cleaned using a solution of vinegar and water. For damp-mopping wood floors, mix equal amounts of white distilled vinegar and water. Add 15 drops of pure peppermint oil and shake to mix.

TOWNSVILLE’S ONLY HOT YOGA STUDIO LOCALS CAN NOW BENEFIT FROM THE MANY HEALTH BENEFITS OF HOT YOGA AND NEAR INFRARED RAYS.
DURING ITS FIRST WEEK of business, Lighten Up, a new yoga studio situated in the heart of Townsville, proved so popular with locals some of its classes booked out in advance. Although this comes as no surprise considering the studio, which opened on 30th June, is the only yoga studio in Townsville to offer hot yoga classes. “Hot yoga is hugely popular in Sydney and Melbourne,” says Bec Dore, Founder of Lighten Up. “And it is great that Townsville finally has its own hot yoga studio for the benefit of locals.” Lighten Up offers a range of hot and warm classes, including yoga, pilates and barre, and since opening for business Bec has been blown away by the popularity of these classes with a lot of people loving their Power Burn class. “Power Burn is an all body workout set at 37 degrees to optimise detoxification and sweating,” says Bec. “This is our hottest and most challenging class, which helps shape lean muscle. It also speeds up your metabolism with infrared rays to help you burn more calories.”
“[Yoga ] re-inspires the good in people and puts a sparkle back in their eye.” Bec Dore
As well using the infrared heat to detoxify the body and metabolise fat, hot yoga classes are also hugely beneficial in helping you burn through stress and frustration. Bec says clients feel lighter, happier and more invigorated after completing a hot class – adding how they become addicted. She also speaks of the health benefits of hot classes. “Our studio uses a special type of heating called near infrared rays,” explains Bec. “This light spectrum has many special benefits for your body. According to scientific research, the benefits of doing exercise in near infrared heating helps to boost your metabolism, reduce your body fat, detoxify the body, increase strength and endurance, recover faster, reduce infections, enhance immunity … and the list goes on.” Following the lead of many professional athletes, such as the players of the NRL’s West Tigers and Melbourne Storm, local Townsville sporting teams have been booking in private hot yoga classes at Lighten Up to take advantage of the health benefits of infrared rays.
“One of the things I love the most about being a yoga instructor is helping people live a healthier, more balanced and happier life,” says Bec, who studied law and psychology at university, but then left her successful corporate career to serve and help other people. “Yoga gives more than it asks of you. It re-inspires the good in people and puts a sparkle back in their eye.” If you are interested in attending Power Burn or any other hot or warm yoga classes it is advised to book online through their website to avoid disappointment.

GRANT COLLINS | AUDIOLOGIST | CLARITY HEARING SOLUTIONS
PURCHASING ONLINE? BUYER BEWARE! Advertising for purchasing hearing aids online is a cause for concern for audiologists.
As part of my day-to-day work I look at online research on hearing and subsequent rehabilitation treatment. Consequently my browser analyses my search data and I’m bombarded with a lot of hearing aid company ads popping up. In a worrying trend, some of these are for online sales. Today I’m going to provide my opinion as well as the Australian Association of Audiologists in Private Practice’s (AAAPP) position statement about online hearing aid purchases. Firstly, any Australian distributing hearing aid manufacturer that has hearing aids approved for fitting through the Office of Hearing Services (OHS) will not provide their devices to be distributed online. There’s no official regulatory body in the private hearing aid industry ensuring that devices have minimum specifications, feature requirements, warranty and servicing arrangements. However almost all reputable hearing aid manufacturers supply their product lines to pensioners/DVA recipients through the Office of Hearing Services scheme, and these devices have to meet a very strict criteria of minimum requirements. If any of these aids are purchased online then they will automatically lose all their warranty and product support from the manufacturer. So if you purchase a set of OHS-accredited hearing aids online you
If you buy hearing aids online you’re only gaining a small portion of the treatment plan, much more important is the input provided by an audiologist.
won’t have any warranty or service options on the devices themselves. Secondly, the hearing aid is only a small portion of what’s required to have a successful hearing treatment outcome. If you buy hearing aids online you’re only gaining a small portion of the treatment plan, much more important is the input provided by an audiologist. The AAAPP position on Internet sales, which I strongly agree with, states that audiologists are trained to undertake hearing assessments, diagnose hearing disorders and prescribe treatment plans – just part of which may be the fitting of specifically selected devices, such as hearing aids. When audiologists fit hearing aids, they provide tailored counselling and communication training to ensure you make the most of all listening situations. In order to gain benefit from hearing aids, it’s important to have realistic expectations of what the instruments will do for you. This is because some hearing losses cause a simple loss of volume, whereas others cause processing disorders that result in sounds like speech never sounding clear, regardless of which hearing aid is fitted. Each individual should understand their hearing loss before purchasing hearing aids so they know what to expect. Hearing aids do not immediately change how
an individual hears – they only change the sound that reaches the ear. It takes time and specialised training for the brain to learn to interpret the sounds delivered by a hearing aid. Some individuals receive more benefit than others, depending on the characteristics of the hearing loss. Audiologists carry out a number of different tests to understand the characteristics of the individual hearing loss you have, and the results are explained to you and reported to the medical doctor when further medical intervention is required. Those results guide any decisions the individual and his or her audiologist will make about if, or which, hearing aid is the best solution for your hearing needs. Purchasing hearing aids without a professional consultation may be cheaper than acquiring them through the professional services of an audiologist, but the essential component that leads to successful rehabilitation will be missed. Some Internetbased companies recommend bypassing the audiologist and determine by themselves if a hearing aid is needed. If you decide to purchase hearing aids online then we suggest you consult an audiologist first and discuss all available treatment options before deciding which approach is best for you.

JANE WILKINSON | CLINICAL EDUCATOR & PHYSIOTHERAPIST | A&I PHYSIOTHERAPY
COMMON RUNNING INJURIES
As the weather cools down and the calendar of events heats up in Townsville, so can the level of niggles in the legs. Runners are prone to various lower limb injuries. What are they and what can be done?
Running is a great way to exercise. It’s free and easy to do, just pop your shoes on and head out the door. Townsville has many beautiful paths and trails to enjoy especially in this winter weather. It’s at this time of year that runners start to increase their mileage and find that new aches and pains creep into the legs. Ideally all runners would love every step to be pain-free. Yet the reality is most runners may be nursing a slightly sore foot, tight hamstring, or painful calf. Don’t let it get it serious! What causes it? Running is repetitive. Runners are sensitive to change. Often it’s subtle changes that have been made, or need to be made that can cause problems. A change in terrain, going from running on the flat to hills, road to trails, footpath to grass, can manifest problems. Changes in footwear, a new pair of shoes or needing a new pair of shoes can trigger pain from the foot right up to the hip. Alterations in distance also need to be considered. If you normally run five kilometres and then jump up to ten, the legs may start to complain.
Ideally all runners would love every step to be pain-free.
What are the most common injuries? While this list is by no mean exhaustive, some of the more common lower limb complaints include; • Patellofemoral pain syndrome or runner’s knee which is caused by an irritation to the cartilage on the back of the knee cap. Commonly felt during or after longer runs or descending hills or stairs. • Achilles tendonitis. This can be felt anywhere along the length of the tendon from where it starts at the base of the calf to where it inserts on the heal. • Hamstring pain. This may be caused by a variety of things from tightness to weakness to an imbalance between muscle groups. • Plantar fasciitis. Often feels like an ache along your arch of your foot or pain at the bottom of your heel. It’s usually worse first thing in the morning. • Medial tibial stress syndrome or ‘shinsplints’. Pain along the front of your calf caused by small muscle tears.
• Iliotibial band syndrome. The ITB runs along the outside of the thigh from the hip to the knee. Pain can be felt anywhere along that track, right down to the outside of the knee. • Stress fractures. These are the least common and most serious of this group of injuries. They can occur in the shin, feet or heels. What can be done? As with most things, prevention is better than cure. Taking the time to do some ‘runners homework’ can pay off in the long term and prevent niggles from becoming full blown injuries. Get into a routine of stretching and strengthening muscles especially the hamstrings, quads and calves. Running doesn’t do all the work for you. Be mindful of your footwear, it forms the barrier between you and the road. Ice therapy plays an important role in early injury management. Massage and using foam rollers can also be useful. Most importantly, get in to see a physiotherapist early. One session may be all it takes to keep you on the road.

LEANNE SCOTT | CERTIFIED FITGENES PRACTITIONER | CORE NOURISHMENT
HEALTHY FROM THE INSIDE OUT
The saying ‘you are what you eat’ takes on new significance when you ponder the fact that, cell for cell, we are 10 times more bacteria than human.
For every human gene you possess there are about 100 bacterial ones that also make up who you are. So, when you do the maths, it means you’re one-third of one per cent of who you think you are! Welcome to your inner microbiome – allow me to introduce you to 100 trillion of your closest friends and why everything you put in your mouth determines theirs and your health. Each one of us inherits our ‘micro-world’ from our mother, picking up billions of microbes as we move through her bacteria-laden birth canal. Those who are delivered by C-section are colonised by a less diverse array of bacteria. Research now shows that those who miss out on this vital inoculation may need support through the supplementation of baby-friendly probiotic flora to reduce their risk of depressed immunity, digestive disorders and food sensitivities. We also receive microbes from our mother’s milk, which allows early microbial colonisation of the gut, creating enhanced resistance. The quest to understand our native microbes is becoming big science and, in the very near future, big business, as it’s actually very im-

portant for public health. We rely on these microscopic inhabitants more than we realise. They provide us with nutrients that would otherwise be denied to us and prevent the growth of harmful bacteria. Negatively changing their community by diet and environment is now being linked to disease and their effects are not localised to just the gut – they also affect the brain. Not only your physical health but also your mental health is deeply influenced by the health of the microbial zoo that lives within. Your gut microbes affect your overall brain function, from basic mood swings to the development of serious illnesses like Autism, Alzheimer’s and Schizophrenia. The health of our inner ‘friends’ are continuously affected by our environment, diet and lifestyle choices. If our microbiome is damaged and thrown out of balance (dysbiosis), all manner of health consequences can result. Some of the factors that increase our risk include: refined sugar, GMO/processed foods, pesticides, gluten, antibiotics, NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), antacids and stress. The best way to optimise your gut flora is

through your diet. A gut-healthy diet is one rich in whole, unprocessed, unsweetened foods, along with traditionally cultured foods. But before these foundational foods can work their magic in your body, you have to eliminate the damaging foods that get in their way. A good place to start is by drastically reducing your label-bearing food sources. Processed foods can harm your good bacteria, and sugar promotes the growth of unfriendly inhabitants. Incorporating traditional foods such as sauerkraut, naturally fermented pickles, miso, tempeh, fermented yogurt, grass-fed meats and organic produce will help heal, rebuild and ‘re-educate’ your gut. There is emerging research linking traditional dietary practices and positive mental health. The extent to which traditional dietary items may reduce inflammation by improving the health of our microbiota, as well as our brains, is yet to be fully realised but it’s one of many reasons fields such as integrative or nutritional psychiatry is quickly becoming the mainstay approach throughout America. So the next time you’re out there putting the ‘pedal to the metal’ of your health, you may want to think again about who is really driving the car.

LAURELYN HIGGINS | HYGIENIST | SMILE DENTAL
WORST DIET EVER!
Smile Dental’s Hygienist Laurelyn Higgins has been following the good, the bad and the unusual dental stories from around the world.
Oil pulling craze Several patients have asked me about oil pulling and its benefits in the mouth. It’s an ancient treatment where cooking oil is swished and sucked in the mouth for 10 to 20 minutes before brushing in the morning. The treatment claims to fix everything from migraines to gum disease by cleansing the mouth of toxins and bacteria. While there is very little scientific evidence to substantiate the claims, some folks like to use it because it’s non-toxic, non-staining, readily available and inexpensive. The question is: while oil pulling won’t hurt you, does it really help? Stick out your tongue and say, “Ahh…” Here are some interesting things that you might see. A white tongue can be the sign of an oral yeast infection which may happen if you’ve been taking antibiotics. Strange shapes on the tongue which have a map-like appearance are due to the loss of papillae and are quite harmless. Teeth marks along the sides of the tongue can mean that you clench your teeth which can be quite harmful. And black, hairy tongue which is caused by smoking, alcohol or medications is totally reversible.
Dieticians are not happy about the Lemon Diet where you drink only lemon-based drinks for two weeks and lose a huge amount of weight. They warn us to stay away of fad diets because they do not create a balanced, life-changing routine.
Green drinks: stained smiles Freshly-pressed juices and smoothies are packed with essential vitamins and minerals but they also contain an unwelcome surprise called chromogens. Chromogens are dark pigments which can easily adhere to your enamel and stain your teeth. The effect from drinking juice is greater than eating dark leafy greens, beets and carrots. To protect your smile, try sipping through a straw then rinsing and limiting the amount and /or frequency that you drink them. Worst diet ever Dietitians are not happy about the Lemon Diet where you drink only lemon-based drinks for two weeks and lose a huge amount of weight. They warn us to stay away of fad diets because they do not create a balanced, life-changing routine. And they are unsafe. Not safe for your body and certainly not safe for your teeth with tons of acid swimming around in your mouth. Just think about it.
So brushing the insides first with a dry brush only (no toothpaste) lets the tongue feel if the teeth are really clean. And people tend to brush longer where they start and not where they finish. Then brushing a second time with toothpaste delivers fluoride and a minty fresh taste. I’ve tried it and it works for me. Electrically accelerated and enhanced remineralisation This is a great story about a new technique to help teeth repair themselves which is being developed in the UK. A tiny electric current which is painless pushes calcium and phosphate minerals into the tooth to repair and remineralise tooth decay. It will mean no more needles, drilling or fillings. And it’ll be a lot easier for the patient and heaps better for the teeth.
Dry brushing the insides first Sound weird? Some hygienists from America are promoting the idea to reduce germ levels in the mouth. The insides of the lower teeth are more prone to plaque and scale build-up.

AARON SAGER | PERSONAL TRAINER | SNAP FITNESS TOWNSVILLE
FINDING GREAT PERSONAL TRAINING
Hiring a great Personal Trainer could be the best decision you ever make, resulting in life-changing outcomes! Hiring an average or bad trainer can be a waste of time and money. Knowing what’s involved in a great personal training regime can be tricky – especially if you’ve never experienced one before!
When looking for a suitable Personal Trainer, there are a number of different areas all good training regimes need to cover to ensure you reach the best results possible. So what should you be looking for? The first thing is having the right qualifications! All Personal Trainers should have their Certificates III and IV in Fitness and a Senior First Aid certificate with CPR at the very least. Personal Trainers with those qualifications should have a good knowledge of the muscle groups and exercises, different energy systems, some basic nutrition training and knowledge in areas such as muscle growth, fat-loss and strength training. Further qualifications can involve specific courses, diplomas and university degrees.
Great Personal Trainers are there for your benefit, not for theirs.
Once the right qualifications are in place, a good personal training regime will cover the following areas: Accountability Hiring a Personal Trainer will hold you accountable to attending a number of exercise sessions per week at a minimum, but what ensures good results is accountability in other areas as well! Are you being held
accountable for the food you eat? Are you being held accountable for the exercise you are doing outside of your personal training sessions? Have you recorded down specific goals and a time frame to complete them? These actions will contribute to better results due to effective accountability. Support Most Personal Trainers will construct a weights program for you to complete in the gym. Are you getting additional support though? This may include extra exercise to do outside of scheduled personal training sessions or some good recipes to use if you are stuck for nutritional ideas. If you go away for a week or two, do you have exercise plans to complete in this time? Proper support is essential for excellent results. On the flip-side, you don’t want to rely on your Trainer for every little thing as time goes on, as this will take away from your ability to be accountable to yourself and achieve life-long habit changes.
excellent results. Can your Personal Trainer provide you with these? Sometimes this can be tough if your Trainer is new to the scene. If this is the case, are current clients happy with their progress? What do the staff in that gym think about that particular Trainer? Personality and Training Style Choose the style of personal training that you most agree with. Do you like training in groups? Do you want to train with a partner? Do you respond more to positive or negative reinforcement? These are all questions you need to ask before committing to a style of training as some trainers may be better suited to certain personality types. Is your trainer well-known or liked in the gym or community? What is their reputation? Once again, choosing the right personal training for you is a critical decision and can be the difference between a life-changing commitment or a waste of time and money. Make the best decision for yourself as great Personal Trainers are there for your benefit, not for theirs.

TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF? I am a yoga teacher, currently working on my new venture yoginiwellness where I hope to travel the world writing about yoga and retreats and general wellness. Another teacher and I recently took a group of blind orphans swimming in Indonesia – it really opened up my eyes to the world. DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE: I guess in this western world my style would be ‘boho’ but other than that I guess I’d say pretty free and relaxed, dressing shouldn’t be that hard! LABELS YOU LIKE? Lulu lemon had me at hello and anything locally designed. BEST SHOPPING TRIP? LA vintage markets definitely! YOUR STYLE GURU? Anyone who’s free in their choices of clothing. I really admire people who dare to be different. YOU’D NEVER BE CAUGHT WEARING? Anything horribly uncomfortable! WARDROBE ITEM YOU SHOULD PART WITH BUT CAN’T BRING YOURSELF TO? My vintage denim jeans that don’t fit anymore and rip a little bit more every time I sit down. I had to cut the front of the legs open a little bit just to get my legs to be able to fit in! SHOES OR DRESS? Definitely dress. ANYTHING ELSE YOU’D LIKE TO MENTION? Be kind to yourself always.

SHANELLE BUCHANAN Born and bred in Mount Isa with three sisters and a brother, I have lived in Brisbane and London before settling in Townsville with my husband Charles and our black and white border collies, Sammi and Alfie. It’s a very simple life for us and our fur-babies, and we love the relaxed lifestyle that Townsville provides. The best part about my job is that I get to work with people who genuinely want to make a difference and to contribute to our community.
MY BAG AND PURSE Kate Spade New York. My cousin introduced me to this gorgeous line of bags, shoes and jewellery on a family trip to China last year, so when we honeymooned in New York over Christmas, I knew exactly where I would be heading to pick up a new handbag. A girl needs a purse to match her handbag! RED WINGS PLAYER CARDS
On New Year’s Day this year, my husband and I shared a once in a lifetime experience with some friends at the National Hockey League Winter Classic – an outdoor ice hockey game in the midst of winter outside Detroit. Picture 105,000 fans, -26 degree chill factor, and it snowed the entire game.
EYE PILLOW One of my most anticipated moments of every week is relaxation time at yoga. It’s rare that all my inner thoughts are quietened and the peace and calm that yoga practice brings to my life keeps me balanced. HAND CREAM I picked up this L’Occitane hand cream in Canada while we were on our honeymoon. I love the smell and the texture. PEN My husband and I visited an
amazing cocktail bar in New York City, ‘Employees Only’. It’s also the place of our last drink, as we’ve set ourselves a challenge of one year sobriety (no booze!). We’re halfway!
PHOTO My darling husband and I
spent the most amazing, relaxing day at Cockatoo Island, off Sydney Harbour a few years ago – chilling in deck chairs by the water, drinking cocktails and catching up with friends. Best day ever!
BUTTERFLY EARRINGS While on a
working holiday in London, one of my favourite spots was the Spitalfields Markets. I spotted these earrings and they were a bit out of my budget, but after many, many trips back to look at them, I finally bought them.

CAR KEY I recently spent a year working with a fantastic team out in the mines in Mount Isa. The dump truck on my key ring is a constant reminder of home, my family out there and the wonderful childhood I had in Mount Isa. HUSBAND’S WALLET I’m the
proud Minister of Finance in our household and happy to hold the purse strings!
LOVE HEART Picked up this wooden heart in Port Douglas which is where my husband and I eloped in December, with our parents as witnesses. I married an absolute sweetheart. He carved a bush at home into a love heart, which is where this sign lives. To me, it says ‘love lives here’. Charles calls it his ‘brownie point factory’. STRING OF PEARLS
A cherished gift from my parents on my 21st birthday.
TREASURED PENDANT We are hoping to start a family soon, and some dear friends of ours have loaned us a treasured family heirloom, a St Gerard-Majella pendant, the patron saint of mothers. EARRINGS Found these

EWEN JONES MP | FEDERAL MEMBER FOR HERBERT
IT WILL ALWAYS BE CLOSE TO HOME The latest death in Afghanistan is tragic. I have participated in Condolence Motions in Parliament. It is not a happy experience. Don’t get me wrong, I think we were there for a reason and the stories I heard from ADF personnel who come home about the good we were doing reinforced that. It is just the loss of life, in its prime, with so much still to do…
IT IS STRANGELY A BEAUTIFUL THING TO HEAR ABOUT AN ACT OF BRAVERY OR SELFLESS SERVICE.
I went to Port Moresby for ANZAC Day this year. It is not as big a dawn service as Townsville, but it is a truly moving service. Bomana War Cemetery is home to the most Australian war graves anywhere in the world. While you sit there in the dark, the glow of the lights gives you a glimpse of the rows and rows of white concrete crosses. As dawn breaks, and the last post sounds, you see them in their truest perspective. A large number of fallen who had so much to offer and never saw old age. Part of their Dawn Service is to tell the stories of three people, men and women, who lie before us. It is strangely a beautiful thing to hear about an act of bravery or selfless service. It is done in a matter of fact tone. It is not dramatic, but it is very effective in bringing the story of war and its consequences home to all who attend. Being asked to represent the Prime Minister at that service was truly an honour. I spoke about being there just a few weeks prior and being shown the grave of Cpl John French. It brought me back to grade 3 social studies at Texas State
School where we heard about his heroics. Then, as an 8 year old, PNG was at the other end of the world, so very far away. Today, we all know that Port Moresby is the closest capital city to Townsville and we have so much more to do with the country just to our north. Part of my speech was about the nature of war, and its consequences for all of us. Then, the lines were set – you knew who the enemy was and where they were. Today, we fight different kinds of wars, and different stresses are experienced. One is not more deadly than the other, they are just different. People, young people, still die and never return. Others return broken and need surgery and intensive treatment to get their broken bodies back together. The last kind of hurt is the one which does not show itself easily. It is this one where we have the biggest challenge. We need to always be aware that PTSD affects not just the returning ADF Member, it affects their family, their school community, their neighbourhood, and our entire community. We need to be a strong community for all who suffer wounds. We are a great city and a great community. The work done by our community leaders to enhance and grow our relationship with Lavarack and the RAAF Base must be the foundation on which our city progresses. We must be an equal partner and never shy away from the challenges before us. That is just not our style.

HOW DO I TEACH MY CHILD TO BE INDEPENDENT
(WHEN I’VE ALWAYS DONE EVERYTHING FOR THEM?)
IT IS NEVER TOO LATE TO TEACH THEM TO HELP AND TAKE CARE OF THEMSELVES.
Toddlers love to help mum, but of course it takes far longer to let them help then it does to quickly do it yourself. Before too long the years have flown and you start to realise (no matter what their age) that you have continued to do everything for your child. The turning point could be when your prep child has to dress themself for a school swimming lesson and doesn’t know how, or you have a teenager that doesn’t know how to put their washing away or to cook anything! Regardless of the when you realise that your child needs to be more independent – it is never too late to teach them to help and take care of themselves. So where do you start? Start with changing your thinking. All children from the age of one onwards can help! Helping is contributing to a family and having a role to play. The trick is figuring out firstly what is realistic for their age to be able to do and then changing what you expect, then changing how you parent. So ask around of other parents who have children of similar age about the ways their childs helps, think about what you were expected to do as you grew up, (we have smaller families now so parents do more for their children) and if in doubt ask a parenting expert for guidance. Next just start! Explain the change in how your household
works to your child, regardless of age. Then start to ‘hand over’ jobs big and small from putting their towel back on the towel rail, to putting their pile of washing away – in the cupboard, in the right place. The upside of ‘handing over’ is that you are giving and teaching your child life skills in how to look after themselves and their room which will one day be their house, they will know where to find things in their room e.g. clothes, shoes if they were the one to put them away. Think putting their own washing away, setting the table, clearing the table, stacking and unpacking the dishwasher, making their bed, dressing themselves, emptying the rubbish, tidying the common living areas, hosing out, getting their own breakfast, ordering take out on the phone, getting a bottle of milk etc. Then just break the job down into steps, show them how, then ask and expect them to do it. Make it age appropriate but beware, kids are capable of doing far, far more than a parent thinks they can! So don’t be deceived or guilted by age thinking ‘they couldn’t possibly…’ And remember the best you can do for your child as a parent is ‘to teach them how to do it for themself’ not to do it for them. THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE HOME THERE ARE MANY REASONS WHY ADULT CHILDREN STAY OR RETURN TO THE FAMILY HOME. THESE FOUR LOCALS SHARE THEIR STORIES ABOUT WHY THEY’VE CHOSEN TO LIVE WITH THEIR FAMILY. WORDS COURTNEY FRANK
Sally’s* Story Sally’s story is a positive one filled with lots of joy. She has been sharing her home with her son Ben and his wife Megan since February this year and wouldn’t have it any other way. Ben and Megan along with their two little boys are currently building their own home and are living with Sally to save money during the process. However Sally doesn’t have to worry, they won’t be going too far away from her once they leave; their home is being built on the same block of land as hers! With three adults and two boys under the age of four, you would think it would be a little crowded, but Sally admits it has been a real joy having them around. She tries to give them the space they need to be a family by going to bed a little earlier, or trying not to take Megan’s side in an argument over her son Ben! Sally often jokes about how Megan is great at cooking and cleaning, but doesn’t touch the ironing! A skill that Megan might have to quickly learn once their home is finished just in time for Christmas! Overall the experience has been really comforting for Sally after losing her husband and finding her house a little bit on the quiet side. She loves the fact she can come home every day to a family to care for and the most rewarding part of it all; watching her two grandson’s grow up. Ben and Megan’s house should be finished in a few months time, and whilst it will be nice to have some peace and quiet, Sally knows that her family won’t be too far away.
Margot’s* Story Margot is a lady who loves her peace and quiet. Alas, she is only allowed this luxury every alternate week of the year. She has a 32-yearold son named Sam who is a FIFO worker. Along with her husband, the pair fly in and out of home for a week on, week off contract. Margot and her husband own a beautiful 600-acre cattle property near the Burdekin River and whilst they have three wonderful children, it is her son Sam who chooses to call
the expansive property ‘home’ every alternate week. Margot admits her son is not a man of many words, and although she confesses he can be a pain in the bum sometimes, she genuinely loves having him around. However Sam’s major downfall is that he is yet to help out with the cooking and cleaning around the home, and is always doing little things to annoy her like “sticking his finger in my ear as he walks past.” Although there are plans in the pipeline for Sam to build his own house in the near future, Margot has a plan of her own and admits that she always has her eyes peeled for a potential girlfriend for Sam, even recruiting one of her daughters to the case! As much as she loves having both her husband and her son home every fortnight, she confesses that she secretly looks forward to her week of peace and quiet come Monday each week!
Carly’s* Story After moving out of home and pursuing the big city life at just 18 years old, the last thing Carly had on her mind was moving back home with her parents. She moved to Brisbane to attend University and after four years of juggling full time employment and full-time University, she realised that she missed her family too much to stay away. The eldest of four children, Carly’s family has always been closer than most, and after realising that soon it would be too late to see her siblings grow up, she decided to make the move back home. Although the experience hasn’t entirely been what Carly had expected, moving back home as an adult was never going to be an easy transition. After years of independence and freedom, sharing a bedroom and bathroom and competing with five other large personalities, is proving to be a daily struggle. That is not to say that Carly doesn’t love being back with her family. With three other women’s wardrobes to choose from, and a brother and father who share her love for the NRL, Carly knows that she is incredibly fortunate to have such a beautiful
78 DUO MAGAZINE AUGUST 2014 duomagazine.com.au
and considerate family. Whilst there are plans to find a house of her own and move out, the process is proving to be a little difficult so far. Until then, there’s going to be a lot more noise, bickering and arguing for her parents to handle, but at least there’s a whole lot of love.
Anna’s* Story Anna counts herself lucky to live in an amazing house with her parents and teenage sister. She comes home after work everyday to a meal prepared, some company on the couch and the unconditional love only a family can give. The fridge is stocked with fresh food, her washing is done and folded on the end of the bed, and she gets to sit down and share stories of the day with people who genuinely care and listen. Whilst she admits she is spoilt, she is incredibly grateful. It’s not all sunshine and rainbows though. Like all family’s they argue; and Anna admits that it can sometimes feel like she can’t get away from everyone, and their separate lifestyles can clash from time to time. After living away in Brisbane for university, moving home has certainly been an adjustment for her. She had enjoyed an independent lifestyle in Brisbane, with the up’s and down’s of freedom, surviving on a limited student bank account and living in a share house full of friends. All of a sudden, she was back in her childhood room again, with her sister wanting to borrow (steal) her belongings, her mum waiting for her to come home after a night on the town, and her dad reminding her that she needs to tidy up after making breakfast. Some things never change, no matter how old you get. Whilst there is a definite feeling of missing her independence, Anna is looking forward to moving away again and living out a new adventure. Whilst she will miss her mum, she imagines she will still call her at the grocery store, begging her to decide what she should buy to make herself dinner that night. *NAMES HAVE BEEN CHANGED

ANGEL PAWS A GOOD CAUSE
WILLING TO RESCUE ‘PROBLEM PETS’ AND TEND TO THEM MENTALLY AND PHYSICALLY, ANGEL PAWS INC DESEXES, VACCINATES AND MICROCHIPS UNWANTED ANIMALS BEFORE FINDING THEM A FOREVER HOME. For the past two-and-a-half years, Angel Paws Inc has been operated by an amazing group of volunteers who dedicate their free time to help as many animals as they can. Angel Paws Inc founder Ayla Watt does her utmost to make sure all of the team’s sick, injured and unwanted ‘fur kids’ find loving new homes. If it weren’t for Ayla and the Angel Paws Inc crew, puppies like Dobby wouldn’t be alive today. “The little staffie came into my care at about 10 days old with a little brother,” Ayla says. “I nursed them through the night for 12 hours until I could get them to a vet. His brother didn’t make it, and
Dobby was touch and go for a few days. He needed to be tube-fed and, on top of a staph infection, was riddled with hook worms.” Dobby was with Angel Paws Inc until he was about six months old, when one of the group’s foster carers realised she and her partner couldn’t live without him. “We’re always looking for people to adopt our fur kids, as well as offer their time as foster carers,” Ayla says. “Come along to Pets Domain on the last weekend of every month for our Adoption Weekend, 10am till 3pm Saturday and Sunday.”

A FITTING FAREWELL
THE CARING TEAM AT PET HEAVEN NQ HAVE BEEN HELPING PEOPLE COMMEMORATE THEIR ANIMAL COMPANIONS SINCE OPENING NORTH QUEENSLAND’S FIRST PET CEMETERY AND CREMATORIUM IN BLUEWATER IN 2003. A locally owned and operated family business, Pet Heaven NQ services the pet-owning public from Townsville to Mt Isa, down to Bowen and up to Cardwell. Pet funeral director Kathy Girvan says that, as well as cremation (ashes returned or interred) and pet burial, Pet Heaven offers a variety of optional extras, such as crafted timber photo ashes boxes, brass and pewter urns and memorial jewellery in which you can place a small amount of fur or ash. Framed pet paw moulds, garden headstones and plaques are further options. “We offer a special remembrance service, with booklets, to assist the whole family in this sad time of losing their pet,” Kathy says. “Our staff are all compassionate
and professional as well as dedicated to providing the best choices for pet owners when they lose their beloved pet. “We all have pets ourselves and offer truly respectful care, empathy and understanding as we create a special memorial for our clients’ companions. “Our pets give us so much pleasure. They offer unconditional love and are our companions through every circumstance. It’s the right thing to farewell them in a dignified and sensitive way, after so many years of loyalty.” Kathy says it has been a privilege to meet so many other people who are deeply passionate about their furry, feathered or scaled mates.

STEP UP, STEP UP!
THE ACROBAT REHEARSALS ARE UNDERWAY, THE SIDESHOW ALLEY IS BEING CONSTRUCTED, AND THE RINGMASTER IS PREPARING TO EXCITE THE CROWD. NO, THE CIRCUS ISN’T COMING TO TOWN, THE TOWNSVILLE HOSPITAL FOUNDATION IS SET TO HOLD ITS INAUGURAL GALA FUNDRAISER, THE BIG TOP GALA. SO, COME ONE, COME ALL, SEPTEMBER 13 IS SET TO BE A NIGHT OF FUN.
“UNFORTUNATELY, TOO MANY CHILDREN NEED TREATMENT FOR VARIOUS ILLNESSES AND INJURIES. WE CAN’T CHANGE THAT, BUT WE CAN IMPROVE THEIR POTENTIAL FOR OPTIMAL RECOVERY.” FAY BARKER
With the Big Top Gala only weeks away, preparations are in full swing to make the Townsville Hospital Foundation’s inaugural charity gala the biggest and best it can be. And if the entertainment and auction items are anything to go by, it will indeed be a big night. Senior Manager at Price Waterhouse Coopers, Wayde Chiesa is part of the eight-member volunteer committee organising the gala event, and says the evening will be a kaleidoscope of fun and fundraising. “For the Big Top Gala, we have combined what you would expect of a gala event with a circus theme to amp up the ‘fun’ element,” reveals Wayde. “There will be the expected elements of a formal sit-down event, with high-quality menu, premium

drinks package, charity auction and big-name entertainment, but there will also be acrobats, a sideshow alley and some impressive auction items.” The September 13 event, sponsored by Windmill Bricklaying, Boheme Beauty and Maidment Developments, will be held at Townsville Entertainment and Convention Centre, where Laluna Youth Arts performers will deliver a spectacular aerial acrobatic show, the popular 1RAR band will keep the crowd engaged, a sideshow alley will give guests the chance to win prizes, and entertainment reporter, comedian and TV/radio personality Michele Mahone will MC the evening.

“You could say Michele Mahone is the event’s ringmaster. She’ll keep the night moving along and crack the whip if needed,” says Wayde. “Michele’s a good fit for this cause because she’s a parent who knows the importance of great healthcare support for a child, and she has a great style of humour. The theme of the evening is ‘fun’, so that’s what she’s promised to bring.” The gala evening’s Charity Auction will feature big-ticket items including a 20-lineal-metre in-ground pool to the value of $30,000, a one- or two-bedroom low-set granny flat to the value of $90,000. To view terms and conditions for the swimming pool and granny flat, or to place your bid online, visit Pickles Auctions www.pickles.com.au/general/item/search/-/listing/listSaleItems/7702426 A sneak peek at a few of the other items up for grabs include, a Hamilton Island 5-star Getaway and a VIP Ricky Martin Experience including a meet and greet with the megastar. The committee have some other amazing items up their sleeves but you’ll have to get a ticket and come along to find out. Fay Barker, Chair of the Townsville Hospital Foundation Board, says the Big Top Gala is a chance for the foundation to raise awareness about the important work it does, and raise funds to redevelop the Children’s Ward. “Research shows children respond best to treatment when they are in an environment that supports family-centred care. Our redevelopment project will enable this, so it is critical that we achieve our fundraising goal; and this gala will help us do that,” explains Fay. “Unfortunately, too many children need treatment for various illnesses and injuries. We can’t change that, but we can improve their potential for optimal recovery by changing the environment in which these children heal.”
Entertainment reporter, comedian and TV/radio personality Michele Mahone will MC the evening.

YOU SEEM SO PERFECT!
When we start a new relationship, the first few months can feel like bliss. We may think we have found the perfect partner and they may feel the same about us. However, caution is needed as Rose-coloured Glasses Syndrome is usually at play.
Think back to past relationships and it is easy to remember that at the beginning everything seems fantastic. We meet a person, start dating and all of a sudden we are walking on sunshine. It just feels so right. How many times have we said to our friends, ‘I think this could be serious’ after just two weeks of dating or how many times have we felt like the other person just really, really understands us. In essence, we feel like we have met our soul mate and that this person is The One. The problem that is lurking beneath the surface, however, is that we don’t really know this person well enough to be thinking this way. Our thoughts pretty quickly move into the future and all of a sudden we are secretly flipping through bridal magazines or looking at potential first home options. We start thinking too much about future dreams instead of concentrating on the reality that is in front of us. This new relationship may indeed end up being The One, but at that moment in time we are suffering from Rosecoloured Glasses Syndrome and we have to acknowledge that. Rose-Coloured Glasses
RoseColoured Glasses Syndrome, let’s call it RCGS for ease, is created in the first place by two main factors.
Syndrome, let’s call it RCGS for ease, is created in the first place by two main factors. Firstly, we are dealing with physical attraction. As we all know, physical attraction is what first helped us to notice the other person, so of course, it is very strong at the beginning of a relationship. Physical attraction is influencing how we are seeing the other person and how we interpret their words and actions. It is also influencing the attributes we may be choosing to ignore because the physical attraction is so strong. Don’t get me wrong, physical attraction is an important element at the beginning of a relationship, we just have to keep in mind that it is definitely playing a part in the way we are ‘viewing’ the other person. Secondly, we also have to realise that the amount of time we are spending with that person and the activities we are enjoying with them, is the other RCGS factor. When we are dating someone, we are often only seeing them a few times a week at the most, for relatively short amounts of time e.g. dinner at a restaurant or watching a movie.
We have to keep in mind that we are not seeing this person in all circumstances and we are not seeing how they handle all their emotions, particularly the tricky ones. In the early stages we don’t get to observe the other person when they are really stressed from work, someone has annoyed them or something has upset them. Due to these short bursts of time together we are also not getting a true understanding of their backgrounds, belief systems and views on different subject matters. Finally when we are on a date, let’s be honest, we are doing pretty fun things. There is no doom and gloom when we are having lunch on a Sunday afternoon or enjoying a night at our favourite restaurant. So to put it all in context, when we meet someone and start dating, we are spending short amounts of time together with someone we really like, doing fun things. Rose-coloured Glasses Syndrome is a natural stage of any relationship but the best way to deal with it, is to be aware about its existence in the first place.

WOMEN AND FINANCIAL PLANNING
Let’s face it, a high percentage of all purchase decisions are made or directly influenced by women, also many women handle the household finances. Despite this only a minority of women actually establish a financial plan.
So are women really that different when it comes to financial planning? The unequivocal answer is: YES. Women’s financial needs differ to men and women face a whole range of issues that are often gender specific. These issues can threaten a women’s financial security, they require long term planning to ensure financial success. Here are a few reason why it is imperative that women’s financial security requires long term planning to ensure financial success.
It is important that you do get help from a professional that you feel conformable with sooner rather than later.
1. Broken employment patterns. Women are often the primary caregivers and take time off work to care for children, ageing parents and grandchildren. 2. Women live longer than men but earn less. Typically women out live men on average of five years but they also usually have up to one third less put away for retirement.
3. More women are involved with part time or casual work. In 2012, 71% of part time workers were women. Add to this that the majority of casual work carried out is also by women. This leaves women disadvantaged in terms of income, superannuation and retirement. Less hours, less entitlements and less money. 4. Divorce and STD. Over 40% marriages now end in divorce. When a relationship ends it can become a financial battle over who gets what. Many women end up with what is called Sexually Transmitted Debt. 5. Women tend to delay financial planning advice and also under value themselves when it comes to their family contribution. Think about who you care for or give support to and what affect it would have if you were no longer able to provide that care. Women are often the nucleus of the family and their contribution should not be undervalued.
Many women are uncomfortable in seeking professional advice particularly if they have low super balances. However, it is important that you do get help from a professional that you feel conformable with sooner rather than later. It is never too late to take control of your finances and future. There are a range of strategies you can easily implement to get you on track and moving forward. Investing in you and your future is the greatest investment you can make. KEEPING THE NEW (FINANCIAL) YEAR ON TRACK Have you ever noticed that by February your New Year’s resolutions have already been overtaken by ‘life’? Having resolutions is great, although it is easy to let your motivation wain as the excitement of a new beginning wears off.
The new financial year is a great opportunity to set your business resolutions, with a clear and measurable path to achieve them (as opposed to my attempts at being able to run 10km). There is no right or wrong when it comes to setting goals, just like there are no magic formulas for being successful in business. Each business, each industry has its own unique set of challenges, so there is no roadmap to success. One thing that is necessary though is to plan, because we all know how easy it is to let life get in the way and in no time the year is almost over (again!). That is where having a budget and a corresponding cash flow comes in handy. A goal of yours may be to increase sales. This could be accomplished by cutting your prices or maybe hiring a new salesperson. Perhaps you could advertise or have a one-time sale? There are plenty of options – BUT how can you help determine which is the smartest decision? By setting an accurate budget, i.e. how much money you actually have to spend, we can develop a cash flow forecast, which will layout the upcoming cash inflows and outflows of
You will be in a much better position to make an educated and calculated decision about your next step.
your business based upon on your own data. We can even work with a set of assumptions in order to forecast the likely outcomes of any investment decisions you are contemplating. You might be considering a new vehicle, a new premise, trying a new product line or even downsizing your operation. These tools will allow you to monitor how you are performing. But what does all that produce? What good is a forecast? Well, to be brutally honest – in isolation it would be pointless. Preparing a budget does not mean you will actually stick to it, just like simply setting a resolution of being able to run 10km doesn’t mean tomorrow you will run that distance. The same goes for business. Your budget needs to be reviewed regularly. You need to actively consult your cash flow to see what bills you have coming due this month. You need to consider your cash position if you have to make any out of the ordinary purchases and calculate what impact it will have. Every time you look forward and plan, you are one step closer to your goal. It’s not fool proof, there will always be unexpected expenses or opportunities that you did not
see coming, but you will be in a much better position to make an educated and calculated decision about your next step. Here are my five favourite tips for budgeting: 1. Get your books up to date! How can you expect to budget when you don’t know what numbers you are working with? 2. Think ahead. For at least the next 12 months. Don’t stick your head in the sand; you need to be prepared for the future. 3. Set your goals, both large and small. You need to know where you are headed and what you want to achieve. 4. Ask for help. Talk to a professional. Ask your bookkeeper, consultant or accountant about how they can work with you on your journey. And finally; 5. Stay the course. It won’t be smooth sailing, but that’s business and that’s why you love it.

GET ADVICE BEFORE INVESTING IN PROPERTY
Property (or ‘bricks and mortar’) investing is exciting and interesting, but can also be extremely stressful if you don’t do your homework and implement a plan before jumping in feet first.
When considering investing in property, you have to ask yourself some important questions such as; whether you can really afford it and if you’ve done enough research on the property market. It’s vital to know how this type of investment would affect your tax situation and consult with an advisor who can help you decide which is the best way to go. Anyone entering the investment property market should obtain as much information as possible before signing the dotted line. You need to know the benefits as well as all risks involved in this type of investing. The key thing to consider is do you have enough of a buffer to cover you when times are tough, like when the property is untenanted for a period of time, or if and when interest rates rise. If you prepare yourself for the worst-case scenario, then the likelihood of the bank foreclosing on you should be decreased. The more prepared you are, the better off you’ll be. That’s why you need to have a network of professionals working for you in your favour with your best interests in mind. I always tell my clients that you need your accountant, mortgage broker/lender/bank manager,
A good team of professionals will help facilitate the whole process as well as educate you along the way.
90 DUO MAGAZINE AUGUST 2014 duomagazine.com.au
financial planner, insurance adviser, solicitor and real estate agent all working together toward that common goal of helping you achieve what you need to achieve in the most streamlined way. It sounds like a lot of people but it’s so important, and it helps even more if they know of each other. Your accountant will tell you the income tax consequences, how to treat the income and expenditure, what costs are deductible and non-deductible, what capital expenditure is and how that applies to you. But they also need to work in with your financial adviser, who will tell you if you can afford it or not and what kind of a buffer you need to cover you through any tough times. Then you have a mortgage broker, who has the ability to find you the best rate of interest and which lender will work the best for you, and the conveyancing solicitor is working hard in making it all happen at settlement. Bear in mind that you also need an insurance adviser to make sure you have protected yourself and your asset. A good team of professionals will help facilitate the whole process as well as educate you along the way.
Prior to the purchase you need to know if the set-up is most beneficial, as well as what it means to positive gear and negative gear the property and what that involves. You need to know if buying the property within a structure may be more beneficial for your needs and know the consequences of not getting it right (i.e. do you consider borrowing within a selfmanaged super fund). The key thing is to ask as many questions as possible beforehand. Accountants have the knowledge and expertise to answer a lot of these questions. If we can’t, we’ll point you towards other specialists who you may need to steer you in the right direction. After all, your success is our reward. The information provided is general advice only. TAKING THE LEAD IN AUTO ELECTRICAL LONG-TERM EMPLOYEES OF LESLIE’S AUTO ELECTRICAL HAVE STEPPED UP TO TAKE THE REINS AS JOINT OWNERS OF THE COMPANY ALONGSIDE FOUNDER GREG LESLIE.
Established in 1992, Leslie’s Auto Electrical has grown to become one of Australia’s largest and most respected auto electrical businesses. Over the decades, Leslie’s has amassed a loyal customer base and now three of its longest-serving employees have become joint owners. “We signed the papers in March,” says office manager Helena Thompson, who has been with Leslie’s for over a decade. “So now myself, parts manager Rick Allison and workshop manager Dean Archer own 50 per cent of Leslie’s alongside Greg. “We’re all passionate about looking after our customers and are in it for the longterm.” While Helena handles bookings and invoicing, Rick is responsible for front
counter parts sales and making sure the boys in the workshop have what they need, no matter how hard-to-find the part may be. Rick has also just become a fully qualified auto electrician and is now more hands-on in the workshop, which runs like a well-oiled machine thanks to workshop manager Dean Archer and his nine technicians. “We handle everything from passenger vehicles to trucks and earthmoving equipment,” Helena says. “We have a great team with a broad knowledge base to get any job done. contributing to townsville’s growth for
30 years
THIS YEAR MARKS 30 YEARS SINCE THE KINGSBERRY FAMILY ENTERED TOWNSVILLE’S REAL ESTATE INDUSTRY. WHEN IT COMES TO KNOWING TOWNSVILLE, few people know it better than Nev and Rosemary Kingsberry. Their memories of Townsville date back to before the days of television and before the first set of traffic lights. Rosemary was also one of the first students to attend the new Douglas Campus at James Cook University. You could say they have witnessed Townsville transform from a small regional town into the bustling city it is today, which includes surrounding suburbs such as the Northern Beaches. They have also helped contribute to this enormous growth through their real estate businesses, Harcourts Kingsberry Townsville and Kingsberry Strata. The Kingsberry family first entered into Townsville’s real estate industry 30 years ago when they bought Brownhill Kirk real estate agency, which became Kingsberry Brownhill Kirk – better known around Townsville as KBK. According to Nev Kingsberry, Licensee, Harcourts Kingsberry Townsville, over the years they experienced huge growth, which led to their businesses expanding, relocating and rebranding several times. “Thanks to continued growth we have relocated and had a few name changes over the years,” explains Nev. “We also built up a thriving strata management business, which my wife Rosemary runs, and we’ve just opened an office in the Northern Beaches.”
Recently, in what was a huge milestone for the Kingsberry family, their real estate business became part of the Harcourts franchise. This saw the business’ name change from Kingsberry Property to Harcourts Kingsberry Townsville. It also saw the family rebrand their strata management company from Kingsberry Body Corporate Management to Kingsberry Strata. “Our businesses might have new names and separate websites, but they are still the same old family-run businesses,” says Nev. “We still operate with integrity and value our people and clients. The only difference is we are now part of a wider network.” Harcourts Kingsberry Townsville offer a full suite of real estate services, including residential and commercial sales and leases, as well as property management. Kingsberry Strata specialises in strata management of residential and commercial spaces in Townsville. “We feel very blessed to do what we do,” says Rosemary, who heads up Kingsberry Strata. “We take great pride in servicing the needs of Townsville and the wider community with professionalism and care. And to be able to do it with our family is really something special.”

As well as Nev and Rosemary working in the family business, their son, Ben, is also a Principal. As Rosemary explains, before coming into the family business, Ben was a valuer by profession and worked in the south for some ten years. “Our son Ben coming into partnership has been a key milestone. He is young, driven and the catalyst for recent changes, and the future looks bright for our business.” While the Kingsberrys aren’t sure what the next 30 years hold, Nev and Rosemary are confident it will include great times with their family, and their businesses will continue to contribute to Townsville’s growth. “We look forward to the further development of each of our businesses,” says Rosemary. “And we shall continue to provide excellent service to the people of Townsville.” For more information about Harcourts Kingsberry Townsville visit www.townsville.harcourts.com.au or for more information about Kingsberry Strata, visit www.kingsberrystrata.com.au alternatively please call 07 4772 2022.

NEW LEASE OF LIFE FOR CBD
POPULAR NEW BAR AND RESTAURANT PRECINCT CITY LANE HAS LIVENED UP FLINDERS STREET AND THERE’S MORE TO COME WITH CITY ARCADE IN THE PIPELINE.
IT’S AN EXCITING TIME for the CBD with the Lancini Group investing heavily in breathing new life back into Flinders Street. The popularity of the Group’s City Lane precinct has shown no sign of letting up, with the lane regularly packed with excited diners gathered around cocktails and plates of meatballs, tacos, pizzas and salads. The once quiet section of Flinders Street has become a busy social hub with a buzz that’s reminiscent of metropolitan cities.
City Lane offers four unique restaurants with ongoing events planned throughout the year.
“City Lane offers four unique restaurants with ongoing events planned throughout the year,” Lancini Group marketing executive Karlie Armansin says. “Townsville has embraced City Lane as it’s an exciting development for the city. Everyone has been crying out for a place like this and we’re thrilled to offer such

an amazing area to gather, eat, drink and enjoy.” But wait, there’s more. Together with City Lane, the Lancini Group is poised to offer City Arcade, with the duo set to become a shopping and dining destination. Businesses that have already signed on to be a part of City Arcade include Anytime Fitness, Hello Handmade, the Refinery Beauty Bar and Sublime Hair Salon. “ We’re also looking for emerging designer/fashion stores, gift and homewares boutiques and specialty food retailers to join the space,” Karlie says. “The vision for City Arcade is to become a destination in conjunction with City Lane, where people come to eat and then browse our boutique shopping offerings.” City Arcade is due to be launched later this year and the public can stay up-todate with the development at the City
Lane website and Facebook site, which will be updated as new tenants come on board. Those interested in leasing retail space in City Arcade should contact Lancini Group’s Hanna Peard on 0422 484 624. The old Shaw’s Arcade building is being totally refurbished as it transforms into City Arcade, and the Lancini Group would love to see other developers jump on board with their ideas to re-invigorate the CBD.

“THE MORE I’VE ACHIEVED THE MORE FOCUSSED I’VE BECOME” I FIRST NOTICED AIDAN GUERRA when he was running around for Townsville Brothers Rugby Union Under 17’s and then saw him playing Rugby League for Ignatius Park College in a schoolboy match as a curtain raiser to a Cowboys game in 2005. The schoolboys’ game was televised the following Saturday morning and I advised a NRL Player Manager to have a look at the young Number 11 for Ignatius Park. I received a text message at half-time of that replay requesting I immediately organise a meeting with Aidan and his father, Rick. The Melbourne Storm became interested in the raw young player and signed him and Aidan moved to Brisbane to link with then Storm feeder club, Norths Devils with the likes of Israel Folau in the squad. It has been well documented that Aidan suffered a series of injury set-backs which led to four complex operations on a fractured left ankle…a frustrating time for such a young man and for the Storm who were waiting to cash in on the young players potential. In between going under the knife those four times Aidan still managed to make it into the Queensland Maroons Under 19 team and was named best forward, however unfortunately that period also led to him being cut by Melbourne Storm once Coach Craig Bellamy learned that Aidan had signed a two year deal with the Sydney Roosters. At just 21 years of age Aidan had been exposed to some of the deepest lows a professional athlete could experience. He had been literally ‘banned’ from rugby league as Coach Bellamy instructed that he was not to be selected for the Storm or any of their direct feeder clubs. Aidan made the decision that he would persevere and trained solo four times a week to keep himself conditioned to continue his NRL career... whenever he would be allowed to.
“That was a pretty dark period to go through, but I made myself realise that all players went through a period of injury and mine just happened to be at the start of my career, so I persevered on my own.” That early dose of adversity, followed by realisation was poignant in the maturing process of Aidan Guerra. “Things did get a bit tough, but as I said, I just kept thinking that not too many people make a living out of this sport without injuries and I just had to deal with it… going through that has really helped to mould me.” To be mixed further with the highs and lows he had experienced it is ironic that Aidan, being a Queenslander, had his first NRL contract in Victoria before moving to NSW with the Roosters and was then selected to play for NSW Residents against Queensland Residents in 2010. But it’s also now well known that his life and his career have turned completely around and he has achieved some of the greatest highs a professional athlete could experience.
that I just take things as they come and just go week to week making sure that I’m in the best condition possible to contribute to the Roosters. It’s good at the Roosters because they have such a great playing roster and I choose carefully who I want to train beside... some players really drive you on and help you get the best out of yourself, so I align myself with them.” Aidan tasted international standard rugby league as a member of the Italian World Cup team in 2013. Then came the biggest moment to date, Queensland State of Origin selection. “One of my greatest moments was getting the call from Big Mal.” And suddenly, the boy from Townsville who had never really planned on a sporting career was thrust into the midst of one of the most successful group of sportsmen to have aligned in the history of Australian sport. (I was speaking with Aidan just prior to him going into Camp for Origin 3). “In Origin Camp with the squad, at first I felt like a

I didn’t interrupt as he spoke about the Origin experience that few are good enough to savour. “In that first Origin game, they didn’t surprise us, but we definitely didn’t match that… we improved in our second game, but so did they.” I let him continue as he seemed

The Queensland passion and personal determination in his voice was more than obvious… he seemed to be using his own achievements for inspiration, as I began to try to remember where I had hung up my boots. “With Origin I‘ve developed a real admiration for the Queensland players who keep on backing up with first class performances following Origin games, and that makes me respect what Queensland has achieved even more.” There was no need to ask Aidan Guerra anything further about representing his State. So what does the future hold for Aidan beyond rugby league; any businesses in mind? “I have no idea what I will do beyond footy at the moment… I’m just trying to master my trade in rugby league first. That first contract really came out of nowhere and after all I’ve been through, I just want to succeed at everything I do as a professional sportsman. The more I achieve the more focused I’ve found I’ve become and then I want to achieve more.” After being personally exposed to the development of Aidan Guerra I would not doubt what the young man can achieve; leading his State and playing for his country are more than possibilities, they are merely next on the ‘unplanned’ list to be ticked off. However, following our formal ‘career’ conversation Aidan did reveal a couple of things that he would do once he wound up his sporting career; continue to take long walks on the beach, finish off a poem he started to write at school and grow a moustache better than his fathers… maybe he’s not quite as unplanned as he makes out.

A TASTE OF ARCHITECTURE IN THE TROPICS SOME OF NORTH QUEENSLAND’S MOST ACCOMPLISHED ARTISTS SHOWCASE THEIR IMPRESSION OF LOCAL ARCHITECTURE WORDS PAULA WILLIS

OVER 50 artwork pieces are on display as part of the ‘Art and Architecture in the Tropics’ collection with over 10 commissioned artists involved in the exhibition at Umbrella Studios. Over the past 15 years, local architect Terry O’Toole (Queensland Director of Troppo Architects and Owner of Northpoint Development Consultants) has commissioned various North Queensland artists to produce artwork based on the buildings he has designed throughout the region. Some of the talented local artists include Ron McBurnie, Carole Howlett, Robert Burton, Mel Williams, Dr. Anneke Silver and many others.
THE ARTWORKS ARE NOT LITERAL REPRESENTATIONS OF THE BUILDINGS. THEY ARE ARTISTIC INTERPRETATIONS.
Opposite page: Treasure House by Melanie (Mel) Williams. Acrylic on canvas, 2014 Top (left to right): Frat House and Sisters of Mercy by Ron McBurnie. Sepia pen and ink etchings on paper with a watercolour wash, 2012 Hidden Goddess (open and closed) wall icon by Dr Anneke Silver
Terry’s designs attempt to aesthetically reflect and communicate the function of a building through its form. He says the role of the commissioned artists was to re-interpret the designs and capture the clues that symbolise the purpose of the building which ‘most of the artist picked up on’. “The artworks are not literal representations of the buildings, they are artistic interpretations,” Terry says. These clever artists were selected based on their individual skills and divergent artistic approaches as Terry searched for ‘a mix of approaches and styles’. All of the artists featured in the collection draw on various brushwork techniques and mediums including watercolour, ink and pen etching, pastel on paper, acrylic and oil on canvas as well as ‘iconic’ gilt edged and glazed clay wall sculptures. The artwork embodies both modern and traditional styles with brilliantly coloured stylistic interpretations that incorporate a wide variety of abstract and surreal painting techniques often with humorous content. Architecture should be memorable to look at but more importantly be memorable to live or work in. As a profession architectural design is part Art and part Science. Or as Terry’s university colleagues used to say just :“a Bachelor of Colouring In!”. The aim of the exhibition is to combine tropical art and architecture to create a means of recording the ‘locale’ in which we all live. An idea that first originated when Terry was completing his final year thesis at Queensland University on “metaphor in architecture’’ and how architecture when done well can physically record the culture of the people who created it often long ago.
“What we tried to display in the exhibition and the reason we chose these buildings as artistic subjects, was to try and capture what we think tropical art and architecture are all about,” Terry says. “What is it like to live in the tropics? What should our buildings be like in response to the climate, the geography and the lifestyle of the people who occupy them?” Terry believes to create climatically responsive and environmentally sustainable architecture, we should not just adopt building styles transplanted from southern environments. An imported building style that often fails to consider cross ventilation and is often devoid of the deep overhangs that provide shelter from the sun, shed water during torrential downpours and shield our shelters from cyclonic wind damage during the north’s annual wet seasons. “I think it’s very important that as the world shrinks we don’t homogenise ‘life’ by making our buildings, clothing, art, food, and language all the same. Because it is the regional differences that make the world’s unique locations exciting places to travel to and visit. The risk of ‘globalisation’ is that it reduces cultural variety to the lowest common denominator of universal ‘sameness’ regardless of where in the world you are.” For Terry this exhibition’s primary purpose is; ‘to record artistically a select sampling of architecture and construction in North Queensland; whilst acknowledging those who commissioned them, those who built them, as well as explaining what function these buildings serve and the resultant form they take’. And to share the experience with the wider community. “Unfortunately, we are getting swamped with southern inspired building aesthetics designed for a more introverted lifestyle, climate and natural environment. And consequently you lose that regional quality that attracted people here in the first place.” “The goal of the exhibition was to try and capture within the artwork what it’s like to live and work in the tropics, a place whose people enjoy an extroverted lifestyle and never take themselves too seriously,” he says. The colourful and often humorous exhibition runs until August 10 at Umbrella Studios on Flinders Street. Visit www.umbrella.org.au for studio opening hours.

FOLLOWING an action-packed national tour crossing Arnhem Land, a Sydney Big Top season, then a smash-hit international tour across America to Montreal, Circus Oz rockets into Townsville with their brand spanking new show. But Wait…There’s More. Circus Oz shows are co-created from the inspiration, ideas and energy derived from the unique skills of each member of the extremely diverse ensemble that are then woven into the core concept of the show like layers of a collage. For 2014 an extensive casting process was undertaken across Australia’s vibrant circus community looking for recruits to add to the Circus Oz ensemble, structured around an equal number of men and women with various backgrounds, skills and bodies. Eight new performers have made their Circus Oz debut in 2014, joining four returning artists. “With so many new artists joining our ensemble, we are excited about the explosion of ideas and creativity that will emerge through the collaborative process,” explains Mike Finch, Circus Oz Artistic Director. Cooked up in their custom-built secret circus laboratory in the heart of Collingwood, Melbourne, and performed within a spectacular large-scale set inspired by an abandoned theatre in tatters, But Wait…There’s More will be a punchy, exciting and funny vaudeville-inspired show for humans of all ages. Audiences can expect an astonishing mix of stunt-jumping acrobatics, cutting-edge juggling, virtuosic unicycling, elegant trapeze flying, the exciting Rou Cyr rim, cheeky impersonations, ridiculous knockabout and multi-skilled human physical exuberance, all accompanied by an original, rocking eclectic live band. But Wait…There’s More uses circus to satirise the rising tide of information, speed, consumerism, visual pollution, television, the Internet and today’s manic fast-paced lifestyle. AN ILLUMINATING EXPERIENCE
LA LUNA YOUTH ARTS’ LUXLUMIN FESTIVAL AIMS TO ENCOURAGE MORE PROJECTION ART IN TOWNSVILLE IN LATE SEPTEMBER, La Luna Youth Arts will undertake an ambitious two-day festival of outdoor projection works, using various buildings in the Townsville CBD as their canvas. The event, entitled LUXLUMIN, is the first of its kind to be shown in Townsville, and will see a number of positive outcomes; the collaboration of a range of arts organisations and venues, the involvement of local and visiting artists, skills development in a growing artform for our region’s young and emerging artists, and the activation of our CBD through arts and cultural activity to name but a few. The potential for projection festivals to grow and become much-loved events of national significance is also immense. One need only look at the success of Vivid Sydney, or the Gertrude Street Projection Festival in Melbourne, for evidence of the broad popularity of projection works. Perhaps some of this popularity stems from its outdoor display – arresting passive audiences in a public venue with vibrant works of colour, light and substance. Launching Vivid Sydney in March of this year, New South Wales Premier Mike Baird provided some insight into the epic scale of the event, stating, “Vivid Sydney has become one of the city’s most anticipated events, drawing massive crowds from Sydney, interstate and overseas.” “Last year, the family friendly festival attracted an impressive 800,000 visitors, which in turn delivered a major $20 million boost to the NSW economy,” Mr Baird said.
While Vivid and the Gertrude Street Projection Festival have been growing over the course of a number of years to their current scale and significance, LUXLUMIN represents the important first steps for a similar event to be staged in north Queensland. Perc Tucker Regional Gallery supports the development of innovative events such as LUXLUMIN and the invaluable contribution of arts and cultural activity to the economic and social development of the region, and as such is curating a work for display in front of the Gallery as part of the festival. The interactive projection slated for display is by north Queensland born, Melbourne-based contemporary artist Yandell Walton. Walton is an accomplished video and projection installation artist exhibiting regularly in galleries and non-traditional public spaces both in Australia and internationally. Through her practice she explores ideas around impermanence and mortality, creating work that uses existing architectural and constructed space, found and made objects, and introduces the projected figure. The work being developed by Walton for LUXLUMIN is entitled Absent Presence, and the artist explains that it “references the traces we may leave as individuals throughout our environment, whether this is the imprint we have on the environment or the history that’s embedded into our lived spaces and architecture.”
“I am interested in what is absent and what is present with an aim that the viewer considers these ideas. Using interactive technology the work allows the viewer to be part of its creation by projecting their shadow, recording it and projecting it randomly throughout the night. The viewer therefore creates their own shadow and is surrounded by past people inhabiting the space. This work considers the temporal nature of life by representing the figures that have been and gone,” Walton said. LUXLUMIN is a new event in the Townsville arts calendar that will be enjoyed by the wider community, illuminating viewers as to the possibilities of projection art. Hopefully it also represents the first instance of an event that continues to build momentum and grow in the years to come.

OTTO’S SUPPORTS OUR LOCAL FARMERS… Fresh produce is at its best when sourced directly from local farmers. At Otto’s Fresh Food Market we will continually strive to source and stock the finest fruit and vegetables on offer in north Queensland. We have a great rapport with our farmers and our open lines of communication with them allows us to source the best, freshest produce direct from the farm. Where we can, we ensure our produce is allowed to naturally sun-ripen, it is picked and delivered straight to the store, often on the same day it is picked. By buying local where possible we are reducing “food miles” that inevitably come with products sourced from outside the region. Our ability to cut out unnecessary transport to southern markets, thus reducing the additional market agent fees gives Otto’s the ability to offer our customers the freshest produce at great low prices, whilst ensuring the farmers get a fair price too… something we are very passionate about! Our product range changes with the season and winter is the season to enjoy the very best of what North Queensland has to offer!

CAJUN CRAB BOIL To all the crab lovers out there, you haven’t really tasted crab until you’ve gone the whole shebang — the Cajun Crab Boil. ‘Crab boil’ refers to the spice mixture used to flavour the water in which the crabs or other shellfish are cooked. But instead of just boiling the crabs in the seasoned water, I prefer to take it up a notch and serve the highly addictive sauce with the crab in plastic bags. It’s a messy business — wear a bib and have plenty of paper napkins ready — but you’ll soon be a crab boil addict.
If you can find it, buy the Herbie’s brand of Bay Seasoning - a mixture of salt, paprika, celery seed, chilli, bay leaves, mace, mustard, allspice, ginger, pepper, cardamom and cinnamon. Otherwise, loos the the classic Old Bay Seasoning spice mix.
1 lemon, quartered 4 blue swimmer crabs, cleaned and halved, claws cracked 4 corn cobs, cut into 3 cm chunks 1 crusty baguette Crab boil seasoning 300 g butter 1 garlic bulb, cloves finely chopped 2 tablespoons Herbie’s Bay Seasoning 2 tablespoons Cajun seasoning 2 tablespoons cayenne pepper 2 tablespoons lemon pepper 2 tablespoons paprika 2 tablespoons hot sauce, such as Tapatio or Frank’s RedHot 2 tablespoons sugar SERVES 4 To make the crab boil seasoning, melt the butter in a large saucepan over a medium–low heat, add the garlic and sauté until soft and translucent, about 10 minutes. Add the bay seasoning, Cajun seasoning, cayenne pepper, lemon pepper and paprika, and stir to mix well. Add the hot sauce and sugar, stir until well combined. Reduce the heat to very low and let it simmer while you prepare the crabs. Half-fill a large saucepan with water and bring to the boil. Squeeze the lemon juice into the water before dropping the lemon quarters in and add 125 ml (4 fl oz/1⁄2 cup) of the crab boil seasoning. Drop the crabs and corn into the boiling water, put the lid on and boil for 7 minutes. Put the crabs and corn in a large bowl and add 250 ml (81⁄2 fl oz/1 cup) of the stock. You can keep the remaining stock if you are going to boil more seafood, if not just discard it. Pour the remaining crab boil seasoning over the crabs, then toss until everything is well coated in sauce. Divide the crabs and corn along with the sauce into four equal portions and place inside plastic bags. Serve immediately with the crusty baguette on the side to soak up the flavourful sauce.

SPICY OYSTER PO, BOY
A visit to New Orleans is not complete without having a Po, Boy (or several, let’s be real), be it oyster, shrimp or roast beef. Get yourself a sandwich roll with a good crust and a fluffy centre, fill it generously with deep-fried oysters and dress it with a spicy Cajun remoulade, and you will have your Southern American lunch sorted. 36 fresh oysters 250 ml (1 cup) milk 1 egg pinch of cayenne pepper salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste 200 g (3 cups) plain (all-purpose) flour 100 g fine semolina oil, for deep-frying 6 sandwich rolls with good crust handful of rocket (arugula) leaves
122 DUO MAGAZINE AUGUST 2014 duomagazine.com.au
To make the remoulade, crush the garlic to a paste with a pinch of salt, then add to a food processor together with the egg yolks and vinegar, blend to combine. While the processor is running, add the oil in small amounts, making sure the oil is properly blended in and amalgamated before each addition. As the mixture starts to thicken, add the oil slowly in a steady stream. By the time all the oil is added, the mayonnaise should be thick and glossy, holding its shape. Stir in the capers, cornichons, paprika and cayenne pepper. Season with the lemon juice, Sriracha sauce and salt to taste. You will need some of the remoulade for the coleslaw and the remainder for serving. To make the coleslaw, toss the cabbages and remoulade together, then refrigerate for at least 1 hour before serving. Meanwhile, soak the oysters in the milk in a bowl for 15 minutes. Drain the milk from the oysters into another bowl and add the egg and cayenne pepper. Season with salt and pepper then beat to combine. Put the flour and a pinch of salt in one bowl, and the semolina to another. Use a deep-fryer if you have one. If not, fill a large, deep saucepan with the oil to about a third full. Bring the oil temperature up to 190ºC (375°F) over a medium–high heat. In batches, dip the oysters in flour, then the egg mixture and lastly the semolina and coat well. Drop the oysters carefully into the hot oil and fry for 3 minutes, or until they begin to float to the surface. Remove, drain on paper towel and lightly season with salt. To serve, cut the bread rolls in half and fill with rocket leaves and coleslaw, top each one with six oysters then spoon the remoulade sauce on top.

AKA: Sooty, Ticket Seller, Apex Life Member, Coach. Most treasured item: The official 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games Book. Dad gave it to me and I read it 100 times as a kid. You in three words: Finds humour easily. Most memorable moment: Aside from the birth of my 3 children, it would have to be receiving my OAM from our then Governor Quentin Bryce; my whole tribe was there, a very solemn but happy occasion indeed. What you love about where you live: Townsville has come such a long way in 30 years and so many good locals have made that happen. Despite all the change it’s still a very friendly place. You always meant to: Sell a used car for Picko’s or Carmichael’s; I once sold an old lady a toaster when I was only looking at Retravision one day! Best dish: Rack of Lamb in Jill’s special garlic marinate. You wish… Pat Richards had dropped Benji bloody Marshall’s flick pass in the 2005 grand final; my heart sank,my daughter cried. Your biggest inspiration: Has to be my Aunt Veronica who was a Holy Spirit nun (Sister Carmel Ann); she spent her life in India setting up and running hospitals for poor and lower caste people. A truly remarkable woman. I rate Fred Hollows and Sir George Kneipp up there as well. You’d change this about yourself: To be more tolerant of those not so enthusiastic about the things I get stuck into. Ideal dinner guests: HRH The Queen…. and the Three Stooges. Your philosophy: Always give someone a second chance. Look for the good in people. As a child, what did you think you’d be doing at this age: Driving big trucks like me Dad! Parting words: I’ve been in clubs, boards and charities most of my life so I reckon young people should give volunteering a go; it brings out the best in you and provides a good source of new mates. Fellowship through service—simple.

AKA: Chair, Townsville Learning Communities Leadership Group Most treasured item: An iPad Air which allows me to keep up with news and events, follow my interests, and keep in touch with colleagues, family, and friends. You in three words: Passionate, committed, inquisitive. Why you get out of bed: Always excited by a new day. Who I might meet. What I might learn. Living in Townsville gives you the opportunity to be involved in many endeavours. Most memorable moment: Graduating from James Cook University. Though I went on to study in Melbourne and Brisbane, James Cook University gave me my start in my career. What you love about where you live: Townsville Shines. I grew up in Townsville, but I have worked in Sydney, Melbourne, and Canberra during my career. Each city had their unique charm, but I enjoy Townsville’s warm, sunny weather. You always meant to: Travel to Africa. Where are you from: Though I was born in Brisbane, I’ve always regarded Townsville as my home town. Your biggest inspiration: My parents. They both had a strong interest in community, outgoing personalities, and a sense of humour. You’d change this about yourself: A sometimes impetuous nature. Ideal dinner guests: Judi Dench, Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Dalai Lama, Carole King Your must-have gadget: Smartphone to keep in touch with family and friends. The last book you read: The E-Myth Revisited by Michael Gerber. He argues that successful business leaders work ‘on’ the business, not just ‘in’ the business. I think this is an essential strategy for any endeavour. Your philosophy: Mahatma Gandhi said “Be the change that you wish to see in the world.” Parting words: Make the most of every opportunity that comes your way, and always be willing to help others to pursue their dreams.
AKA: Pete, Peters, Awesome! Most treasured item: My hairdryer, which cost about forty bucks 14 years ago. I’ve been using it with a UK to Australian adaptor since 2007 and it’s never missed a beat, I’ve probably cursed it now. You in three words: Outgoing, vertically challenged and tenacious (or noisy, short and bossy depending on which way you look at it). Most memorable moment: It hasn’t happened yet, but when I become an Australian Citizen (in the near future) I’m sure that will be a moment I’ll never forget. What you love about where you live: I live in Alligator Creek, the best suburb in Townsville. It’s a great community, has beautiful mountains and is full of native animals. You always meant to: Make a million. I guess there’s still time. You drive a: I drive a Toyota Corolla and I have an old FJ60 Landcruiser for bush-bashing. Where are you from: A little sea-side town in Cornwall, UK called Hayle. It’s famous for Cornish Pasties. Best dish: Every good Cornish woman should be able to make a decent Pasty but my pastry is terrible so my best dish would have to be my roast potatoes. Your biggest inspiration: My Nan. She was an awesome woman, 5ft of fighting fury, who wielded a wooden spoon as a punishment but to our whole families knowledge never had to use it. You’d change this about yourself: I’d be taller which would make me thinner, both taller and thinner would make me happy. Your philosophy: In Vino Veritas (In wine there is the truth). As a child, what did you think you’d be doing at this age: I thought I would be a Pirate. I had a plan, using HMB Endeavour (Captain Cooks Replica Ship) to steal all the duty free from the ferries operating in the English Channel. Shame that didn’t come off, I’m sure it would have been great fun.
AKA: Keeper of Secrets. Most treasured item: My songs which you can find at soniabuckley.bandcamp You in three words: Just add guitar. Why you get out of bed: Because if I stayed in bed I would get up to far too much mischief! Most memorable moment: Motherhood What you love about where you live: The Freedom You always meant to: Cross the Great Wall of China on the back of a donkey or possibly wing walk on the Red Baron! You drive a: I ride a sports performance motorcycle. Where are you from: The High Country in Victoria. Best dish: Fresh caught Smoked Mountain Trout laying on a bed of home grown salad, sided with char grilled root vegetables and a glass of 2008 Captain’s Pinot Noir from Bruny Island Premium Wines. You wish… I had an inexhaustible amount of wishes (which I think is true for me anyway) but really we don’t need wishes to change our lives and the world, we can do that with our actions. Your biggest mentor/inspiration: My father. Notorious crop dusting pilot, Councillor and mischief maker. Ben Buckley… what a truly brilliant and wonderful man. My biggest inspiration is my son Tommy and my daughter Jazz. Your philosophy: To live with an open heart; to forgive when needed; to stand up when it counts; to fight if I have to; to love; to heal; to dance; to create and most of all; to laugh and live my life with truth, authenticity, integrity and honour is the mainstay. To make the best effort to achieve and have a most wonderful life shared with all those whom come across my path. As a child, what did you think you’d be doing at this age: Singing, travelling the World and be married to a rich man. Two out of three ain’t bad.. still working on the third! Parting words: We can visit our past and plan for our future but the moment is now. What are you going to do with it?

JUDY MISCHEWSKI HAS ALWAYS HAD A PASSION FOR ANTIQUE PIECES AND HAS A GREAT LOVE FOR HELPING PEOPLE FIND THEIR OWN SPECIAL VINTAGE PIECES. WORDS LEILANI WATERS PHOTOGRAPHY SKYE BREE
FROM A YOUNG AGE, Judy Mischewski had two dreams. One, was to live in an old church, and the other was to be surrounded by antiques. Now Judy, a mother to seven and grandmother to five, and owner of Déjà vu Antiques on Flinders Street West, is living with her husband and renovating their old church in Giru. “It’s a work in progress. I love doing up the old church and finding pieces for it. Our home is everything about who we are – when I walk into my home I still take a breath and I just love it.” This kind of love is what Judy’s personality is all about. Even in her store she feels it’s important to create a certain atmosphere. “Maude the Cairn Terrier is an integral part of our staff, greeting customers and keeping children amused.”
“MY SHOP IS A REFLECTION OF PIECES THAT BRING ME JOY. I LOVE THE AMBIENCE I‘VE CREATED IN THIS SPACE.” 130 DUO MAGAZINE AUGUST 2014 duomagazine.com.au
“My shop is a reflection of pieces that bring me joy. I love the ambience I’ve created in this space. I love the pieces I sell and I think because I’m passionate about the pieces, it’s easy for me to sell them.” Judy recalls as a ten year old sneaking into her Aunt’s Grand Victorian Dining Room in Guyra, New South Wales, and
admiring the old pieces of furniture. “It was a real Victorian room filled with authentic cedar and mahogany sideboards, tables and chairs. Big ornate picture frames hung on the walls. It’s like the pieces of furniture would call out to me to touch and feel them, and it’s been like that all throughout my life.” When Judy was 18 she worked in the Newcastle Antique Centre, where she would also buy pieces for the lady who owned the centre. “I just wanted to be surrounded by antiques. It wasn’t about the money, I worked there for free, I actually had another job.” “Antiques shouldn’t belong to just one person. We’re just like a custodian of a piece, that’s how I see it. A piece has come to live with me and then it goes to live with someone else – that’s what antiques are about. About belonging to all different people in their journey.” To discover more about Déjà vu Antiques visit the Facebook page, at www.facebook.com/DejaVuAntiques better still, call in to the shop.
