major international venture for Loloma Jewellers, whose buying team of 4 attended the world’s biggest jewellery fair in Hong Kong. It became clear at the fair that pearls are set to become the hottest trend in jewellery with their popularity soaring on international catwalks and celebrity red carpets. Loloma Jewellers has prepared for the growing demand by ordering in Townsville’s largest range of pearls heading into the Christmas season. While a majority of pearls were sourced from Japan, customers can also choose from an extensive range of Australian South Sea Pearls in white, yellow, grey and black as well as cultured and fresh water options. Other new jewelllery items on show combined black and white diamonds and coloured gem stones. By attending and buying direct from the Hong Kong Fair, many of the pearls and gem stones have hit the shelves at Loloma Jewellers well

twenty-one-year-old Milena Barbagallo studies education at James Cook university and aspires to one day teach italian and music in high schools. By night she can be found pouring beers at Brothers leagues Club, where she was awarded employee of the year and recently travelled to Fiji as a prize for her dedication. Highlights of the trip included jet-skiing and snorkelling around the Mamanuca islands, and visiting the local children at their schools. Milena aims to complete her degree by the end of 2011 and wants to have some great travel adventures around australia and europe.

view over 124 portraits that celebrate the wonderful artists and identities in our community and share their stories. artist irene rae’s portrait of granddaughter tegan (pictured) was a labour of love. irene completed a Bachelor of visual arts at JCu in 1998 and has since exhibited in group shows in pastels and in printmaking. “nanny lives over the road from us and would call me over for half an hour a day to sit against the fence while she worked on the portrait,” said 15-year-old tegan alloway, who goes to ryan Catholic College. “she showed me the painting as it developed and i got to give my feedback. it was pretty exciting to see it displayed on the opening night of the exhibition – with everyone dressed up and staring at my portrait.” tegan feels very honoured that her grandma chose her to sit for the artwork. “You often see photos of yourself but it’s not every day you get painted,” she said. artWorK: irene rae, tegan, 2010 www.townsville.qld.gov.au

dAvId CAMPBELL – BROAdWAy & BEyONd TOuR TOWNSVILLE CIVIC THEATRE Broadway & Beyond will give audiences a thrilling ride through David Campbell’s unique career – including songs from the swing sessions 1 & 2, good lovin, on Broadway and more. “the on Broadway doco was great fun to make and will hopefully be out on sale next year,” David said. “the highlights for me were meeting the composers of songs and getting their advice. stephen schwartz (who wrote Wicked) rehearsed and rehearsed with me to make sure that i got his song right. it was invaluable! i have a DvD coming out at Christmas called David Campbell: the Broadway tour, live in australia – so you can see me put into practice what i learnt.” these days a typical week for David involves hitting the gym regularly. “i was determined not to be a fat dad,” he said. “i wanted to be the best i could be for my son, so i am at the gym five times a week. i go at 7am, come back, play with leo, put in a few hours at the office (of the production company that he runs with his wife, lisa) then take leo for a walk or to meet some friends. then dinner and bed by 8pm if i can. My rock-and-roll days are far behind me! so how is fatherhood treating David? “i love it. leo is such a great kid,” he said. “He’s placid, happy and so much fun. He doesn’t cry much – in fact, i think that i cry more than he does. i am very lucky that i tend to work when he is asleep, so we get to play a lot during the day. He won’t be in townsville unfortunately – but i look forward to taking him to Magnetic island when he is a bit older!” and what about Jimmy’s grandad skills? “He is awesome! Family is very important to him and we try to spend as much time together as our careers will allow. We’ve recently bought an apartment next to my sister, Mahalia. so leo will grow up beside his cousin ruby and Jimmy and Jane will be able to see both grandkids in one go!” David’s on Broadway album will be released in the states this month and he has upcoming shows in new York, los angeles and san Francisco. “then i have my last year as artistic Director of the adelaide Cabaret Festival next year and then hopefully i may get to tread the boards in an actual musical… i feel it’s time.” www.townsville.qld.gov.au

Pantyhose and pearls were a must, bare knees and knuckles were a no-no, and Marg’s white linen coat with large patch pockets, complete with matching gloves, shoes, handbag and frothy pink tulle hat, ticked all of the Flemington fashion judges’ boxes. “When i was first asked to enter the contest i was actually ineligible,” says Marg with a giggle. “Back then the rule was that your outfit must be store-bought and cost less than 30 pound. i wore a dress that was home made!” Just beginning a modelling career, which would span the next 12 years, Marg couldn’t really afford an expensive outfit. However, excited by the hype of the event, she borrowed a hat, borrowed the money for an 18

outfit, went back to the races, won Final Day and then Fashions on the Field. “i never dreamed i would actually win,” exclaims Marg. “and my parents couldn’t believe it when i came home with a brand new, and very stylish, Ford Falcon Futura.” Fashions on the Field captured the imagination of the public and dominated the papers. But Marg says that despite all the snapshots taken by photographers it’s her mother’s photograph, taken on a brownie-box camera, that has stood the test of time. the photo, along with Marg’s race day hat can be found at the australian racing Museum – where all great racing moments are immortalised.

“it wouldn’t surprise me if when i die they stuff me and stand me right next to Phar lap,” jokes Marg. For now Marg is enjoying a more active participation in the racing realm. over the years she has attended the Melbourne Cup as a guest of honour and in 2004 joined the Fashions on the Field judging panel. “i just don’t know how they do it!” exclaims Marg. “all of the entrants are so stunning and there’s such a variation of fashion – it’s so hard to pick a favourite. it’s unbelievable that almost 50 years ago somebody created an event to get women to go to the races and now Fashions on the Field has evolved in to a major part of australian racing culture, and women and

men flock from all over to enter. itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s absolutely wonderful.â&#x20AC;? recently Marg participated in Melbourne Cup 150th celebrations commemorated with a major photographic exhibition. HAnnAH HAS A HeArT OF GOLd incuraBle seasickness, searing heat anD increDiBly long Working Days are not enough to keep hannah peart aWay FroM Where she’s neeDeD the Most.

the townsville-based Youth With a Mission (YWaM) Medical ship recently returned to north Queensland shores after being based in Papua new guinea for two months, where Hannah Peart and her crew of volunteers regularly make the journey to lend a professional hand to local healthcare workers. the 29 year old medical coordinator just completed her sixth trip aboard the Pacific link to the gulf Province of Png, and with six monthly rotations to the region on the cards for the next decade or so, it seems there will be no requirement shortage for her services in the near future. “the whole experience is unbelievably amazing,” Hannah described. “i help oversee outreaches…find the locations… find volunteers and find our supplies. i’ve also been involved in all the scouting advance work which has been great fun.” new zealand born Hannah has lived in townsville for seven years, embracing a career in nursing. she said about 15 of the recently returned volunteers were also from townsville, with other crew from various parts of australia and overseas. Finding willing and able crew to volunteer is apparently never a problem for Hannah, who actually had to turn people away from the last run. “i had to say no more! Can you come and join us in 2011?” she laughed. “i usually find that people are very willing, particularly in the medical field. they already have a real desire to help people, hence the reason they got in their field.” specialists such as ophthalmologists, dentists and optometrists are generally staples on board the Pacific link working alongside the other volunteers who aren’t necessarily experienced in a certain field, but are just as willing to get their hands dirty.

Hannah told the story of a young girl who took up the experience on the most recent expedition to help out her father, who happened to be the ship’s dentist. “she spent her school holidays pulling out teeth in Png in the absolute heat,” Hannah explained. “she wasn’t anywhere close to air-con where she was either, but she was an absolute star!” Despite Hannah’s energetic demeanour and absolute adoration for the people and the culture of the place she now visits on a recurrent basis, it’s not always smooth sailing for her. “i get very seasick and living on a ship makes life very difficult,” Hannah revealed jovially. “i’ve tried everything! i even overdosed myself on medication hoping it would work but it just doesn’t. i seem to be immune to it!” Hannah and her crew have won the hearts of the Png locals as they continue to give a leg up to a healthcare system that is in complete disarray, in a region that is lacking in the most basic of education; but the admiration is certainly not unrequited. “it’s an absolute privilege working alongside the local healthcare workers,” Hannah said. “everyday they see a child come in with malaria, everyday they see another young mum struggle through labour; so anytime we can come and just lift spirits for a while by educating them or helping them get supplies, is just unbelievably rewarding. “no matter how much i give, i always feel like i receive so much more. it sounds corny but it’s true; you just see this one smile on somebody, or one mum to shake your hand in gratitude and it just makes everything worthwhile.”

FrOM My deSk it’s hard sometimes to know where to draw the line. i’ve changed occupations and i have to be a bit wary. suddenly i have to care about how i am perceived. a mate of mine says that perception is neither right nor wrong, it just is. i don’t want to be boring as i know both my readers like to hear from me. But i am now in a position where i have to be careful that i don’t overstep the mark and lose this job before i get done what i want to achieve. For example, i would turn up at an event as auctioneer and wonder if there was any money in the room. i would look for people i knew so that i would have a target for my humour. i would know about the charity we were supporting – if i did not care, i wouldn’t be there. the one thing you do not really notice is that the work has been done. i was involved in a rugby club in the ’80s and i know that a lot of work is done by a few. But in that case i also received a lot. i did it because i loved the club and the people in it. But when you have the Cystic Fibrosis association or the Palliative Care Centre, you can often wonder why they are doing it. the short answer is that they’re doing it because if they didn’t, it would not get done. During the campaign we spoke at a forum for people with disabilities. in the audience was a lady who had used her first afternoon off in 14 months to attend that forum. When she spoke she asked when any government would be able to pay her for the work she does. there were a number of answers that would have been safe and non-controversial and i probably should have gone down that path. But i couldn’t help it. i told her that she could never be paid what she was worth to both society and her family because what she did was not quantifiable. sure, government can tinker at the edges but at the end of the day, all governments know that she would do it for nothing if she had no choice. she just would. the nDis (national Disability insurance scheme) is currently before the Productivity Commission. We await its results as this has the potential to ease the pain for a lot of carers and sufferers alike. one gentlemen said to me that he didn’t want to get rich from the scheme, he just wanted to have some quality of life for himself and his mum – and to feel good about himself. there are basic tenets by which we should all be able to live and i reckon he just about summed it up.

WHEN DID YOU KNOW YOU’D MADE IT?

YOUR MUM ONCE OWNED A BOUTIQUE AT THE SYDNEY HILTON. DID YOU CONSCIOUSLY FOLLOW IN HER FASHIONABLE FOOTSTEPS? My mother was not a designer, but she was a great businesswoman and her ability to run a business and to work in an industry she loved definitely inspired me. Fashion is not just about design – a lot of my job involves organising the production of our ranges. Now that we are producing thousands of garments for boutiques all over the world, I find that all the business skills I learnt from my mother are invaluable.

WHICH CELEBS INSPIRE YOU? For [Wish’s] winter campaign, Rising Star, we worked with Dakota Johnson and, for me, that was a dream come true. Dakota is Hollywood royalty. Her parents are Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith and her grandmother is Tippi Hedren [all actors]... For the new summer campaign, Ride Free, we worked with celebrity and fashionista Katrina Bowden. Katrina is only 21, and yet, she has already starred in four seasons of the multi-award winning, hit series 30 Rock... As a regular at New York fashion week, she has a real sense of her own style.

ANY SETBACKS ALONG THE WAY? We’ve been really lucky in that we have never really had any steps backward. But, that is because we have been very careful to grow at a manageable rate. We are now in our 11th year. So, people see the success story, but maybe don’t know about the years of very careful growth and hard work... While we are

that we have been working with great people for a number of years. People who work with us always comment on how down-to-earth and friendly our shoots are. You can get fantastic results and still have a nice time!

Good question! Does anyone ever think they’ve made it? There have been some nice milestones — being stocked in Myer and David Jones, launching in the US two years ago, seeing Wish dresses on the stars of American Idol and having Paula Abdul compliment them on Idol! For me [though], it’s more about knowing that we run a great company full of talented people.

WHY DOES ASIA INSPIRE YOU?

I love the name, Wish! For me, great fashion is all about realising your dreams... Truese sounds elegant and European. It’s a word we created to capture the feel of the brand. Truese gowns are created with the red carpet in mind. I use the most beautiful fabrics and really go to town, with detailed beading and beautiful embellishments. Truese just sounds luxurious and gorgeous! Azuki is literally the name of a crazy, little Japanese bean! Azuki is my young, crazy brand. The styles are a little bit left-of-centre...

I love to travel and I’m incredibly lucky that I get to do so much of it... In an ideal world though, I would have the flexibility to travel to more off-the-beaten-track locations - to destinations other than fashion capitals! I’d love to have the time to go to more snow villages, to snowboard all day and then enjoy the snow resort at night.

For me, more than anything, my fashion is about colour and prints. When I am in Asia, the remarkable intensity of the shades you see all around you sets my mind alight. The entire precinct was buzzing with excited energy as fashionistas, models, journalists, photographers, makeup artists, stylists and celebrities like Naomi Campbell, Kristen Stewart, Kate Hudson and Sarah Jessica Parker shimmied through the fashion-flavoured menu. Street style surrounding the venue was just as important as the looks presented on the runway, and fortunately rain stayed away making it easier for guests not to slip on their stilettos across the old London cobblestoned streets around the main exhibition. The same can’t be said for a couple of models, especially one renowned catwalk spill at the Burberry show (video footage now in cyberspace)! A marquee on the Somerset House Terrace provided delicious cuisine, all-important champagne and DJs – a place of respite to weary guests with sore feet waiting eagerly for the next show. If in need of a swift pamper session during show breaks, staff at the Toni & Guy Blow-Out Bar and M.A.C Lounge were on-hand to assist, while divulging insider tips on what’s hot in hair and makeup in the coming seasons. In between bubbly, styling and catwalk action in the electric BFC Show Space, the hoards of special guests could browse the four floors of Designer Exhibitions showcasing almost 200 ready-to-wear, couture, millinery, and accessory artists, including 60 up-andcoming designers. Some names to watch from this year’s LFW Exhibition that are also making waves in Australia include Evil Twin, Staple, Bolongaro Trevor, Myla luxury lingerie and Wolford. Several high-tech lounge areas offered laptops and fast internet facilities because this year the online component of LFW was strong, with not only many a fashion editor blogging their thoughts as the shows went live, but Twitter buzz was completely crazy with opinions, event options, details from inside exclusive parties, and crucial ‘instant trend’ updates. Catwalk shows streamed live from the London Fashion Week website, and images were added immediately. Of course, everyone was really at LFW for these famous fashion shows. The most popular trends emerging for next season include short flouncy dresses, ‘relaxed city chic’ styles (eg. cropped box shirts, three-quarter length Capri pants/ trousers with wedges and large ‘messenger’ handbags), more feminine designs, and bright colour splashed against neutral palettes. Animal prints and sparkles are still alive and well, although not necessarily paired together! Designer highlights of the season included shows from Burberry, Christopher Kane, House of Holland, Jonathan Saunders, Mulberry, Richard Nicoll, PPQ, Betty Jackson, Vivienne Westwood Red Label, Kinder Aggugini, Jaeger London, Paul Smith, Pringle of Scotland, the exciting ‘NewGen’ series of hot new fashion talent, and of course Australia’s own Sass & Bide (sassandbide.com). Sarah-Jane Clarke and Heidi Middleton of the popular Australian label say that “perfectly shaped chaos” is what is inspiring them for the upcoming season, and they enjoy time spent in London (when away from their Sydney home base) because “the faded grandeur of times past” influences their creative thinking. one hearing aiD or tWo? The unaided ear and audiTory sysTem becomes lazy.

At Clarity Hearing Solutions I often see patients who have been given incorrect or outdated advice as to whether they should be fitted with one hearing aid or two. The answer is quite simple, if you have a hearing loss in both ears then a hearing aid is required in each ear. After all, the ears are just like the eyes and, unless you are Colonel Klink from Hogan’s Heroes, if you have two impaired eyes then you now wear a pair of glasses, not a monocal. Current research strongly supports the advantages of balanced binaural hearing aid fitting for the following reasons and more. Firstly a part of our localisation abilities relies on the volume differences between the two ears. So a sound coming from one side should be louder in the ear on that side than the other ear. The brain analyses this volume difference and knows that the sound comes from the side where the sound is the loudest. If only one hearing aid is worn then the brain is now unable to use this volume difference as the ear with the hearing aid in it will always appear to be louder than the untreated ear and localisation will always be towards that side.

Secondly there is a condition called an auditory deprivation effect. This effect occurs when you fit only one hearing aid to a hearing loss in both ears. Because the ear with the hearing aid is now doing the majority of the hearing and auditory processing, the hearing in the ear that is left unaided can decline at a much faster rate as the auditory system is not being stimulated to the same degree as the aided ear. In other words, the unaided ear and auditory system becomes lazy. Another reason for fitting both ears is an effect called binaural advantage. Next time you try and talk in a crowded room, or even watch the TV with some background noise present, block one of your ears and notice how much harder it is to hear the conversation. This is an auditory processing effect, which occurs within the brain, that allows us to pick up speech sounds in the presence of noise much more effectively. The brain does this by talking to and finetuning both ears to attenuate the speech sounds more precisely. It requires information from both ears to be able to do this adequately.

Finally many features in hearing aids that help you follow speech in noisy environments are designed to work together with a second hearing aid. For example, a directional microphone. When several people start talking at once most hearing aids change their directionality from picking up sounds all around to just picking up sounds in front. When only one hearing aid is worn then you don’t pick up sounds on the unaided side. Also, because the directional beam of the aided ear becomes narrower, it only picks up sounds on angles from 0 to 90 degrees so you lose information from the unaided side altogether.

For a number of years now it has been apparent that oral health impacts on a person’s general health and quality of life. The experience of toothache pain, enduring dental abscesses, problems chewing and eating and embarrassment from discoloured, missing, damaged, loose or poorly shaped teeth adversely affects a person’s self-esteem, wellbeing and daily life. As a specialist once said to me about his patient’s teeth, “This person has been suffering poor dental aesthetics her entire life”. From a medical standpoint, poor oral health is linked to malnutrition due to poor eating habits (eg poor chewing and compromised nutritional intake), as well as general medical issues such as heart disease and infections that can compromise the airway. From a dental standpoint, poor oral health is associated with damage to and loss of tooth structure, loss of bone through gum disease and other infections and degeneration of the jaw joint. Another significant problem is the social aspect of poor dental health and aesthetics. People who suffer bad breath and those who aren’t happy with the appearance of their

teeth and gums often become more reclusive, avoiding public situations. They don’t smile as much, or hide their smile, won’t laugh, have a poor outlook on themselves and consequently care less about their general appearance and tend to engage members of the opposite sex less. We are fortunate to live in a revolutionary time in dentistry. There are many treatment options available for restoring the teeth and mouth to health. If supportive shoes are meant to help your feet, and going barefoot is bad for you, why is it that slipping your shoes off under the desk at work feels so good? Now obviously if you’re a size 8 squeezing into a size 6 that may be the problem, but often it’s not the shoe but rather what is going on inside your foot that is the issue. A common condition that affects the forefoot is called Morton’s Neuroma, which involves squeezing of the nerve in the area in between the metatarsal bones of the feet. This can lead to a burning, shooting or numb pain from the ball of the foot to the toes. It is most commonly found between the 3rd and 4th metatarsal bones. The pain is often variable but relieved by removing shoes and increases with time in shoes. People with a mobile foot type are more prone to this condition as they have more motion available between these small bones in the feet. Wearing wide-fitting shoes assists by decreasing the pressure between these bones. Particular care should also be taken to avoid pointy-toed shoes that encourage the toes to be squeezed together.

A neuroma occurs when a mass develops on a nerve due to irritation or constant squeezing. An ultrasound can confirm the diagnosis by quantifying the mass. As it worsens, swelling tends to occur in the soft tissue around the forefoot and, in bad cases, a mass can be felt at the top of the forefoot between the metatarsal bones. Pain is often produced with lateral pressure or squeezing of the forefoot and so it’s usually worse with tight shoes. Often when squeezing the forefoot, a click, called a ‘Mulder’s Click’, can be heard. The click is a result of the mass on the nerve clicking above or below the bones adjacent. This usually provides relief because pain is experienced while the mass is ‘stuck’ between the bones. The only way to actually get rid of the neuroma or mass is to have it surgically removed but not everyone needs surgery with most people responding well to insoles or padding designed to control the motion between the metatarsals and increase the space between these bones. This will often give people relief so that the pain or symptoms associated with the neuroma subside and the need to undergo surgery is prevented.

Sick of sore feet?

Recent research shows that insoles and conservative (non-surgical) treatment will relieve symptoms in about 70% of cases. If surgery is required it usually involves resection and cautery of the affected nerve. While surgery is usually effective it is not always the first preference for patients. Remember, shoes should be comfortable and give our feet relief. So, if you are finding that your shoes are killing you, then maybe it’s your feet and not the shoes that are the problem. Getting them checked out by a podiatrist may even prevent the need to have surgery.

prevention is Cheap, negleCt is eXpensive. Recently I’ve seen more and more cases of this type. Most often the patient is male, in their 50’s and has never really taken much notice of their teeth. Until that is, they start to give trouble. One poor soul came in one day to say that he had been to another dentist who had wanted to do a comprehensive treatment plan. “I can’t be bothered with all that,” he said disdainfully. “I just need a couple of cheap fix-ups.” I agreed to have a look and give him a second opinion. “You will fix ‘em up, won’t you doc?” he said hopefully, as we opened the can of worms that was his mouth. Unfortunately the die was cast. It was far too late and at least 12 teeth needed to be extracted as a matter of urgency and saving the rest would be expensive, slow and uncomfortable. Verdict: You should have done something about this years ago. Another case gives us a bit more hope. With a much more positive and realistic attitude, our patient acknowledged the problem and was willing to be guided by me to find their best solution. The cause was again years of neglect

and expedient “rip it out” type dentistry, and the answer is once again complicated, time consuming and expensive. It always is a shame and a difficult thing to face when someone with few useful teeth has to lose a few more, but sometimes it can’t be helped. In this case we have to remove four teeth, repair 15 and then place some dental implants and construct some fixed and removable bridgework. This seems like a lot of work, but if you have no teeth to chew with, great big gaps at the front and a hillbilly-smile what else are you going to do? The public has an idea that dentists love drilling holes in teeth. After all, that’s how we get paid isn’t it? Well that’s true but we honestly would rather not. What we really want to see is nice, healthy teeth all fitting together properly and a lovely shape and colour, beautiful pink gums, clean fresh breath and, most importantly, a smile from a happy, healthy patient. How can this be achieved I hear you say; well do yourself a favour and get to the dentist every six months for a check-up and see the dental hygienist at the recommended interval – don’t let it slip!

sPicy lebanese-sTyle Peas WiTh minced lamb SERVES 6â&#x20AC;&#x201C;8 100ml olive oil 3 onions, finely chopped 5 cloves garlic, finely chopped 450g lean lamb mince sea salt and freshly ground black pepper 3 teaspoons mixed spice 2 teaspoons dried chilli flakes 1 tablespoon dried mint 400g can chopped tomatoes 4 tablespoons tomato paste (puree) 800ml water 900g frozen peas plain yoghurt, to serve (optional) lemon juice, to serve (optional) Â˝ bunch mint, leaves picked

This dish allows the zesty, tomato-flavoured peas to shine. It is just as delicious reheated the next day. Heat the olive oil in a saucepan over medium heat and cook the onion and garlic for 5 minutes. Add the lamb and cook, stirring frequently, until browned. Stir in the spices, mint, tomato and salt to taste and cook for about 3 minutes. Add the tomato paste, water and peas and cook, partly covered, for 20 minutes. To serve, dollop the yoghurt over the lamb mixture, add a little lemon juice (if using) and a scattering of mint leaves.

beef shiskabob SERVES 6–8 2 brown onions, coarsely grated 2 tablespoons sea salt flakes 1 tablespoon cumin seeds 2 teaspoons caraway seeds 4 cloves garlic 1 teaspoon sea salt flakes, extra 2 teaspoons sweet smoked paprika 2 tablespoons harissa juice of 2 lemons ½ bunch flat-leaf parsley, leaves picked and chopped 1 bunch coriander, leaves picked and chopped 900g scotch fillet steak, trimmed and cut into 3cm cubes

This method of seasoning the onion juice to make a marinade is extraordinarily flavoursome, and the harissa adds a lovely warmth to the dish. Serve with thick plain yoghurt and freshly baked flatbread. Combine the grated onion and salt flakes in a bowl and leave for 10 minutes. Squeeze out the juice through a clean Chux or J-cloth into a large bowl and discard the solids. Grind the cumin seeds, caraway seeds, garlic and extra salt flakes in a mortar and pestle, then add the paprika, harissa and lemon juice. Tip the mixture into the onion juice and stir in the chopped herbs. Add the beef and mix really well, then cover and leave to marinate for 4–6 hours. Thread the beef onto metal skewers and grill for about 3 minutes each side until cooked, but still pink and tender in the middle.

Cassandra Waples & Peter Cazzulino 5 June 2010 THE PROPOSAL Every year Pete and I head to Coolangatta to relax for a few weeks with the kids. A few days into our break and unknown to me, Pete had arranged for my son Corey and his younger brother Michael to head down to the beach and spell out his proposal message in the sand. Meanwhile, he remained in our 17th floor hotel room ready to side track me in case I woke up. After an hour-long digging session the message was complete. Pete came in and woke me up and invited me onto the balcony to check out the sunrise. Of course I was taken by complete surprise and after a quick dip in the ocean we spent the day shopping on the coast for the perfect ring. The message remained there for a week with other guests along the popular strip adding their loved ones names and yes answersâ&#x20AC;Śit was the perfect setting.

THE WEDDING Married at the Sacred Heart Cathedral and enjoyed an elegant and relaxed reception at The Brewery. GUESTS 120 THE DRESS I personalised my gown from the Fashion Gallery by attaching handmade flowers to it. Each of the flowers were specially made by different people, with different fabrics and textures, from all different parts of the world that I sourced through www.etsy.com.au.

THE SHOES From Bridal Blitz; Melissa even gave us a little dance lesson. FLOWERS Malpara Florists. My posy bouquet was filled with mixed white florals including blushing bride, freesias, roses and paper whites. These also followed through the reception in mixed bowls of different heights and sizes and were accompanied by individual giant mum chrysanthemums. The bridesmaidsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; bouquets featured eggplant parrot tulips, freesias, paper whites, roses and hydrangea petals. INVITATIONS Mico Graphic design. We had personalised square invitation booklets featuring the iconic Townsville Brewery clock tower and floral concepts.

ENTERTAINMENT Paula and the guys from Groove got everyone up and dancing and really helped create a great atmosphere. For those not interested in dancing up a storm, the guys from Blackjax provided a full sized Roulette table and Blackjack table inspiring some fierce competition between guests.

PHOTOGRAPHER Andrew Rankin did an amazing job capturing the natural and fun environment of our wedding day. The quick shoot motion video he did around the roulette table was awesome. 7

I can’t thank him enough for being so supportive and positive with all my ‘big’ ideas.

CAKE Happy Cakes. An amazing white three tiered cake with multicoloured sugar confetti tumbling off it. There were three flavours in each tier; peppermint, white raspberry-choc and chocolate.

SPECIAL MEMORIES When my parents gave me away. As Dan shook my dad’s hand, I turned to hug Mum who was tearing up. “Don’t cry,” I told her “Or you’ll make me start” to which a voice replied “Not before me.” I turned to see dad, red faced with tear-filled smiling eyes and a big grin on his face. HONEYMOON We went to the happiest place on earth – Disneyland in Orlando, Florida! We attended our first real Halloween party, went hot-air ballooning and Dan celebrated his 30th birthday by driving a Nascar and Indy car. (Side note: Real ending – on returning to the country Dan was hospitalised with an aggressive strain of pneumonia! He’s now at home and on the mend). 9

We kept our decorations and theme to a minimum and let the location speak for itself. After we were pronounced husband and wife five bottles of champagne were popped in quick succession and our guests were all given a glass to help celebrate the happy occasion. GUESTS 88. We had long-time family friends fly from London and one of my best friends flew in from working abroad in Rome. THE DRESS From a small Melbourne boutique, Brides Of Armadale. THE SHOES As Craig and I are about the same height (he won’t admit I am taller) I chose to wear flats. Bargain of the century when I found a pair of Natasha diamante covered tan coloured flats at Miss Ruby for half price! HAIR Kirsty from Emphasis. She travelled all the way to Mission Beach for us (pregnant and all). MAKEUP Nada from Radiant Beauty Consulting. BRIDESMAID DRESSES A Gerry Shaw design from The Fashion Gallery for my chief bridesmaid, the junior bridesmaid dress came from La Petite Boudoir and the flower girl dress was made at Brides of Armadale.

GROOM’S SUIT Craig wore a dark charcoal suit with a self stripe which he teamed with an ivory shirt. He didn’t wear a tie and all the boys left their shirts out to tie in with the relaxed resort feel. CAKE Cakes By Design. We had cupcakes; fruit cake for the parents, gluten free for the celiac and for everyone else a choice between white and chocolate mud.

FLOWERS The Flower Market. The bouquets were green and comprised calla lilies and cymbidium orchids wrapped in dodda vine. INVITATIONS My Dad was responsible for all of my stationery; save the dates, invitations, menus and seating plan. Our invitations were black and silver and I had personalised stamps made from Australia Post with a picture of Craig and I on them.

MENU Lamb and lychee curry, panko crumbed pork with caramelised apples, potato, pancetta and roast tomato salad, and lemon curd tart with double cream were just a few of the mouth-watering dishes on our menu.

We started in Botswana where we went on safari for six days then it was off to Zambia to do some lion walking and helicopter riding. The last part of honeymoon we spent on an island off the coast of Mozambique. It was absolutely perfect. 17

MENU The Polynesian-themed food we requested was unbelievable. The Chef at Mercure Townsville was great – she researched the menu to make sure we included as much cultural food as possible.

ENTERTAINMENT My background is Samoan, Tongan and Maori so I had traditional dancing from each culture performed by my relatives. Anthony is part Papua New Guinea so he had some family perform a Manus Dance. My brothers and sister sang while we cut the cake

I love making people feel good about themselves and the look on their face when they see themselves in the mirror is just wonderful! Do you have any expert tips for Townsville’s brides-to-be on skin care preparation for their big day? I always tell my brides the better your skin the less foundation you need to wear. So it’s important to start looking after your skin at least six months out from the wedding date. I recommend that they speak to a skincare professional for the best advice. The night before I recommend they exfoliate and apply a hydrating mask to plump their skin.

For many engaged couples, the lead up to the wedding day often brings with it a blur of stress, panic and overwhelming expectations. Somewhere in the midst of that time, couples may feel that they begin to lose sight of what the real event is – a celebration and commitment of their love for each other. At Centacare Townsville, we provide the opportunity for couples to take some time out for each other and to explore the basic tools that a good marriage can be based on, in a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere. Centacare’s Marriage Preparation Course breaks open the concepts of what marriage is, and how to keep the marriage thriving for many years to come. The course is broken up into three sessions – two group sessions (with other engaged couples) and one individual session. Through brief presentations and activities, we examine topics such as: • Helpful ingredients in marriage • Love languages • Relationship cycle • The impact of stress • Communication • Conflict resolution. During the first group session the couples complete the FOCCUS inventory which is designed to gather your views on thirteen important aspects of marriage. Each couple is then able to discuss these views with each other in an individual session with a FOCCUS facilitator. The course aims to provide couples with an opportunity to raise their awareness of what helps marriages to be happy, healthy and fulfilling, and to discuss expectations of their marriage.
