GLAMMED-UP FOR GOOD
ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE Let’s just stop for a second and think about that... Forget half full, I’m one of those cup overflowing sort of people. I used to feel guilty about being ‘lucky’ until my wife reminded me that the harder I worked the ‘luckier’ I got. And I’m ‘lucky’ that my work is about creating something tangible everyday so my satisfaction tank gets refilled. But like all of us at my age the big question now is “do I really need more?”. In the headlong rush to get all those material status symbols - house, new car, clothes, watch, another car, bigger house, eight watches - once we get them we quickly devalue them. We don’t take a moment to stop and smell the leather interior. A few years ago someone told us about the phrase - Attitude of Gratitude. Being thankful not only for the material things you’ve acquired but, more importantly, about the lives we have and the people around us at this moment in time. We’re only here once (unless you’re Henry Ford apparently) so let’s appreciate everything we are and have and enjoy it! My new mantra is ‘Health is the New Wealth’. Which is a nice segue into mentioning our big 6 page story this month called ‘My teenage years in the...’. We all had a chuckle or two in the office over some of the memories these interviews brought back to those of us who were there at the time. You might know the songs and the fashions and even some of the old Townsville haunts.

THE SMILE DENTAL 12 FACES OF DUO
Every year DUO Magazine holds a competition where 12 local women are chosen to grace a DUO Magazine cover for a month of the year. This month we are delighted to introduce you to Mysan Lauren.
COVERGIRL Mysan Lauren Age 25 Occupation Studying Bachelor of Nursing Science and waitressing at Ribs and Rumps Where were you born Stockholm, Sweden Tell us something about yourself I really enjoy singing, I love to eat lots of delicious food and the most influential people in my life are my family. What have you got going on at the moment? Apart from studying and working, I also run – I just completed my first half marathon in the Sydney Running Festival. What would surprise people to know about you? I’m currently writing a book about my life over the past few years that challenged my physical and mental strength. I’m hoping to inspire/encourage other young people to see the positives in everything life decides to throw at you. MAKE UP DANA ZOLLI – BELLANOVA As Mysan had such beautiful skin I didn’t need to use much foundation at all. I started with Youngblood loose mineral foundation in warm beige and set it with the translucent hi-def powder. I applied sundance bronzer to contour her face and give her a warm glow. On her eyes I used crushed mineral eyeshadow in Alabaster as a base then crushed mineral shadow in Tourmaline over her eyelids. I lined her eyes with black Smiink liner on top and finished with 3 coats of mascara. On her cheeks I used Youngblood crème blush in Taffeta and to finish on her lips I used lipstick in Rosewater. HAIR MONIQUE JONES – CAPELLI HAIR GALLERY Mysan’s hair was prepped using a classic GHD styler to create movement and body. A soft bristle brush was then used to backcomb the hair to give maximum root lift and a firm base. Her hair was then pinned into place creating a classic chignon with the top layers sweeping over to form a twist. The sides were then pinned into the back section forming a pin curl shape at each side of the chignon. A generous spritz of Loreal Professionnel Infinium fixing spray and Crystal Gloss to finish. OUTFIT AVANTI THE FASHION SALON Trelise Cooper Daisy Chain ‘Belle Tower’ dress $799. 10 DUO MAGAZINE OCTOBER 2012 duomagazine.com.au

horoscope
Sagittarius
22 NOVEMBER – 21 DECEMBER Life can be tough. Still, we must all assume that better times lie ahead. Lucky for you, the planets do too. Your professional standing is in line for a boost, with opportunities coming from unusual sources. Indeed, being in the right place and making the right contacts are important ingredients to current success. Mix business with pleasure.
Capricorn
23 OCTOBER – 22 OCTOBER
23 OCTOBER – 21 NOVEMBER Should October finalise a chapter in your life, take stock and follow up with positive action. If you need to make a break, quit that dead-end job or stand up to troublesome individuals. And there’s much to be said for being in the right place at the right time. Mind you, it’s not always luck. It’s often prior knowledge that gets you there. So stay attentive.
What does OCTOBER have in store for you? Astrologer Tanya Obreza has these predictions...
Libra
Scorpio
Librans prosper when pushed to the max, which is what the planets plan for you this month. To compensate, you’re blessed with almost unlimited potential. But we rarely get something for nothing, so don’t be complacent. Although you may be riding great waves of optimism, the currents can become unpredictable – so pay attention to small details.
Pisces
19 FEBRUARY – 20 MARCH If you’ve felt overburdened with responsibilities in recent times, the planets lift your mood this month. Expect a busy social scene and an equally agile love life. With finances also improving, you’re not averse to the occasional spending spree. No surprises, then, if loved ones benefit from your generosity. Travel if you can.
Taurus
Aquarius
Aries
Gemini
21 MARCH – 20 APRIL If you’re feeling restless and drumming your fingers for action, October should supply it. In other words, you have planetary permission to prosper and enjoy. This extends to the romantic arena too. An irresistible magnetism keeps love on its toes, and don’t be surprised if someone’s eager to grab your exclusive attention.
14 DUO MAGAZINE OCTOBER 2012 duomagazine.com.au
22 JUNE – 22 JULY It’s not a time for sitting on the fence. A hard ask, because at the moment it seems that every decision leads to yet another promising possibility. Stop procrastinating Cancer, and choose your direction wisely. Some may feel the need for private retreat. For others, however, an entanglement from the past disrupts the present.
Leo
22 DECEMBER – 19 JANUARY If others try to bulldoze your sensitivities this month, there’s no guessing where it will lead. Some Capricorns will choose to play down tensions, while others let rip. Couples bored with routine either look to re-ignite the spark or seek affection elsewhere. But if you want your relationship to survive, no power games please – keep lines of communication open.
20 JANUARY – 18 FEBRUARY It doesn’t matter whether you focus current attentions on travel, moving house, career or love – you can expect some positive changes. Some say you’re impatient. Possibly, but only regarding the trivialities of life. The strong resolve you’ve had to call on in recent times will now make you much more confident. You won’t be disappointed.
Cancer
21 APRIL – 20 MAY October offers you a course in patience. You may have to deal with those who feel that they know more, and better, than you. Some people just can’t see when their interference is neither constructive, nor welcome. Luckily, you now have planetary approval to show them the door. If subtlety goes unnoticed, make your message loud and clear.
21 MAY – 21 JUNE It’s a Gemini kind of month. The cosmos is on the move, and so are you. Don’t worry too much about formalities, it’s your spirit that others will notice. Should you find yourself up against equally determined minds, stop and listen. You could actually learn from others opinions. But it’s not all work. Social invitations no longer need polite avoidance.
23 JULY – 22 AUGUST We all weave our tangled webs, and this month it’s your turn to unpick some of those messy threads. For instance, a troublesome issue that’s well past its use-by date could do with resolution. And if an old flame should suddenly re-ignite, keep a bucket of cold water handy or you’re just as much to blame if it blazes out of control.
Virgo
23 AUGUST - 22 SEPTEMBER Sharing the brighter and more affectionate side of your character comes naturally this month, and you’re more drawn towards risk and adventure. So if unexpected offers come sailing in, you’re likely to hop on board. Fortunately, instinct will help you negate any obstacles as you develop a feel for the right direction.

1 TEUSNER 2011 RIEBKE SHIRAZ (BAROSSA VALLEY)
A wine packed with the dark fruit and plummy flavours that have made Barossa Shiraz a favourite style around the world. It is my ‘go to’ wine with a homemade steak pie or really any red meat dish. Add the wine to a meat casserole or make a red wine jus to serve with your favourite steak. Then sit back and finish the bottle with perhaps, a nice cheddar.
Jenny Davis, June Pola
Gai Copeman, Donna Beningfield
2 TEUSNER 2011 INDEPENDENT SHIRAZ, MATARO
Blend: 60% Shiraz, 40% Mataro (blend varies from vintage to vintage) Kym pays tribute to the independent retailers that have helped him get to where his wines are today; this blend of Shiraz and Mataro has won a loyal legion of fans who love its expressive, savoury Barossa goodness. On the palate, it is medium-bodied in the mouth with plenty of texture and savoury verve to please the most fickle wine-lover. Do yourself a favour and try it, you will love it!
3 TEUSNER 2010 JOSHUA GRENACHE, MATARO, SHIRAZ
Blend: 58% Grenache, 32% Mataro, 10% Shiraz One of my favourite wines on my restaurant wine list, a fresh and lively fruit driven wine produced entirely free from the influence of oak. The aroma is summer berries and sweet spice and the palate is juicy and peppery with a long finish. The absence of oak gives it a soft velvety mouth feel. It is a wine that suits a number of dishes. drink STORY JOSHUA AGOSTINO | HERITAGE BAR
INDUSTRY inCIDER WHAT DID YOU DRINK 10 YEARS AGO? Chances are you were a beer drinker, a wine drinker or a spirits drinker. Starting my journey on the everchanging road of bartending around 10 years ago that was pretty much all that was offered by restaurants and bars. So men would drink beer, ladies would drink wine, and after a few they would make the change onto the harder stuff. Fast-forward to today and we have a vastly different drinking scene. For starters the RTD craze that has swept Australia’s younger drinkers has had the biggest impact on our drinking landscape, so much so iconic brands have created RTD versions of themselves purely for the Australian market all in the pursuit of a quick dollar. As a bartender, my peers and I saw this as a bastardisation of our craft and have since allowed no place for these in our bars. This disturbing trend has reached new extremes with pre-made cocktails being sold in casks at bottle shops. But this ever-expanding alcoholic palate does have an up side. The sheer number of products that have hit our bars in recent years is staggering. Everything from Absinth to Zinfandel, liqueurs from every corner of the globe and quality spirits we had only heard about or if we were lucky enough smuggled back in our luggage from an overseas holiday. THE last two years has seen one product gain enormous popularity amongst all demographics (including bartenders). Cider has hit the bar scene in a big way and you only have to look at the range available to know drinkers have embraced it. Cider has been enjoyed by the brits for a long time, there are over 300 brands on the UK market. But it wasn’t until the younger generations penchant for sweeter less bloating drinks led them to discover cider was exempt from the alcopop tax that sales in Australia began to skyrocket. Sales are up 40% from last year and there are now 118 ciders on the market up from 52 in 2010. Ciders from all over the world are gracing our bar tops and people can’t get enough. Carlton United Breweries is leading this cider revolution with a premium range of the biggest names in the cider world. FIRSTLY Bulmers original, which has been made since 1887 can be thanked for the “serve on ice” trend that has helped people discover the refreshing quality of cider that has been sought after by todays drinkers. It is now available in a range of flavours including pear and blackcurrant, which is proving a huge, hit in bars. For those of us that prefer something a little less sweet, the iconic Australian craft brewery Matilda Bay launched their own matured cider Dirty Granny, and have taken out a host of awards with it. But after all these new ciders bombarding the market the old favourite still holds its top spot in terms of sales. Strongbow, after being launched in 1970 is still the number one selling cider in Australia and has now gone beyond the legendary “sweet, dry or draught” and released three new exciting varieties that will be hitting our fridges in the next few weeks. An apple cider flavoured with strawberry and kiwi, an apple cider with mango and passion fruit and a pear cider with raspberry and strawberry. So next time you head out and you’re looking to try something a little different and a lot refreshing, keep an eye out for a cider. There is a flavour for everyone. Keep shakin, Josh

NOUGHTIES TANIA STUBBINGTON
With her teens only 10 years ago, Tania admits her musical taste hasn’t changed much and she’s still cranking up Pink and Good Charlotte; but it now tends to be on her iPod rather than a CD. Thankfully, she has moved on from brother pop sensation Hanson; also leaving bun-enhancing scrunchies and Ugg boots teamed with miniskirts and jackets well in the past. “I’d say the most disturbing thing I wore was a skirt and matching top made out of a metallic silver rain jacket material,” she tells. “Luckily I didn’t have the opportunity to wear it much because I grew up in a laid back country beachy town in New Zealand, so it would have turned a few heads!” She can remember planning school free-dress days months in advance with friends, and they’d often take an extra outfit to get changed into halfway through the day. Outside school it was all about trips to the beach with her sister and girlfriends, but Tania says the most exciting event of her teen years was meeting her future husband Jayden aged 15. He lived an hour
away in the city and would need to catch the bus to visit her, but within a year he’d moved in with the family and Tania’s parents acquired a moody teenage boy. “My parents were really good about us being together as they’d met each other at the same age, and so did Jayden’s parents,” Tania explains. “I was never much of a rule-breaker, but I think he tested their patience for a few years!” One of Tania’s biggest passions was dancing, especially ballet, and she can recall her 15th birthday particularly well, which happened to coincide with a dancing exam. “The exam was in the afternoon, so Mum said she would pay for my hair to be done in the morning as a special treat. My friends and I decided I should go the full bleached blonde, but it actually turned out yellow and gave me chemical burns on my scalp, and my face looked like a beetroot. So going into my dance exam confident with a smile on my face was very difficult looking like that! Maybe that’s what made me decide to become a hairstylist!”
NINETIES TAMMY SZIKRAI
Spending her teen years growing-up on a property in Capella (near Emerald) with six siblings and the station owner’s kids, Tammy’s memories are mainly of good clean fun in the great outdoors. “We’d go swimming in the dams – that was always a good weekend thing when it was hot,” she tells. “We’d fill up seed bags with water and turn the dam wall into a big slip and slide, and then get in trouble with my Dad because we’d wrecked the dam wall… we were always in trouble for something, but I was too scared of my parents to get into the wrong crowd.” It was difficult for Tammy to sneak into the only nightclub in town because her eldest brother was a bouncer on the door; and the one night her parents caught her drinking after her high school graduation she was grounded for weeks. She had no need to get her first car until she moved away from home to go to university – the most exciting event of her teen years (“knowing that I didn’t have to stay and marry a farmer,” she quips). The secondhand green Toyota hatchback with electric
windows was her pride and joy. “All my friends wanted to borrow it because they thought it was pretty cool too – even my ex-boyfriend asked if he could take it out on a date! He wanted to pick up this girl and thought my car was more impressive, but there was a line that had to be drawn; and that was them making out on the back seat.” In the front seat, radio blaring, Tammy was listening to Bros, New Kids on the Block, Michael Jackson, Cat Stevens and Poison. In her early teen years she would tape the Top 40 off the radio every weekend to combat her parents’ relentless country music. Her hair was a fringe combed into a quiff – inspired by Kylie Minogue (she couldn’t get enough of Scott and Charlene on Neighbours and even bought their ‘Wedding Book’). But her biggest fashion faux pas was insisting on wearing a pair of black and white striped tights her dad called ‘chicken leg tights’ with a pair of wooden clogs. “My parents hated them to the point that Mum found them and burnt them… she was devastated that I actually wore them in public,” she laughs.

EIGHTIES ROBIN RICHARDSON
It was all about rock music, the beach and big hair for Robin Richardson as a teen in the eighties. His favourite hangout spots were the Dean Park Sound Shell in South Townsville (where the car park is now); the Dalrymple Hotel and the Seaview Hotel (with a dirt-floor beer garden) where he would soak-up the likes of Australian Crawl, INXS, David Bowie, The Angels, Icehouse, Blondie and The Rolling Stones. “The coolest thing for me back then was Keith Richards from The Rolling Stones, but I still think he’s pretty awesome now,” Robin laughs. Getting his licence and driving to school solo in his parents’ station wagon is a moment etched in his mind; as was the day he swapped his white Mini for a blue Ford XC V8 panel van. “The day I bought it, me and my mates jumped in and pretty much spent the next three to four years driving around in it,” Robin tells. When he wasn’t at the beach, he and his “big 80s hair” (that he describes as “twice as big as my head”) and fluoro pink and orange socks would be frequenting Lowth’s Hotel’s (now the Plaza Hotel) Blue and Gold Bar, which was underground, then onto the Terrace Bar (now Bully’s), which he says was one of the few places in town he could get a drink past midnight. He can’t remember ever being too much of a juvenile delinquent, but admits there were a lot less rules to break. “You could still smoke and ride in the back of utes back then,” he says. “Mum and Dad let me learn my own lessons, but were always there to help when I did slip up. Or to lend me money that I didn’t necessarily pay back.”

SEVENTIES COL KENNA
BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT MANAGER
34 DUO MAGAZINE OCTOBER 2012 duomagazine.com.au
Col’s teen years were a whirl of spontaneous misadventures. He was either getting bogged at Pallarenda on Friday nights (the news of who’d succumbed to the sand spreading like wildfire the next day); embarking on ill-fated camping trips to Jourama Falls, Red Falls and Crystal Creek where they’d get monsooned on, lost, or lock the keys in the car; or being pulled-up by the police for pushing a shopping trolley containing a speared keg down Ross River Road. “The police officer pulled up beside us and told us to get off the road – he said nothing about the shopping trolley or the keg,” Col laughs. In the early teen years Friday nights were spent at The Shack (now a childcare centre on Ross River Road) where the long-haired youths in their body-tight, terry-towelling or velour shirts would gather out the front and have a furtive Marlborough or Winfield on the footpath, hurriedly stubbing it out when the parents’ cars pulled up. Later on, it was frequent parties and sneaking into the Skyview Penthouse at Lowth’s Hotel (now the Plaza Hotel). “If you passed the bouncers with an air of confidence, you could walk straight in,” reveals Col. “But you could only ever afford a couple of drinks, which you’d down while being mesmerised by the flashing disco lights.” Everyday language included ‘cat’ (someone who was either “really cool or really weak”), ‘skunt you’ (what you’d say if someone had been beaten by something) and ‘neato’ (awesome). Col’s choice of music was “anything from the Rocky Horror Picture Show” (although he admits he never actually saw the stage show or the movie), plus T-Rex, Neil Diamond, Richard Clapton, Bryan Ferry and Meat Loaf. He remembers one camping trip in particular for its reoccurring music theme: It was his 18th birthday and fell on Good Friday, but also Black Friday. Five eager teenagers packed into one Datsun 1600, but had only managed to remember a single cassette: “We had to listen to ‘Book of Dreams’ by the Steve Miller Band over-and-over, and after four days I almost got sick of hearing ‘Big Old Jet Airliner’, but not quite,” Col smiles. “I think I was more excited because it was the first time Johnno let me drive the 1600.”

SIXTIES DEIDRE WALSH
Being a teen in Townsville in the swinging ‘60s was a time of hot pants, super short miniskirts, and gently pushing the boundaries for a blonde, tall and rake-thin Deidre Walsh. In her younger teens she would spend Friday nights at the Esquire Theatre on Cook Street, North Ward, with her girlfriends. With its canvas seats and format of playing the news reels first, followed by a movie, intermission and a second movie; she would struggle to get seats in the crowd. After finishing Town High – the school where her mother kept close tabs on her as a maths teacher – she got a job at the Commonwealth Bank where she quickly gained a reputation for leading the charge on short skirts and fancy blouses. “We’d have to wear white linen blouses and skirts that came to the knee, but we’d creep them up whenever we got the chance,” she recalls. “I remember getting hauled over the coals one day for wearing a cocktail blouse to work.” Her elaborate hairstyles also didn’t sit well with staid bank management. “I would quite frequently do hair parades for Michael Nielsen’s Hair Salon and they’d often run pink colour through my hair and put it up in a big beehive,” Deidre explains. “In those days we didn’t have portable hairdryers so I had to go to work the next day with the remnants of the style.” Deidre also liked to make a statement on Flinders Street in a friend’s dark green MG sports model (swapping him her Morris Minor when his parents were in town because they couldn’t all fit into the sportier vehicle). “I thought I was pretty good and would always do a couple of extra laps before heading home,” she tells. “The challenge was getting in and out of it in a miniskirt.” Other teen activities included netball, playing poker, attending the Hotel Allen for live music nights, watching local rugby league and Saturday horse racing, and escaping to the island with girlfriends (with boys just happening to come along too, a minor detail omitted from her mother). “We thought we were pretty wild in those days, but when I look at what the young ones are doing today, I think maybe we weren’t,” she chuckles.

WHAT STARTED AS A HOBBY WILL SEE THE FASHION-FORWARD TRICIA MOLACHINO TAKE CENTRE STAGE NEXT MONTH AT ONE OF AUSTRALIA’S MOST REVERED FASHION COMPS: MYER FASHIONS ON THE FIELD AT FLEMINGTON. BUT THE PRESTIGIOUS EVENT IS THE LEAST OF HER CONCERNS – IT’S THE NINE-DAY LEAD-UP OF MEDIA LAUNCHES, CELEBRITIES, PARADES AND AN APPEARANCE ON SUNRISE THAT HAS THE STYLE LEADER METICULOUSLY PLANNING HER WARDROBE.
HAVING a degree in industrial design, Tricia Molachino has always nurtured her creative side, keeping a keen eye on emerging design and fashion trends. But, until fairly recently, she mainly considered it just that: a zealous hobby. It wasn’t until her husband commented on the strength of her research skills (Tricia can spend hours online poring over the latest arrivals from international fashion shows) that she decided to take it further. The mother-of-two has already made a name for herself within the realm of Fashions on the Field, last year winning New Zealand’s top racing fashion competition (the Ellerslie Mercedes Prix de Fashion), coming third in the Queensland state finals for the Melbourne Cup and the Gold Coast Magic Millions, and runner-up in the Cairns Ladies Day Fashions on the Field – results that have netted her hundreds and thousands worth of prizes. “We went to Hong Kong last year for a family holiday, won a cruise around Fiji, had five days at Melbourne Cup and VIP access, and won appliances like a flat-screen TV, and $4000 worth of clothes – it’s such an amazing opportunity and icing on the cake to be rewarded for something you love doing and are so passionate about,” Tricia explains. Next month she is being flown to Melbourne where she will be put-up at the Sofitel for nine nights with the other state winners while they are ferried around to their myriad of promotional engagements. Tricia says, while she will miss her children dearly (aged 6 and 8), she’s looking forward to it; although she’s expecting it will be totally crazy (Melbourne Cup day starts with a 6.30am appearance on Sunrise). “We will have to be up and ready super early, then head to the race track to change… I just hope I can stay awake the whole day!” she jokes. “The pressure is definitely on to look your best throughout the entire trip – certainly no scope for comfort clothes,” she laughs. True to form, Tricia has spent the past few months getting her host of outfits sorted, researching the latest trends as they emerge from Europe. She doesn’t have to worry too much about what to wear on the actual competition day as the guidelines stipulate it needs to be exactly the same ensemble she wore to secure her final’s place at the Hobart Cup Fashions on the Field in February. Visiting Tasmania from Townsville, Tricia wowed the judges with her fluoro pink retro-inspired outfit which saw the style siren ‘pop’ on the catwalk. “It’s so bright it may as well be glow in the dark,” she laughs. “I love to wear bright colours, but you do need to be in the right mood to wear them on the day.” The outfit comprised a pink and white dress, a jacket made by a friend to create an extra element of interest, and – while Tricia usually makes her own headwear, she was short on time, so she enlisted Louise McDonald – a talented milliner from down south. Despite the excitement, Tricia expects this will be her last year on the

competition circuit as she finds it difficult being away from the children. She will, instead, indulge her burning passion for fashion in another way with the launch of her very own label: Molachino. “I will be appealing to the over 30s, but with edgy, fashion-forward, yet age appropriate items – not too much skin,” Tricia reveals. “They will also be easy-to-wear, so you can drop the kids off at school, then head to work and out to dinner that evening and still look fantastic.” Molachino will be launched at the Carmichael Motors Mercedes-Benz Townsville Fashion Festival on October 25-27 sponsored by Casey Dentists. t home in Melbourne, the chatty Clare Bowditch is about to embark on tour for her seventh album and she and musician/producer husband Marty Brown are in a mad flurry of suds and spuds. “It’s always on the days before I go on tour that I’m in a washing and cooking frenzy… I’ve got to make sure everything’s taken care of,” she quips in the manner that only a mother of an eight-year-old girl and five-year-old twin boys would know. “It’s always chaos anyway!” It’s on the eve of her new album ‘The Winter I Chose Happiness’ being released, which is a culmination of years of research about the elusive emotion and features songs she’s been penning since 19. “It’s an album we are beyond stoked about, and hopefully it will bring the conversation and question of happiness to other people in a way that really makes their lives a little better,” Clare tells. “That’s what music’s about in a way.” Clare – who is also a journalist, writer and social commentator – read extensively, experimented herself, and had conversations with friends and experts to produce the album. “I’m an Indie musician, so it’s not traditional for people from my neck of the woods to be writing about happiness,” she laughs, first composing and singing her own songs into her mother’s tape recorder, aged three. “It was a challenge for me to have discussions like this because people immediately put you into a ‘woo woo self help’ category, but I think my music speaks for itself and tells part of the journey. Some of them are just stories I’ve made-up based on other people’s adventures, and some are mine; but I think it’s all there in the album.” Clare’s discoveries have also led her to take the inspired step of creating the Winter Happiness Summit – a series of online interviews where she quizzes an assortment of identities about happiness: what it is and how to wrangle the slippery little sucker. “I’ve had a conversation with Missy Higgins, Gotye, Stephanie Dowrick (author of Choosing Happiness) and Dr Robert Holden (founder of the Happiness Project) and what they’ve had to say is inspiring,” she tells. “The interview with Gotye was particularly interesting as we’ve known each other for many years and, in the past 12 months, he’s just had the biggest hit on the globe. So the question I’m asking him is, ‘Does that mean you’re happier now?’ Everyone says they want a massive hit and to be an internationally famous, but my question is what does that really mean? What does it feel like? What’s changed for him? That was a really fascinating conversation.” ‘The Winter I Chose Happiness’ tour will take Clare through the rest of the year and she’s excited to hear the reaction the music stirs. Beyond that, she is also looking forward to furthering her decade-long plight to help other creatives with the culmination of the global program Big Hearted Business – an online mentorship that will help right-brained people turn their skills into a long-term career. “Mentoring is something I still do and it’s something I’ll do a hell of a lot more of next year when I launch my new enterprise, but the point I like to make is that absolutely everyone is creative – you cannot be born and learn to do anything without engaging your creative facility,” Clare tells. “We now have the technology for people to directly find their audiences; we just need to ask ourselves, ‘What do we genuinely have to contribute to the world?’ – that can be challenging, but important to ask.” The ‘The Winter I Chose Happiness’ album is now available, or catch the tour on Thursday, October 11 in Brisbane. LOUISE DONALD | PRACTICE MANAGER | CASEY DENTISTS
Prevention is better than cure Dental erosion can lead to pain and sensitivity but, the good news is, you can take measures now to prevent it.
DRINKING THROUGH A STRAW CAN HELP PREVENT ACIDIC DRINKS FROM CONTACTING YOUR TEETH, BUT DON’T RELY ON THIS TO BE A MAJOR SOLUTION AS THE BEST APPROACH IS TO REDUCE THE OVERALL CONSUMPTION.
Unfortunately, dental erosion (acid wear) is being seen more frequently in the dental chair. This loss of the protective enamel layer on the teeth leaves the dentine underneath exposed, which can lead to pain and sensitivity. Every time our mouth is exposed to something acidic the enamel becomes softer for a short while and loses some of its mineral content. The most common cause of erosion is by acidic foods and drinks. Now let’s go back to school chemistry and remember the pH scale! Any foods or drinks with a pH below 5.5 can trigger dental erosion. The most frequent drink triggers are soft drinks, fruit drinks, sports drinks, wine and beer. We are all guilty of these pleasures, however prolonged and regular consumption can damage the teeth. Drinking through a straw can help prevent acidic drinks from contacting your teeth, but don’t rely on this to be a major solution as the best approach is to reduce the overall consumption. Drinking still water is best for the teeth and milk helps to neutralise the acids in our mouths. For food, snacking on sugary or highly acidic foods throughout the day will put your teeth under constant attack. Are you one of those people who have a bag of lollies hidden in your office drawer? It is best for your teeth to eat these in one go or after a meal rather than in between. Other sources of erosive acids can come from high exposure to chlorinated swimming pools and gastric acid.

One of the physical signs of dental erosion is the change in colour of the teeth along the central incisors. The biting edge of the teeth will become transparent. The teeth also change in shape, exhibiting a broad rounded concavity. The gaps between teeth also become larger. Other signs of dental erosion include sensitivity to hot, cold and sweet foods. This is due to the dentine being exposed as the enamel has eroded. What can we do to minimise the risk of dental erosion? Chewing gum and rinsing the mouth with water after anything acidic can help to stimulate saliva. Saliva acts as a buffer, helping to dilute and clear any potential erosive agents from the mouth. Brushing your teeth at least an hour after will also allow your teeth time to build up their mineral content again. Brush at least twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste – using a hard-bristle toothbrush or scrubbing at teeth will cause dental abrasion. The hygienist will also be able to test the pH level of your saliva and make sure enough saliva is being produced. Your hygienist or dentist may also recommend Toothmousse, which is calcium phosphate, to aid remineralisation. Regular visits to the hygienist or dentist can help as they will detect the early stages of dental erosion. For further information on preventing and managing dental erosion, make an appointment with Casey Dentists’ dental team.

GRANT COLLINS I AUDIOLOGIST I CLARITY HEARING SOLUTIONS
Flying with children – Part 2 Many children experience discomfort when flying due to middle ear pathologies. But there are some simple steps you can take to make it a peaceful flight for all.
THERE ARE SEVERAL THINGS THAT CAN BE DONE BOTH BEFORE AND DURING FLYING THAT CAN ASSIST CHILDREN WITH OPENING UP THE EUSTACHIAN TUBE AND PREVENTING DISCOMFORT.
As discussed in last month’s issue, children under the age of one are very susceptible to middle ear pathology, particularly Eustachian tube blockages that allow the middle ear cavity to depressurise during changes of atmospheric pressure. When the Eustachian tube is functioning properly it opens and closes to changes in pressure while flying and you get the popping sensation in your ears as you ascend and descend. For children with Eustachian tube blockages however, the middle ear cavity is not depressurising at the same rate as the cabin. The ear drum is being sucked in at extreme pressure, which can cause severe pain or even a perforation. To give you an idea of the amount of pressure that can occur within a middle ear cavity, take an empty water bottle onto a flight and screw the lid on just before you leave. When you arrive at your destination and look at the bottle you will see it has sucked in on itself significantly and you hear a hiss or a pop when you open it. If the pressure can do this to a tough substance like plastic, imagine what it is doing to the eardrum. There are several things that can be done both before and during flying that can assist children with opening up the Eustachian tube and preventing discomfort. Firstly, look for the warning signs that might suggest there could be blockage and make preparations before and during the flight. The most obvious warning sign is if your child has a cold, sinus blockages or any other respiratory symptoms.
If your child is showing these signs and is old enough, the first thing you can try both prior to and during the flight is to use saline-based nasal sinus sprays. These can wash away allergens sitting at the entrance of the Eustachian tube that may be causing the swelling and subsequent blocking. Another strategy that can be used again both before and during the flight is to get your child to blow up balloons both with their mouth and their nose. The pressure created by blowing the air can be enough to force the Eustachian tube open and allow depressurisation. Further help can be achieved by chewing lollies or gum while ascending and descending as jaw movement can also unblock the Eustachian tube. For babies and children too young for the above strategies the best thing to do is breast or bottle feed them while ascending and descending. Again the jaw movements and the sucking can assist with the depressurisation. If your child has a significant history of ongoing middle ear pathology or you have any concerns about future travel then you should discuss this with their doctor. If a significant amount of flying is to be done, such as overseas travel, they may perhaps look at a referral to an ENT for a set of grommets. A grommet is a ventilation plug that sits in the eardrum allowing the middle ear cavity to depressurise through the grommet rather than through the Eustachian tube.

Low back pain affects your sleep quality Have you ever suffered from low back pain? Chances are, yes.
A BED THAT IS TOO FIRM WILL ELEVATE THE HIPS AND SHOULDERS, CAUSING THE SPINE TO SAG IN THE LOWER BACK REGION.
1. Jacobson B.H. Wallace. T & Gammell, H. (2006). Journal Chiropractic Medicine 5(4) 128-134 2. Jacobson BH, Gemmell HA, Hayes B.M. Ahana TS. Manipulative Physio Therapy 2002.25 88-92
A recent study1 found that: 25% of Australian adults suffer from low back pain 67.7% suffered within the last year 80% had experienced low back during their lifetime Low back pain can affect your sleep. Low quality mattresses and poor sleeping posture may cause pain or aggravate existing lower back pain. A proper mattress can help alleviate any symptoms and eliminate tossing and turning, resulting in a restful, comfortable and restorative sleep. Research2 shows that a new mattress provides sleepers with significant improvements including: 70.8% in sleep comfort 62.0 % in sleep quality 55.3% in back pain 50.7% in spine stiffness Sleep is the time when our body restores and heals. Spinal health affects your sleep quality along with the type of pillow and mattress you sleep on. You may need a new mattress if: • You wake up with stiffness, numbness, aches and pains • Your mattress is 5-7 years old • Your mattress shows signs of overuse (it sags, has lumps, etc.).
For proper support, we recommend mattresses from the Sleepmaker Collection which support the body at all points and keeps the spine in a neutral position. The Chiropractors’ Association of Australia (CAA) has long recognised the importance of the relationship between your spine, your mattress and your health. A bed that is too firm will elevate the hips and shoulders, causing the spine to sag in the lower back region. Similarly a bed that is too soft can cause localised pressure on the spine which can lead to fragmented sleep and long term health problems. The Sleepmaker Chiropractic Collection sold exclusively at Sleepy’s is the only range designed in conjunction with, tested and approved by the CAA. Chiropractors are wellness experts and can assist you with nutrition, exercise and other factors that may be reducing your ability to get a good night’s sleep. Dr. Jarschke assists patients daily in managing lower back pain through her extensive chiropractic education. Call 4779 1604 or visit wellspringchiropractic.com.au for specialist advice on how to get straight to sleep, including mattress and pillow selection, sleeping posture and spinal health.

MEGAN FLUX I OWNER I FIRST THINGS FIRST WELLNESS CENTRE
Attention Type 2 Diabetics Type 2 diabetes can wreak havoc with your health, but there are steps you can take to control and even reverse it.
SUPPLEMENTS SHOULD NOT REPLACE ANY OF YOUR MEDICATIONS BUT CAN AID IN CONTROLLING AND REVERSING TYPE 2 DIABETES.
Having uncontrolled diabetes can lead to dozens of health complications including heart disease, circulation problems, sexual dysfunction, blindness, infection and poor wound healing and of course the risk of the dreaded “C” word cancer. However, there are steps you can take to control and potentially reverse your diabetes and, guess what, it is all up to you. Exercise regularly: Exercise for diabetics should be short and sweet – even 10-15 minutes a day of intense exercise will enable you to reap the rewards. This type of light exercise will elevate your heart rate quickly and get that blood pumping to help to speed up your metabolism and keep those blood sugars in check. You have probably already heard this from your doctor and everyone else but it is a must if you want to control and potentially reverse your diabetes. Eliminate bad carbohydrates: This is one of the best ways to keep your blood sugars normal and prevent large fluctuations in your numbers (blood glucose testing). When you eat foods that increase your blood sugars dramatically it causes inflammation to occur in the body. Inflammation is linked to almost every major disease – cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer’s… so it makes sense to keep inflammation to a minimum. Effective diabetic management also requires reasonable weight control. Previous studies from Health Schools Australia have shown it is beneficial to be on a low-carb Ketogenic diet. In addition to decreasing body weight
and improving glycaemia, low-carb Ketogenic diets can be effective in decreasing anti-diabetic medication. There are food programs available that address complex carbohydrates and focus on getting your body into ketosis, a state where your body burns stored fat for energy and the kilos drop off. Take supplements: Supplements should not replace any of your medications but can aid in controlling and reversing Type 2 diabetes. Supplements to consider taking include krill/fish oil as it protects against inflammation; multivitamin to fill the gaps where your diet leaves off; cinnamon for blood sugar control and chromium to improve the body’s insulin sensitivity. Most people don’t get enough fibre in their diet either, so it’s important to take a fibre supplement if required. Fibre helps with digestive healing, lowering cholesterol, can prevent overeating and slows the digestion of carbohydrates meaning no blood sugar spikes. Not getting enough vitamin D has also been linked to poor blood sugar control. Vitamin D plays an active role in the pancreas, which of course makes insulin. Get more sleep: Being sleep-deprived wreaks havoc on your body. When you sleep you enter a state of healing, recovery and rejuvenation. Your body repairs tissues, resets your mind and nerves and does hundreds of the tasks all while you rest. Sleep deprivation might seem like the norm these days but it can cause everything from depression to weight gain and heart attacks.

Makes 4 big serves
Chicken with Peppers
3 large peppers (capsicums), 2 red and 1 yellow 1 × 1.3 kg chicken, skin removed, cut into 8 or so pieces 10 whole garlic cloves, unpeeled 3 fresh bay leaves 3 rosemary branches 100g good black olives 4 tablespoons olive oil Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F/Gas 4). Halve the peppers, remove the seeds and chop each half into about 4 rustic pieces. Put in a 30 × 23cm casserole dish and add the chicken, garlic, bay leaves, rosemary, olives and olive oil. Season with salt and pepper and turn it all through with your hands. If it really is too tight to turn, mix in a large bowl and return to the dish. Cover with the lid. Put in the oven and bake for about 1½ hours or until the chicken is cooked through and soft and the peppers are gorgeous. Take the lid off and bake for another 20 minutes or so to give some blush to the chicken. Serve warm, with bread. Bread here is essential. If the skin of the peppers is starting to come away and it bothers you, just slip it to the side of the plate.

“If you love peppers, you will love this. It looks like it almost cooked itself and came right to your table. It is perfect in summer when peppers are ripe and at their best. You can just pile all the ingredients in, put it in the oven and then lie down and read a book. There is nothing else to do.”

recipes 3 tablespoons olive oil 1 onion, chopped 2 garlic cloves, chopped 1.2 kg minced (ground) beef ½ teaspoon chopped oregano ½ teaspoon chopped thyme 1 bay leaf 250ml red wine 500ml tomato passata (pureed tomatoes) 250 ml water 200g frozen peas 450g rigatoni pasta 150g thinly sliced ham, torn up 250g (9 oz) mozzarella
Pasta Al Forno Siciliana
Heat the oil in a deep frying pan and sauté the onion until golden. Add the garlic and sauté until it smells good, then add the minced beef. Brown the beef over quite a high heat, stirring often to break up any lumps. Stir in the oregano, thyme and bay leaf, and season with salt and pepper. Stir through the wine and when that has been absorbed, add the passata and water. Cover and simmer for an hour, stirring now and then. It must be a lovely loose ragù, so add a little water towards the end of cooking if necessary. Toss the peas in and remove from the heat. Preheat the oven to 190°C (375°F/Gas 5). Bring a large pot of salted water to the boil and cook the rigatoni to a couple of minutes short of the instructions on the packet. Drain. Scoop a couple of ladlefuls of the ragù onto the bottom of the dish. Add half the pasta, pressing it along to level it. Ladle over half the remaining ragù and top with all the ham. Scatter half the mozzarella over, then follow with 2 tablespoons of parmesan. Now add the rest of the pasta and press it down firmly. Scrape out the rest of the ragù over the top. Scatter the remaining mozzarella and parmesan over. Bake for 20–30 minutes, until it is a bit crusty on top here and there, and golden around the edges. Scoop out portions and serve with extra parmesan.
“This is what my Sicilian friends have for Sunday lunch. Traditionally, there are larger chunks of meat in the ragù, along with sausage and sometimes slices of boiled egg. It’s normally followed by a crumbed meat or chicken cutlet and green salad. They say the lettuce is always there, one way or another. You’ll need a 6 cm high, 30 × 22 cm baking dish.” DUO MAGAZINE OCTOBER 2012 duomagazine.com.au 59

CHATTERBOX ZIPS IT FOR A DAY
Shh, no speaking in the name of charity
THERE WAS MUCH SNIGGERING AND EYE ROLLING AS I DISCUSSED HOW TOUGH IT WOULD BE ON THEM NOT TO HAVE MY WISE COUNSEL AVAILABLE ALL THE TIME.
Well, thank God that’s over. When I turned 25 I made the startling admission that I was no longer a child and I should grow up. So, I spent the next two weeks being serious at work, not telling jokes or making mischief. At the end of those two weeks, I sat down and realised that I was miserable and it was just not me to be like this. Fast forward to 2012 and an email from Verena Coombe from the Endeavour Foundation asking me to be an ambassador for the Chatterbox Challenge – a fundraising drive to raise awareness of people living with a disability and some much-needed funds. The challenge was that I could not speak for an entire working day. I asked how it could be a Chatterbox Challenge if you didn’t speak. They told me it was a challenge to someone who was a chatterbox!! Well, I never!! I asked Linda about it, but she went straight to Sportsbet to see if she could start a market and bet against me – they weren’t taking bets. My office was very supportive – almost too supportive. I’m not the best with technology and don’t know how to use the intercom on the phone. I just yell “Karen!”, or the like. So they were all very keen to have me take the challenge. There was
much sniggering and eye rolling as I discussed how tough it would be on them not to have my wise counsel available all the time. I catch my staff exchanging eye rolls at some of my suggestions and this was no different. So I agreed and we set a target to raise $2,500 on Friday 14 September, the same day that Senator Scott Ryan was to be in town to TALK with small business operators. The same day I was guest SPEAKER at a Rotary lunch and chairing my DISCUSSION Club later. To the people we met, I say thank you for asking me how I was going and smiling knowingly. To the café operator and her husband who came out and asked “is it true, you’re not allowed to speak?” I say thanks for nothing. Complaining about my handwriting and my constant texting (to participate in the conversation) is no way to curry favour. To the people in Stockies, thanks for your concern as to the wellbeing of the ears of the people around me. I made it through and we raised just over $3,000. Linda and my staff want me to do a week next time. The thing to remember is, I could talk any time I wanted. People with a disability don’t have the option to jump in and out of their lives.

MOVING HOUSE WITH CHILDREN? Here are some tips on entertaining kids while you pack and move
BE SURE TO GO THROUGH THE OLD HOUSE AND SAY ‘GOODBYE’ OR TALK ABOUT FAVOURITE MEMORIES OF DIFFERENT ROOMS BEFORE YOU LEAVE.
The inevitable has happened, you are moving house. You now have the not so enviable job of packing up everything you own, sorting, boxing, labeling, stacking, trucking and unpacking. Moving house is right up there with death and divorce as far as stress levels go! Now lets add in a couple of kids or more into this mix, who are eager to help, yet make it take three times as long. Here is some tips and activities to keep them entertained on moving day and out from under your feet. Stock up on some new activity books, stickers books, pencils, and create a space in a corner when you are supervising the packing for them to create a ‘cubby’ and they will become busy with all their own ‘stuff’. Let your kids pack their own boxes of toys. When packed and taped, get them to colour/decorate the boxes with pens, and lots of colourful stickers. Pack their favourite books on the top, so they’re easy to find at the other end.
60 DUO MAGAZINE OCTOBER 2012 duomagazine.com.au
When it comes to packing all the boxes in the van, set up a few ‘spectator’ chairs on the footpath, to keep them out from under your or the removalists feet, complete with snacks and camera to take photos of the move. A checklist of items for them to spot going into the van is a great idea! They tick them off as they spot them. Put their boxes of toys and stuff in last so that they are the first boxes unloaded. When you get to the other end, unpack their toys first and don’t worry too much about unpacking everything, try to organize their bedroom and essentials first. Be sure to go through the old house and say ‘goodbye’ or talk about favourite memories of different rooms before you leave. If you have a favourite plant or flower, dig up one and pot it and take it with you to the new house. First night there, don’t stress about unpacking. Go have a favourite meal and an ice-cream, there’s always tomorrow.

THE LEADERS AND PEOPLE OF ACTION IN OUR CITY DON’T WAIT FOR THINGS TO HAPPEN – THEY MAKE THINGS HAPPEN.
Townsville has always been a city on the move and will go on being so because we have developed a culture of selfreliance and self-determination. The leaders and people of action in our city don’t wait for things to happen – they make things happen. To ensure we sustain that strong and resourceful leadership for the future, Townsville Enterprise is approaching the second year, and the second round, of the North Queensland Emerging Leaders Program. Renee Turner, TEL’s Strategic Projects Coordinator, directs this wonderful program to prepare quality community leaders for the future. Another TEL Team Member who is passionate about Townsville and its young people is Jo Marks, our Indigenous Employment Project Officer. Jo’s resolute objective is to connect the Townsville Indigenous community with the local business community in order
to create quality employment opportunities for our Indigenous youth. Ten motivated young indigenous people have been selected to join the TEL Indigenous Youth Ambassador Group. Career aspirations are developed and realised by linking group members to key industry leaders through mentoring activities. Every day Townsville Enterprise’s magnificent volunteers do just that. Through our Volunteers Program led by TEL’s Visitor Services Executive, Narelle Burns, our volunteers service more than 50,000 visitors through the Visitor Information Centres each year, promoting member attractions, activities and accommodation in the North Queensland region. Our volunteers all possess a passion for the Townsville Region and a genuine desire to greet visitors with a smile and a warm welcome. They are critical elements to the successful promotion and development of the tourism industry in our region. DUO MAGAZINE OCTOBER 2012 duomagazine.com.au

ADVENTURE OF A LIFETIME
THE VOLUNTEER EXPERIENCE THAT WILL HELP OTHERS, AND IN THE MEANTIME, CHANGE YOUR LIFE.
A
medical ship sailing from Townsville to Papua New Guinea has captured the imagination and hearts of many over the past three years. YWAM Medical Ships (YWAM MSA) is seeking to actively develop communities by addressing the health care and training needs in Papua New Guinea (PNG). It works in conjunction with AusAID’s commitment to the UN’s Millennium Development Goals and the PNG National Health Plan. Peart said, “the communities we visit are extremely isolated with very limited resources and services available to them,” Since 2010, YWAM MSA has provided 93,354 training and health outcomes in PNG; including primary health care, childhood immunisations, dentistry, optometry, ophthalmology, and education in association with key stakeholders and partners. YWAM MSA volunteer and former Australian Army Medic, Wayne McMurtie, said of his time with the medical ship, “the experience both personally and professionally was just amazing. It is an opportunity to go and see places that you would not normally get to see if you were going to go and travel somewhere as a tourist, but the impact you make on people’s lives is amazing”. McMurtie says he recalls volunteering in the primary health care clinic and seeing a young boy walk in with a wound the size of a machete knife across his leg. So deep and wide was the gash that his little leg looked as if might fall off. The young boy’s condition was critical; if he had waited a few more days without treatment, he would have most likely lost his leg. The medic and trained nurse provided immediate treatment until the boy stabilised. After a few days, McMurtie and others in the medical team returned to review the boy’s condition and found him healing well. McMurtie says the experience changed his life. After his time volunteering in May 2012, he says he hopes to return to Papua New Guinea at least once a year with YWAM MSA. He also says he would recommend the experience to anyone. YWAM MSA will be conducting six 18-day Outreaches and one 7-day Outreach in 2013 and is now accepting registrations for doctors, nurses, midwives, physiotherapists, dentists, dental assistants, optometrists, ophthalmologists, scrub nurses, orthoptists and general volunteers. To find out more information about volunteering, visit www.ywamships.org.au or phone YWAM MSA’s headquarters in Townsville 4771 2123.

Remaining positive and flexible is the best approach to finding a new job
Remain positive and flexible. That’s the message I give to people who have been, or are under threat of being made redundant.
WE ARE EXPERIENCING CLOSE TO THE BEST EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS IN THE LAST 40 YEARS.
Despite what is in the media lately talking about an unemployment rate of 6.4%, TP and other leading industry bodies believe the actual rate is lower than national average and less than 5%. What this means is we are experiencing close to the best employment conditions in the last 40 years. So if there was ever a good time to be made redundant, it’s probably now. But it’s important that you use your time wisely and remain positive to get back into the jobs market as soon as possible. In fact, those receiving redundancy payments could even look at it as a bonus payment if they can gain employment quickly. So what should people being made redundant, or facing redundancy, do to give them the best chance of finding a new job? Here are my top tips: 1. Remain positive – this could be a time where you have the opportunity to get that job or career that you have always wanted. 2. Take time to update your resume – target your resume to the specific job that you are applying for and tailor your skills and experience to the requirements of that position. 3. Use your networks – friends, family and colleagues are a great way to get your name out there. Let them know you are looking and what you are looking for. 4. Get media savvy – start a profile on Linkedin and utilise other social media. Linkedin for example is specifically for business and professionals and is a great place to build
your profile. Connecting with the right people gives you the best possible chance but make sure you make the most of your profile including outlining your skills, experience and what type of employment you are looking for. 5. Research – know what jobs are out there and know your market. Townsville’s economy is diverse and robust so do your research on the industry and organisation. 6. Interview well – prepare, rehearse and be genuine in your interview. Follow up with a thank you and make sure you are always 10 minutes early. Be positive about your past work experiences and dress to suit the role. 7. Keep an eye on online job boards – check sites such as SEEK.com.au and register with appropriate recruitment agencies. 8. Remain flexible – you might not get your dream job straight away, but by taking a flexible approach, you stand the best chance of getting back into the market quickly and go from there. Remember, losing your job is not the end of the world. Look at it as a new beginning and the start of a new career path. Always stay positive. If you’re not ready to jump back into a job straight away, there are many study and training options out there to help you up-skill or change your path. It can be a difficult time but there are options and opportunities as Australia’s employment market is much better than most places across the world and Townsville’s unemployment rate is below the National average.

SELF MADE MAN
IN A RARE INTERVIEW, PROPERTY DEVELOPER GLEN MAIDMENT REVEALS HOW HE BUILT A PASSION INTO A LUCRATIVE BUSINESS. oing pre-interview research on Glen Maidment proves tricky – type the businessman’s name into Google and there’s plenty that pops up about his property development company Maidment and his major Northern Beaches-based community Sanctum Estate (and even a bit about his support of the now defunct North Queensland Fury FC) – but very little about the man himself. When we meet-up for a chat, the reason becomes apparent – he’s very reluctant to do personal interviews, preferring to let his business take the limelight while he and wife Annette keep the wheels turning behind the scenes. But Glen Maidment’s story is one that should to be told – it’s a tale of a selfmade man who has cemented his success through his unwavering love of property: a subject he once knew very little about. “I’m a diesel fitter by trade and did my apprenticeship in Moranbah, where I grew-up, went to school and met my wife – it was just a small mining town then,” Glen reveals, going on to add, when qualified, they moved to Mackay where he would work on excavators and start renovating property in his spare time. “It didn’t take long to work out that, while there was a little bit of money in renovating homes, there was probably more business opportunity in finding homes that had a slightly bigger block of land… we were able to renovate the home, subdivide and sell off the piece of land beside the house. Essentially that’s where we started out – small, one lot development.”
“THERE WAS NO REALLY BIG BLACK HOLE LIKE THERE WERE IN OTHER ECONOMIES THAT WERE ONLY SUPPORTED BY ONE OR TWO INDUSTRIES” GLEN MAIDMENT
The Maidments turned their lucrative hobby into a business in 1999 and opened an office in Mackay, also developing land all over the south-east. Glen was hooked. “I would spend so many hours of the day and night just scrolling around town planning maps and land databases looking for available residential land,” he tells. “I had a fascination with the south east and the Sunshine Coast Hinterland area, so we did some residential development there and developed in Gympie, and still to this day we are developing residential land there.”
64 DUO MAGAZINE OCTOBER 2012 duomagazine.com.au
But it was Townsville that Glen considered “the absolute destination” for a property developer, and eight years ago he made the decision to shift the focus here to take advantage of the city’s unrivalled diversity: “Even through the height of the GFC where I saw other developers really struggling, we were still – not going gangbusters exactly – but still selling,” Glen says. “And I can only attribute that to Townsville’s economy – there was no really big black hole like there were in other economies that were only supported by one or two industries.” For Glen and Maidment, the main focus today is centred on the master-planned 1300-lot Sanctum estate at Mount Low – a project that will continue to roll-out over the next 10 years. He has been heavily involved in the design of the community, making it somewhere he and his young family would chose to live. “I’m married with two young girls – a seven-year-old and a four-year-old – so I’m living in Townsville and know what my kids are chasing in terms of amenity and open space,” Glen explains. “Everyone likes to be somewhere in walking distance to a park so they can take their kids or dog for a stroll. That’s what we’re passionate about and the design of Sanctum allows every resident in the estate to have some direct and immediate access to that open space.” And Glen and his family are no different. Making a concerted effort to have time away from the office, they try to get out into the great outdoors – whether it’s playing hockey with the girls or escaping to Glen’s parents’ house at Sarina Beach (the scene of his boyhood fishing adventures). But this ‘free time’ hasn’t come totally unfettered – it’s after years of working all night and realising that he has to let go. And was also gained through one of the biggest lessons Glen’s learned in business: concentrating on what he does best. “When times are tough you need to knuckle down and concentrate on what you do well,” he advises. “It’s easy to get distracted and see little opportunities come-up along the way, but you need to ask yourself how badly you want it and whether you have time… if it’s going to cause you to take your focus away from your core business, then don’t do it.”

At home I love the traditional family Italian dishes – crumbed steak and Nonna’s pasta to name a couple. You wish… I was a millionaire! I don’t know. alling Andrew first thing on a Friday morning, he answers sounding groggy – he’s on a business trip to Perth and it’s two hours earlier. But instead of dismissing the call and returning to slumber, he good-naturedly agrees to the chat; admitting he would be hard to catch at any other hour. As Townsville Hospital’s executive director for medical services, the doctor has earned a nickname for himself amongst staff – ‘the juggler’ (a fact he discovered when an emergency department email amongst staff mistakenly landed in his inbox). “I had a laugh to myself because that’s exactly what I do – my work is pretty full-on and I’m constantly juggling competing priorities – it’s a challenge a lot of us have,” Andrew tells. But Andrew has increasingly been finding his solace away from his demanding day job doing something he first discovered when he was 12 after winning a bet with his parents. “They said I would never get a scholarship to the high school I wanted, so I said, ‘What do I get if I win?’ It turns out it was a Canon AE-1 – a pretty flash camera for a 12-year-old.” Andrew concentrated mainly on photographing rugby union (his passion before a growth problem with his hip halted him in his tracks), and still has all the negatives in a big trunk. He admits that most of his photographs during this period were “pretty awful”. Most were in black and white because he couldn’t afford the colour film and processing. During his teen years he would often comment he’d love to be “a flying doctor who took photos”, and that unlikely dream came true when he joined the Air Force. “Because of my hip issue, it got me interested in medicine and I’d always been keen on aviation,” Andrew tells. “So I joined the Air Force in Darwin where it was my job to keep everyone healthy and the
68 DUO MAGAZINE OCTOBER 2012 duomagazine.com.au
show on the road. When I was there I did a lot of exploring and – compared to the photos I took of the rugby – my photography seemed to improve a fair bit,” he laughs. But Andrew’s hip caught up with him, developing arthritis, so he left the Air Force, moving into medical management and – after he and his family spent some time in Sydney – eventually found himself in Townsville. Despite the fact he now has the capacity to use colour wherever he pleases (he can now afford it; plus there’s digital cameras), Andrew still loves black and white images and has a particular fondness for placing people in landscapes to draw a connection between person and place. It was this approach that recently saw him enter and come second in the Cotton Australia Click! Photo Competition – a national award that’s open to professional photographers as well as amateurs. “I’m by no means a professional and I’m learning all the time,” Andrew tells. “My neighbour is a great mate and is a much better photographer than me. He’s just a bit dirty on me. It’s a pretty valuable prize, even better than most pro competitions, so I have been very lucky.” Andrew nabbed a Canon EOS 5D Mark III professional camera for a photo he took at Alma Bay on Magnetic Island (Nothing Feels Better Than Cotton), which he says is a great addition to his collection. He’s frequently on the island where he and his wife own a 100-year-old beach hut that they use to retreat from the rat race. “It’s really important to have balance and outside interests beyond work,” Andrew explains. “Having this hobby has sustained me and allowed me to deal with a stressful role… and created lots of good arguments with my neighbour!”

DESIGN BY THEM INTERVIEW CARLY LUBICZ
PART OF YOUR PHILOSOPHY IS COMBINING FUN AND FUNCTION. IS THAT A CHALLENGE? NICK: A lot of designers try to design products and make it quite serious, but design can also be fun and unintimidating… we want our workplace to be enjoyable and I think that carries through into the work as well. IT PROBABLY HELPS THAT YOU HAVE KNOWN EACH OTHER SINCE UNI… NICK: Yes, we can have a really great argument, but then have a cup of coffee after and everything’s fine (laughs). SARAH: Then the arguments extend into coffee breaks (laughs)… we were talking about colours only an hour ago and colour is one of those things we constantly argue over, but in a good way; until we come up with a colour palette we both really agree on. IS THAT PARTICULARLY CHALLENGING WITH YOUR SUSTAINABLE PRODUCT RANGES? NICK: It’s huge – it’s one of the main challenges we face being situated in Australia as we are quite isolated from access to new materials… we are starting to come on-scene with offering moreand-more sustainable products, but I don’t feel like the R&D side is here as much as Europe, the US, and China. CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR SUSTAINABLE BUTTER STOOL BEING SHORT LISTED FOR THE IDEA 2012 AWARD. SARAH: Thanks! We don’t actually enter that many awards because we’re so busy and our primary focus is to get products to market and promote design to non-designers, but we did enter that one because we like that magazine and it’s a fun award to be part of. NICK: We are really happy with the Butter range – the butter stool, the seat, the wall divider… A lot of our products use this material (recycled plastic containers).
“BUT THEN TO FULFIL THAT ORDER AND PUT IT IN THE OPERA HOUSE – THAT WAS A REALLY BIG THING” – NICK
WHAT OTHER ‘PINCH-ABLE’ DESIGN MOMENTS HAVE YOU EXPERIENCED? NICK: Producing Stefan Lie’s Ribs Bench, because we really respect Stefan as a designer – he actually taught us at uni. But then to fulfil that order and put it in the Opera House – that was a really big thing. Mainly because the Opera House is such an Australian icon and yet there wasn’t much Australian furniture in there… it’s been one of the highlights of the past five years. SARAH: Especially seeing the approvals process that goes on in the Opera House – it’s very thorough and to get anything into those foyers has to be overseen by a lot of people, so we were really pleased they liked the product enough to include it. WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON NOW? NICK: We have a lot on! We are on a schedule of releasing a new product once a month for the next 12 months. SARAH: We’re working on a flat-pack Christmas tree with Stefan Lie, which is really simple and gorgeous. We have a new range called the Partridge Family that uses timber primarily as opposed to the recycled plastics of the Butter range. We’ve done a lot of timber products of late. We have the Fractal, which is a modular coffee table that breaks up into triangles that we designed for a competition, but it was so popular we decided to put it into production. NICK: We have a project in the US as well. We are custom-designing a desk system for an advertising client over there. SARAH: For some reason we are really big in Minneapolis… they are very entrepreneurial and always on the search for something different – we seem to be more popular there than here! NICK: It’s really odd… we joke that there must be a billboard or something with us on it (laughs). WHAT ARE YOUR MUST-HAVE FURNITURE STAPLES? SARAH: I’d hate to say everyone should have a certain type of product because it’s about creating an environment that reflects you. It needs to be something they are really drawn to and complements the space. NICK: Successful interiors are the ones that reflect a person’s taste and individuality and don’t look like they’ve been lifted out of a catalogue. You need to be comfortable living in the space too. SARAH: Find investment pieces that will last – even finding something old and mixing it with something new that’s really durable. It’s about building a collection of products you really value and can cherish with time, instead of having to replace them every five years according to fashion.

PLANNED TO PERFECTION ALLARO HOMES’ EXCITING NEW DESIGN SUITE LETS ONLINE USERS SEE THEIR NEW HOME COME TO LIFE IN 3D
UNDERSTANDING and using technology to its full potential in the social stratosphere is relatively unheard of in the building industry, but for local builder Allaro Homes, who this month launch their new online Design Suite it is an important tool along the home building journey. The Allaro Design Suite is free and made up of four components. These are the Allaro Pin Board, Portfolio, Check List and Homestyler, 3D Rendering Software. Allaro Homes manager John McKenzie, says the Design Suite offers online users an exciting and interactive forum to collect and share ideas for their new home – and best of all anyone can use it.

“Whether you are planning to build, one day dreaming of building or currently underway with your build, this Design Suite is a great tool,” he said. The Allaro Pin Board allows users to gather and sort their home inspirations in a secure online environment. Pins may have been captured in store with their iPhone or online and can be shared with friends through social media with a simple click. The Portfolio features an array of Allaro Homes’ designs compiled in an easy to use e-book. Users are able to view and zoom layouts, email, print and pin any designs they like to their Allaro Pin Board. The Check List forms part of a design brief and has been created to ensure cost estimates are well considered across all aspects of design and build requirements. This online questionnaire will capture the size of the home, how many rooms and what the land size and location is. This check list can be completed in just a few minutes using an online form. The fourth component of the Design Suite is the
Homestyler, 3D Rendering Software. “This is an advanced, yet simple to use tool that will allow people to have a little bit of fun, designing a new home and see it come to life in 3D,” John adds. The Allaro Design Suite offers an exciting, easy to use suite of applications that are not only fun but highly functional. This new service from the team at Allaro Homes is free and can be accessed at www.allarohomes.com.au.
$15,000 for First-Home Buyers If you are a first-home buyer there has never been a better time to build with Allaro Homes. Under the new First Home Owner Grant announced by Premier Campbell Newman, home buyers will receive $15,000 in lieu of the former $7000 when buying a newly constructed home. Allaro Homes will be able to explain this in more detail, ensuring this great saving is passed directly onto you.

A VISION OF UNSURPASSED COASTAL LIVING BUSHLAND BEACH IS THE PREMIER MASTERPLANNED COMMUNITY THAT SETS A NEW HIGH-WATER MARK BUYER enthusiasm for life at the flourishing beachside community of Bushland Beach has prompted the developer to bring forward a release of new housing lots. The release of the 20 lots is intended to top up dwindling land supplies at the masterplanned northern beaches estate, where more than 1200 lots have been sold. The latest lots are from 500 to 968sqm and are priced from $165,500 to $175,500. Clinton Trezise, from Colliers International, says the release not only helps ‘re-stock the shelves’, but means the family-friendly Bushland Beach can cater for a wider range of buyers in terms of block sizes and prices. “The available lots from an earlier release range from 629 to 1733sqm and sell from $145,000 to $225,000. Bushland’s land diversity also means that both flat and elevated sites are available.” Mr Trezise says the elevated sites capture breezes
and enjoy views that in some cases take in Magnetic Island and Halifax Bay. Listed developer, the Sunland Group, embarked on Bushland Beach in 2005 and the project, which eventually will have 2500 homes, has matured greatly over the past few years. The first stage of a 5000sqm shopping centre, which includes a supermarket, has been open for some time. Mr Trezise, who is marketing Bushland Beach with Cathy Robertson, says most of the estate’s buyers and residents are in the 25 to 45 bracket. “They range from those determined to build their first home to aspirational purchasers who want to upgrade and build their second or third home. Of course, we get our share of retirees and we also get people from the regions around Townsville who want to taste beachside living. All in all Bushland’s community is a great mix of youthful vigour and maturity. The term ‘family friendly’ fits like a glove in an estate where the beach, fishing, boating and

open space add to a very relaxing lifestyle.” Bushland Beach ultimately will have 85 hectares of parks and open space and residents with a love of fishing can use a nearby boat ramp on the Bohle River. Mr Trezise says he expects a new State Government grant of $15,000 for first-home buyers to purchase new houses will be a positive for Bushland, which in addition to housing lots has completed homes available from $399,000. “Bushland Beach offers the only opportunity in Townsville for first-home buyers to build their first home within a masterplanned beachside community.” Developer Sunland has been in business for nearly thirty years and operates along the eastern seaboard. It was developer of the world’s first Versace hotel, built the Gold Coast’s Q1 super-tower, and created Melbourne’s stunning Yve apartment building.
As the only masterplanned beachside community in Townsville, you will enjoy all the benefits of beachside living – care-free walks on the beach, boating, fishing and ocean views.

THE FUTURE OF RENEWABLE ENERGY HOW TO TURN YOUR PROPERTY INTO AN ELECTRICITY PRODUCER RENEWABLE energy including solar power is for individuals, families and commercial ventures who want to ensure a reliable electricity supply for years to come without having to worry about any price hikes. With so many panels on the market, it is sometimes difficult to choose the right one. Here is a quick checklist: are the modules suitable for the harsh conditions in Queensland with our high humidity, high temperatures and cyclone-prone areas; is the installer reliable and do they have a good track record with many years experience? Beat Bad Energy, based in Townsville, does and is a complete renewable energy company. Beat Bad Energy pride themselves on delivering a highly professional service with a personal touch. Their on-site consultations are key to ensuring product variables are considered and the energy efficiency requirements are met. They offer some of the most reliable and safe solar modules
on the market: modules by German company Q.CELLS have the strongest 60-cell module of its type globally and their panels outperform other modules at the independent Desert Knowledge Centre in Alice Springs www.dkasolarcentre.com. au thanks to Anti-PID technology, which prevents power losses in hot and humid conditions. Domestic applications such as solar panels, solar hot water and solar whirly birds are quickly becoming the new investment. The demand for these products is catching on at an incredible rate and it’s exciting times in the industry. However an area that is highly under-utilised in Queensland is the large-scale commercial applications. Think about all that space on your industrial rooftops – sides of the buildings that are going to waste could be engineered to house solar panels. Beat Bad Energy encourages each commercial venture to take the opportunity to produce renewable energy. It will reduce the cost of power bills now
and well into the future. Lifestyles are changing and the energy conscience in us all knows installing a solar system is good for the environment and a great investment for the future. The future of renewable energy is here. To find out more call us on 4728 2118. Register your interest at www.beatbadenergy.com.au or find us on Twitter and Facebook at ‘Beat Bad Energy’. Open 7am – 7pm, 7 days.
