SUMMER STYLE
I
t’s November and love is certainly in the air – just look at our bumper Brides issue. It’s the biggest we’ve had in a long time and, as well as finding everything you need to plan the day of your dreams, we hope you will enjoy the beautiful photos from our five local weddings – a big congratulations to the happy newlyweds! Also this month we asked five couples how they met and, as you’ll see, love can be found in the most unexpected places. I can certainly attest to that after meeting my husband on a bridge in a mining town in Western Australia. Originally from Perth, I had only been there two-and-ahalf weeks after accepting a job at Port Hedland’s weekly newspaper. Everyone told me not to go – “Port Hedland is no place for a young lady who likes to dress-up and wear heels,” they said (rightly so, as I lost many-apair to the cracks in the iron ore-stained pavements and eventually succumbed to thongs), but I knew I had to go. I was heading to work at 7.30am on Monday, deadline day, when my car came to a juddering halt on the only bridge in town. It wouldn’t re-start and I started to panic as the traffic banked-up behind me, with roadtrains coming the other way. Then all of a sudden a white Toyota ute
8
and its driver (who was very good-looking, may I add) hooked me up to his car and towed me off. Once safely out of the way of traffic he introduced himself as Troy – he’d just come off a 12-hour nightshift and returned home to find his housemates had drunk all the beer so was off to another mate’s house to get some. He made a good show of prodding around under the bonnet while I called the RAC and my housemate. I didn’t want to hold him up so I told him that I’d be fine and after a lot of, “Are you sure?” he was on his way. When he got to his friend’s house he told him the story, apparently saying: “I’ve just met the woman I’m going to marry.” His friend said, “Well, did you get her number?” He realised he didn’t so he came straight back. Luckily I was still there and he convinced me to have the car towed to his house so his electrician mates could fix it (and he could be sure to see me again, he later said). I went to his place that night for the best chilli mud crab I’ve tasted and never looked back (P.S. It turned out there was nothing wrong with the car – I had just over-loaded it on the move and the weight had crushed the fuel line!). DUO is also proud to bring you a ‘world exclusive’ this month: the iconic Townsville Crocodiles mascot talks for the first time in 20 years, spilling the beans on what it’s like being the lovable, and sometimes controversial, Croc. We also have plenty of other local stories, stunning fashion and popular regular sections for you to sink your teeth into. We hope you enjoy this issue and always welcome your feedback. Until next month, Carly Lubicz x

12 FACES OF DUO
Every year DUO Magazine holds a competition where 12 local girls are chosen to grace the magazine’s cover for a month of the year. In this month’s issue of DUO we introduce you to:
TISHARA LUI Recently relocated from Cranbrook to the Sunshine Coast, 22-year-old Tishara is now closer to family. She plans to start saving to be able to travel the world. Tishara has her sights set on Europe in particular, but will be coming back to Townsville for regular visits to catch-up with friends.
HAIR
TOUCH OF UTOPIA We blow-dried Tishara’s hair using a holding tool from Schwarzkopf Professional called Osis Hold Miracle. Then, using the standard iron from Cloud Nine, we curled the hair from the roots to mid-lengths. Using the Cloud Nine wand, we curled from the mid-lengths to the ends. We decided to brush out the curls using a dressing brush for some of the photos to give a softer and more glamorous look.
MAKE-UP
TOUCH OF UTOPIA We prepared the base with Youngblood Mineral Primer and then used Mineral Liquid Foundation in ‘Caribbean’; finishing off with the Hi-Definition Hydrating Mineral Powder in ‘Warmth’, which gave a flawless matt finish and perfected Tishara’s skin. We rimmed the eyes with Blackest Black Liner and used Alabaster Loose Eyeshadow under the brow arch and Eggplant Loose Eyeshadow to smoke out the eyes. Onyx Mascara was used to enhance those beautiful lashes. Crushed Mineral Blush in ‘Tulip’ gave Tishara a healthy glow. Her lips were coloured entirely with ‘Malt’ lip liner and finished with ‘Promiscuous’ lip gloss.

horoscope
Endless conflict has recently chipped away at the Sagittarian spirit. Not so now. Despite feeling weary or battle-scarred, you should find this a happier month. No longer the victim, you’ll be mounting sharper defences. There’s plenty of work ahead, but nothing you can’t handle. Should love interests mount a sneak attack, expect some friendly fire.
Capricorn
23 DECEMBER – 20 JANUARY There’s much to be said about expediency, even if it puts the odd nose out of joint. This month, you tire of the endless debates, investigations and exploring of options. There comes a time when the course must be struck, and for you that’s now. Everyone else will just have to fall in line with your thoughts and actions.
What does this month have in store for you? Astrologer Tanya Obreza has these predictions...
24 OCTOBER – 22 NOVEMBER
22 NOVEMBER – 22 DECEMBER
Scorpio
Sagittarius
Leo
23 JULY – 21 AUGUST Many Leos can expect a little extra cash and more variety in life. Changes at home keep you on your toes. Though you’re usually a workaholic, November could find you ducking out the escape hatch. Home’s far more alluring this month, and you’re in the mood to redecorate. There’s nothing like an expensive distraction.
Virgo
22 AUGUST – 23 SEPTEMBER
There’s little point adopting a fixed attitude at a time when adaptability could become your best friend. Loosen up a little, Scorpio. Fortunately, the planets make it easier for you by encouraging changes of direction. There are bound to be moments of trepidation, but this month’s focus is on pushing past known limits. You’ve been stuck in a rut for too long.
You’re on your moral high horse in a month when standing up for your principles could mean a solitary ride into the sunset. You can’t always expect others to please you. Equal opportunity means just that. If tripped up by the past, or a troublesome friend, look to compromise as a solution. A little bit of give and take can work wonders.
Aquarius
Aries
Gemini
Libra
You seem to have a few issues in limbo, which doesn’t make for a good night’s sleep. There’s got to be a tidy way of finalising things, even if it means getting professional advice. But when you’re strapped for cash, options can look decidedly limited. Still, there’s nothing like ridiculous odds and team effort to fire up ingenuity.
If you’re wondering what could make life happier this month, think love and friendship. Just be aware that others may not be all that open with financial facts, and it’s up to you to prise the truth out of less scrupulous cohorts. This could call for a degree of cunning and patience. It may take until late November to see the real figures.
It’s possible that you’ve been caught napping while some plodding tortoise has taken the honours. Remember, setbacks rarely mean failure. Don’t make snap decisions, and don’t adopt a “no news is good news” policy. If you’re not being kept informed, find out why. And if offered a get-rich-scheme that seems too good to be true, it probably is.
If you believe the textbooks, there’s a feeling that Librans are born diplomats. True to a point, but you’re also a control freak - and never happier than when fussing over people and details. November provides plenty to keep mind, body and soul busy. Just allow others some leeway. Best news of all? A possible unexpected windfall.
Pisces
Taurus
Cancer
You’ve made a valiant effort to fall in line, and you almost had others fooled. But the free spirit within is about to spit vengeance. And if certain opportunists thought they’d gained the upper hand, they’re in for a nasty shock. All in all, November is a time of power: sexual, emotional and professional. Here’s your chance to shine.
Some months feel like too much of a chore. If you really can’t put one foot in front of the other, then do take some time to relax. There’ll be plenty of time for work in December. It’s a month, too, to let certain resentments drop, no matter what your convictions might be. The cosmos encourages compromise, so do yourself a favour - forgive and forget.
You can expect too much from relationships, and when your idealistic requirements are shortchanged, disappointment may follow. Ask yourself: have I been too demanding, or withdrawn? Sometimes we erect walls to protect ourselves but, in the process, shut others out. This is the month to demolish some of those not-so-necessary barriers.
21 JANUARY – 19 FEBRUARY
20 FEBRUARY – 20 MARCH
14
21 MARCH – 20 APRIL
21 APRIL – 21 MAY
22 MAY – 21 JUNE
22 JUNE – 22 JULY
24 SEPTEMBER – 23 OCTOBER

INTERVIEW CARLY LUBICZ PHOTO FROM OUTDOOR BY BEN O’DONOGHUE
FOOD FANATIC
“YOU’VE GOT THE BURDEKIN RIVER! THE LOCAL MUD CRABS FROM THERE ARE SPECTACULAR.” – BEN O’DONOGHUE
AFTER MAKING HIS FIRST TRIP TO TOWNSVILLE IN JULY, CELEBRITY CHEF, AUTHOR AND TV PRESENTER BEN O’DONOGHUE IS RETURNING TO THE TROPICS NEXT MONTH TO SERVE A COOKING MASTERCLASS TO FOUR LUCKY FOODIES.
16
B
en O’Donoghue has always been drawn to food; his passion ignited at age five by his Nan. Now with three children of his own (Ruby, 8; Herb, 5; and Cash, 3) who love nothing better than making a mess in the kitchen with Dad, he’s baked a name for himself as one of Australia’s key identities in the mushrooming food and home cooking industries with a series of cookbooks and TV shows. Ben would be most recognised from Surfing the Menu, which saw him travel all over the country with Curtis Stone “meeting wonderful producers and going to spectacular locations”. Another one of his shows – Drive Thru Australia (seeing Ben embark on an Aussie road trip in his
pimped-up 4WD complete with a foldout barbecue kitchen) is still airing on Channel 7. With his Brisbane restaurant and bar South Bank Surf Club picking-up in trade after the devastation of the January floods, Ben is now looking towards his next endeavours – a new cookbook, a possible TV show, new restaurant ventures and – certainly not least – a trip to Townsville next month to coincide with the launch of Stockland Townsville’s stage one of the redevelopment, featuring a new Woolworths and specialty stores. Ben says Townsville is fortunate to have fantastic fresh produce on its doorstep: “You’ve got the Burdekin River – the local mud crabs from there are spectacular,” Ben enthuses. “You’ve got the red spot king prawns off the coast, plus the coral trout, red emperor, red throat emperor and Spanish mackerel. “Obviously tropical fruits are great too, like the mangoes, and you’re not far from Cairns and the Atherton Tablelands, which is some of the best dairy country in Australia.” Ben is big on sustainability and local farmers markets will actually be the focus of his next cookbook. He says it’s important that we as consumers opt for organic and local produce wherever possible for freshness, but also for the animals’ welfare. “I always say buy the best you can afford, but instead of buying chicken breast, buy a whole chicken,” Ben advises. “You may pay a bit more per kilo for an organic free-range bird, but then you’ll get three meals out of it. Marinate the thighs and cook them on the BBQ on skewers, turn the breast into crumbed chicken fingers, and make a soup from the carcass – there’s far less wastage.” Ben will be sharing his cooking skills in demonstrations at Stockland Townsville on Saturday, December 10. After that he’ll be teaching his trademark Jambalaya prawn dish to Stockland’s four lucky winners: “I’ll certainly be sharing all the little cheats, where you go: ‘I didn’t know you could do that!’. We’ll have a little mini dinner party afterwards with a nice wine, so it will be a lot of fun.”
For your chance to win a masterclass with Ben O’Donoghue just spend $40 or more this month at Stockland Townsville. Winners will be announced on Monday, December 5.

interview
YOU WERE BORN 20 YEARS AGO – WHY’D THEY LET YOU LOOSE ON THE COURT? They snapped me up to provide the entertainment because Townsville was a new team in the NBL and my bosses wanted to create something exciting for the crowd and provide a bit of distraction when we were getting flogged. But as the basketball team has improved over time, the players are responsible for most of the entertainment now and I don’t have to work as hard. It’s really all about keeping the crowd happy. WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR MOST MEMORABLE ANTICS? Getting in fights with rival players – a crocodile doesn’t back down and I don’t like hotheads. That will teach them for having a crack at the mascot! We always try to plan segments around particular teams or players, and one of my favourite characters to-date is Serena Williams – I dressed up pretending to be (Cairns Taipans player) Kerry Williams’ sister. I had the huge wig, big false backside and massive earrings. It was perfect timing because she’d just won the Australian Open. I loved dressing as the Village People and every Christmas ‘Father Croc-ness’ comes out. Actually, I think I was the first mascot to create props and tell elaborate stories with them. WHAT’S CHANGED IN 20 YEARS? I can’t be as wild these days because of the cost of insurance – it makes a lot of things too prohibitive. I used to abseil off the roof of the entertainment centre, but I’m not allowed anymore. I can’t even jump off the mini tramp because you can’t put the trampoline on court. Those new rules have significantly changed what I’m allowed to do, but I still manage to have fun. HAS THE CROC EVER GOT IN TROUBLE FOR ANYTHING? Well, last year the NBL reprimanded me for a ‘lewd act’. I was just standing there and a guy bent over in front of me to get the ball, so I pulled my tail between my legs and just stood there. It was live on TV and obviously someone saw it and took offence because it was all over all the national papers and television and I nearly got banned for a few games. It was just one of those spontaneous things – I always pull my tail between my legs and play with it. I thought it was funny, but clearly some thought it was rude! Bad Croc! To put that rude tail back in its place, the following game it was cut off – a hospital bed was wheeled onto court and we had an operation. After it was amputated by Pricey the offensive tail was put on a platter and given to the NBL.
20
YOU MADE QUITE AN IMPRESSION ON JULIA GILLARD… When I dressed up as Tony Abbott in my Speedos and I gave her John Howard’s Lazarus Rising to sign? She did sign it, but said she didn’t believe it was a particularly good book. I’m probably the only person who has a book signed by a current Labor Prime Minister written by the previous Liberal Prime Minister. People told me I wouldn’t get away with it, but assured them she couldn’t say no because she’d look like a bad sport. I thought she looked better for doing it. I went up to her after and she told me I was a very naughty boy. YOUR FOUR-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER’S INVOLVED NOW – HOW’D THAT HAPPEN? She’s called ‘50 per cent’ and it started as a fancy dress thing at Christmas last year, but she’s got right into being my little sidekick and comes onto the court and kicks things around. She understands what it is to be a Croc, including knowing the death roll, and absolutely loves it. She’s a mini version of me. HOW DO YOU FIT ALL THE GAMES INTO YOUR BUSY DAY-TO-DAY SCHEDULE? I’ve never missed a game in 20 years and it can be tricky at times – after all a Croc still needs to work full time to support his Croc-ettes at home. The Croc family has sacrificed a few family holidays, but I love it and being part of the games is what I do every season. HOW DO YOU COME-UP WITH THE IDEAS? It’s hard! I think of most of my ideas at night while I’m in bed – I’ll just write them down and chew over them for a few days to work out how to do it. The WWF wrestlers are great to watch because they combine sports with theatrics, but my hero is Wiley Coyote with his Acme products – he gives me a lot of inspiration for my stunts. He doesn’t talk either. HOW DO YOU GO ‘NOT TALKING’? You’ve got to be good at acting. I need to convey what I’m thinking to 5,000 people by actions only. I’ve worked with Pricey for about 13 years – he does all the talking for me and seems to know exactly what I’m thinking anyway – I think he’s a Croc psychic. DO YOU HAVE ANY FAVOURITE PLAYERS? As long as they’re Croc players they’re my favourite because they’re my team. They love me too – I’m actually the only mascot who’s had a team named after them. We used to be the Townsville Suns, but they changed it because I was so attractive and marketable. I’m still not allowed to hang out with the players in the dressing room though.

WOODFORD & CO.
DESIGNER SHEREE COMMERFORD INTERVIEW CARLA CARUSO
MIXING TOMBOY PREP WITH ‘70S BOHO; THE HOT NEW SUMMER COLLECTION FROM LABEL WOODFORD & CO, DUBBED “BOHEMIAN GATSBY”, SIZZLES. VISIT WOODFORDANDCO.COM.AU.
DESCRIBE YOUR CHILDHOOD ON THE SMALL ISLAND OF WOODFORD IN NORTHERN NSW – YOUR LABEL’S NAMESAKE. Growing up on Woodford Island was, I guess, a typical country upbringing. We lived 5km out of town with not a neighbour in sight. You had to make your own fun and be resourceful. [The family] lived – and still do – on the water surrounded by cane and cattle farms. There would be cane fires, floods and days at the cattle sales. Taking ‘smoko’ to my father out on the farm when I was young is one of my fondest memories. It made me curious about the world I knew nothing about and gave me the drive to want to see it. I now live on Sydney’s northern beaches. WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER THE BIG BREAK FOR YOUR LABEL? My biggest break was when Australian Vogue editor] Kirstie Clements came to my launch and decided to champion the brand… Woodford & Co. is [now] four years old. YOU HAVE PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE IN STYLING AND WARDROBE. ANY HIGHLIGHTS FROM THIS TIME OF YOUR CAREER? Travelling the world was a highlight. Adventures such as sneaking out of Nias [an island off Indonesia] via military helicopter in the middle of the night during a rebel coup – after being through an earthquake and getting food poisoning – does stand out! Styling Heidi Klum on the brink of stardom was also a goodie. She was the most professional, down-to-earth talent I had worked with. WOODFORD & CO. HAS BEEN SAID TO COMBINE ‘IVY LEAGUE PREP WITH MARINE STRIPES’. SO IT MUST HAVE BEEN COOL TO HAVE THE QUEEN OF PREP, GOSSIP GIRL’S BLAKE LIVELY, WEAR ONE OF YOUR DESIGNS. ANY OTHER CELEBRITY FANS? Drew Barrymore recently ordered a bunch of things and SJP [Sarah Jessica Parker] was kind enough to introduce [stylist] Patricia Field to the brand, from which they pulled for Sex and the City 2.
YOUR LABEL TAKES STRONG REFERENCES FROM COUNTRY AND COASTAL LIVING. WHAT WAS IT LIKE INITIALLY AS A GIRL FROM A COUNTRY TOWN TAKING ON THE FASHION WORLD IN THE BIG CITY OF SYDNEY? Exciting and inspiring! [I was] naïve, I guess, but maybe that was a good thing. Nothing wasn’t possible! DESCRIBE THE INSPIRATION FOR YOUR LATEST COLLECTION, BOHEMIAN GATSBY. ANY INFLUENCE FROM THE GREAT GATSBY FILM? Definitely – the mood, the prints and classic shapes that bordered between feminine and boyish styles. Everything from the setting to Mia Farrow’s wardrobe, but mostly, it was Robert Redford’s character and his Ralph Lauren get-ups [Australian director Baz Luhrmann is now filming an updated version of the tale, starring Leonardo DiCaprio]. WAS IT FUN SHOOTING YOUR SUMMER FASHION CAMPAIGN ON A YACHT? Not entirely! I had a new-born baby, so I was expressing [milk] below deck in the terrible heat during every break, while the crew were swimming and frolicking in the water! DESCRIBE WHY THIS QUOTE BY BRIGITTE BARDOT PARTICULARLY RESONATES WITH YOU: ‘I’M A GIRL FROM A GOOD FAMILY WHO WAS VERY WELL BROUGHT UP. ONE DAY, I TURNED MY BACK ON IT ALL AND BECAME A BOHEMIAN.’ I like it when people live their lives true to themselves. There is also something romantic about throwing all that is expected to the wind and being truly free. This thought inspires me when I design for Woodford. WHAT TYPE OF WOMAN DOES WOODFORD & CO. BEST SUIT? It could be any woman depending on how she is feeling that day. What character she wants to be, what adventure she wants to take on! WHAT ARE YOUR PASSIONS OUTSIDE OF WORK? My number one passion is my family. I’m [also] obsessed with film [and] I miss the days of being able to spend an entire day reading a book. I love summer, wine, friends and the ocean. [I’m also] currently obsessing over antique group portrait shots for a collage, and love exploring the world!

HOW SIGNIFICANT IS WINNING THE COSMOPOLITAN MODEL SEARCH? Madeline: It’s a big deal because we get sent to Melbourne in March and, if you win from that, there are five international contracts available. It’s a big step. HAVE YOU DONE MUCH MODELLING BEFORE? Madeline: We’ve done the Fashion Bash and Rhonda’s Final Touch in the past couple of years, but we’ve never got as far as we did in the Cosmopolitan Model Search last month. Everyone always said we should give modelling a go, but we only tried it for the first time about two years ago. IS IT NERVE-WRACKING BEING ON THE CATWALK? Kaitlin: It was to start with, but it’s good now – each time you do it, it gets easier! I was really shy before, but it’s really brought me out of my shell and I actually really enjoy doing the runways now. Madeline: I think I prefer the magazine shoots – I still like runway, but I just love the fun of photo shoots! INTERVIEW CARLY LUBICZ PHOTOS ANDREW RANKIN
MODEL MATERIAL LOCAL SISTERS MADELINE, 18, AND KAITLIN, 20, COWE RECENTLY STRUTTED INTO FIRST AND SECOND PLACE AT LOCAL HEAT OF THE COSMOPOLITAN MODEL SEARCH.
WHAT ARE YOU DOING OUTSIDE MODELLING? Madeline: I’m studying first-year law at JCU and really enjoy it – I’d like to finish the degree so I have a fallback to the modelling. I really like criminal law, so I’m aiming for that. We also love horse riding in our spare time. Kaitlin: I’m working at the Magistrates Court – I’ve been doing that since I left Year 12. We went to school in Tully because our parents own a cane and cattle property up there. Mum was going to come down to watch the competition, but we told her not to worry because we didn’t think we’d win and it was too far! WERE YOUR MUM AND DAD PLEASED THAT YOU BOTH DID SO WELL? Madeline: Yes, she’s been calling everyone, including all the grandparents! Mum’s coming to Melbourne with us next year so that will be great. DO YOU HAVE OTHER SIBLINGS? Kaitlin: A younger sister – she’s turning 17 this month. She doesn’t really have any interest in pursuing modelling though because she’s a hairdresser and is pretty happy doing that. HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT COMPETING AGAINST EACH OTHER? Madeline: It’s always good having someone you know there, but it’s a lot better when we both win something! Kaitlin: Yes, but there’s definitely no sibling rivalry – we’re just there to support each other and if one of us wins we’ll be happy!

MORE ON MUECK: ■ Ron’s early career was as a model maker and puppeteer for children’s television and films, notably the film Labyrinth, for which he also contributed the voice of Ludo. ■ As well as producing larger-than-life creations, some of Mueck’s most famous works venture to the other end of the scale, like the 1 metre long Dead dad (1996-97) – a hyper-realistic sculpture of Mueck’s dead father, naked, lying on the floor.

IN BED WITH A GIANT KNOWN FOR HIS LARGER-THAN-LIFE AND BREATHTAKINGLY INTRICATE DEPICTIONS OF THE HUMAN FORM, AUDIENCES ARE SET TO BE WOWED THIS MONTH WHEN ONE OF LONDON-BASED ARTIST RON MUECK’S TRADEMARK SCULPTURES STIRS IN TOWNSVILLE.
“I THINK VIEWERS START TO FEEL A STRONG SENSE OF IDENTIFICATION WITH THE SCULPTURE.”
R
on Mueck’s works have been known to shock. Not just because of their notably exaggerated or minimised scales, but also due to their amazing life-like quality where every vein, pore, blemish and hair is portrayed with an unsettling degree of realism. Born in Melbourne to parents with German heritage, Ron Mueck’s captivating sculptures have travelled to museum exhibitions all over the world, but it’s the first time that one of his hulking human forms has toured regional Queensland. The Queensland Art Gallery (QAG) describes Mueck’s products as: “Some of the most widely acclaimed and identifiable works in the international contemporary art arena”. His most-recognised pieces include Boy (1999), Pregnant woman (2002), Swaddled baby (2002) and In bed – one of his more recent works that depicts a 7m-long middle-aged woman lost in thought under her bedclothes. It’s In bed (2005) that will be expertly hauled around the state to five Queensland regional galleries in the coming months as part of a touring exhibition to mark the Gallery of Modern Art’s fifth birthday. Nick Chambers – curator of contemporary international art at the Queensland Art Gallery – says it’s exciting to be able to showcase the work to Townsville audiences since the gallery acquired the sculpture in 2008, but admits the team has its work cut out in transporting and assembling the monumental figure. “The planning of the Ron Mueck touring exhibition has been an enormous task for the gallery’s regional services team,” Nick reveals. “The scale of the work and the delicate nature of its surface also present challenges for our conservators, registrars and installation staff who have developed systems to ensure the safe transportation and installation of the sculpture at five Queensland venues.” Nick has regular contact with the sculpture, but is constantly amazed by Mueck’s ability to achieve a naturalistic, life-like appearance in his works, saying it’s an extraordinary feat to behold: “After the initial feeling of shock at the
subject’s massively exaggerated scale and naturalistic appearance, I think viewers start to feel a strong sense of identification with the sculpture,” Nick tells. “They might recognise themselves lost in similar moments of solitary reflections or, perhaps, try to imagine what kind of thoughts could be passing through the subject’s mind.” As an artist, Ron Mueck likes to keep to himself. He avoids interviews about his work, but is widely known and respected for the level of his skill. Nick says: “Ron is the kind of artist who is closely involved at every stage of the creative process – from initial sketches on paper where he experiments with different poses, through to tests with small-scale clay models, the production of casts and, ultimately, the highly detailed surface work. Other sculptors are often quite amazed when they first see his work.” The creation of Mueck’s sculptures is an extremely time-consuming process. For In bed, Mueck started off by sketching and experimenting with plaster maquettes. He then constructed a large metal armature, which was covered in plaster and the modelling clay. A silicon mould was then made of the sculpture, which was painstakingly prepared by the artist in order to create a naturalistic texture and colour to the skin. Hairs were then individually inserted in the hand-drilled holes and – finally – finer details, such as veins and imperfections in the skin, were painted by the artist directly onto the work. With the sculpture attracting more than 185,000 visitors to Brisbane’s Gallery of Modern Art in 2010, it has certainly proved a popular piece that art lovers insist is a mustsee up-close. Townsville audiences can view In bed at Pinnacles Gallery at Riverway from November 19 to January 8.

GRANT COLLINS | AUDIOLOGIST | CLARITY HEARING SOLUTIONS
HEAR WEDDING BELLS, AND EVERYTHING ELSE
DON’T MISS THE IMPORTANT PARTS OF YOUR LOVED ONES’ SPECIAL DAYS – THERE ARE SEVERAL HEARING SOLUTIONS THAT CAN BE ENGAGED. I have written previously about hearing solutions at weddings, however, I have been to several special occasions since where we have taken different approaches to solving a family member’s communication difficulties. I went to my cousin’s wedding in Charleville just recently and my aunty was present who has a severe hearing loss. Unfortunately, because she left the treatment of her hearing loss too late, the damage to her speech nerves is severe and now she is unable to hear clearly from longer distances or in background noise. This made it impossible for her to be able to hear the priest at the church, or the speeches and general conversation during the reception. To solve the problem at the church, I set up a personal FM system to her hearing aids. We put an FM program into her hearing aids, so she just had to wear an induction loop around her neck under her shirt. The priest wore a microphone around his neck, which sent an FM signal straight to her hearing aids via the induction loop around her neck. So to her it sounded as if he was talking directly into her ears, yet she was 20m away from the priest. The only problem was that she forgot to take it off afterwards
and she was inadvertently privy to numerous conversations between the priest and others! Once at the reception, we put the FM microphone on the lectern where all the speeches were made. Again the mic picked up all the audio and she heard each person’s delivery directly in her ears and didn’t miss a word. To overcome the problems with general conversation in the background noise, I set up the FM system via a remote directional microphone. She just directed the microphone into the general direction of where someone was talking and all her hearing aids picked up was the person the microphone was pointed to. She told me she heard and understood almost every single word in all the environments where she would normally pick up nothing. If you don’t have FM systems set up, there are other strategies that can be explored to overcome these difficulties. Most churches in Townsville have induction loops around certain seats in the church. Most hearing aids have induction coils built into them so you are able to receive the sound straight to the hearing aids via the induction loop.
At the reception, positioning is critical. Most hearing aids have direction microphones where they accentuate sounds in front more than behind. Position yourself at the front or close to a wall and put all the noise behind you. If you’re minimising the noise in front of you by being up the front or close to a wall and your hearing aids are accentuating these sounds more that those behind, then your chances of being able to hear in these environments will be greatly improved.
Let’s make it clear... You can have crystal clear hearing again. Using state of the art invisible technology and the highest clinical Audiological standards, Clarity Hearing Solutions will change your life…

FLASH YOUR WINNING SMILE
IMPROVE YOUR CONFIDENCE AND BOOST THE MOOD OF THOSE AROUND YOU BY CREATING A BEAUTIFUL SMILE.
Smiling is a way of conveying our happiness and it has been shown to increase attractiveness and likeability. However, some of us feel embarrassed about our teeth and avoid smiling for this reason. Having a nice smile can improve confidence and make us feel happier about ourselves and improve our self-image. The mouth is a focal point on the face and when people are communicating they tend to make eye contact or watch a person’s mouth move. Dentistry is primarily health-focused, ensuring the teeth and gums are healthy and the mouth is functional for eating and talking. Aesthetics is not always a concern for some people and that’s OK, but others are keen to improve their mouth yet do not mention to anyone, even their dentist, their secret desire to steal a room with their bright smile. Instead they keep it to themselves, not wanting to sound vain, thinking orthodontics is the only way, or believing that they are too old now, or that whitening is too difficult. Nonetheless, if given the choice, most people would opt for a dazzling Hollywood smile that lights up the room.
You may be surprised what can be done for you. When most people think about a confident smile, images of perfect, straight, white teeth jump to mind. Orthodontics and whitening are certainly options towards obtaining that goal. However, they are not the only option. Veneers are fillings that can be placed on the teeth to cover up imperfections, lengthen them, and make them wider – whatever is required to create an aesthetic appearance for you. Crowns can also be used for a more long-term solution, which are like a protective covering for the tooth: they are a strong and long-lasting restorative and aesthetic option. A confident smile could change your life by improving your confidence, boosting your mood and possibly even lifting your social life – after all, it’s human nature to want to be around positive, happy, smiling people. We are much more approachable when we are smiling. When I speak to people who are selfconscious about their smile, they express that their teeth “have been like that forever” and they’re “too old now and it’s too late”.
My response is to encourage them to take a step back and look at how young they are because it’s never too late to do something for yourself. If the life expectancy is approximately 85, by 30 you have only lived about 12 years of your adult life! This is your body and you spend a long time in it – longer than you will have any other vehicle. Some people wait until a major event happens to do something about a smile they have been dissatisfied with for years – a wedding, divorce or retirement. But why not do it just for you? You deserve to be truly happy and not hold back. It could make someone’s day seeing you smile. Having a beautiful smile that lights up a room is important to some, while being able to smile without putting your hand up to cover your mouth is important to others. So whatever your aim, there are a variety of methods we can enlist to help people with all sorts of budgets. For the month of November we have 20 per cent off our home whitening trays. Enquire today to see if home whitening is appropriate for you.

CO-SLEEPING: MAKE IT A NO-GO
FROM MY DESK
IT WAS THE NIGHT BEFORE THE AFL GRAND FINAL AND NOT A CREATURE WAS STIRRING.
“ONE IN TWO BABIES WHO DIED WERE CO-SLEEPING WITH A PARENT”
All through the city of Melbourne everyone was gearing up for a big day. They knew they had to get an early night. It was the Grand Final. So much noise and colour. You would not want to be facing that with a lack of sleep and a hangover you could photograph. Would you? And so it was that four brave souls ventured to Melbourne and went to lunch. This is not unusual. A man has to eat. What was unusual was that at nearly 11pm that evening I received a text from one of these hardy travellers saying: “Just ran into your boss. We put in a good word for you and said we need a Cabinet Minister in Townsville.” Now, normally you would discount these stories. What probably happened was that they saw Tony Abbott across the street and yelled something at him. He would have waved politely and continued on his way. Imagine my surprise when I received a text from T.ABBS (my daughter’s moniker for him) saying: “Just bumped into some mates of yours. Cabinet hey?” The boys came home and were absolutely chuffed that Tony had acknowledged their submission and they must have done a great job in articulating my abilities and the passion for the job. Well, not quite.
Much is written and rewritten about co-sleeping (that is parents and their baby sharing a bed or sleeping together in some other way). It seems to be one of the great debates of our world, just like nappies (cloth vs. disposable) or breastfeeding vs. bottle feeding; but – unfortunately – the consequences of co-sleeping can be much more serious. I have never quite understood how parents can take the risk associated with co-sleeping. I certainly do understand how mums can become so tired, exhausted, and sleep-deprived that they accidentally fall asleep while feeding their newborn. But to purposely decide to co-sleep or to get into the habit of co-sleeping really should be a no-go zone. It is well known, documented and even recently researched in a controlled study completed in England, with all results indicating that co-sleeping, or sharing a bed with your baby, can lead to every parent’s worst nightmare: having your baby suffocate while you sleep unaware. The statistics are alarming. If you do a bit of research, basically one in two babies who died were co-sleeping with a parent. Or if you prefer percentages, that’s about 54 per cent of infant deaths. In Victoria, for example, 33 of the 72 unexplained child deaths in the past three years were sleeping with an adult. What a huge risk we parents are taking with our children’s lives. No parent purposely goes about to smother their child – it is an accident and accidents do happen. It’s a combination of fatigue, exhaustion, pillows, doonas and soft beds that contribute to such a death. Or, as seen more recently, baby slings when your baby’s face is covered or airway squashed. I often find myself recalling the words of a parent who I saw several years ago who was also a forensic pathologist with the police force and had the job of being called out to the deaths of babies and children. In his estimate, it was more like 80 per cent of deaths that were caused in a co-sleeping situation, which resulted in the baby being smothered. Whatever the benefits of co-sleeping, they are surely not worth such a risk to your baby. We do not live in a society where co-sleeping is a necessity due to space, or warmth, and we do not usually sleep on mats on the floor, so there should be no need for co-sleeping. If you are struggling to get your baby to sleep then please contact your paediatrician for advice.
“WE PUT IN A GOOD WORD FOR YOU AND SAID WE NEED A CABINET MINISTER IN TOWNSVILLE.” In Canberra the following week, I walked into the party room meeting. I sit a couple of rows back from the front. There is no seating plan. You just get used to sitting with the same people. Tony made his address and outlined the week in front of us, the challenges we would face, and any legislation coming before the Parliament etc. My ears prickled when he finished with: “Ewen, can I see you after the meeting?” He said this aloud, in front of every one! Cabinet?! The rest of the meeting was a blur. I was just lost in a world of high-level negotiations, having the future of the country in my hands, and – above all – being able to finally prove once and for all that I was the best of my parents’ three sons. “Sorry, can’t come now. Tony wants to see me”, and, “I will be along later. I have to talk to Tony”. These were my refrains to the other members of the party as they filed out. No, they were not actually speaking to me, but I was not going to let the chance slide. I was about to be promoted! The room was nearly empty when he finally caught my eye and gave me one of those crooked smiles – the smile he gives to Cabinet Ministers. “So, mate, you had some friends down for the Grand Final. Where’s their store?” “Store? They each have their own businesses and jobs. They don’t have a shop Tony”. “But they sell furniture. They were going on and on about cabinets.” Oh, the shame. The shame. 46

INTERVIEW STEPHANIE SMITH
FIVE MINUTES WITH WIL ANDERSON MOST PEOPLE KNOW WIL ANDERSON AS HOST OF ADVERTISING SHOW THE GRUEN TRANSFER (AND NOW GRUEN PLANET). OTHERS KNOW HIM AS ‘THAT COMEDIAN WHO KIND OF LOOKS LIKE ADAM HILLS’. YOU’VE BEEN PERFORMING STAND-UP SHOWS SINCE 1997 – HOW DO YOU KEEP THEM FRESH? This is the most important thing about being a comedian. Comedy audiences have a voracious appetite for new material. It’s not like music when you can write a new song and play it forever. As a comedian you never hear one of your routines as a music track in an elevator. Nobody ever comes to a gig, holds up their lighter, and yells out: “Do Klim is Milk spelled backwards from 1999!” IS IT TRUE YOUR ABC SHOW THE GLASS HOUSE WAS CANCELLED DUE TO PRESSURE FROM THE HOWARD GOVERNMENT? I don’t think so. In fact, when the show was cancelled John Howard put out a press release to say he had nothing to do with it. It is kind of cool when you lose your job and the PM of the country feels the need to put out a press release. When I lost my job delivering pamphlets when I was 16 because I allegedly put them down the drain, the PM was suspiciously quiet. HOW MUCH OF GRUEN IS SCRIPTED? Only the spine of the show is scripted (e.g. the throws to the clips, pitches etc). All of the conversations and jokes that happen are on-the-spot. We just tape about double what we use and edit around it. IS IT FUN TO HOST THE SHOW? I wish I could say it was fun to host Gruen, but I would be lying. It is, by far, the most complex thing I have had to do. It’s fun when it is finished. I compare it to running a marathon. There isn’t often, while you are running, that you get a chance to enjoy yourself. You just have to keep going when you hit the wall and wee is running down your leg. It is only when it is over you get a chance to reflect on what you have achieved and be proud of that. Gruen is a lot like that. Horrible to do, nice to have done. WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD FOR WIL ANDERSON? I am not a planner. I subscribe to the Woody Allen line: “If you want to make God laugh then tell him your plans.”

ACTION PHOTOS: STEPHEN DUFFIE
TOWNSVILLE FIRE VICE CAPTAIN
When did you start playing basketball? I started at six – my three older siblings all played so I was raring to get going. It was when Michael Jordan was peaking so the spor t was internationally huge! What kept you interested? I’m really competitive and love the aggression of the game. I also enjoy all the girls I meet – I have made friends for life through basketball. What’s been your most significant accomplishment? Probably playing for the Australian senior team. Are you aiming for the Olympics? I would love to make it back in the Australian squad but, for me, it’s easier to make short-term really achievable goals like having a great start to the WNBL season and training hard consistently. Do you work
outside basketball? I have just started as an environmental scientist at the Queensland Nickel refinery. It’s the first job I’ve had in my field, so it’s really exciting and I hope to get some great experience out of it. I’m still studying and hoping (fingers-crossed I pass!) to finish my Masters of Groundwater Hydrology this semester. How did you find playing in America? I loved playing for Duke University and living in North Carolina. Basketball is huge over there and the college game has a big following. We played in front of average crowds of about 5,000 to 6,000. In my senior year we made the Championship game and played in front of 24,000 on the Boston Celtics’ home court. Why do you think basketball has
such a good female following? Women’s basketball is really different to men’s – it’s really structured and I think our defensive is more physical and aggressive in Australia than other countries. We also surprise people with our athleticism and skill. What brought you to the new-look Townsville Fire? Chris Lucas (the coach) is a long-time friend of mine. And I was just ready for a change and thought Townsville was headed in the right direction! What can spectators look forward to in coming months? I think we have an exciting group with lots of scoring options and a gritty defensive mentality. Hopefully we surprise some people and dominate at home this season.

FIFTH-DEGREE INTERNATIONAL INSTRUCTOR WITH AUTHENTIC TAEKWON-DO
How significant is being a fifth-degree Taekwon-Do instructor? There are nine levels of black belt, starting as a first-degree black belt through to a ninth-degree grandmaster. I asked my Master how many fifth-degree females there are and he said, “In all my years with the International Taekwon-Do Federation (ITF), you’re only the third I know of in Australia”. What is Taekwon-Do? It’s known as the ultimate in selfdefence. The words translated mean literally ‘the art of hand and foot fighting’. It’s about the great friends and family that you become a part of; the opportunities to compete at local, state, national and international levels; and the improvements to fitness, confidence and self-discipline. What have 48
you got out of it over the years? I’ve gained a lot of confidence in who I am and what I can achieve. Starting at 10 years old, I’ve grown up with Taekwon-Do and even met the amazing man who is now my husband of 15 years. Are your children also involved? Yes, both our daughter Aliesha (13) and son Brodie (11) train with me at my Pimlico branch of Authentic Taekwon-Do. It’s fun and special to be able to train with my children and enjoy our time together. What are some of the biggest misconceptions about the sport? That Taekwon-Do is about beating people up and breeds aggressiveness – this is so far from the truth! The moral culture of Taekwon-Do is based on courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control
and indomitable spirit. Also, you don’t have to be young – it’s accessible to all people of all ages and abilities. A 50-year-old mother joined us and by the time she was 54 she’d gone to Malaysia with the Australian team and came back with a gold and silver medal! Plus, this year, I trained with a second-degree lady in her mid 60s. How far do you want to go in the sport? I loved representing Australia at the ITF World Taek won-Do Championship in 2005, and as a club we are working towards the next World Championships in Florida next year. It will be six years before the possibility of my next grading for sixth-degree, so for now I’ll take each day as it comes!

RAY VALDETER I MANAGER I MORLEYS FUNERAL HOME
CREDIBILITY OFFERS PEACE-OF-MIND
MAKE INDUSTRY ACCREDITATION A PRIORITY WHEN SELECTING A FUNERAL HOME.
You may be surprised to learn that, in Queensland, there is no current legal requirement for funeral directors to be licensed. Neither is there any form of regulation in place regarding funeral care, standards for premises, facilities and equipment. So how does one choose a funeral home that will inspire confidence and trust? Recognised funeral industry associations are really the only form of watchdog in the industry. Membership in these associations is usually a sign of a trusted and well-equipped funeral home, because it’s required to comply with each association’s vigorous standards. Morleys Funerals is currently the only funeral home in Australia to hold membership in three accredited funeral associations, those being: Queensland Funeral Directors Association (since 1984), Australian Funeral Directors Association (since 1965), and Selected Independent Funeral Homes (whereby you become a member by invitation only, since 1990). As members of these associations, we are required to comply with a strict code of ethics and code of conduct; provide a high standard of facilities, equipment, service and training; plus comply with ongoing professional development. To maintain full accreditation our facilities and equipment are inspected every three years to ensure we are up to the standard expected of us. Plus our staff also undergo regular training programs in various areas – whether it’s education in funeral
service delivery, dealing with grief or even furthering the techniques of our two fully-trained and AIE certified embalmers – it’s all about ensuring the Morleys Funerals team has the ability to fulfil families’ expectations and a very sensitive and important time. One should never assume that all funeral providers are association members or meet these strict standards, and it’s important these credentials are checked before their services are engaged. If you can’t see the industry association logos displayed on their paperwork or marketing material, don’t be afraid to ask if they are members. You only get one chance to properly honour a loved one and it’s important they are entrusted to the most professional funeral provider possible. Morleys is proud to say that its focus is to treat the deceased as we would look after our own family. Being a third-generation family business in its fifty-first year of operation, the Morley family is committed to the ideals of first class funeral care and we pride ourselves on a tradition of affordable quality, offering a wide range of choices to suit our clients’ needs. By all means, compare our facilities and service – we feel sure that you’ll be pleasantly surprised by our high standards and the excellent value we offer. That’s why Morleys Funeral Home is Townsville’s trusted name in funeral service.
Generations of Care We’re proud of our legacy of service. It’s been a privilege to provide generations of care. Allow us to continue that tradition of care. Call on us in your time of loss and see the difference. There is no time like now to plan your funeral ahead of time.

travel
Blenheim is the Marlborough’s (located at the top of the South Island) main centre and offers an ideal base to explore the leisure and lifestyle attractions of the region, one of those being the world-famous sauvignon blanc. While you can tour the wineries by coach, luxury car and even helicopter, nothing beats the humble push-bike for gulping-in all the sights and sounds. There are several operators to choose from. Wine Tours by Bike is one that collects you from your accommodation and arms you with everything you need for the day, including a map and a wine pouch strapped to your bike for all the bottles you end up ‘investing’ in. I would recommend doing the full-day hire (NZ$58 for four to eight hours) – we tried to do it in half a day but only made it to two wineries because we got chatting to the person doing the tastings (invariably the owner or manager) and heard all about the local wine industry and the stories from the region. Another worthwhile idea is spacing your lunch over multiple wineries – have an entrée at one, your mains at the next and dessert at the end. This way you experience a diverse range of flavours and you’re not too bloated to ride! Some of the 40 wineries in cooee include St Clair (a bit out of the way, but worth it), Drylands, Hunter’s (lovely home-style restaurant with wood fire), Cloudy Bay, Allan Scott, Nautilus and Highfield Estate. It’s extremely flat in the wine country, so an easy ride, and there are plenty of sights to see on the way. Just watch you don’t get too wobbly after the tastings!
QUEEN CHARLOTTE WALK IN MARLBOROUGH SOUNDS Even if you don’t like walking, the Queen Charlotte Track is a must for its breathtaking views of the crystal clear Marlborough Sounds. The Queen Charlotte Track runs almost the entire length of New Zealand’s Queen Charlotte Sound, stretching from Ship Cove to Anakiwa and passing through historic sites, secluded bays and lush coastal bush. While the entire track is 71km (bit too long to do in a morning – try three to five days), it’s fairly flat and broken down into sections and – the best bit of all – you can stay there overnight, but you don’t have to carry your bags (there are operators who transport your luggage every day). We did the Mistletoe Bay section through to Lochmara Lodge which took about three to four hours and involved an uphill climb to an lookout which offered 360 degree views over three of the bays. The beauty of the aquamarine water against the lush hills and bright blue sky was breathtaking. A tip is to bring snacks up there (an ideal opportunity to try the North Island’s famous Puhoi blue cheese) and spend a good hour taking it all in (and don’t forget to charge your camera like we did).

HAVELOCK MUSSELS
OVERNIGHT AT LOCHMARA LODGE
For seafood lovers a trip to the Mussel Pot in Havelock is a must. This iconic Marlborough restaurant and café specialises in green-lipped mussels (or green shell as they are also known) but the menu also features a variety of seafood as well as steak, pastas and even a homemade burger. Choose from dishes like steamed mussels with blue cheese, wine and parsley; grilled mussels with lemon mushroom cream; mussel chowder; battered mussels and mussel platters featuring a mix of the lot. It should be noted here for those who have a particular fondness of mussels and a handiness on the stove, the delicious morsels are available for NZ$2.99 a kilo in the supermarket. Why not whip-up your own inspired concoction (one of our favourites was creamy garlic mussels with leek) while you sip on your favourite bottle from the wine tour (if you have any left!) and soak-up that spectacular scenery.
Depending on your accommodation desires, there are plenty of wellequipped camp sites along the track for those who enjoy nights under the stars, but there’s also a host of more upmarket options like Lochmara Lodge. They will collect you from Picton and transport you 30 minutes to the lodge, take your bags to your room, then drop you on the Queen Charlotte Track so you can just walk back at your own leisure. If you time it properly you’ll arrive in time for lunch where you can savour some of the delicious seasonal dishes and Marlborough wines from the modern café/restaurant. This retreat comprises a mix of chalets and units and is tucked in Lochmara Bay between the water and lush bush-clad hills of the Marlborough Sounds. Its painstakingly cultivated grounds (envisioned and built by the current owners Louise and Shayne) also double as a wildlife recovery centre and arts centre. Supporting New Zealand artists; unique works are strategically placed all over the winding grounds to form a sculpture trail – something you can discover while exploring the entirety of the property, which also boasts hill-side hammocks, rope swings and an exclusive bath house where you and your travelling buddy can soak in separate baths while gazing upon the pristine views of the bay.

NEW MAN. NEW BRAND. RELATIVELY NEW TO THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER POST AT TOWNSVILLE ENTERPRISE, DAVID KIPPIN AND HIS TEAM ARE ALREADY FORGING FULL-STEAM AHEAD TO DRIVE THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE REGION.
WHAT IS THE ESSENCE OF THE ‘TOWNSVILLE REGIONAL BRAND’? The new regional brand encompasses everything that makes the Townsville region different from our neighbours – real diversity and real opportunities or – as I refer to it – ‘the real deal’. This overarching brand can be used for a variety of purposes including investment, skills and relocation attraction by both Townsville Enterprise and third parties; destination marketing by Townsville Enterprise and local tourism operators, raising general awareness of the region, community pride and engagement; and as an added value for private sector marketing. WHAT ARE THE KEY FUNCTIONS OF TEL? Townsville Enterprise is the peak economic development and destination-marketing organisation for the Townsville region. It’s a non-profit membership-based organisation that creates responsible and sustainable economic growth for the benefit of members, residents, visitors and investors. We work with federal and state governments, government agencies and the private sector; provide valuable resources to the tourism industry; and seek opportunities to bring business meetings, conferences, exhibitions, conventions and major events to the region. 56
WHAT ARE SOME OF TEL’S CURRENT MAJOR PROJECTS? The ‘North Queensland Emerging Leaders’ program will educate our ‘emerging leaders’ on the issues, opportunities and challenges that impact Townsville’s region, locally, nationally and globally by using the knowledge and expertise of our current leaders and experts. The ‘Get Connected’ project will assist North Queensland businesses in taking full advantage of the National Broadband Network (NBN) by displaying ways business can benefit from the super-fast Internet connection. The ‘Workforce Development’ project will work with industry to develop and implement a workforce development strategy to address the current and future workforce development needs. The ‘Intermodal Transit Centre’ is designed to investigate and develop investment opportunities and assess the requirement for a major transport and freight forward hub for North Queensland. WHO ARE THE MEMBERS OF TEL? We currently have 430 members across our convention bureau, destination marketing/tourism and economic development sectors. Over the past 12 months we have been working on better means to connect with our supporters and
“OUR GOAL IS TO SUPPORT ALL ASPECTS OF TOWNSVILLE’S DEVELOPMENT.”
we’re taking the time to engage with current and potential members to identify their needs and ensure that they are receiving the greatest benefit. There’s a perception that Townsville Enterprise is only focused on the big end of town, but our membership base is quite diverse. Our goal is to support all aspects of Townsville’s development. WHAT’S YOUR BUSINESS BACKGROUND? I was born and raised in Townsville but have spent most of my working life in Brisbane, Bundaberg, Cairns, Melbourne and Toowoomba. It was my love for this city, the lifestyle and the community that drew my family back to Townsville in 2003. I bring with me 34 years experience in banking, finance and international trade, including eight years in senior management and executive positions in Melbourne. DO YOU HAVE A VISION FOR TOWNSVILLE? I am enormously positive about the future growth and prosperity of the Townsville region. As residents, our collective challenge is to engage this growth and prosperity while preserving the attractive lifestyle that is the very essence of why people love to work and live in this city and in the surrounding area. Such a challenge is well within our capacity as long as we remain as tight and as focused as we have been for the past 20 years.

BERNIE HOCK
BUSINESS NETWORKING INTERNATIONAL (BNI) REGIONAL DIRECTOR
What is BNI? BNI is a business franchise in its own right that exists for the express purpose of helping its members gain a quantum of quality referrals through a structured and effective ‘word of mouth’ program. How many members? Currently there are more than 205 active members of BNI in Townsville spread across nine groups, or ‘chapters’. There are more than 6000 chapters of BNI around the world in 42 countries. How is BNI different from other networking organisations? BNI only allows one person from each trade, business or industry to join a chapter. In this way, no one is competing with anyone else in the group, creating a supportive cooperative atmosphere. The weekly
meetings follow a structured agenda focussing on building relationships with other like-minded people who become sales people for each other. The philosophy of BNI is ‘givers gain’, which is based on the idea that people who give to others receive what they want back in return. What range of business is represented? Everything from the financial sector, such as banking, financial planning, and mortgage broking; to trade services like carpenters, plumbers, and electricians; to business support such as business coaches, marketing, office furniture and equipment; to personal services like massage, hairdressers and florists. How specifically does BNI assist businesses? Members of BNI can get connected
to ‘referral partners’, not only in the chapter they belong to, but chapters all around the world. Because we operate on a cooperative plane, as opposed to a competitive plane, members are willing to help others or mentor others, particularly those in new business ventures. No one is an expert in every field, but BNI members can learn new strategies from each other. How do you balance being regional director with running your own business? The only thing you can’t buy is time. Balancing anything in life is based on appreciating the importance of time. Use time effectively, wisely and with leverage and everything else falls into place.

THE CORAL CRUSADER NAMED AMONGST THE THREE NATIONAL WINNERS OF L’ORÉAL AUSTRALIA’S ANNUAL WOMEN IN SCIENCE FELLOWSHIP, JAMES COOK UNIVERSITY MARINE BIOLOGIST TRACY AINSWORTH WILL GO TO ANY DEPTH TO RESEARCH LITTLE-KNOWN CORAL REEFS.
WHAT DOES WINNING THE FELLOWSHIP AND ITS $20,000 GRANT MEAN TO YOU? It’s a great opportunity and support like this can be career changing. The fellowship assists early career women in science and, as well as research funds, L’Oréal has also provided the opportunity to take part in communicating with high school students about careers in science. WHAT FASCINATES YOU ABOUT CORAL REEF SYSTEMS? Corals are described as simple, basal organisms, yet when we go out to the reefs on our beautiful coastline we find ourselves seeing amazing and highly complex structures and ecosystems. I’m fascinated by how corals create these spectacular systems, support so much diversity, and do so over extremely long periods of time. PART OF THE GRANT MONEY WILL BE USED TO INVESTIGATE LOW-LIGHT, 100M-DEEP REEFS – HOW MUCH DO WE KNOW? We don’t know very much about coral reefs in deep water habitats or how they function, grow, and survive in these environments compared to shallow water reef systems. It’s important that we understand what factors are important in sustaining these systems and the role they play in the health and sustainability of the Great Barrier Reef. 58
“HUMANS BECOME SUSCEPTIBLE TO MORE ILLNESSES WHEN THEY ARE STRESSED OVER LONG PERIODS OF TIME… WE REALLY NEED TO KNOW HOW CORALS RESPOND.”
WHAT REPERCUSSIONS HAVE YOUR FINDINGS ON CORAL BLEACHING HAD? We are still in the early stages really of understanding how some of our research findings can aid in managing coral bleaching and stress events on reefs. What we’re discovering is that coral health is adversely affected by temperature stress even before we can see bleaching occurring on the reef. We’re investigating now how this relates to the reef’s long-term health. For example, humans become susceptible to more illnesses when they are stressed over long periods of time, and we really need to know how corals respond to these sustained and frequent low-level stresses.
WHAT ATTRACTED YOU TO MARINE BIOLOGY? I love being close to the ocean and that’s why I chose to go into marine science. The career path for scientists can be very diverse. Training in science leads into science and academia, but it can also lead into science communication, public outreach, environmental protection and advocacy, government and management careers, eco-tourism, and teaching. The career paths available to people with training in science are also very global, with opportunities available all over the world.
WHAT’S BEEN YOUR CAREER HIGHLIGHT TO-DATE? Showing my daughter a coral reef and the organisms that live on reefs.
The L’Oréal Fellowship Award has been developed to support talented women as they try to balance forging a competitive science career with building a family, and ensure they continue to make their positive contribution to society.

RAMP-UP YOUR BUSINESS WORKFLOW WITH A TELSTRA USB 4G THE TELSTRA USB 4G PROVIDES DOWNLOAD SPEEDS RANGING FROM 2MBPS TO 40MBPS IN 4G COVERAGE AREAS, WHICH IS UP TO TWICE AS FAST AS ANY OTHER MOBILE BROADBAND DEVICE IN AUSTRALIA.
W
arwick Boulter is a TV commercial producer at Film Construction, a small business based in Surry Hills, which has been recently trialling the Telstra USB 4G. “The speed of a workflow for us and the need for us, in many cases, to be in two places at once is essential,” Warwick explains. “The download and upload speeds are key to us because we’re dealing almost always in big video files, so we’re trying to approve edits and we’re trying to submit edits to clients; all the while, we’re also trying to be on set shooting stuff, so we need the ability to do fast content upload and download.” Boulter has seen positive results since he began using the modem for work, which has proven to be fast, easy and convenient to use when on location. “I’ve been shooting on the northern beaches and
everywhere that we’ve shot, we’ve had the opportunity to just plug it in, and it just works,” he tells. 4G coverage is currently available in all capital city CBD areas (within 5km from the GPO) and within 3km of the town centre in selected regional areas, including Townsville. When outside the 4G areas, the Telstra USB 4G modem will automatically switch over to Telstra’s advanced High Speed Packet Access or HSPA enabled 3G network. Before the end of the year, this will extend to 50 additional locations. Telstra CEO David Thodey says 4G mobile broadband modems are now on sale and plans are underway for the first 4G-powered smartphones and tablets to hit the shelves in the first half of next year. “We’re entering a new high-speed chapter in Australian mobile telecommunications,” he states. “Telstra’s 4G

STORY CARLY LUBICZ
THE START OF A BEAUTIFUL LOVE STORY… YOU NEVER KNOW WHEN TRUE LOVE WILL STRIKE – IT COULD BLOSSOM FROM FRIENDSHIP OR BE A BOLT OF SHEER FATE. HERE FIVE TOWNSVILLE COUPLES REVEAL HOW THEY MET THEIR SOUL MATE.
MARCO DELLA VALLE + TRUDI SPENCE Marco: I was at the Sunshine Coast for a conference last year and decided to stay on for an extra couple of days at the Coolum Hyatt Regency. I was in the area called ‘The Village’ with all the shops, restaurants and clothing stores, lining-up to get something to eat. I was standing next to a friendly lady and we got talking. We had a great chat but nothing came of it. So I came back to Townsville and she went back to Melbourne and that was the end of that. However, over the next few weeks I kept thinking about her until one day, out of the blue, I got an email from her. I hadn’t given her my contact details, and all she knew about me was my first name but she’d managed to track me down and said that I’d be amazed how she got my e-mail address. As it turned out, she had been thinking about me too and one night had a dream about me, which included the name WIN TV. When we had met, I had told her where I worked and although she remembered I was in the television industry, up to that point she couldn’t remember which station. After much deliberation she decided to Google it and see what came up. So she did, and by chance that week my employer WIN Television had advertised a position and listed my email address for applications. So the first thing that popped up had my email address. So, very much out of character for Trudi, she bit the bullet and sent me an email, saying later that it was the weirdest thing she’d ever done. I think we were both cautious at first, but from there we built a friendship over email, which then turned into phone calls. We found that we had so many commonalities; for example we both had dogs called Lulu; both had step-fathers called Dennis and there was only one letter difference in our mothers’ names. One of the most amazing things was when we learnt that we were both going to Hawaii in June, but not only that – we had individually booked ourselves on the same flights, were travelling to the same islands and had even picked out the same hotels – it was like we were destined to meet in some way! We decided to meet again especially since we would be crossing paths in Hawaii, so Trudi came up here. We hit it off straight away. Very soon after I went to Melbourne to meet her family and, as they say, the rest is history! Trudi has since moved to Townsville and we’re now living together with the two Lulus. 4

GINA + ANDREW LASHMAR Gina: I was living in Sydney about 10 years ago and a friend of mine had met this really nice guy online. He was overseas fighting the war on terror and when he came back to Australia we all met him and he was wonderful. In those days dating online was new and uncommon, but her experience encouraged me to put my profile up. Within four hours I had something like 250 emails. The first one was from my future husband, but there was no picture of him – just his dog. He was in Townsville, so a bit far away, but reading his profile he sounded lovely and had the most idyllic childhood, was well-educated and close to his family. We decided to stay in contact over email and things progressed from there. After three months we bought web cams and were regularly talking, and then he offered to fly me to Townsville for a visit. When I got off the plane, on to the tarmac, I saw a guy with flowers who I started walking towards him but it was the wrong guy, so Andrew was saying, “No, over here!” He lived in Giru on a farming property and it was a bit like A Farmer Wants a Wife – after three weeks he proposed and I left back for Sydney with a one carat ring. My friends told me I was crazy and I shouldn’t throw my whole life away, but I knew it was the right thing for me. My only concern was that Andrew got along with my 13-year-old son, so he flew us both back up and they hit it off straight away – Andrew later told me he knew he’d win him over because he had a four-wheeler and a tractor! We’ve been married for 10 years now and have a gorgeous five-year-old. 5

ERIN + DALE KIERNAN
6
Erin: When I was 18 I worked at an electrical wholesale business. When I joined the boss made it clear that dating customers wasn’t acceptable, as he’d had an experience in the past that had ended badly. We had a customer who was an apprentice electrician and he would come in nearly every day and we’d chat. Then one day he invited me to his 21st birthday. I already had a party that night and wasn’t going to go to his because I didn’t know hardly anyone, but then he started texting me on the night asking where I was. There were quite a few messages being sent, but then they suddenly changed tone – the ‘real Dale’ had got his phone – it was actually his best mate and my work colleague who had been texting me all along! He asked me to come, but I’d been drinking so had no way of getting there, so he sent four of his mates to pick me up. I usually would never get into a car with four men I hardly know, but I must have had a good gut feeling! When I got to the party there was a big cheer of “She’s here!”, which was a bit embarrassing. I met his nanna, parents, brother, sisters and close friends straight away which was pretty daunting, but we’ve spent pretty much every night together since. We’ve now been married for three years and have a beautiful baby boy called Dominic. He was born nearly seven years to the day that we started dating. People say about the ‘seven year itch’ and I joke by saying we changed it up by having a baby!

Scott: Stacey used to walk past my office on her way to work and I’d always check her out. I was in my late 20s and in those days I’d regularly go to The Terrace nightclub (now Bully’s) to catch-up with friends at the bar. Stacey would be there with other people, and she’d always look straight at me. I thought she was way out my league so I never had the guts to approach her, and this pattern went on for months. Then one day my flatmate Lou Athanasiou and I went to an engagement party. Stacey was there. I still didn’t have the guts to approach her, but all of a sudden she was coming over to me! She was actually sussing me out for a girlfriend who wanted to work with me to see if I was a nice person, but that was enough to get us chatting and we basically haven’t stopped in 23-and-a-half years. We got married in 1988 and a couple of years later I said, “Remember when you used to check me out at The Terrace?” She said she’d never seen me until the day of the engagement party. When she went out she never wore her glasses – it turns out all she’d been checking out were fuzzy shapes.
SCOTT + STACEY MORRISON
SALLY + PETER DICKSON Sally: I married my best friend! We were best friends long before we got together. We were both in the air force in Townsville when we met – we were in separate units, but part of the same group of friends who used to hang around together. We hit it off instantly as friends and started doing everything together – Peter became like a ‘Clayton’s boyfriend’ and we’d always exercise, talk non-stop and have movie nights. I don’t know why we didn’t get together straight away, but we eventually hooked up by accident on one of our famous DVD nights. That was 12 years ago and we’ve been married for eight. We’ve both been married before and divorced and I think being best friends above all is the key – we’d be lost without each other.

JUDI Campbell, owner of Hills in Hollywood Townsville, together with bridal/fashion consultants Lynne Whyte and Jodi Behrendorff, recently had the enviable task of attending runway shows in Brisbane selecting the latest bridal, bridesmaid and formal designs from exclusive New York designers. Judi says: “Amongst hundreds of beautiful gowns we noticed key trends coming through for 2012, and we are excited to bring these trends direct from New York to our Townsville brides.” Judi reveals that although white and ivory remain a first choice, the blush and pink shades are also capturing interest. The fresh appeal of new laces mean vintage-inspired weddings will be even more popular, with the royal wedding influencing a comeback for the cap sleeve. Mermaid-style gowns with an embellished bodice and soft tulle skirt are perfect for giving more shape to a straight body, while showing off a curvy figure (as seen on Kim Kardashian). She says crinkle chiffon skirts with their sheer, elegant, lightweight fabric amplify the ball gown style: “A definite trend to accentuate the waist is the addition of a beaded belt, giving an elegant wedding dress that unique touch”. Styles reflecting these trends are already in the Charters Towers Road store. Sizes 0 to 32 ensure there is a gown to flatter every figure with styles to suit every wedding theme and budget. Hills in Hollywood consultants take pride in making a bride’s time in-store an enjoyable experience. Brides and bridesmaids should make personal appointments with Lynne or Jodi to see the new range first-hand.

June 4, 2011 WHO Orthopaedic product specialist Andrea Perhavec (31) and human resource manager Jaret Grant (38) WHERE Arthur Bay, Magnetic Island. RECEPTION Barefoot Food, Art and Wine, Horseshoe Bay THEME Beach, sunset, cocktails INVITATIONS Very personalised – we used a few photographs taken by good friend Jacqui Ferry of us on a vintage bicycle having a bit of fun! THE PROPOSAL A quiet trip to the Gold Coast quickly turned into a surprise luncheon and a night at the Palazzo Versace. After a beautiful lunch and some wine to calm Jaret’s nerves, we took an elevator to the top floor where he had booked a private suite filled with rose petals, candles and French champagne. GUESTS 50 THE DRESS My very clever mother Desleigh Perhavec made the dress as a gift in four fittings and I’d hate to think how many hours of hand sewing. The fabric was French silk and lace. PHOTOGRAPHER Jacqui Ferry Photography THE CAKE My wonderful friend Azra Rantucci knows what I like and made a white chocolate ganache cake – there was nothing left, not even a crumb. HAIR AND MAKE-UP Bellanova for make-up and our hair was styled by a local hair salon on the island – both travelled to Arthur Bay Beach House. BRIDESMAIDS Two, my sisters Daniella Carmichael and Kahrin Palun. Their dresses were also made by my mother Desleigh – the fabric was French silk, which was hand-dyed to create the blend of black to grey. Both sisters are petit and beautiful so it wasn’t hard to design something for them! GROOM Dolce & Gabbana suit FLOWERS Three very random and unique bouquets using orchards, disbuds, rosemary and some other bits and pieces from the beach! SPECIAL ACCESSORIES On my wedding day my friend Azra gave me a small butterfly made of feathers to add to my bouquet. Jaret wore cufflinks given to him by his nan Joan. CEREMONIAL ARRIVAL I danced down the sandy aisle to my handsome waiting husband-to-be. My nephew Drew carried the back of my dress and he could be heard saying: “Andii! Slow down please!” SPECIAL MEMORIES As celebrant Crusty Herron was coming to the part of the ceremony where he pronounced us husband and wife, the setting sun’s rays broke through the clouds and were shining all across the water in beams of light – it was pretty spectacular. Our bridal dance was a lot of fun too – we spent a few nights in fits of laughter with Brad and Lauren from Dancenorth trying to create something out of the John Butler Trio song Groovin’ Slowly. HONEYMOON Extra nights at the Arthur Bay Beach House to relax. YOU’D WISH YOU’D KNOWN… How wonderful married life is with Jaret – maybe I would have proposed to him! 13

August 8, 2011 WHO Sponsorship account manager Cassandra Mackenzie (24) and real estate principal Clinton Wallis (34). CEREMONY Willows Golf Course. RECEPTION Jupiters Townsville lawn. THEME Colourful cocktail: the wedding party was black and white and everyone else had to colour our lives. INVITATIONS All 300 were individually handmade. They consisted of a pearl-coloured envelope, which opened out into a card – each heading had a separate card. There where three hand-tied double bows of black satin ribbon on each. THE PROPOSAL Clint always brags about being an artist. I made fun of him because I’ve never actually seen him paint or draw anything. He had secretly been drawing a picture of me, which he had framed and hid under my sister’s bed. At midnight on the eve of our three-year anniversary he put it up, installed a downlight above it, turned all the lights off and got down on one knee in front of it. When I walked through the door from being out that’s what I saw. GUESTS 250 THE DRESS A white ivory A-line gown. It was very comfortable and simple, but the pleats and fold in the dress made it quite elegant. PHOTOGRAPHER Allanna Allen from MGM Photography. THE CAKE Clint’s mum Vicky and our niece Kaitlin made our wedding cake. It was a two-tiered white round cake with handmade roses and black satin ribbon to tie-in the theme. HAIR AND MAKE-UP Our hair was Moon Hairdressing and make-up was Teena Romaior from the Make-up Mirror. They both accommodated 15 of us on the day including mums, sisters and bridal party. BRIDESMAIDS I had six bridesmaids, all in floor-length black satin gowns with a sweetheart neckline. I also had a junior bridesmaid dressed in a white ivory gown with a black sash. GROOM Six groomsmen all wore black three-piece suits with white shirt. The groom and his junior groomsmen wore matching three-piece suits with a white shirt, tie and vest. SPECIAL ACCESSORIES We released butterflies at our ceremony to acknowledge our loved ones who have passed away. One of the butterflies flew straight onto my veil and never left my side for the whole ceremony. HONEYMOON We went to one of our favourite places – Queenstown in New Zealand – we both love to snowboard. We went with a group of friends, which made it all the more special. We got hit by a snow blizzard and got snowed in for five extra days of fireplaces, great beer and neverending lamb shanks. TIP FOR ENGAGED COUPLES Take notes on the finer details and make sure everyone knows what’s in your head. I prepared a runsheet for each person and outlined their involvement in the wedding. They teased me but it worked well!

PREMIUM CAKE FOR A PREMIUM DAY
Our cakes put the icing on your special day. Ask us about our wedding & specialty cakes for all occasions.
IDALIA The Precinct 4729 0707 NORTH WARD 39a Gregory Street 4772 1527 greatbread@threeloaves.com.au

SPECIALTY cakes are on the rise at Three Loaves Bakehouse since the organic artisan bakery opened its doors at The Precinct, Idalia, late last year. Following the heavy demand for homemade organic breads, European-style pastries and cakes, and fresh gourmet sandwiches (which have all sent stomachs rumbling); owners Nancy and Sean Johnson opened a second store in Gregory Street, North Ward, just three months ago to create more space for their pastry chefs to work their blissful bakery magic. Now brides, and those planning any special event, can match the cake they’ve always dreamed of with superb taste and quality. Trained extensively in the creation of premium products – even making the effort to fly a French baker out to glean his knowledge – Three Loaves Bakehouse’s pastry chefs can create an exquisite and individualised cake to suit the happy couple’s needs. It will be custom-designed to match the wedding theme, but will also take into account the tastes and dietary requirements of the guests to ensure the handcrafted masterpiece is something that is talked about for months to come. The difference with Three Loaves Bakehouse is that all products are made from scratch, not from pre-mixes, so brides, grooms, wedding guests and cake-lovers alike are assured of a premium product every time. Those set to walk down the aisle, and anyone holding an event where a notable cake is a must, should make an appointment at either of Three Loaves’ locations to discuss their specific needs.

YOU may have already booked your wedding venue, florist and photographer, but have you given much thought to marriage preparation? For many engaged couples, the lead-up to the wedding day often brings a blur of stress, panic and overwhelming expectations. Somewhere in the midst of that time, nearly-weds may feel that they’re beginning to lose sight of what the real event is – a celebration and commitment of their love for each other. After all, the marriage is what continues far beyond the wedding day! At Centacare Townsville, we provide the opportunity for couples to take some time out for each other and to explore the basic tools that form the basis of a good marriage – all in a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere. Centacare’s marriage preparation course breaks open the concepts of what marriage is and how to keep the relationship thriving for many years to come. The course is broken into three sessions: two group sessions (with other engaged couples) and one individual session. Through brief presentations and activities with your partner or the group, we examine topics such as the key ingredients in marriage, love languages, relationship cycles, stress impacts, communication, and conflict resolution. The course aims to provide couples with an opportunity to increase their awareness of what assists marriages to be happy and fulfilling, and to discuss expectations of their marriage. Due to the high demand of this course, couples are advised to enrol as soon as possible by contacting Anna Chandler at Centacare.

LOLOMA BRINGS HOME AN EXCLUSIVE PIECE OF THE WORLD Loloma Jewellers is to import a unique range of couture designer jewellery to be released locally in the lead up to Christmas.
In particular, women in Townsville have a very contemporary taste, and they demand constant product innovation.
Retail Operations Manager Joanne Coleman said their premier range, Vanelli, now included elements of south sea pearl jewellery and a new variety of coloured diamonds.
Loloma’s policy of stocking only the best products and maintaining a high standard of service and product knowledge has reinforced the company’s reputation as the industry leader in North Queensland.”
She said senior Loloma team members had recently returned from the world’s largest jewellery fair, in Hong Kong, where they were able to access new world class products for the local market.
Loloma exclusively stocks Hearts On Fire – the world’s most perfectly cut diamond.
“The extraordinary excitement the range generated in Hong Kong has certainly given us a huge expectation for its release here in North Queensland,” Ms Coleman said. “Loloma’s approach of sourcing the finest products world-wide and buying direct from the source, ensures local customers can purchase the best products at realistic prices.

Loloma recently announced the opening of a fifth store, focusing on bridal and special occasion jewellery, which will open in the new Myer Stockland in early 2012. “Las Vegas and Hong Kong opened our eyes as to where diamond trends are headed and has us already planning some incredible ranges for the new store.”

‘NO’
says Melissa Muller. “I don’t think it’s a good idea at all – you’re the ones getting married and having an ex there could make your husband or wife feel uncomfortable. I would never have invited my ex to my wedding – my husband never would’ve allowed it anyway. There would have been no wedding! I think if you’re still in contact then there are still feelings and once you have broken up you should move on. My boss invited her ex to her wedding, which I thought was strange at the time. It did go smoothly though and there were no issues, but I think people who can create that relationship are in the minority. I believe the person you’re marrying – and that relationship – is above any previous relationships and that’s why you’re marrying them! The only exception I’d make to the rule is if my ex had left me for another guy – at least my current partner would have nothing to worry about!”
BAGGAGE?
‘YES’
INTERVIEWS CARLY LUBICZ
says Tara Millard. “I think it’s something that should be judged on a case-by-case basis. I invited my ex to my recent wedding, but we dated back when I was 15 and we have since become friends. I’m also good friends with his girlfriend (now fiancé) and we all socialise together. On the other hand, I wouldn’t have invited my most recent ex (although I did invite his sister) because we don’t have the same amicable relationship. I don’t think people should invite their exes if it’s too recent; if it ended on bad terms; if they’re just doing it to make them jealous and say, “Look at what you missed out on”; or if they’re not good friends. Either way, you should always ask your fiancé first if they want your ex there – never get on your high horse and tell them you’re inviting a person, regardless of what they think. Choosing the guests should be something you do together and I made sure my husband didn’t have any issues before I sent my ex a wedding invitation”.

GUESTS 200 THE DRESS An ivory Mariana Hardwick gown with a delicate pearl encrusted bodice cut away at the hip level, complemented by a fulllayered tulle skirt, and elaborate buckled belt. I first saw it in a magazine and knew it was the one! THE SHOES Ivory peep toes featuring a Swarovski crystal bow at the front of the shoe. I loved them because they were low and comfortable to wear all day! PHOTOGRAPHER? Andrew Rankin Photography BEST PHOTO LOCATION? Queens Park THE CAKE? We had an Italian wedding cake because of my heritage – Torta Mimosa Alla Bavarese. It was a vanilla sponge cake, layered with vanilla Bavarian cream and vanilla butter-cream icing. It all got eaten! BRIDESMAIDS My sister Dana and my two best friends were my bridesmaids. They wore strapless black cocktail dresses featuring rosettes on the skirt. HAIR AND MAKE-UP Our hair was done by Beck Jane West. The make-up was my sister Dana from Bellanova. GROOM George wore a black Armani dinner suit. FLOWERS I absolutely loved what Malpara Florists did with the baby’s breath: it was really simple yet stunningly effective. ENTERTAINMENT We had two bands: Abbey Road and a Greek band for traditional Greek dancing. CATERING Michel’s Restaurant. It was served ‘family style’ with each table featuring a selection of Italian and Greek-inspired food. SPECIAL ACCESSORIES In memory of my nonna, I wore her gold wedding band on the inside of my bodice. It was my ‘something old’. CEREMONIAL ARRIVAL George organised a white and black Range Rover Sports. SPECIAL MEMORIES Having my parents walk me down the aisle to George, and listening to George’s wedding speech. Anthea Champion Daniel Hegarty

August 13, 2011 WHO Administration support co-ordinator Anthea Champion (24) and retail vehicle salesperson Daniel Hegarty (26). WHERE Sacred Heart Cathedral INVITATIONS We made them ourselves and sent them in white square boxes with the invite inside wrapped in a sheet of silver floss. THE PROPOSAL Well, Dan actually had the ring for quite some time – years actually! I put the hard word on him and he finally popped the question early one Sunday morning at home. He was on bended knee, and I accepted without hesitation. GUESTS 200 THE DRESS The bodice had a sweetheart neckline and was well-fitted with embroidered lace and crystals. The skirt was layers of satin, netting and tulle. I had an extra strap added so it was two shoulders. THE SHOES White satin pointed toe sling-backs with a small heel. They had crystal beading across the top. PHOTOGRAPHER Stephen Lane Photography BEST PHOTO LOCATIONS We went to Customs House, ANZAC Park, the old Railway Station and the back of the museum; but my favourite was an alley way off Morris Street in the city. There is a graffiti angel painted on a wall and further down they have painted a brick wall a bright blue. THE CAKE My grandmother Mary Hill, my mother Shirley Champion and my aunt Joan Roebuck spent hours one weekend slaving over a hot stove making Gran’s traditional fruitcake. They made three cakes and my sister’s friend Kiersten Behan made a caramel mud cake and iced the whole lot. It was a four-tier cake with alternating square and circle layers. TRANSPORT Three Lexus cars – one black RX 350 which I arrived in, plus a silver RX 350 and IS 250. BRIDESMAIDS Four – my sister Kara Champion was my maid of honour and three great friends – Rhiannon Boyd, Rochell Petersen and Kellie Lawry – were my bridesmaids. The dresses were modelled off a Mari Goulay-style gown, but were all hand made in Bali. GROOM The groom, groomsmen and pageboy all wore grey pinstripe suits, with Dan wearing an ivory vest and tie and the rest of the men wearing the grey vest and purple tie. FLOWERS My bouquet was a teardrop arrangement and the bridesmaids were a posy style; all made of white and silver moon roses, and dark purple lisianthus. RECEPTION Townsville RSL CATERING As we had a large wedding, we opted to have platters served to all of the tables with a variety of foods – it was incredible. HONEYMOON Two relaxing weeks in Kuta, Bali. TIP FOR ENGAGED COUPLES As everyone says, enjoy the day! It goes way too quickly and don’t sweat the small stuff. No one is going to know if something is not completely right.

August 13, 2011 WHO Insurance broker Emma Gamble (25) and IT technician Scott Busby (31). WHERE Poolside at Jupiters Townsville for the ceremony and reception. INVITATIONS They were purple ‘pocket’ invites and handmade by Scott and I. The colours were purple, silver and white and featured ribbon and diamantes. THE PROPOSAL We often take our dogs to Saunders Beach for a run, so it was like any other day for me. We were walking along the beach with the dogs, when I turned around to see Scott on bended knee. We had lunch afterwards at a beautiful restaurant to celebrate. GUESTS 40 THE DRESS A strapless white satin gown designed by Mori Lee. It consisted of Swarovski crystal beading, pearls and a chapel train. THE SHOES From Novo Shoes – an off-white colour with pleats. PHOTOGRAPHER Roy Leigh Photography BEST PHOTO LOCATIONS Queens Gardens and Castle Hill THE CAKE Our cake was beautiful. It was two-tier and consisted of chocolate and white chocolate mudcake. We got our cake topper personalised from overseas to look like Scott, me, and our two dogs. HAIR AND MAKE-UP Our hair was styled by Lisa Williams with the assistance of my maid of honour Lexie Currie, who is also a senior hair stylist. The two girls had a braid that swept to one side with loose curls. I had an up-style, with a chignon on the side. Cheree from Urban Miss Make-up did our make-up. GROOM A black suit, white shirt and black tie from Roger David. FLOWERS My bouquet consisted of white lisianthus, freesias and roses, with a few lilac lisianthus. The girls were similar, but had dark purple and lilac lisianthus and freesias. Scott and his groomsmen wore a single white rose. ENTERTAINMENT DJ Spaghetti did a great job in our ceremony and got everyone up and dancing for our reception. He met any request and kept the dance floor alive! CATERING Jupiters provided a three-course alternate drop meal – a mix of beef, pork, seafood and desserts. CEREMONIAL ARRIVAL The girls and I stayed at Jupiters the night before the wedding and got ready in our room on the day, so we didn’t have far to go! SPECIAL MEMORIES There are many, but most of all being able to spend the happiest day of our lives with our closest friends and family. HONEYMOON Allawah Retreat in the Atherton Tablelands.
