WELCOME

TAKING A PUNT FOR ALL THE RIGHT REASONS Auctions and raffles. At this time of the year we get to make a punt with both, hopefully to support a charity. To me, it’s the perfect win/win. You get something and the charity gets your donation. How fantastic was the Townsville Hospital Foundation’s Gala Ball that raised around $150,000 for the new Children’s Ward? A brilliant example of Townsville generosity. Of course, that result wouldn’t have been possible without the benefactors who donated the prizes and the locals who gave with their hearts and wallets. Well done all. (Insert smooth story transition here.) One of my worst auction ‘wins’ (according to my wife, Stacey ) was when the Sheraton (at the time) refurbed their kitchens. Stacey was standing in front of me and obviously didn’t notice my hand going up for the complete air conditioning system with smoke extractors. I figured if we ever had a restaurant this would save us a bundle. I was beaming with joy at the fall of the hammer. She turned around and I said; “ I won it!” She instantly went from a look of blank indifference to total rage and disbelief when she realised what I’d said. It wasn’t just that I had no way of transporting it or not ever owning a restaurant that makes it the worst. It was three years later when I had to call Ken at RST and offer it to him for free if he’d take it away so we could have our carport back. The best raffle win EVER was for my Rotary Club a few years ago. We all had to sell 100 tickets but I only managed to sell one to Joan, our Production Manager. On the last selling day I realised I had to buy them all myself or face humiliation. To my everlasting shame, I bought Joan’s $2 ticket back from her. Just in case. About a week later, Ray Valdeter (then Club President) arrived at my office. I’d missed that day’s meeting when I won the main prize, third prize and the book buyers prize! I only missed out on second prize (thankfully). I very much appreciated the win but I wish I’d been at the meeting to do the right (Aussie) thing and re-donate. Anyway, the bottle of Grange (book buyer’s prize) is still in the fridge waiting for a special occasion! Things (and people) I appreciate this month: Our award-winning local restaurants, the beardies in this month’s Grooming Guide, Wirra Wirra lunches, the Cowboys (we were robbed), my Mum, Ron at New Park Suit Hire, the Townsville Hospital Foundation team (Sam, Andrea and Anita). PORT OF AIRLIE WELCOMES CRUISE WHITSUNDAYS

PORT OF AIRLIE IS EXCITED TO WELCOME CRUISE WHITSUNDAYS TO THEIR NEW HOME WITH OPERATIONS BEGINNING FROM THEIR NEW TERMINAL.

OVER THE PAST 18 MONTHS of planning and construction, Port of Airlie has become home to the most stateof-the-art passenger transit facility in coastal North Queensland. Port of Airlie Sales Manager Andrew Forster said Cruise Whitsundays’ maritime terminal was the major component in a sophisticated, allencompassing Whitsunday ‘transit hub’ also consisting of a bus and taxi transit terminal, public fuel wharf and a 176-space public car park at Port of Airlie, right on Airlie Beach’s doorstep.

12 DUO MAGAZINE OCTOBER 2014 duomagazine.com.au

“This much-needed transport facility is finally being realised and will accommodate the ever-growing local and tourist population across the region,” Mr Forster said. “While this transit hub will be the area’s major link to the Whitsunday Islands and the Great Barrier Reef for visiting tourists and locals alike, it also sees Airlie Beach as a destination in its own right.

“To make it easier, our timetable won’t change – simply replace any Abell Point Marina arrivals/departures with Port of Airlie, and Shute Harbour remains the same.”

“People staying at Port of Airlie or elsewhere in the Whitsundays will be able to step off a boat and walk right into the heart of Airlie which should be a huge boost for retailers in the central business area as well as at Port of Airlie.”

The latest addition of the cruise terminal will further reinforce the investment opportunity offered at Port of Airlie, which has proved to be a winner with buoyant sales and increased interest over the past 18 months, fuelled by buyers recognising real value in the Whitsunday marketplace.

Cruise Whitsundays Chief Executive Officer Nick Hortle said it was an exciting time for the company. “This terminal has been well over 18 months in the making and we are quite sure the local community and tourists will agree it’s an outstanding development,” Mr Hortle said. “Our guests will have a comfortable, safe and seamless experience when travelling to and from Airlie Beach, not to mention such easy access to the centre of town,” he said. “We are looking forward to welcoming people to the terminal when we start operating from there on 6 September.”

The new terminal features airport-style check in counters including baggage conveyor belts, a large café, a gift shop and custom designed jetties to allow for easy access on/off the boats.

Analysis of sales data provided by PRD Whitsundays over the last 18 months has revealed that the Port of Airlie has comprised 13% of total market share with over $30 million in sales. “I’m sure history will show that the partnership between POA and CW to be one of the most exciting and economically beneficial developments the area has seen in recent years. Airlie beach really does become the destination not just the gateway. We look forward to a long and rewarding partnership,” Mr Forster said.

HOROSCOPE

October 23 SEPTEMBER – 22 OCTOBER

News is you’re popular, Libra – and there’s no harm in saying so. It can only add to the confidence you already have. Your charm can disarm almost anyone, so if you’re keen to push your luck, this birthday year gives you the chance of winning almost anyone over. And with much of the cosmos on side, extravagance goes hand in hand with an active love life.

Scorpio

Sagittarius

Capricorn

23 OCTOBER – 21 NOVEMBER

22 NOVEMBER – 21 DECEMBER

22 DECEMBER – 19 JANUARY

20 JANUARY – 18 FEBRUARY

You have felt confined for far too long, Scorpio. In recent times, very little has come easily. But that was then. Mars now sidles on side, cheering you on. This power planet expands whatever it touches – so be willing to ‘go big’ whenever the situation dictates. One warning: ‘expansion’ can also mean excess. Keep both diet and spending habits under control.

Few can match your amazing love of life, although you may have felt grounded lately. October lets you dust off those adventurous wings and fly. You diversify your social life and, better still – your love life. And should you be offered a more hedonistic lifestyle – jump at the chance, Sagittarius! This kind of fun doesn’t come around too often.

As ever you’re sharp as a tack, Capricorn – so here’s another month when little sneaks past you. But this kind of awareness can be a bane as well as a blessing. When constantly on full alert, you rarely get the chance to relax. So try to occasionally slow the pace and take some time out for some plain old fun. Enjoy the spring sunshine!

The world’s getting smaller, but it can still seem like a big, lonely place when you start to question how much you really have in common with those around you. Some planets are in the same boat right now, feeling very distant. Perhaps it’s time to find new solutions to old problems – there’s little point sticking to the tried and true if it’s not working.

Pisces

Aries

Taurus

Gemini

19 FEBRUARY – 20 MARCH

21 MARCH – 20 APRIL

21 APRIL – 20 MAY

21 MAY – 21 JUNE

October gives Pisceans plenty to think about. But there could be areas where the planets encourage an overhaul. For instance, a quick look at spending habits probably reveals a history of debt. There may also be some dubious financial deals on offer, and you – more than most, know that there’s no such thing as a free lunch.

Whether in business or pleasure, it’s all systems go! Expect a month of progress and passion. The Sun revives your quest for fame and fortune. Just don’t place too much faith on flimsy promises. Should a secret be exposed, there’s no point covering up what’s already in the public eye. Make sure it’s only your naked ambition that’s on show.

Use this month for creativity, rather than conflict. Yours is a powerful inner strength but others will value your support right now, not displays of authority. In romance, expect a merger of love and intellectual interests. After the 23rd, the Sun fires up finances. Start a new business or a new job. Nothing to lose and much to gain.

October finds you focusing on health. With the Sun’s transit through your fitness sector, it’s time to stop burning the candle at both ends. Take time to address health issues that you have ignored for too long and concentrate on improving diet and exercise regimes. Treat your body like a temple, Gemini – not a trash can.

Cancer

Leo

Virgo

22 JUNE – 22 JULY

23 JULY – 22 AUGUST

23 AUGUST – 22 SEPTEMBER

It’s a time for love, pleasure and all things close to your heart. Money, too. Trust your instincts in financial and property matters – sudden insights could lead to new business ventures and there’s no better time to negotiate new agreements. If you need a loan, it’s the perfect time to apply. Or start looking for better-paid work.

Given your amazing capacity to learn quickly, October should suit you well. The planets promote an atmosphere of open chat and communication, enabling you to share your thoughts and opinions. At the same time, you’re encouraged to discard outworn attitudes and embrace all that’s new. Don’t shy away from the unexpected.

Virgos tend to hold firm beliefs. Usually, it’s takes a very strong argument to convince you of anything but your own mind. Occasionally, though, you meet intriguing new company that instigates an effortless change in attitude. Could this be love? Or perhaps, a genuine friendship. Either way, it should prove long lasting.

OPINION

Bach by Candlelight Australian Festival of Chamber Music

let’s talk about the value of cultural tourism IN A WORLD WHERE MONEY TALKS LOUDEST, GRASPING THE IMMENSE VALUE OF THE ARTS AND CULTURAL SECTOR MIGHT COME DOWN TO DOLLARS AND CENTS. EVEN WITH MINIMAL SUPPORT AND PROMOTION, Townsville has already seen and benefited from the power of cultural tourism. The 2013 Australian Festival of Chamber Music, an annual event considered a ‘must-see’ nationally and internationally, drew over 13,000 visitors and generated over $2.2 million to Queensland’s economy – over $1.9 million of which went straight to North Queensland. Similarly, the recent Perc Tucker Regional Gallery LEGO exhibition drew over 100,000 visitors during its display, of which over 30,000 were interstate and international tourists. The figures are very impressive. Thorough research by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, Frontier Economics in 2009 showed that cultural activity injected $86.8 billion into Australia’s Gross Domestic Product. Similarly, Arts Victoria’s KPMG 2010-11 study showed their arts and cultural sector and creative industries injected $11.4 billion into their state’s economy, and employed 110,000 full-time workers in that financial period alone. Studies the world over show similar outstanding results. Beyond the obvious stimulation of jobs within the creative industries, support for the sector can encourage the development of significant infrastructure, and generate domestic and international tourism. Whilst locals love high-profile cultural activities and headline events; these also bring crowds from interstate and overseas, who spend their money on accommodation, food, entertainment, and with local retailers. Townsville has an active visual arts community that’s the envy of any region in the country. Theatre performances of note are both performed and conceived here. Our photographers, graphic artists, musicians, dancers and fashion designers are largely celebrated within their fields.

16 DUO MAGAZINE OCTOBER 2014 duomagazine.com.au

So, while Townsville doesn’t lack culture, it unfortunately doesn’t celebrate it as readily as other cities. Those in positions of influence need to be regularly reminded of its value in shaping our community and collective cultural identity, and in improving the lives of residents and experiences of visitors alike. Townsville could do more to harness the true potential of its arts and culture sector. There’s perhaps a simple explanation for the lack of discussion, airtime and print space given to the economic benefits of arts and culture by the mainstream media. Many people simply don’t understand ‘the arts’ or how it affects their lives. Of course, understanding anything comes with exposure and therein lays the problem. If we don’t understand it, we don’t promote it. If we don’t promote it, we won’t be exposed to it. And if we aren’t exposed to it, we can’t understand it. A vicious cycle. So maybe the discussion needs to be framed differently. In a world where money talks loudest, grasping the immense value of the arts and culture sector might not be best achieved in discussing its inherent social benefits, but rather by appreciating its place as an economic stimulator. It’s undeniable. If we realise the value of cultural tourism to Townsville, resulting in more substantial promotion and investment in the sector, we won’t only be improving our social fabric, we’ll be investing in our future economic prosperity as well.

FAMILY DETECTIVES

JUDI HINSPETER AND KAREN CUMNER HAD TO THINK LIKE DETECTIVES TO RESEARCH THEIR FAMILY’S HISTORY. IT WAS THE 1970S. Judi Hinspeter used to wait with baited breath for the postman to visit. She never knew if the next letter or certificate would help unlock more information about her family history or provide another clue for Judi to investigate.

“It was always very exciting to find things out,” explains Judi. “I always wonder if the people who [research their family history] on computers today get the same excitement we used to get.” Judi’s quest to uncover her family’s history started when she was just a little girl. She used to ask her grandmother questions and write things down. “I was always a very inquisitive kid. I was just always interested in where I came from,” says Judi. But it wasn’t until the mid 1970s, when she stumbled across an advertisement about the Genealogical Society of Queensland opening a branch in Townsville, that she started to research her family history seriously. Since then Judi’s search has spanned numerous countries and involved writing countless letters, searching archives in Brisbane, contacting editors at newspaper outlets in Gloucestershire, England, and reading through censuses taken both here and in the Mother Country. To say her search for information has been extensive is putting it lightly. It has been a four-decade journey of discovery, perseverance, excitement and at times frustration, roadblocks and mysteries. But one thing that was never a mystery was whom the Hinspeter family descended from in Australia. That man was named Fritz Hinspeter. He was just 19 years old when he arrived in Brisbane on 22nd June 1878. He had travelled from Hamburg, Germany, on the ship “Friedeburg”, where

18 DUO MAGAZINE OCTOBER 2014 duomagazine.com.au

he had met his future wife, Maria Reimer, onboard. “They married in Brisbane in 1881,” says Judi. “After which they travelled north to Townsville by horse and cart.” Once in Townsville Fritz Hinspeter became a bit of an entrepreneur setting up a number of businesses, some of which are still known of today. “[Fritz and Maria] opened a grocery shop in Flinders Street, adjacent to where the Sovereign Hotel is now, in the 1880s,” says Judi. Then in 1912 Fritz and his sons acquired a Willys Overland Taxi Cab, which had been partially destroyed by fire, and converted it to a truck. It became the first motor truck in Townsville and the business became known as F.E. Hinspeter and Sons, and in much later years, Hinspeter Crane Service. “The business was finally sold in 2008, some 122 years later,” explains Judi. But it is not just the Hinspeter family who have deep roots in Townsville. Judi’s maiden name is Stibbs and the Stibbs family have also been in Townsville for over 100 years. Her family descended from John Stibbs, who travelled to Brisbane from Gloucestershire, England, arriving on 27th February 1882. He married Annie Shearman, who also hailed from Gloucestershire in 1878. “There are still a lot of Shearmans around [Townsville] today,” says Judi. But Judi’s search hasn’t just involved deceased family members. In 1984 she travelled to England to meet family she had tracked down. “The family we met seemed so familiar to us,” says Judi. “The kinship was amazing!” And meeting those wonderful people has been the best part of researching her family history. It was even more exciting than waiting for the postman all those years ago.

But as we know, that’s not the case. And Karen Cumner is not your average cemetery visitor. She was, and continues, to be on an important mission to help people find out more information about their deceased relatives’ pasts. “I love researching,” says Karen, who started looking into her family history out of a curiosity of where she came from. “I wanted to find out some stories [my family] didn’t know the endings to.” It’s been 15 years since Karen first started talking to family members and searching archives to uncover information about her ancestors’ pasts. In that time she has managed to solve a number of mysteries. “Sometimes I think I know more about my family than perhaps past generations,” says Karen, whose great grandmother grew up in the state ward system and knew nothing about her parents. “[My great grandmother] grew up thinking her father was dead but he was very much alive and I’ve since tracked down where he is buried in an unnamed grave and made the journey out there several years ago just to pay my respects.” Another mystery Karen has spent years researching is the lives of the victims onboard the ill-fated Yongala. The Yongala was on its 99th journey in Australian waters when it sunk southeast of Townsville in March 1911. In 2001, when a great aunt told Karen a family member had been onboard, she knew she had to find out more. “My great, great grandparents went to their graves not knowing what had happened to their daughter,” explains Karen, who has often thought about the

heartache the families must have experienced with loved ones missing. “I wrote 122 biographies – one on each person who perished onboard the Yongala.” During this research into each of the persons onboard, Karen came across a double headstone in the West End cemetery that sadly never got finished. Karen assumes this is because the mother lost her son onboard the Yongala. “He would naturally have been the next person when his mother died to have made sure the engraving went on the headstone,” says Karen. “I look at that headstone and I just think that it tells a whole story.” Karen’s detailed knowledge about each of the persons onboard has seen her become a somewhat expert about the sinking and also a “go-to person” for people trying to find out more about their deceased relatives. “I help these people for free because I just love it,” says Karen. She also has great empathy for all the people she has ever researched, especially those ancestors who journeyed out to Australia all those years ago. “I always think about what they endured in a new land. They’ve given us a lot more opportunity.” She also says she couldn’t have achieved what she has without the support of the Townsville Maritime Museum and Seafarers Association, and the Family History Association of North Queensland. “They are wonderful organisations and the people are only too willing to help.” For more information about the Family History Association of North Queensland, visit www.fhanq.org or call 4728 2833.

DUO ‘FOREIGN CORRESPONDENT’

DOES THIS MAKE MY EGO LOOK BIG? BY MICHELE MAHONE

LIVING IN LOS ANGELES, I see big egos everywhere. Even the wait staff at the hot restaurant of the moment throws tude. (You know who you are and I’m still waiting for my refill). Actors often get a bad rap, but if you really want to see ‘ego run amuck’ I turn your attention to the concert stage… ‘Do you know who I think I am’ was brought to a whole new level by the self-proclaimed ‘genius’, Kanye West. While on tour in Australia, his Sydney show was brought to a drawn out uncomfortable halt while Mr. West insisted that everyone stand while he performed. EVERYONE including a man in a wheelchair and one with a prosthetic limb. At one point, in an attempt to get Kanye to resume the show (and stop the crowd from booing) the man removed his limb and waved it in the air. That happened, that actually happened. Instead of an apology, a backstage pass and needle to pop his own inflated head, Kayne said simply “ok, you fine”. Bad manners, bad grammar, and if I’m being honest, bad songs. Why anyone pays money to see this fool is beyond me. Being an entertainer takes a certain amount of confidence, gyrating on stage and charging a king’s ransom for concert tickets requires that you know who you are. When fans of Madonna said her tickets were too expensive she replied, without so much as a blink, “Start saving your pennies now. People spend $300 on crazy things all the time, things like handbags. So work all year, scrape the money together and come to my show. I’m worth it”. Amen to that! If people aren’t blowing their money on handbags they’re just going to waste it on food for their table. If you feed your kids every day they’ll start expecting it, go have fun!

Five star hotels are all well and good, but do you really expect a megastar to sit on a toilet that was previously used by a member of the great unwashed?? TAKE IT AWAY! And if the megastar is Beyoncé, that toilet paper had better be red. Colour is a real sticking point for some of the kids at the cool table. The tea: Green, the Hydrangeas: Purple and the bread: White, no wheat. Oh wait, NO bread…. it’s all written down here somewhere. It’s all written down on the RIDER, a list of excruciatingly specific demands that had better be right or heads will roll. I like plants as much as the next guy, but it never occurred to me to be particular about trunks, or lack thereof. Get a load of this plant request ‘Six full and leafy floor plants, but no trees. We want plants that are just as full on the bottom as the top such as palm, bamboo, peace lilies, etc. No tree trunks’! You got that?

22 DUO MAGAZINE OCTOBER 2014 duomagazine.com.au

Sir McCartney said NO TRUNKS. Would you want to be the person that at the last minute had to source a chainsaw? Neither would I. Big stars and big egos go together like Vegemite on Toast (organic with the crust cut off). They live in a world that most of us will only read about while shaking our heads. Kanye has me scratching mine.

NORTH SHORE LIVING INSPIRES CREATIVE PAWTRAITS

FOR DANIELLE LESLIE, IT WAS HER FAMILY AND HER COMMUNITY THAT INSPIRED HER TO START HER OWN SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS.

AND WHEN DANIELLE SAYS FAMILY, she means her two puppies. And of her community, she is speaking of the vibrant and active North Shore development. Creative Animal Portraits is the first professional pet photography business to be established in Townsville. After completing her degree in New Media Arts and Photography, Danielle spent a year researching the industry before launching it two years ago from her North Shore home.

“I specialise in unique and creative portraits and it is something that I take great pride in,” Danielle said. “My customers range from families with kids, young singles to retired people, but they all have one thing in common, they love their fury friends.” “We have a three-step process from contact through to booking where we gain a comprehensive understanding of what the client wants, their inspiration and of course, getting to know their pets. “This means, when they arrive, we are ready to shoot and have fun.” Danielle says that running her own business can mean sacrificing a lot. She can go weeks without a day off but the young professional thinks it’s all worth it. “It’s not really work to me, it’s my passion, my career and my life,” Danielle explains. “Working from home is a huge advantage as it cuts out all travel time and I have more spare time than I otherwise would to spend with my family.”

Danielle, a self-described animal lover and creative type, describes the business as ‘an artistic expression of the beauty that is pets and their relationship with us.’

24 DUO MAGAZINE OCTOBER 2014 duomagazine.com.au

Danielle has been living in the Northern Beaches for most of her life. She moved to the area with her parents when she was just 15 and has watched the North Shore emerge into a community that has it all. “I chose to buy my first house in North Shore because it’s beautifully quiet and I love space and nature,” Danielle said.

“I find myself needing to live while being surrounded by these things as they help provide me with ideas and inspiration. “I love that I feel safe walking my dog at anytime, the wide roads, paths, parks and all the families living here makes for a great neighbourhood. “Almost every family in North Shore has a pet so it’s a great place to get clients also.” Danielle’s vision is to see the business grow and for her to deliver many more creative animal portraits to her growing customer base. “I hope to make my mark within the industry and become an identity Townsville will know and come to for beautiful family photos – all including their beloved pets of course.” Find Creative Animal Portraits on Facebook or call Danielle on 0431227437 www.creativeanimalportraits.com.au

North Shore is set over 1,000 hectares that includes a sprawling Central park, a 6km long Green Spine and 15 neighbourhood parks. With 40% of the community dedicated to open natural spaces that includes 40km of picturesque walking trails, the great outdoors is within easy reach. www.stockland.com.au/northshore

A RISING STAR

PROVIEW HOMES IS PROVING IT BELONGS AT THE TOP OF THE BUILDING INDUSTRY AFTER WINNING MASTER BUILDERS’ RISING STAR AND PRESIDENT’S AWARD.

JOHN PLOZZA is the driving force behind Proview Homes’ great success. Not only has he been heavily involved in their award winning designs, but tradespeople and customers are equally impressed with John’s down-to-earth, energetic, dependable and honest personality. Put simply, he’s a great guy to do business with. And business is something he knows well. John comes from a farming family in the Burdekin and built his first home when he was just 18 years old. Three years later he owned his first business – an engineering company – and then went on to become an experienced business owner. “I owned a franchise for over eight years,” explains John. “And it was during this time my passion for construction evolved.”

“We’ve had extraordinary success since we started Proview Homes just a few years ago.” JOHN PLOZZA

Then in March 2011 John became a registered builder and he didn’t waste any time getting to work – starting on his first Proview Home in August 2011. “We’ve had extraordinary success since we started Proview Homes just a few years ago,” explains John. “And I’ve been lucky enough to experience all these

28 DUO MAGAZINE OCTOBER 2014 duomagazine.com.au

wonderful achievements with my business partner and wife, Jasmine.” Those wonderful achievements John is referring to consist of two industry awards in 2013 and four industry awards in 2014, including the Rising Star and President’s Award at this year’s Master Builders North Queensland Housing & Construction Awards. “It has been lovely to receive industry recognition for the detail and level of finish in our beautiful homes,” says Jasmine Plozza. “In 2013 we set a standard. This year we raised the bar. And we promise to continue delivering innovative designs and exceptional service as we head into 2015.” Proview Homes’ trademark style reflects sophistication and includes grand features, such as stone bench tops and 2.7 metre high ceilings. “We believe it is the little details and finishes that make the biggest difference in building an award winning home,” explains John. “We are focused on outstanding quality and delivering a house you will love.”

And that is not all they are focused on. John, Jasmine and the rest of the team also want to make sure they continue to research new and innovative ideas. “We want to stay at the top of our game,” says John. “It is important we continue to improve as a business and that our exceptional service never waivers.” They also have a few exciting developments just around the corner. “We are launching two new display homes,” says John. “The Greater Ascot will be available by Christmas and the new estate Fairways is coming in 2015.” To find out more about Proview Homes’ award winning designs, please visit www.proviewhomes.com.au or call them on 4729 0971.

GRANT COLLINS | AUDIOLOGIST | CLARITY HEARING SOLUTIONS

HEARING AID PRICING

Why are there large differences in pricing across different companies for potentially the same hearing aids? Let’s talk about how to compare apples with apples when it comes to hearing aid and service provision pricing.

If you were to scout the Internet or visit several hearing providers you may find a large variation of pricing between companies for exactly the same hearing devices. However what you may not be aware of is the different service provision, or treatment package, included in the price of the hearing aid. The reason for much of this confusion is because there are now two methods of pricing within the audiological industry called bundled and unbundled. Until recently traditional hearing aid provision models were all bundled and you would pay a set price for the hearing aid and this included all the treatment and service provision for the life of the hearing aid. So, as a hearing provider, you had to calculate and build in the cost of five years and more of service provision and treatment. Because you’re having to provide service and treatment for this period, the hearing aid price may be quite expensive to encompass this.

The reason for much of this confusion is because there are now two methods of pricing within the audiological industry called bundled and unbundled.

treatment best suits your needs to accompany the hearing aid. Our four options are pay per visit (where each time you see us we charge set fees depending on what audiological treatment you are receiving), one-year unlimited treatment packages, three-year unlimited treatment packages and the traditional lifetime options (five plus years).

expense. Audiologists are health professionals with Masters level graduate credentials, so have five to six years of university study followed by an intense internship period. The closest health professional to compare with is a dentist. In fact, in the United States, audiology is only offered as a doctorate so, like a dentist, when you graduate you are a Doctor of Audiology. We will eventually head down the same path here in Australia. In theory then, an audiologist’s time should be comparative to a dentist. Unfortunately for us in reality it is not, however our time is of some value.

We provide a full costing breakdown of services associated with treating the hearing loss and let the patient decide whether they wish to pay per consultation or package their treatment. This is where the confusion is with price comparison as the quoted prices for some hearing aids are bundled where others are not. It can be very confusing for the consumer. Personally I believe in being transparent with patients and feel all providers should unbundle so you know exactly where your money is being spent and what treatment you receive.

To counter these potential inequities of lengthy service provision and to educate the consumer more on what the actual costs are when purchasing we are now moving to an unbundled model. Unbundling consists of breaking down the clinical costs and making the consumer aware of them, and then providing flexibility in choosing the treatment methods to accompany the hearing aid purchase.

The problem with this model is patients think it’s the hearing aids that are the largest expense, when in reality it’s the audiologist’s time to provide the service and associated treatment for more than five years that incurs a larger portion of the

For example, we now provide four unbundled treatment options. Following a consultation you simply purchase a suitable hearing aid for a minimal cost and then choose which

LAURELYN HIGGINS | HYGIENIST | SMILE DENTAL

WHY LOOK AFTER YOUR DENTAL HEALTH? Ready to learn how our dental health affects our general health and wellbeing? Smile Dental’s Hygienist Laurelyn Higgins gives you the lowdown.

Want some life-saving advice? The incidence of diabetes is on the rise. People are at risk of losing their eyesight, their feet or even their lives. Some diabetics suffer from periodontal or gum disease, possibly due to the diabetic’s greater susceptibility to infection, but don’t know it. Gum disease may also interfere with the diabetic patient’s blood sugar control. Signs of gum disease can include dry mouth, bleeding gums, fruity breath and tooth decay. Ask for some personalised dental advice about protecting your health and your life.

Visiting your dentist during pregnancy Periodontal (gum) disease is more likely during pregnancy even if you’re a good brusher. It’s due to factors such as changing hormones, changes in the diet or even changes in brushing due to nausea. Doctors are concerned because there’s an increased risk for having a baby too early or too small which is dangerous for the baby. Make your preventive dental appointment a priority during this exciting time. Take extra care so you and your bub stay strong and healthy.

Ageing well: oral health’s importance Healthy teeth and gums are essential for healthy ageing. Here are some reasons why. A smile that is neither healthy nor attractive can affect appearance, confidence and selfesteem. Untreated periodontal (gum) disease is a risk factor for certain medical conditions and can also result in loose teeth. Diseased teeth and loose teeth make it difficult to chew a wide variety of foods which provide the essential nutrients necessary for wellbeing. So make a good dental health care routine a priority as you grow older.

Are you at risk for periodontal (gum) disease? The mouth is the doorway to the body and periodontal disease is a very common disease in the mouth. Research connects periodontal or gum disease with heart disease, diabetes and other medical conditions. Gum disease is caused by bacterial biofilm associated with many risk factors including smoking, diabetes, ethnicity and family history. But are you at risk for developing periodontal or gum disease? Take the online risk assessment test under patient resources at www.perio.org.

Dental Detectives Dentists, therapists and hygienists see patients regularly in a modern practice. As “dental detectives”, we look for clues regarding general health while examining dental problems. For example, a sore and painful jaw can be a potential warning of a heart attack. Night time teeth grinding and reflux acid wear are associated with sleep disorders. Enamel wear from acids and enlarged parotid glands can signal an eating disorder while an extremely dry mouth and uncomfortably dry eyes suggests Sjogren’s Syndrome. The mouth can be the mirror of your general health. We’ll tell you what we see.

As ‘dental detectives’, we look for clues regarding general health while examining dental problems.

Dental Woes and Menopause Are intermittent hot flashes and insomnia driving you crazy? A simple test by your doctor will help you understand what’s happening to you. It’s important because menopausal women are more at risk for periodontal or gum disease due to fluctuating hormone levels. And untreated gum disease can lead to jaw bone loss and loose teeth. So take control of your health and your body.

HERMIT PARK CLINIC AND SKIN CANCER CARE ADVOCATE A SOUND RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PATIENT AND DOCTOR BECAUSE THAT’S THE SECRET TO GOOD MEDICINE. THERE AREN’T TOO MANY THINGS in life more personal than our health. And there is certainly nothing more important than it. But sometimes what holds us back from getting the care we need is a weak, or non-existent, relationship with our local doctor. According to Dr. Peter Carson, co-owner of Hermit Park Clinic and Skin Cancer Care, it is important for doctors to form sound relationships with patients and get to know them. This allows doctors to make informed decisions about a patient’s health care, and ensures a patient feels comfortable discussing the good, the bad and the ugly aspects of their health. “Continuity of care is the secret to good medicine,” says Dr. Carson. “Health care can be very personal at times and if I need to tell you some bad news, or perform a procedure that is a little tricky or uncomfortable, it is better that we know each other first. Plus, it is vital for a doctor to have a good understanding about the patient’s medical history and life.” This is something Hermit Park Clinic and Skin Cancer Care feel very strongly about, which is why they allocate you a primary doctor upon your first visit. It is also why they recently hired five new doctors, bringing the total number of doctors to 11. “The five new doctors, Dr. Kenny Clarke, Dr. Paul Coxon, Dr. Asha Baloch, Dr. Claire Robinson and Dr. Michael Khong, all bring something unique to the team,” says Dr. Carson. “Dr. Clarke is a type one diabetic and also an elite athlete who has competed at the Commonwealth Games for Scotland. He has a great personal interest in diabetes and knows how to balance the condition with life’s demands.” Dr. Coxon on the other hand was born and bred in Townsville, so he knows all too well the dangers of the sun on our skin and has a real passion for skin care and sports medicine. “Our other new doctor, Dr. Khong, is also passionate about skin care treatment,” explains Dr. Carson. “As well as child development and general practice.”

Lastly, the two new female doctors, Dr. Robinson and Dr. Baloch, have a great interest and passion for women’s health and are a welcomed addition to the clinic’s outstanding team. And the outstanding team deliver a wide range of health care services, including general health care, immunisation, shared antenatal care, family planning, sports medicine, and skin cancer surveillance, diagnosis and treatment. “In addition to all the services you would expect from your local GP, we also perform vasectomies and we offer a Sleep Medicine service called sleepGP,” says Dr. Carson. “Our vasectomy service is promoted as Northern Snip.” Dr. Carson is on a mission to de-bunk some of the myths around vasectomies, as he recognises the importance of this simple procedure in relieving women of the burden of contraception. “It’s a minor procedure that takes 20 – 25 minutes,” says Dr. Carson, who has performed over 300 vasectomies with local anaesthesia and simple oral sedation. “And it changes people’s lives. If you are thinking about it, I urge you to visit our Northern Snip website as a first step.” In line with their philosophy about fairness and accessibility the procedure is only $500. “We have a great ‘blended’ billing policy,” says Dr. Carson. “In the interest of fairness and accessibility we offer a mix of private, discount, pensioner and bulk billing fees.” So if you are after something other than a ‘one size fits all’ approach to health care, be sure to visit Hermit Park Clinic and Skin Cancer Care the next time you need to discuss your health. WINNING THE BATTLE

“I’M GETTING MY FITNESS BACK THROUGH BOOT CAMP AND I’M GETTING ON WITH LIFE.” LARISSA BROWN, 31, ALLIGATOR CREEK

BEING DIAGNOSED WITH BREAST CANCER IS NOT AN AUTOMATIC DEATH SENTENCE, AS THESE LOCAL SURVIVORS CAN ATTEST. OCTOBER IS BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH, SO TAKE THE TIME TO READ THESE INSPIRATIONAL STORIES AND CONSIDER HOW YOU CAN SUPPORT THE FABULOUS WORK BEING DONE BY THE TOWNSVILLE HOSPITAL’S BREAST CARE NURSES. WORDS KYLIE DAVIS PHOTOGRAPHY SKYE BREE SANDRA HEIER EVENSEN

BEING AN ENGINEER MEANS LARISSA BROWN likes to research – everything. So when, as a third-year engineering student at JCU (aged 27), she was diagnosed with Invasive Lobular Carcinoma she did her homework. “According to all my findings, I was going to die,” Larissa says. “I shouldn’t have done it to myself – I’m still here; happy and healthy.” It’s been a long road to recovery, however, with more shocks in store. Following initial surgery to remove the mass in her breast, Larissa underwent staging scans to check the cancer hadn’t spread elsewhere. That’s when they found a mass on her ovaries that showed signs of malignancy. Larissa went back into surgery to remove that mass then underwent three months of chemotherapy followed by three weeks of radiation and a five-year course of monthly injections and daily medication. “While my poor body was recovering from the battering, I underwent genetic counselling and testing and spoke with another breast surgeon

about understanding my true risk of relapse,” Larissa says. “Unfortunately the numbers weren’t in my favour so, in 2013, I underwent a bilateral mastectomy and a reconstruction. They did a fantastic job. Fast forward to 2014 and my health is great. I’m getting my fitness back through boot camp and I’m getting on with life,” Larissa says. “I still get a few scares, which make my heart skip a beat, but I’ve been nil evidence of disease since 2010.” Larissa cannot praise her medical team enough. “My incredible Radiation Oncologist, Dr Sean Brennan, always inspires me to be the very best I can be – he’s still encouraging me to do a PhD,” Larissa says. “I can’t thank Dr Sally Meade enough either. She was unwilling to accept second best and fought for me to get only the top surgical outcomes. The breast care nurses are fantastic out at the hospital as well. They were my rock.” Most people think getting cancer is the worst

40 DUO MAGAZINE OCTOBER 2014 duomagazine.com.au

thing that can happen to you but Larissa begs to disagree: “Don’t get me wrong, it hasn’t been a walk in the park, but I’ll never say that is has been a bad experience. I’ve been so fortunate with the people I’ve met throughout this process – my surgeons, nurses, oncologists and fellow patients. Larissa says she’s blessed to have a supportive family and a circle of friends who she considers family, along with an understanding employer (Larissa is Group Mechanical Engineer at Wilmar Sugar). “My now husband also stepped up to the plate and went above and beyond what would be expected of a partner/carer,” Larissa says. “He truly showed his love for me and this has strengthened our relationship. Even when I was bald, he would tell me every day that I was beautiful.”

“THE VERY WORST MOMENT WAS TELLING MY THREE CHILDREN I HAD BREAST CANCER, AS THEY ASSOCIATED THE WORD CANCER WITH DEATH.” MELANY SPAULL, 43, NORTH WARD

SINGLE MUM OF THREE MELANY SPAULL first noticed a small mass at the top of her breast in November 2011 while showering. Thinking it was a menstrual thing, and would go away in the following weeks, she didn’t worry. A month later, when she felt the mass again (this time a little bigger, harder and more painful than before), she still wasn’t concerned as there’s no history of cancer in her family. At worst, Melany suspected she had a blocked duct and visited her GP a couple of weeks later. Her GP referred her to have a mammogram and ultrasound and prescribed antibiotics as a precautionary measure. “Six days later, on my daughter’s 15th birthday, I received my diagnosis of Stage 3 Invasive Ductal Carcinoma,” Melany says. “The very worst moment was telling my three children I had breast cancer, as they associated the word cancer with death. I promised them I wouldn’t keep anything from them, including bad news. I felt it was very important for them to be

able to trust in me at a time when they were feeling very scared and vulnerable.” Upon diagnosis Melany had a lumpectomy, which was unsuccessful, followed by a total mastectomy, full axilla clearance and six gruelling rounds of chemotherapy. She then underwent hormone therapy, which led to the removal of her ovaries and tubes. “I’m about to return to work after completing a Tram Flap breast reconstruction and am finally at peace with my diagnosis,” Melany says. “I’ve experienced the normal range of emotions that come with mourning the loss of my breast, including sadness and anger, however I now feel a renewed strength and fight since my reconstructive surgery. I do not for one minute take for granted how lucky I am.” Having said this, Melany is quick to add that one of the misconceptions about breast cancer is that those diagnosed with it are all brave, strong, positive people. “I was never any of these things and I felt at times

I couldn’t have bad, horrible days lying on the floor sick and crying,” she says. “Some days this was my reality and I felt guilty because there are so many wonderful, inspirational women battling breast cancer. It was only when I befriended another breast cancer patient that I felt I could truly acknowledge some of the raw things I was going through. We’ve shared many tears and laughs.” Melany was very impressed by the warmth of the breast care nurses and says that, even on the worst days, with the worst prospects, they were always a calming presence. “The doctors, surgeons, nurses, carers, therapists, hospital staff and volunteers are the brave, strong ones, as they choose this path,” she says. “The breast care nurses taught me a very important life lesson, which I still use today… Don’t look at the big picture, just make it to the next appointment.”

“I HAD PEOPLE WHO LEFT CARDS AND GIFTS IN MY LETTERBOX, TO FRIENDS WHO CAME AND DID THE WASHING AND GARDENING.” ELSPETH MACDONALD, 50, KELSO

REGISTERED NURSE AND MIDWIFE ELSPETH MACDONALD was 23 weeks pregnant when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. It was February of 2001 and she was working at Charters Towers Hospital at the time. At a routine antenatal appointment, Elspeth mentioned to her doctor that she had a lump in her breast. “As a midwife I thought it was just part of being pregnant,” Elspeth says. “The doctor did an ultrasound of my breast and then suggested I go for a fine-needle biopsy. So off I went to Townsville to have another ultrasound and a fine-needle biopsy.” When the doctor asked to see Elspeth the next day while at work, she thought he was just wanting to ‘talk shop’, but then he told her the test results… “In a matter of three days my world had turned upside down and inside out,” Elspeth says. “What about my baby? My partner Peter was away working at a mine he’d only started at just a few weeks before. That phone call to him was so hard to make.”

Elspeth had a mastectomy within the week and then waited until she was 32 weeks pregnant to have a C-section. Meghan was born 9th April at Kirwan Hospital, a healthy bub. As soon as Meghan was strong enough to travel, the family flew to the Wesley Hospital in Brisbane so Elspeth could undergo cancer treatment. “A volunteer from the Cancer Council met my partner at the airport and took him to the hospital while Meghan and I travelled in an ambulance,” Elspeth says. “Our daughter went into the special care unit and I saw the oncologist. My oldest daughter, Rachael, was also completing Grade 12 at the time, so it was tough year for her too.” Elspeth underwent chemotherapy in Brisbane every three weeks over a period of six months. There are moments of 2001 she can’t recall but now, 13 years later, she’s doing fine. “There have been many bumps and detours in my journey and my family and friends have been vital to surviving the challenges,” Elspeth says.

42 DUO MAGAZINE OCTOBER 2014 duomagazine.com.au

“I know that during my journey I had the support of many different people to help me in so many ways. Sometimes it was like I had the whole population of Charters Towers supporting me. I had people who left cards and gifts in my letterbox, to friends who came and did the washing and gardening.” Elspeth says she also had a special lady in her life who gave her advice and inspiration: “Sadly she passed away a few years ago, but her daughter is my best friend and she now works for the Cancer Council.”

“WE HAPPILY TELL BOTH PATIENTS AND STAFF THAT WE HAVE ONE OF THE BEST NURSING ROLES AVAILABLE.” CLAIRE SMITH, KATHY JONES AND TANIA BERNHARDT THE TOWNSVILLE HOSPITAL’S BREAST CARE NURSES

The Townsville Hospital (TTH) now has three breast care nurses thanks to the fabulous support of the McGrath Foundation and the Australian Government funding a full-time position for the next three years at TTH. “We support both women and men who are newly diagnosed with breast cancer and those diagnosed with secondary breast cancer by offering support, education and counselling,” Claire says. “Our role is to provide physical, psychological and emotional support for local families experiencing breast cancer, from the time of diagnosis and throughout treatment.” This support is provided free of charge and can be accessed through self-referral. Most patients diagnosed with breast cancer are diagnosed through the BreastScreen Qld Service. The catchment area for TTH and Health Service BreastScreen Service is 376,499km2 (Victoria is 227,920km2). Patients attending TTH for breast cancer treatment may travel from as far away as Boulia for their care. “We happily tell both patients and staff that we have one of the best nursing roles available,” Kathy says. “Treatment for a breast cancer patient is based on each individual diagnosis and may last up to nine months with the follow-up period being five years, so we often develop long-term friendships with both patients and their families.” The TTH breast care nurses provide supportive care within a multidisciplinary team, including BreastScreen, surgical, medical, radiation oncology, pathology, allied health, Cancer Council Qld and non-government agencies. The nurses attend appointments with patients and their families, which generally commence in the surgical clinics, and act as a liaison point between team members and services. “Some people are concerned when they feel donations made do not stay local, but in our role we actively use resources that have been developed at both a state and national level,” Tania says. “If you’d like to make a difference by donating, please consider the following organisations as they provide support that we access on a weekly basis in our roles.”

THE BREAST CANCER NETWORK AUSTRALIA www.bcna.org.au Provides fantastic resources regarding treatment, practical tips, useful contacts and an online forum. CANCER COUNCIL QUEENSLAND www.cancerqld.org.au Contributes a wide range of resources, subsidised accommodation for patients travelling to Townsville for treatment, counselling and support. MCGRATH FOUNDATION www.mcgrathfoundation.com.au Has supported TTH’s request for additional staffing and funded a breast care nurse position for the next three years (Tania Bernhardt). ZONTA CLUB www.zonta.org.au Makes the comfort cushions and bottle bags patients use in the post-operative recovery period. MAKE-UP BY NIKKI NOODLE To complete Kristy’s transformation I used an airbrushing technique to give her a flawless complexion and teamed her new dewy look with a light bronzed smokey eye using Urban Decay’s NAKED Palette. The bronze tones in the eye application brought together with winged eyeliner and a set of wispy false lashes from ModelRock helped draw focus and elongate her eyes. Kristy’s makeup was finished with a satin sheen, nude lip and a light dusting of bronzer under her cheek bones. This look is a soft, feminine appearance that complemented Kristy’s features and her new amazing ombre hair by Colour It.

VERONICA BURKE

I’m a third generation Garbuttian. For people not up with the Garbutt lingo, it’s a person raised in Garbutt. I am blessed with two super cute little girls (Adelaide and Vienna) and a very tolerant husband (Anthony) of 15 years. Being that I couldn’t stray too far from the motherland – Garbutt or my Mum and Dad (aka the babysitters), I live just in the next suburb. This year Anthony started his own company – Burke Civil Engineering Services, so that keeps both of us very busy.

MY BAG Salvatore Ferragamo.

I bought this bag on a terribly romantic trip to Paris. I was on the hunt for a brown bag which mind you, I still don’t own, and saw this and loved it.

BOOK French Phrase book. I’d love to live in France so I (and the Girls) have been trying to learn French all this year. Kids pick up languages so easily, me on the other hand hopeless. Vienna laughs at my attempts to pronounce words and happily corrects me. Got to love kids. BOOKMARK Mother’s Day gift from my eldest daughter Adelaide. She loves rainbows and butterflies… Too cute. TENNIS BRACELET My first (and only) Mother’s Day gift. Not one for pomp and ceremony Anthony came home from work on the Friday – my sister Alison and I were in the kitchen – he comes in and drops it on the kitchen counter and says “No need to wait till Sunday” grabs the TV remote and puts on ESPN. Typical Burkie! TAG HEUER WATCH My 18th

Birthday present, so its 10 years old (ha!). It’s such a great watch, part of its charm is its well-worn look.

HEADPHONES Bang & Olufsen.

Anthony again. I’m not sure if he bought them for me or him but I have them none the less. Anthony has got me in to audiobooks.

LOUIS VUITTON SUNGLASSES

I got these on a girly trip away to replace a pair I left in a tent at the Townsville Cup last year. So, if anyone has picked up my missed pair I would love them back!

KEY RING Smythson. Burkie again. I got the matching makeup case, goodness knows why a key ring and makeup case need to match. 50 DUO MAGAZINE OCTOBER 2014 duomagazine.com.au

LOUIS VUITTON WALLET

Anthony bought this for me years ago as he is a big fan of Tintin and thought it was cool, luckily for me Anthony has very good taste!

PHOTOS My two beautiful little girls, Adelaide (6) and Vienna (7) have very similar personalities to Anthony and I respectively, which is humorous to watch. DOLLAR BILL Central Bank of the Bahamas. I just found this hidden in a pocket of my hand bag from a trip Anthony and I did a number of years ago. PHOTO The Irvine’s from 1979. I love this photo. Great memories of my cousins coming to visit during September holidays. I also love the two cool cars. MUM’S BROOCH ‘Borrowed’ from Mum about 15 years ago, it was a gift from Dad to Mum for her 18th Birthday. GUCCI TISSUE HOLDER

Bought in Hawaii for my best friend but I kept it; sadly it’s not the first time I’ve done that… Sorry Smells.

BUSINESS CARD HOLDER

Louis Vuitton. I often meet people who are so shocked that I’m married to Anthony. Anyway after their shock I get asked for HIS business card.

NOVEL Jane Austin Pride and Prejudice picked up at a book exchange in Yungaburra. MAKEUP Jane Iredale. This is the only makeup that will cover my horrible rosy cheeks and it lasts for ever. PERFUME Chanel Coco Mademoiselle. Mum and Dad are just back from Europe and brought me this perfume. Thanks Mum... and Dad.

TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF: I am a Dental Hygienist at Smile Dental. I have worked in the dental industry for a long time now and really love it. I am lucky to work with a very talented bunch of people. In the past I have been based in the UAE working for Emirates Airline as international cabin crew. I worked in business class on the A380 fleet. I was lucky enough to be one of the faces of the company and attended many promotional events such as the last Fifa World Cup in South Africa, a Cartier Jewellery show in San Francisco and a variety of world class racing events across the UK.

DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE: Feminine – I love skirts and dresses, pastels seem to suit my complexion. I love floral, embellished cardigans, oh and blue, I love blue. MOST TREASURED ITEM: A set of diamond rings that my grandmother passed on to me for my 21st birthday. There are three in the set – gold, rose gold and white gold and they are covered in sparkling diamonds. My grandfather bought them for my grandmother when they visited Turkey. They match a much-loved pair of diamond studs given to me by my boyfriend John for my birthday last year. LABELS YOU LIKE: I love Allanah Hill, Zimmerman, Collette and Country Road. Camilla and Gorman too. I’ve discovered a few new brands from Melbourne that I follow on Instragram also – Mister Zimi and Emeldo Designs. BEST SHOPPING TRIP: When I lived in Dubai I spent a lot of time at Dubai Mall and Emirates Mall. Working as international cabin crew gave me the luxury of shopping in New York, London, Paris, and Singapore… oh, so many places. YOUR STYLE GURU: Naomi Watts, Nicole Kidman, Diane Kruger, Kate Bosworth and Scarlett Johanson always look nice. YOU’D NEVER BE CAUGHT WEARING: A frown (ha ha). I consider a smile to be your best accessory. With a bright pink or a blue based red to make your teeth appear lighter. WARDROBE ITEM YOU SHOULD PART WITH BUT CAN’T: My old uniform from my time with Emirates. SHOES OR DRESS FIRST: Dress. TOWNSVILLE HOSPITAL FOUNDATION RECEIVES ONGOING SUPPORT FROM 1RAR UNIT 2014 HAS SEEN A STRONG PARTNERSHIP FORM BETWEEN THE AUSTRALIAN DEFENCE FORCE 1RAR UNIT AND THE TOWNSVILLE HOSPITAL FOUNDATION, BACK IN MARCH 2014 THE 1RAR COMMITTED TO A DIRECT PARTNERSHIP WITH THE FOUNDATION. WO2 RONALD DAVIS is passionate about the Rehabilitation Platoon supporting the work the Foundation does and specifically the redevelopment of the Children’s Ward. The Rehabilitation Platoon manages the soldiers who have complex and diverse injuries who would not benefit from remaining in their respective companies. “Rehabilitation Platoon is orientated around physical training and medical/specialist appointments. Their aim is to ensure training programs are developed around the goals of the soldier being rehabilitated. Resilience Training is aimed at allowing the members of Rehabilitation Platoon to objectively look at their injury in the greater context. “Phase One is understanding their injury through development of a PowerPoint presentation of the injury from the time it happened, the injury, the surgery, what they repaired, the rehabilitation process and the expectation of the Australian Defence Force. Phase Two is working with another organisation that deals with mentally, physically and terminally ill patients (children who are already resilient – knowing this is bragging rights or a badge of honour at school) in order to assist members in objectively looking at their own injury, to aid in putting their injury into perspective compared with those in the local community who have been through similar or worse circumstances. Which is why we believe that our work with the Foundation and the children in hospital is just as much a benefit to us as to the patients. The desired result is seeing the Rehabilitation Platoon members having a greater understanding and knowledge of their injury, allowing them to see their injury in context in order to lift the spirits and motivate the soldier to rehabilitate within the timeframe allocated,” said WO2 Ronald Davis. Throughout 2014 the 1RAR have donated over 1000 volunteer hours to fundraising events held by the Foundation. The Platoon also spend one day per fortnight on the Children’s Ward. Sam Pascoe, Fundraising and Marketing Manager of the Townsville Hospital Foundation, said “They spend the day on the Ward interacting with the children; reading, talking, playing games and doing puzzles. No one likes being in hospital and for children that’s especially true. Having the soldiers come in to visit and play with the kids really brightens their day and helps the time pass more quickly. They also bring with them goodie bags for each of the children. They make such a profound difference and we are very grateful.” The 1RAR will continue to support the Foundation at all upcoming events and are planning fundraising projects of their own for the project.

HOW DO I PROTECT MY ASSETS BEFORE OR DURING A RELATIONSHIP?

And what happens if the relationship breaks down?

Sounds doom and gloom doesn’t it? But in all seriousness just look at the statistics – 1 in 3 marriages will end in divorce. That is every third person you meet will have already been divorced or… well, let’s not ruin it for them just yet. And people are waiting before getting married with the average age being 28 years. It goes without saying that for many in that age bracket they would have created a good amount of wealth in those 10+ years of working life. So what can a person do to protect assets that they have brought into a relationship, or perhaps a business they have worked hard to establish before the relationship? What if your relationship ends and you want to keep the assets you brought into the relationship from a property settlement or the other party is hiding or destroying assets? Let’s look at these 2 scenarios – before the relationship and if the relationship breaks down. So let’s start with before the relationship. There is a Binding Financial Agreement (BFA), or ‘pre-nup’. I like to think of these documents as a type of insurance policy. I often wonder when falling in love meant forgetting about everything else and not thinking of all the ways it can pan out. I mean, you don’t buy a

I often wonder when falling in love meant forgetting about everything else and not thinking of all the ways it can pan out.

house and just fall in love with it and that is it. No – you get insurance. No one says that act of getting insurance means you are just waiting for it to burn down do they? So why is it that when people get an ‘insurance policy’ to deal with the potential of a relationship breakdown that people think we are just waiting for the relationship to fail?! Just remember that these documents are legally technical documents, so make sure you see a specialist family law solicitor to prepare them. Another way to protect your assets at this initial stage is through a Trust structure. Trusts can work to ensure that the assets stay within your family and are a good option if this is not your first relationship and/or you have children from previous relationship/s. Again, there are pitfalls to using a Trust if they are not prepared properly so make sure you talk to a specialist family law solicitor. Now, the second scenario – you are already in the relationship, but you didn’t put an ‘insurance policy’ or Trust in place. So where does that leave you now? Unfortunately there may not be much you can do to keep the asset out of the property settlement at this stage. Each case is different, but the time to protect yourself may have

passed. If you are trying to prevent or protect assets from being sold or wasted, then there are some things that you can still do. For example if it is real estate, you can place a caveat on the title. This means the real estate cannot sell without you knowing about it and consenting to the sale. There are tricks to caveats which may mean that you will need to initiate proceedings and if they are not done correctly then there may be other issues you will face (such as costs orders against you). Then if you do need to initiate proceedings – don’t fear as you can do even more things in Court to protect or find assets such as injunctions, restrictions, subpoenas, undertakings and third part provisions to name a few. As you can see from above, when you look at how things can potentially pan out, why wouldn’t you plan at the beginning of the relationship! It can prevent so much. And if your relationship is really going to last, what is the problem…

EWEN JONES MP | FEDERAL MEMBER FOR HERBERT

DON’T FORGET TO CALL HOME

I KNEW I WAS IN TROUBLE AND I WAS SIMPLY NOT GOING TO CHECK THE MESSAGE THAT THEY’D LEFT.

So there I was, on my way home from a fortnight in Canberra. I had to stop over in Brisbane for some meetings on the way home. I had discussed this with my parents a few weeks earlier. I said I would be in Brisbane that day and I would try to catch up with my two brothers. If it was alright with them, I would stay there Friday night and then get to Townsville on Saturday morning. I was set like a dog’s foot in a rice pudding.

path for me! I mean, whose fault was it anyway? Certainly not mine!! Sure, I may have, if you stretch it far enough, given them the impression, albeit so loosely that no one could hold you to it, that I was definitely going to stay there. Sure, with no dissenting voice they may have expected me on Friday night. But is that really my fault? Of course not. Would Linda listen to reason? Not a chance. She took my parents’ side – as usual!

I finished early and as I had not really spoken to my brothers, I flew home in time to see my son Andrew win his semi-final. We all went to bed happy in the knowledge that Sunday was Father’s Day and I would be, for one day, treated with the respect I deserved. I checked my phone in the morning. I saw that Mum and Dad had rung at 7.38 that morning. I would ring them back shortly. I went downstairs and saw that it was only 7.00am. So, I pulled on my glasses and re-checked the time of the missed call.

So there I was, on the phone listening to how I was not brought up like that; how they didn’t know if I was face down in a gutter somewhere; how they had rung the hospitals; how they didn’t know if the funeral was to be held in Brisbane or Townsville; how disappointed they were in me; how they expected better; how they felt about being abused like this.

My heart stopped. The time of the missed call was 1.38am. I had forgotten to call my parents and tell them that I would not be staying with them. I knew I was in trouble and I was simply not going to check the message that they’d left. I suggested to Linda that she might like to call my Mum and say hello. She knew something was up. I had to tell her. You know what? She would not ring my Mum and clear the

Worse was to come. I had to ring my dad for Father’s Day the next day and copped it all over again. This time though, everything was prefaced by “I am over it now but…” and then again two days later when I had to ring him for his birthday. Worse is still to come. I have to speak to Mum eventually and really cop it. I am now 54 years old and a grown man who is in the Nation’s Parliament. I stare down all manner of foe. But I shiver before the steeled glare of my Mum’s disapproval. You are never too old…

TIRED AND RUN DOWN AT WORK? HOW’S YOUR SLEEP? OUR WORKPLACES TOLERATE AND OFTEN EVEN PROMOTE VERY LITTLE SLEEP

GOALS UNLOCK YOUR POSITIVE MIND AND RELEASE IDEAS AND ENERGY FOR GOAL ATTAINMENT.

Sleep is one of the basics that everybody needs – food, water, oxygen and sleep. Yet sleep in our fast paced modern world is one that seems to be continually compromised. Recently I was reading yet another study about the importance of sleep and one very striking comment that has stayed with me is that ‘our workplaces tolerate and often even promote very little sleep, colleagues often are heard boasting over coffee how many hours they worked the day before and how little sleep they had’. It continued… ‘as bosses we would not tolerate someone coming to work drunk, not one bit, however we tolerate even admire people coming to work sleep deprived’. The study continued to compare the affects of alcohol and how your brain and body responds to the affects of being sleep deprived. The similarities were stunning and stark. Now let’s just think about this – we tolerate and dismiss our children being tired and not getting enough sleep. I have seen children yawning in classrooms at 9am. What chance have they for learning new information and remembering it for the rest of the day? We do the same with babies and toddlers. We tolerate and dismiss our employees for being

QFG_TSV_105mm x 185mm Ad_OUTLINES_0914.indd 1

tired as well, how are they going to work efficiently, perform to their best, remember and retain new information that day at work? No matter what your job is – if performing to the best of your ability is important to you or really influences the health of others, making sleep a priority in your life will have an enormous impact. If your sleep is compromised by a baby or a child then shrugging your shoulders and thinking ‘that’s just how it is for young children’ is a myth, babies and children need sleep to be at their best, in their best mood, cope with the day, concentrate, remember, learn and recall. Not to mention how being sleep deprived actually compromises our immune system and we get sick often. If you have an worker/employee who is sleep deprived it would be in the best interests of your organisation/business to support that worker to solve their sleep problem so you can maximise their performance, not have someone who performs as ‘though they are under the influence of alcohol’. Sleep or lack of affects you psychologically, physically and emotionally, once you solve a sleep problem it certainly is life changing.

THE ART OF MISCOMMUNICATION

On the surface, communication seems easy enough. Millions of people do it every day, right? How can something so seemingly simple, sometimes go so wrong.

Communication is part of every minute, of every hour of every day of our entire existence. It starts as soon as we wake of a morning and only ends when we go to sleep at night (if we don’t sleep talk!). However, it is a part of our interactions with others that can easy cause confusion, misinterpretations and assumptions. Listed below are some communication tips that may alleviate some experiences of miscommunication and the problems that follow:

Most of our communication with one another is through reading a person’s body language, not verbal communication.

1. Never assume anything. Often if our husband/wife/partner/friend says something or acts a bit different one day, our response is usually to feel that it is intentionally being directed at us and our feelings are hurt. We assume there is a negative reason that they are acting a bit different and a usual response may be to sulk, pretend all is okay but we are secretly really annoyed with the other person or in an extreme case, just stop talking to them. It is easily seen how these responses will just cause more problems and more miscommunication. The best response

St Mary’s, West End

is to check in with that person and see if everything is okay. 2. Read the body language. Most of our communication with one another is through reading a person’s body language, not verbal communication. It is important that we always take this into consideration when we are in a conversation. Sometimes the verbal communication matches the messages we are receiving from the body language. Other times however, they do not match. Body language can really tell us what the other person is thinking or feeling. 3. Be wary of communication through technology. It is easy to misinterpret communication that comes via technology. Firstly, we cannot see the person in front of us, so we cannot read their body language to help interpret the message. Secondly, as we are not hearing the person say the message, we also cannot hear the tone in their voice. Tone, like body language, gives us a lot of information. If we cannot see the person or hear the tone in their voice, we are prone to falling into the trap of point number 1; making assumptions.

4. Check in with the person. If you are worried that there may be an unspoken issue between you and your husband/ wife/partner/friend, firstly leave it for a couple of days. Don’t react to one day of ‘something’ feeling different. The other person might just be having an off day and all will be back to normal tomorrow. If however the feeling continues, don’t assume the worst, go and talk to the person and find out if there is an issue. In this situation, it is best to simply mention that the other person doesn’t seem themselves at the moment and that you wanted to make sure they were okay. Don’t start the conversation by accusing the other person of acting differently. They in turn will feel like they have to defend themselves and a whole bunch of other issues will be created.

BUSINESS+DEVELOPMENT 420 FLINDERS STREET TOWNSVILLE. In designing this commercial tower in the city heart of Townsville, Arkhefield has delivered a highly energy efficient, cost effective development, and a striking addition to the North Queensland capital’s urban landscape. The tower was designed to be completely occupied by Ergon Energy, with the ground level accommodating the Ergon Energy lobby and a mix of retail and hospitality outlets. The building façade is dominated by sequences of vertical blades — providing shade, optimising energy efficiency, and creating a strong impression for the prominent address. The double height entry and foyer contribute to the public streetscape, while defining the building entrance. The orientation optimises views of both the city surrounds and Magnetic Island. POLISHED PERFORMERS HUSBAND AND WIFE DUO, BRUCE AND MITRA MAGGS, HAVE SPENT ALMOST 25 YEARS BUILDING UP BUSINESSES TOGETHER.

WORDS NICOLE THOMSON-PRIDE PHOTOGRAPHY SKYE BREE

WHEN MITRA MAGGS WAS 16 YEARS OLD she liked the idea of hairdressing, so she organised to undertake work experience at a local hairdresser’s salon. She hoped she would be allowed to watch a master at work and see how the hairdresser coloured, cut and styled clients’ hair. But instead, on her first day, she was ordered to clean the mirrors – over and over again. “When I got home that night I said I would never work for anyone again,” explains Mitra, who went on to complete a visual arts degree at James Cook University. “And I have never looked back.” While still at university Mitra met Bruce Maggs in 1990. By 1991 they’d started their first business together, a flooring business. “When I was working at the store I realised a lot of our customers found it challenging to put a look together for a room or their house,” explains Mitra. “So I became the in-house interior decorator by default.” She loved it so much that after finishing university, Mitra went on to complete an interior design diploma, which led to the creation of a new business – In Vogue Interiors. “Then my artistic flair led me to open another business – The Rug Collection,” says Mitra, who designed a series of rugs and travelled to China to ensure quality control. “A few years later we merged the two businesses together.” It’s clear that Mitra loves business as much as she loves design, which is why she is a perfect match for Bruce. “He’d always owned and operated his own business before I met him,” says Mitra. “We just decided to go a bit bigger once we got married.” Bruce comes from New South Wales and is an expert in the field of flooring. Over the years he has owned a number of flooring businesses. Their current business,

72 DUO MAGAZINE OCTOBER 2014 duomagazine.com.au

Concrete Grinding & Polishing Services, was born after travelling to Melbourne and Sydney numerous times to find out about the latest in design and architecture at exhibitions. At one of these exhibitions they came across polished concrete floors. “We both took a great liking and interest to this new concept in flooring,” says Bruce. “And we both realised there could be a great opportunity to introduce this wonderful floor finish to Townsville.” Bruce’s passion for concrete flooring is evident in the way he speaks about his business. “I love what I’m doing,” says Bruce. “We can proudly say that we’ve become the one-stop-shop for our customers, as our company offers a range of services from floor preparation to all types of grinding, polishing and epoxy finishes. We’re currently the largest [business] in the [concrete floor finishing] industry in Townsville and we intend to remain so.” So what’s next for this dynamic duo? “I see myself in this business for many years to come,” says Bruce. And Mitra has thrown herself into a Masters of Business Administration at James Cook University. She is interested in researching how we can make the workplace a happier environment. And after 25 years in business together what is their greatest achievement? “Our daughter, Celest,” says Mitra. It appears she inherited the business gene, as she is currently in her first year of a business degree at the University of Queensland. “She’s smart, beautiful, compassionate, a social butterfly and very much a family girl.” To contact Concrete Grinding & Polishing Services, visit www.concrete-grinding.com.au or call 0412 770 359.

FIVE TIPS TO SAVE AROUND THE HOUSE

One of the most effective ways to boost your savings and/or add to your super is to cut costs around the house. Here we outline some effective opportunities for spending less without feeling as if you’re going without.

1. Dress for success Using an air conditioner or heater in Australia, especially with increasing electricity costs, hits the hip pocket directly. Think of how you might avoid using the air conditioning for a few hours or a few days each week, by dressing differently or better insulating your home. Consumer body Choice says adjusting your air conditioner by a degree cooler in summer and warmer in winter will increase running costs by 10–15%. 2. Shop around From car insurance to mortgage costs to mobile phone plans, there could be better options that you’re missing out on. Figure out the services that cost you the most then have an honest conversation with the providers about how you might reduce those costs and then shop around. If they want to keep your business they will often find ways for you to save money or get more value out of the amount you’re paying.

Set yourself goals to work towards and implement these tactics to give yourself the best chance of achieving them, and speak to your financial adviser to find more cost-saving tips.

3. Lose the landline With the availability of unlimited mobile phone contracts, increasing options and quality of voice-over-internet protocol (VOIP) systems, you might find that you no longer require the traditional landline telephone. This will not only save money but it will reduce the chances of receiving human and recorded telemarketing calls. If you can do without it, don’t pay for what you don’t need. 4. Do you need it now? When people begin to properly record their household expenses, many are surprised by the fact that they have become so comfortable with the ‘need it now’ mentality. Do you need to buy the latest technology when last year’s still does the job? How about the newest mountain bike, running shoes, the most up-to-date fashion or a new car? This is a great way to save yourself thousands of dollars a year – by giving yourself permission to be happy with what you’ve got.

5. Budget, budget, budget The savings tips highlighted here will only have an impact if you effectively map out your inputs vs outputs. Set yourself goals to work towards and implement these tactics to give yourself the best chance of achieving them, and speak to your financial adviser to find more cost-saving tips.

MIXING BUSINESS AND FAMILY In business? With family? You can, but get it right from the start…

When setting up a family business, once you get past the ‘Will we all get along?’ question, it’s important to consider employing the right structure. It’s vital to have processes in place to govern the ‘what-ifs’, have a succession plan going forward, and protect the people and assets of the business (as well as your own personal, non-business assets). A common structure for ‘family in business’ is a partnership. It’s easy to establish, with low start-up costs and is good if there are a few partners and limited liability is not required. More capital may be available by having more than one partner, and the capacity to borrow will be greater. There’s also the opportunity for income splitting, which could lead to potential tax savings. Should your circumstances change, it’s easy to change this structure as well. Remember though that the liability of the partners for the business debts is unlimited, and each partner is liable for their share of the partnership debts as well as being liable for all the debts. Each partner is liable for the other partners’ actions and it can be costly if a partner leaves.

While there’s always a risk of disagreements and friction among family members in business, some of the most successful businesses have been run by families.

An alternative structure is a company. This is a distinct legal entity separate from its shareholders or officers. This is effective if you want limited liability but there are strict legal obligations and set-up costs can be expensive. Liability for shareholders is limited, it’s easy to transfer ownership by selling shares to another party, shareholders (often family members) can be employed by the company, and taxation rates can be more favourable. It can, however, be expensive to establish, maintain and wind up, and reporting can be complex. If directors fail to meet their legal obligations, they may be held personally liable for the company’s debts. Note also that the profits distributed to shareholders are taxable. Another structure to consider is that of a trust. A trust is formed when a trustee holds the assets and runs the business, distributes incomes to beneficiaries, and follows the rules of the trust deed. Consider a trust if more than one family is involved in running the business. Trust entities are effective as limited liability is possible if a corporate trustee is appointed, there can be flexibility in income distributions

among beneficiaries and trust income is generally taxed as the income of an individual. This structure is complex, and can be expensive to establish and maintain. Problems can be encountered when borrowing, and the powers of trustees are restricted by the trust deed. Once you decide which structure to use, the next challenge is selecting the right person to take over the business, and deciding which family members will take on which roles. A family business can give family members the scope to consider the business as a career option without creating an expectation that they must be involved. There’s always the opportunity to pass the business down to family members of the next generation. While there’s always a risk of disagreements and friction among family members in business, some of the most successful businesses have been run by families. If everyone has clearly defined roles, and you have an effective dispute-management system, a good understanding of business, and maintain respect for one another, you shouldn’t go wrong.

WARNING! NEW BUZZWORD DETECTED.

Ecosystem; a system formed by the interaction of a community of organisms with their environment. All these software companies love a buzzword don’t they! Whilst ‘The Cloud’ is still the most popular, BEHOLD: Your business ‘Ecosystem’ is about to take over.

… the business owner now has the ability to create their own personal business ecosystem by choosing a select group of interacting software programs to suit their specific needs.

Pick any business no matter what the industry is, and in essence that business is made up of a set procedures and processes that result in the delivery of either a product or service for the end customer (Think of the warehouse processes, the shopfront procedures, and all that other paperwork). So what exactly is a business ecosystem? The ecosystem is the segmented view of a businesses processes and in a software sense, it is about matching particular software products to those business processes. By breaking each of those processes down and grouping the similar ones together, consultants have been able to better construct and streamline the delivery of a business’s products. Historically the more important piece of software for a business has been the accounting system (purely from a tax compliance perspective) and depending on the size of your organisation and its requirements you might have gone with an ‘off-the-shelf’ option of say QuickBooks or MYOB. Within these programs they provide the ability to record purchases and sales, payroll, inventory and taxes. These

programs operated on a kind of ‘one size fits all’ approach and you have the option of take it or leave it, unless you require (and can afford) a program along the likes of SAP. Your solicitor or accountant might utilise a time billing system that allows them to record time in 6 minute increments, to allocate each staff members work to the appropriate client that they are working on. Hairdressers use a CRM (Customer Relationship Management) system to diarise appointments and sms reminders. The problem with each of these programs is that they have a specific industry need that they meet – but they don’t ‘talk’ to the other software that the business uses. They don’t have the all-in-one ability to handle ALL of the businesses affairs like managing tax, payroll, sales, customer information and so on. HOWEVER, now that we are living ‘in the cloud’ (buzzzz…) more and more processspecific software platforms are being developed which suit many industries and will sync information with other software programs, in real time and the opportunities are vast.

A business can now have: Time Billing software that talks to the Accounting software that talks to the Payroll software that talks to the Inventory Management software that talks to the Point of Sale software which is linked to a CRM. So why would you want multiple programs in your business? The benefits for management is the availability of real time information for reports and can monitor staffing levels, stock levels, daily sales and much, much more. Other business wide benefits are the time saving efficiencies; no more duplication of data entry, no unnecessary wasted time waiting for another team to complete their administration. There is also the technology aspect, where staff can work on-site or from home, on their various devices. But the real benefit is the business owner now has the ability to create their own personal business ecosystem by choosing a select group of interacting software programs to suit their specific needs. What would your ideal business ecosystem look like for your business?

WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT YOUR BEARD? Beards are easy to wear, time saving, and it’s just about the most on-trend accessory you can pull on this year. WHY DO YOU HAVE A BEARD? Refer to last name. ANY TIPS FOR KEEPING YOUR BEARD LOOKING GOOD? You have to take care of your beard, if you don’t pay any attention to your beard, pretty soon, you’re going to look like a wanderer from the Alaskan wilderness. Try not to over-analyse it. Nothing to manicured or manscaped, you want to look like you’ve let it go a little. Also a good beard oil will help soften the beard, give it a nice shine and moisturise the skin and the beard. Moustache wax will also help with styling your moe. ANYTHING ELSE YOU’D LIKE TO ADD ABOUT YOUR BEARD? It’s a hard truth, but not all guys can grow a beard. It’s just a matter of genetics. If it’s been two or three months, and it’s still patchy and scraggly, it’s not going to get better, let it go, shave it off, and move on.

I am growing it as part of my Oktoberfest costume and for the Oktoberfest Beard Meister competition that I have no chance of winning, unless there is a patchy beard category, plus secretly wish I was in the Kelly gang. ANY TIPS FOR KEEPING YOUR BEARD LOOKING GOOD? Conditioner helps keep it comfortable. ANYTHING ELSE YOU’D LIKE TO ADD ABOUT YOUR BEARD? WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT YOUR BEARD? I like that it’s a point of difference. It’s a shame that for so long society has depicted a clean shaven man as a more respectable member of society. WHY DO YOU HAVE A BEARD? Initially a few gents and myself grew our beards as a bet, now I can’t imagine myself without one. It’s definitely a conversation starter with pretty much everyone I meet. ANY TIPS FOR KEEPING YOUR BEARD LOOKING GOOD? I don’t like to get caught up with extensive manscaping, a weekly trim and a few good products like Guise iFashion Grooming Creme does the trick. ANYTHING ELSE YOU’D LIKE TO ADD ABOUT YOUR BEARD? A tip for gents wanting to grow out their beards would be, every time you consider shaving off your beard think about it 1 day for every month you have had your beard. Also most importantly when two beards cross paths, the largest beard always has the right of way.

GENTLEMEN’S GROOMING GUIDE | MODERN MAN

BLADE RUNNER

TIPS AND ADVICE FOR YOUR GROOMING PLEASURE

TIPS • For an extra thick beard use a warm face cloth compress to soften it in addition to a warm shower before shaving. Change blades as necessary, as they’ll dull much quicker than with a thin beard. • Razor burn can be easily prevented if the very last strokes on your face with the razor are with the grain, not against it. The strokes of the razor blade actually change the way your pores will grow the new hair. As such, you want to be sure to ‘reset’ the grain of your beard by ensuring the last strokes are with the grain, or top to bottom. • If you have acne and need to shave an area, test both an electric and a safety razor to see which is more comfortable. When using a safety razor, soften the hair with warm soap and water and then shave as lightly as possible. Always start with a sharp blade. For many with sensitive skin, an electric razor is the best option. • Some men prefer washing their faces and even shaving while in the shower. The steam from the shower helps prepare the face and beard, and the force of the shower rinsing your face after shaving soothes any minor nicks that might happen. • A blade that’s been used a few times is a more gentle on the face than a brand new one. It’s easy to apply too much pressure and a sharper blade will cut the skin more readily than one that’s slightly used. • If using a mirror to shave in the shower put a little bit of shampoo on the mirror to prevent fogging up from the steam. • Shave often, perhaps once every couple days to keep your hairs from thickening and establishing. The more consistently you shave, the better the quality of your shaves will be, and the better your complexion: Shaving removes dead skin and keeps pores from clogging, especially if you practice good hygiene after shaving. • Some men will find that a sharp straight razor (standard issue) and just hot water running over the face, i.e. in a shower, can get a significantly better shave using no soap, oil or shaving creams. ADVICE • Use caution around any natural bumps in your skin, like around moles and your Adam’s apple. • Avoid shaving against the grain if you can, as this causes beveling of the whiskers, which can lead to ingrown hairs, and other complications. If you MUST shave against the grain shave with the grain to start, then reapply shaving cream and shave along the grain. • You should probably avoid a boar bristle shaving brush if your skin is sensitive or oily. There are many shave creams on the market; choose one that you like that’s right for your skin type. Badger bristle is the preferred shaving brush bristle. You can also use a soft cosmetic blush brush if your skin is extremely sensitive, although if your skin is that sensitive, you’re probably going to use an electric razor.

MOVEMBER 101 WHO The Movember Foundation is the leading global organisation committed to changing the face of men’s health. They achieve this by challenging men to grow moustaches during Movember (the month formerly known as November) to raise funds and spark conversations for prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health problems. Thanks to the support of more than four million Mo Bros and Mo Sistas, Movember has raised $576 million and funded around 800 programs in 21 countries. WHERE Mo growth is seen around the world each November. This year, 21 countries will officially support the hairy fight. To view the full list and for live registration and fundraising tallies visit Leaderboards. HOW Mo Bros (guys who grow a Mo) sign up online at movember.com. Starting cleanshaven on November 1st, Mo Bros donate their top lip for 30 days by growing a moustache to raise funds and start conversations about men’s health. Women, known as Mo Sistas, play a key supporting role by signing up as team captains, recruiting Mo Bros, helping to raise funds and encouraging the men in their life to take action when it comes to their health. WHY Men are typically more indifferent towards their health when compared to the efforts of women who proactively manage and publicly address their health concerns. As a result, levels of awareness, understanding and funding support for men’s health issues lag significantly behind that of other causes. Using the moustache as a catalyst for conversation, Movember hopes to bring about change by providing men the opportunity to learn and talk about their health more openly and by encouraging men to take action.

ALL ABOARD FOR

BOLLY WOOD IF MADELEINE DYER’S FACE LOOKS FAMILIAR THAT’S BECAUSE SHE’S ONE OF OUR OWN. THE TALENTED ACTRESS RECENTLY RETURNED HOME TO FILM A BOLLYWOOD-STYLE SHORT MOVIE AND HONEYMOON ON MAGNETIC ISLAND.

MADELEINE DYER, and her sister Harriet, were stand-outs in Townsville Grammar School musicals and are now blazing their own paths in the entertainment industry. Harriet as Patricia Saunders in TV series Love Child and Madeleine as a writer/producer and actress, who recently returned to Townsville to shoot Departure Lounge – A Bollywood Affair, penned by local Ross Thomas. The romantic comedy about fly-in, fly-out miners was shot at the Townsville Airport and is a feel-good short film featuring Bollywood dancing and a cameo by none other than Bob Katter. Madeleine and her partner Daniel Mulvihill, who recently wed in Melbourne, play the leads – Mel and Charlie. “I must say when Dan proposed to me as Charlie in the film it was pretty exciting. I got that feeling all over again,” Mel says. “Thanks to Departure Lounge I got to have my man get down on one knee and propose in the traditional way. In real life, he kinda slid the ring at me.” It was their fourth-year anniversary and the couple had just finished work. “I’d done all the ring stuff without Maddy knowing, which was hard. I had to get a friend to give me the money because Maddy’s so on top of our accounts,” Dan says. “Long story short, we were driving to dinner and I couldn’t wait till we got there, so I just came out with ‘Madeleine, you know I love you… Will you unconventionally marry me?’ Then I gave her the ring quickly and was like ‘I gotta drive…’ We were in the back streets so Maddy was trying to get a bit of light to see the ring.

“So thanks to Departure Lounge for giving me a chance to propose to Maddy on bended knee and making me a romantic hero – well, sort of!” In real life versus reel life, Madeleine and Dan married at a “nice little Sex in the City-style bar” in Melbourne, then the best day of their lives was followed by one of the worst weeks as they got a terrible flu. The pair recovered just in time to board a plane to Townsville for Departure Lounge shooting. “Filming Departure Lounge in my home town has been a wonderful experience and now we’re looking forward to a honeymoon on Magnetic Island,” Madeleine says. The couple, who met when studying acting at the University of Southern Queensland, will then return to Melbourne where they’re working on a comedy pilot called Pacific Cove with Tony Rogers, who is known for Wilfred and new, hit web series How to Talk to Australians. “It’s about a prodigal son who returns to his small home town after he gets out of prison,” Madeleine says. “He tries to find work, connect with his dad and get back into society but it all goes pear-shaped from there.” Meanwhile, Madeleine’s sister Harriet has been working on feature film Ruben Guthrie with Brendan Cowell. “I think she’ll go to LA afterwards. She’s dating actor Ben Lawson (brother of Josh Lawson), and these brothers are Aussie exports making inroads in the US. Hopefully we’ll head there later and just ride her coat tails,” Madeleine laughs.

THE TIGHTROPE WALKER WITH SHANE FITZGERALD on leave at the time this article was written and due for submission, I’ve been handed the responsibility of keeping his seat as a regular DUO columnist warm. Shane has taken a week off, though as is his nature, he won’t be slowing down or watching the days slip by while sipping piña coladas by the beach. Rather, he’ll be stepping straight in to another institution in Townsville’s arts and cultural scene – Umbrella Studio contemporary arts – to assist his wife Holly Grech with the installation of a brand new body of work. It seems fitting then that I take the opportunity to share some insights about Holly’s practice, and the stunning major exhibition she has been working towards for the past 12 months. Entitled An Australian Story: These are the hues of the land I love, this exhibition is a photographic celebration of the Australian landscape with a difference. Grech is a photographer with an acute eye for colour and composition, and with a particular penchant for macro photography. She is both progressive, and a traditionalist; achieving emotive, semi-abstract imagery while remaining true to her preference for working, “with what is captured rather than introducing digital elements, as I feel this does not align with the foundations of photography.” Of most interest is the fact that these ‘landscape photographs’ aren’t really photographs of the landscape at all. In his catalogue essay for the exhibition, Robert Heather astutely observed that “The artist has successfully created the strong impression of the natural environment that she aims to celebrate… This exhibition sets out to celebrate the Australian bush and landscape through words and images, while on another

level it challenges us to identify what these things actually are, whether we can clearly identify them and what they mean to us the viewer.”

02

Grech’s photographs are largely inspired by and partnered with the written works of colonial Australian poets such as Edwin James Brady, Henry Lawson, Dorothea Mackellar, Banjo Paterson, and Diane de St Hilaire Simmonds, amongst others. In doing so, her images transcend their original contex t and are inseparable from the eloquent descriptions of the Australian landscape provided by some of our nation’s finest wordsmiths. This is perhaps best evidenced in the 2 metre long work Australian Story VIII – Blue cloud shadows… No longer do we see the image as a scuffed concrete wall or floor with many years’ history of wear and traffic, belonging squarely in our modern, urban streetscape. Rather, when paired with a select excerpt from Dorothea Mackellar’s The Colours Of Light, we are transported. “Golden wattle, and golden broom, Silver stars of the rosewood bloom; Amber sunshine, and smoke-blue shade: Opal colours that glow and fade; On the gold of the upland grass Blue cloud-shadows that swiftly pass; Wood-smoke blown in an azure mist; Hills of tenuous amethyst. . .” In taking in the work, we can easily picture ourselves looking out wistfully at dusk to the mist swept horizon of the Australian bush. Reflections of the blue clouds and stars are caught below the horizon, perhaps on the thick fog or a placid lake. This exhibition has been a labour of love for Grech over the past 12 months, though as a colleague

94 DUO MAGAZINE OCTOBER 2014 duomagazine.com.au

at Gallery Services, I can attest to the fact that it has indeed been a labour. As someone whose own arts practice has fallen by the wayside under the demands of being an arts worker, I commend Holly for walking the tightrope between the two demands and making it to the other side. Being a tightrope walker demands balance, courage, an understanding of the risk and reward, and just a dash of insanity. In delivering An Australian Story: These are the hues of the land I love, Holly has exhibited all of these necessary qualities where many others in the arts sector before her have tried and failed. An Australian Story: These are the hues of the land I love is on display at Umbrella Studio contemporary arts until 2 November 2014, and I encourage everyone to make sure they take the time to see this new vision of the Australian landscape. FROM PADDOCK TO PLATE

KYMBO WESTCOTT WILL BE SERVING UP BEEF AND LAMB IN HIS PALEO CAFÉ FROM HIS VERY OWN FARM. IT’S A WONDERFUL THOUGHT – to eat a piece of meat and know exactly how it was raised and where it has come from. But in modern times, it is a rarity to know anything about the food we consume. Kymbo Westcott, however owner of Paleo Café in Townsville, is changing all that. He is launching a new concept in late October, From Paddock to Plate, whereby he will serve beef and lamb from his very own farm. “I’m really excited to say I know where this beef and lamb has come from,” says Kymbo, whose family have Catumnal Station, a 56,000 hectare cattle and sheep farm. “I’ve mustered this beef, I’ve handled them in the cattle yard [and] I’ve branded them.” This is something Kymbo has wanted to do since he first opened his Paleo Café on Flinders Street earlier this year. “Because Paleo is about using things that are in season; using the whole beast, and eating grass-fed cattle and sheep from the farm and wild caught fish, I always wanted to bring my home-bred cattle and sheep into the café,” explains Kymbo.

98 DUO MAGAZINE OCTOBER 2014 duomagazine.com.au

“Each week the special will change to a different cut of beef or lamb,” says Kymbo, who says he takes full responsibility for the quality of meat. “[Customers] will be sampling something I have put my heart and soul into. The buck will stop with me.” The Westcott family has owned Catumnal Station, located south of Hughenden in northwest Queensland, for over 102 years. It is named after the area in Victoria where his family originated. After managing the farm for the past 10 years, Kymbo handed over the reins to his mum and dad when he opened the café earlier this year. “We’ve been over 100 years on the land,” says Kymbo. “So we’re bringing over 100 years of knowledge into a café in Townsville.” While Kymbo and his team are still determining the specials that will showcase his family’s cattle and sheep, he has shared with us a taste of what is to come. “The starting dishes will include beef carpaccio on a bed of salad leaves with a ginger and orange dressing; 250g rib eye steak wrapped in smoked bacon, cooked to your

liking, and served with a Paleo version of the classic Dianne Sauce; and my idea of the perfect burger – an outback Paleo burger.” From Paddock to Plate launches later this month and will hopefully be an ongoing initiative. It promises to be a real treat for anyone who cares about where their food has come from – or anyone who wants to enjoy high quality, locally sourced beef and lamb. Paleo Café is located at 373 – 383 Flinders Street City Lane, Townsville and is open Monday – Sunday from 7am – 3pm.

ROASTED SALMON WITH NYC CELERIAC Undervalued... it happens to vegetables just like it happens to people at work, or in relationships. Celeriac’s only role seems to be as a purée under beef or game, or as crunchy batons in a remoulade. Its versatility and sheer deliciousness – somewhere between parsnip and celery – is seldom seen elsewhere. Yet it makes a delicious creamy soup and is really outstanding used instead of potatoes in a mash. Everything in this dish has one role – to make the celeriac look good! It is based on a simple bowl of celeriac purée slathered with melted butter and vinegary hot sauce that I ate in Brooklyn on one of those magical, memorable nights when a table for six ended up as a table for 38, as more and more of the MasterChef crew stumbled in out of the night. The place was run by Aussies, so they seemed to understand that sort of thing. I don’t remember getting home but I do remember the celeriac.

For the salmon, firstly pat the skin dry with paper towel. Rub the skin with salt flakes and set it aside for at least 30 minutes while you attend to the other elements of this dish. The salt helps draw the moisture from the skin. When it’s time to cook, scrape the salt off with the blunt side of a knife. For the fennel, preheat the oven to 180°C. Toss the fennel halves or quarters generously with olive oil. Lay on a baking tray with the thyme and garlic. Bake for 30–40 minutes until cooked and coloured, turning once at the halfway mark. Add the garlic cloves at this point. When it’s all cooked, remove from the oven and drizzle over the red wine vinegar. Cook the celeriac while the fennel is in the oven. Put it in a pan with the milk and bring to the boil. Skim the scum, if there is any. When soft (after about 20 minutes), drain and reserve the milk. Blitz with a stick blender, using enough of the reserved milk to make it smooth and creamy. Add the cream and season to taste. Always start the fish in a cold, wide-based, heavy frying pan with a touch of oil and bring it to a medium heat. Cook skin-side down for 4–5 minutes until the skin is golden and crispy. Gently flip the fish over and continue cooking for a further 2–3 minutes, depending how you like your fish cooked. Remember the fish will keep cooking through with residual heat once off the flame. To serve, smear a generous mound of celeriac purée over a large share platter. Dot with butter, which will melt, and shake a few drops of Tabasco over the celeriac. Lay the fennel and garlic over the top and crown with the salmon fillets.

AKA: Mr D. It was a Friday night thing… it’s just sort of stuck. Most treasured item: Memories. Starting from arriving in Oz and getting a job at Australia’s only Contiki resort in the Whitsundays. For a young Kiwi from Christchurch it was a far cry from home... and we got paid! Amazing two years. You in three words: OFF THE CUFF. Why you get out of bed: To catch another Townsville sunrise. Living on the Strand they’re too good too miss... and I’m a morning person. As a teen I was a milkboy and that meant 4.30am starts. Most memorable moment: A few years ago sailing in the Whitsundays with the sails set and whales swimming beside us. (I dreamed of chartering a yacht myself one day working on the island). It was a dream realised and champagne stuff. What you love about where you live: I’ve seen this city grow and grow up. It has a whole new life to it. Great food, new places, a revitalised CBD and it’s all happening thanks to City Lane (a great development). Flinders Street West and the weather we have to put up with for nine months of the year. And the Island is only quick trip away. You always meant to: Make it to England. Got distracted by the Whitsundays where I lived for two years. One day! Where are you from: Wellington and Christchurch, New Zealand. Best dish: Anything by Wayne at the Garden of Eating. A great little restaurant and a wonderful couple. Kiwis too! Your biggest inspiration: My parents, six kids, the biggest vegie garden and we each had a patch. And a few mates who’ve been with me on the journey. Ideal dinner guests: My relatives. Our get togethers are legendary. Your philosophy: Lets do this.. As a child, what did you think you’d be doing at this age: Always loved the sea, so working on the Love Boat. Parting words: Each day I hear a new story, and it inspires me to keep asking...

My dad for fighting cancer so courageously and showing us how to live each day and my mum for being the quiet, strong warrior, always in the background but achieving so much. Your must-have gadget: iPhone The last book you read: The Dive Master Manual – to pass my exam. Your philosophy: “Dream out Loud” – get out and do it, no matter what people say. As a child, what did you think you’d be doing at this age: I wanted to be a hairdresser when I was young. Where are you from: Ballarat Victoria but spent most of my life in Townsville. You wish… I wish there was a cure for Meningococcal Disease. It’s been 15 years since my little sister Ebony passed away only days after her 18th birthday due to Meningococcal Disease. The infection occurs when meningococcal bacteria invade the body from the throat or nose. So far this year in Queensland, 23 people have been diagnosed with meningococcal disease, compared with 33 for the whole of 2013. Your biggest inspiration: Definitely my parents, Joan and Bill. You’d change this about yourself: My obsessive perfectionism! Parting words: Do one act of kindness each day of the year and change 365 lives.

AKA: Boothy. Most treasured item: My partner Erica. She is wonderful and supportive. You in three words: Passionate, inventive, adventurous. Why you get out of bed: To help people with their technology and technical issues… and to stop my alarm! Most memorable moment: Traveling around all of New Zealand with Erica and some good friends. What you love about where you live: All the friends I’ve made in my time here so far. You always meant to: Travel to Europe and Asia and I plan on getting there in the future. You drive a: I’m currently driving a Toyota Aurion. It’s the nicest car I’ve owned so far. Where are you from: Brisbane but moved here when I was very young with my parents. Best dish: I can cook 2 minute noodles in under 2 minutes. You wish… probably the same as most people. Win the lottery and go travelling. Your biggest inspiration: My father. I’ve always seen him put in 110% into everything he does. You’d change this about yourself: Fitness and health are two things I’m always looking to improve. Ideal dinner guests: Arnold Schwarzenegger. I have always admired what he has achieved and where he came from. One of the only people I think I would be overawed by. Your must-have gadget: Like everyone these days I’d be lost without my smart phone. The last book you read: I enjoy Matthew Riley’s books. They’re like reading an action movie that you can’t put down. Your philosophy: “Doubt kills more dreams than failure ever will.” As a child, what did you think you’d be doing at this age: I always thought I’d be repairing things for people as I always enjoyed fixing broken toys as a kid. Parting words: “Silence will fall.” ~ Dr Who

HONEY GOES NATIVE IN TOWNSVILLE

LOCAL AUTHOR, EJ FRASER HAS RECENTLY RELEASED HER NEW BOOK; GO NATIVE THROUGH BOOKPAL AUSTRALIA.

“HONEY IS TOWNSVILLE BORN, BRED AND BASTARD PROOF.” EL FRASER

114 DUO MAGAZINE OCTOBER 2014 duomagazine.com.au

LOCAL AUTHOR, EJ FRASER has recently released her new book; Go Native through Bookpal Australia. In this ‘thinking woman’ adventure novel, heroine Honey Andrews and her best mate JT score the Holy Grail of film projects – filming a bunch of muscle bound military men playing games on a tropical island.

Honey and her motley crew of friends are thrown headfirst into the military world where they encounter their worst nightmares – acronyms, excessive exercise in the midst of a Townsville heat wave, a war mongering sociopath, Diablo, who is determined to start a real war, and one ferocious category five cyclone christened Fritz.

Born in Papua New Guinea and bred in Townsville, EJ Fraser is a first time novelist and writing addict. She lives with her best mate Tokyo, a Pomeranian who loves nothing more than causing strife and driving his owner to drink copious amounts of wine. Her down time is spent socialising with a bunch of Townsvillians and travelling in a deluded dream of world domination all whilst tapping away on her laptop in pursuit of creating a masterpiece.

EJ commented, “Go Native is a fast moving adventure with just the right amount of humour and hot steamy romance. It features thrilling combat and steamy love affairs. And Honey has a knack for getting into some very sticky situations. I set my first novel on Magnetic Island since it’s the most beautiful location in the world. My second novel, Go Troppo, will be set in Townsville where my heart resides.”

ABOUT THE BOOK: Honey, JT and their crew set out on a mission to document a troop of Australian Defence Force soldiers simulating War Island, a tropical haven twenty minutes by ferry from their hometown. The elite fighting force is led by a man codenamed Hunter, who never takes no for an answer.

Go Native is the first in a series of seven novels where Honey Andrews takes us on a series of North Queensland centric adventures.
