MY LIFE AND LOVE OF MOWING LAWNS In another first for us, our front cover this issue is used for a very worthwhile promotion – Townsville City Council’s campaign to reduce water usage. The concept features horticultural genius ‘Bradley the Lawn Tamer’ and you can read how to grow a lawn on little water on Page 14. Living in apartments I haven’t had to mow for about 10 years now but like most of us, many weekends of my childhood, teens and adult life was spent mowing the grass. And I actually loved it. From getting the mower out of the shed, pouring in the petrol, (hopefully) starting first couple of pulls, to hosing the grass off and putting the mower away all spic and span at the end. But two other elements made the whole ‘exercise’ something to look forward to. I always do the box. Start on the outside and walk in a clockwise direction around the box in an ever decreasing circle. Lining up the left front wheel with the right hand edge of the previous pass. Critical. This put me into the first element I looked forward to – meditation. My mind would wander. What was for dinner? What was on TV tonight? Deep stuff. The second element was getting creative ideas that (I thought) were brilliant. Like ‘World Championship Mowing’. Let’s face it, there’s nothing quite like the joy and satisfaction of finishing the mowing and singing out to the boss (insert your own relevant person here) to come and have a look at the great job I did. Who doesn’t feel pride when you see how straight the lines are, how you didn’t miss any bits and you didn’t run over anything you shouldn’t have. World Championship Mowing. It could happen. Amateurs and professionals, different age groups, teams and individuals. There’d be huge events all over the world. The Victorious Victas (get it?). Big name sponsors and champions winning prizes like Jason Day. I’ve put it out there. You should start training this weekend! Some people and things I appreciate this month; Stacey’s love and support, our new Holden Cruze, House of Cards, Tony and his team at Arrows, Jetstar’s direct flights to Bali, my pusher (engine-less) mower, my Mum. Hope you enjoy your Eco Family issue of DUO Magazine! SCOTT MORRISON | PUBLISHER

October
HOROSCOPE
Libra
23 SEPTEMBER – 22 OCTOBER
You’ve come a long way, Libra. Acknowledge your amazing progress; with the best yet to come. This could be one of the greatest years of the decade, when you find yourself surrounded by love, friendship and prosperity. At work, the more you do – the more you get to do. For some, an unexpected inheritance helps clear old debts. Whatever way you look at it, you’re now well and truly rewarded for past efforts.
Scorpio
Sagittarius
Capricorn
Aquarius
23 OCTOBER – 21 NOVEMBER
22 NOVEMBER - 21 DECEMBER
22 DECEMBER – 19 JANUARY
20 JANUARY – 18 FEBRUARY
Take a break this month, Scorpio, somewhere away from the madding crowd. A week or so is all that’s needed. In the meantime – should others make demands, oblige sensitively but sensibly – you have your own life to lead. The planets introduce new friendships and colleagues. Romantic passions also look set to soar.
Though you’d prefer to shift into neutral, October asks that you look at ongoing issues. You’ve been doing it tough for some time. Illness, work pressures, family matters – too many demands have drained your spirit. Thankfully, better moments lie ahead. Late month offers financial opportunities, new love or renewed sentimental ties.
This month you have more time to help others. But don’t let anyone convince you that it’s simply a case of parting with cash. Your wisdom will provide better guidance than just signing a cheque. Late October obliges with fun. With a mischievous gust providing a friendly up draught, spread your wings and soar towards heady heights.
Aquarians live the paradox of being people-orientated but are easily stressed in domineering company. So, if someone tries to bolt a ball and chain around your thoughts or actions, you may be tempted to make a run for it. Truth is, many consider your plans to be unrealistic – but don’t forget these are your dreams. Go make them happen.

Gemini
19 FEBRUARY – 20 MARCH
21 MARCH – 20 APRIL
21 APRIL – 20 MAY
21 MAY – 21 JUNE
Why can’t every month be like this, with manna pouring from the heavens and success ready to soar? With the cosmos offering its financial stamp of approval, pitch your dream projects to anyone willing to listen. You’ll be surprised where that break comes from. If there’s a natural pause mid month, clear time for carnal delights.
This is more like it! A month drenched in possibilities. Advertise your availability and you should be showered with romantic reciprocation. For some, new love simply happens; while others are tempted to rekindle an old flame. New friendships could also be forged. Health, wealth and career benefit from a planetary thumbs up.
At times, it takes a touch of adversity to force an unwilling Taurean hand. When you refuse to instigate change – the cosmos will do it for you. So, October brings a time of renewal. Jupiter encourages work skills. Mars revives romance, while Venus pushes for material and financial gain. Travel’s likely too – so get out of your rut while you can.
It’s the ethereal, rather than the material, that captures your imagination this month. Now that the pressure’s off work for a while, the focus steers towards spirituality and home. Creativity, love and children is where your attention falls. You work hard for your family, so take time to enjoy them too. Dreams have significant meanings.
Cancer

Virgo
22 JUNE - 22 JULY
23 JULY – 22 AUGUST
23 AUGUST – 22 SEPTEMBER
October finds you busy. The people you meet, the circumstances you embrace, the directions you take – they all steer you towards a richer, more fulfilling life. Tired of the tried-and-tested, you become more adventurous. One warning: if an issue becomes a tad too personal, you may become surprisingly aggressive.
Just when you thought it was you against the world, along comes a planetary ally or two. Not a moment too soon. Once you realise that not everyone’s out to get you, it’s onwards and upwards. There are, however, some conditions. Give the past a decent burial and start concentrating on life as you’d like it.
Early October places optimism on hold. Get rich quick schemes are especially worth avoiding, with the cosmos ready to deal out harsh lessons in financial management. Money matters need to be handled with caution and integrity. The same for past lovers. A potential rival could spark jealousy or anger. Someone’s feeling insecure.

Meet
the McCathie Family When the McCathie family (Sandy, her husband Dean and their kids Stella, 8, and Calem, 4) moved into their North Ward home four years ago, one of the first things they did was plan how they wanted their garden to function. “We’re great believers in making urban spaces welcoming for native wildlife,” says Sandy. “Ideally every residence would have at least some of their non-built area providing food (ie flowers, nectar, fruits, leaves) and habitats (places to safely forage, rest and nest) for native wildlife.” To this end the McCathie family set about planting local native grasses, vines, shrubs and trees to provide food and shelter to native birds, lizards, possums and butterflies. They even went so far as to ensure they flowered at different times of year to provide a year-round food supply.
“WE’RE GREAT BELIEVERS IN MAKING URBAN SPACES WELCOMING FOR NATIVE WILDLIFE.”
Offering views of wattles, grevilleas and hot pink bougainvillea from the kitchen window, treetop views from the main bedroom and a shady bush garden from the home office, the Hayes Street address is a beauty to behold. Not to mention a grassed play area bordered by gardenias from the back patio, a veggie patch and tropical food forest beyond.
In their produce patch, the family has success (despite giving “very little” attention) with parsley, eggplant, spring onions, cherry tomatoes, chillies, basil, thyme, tarragon and, in winter, lettuces. In the tropical food forest along the back and side fence, they have a mandarin tree, lemon tree, lime, abiu, macadamia, lychee, (dwarf) mango, madrono (“really yummy”), saba nut, pomegranate, jaboticaba and bananas. “We don’t have a cat or a dog but we have a plethora of birds. We’ve tried counting and stopped at around 30 different species,” Sandy says. “Having the sound of birds in our garden and watching them feed on flowers, seeds and nectar is so relaxing and such a treat.”

the Connell Family Doing a lot of little things to help the environment adds up, as the Connell family (Adam, his wife Megan and their kids Finn, 4, and Zack, 2) can attest. Based in West End, the Connell family loves visiting farmers markets so they we can buy straight from the producer and aims to reduce, reuse, re-purpose, recycle and reinvent wherever they can. “We love our recycled pallet furniture and our repurposed shipping container shed,” Adam says. “We also have a range of composting activities happening, from green waste and food waste composting to our best food waste recyclers — our chickens Pepper, Salty and George, who in return give us the greatest eggs you’ll ever eat!” The Connells spend a lot of time in their garden growing their own food — their back garden is dedicated to edible foods and their front garden is dedicated to native trees, bushes and grasses to attract birds. Their house has solar panels and they have reduced their energy consumption by buying energy-smart appliances. The family also manages to run just one car, with Mum and Dad taking it in turns to cycle to work.
“OUR BEST FOOD WASTE RECYCLERS ARE OUR CHICKENS PEPPER, SALTY AND GEORGE.”
Adam and Megan met in Bowen in 2009 at a school’s environmental activity day. Megan was there to teach kids about protecting the Great Barrier Reef while Adam was there to talk about water quality monitoring. They recently got married on the anniversary of their meeting. The couple took steps to make their wedding as eco-friendly as possible by serving food on (compostable) bamboo plates with wooden forks, using recycled materials to make decorations, and all of their drinks were served in mismatched (recycled) jars Megan spent a year collecting. “Being sustainable is not something we ‘are’ or ‘aren’t’,” Adam says. “It’s something we’re trying to be. It’s all about taking as many little eco steps as possible, while keeping in mind the bigger picture — a better future for the earth that our little boys, and everyone else’s children will inherit.”

Meet
the Funkhouser Family Having grown up in a household where her father’s giant summer garden meant there was plenty of food to can for the winter gave Sarah Funkhouser a love of fresh produce from an early age. Sarah’s Zimbabwean husband Tim shares her passion for looking after the land and together they’ve always had a garden on whichever continent they’ve lived in. “Some six years ago I got a ‘bee in my bonnet’ when I walked down the supermarket aisles looking at the amount of packaging within packaging,” Sarah says. “Our son Lucas was 8 and wanted to eat what the other kids were eating in his lunch box. It wasn’t going to happen. I hated that there were big bags of chips with 10 smaller bags of chips inside. The waste (and junk food, let’s be honest) fuelled me to make a change. “Cooking with fresh ingredients is one way to make a difference.”
“COOKING WITH FRESH INGREDIENTS IS ONE WAY TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE.”
Knowing that Australia was producing fabulous food (like beautiful olive oils and biodynamic rice), yet so much of what she saw in the supermarket was from overseas, Sarah set about contacting small producers around the Eastern seaboard. She asked if they would sell their products in small bulk orders so she and her friends and neighbours at Pallarenda could come and fill their containers to avoid excess packaging while choosing locally grown and produced food. Many said yes and Sarah has gone on to use their products when creating dishes for her own businesses Funk House Fine Foods.
“I started out making mostly organic homemade ‘grainolas’ as I call them,” Sarah says. “Slowly over the years it grew, thanks to dear friends who helped and small business owners willing to sell them at their independent shops. Nowadays, demand outweighs supply, so we have our own production kitchen and attached café in Garbutt (39 Meenan St). “If I can share anything, it’s this: educate your families not just on where food comes from, but on the impacts of packaging and how much healthier our country might be even if we all make one small change in our own household.”

This award reinforces the quality and craftsmanship that Watco Constructions’ strong reputation has been built on. “It is nice to receive industry recognition for our projects being of high quality,” says Ben Watkins, who founded the company over seven years ago in the Mackay region and moved the business to Townsville in 2012. “We really pride ourselves on attention to detail, quality craftsmanship and sustainable building practices.”

LOANS GO GREEN
HOME IMPROVEMENTS WITH A FOCUS ON ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY CAN BE FAST-TRACKED VIA GREEN LENDING. Whether it is for environmental concerns or the health of your wallet, once you have made the decision to go green the next step is to decide on how you are paying for it. For the past 5 years, Queensland Country Credit Union has supported Queenslanders install environmentally sustainable products into their homes via the Eco Smart Green Loan. An Eco Smart Green Loan is designed to support home owners increase the environmental sustainability of their home through improvements such as installing solar power, rain water tanks, roof insulation, solar hot water systems, invertor air conditioners and other sustainably-rated items. The loan also offers the added incentive of no upfront or ongoing maintenance fees that make it easier and cheaper for people to upgrade their homes to use less energy.
Product Manager Dion Matthews said that Queensland Country Credit Union’s Eco Smart Green Loan is popular as it offers flexibility. “People are attracted to the variety of environmental products that the loan covers. It is not just solar panels!” He added that the Eco Smart Green Loan provides people the opportunity to install a complete system or multiple environmentally friendly items and pay it off over a period of time. “We find that once approved for their Eco Smart Green Loan, people end up opting for a larger bank of solar panels or include other cost saving items at the same time, like solar hot water systems and roof insulation – as they can spread the cost over one-to-five years. A win-win for home owners as they get the benefit of lower utility bills and don’t have to pay a lump sum up front” Mr Matthews said.
“PEOPLE ARE ATTRACTED TO THE VARIETY OF ENVIRONMENTAL PRODUCTS THAT THE LOAN COVERS. IT IS NOT JUST SOLAR PANELS!” For more information, drop into your local Townsville Queensland Country Branch at Willows Shopping Centre, Aitkenvale (Queensland Country Centre, opposite Stockland), the Townsville Hospital , Magnetic Island or Deeragun Village – or call their friendly contact centre on 1800 075 078.

10 STEPS TO GREENER LIVING
GOING GREEN DOESN’T HAVE TO MEAN MAKING SWEEPING LIFE CHANGES. LITTLE THINGS CAN MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE. STEP 1 REDUCE YOUR CHEMICAL USE: Try to limit your exposure to inorganic (non-natural) chemicals. One way to do this is to use microfibre cleaning cloths with just a drop of detergent for tougher stains on benchtops or bicarb soda for cleaning grout in the shower.
clutter and things won’t get thrown out, and become landfill, in a short space of time.
STEP 2 PLANT SOME NATIVE TREES: They will give you clean air, greenery and maybe even some visiting native birds.
STEP 6 AVOID EXCESSIVE PACKAGING: Instead of buying individually wrapped items, buy a large portion and divide it into reusable containers.
STEP 3 REPAIR, DON’T REPLACE: While it may be tempting to throw out that broken table, ripped sofa or faded bookshelf, choosing to repair an item instead of replacing it is the more environmentally friendly approach.
STEP 7 USE LESS PLASTIC: Plastic bags and bottles are two of the most common items found in beach clean-ups along the Queensland coast and they’re harming our wildlife.
STEP 4 THINK ‘LESS IS MORE’: Not buying ‘stuff’ for the sake of it means your home will have less
STEP 5 BUY LOCAL OR DIY: When you grow your own food, or buy from your local farmer’s market, you cut down on the food miles it has travelled (reducing greenhouse gases).
STEP 8 GO PRE-LOVED, NOT NEW: Seek out secondhand furniture and enjoy it for its history and character.
STEP 9 GET SMART WITH SCRAPS: Don’t throw away your food scraps. Start a compost, a worm farm or get some chooks. STEP 10 PRINT WISELY: Set your printer’s default option to print double-sided.

GARAGE SALE TRAIL
KEEN TO REUSE, REDUCE AND RECYCLE? HERE’S YOUR CHANCE! THE TOWNSVILLE CITY COUNCIL’S GARAGE SALE TRAIL, ON OCTOBER 24, IS THE PERFECT EXCUSE FOR A SPRING CLEAN.
TOWNSVILLE households, schools and community groups are set to join hundreds of thousands of people across the country for the fifth annual Garage Sale Trail. The Townsville City Council will join about 150 other local councils for the national community and sustainability event on Saturday, October 24. The initiative was a huge success in Townsville last year with 258 garage sales happening simultaneously across the city. Smart City Sustainable Future Committee Chair Cr Vern Veitch says the Garage Sale
Trail is expecting more than 10,000 people to take part nationwide. “The Garage Sale Trail helps people to think creatively about how they can reuse items that might otherwise be put out for waste collection and possibly end up in landfill,” Cr Veitch says. “It’s a great way to get to know your neighbours and connect with the broader community while raising money for yourself or others.” Townsville Water and Waste Committee Chair Cr Ray Gartrell says waste

management is a big issue for all communities and this is a terrific way to make a difference. “One garage sale on its own won’t make a big difference, but if every garage in the country participates, imagine the difference that would make to landfill,” Cr Gartrell said. Registration (at garagesaletrail.com.au) is MADE LOCALLY POSSIBLE BY: free and includes a seller webpage that can be personalised by naming the garage sale and listing items that will be for sale on the day.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT
COME ON DOWN TO THE OLD COURT HOUSE ON WORLD FOOD DAY, OCTOBER 16, FOR SOME DISCO SOUP – A FUN MUSIC AND FOOD EVENT HIGHLIGHTING THE GLOBAL PROBLEM OF FOOD WASTE. THE FOOD RESCUE INITIATIVE AND TMPAS, with support from the Intercultural Centre, Food For Thought and many more, are proud to present Disco Soup — a tasty culinary act of protest against the senseless waste of food. At the Old Courthouse Theatre, on Friday 16 October, be a part of the Chop Chat n Dance from 1pm to 4pm. Bring your peelers, knives and chopping boards to help give ‘culinary misfits’ a chance. Last year, the total surplus of food redistributed was 118,250kg! From 5.30pm to 7pm you can enjoy a free vegan curry (and rice, herb/garlic baguette and fruit) and music. At 6.15pm Just Eat It, a multi-award-winning food waste story, will screen and don’t miss the chance to see the Areal Student Performance at 7pm, followed by open mic and fruit cycling (pedal your own smoothie) to the beat.

The first ‘Schnippeldisko’ (literally, ‘snippet disco’ in German), was organised in 2012 in Berlin by the Slow Food Youth Network. Since then ‘disco soup’ parties have popped up all over the globe under many creative names, but the same format: Unmarketable fruits and vegetables are collected from local grocery stores or markets and the produce is prepared into a large shared meal that’s eaten to the sounds of good music. On World Food Day, Disco Soups are held all over the planet uniting people to share food and reduce food waste.

A M AT T E R O F FA I T H WELL KNOWN FOR THEIR SERVICE TO THE CHURCH AND TOWNSVILLE COMMUNITY, THE HORNER FAMILY HAS STRONG TIES WITH CATHOLIC EDUCATION.
A great love of Townsville and the church has been passed down from generation to generation in the Horner clan. Currently 11 of the extended ‘Horner family’ work for the Catholic Church in diocesan and school roles across Townsville. This connection to the Catholic Church in Townsville has deep roots. “One of my maternal ancestors is Mary Ann Bell, who arrived in Townsville in 1870 and was one of the first European women in the town,” says Ross Horner, Director of Leadership and School Development at the Townsville Catholic Education Office. “Mary Ann was described in her obituary as ‘one of those brave stout-hearted Irish Catholic immigrants who contributed so much to lay, broaden and deepen the foundations of the Catholic Church in Australia…’” Mary Ann’s son went on to marry Louisa Kuhn, born of German immigrant parents. Louisa
converted to Catholicism and had a deep Catholic faith, which she shared proudly with her 10 children, one of whom was Lillian Walsh, mother to 14 including Ross’ mother Grace. Within this frame Grace’s children developed a deep affinity with all things Townsville and Catholic. “Our recently deceased Bishop Michael Putney loved this story and often commended our mother on her ‘fine effort’ in keeping her clan so connected to Church,” Ross says. Ross’ brother Barry Horner is Principal of St Anthony’s College, Deeragun, who added: “I’m very proud of my family. I believe the thing we do best is show respect for others, something taught to us by two very good parents who showed us how to live rather than telling us.” As Director of Leadership and School Development at the Townsville Catholic Education Office, Ross works with a highly motivated team, led by Executive Director Dr Cathy Day. “Together our
team ensures Townsville and our wider diocese have access to highly effective Catholic schools,” he says. A new school proposed for the corner of Shaw and Dalrymple Roads has a special connection for Ross as it was in this area Louisa Kuhn (Bell) grew up with her German immigrant parents. She and her family lived alongside the local Indigenous people to market garden produce for the growing Townsville population. “We hope to build our Shaw Catholic School to service the city’s growing population and will honour the traditional Indigenous owners as well as the faith of those who came to establish our country,” Ross says. “Like Mary Ann, Louisa, Lillian and Grace we have learned through their faith to work hard for our community. That we can do this while working for our Catholic Church is a privilege and an honour.” www.tsv.catholic.edu.au

THE SIMPLE LIFE (WHAT’S THAT?)
Getting back to basics is becoming more popular but how out of control do we have to feel before we acknowledge that we need to make this change.
I have been watching some television shows lately that have shown couples and families choosing a much simpler way of living. These changes have related to where they have chosen to live and how they have chosen to live their lives. Often it has involved rebelling against our current day world to a degree. At first, I was in two minds about their choices. I wasn’t sure if I admired their decision or felt that they were just running away from reality. As time goes on though I am really starting to admire this way of being and their strength in being leaders, not followers.
“Bigger and better seems to be our motivation but where is it getting us?
Around me I am seeing large amounts of stress and pressure in people’s lives. This pressure shows itself in many forms; lack of time, too many things to do, activity overload, material wealth stress and so on. I’m not even sure where this pressure has come from. All I know is that we seem to be a very different society in terms of the way we are living our lives, to 20 years ago. Some of this change is obviously for the better but some, not so much. We are in a time of increased levels of disease associated with stress and
rising numbers of people suffering from depression and anxiety. Bigger and better seems to be our motivation but where is it getting us? I think simplicity is the key if we continue down this slippery slope. We need to get back to basics and remember what is most important in life. I know that what is not important can easily disguise itself so that we think it is a ‘must’ in our lives. It is truly not important how many activities our children can do in any given week, whether our wardrobe is full of the latest fashion trends or if our house has a theatre room or not. We have somehow been duped into believing these things are important and have somehow attached our self-worth to them as well.
silence, reflecting upon our day and making changes for tomorrow, thinking about our true motivations in life, respecting our environment and helping someone in need. My husband and I tell our children that whatever they do in life is fine by us as long as they are a Humanitarian first. Simplicity does not mean that we, our partner or our families are missing out. It means that we are connecting to what is truly important but we must also stand up to the messages from society that tell us differently. This requires a lot of strength and courage. We also need to question why we are being told to live the life we currently are. What is the motivation behind it? I may sound cynical but I don’t think whatever we are being influenced by has our best interests at heart.
It may sound too simple but the important things are the people around us and how we connect to them and our environment. Simplicity goes hand in hand with these connections. We certainly do need to stop and smell the roses by having quality time with our family and friends, relishing

EWEN JONES MP | FEDERAL MEMBER FOR HERBERT
TO HAVE AND TO HOLD, FROM THIS DAY FORWARD… The big issue of our time is how to own your music. There, I have said it. To actually articulate this issue is half the problem. You see, I have been arguing with my children as to how we get our music. Too many people these days get “evaluation” copies of other people’s music and then turn it into a mixed bag of songs that you cannot get your head around what the artist was trying to say at the time.
“NOW, YOU LIVE IN FEAR OF YOUR COMPUTER CRASHING AND TAKING ALL THOSE MEMORIES WITH IT. SURE, THERE IS CLOUD TECHNOLOGY, BUT IT IS JUST NOT THE SAME.”
In Canberra I get to work early and go for a walk. At that time I listen to music. It has to be an album, a body of work. There are others who just listen to streaming services which just churn through a list of songs they think you might like, having provided the last 100 songs to which you listened, they feel sure you will feel the same way into the future. We must get back to what popular music actually means and teach our children that things of value come in packages, not a mixed bag. When I was a teenager, the act of running a needle across the vinyl acetate, while lying on your bed memorising the words to every song from the album sleeve is a time of self-indulgent sullenness missing from the world today. Remember when the quality of the sound rested entirely with your ability to get the equalizer just right, as it pitched through the specially bought speaker mix to get the right kind of bass, so the tweeter didn’t sound tinny? I do.
40 DUO MAGAZINE OCTOBER 2015 duomagazine.com.au
Today, speaker quality is controlled by tiny buds which are stuck into your ear. To your parents, you could be reading a book or studying, such is the silence from your room. Where is the angst? Where is the rebellion? I no longer own any vinyl. I am not a keeper of such things. I do, however, have a fair few CD’s and love them dearly. The issue for me now is that CD’s no longer carry the sort of information and sleeve knowledge we used to get on albums. Artists are quite happy to see you go to Google to get the lyrics, let alone provide some tour gossip or a letter from the band in which some cosmic message had been cryptically installed which can keep you talking with your friends for months about. Now, you live in fear of your computer crashing and taking all those memories with it. Sure, there is cloud technology, but it is just not the same. Being able to find the album you need to play should be serious business. Opening up a David Bowie album to find a Beatles disc is one of those happy times in your life when you realise that your mates rearranged all your records when they were there for the party a month ago. Oh, the hours spent cursing your best friends. Good times. That was when the music meant something…

“MOTHER NATURE PROVIDES US WITH WONDERFUL SENSORY ITEMS. ONE CAN NEVER WALK ALONG THE TRAIL OF SHELLS WITHOUT STOPPING TO TOUCH, POCKET OR EXCLAIM OVER A FEW.”
Take a walk outside. Nature provides us as parents with an abundance of play ideas. In order to explore all the wonderful opportunities around us to keep our children busy firstly you need to switch on and look. Once you have noticed you then need to dig deep and find your creative side. Let’s take something so simple as leaves. They are all around us, in plentiful supply. There is many different shapes and colours and they make one of the best sensory activities around. It doesn’t matter if your child is two or twelve years of age, with a bit of creativity you can find a range of different leaf activities for your child, older children can even help design the activities. Visually leaves are beautiful so find a basket and get outside and gather. They can be different colours and lots of different shapes. Tactilely they are soft if you pick them from the tree and as they dry out they harden and have that lovely crunchy feel. Auditory they make the crunch sound or swish as you move them around. Leaves are endless in their sensory benefits.

Mother nature provides us with wonderful sensory items, remember the last time you went to the beach – one can never walk along the trail of shells without stopping to touch, pocket or exclaim over a few. Or sitting by a creek with rocks, every child touches, rolls rocks over their palm and throws them into the water. All our sensory senses are stimulated, the feel, the smell, the sounds. So next time you are needing an activity to keep your children busy, take a walk outside, basket in hand and see what they can collect and find. Notice your environment as there is endless activities ready just waiting to be noticed and for you to be a bit creative.
Now for the fun activities, you can sort into colour, or by shape. As you do so pay attention to the sounds, the feelings, and add some words in like; crunky, soft, glossy. Did you know you can use leaves as a paint brush? You can paint leaves, notice how this feels. Older children can draw

MAKING A DIFFERENCE
WHAT IS THE ROLE OF THE TOWNSVILLE HOSPITAL FOUNDATION? As Queensland’s largest regional hospital, The Townsville Hospital serves a large geographical area, servicing communities from Papua New Guinea, south to Mackay and west of Mt Isa and is the referral centre for the whole of North Queensland for the specialities of paediatric surgery, paediatric neurosurgery and paediatric intensive care. Government funding to all hospitals in Queensland is generated towards infrastructure and capital works, the provision of core equipment and optimal health services. There is sometimes a short fall in funding required to purchase ancillary equipment. The Townsville Hospital Foundation steps into this gap providing funds for training, research and equipment to ensure Townsville Hospital remains at the forefront of patient care and at the leading edge of new technology and treatment methods. One of the main objectives of the hospital foundation is to advance, enrich and make a difference to health care in North Queensland. We do this with the support of the community who embrace the Foundation and donate generously towards its goals. Funds raised
by the Foundation are applied to purchase vital pieces of equipment, to improve patient facilities, provide additional training and education for our medical professionals and of course fund innovative research projects particularly relevant to North Queensland. Since its inception in 1989 the Foundation has been the conduit of millions of dollars in financial support to the Townsville Hospital and provides an army of 160 selfless volunteers who generously donate their time across all areas of the hospital. In 2014, the Foundation embarked on its biggest project to date, a full redevelopment of the current paediatric ward at the hospital. To raise these funds, we rely heavily on the support of the community. It is through the generosity of many individuals, businesses and community groups that we are able to assist the hospital in its patient care and lifesaving work. The Townsville Hospital Foundation is fully committed to improving the lives of local people and “making a difference” in our community. Originally an outback girl from Mount Isa, I moved to Townsville to study Marketing and Economics at University and absolutely fell in love with the city and the community. I‘ve been working with Townsville Enterprise for about four years and am now the Tourism Marketing and Strategic Projects Executive. Promoting the city I love is an incredible job and I’m fortunate to work for an organisation I’m so passionate about! Outside of work I volunteer with the Rural Fire Service which is a great way to meet new people and do something different to the usual office work, it’s also really rewarding to know I am contributing back to the local community in a positive way.
MY BAG I spotted this bag one day while shopping and decided I absolutely must have it! Whilst I didn’t need a new bag at the time, it was near my birthday so figured I would get it as a gift to myself. It is such a versatile bag that seems to go with everything I wear, which is great as I am not a huge fan of swapping bags each day. NOTEBOOK you never know when a good idea might come along. LINDT CHOCOLATE I am a huge sweet tooth and this is my favourite chocolate treat… plus its dark chocolate, so I figure it has some health benefits.

“The glamour, fun and excitement of the Park Lane Jewellery parties I hold are in stark contrast to the mine site I work on.” Rachelle Van Wyk
“Before I became a seller of Park Lane Jewellery I asked for some samples and was I blown away – the high quality, the attention to detail, the unique styles,” explains Rachelle. “I knew in an instant others would fall in love with this jewellery just as much as I had, and that is exactly what happens at every party.” The best way to purchase Park Lane Jewellery, or check out their range of rings, bangles, necklaces, earrings and more, is to host a party. Not only is it a great reason to get all your friends together, but there are also a number of discounted goodies for the host.
There are also other benefits for the host such as choosing four pieces of jewellery for half price. But Park Lane Jewellery doesn’t just look after the host; with a bonus purchasing plan for customers, and an unconditional lifetime replacement guarantee for every piece of jewellery sold, everyone can rest assured they will be well looked after. If you would like to host a party or join Rachelle’s team, please contact her via her Facebook page: Park Lane Jewellery with Rachelle – or call 0422 569 028.
“With our 5 Star Hostess Plan the host gets to choose a ‘thank you’ gift from 48 pieces of jewellery, with the most expensive piece being valued at $151, for just $17,” says Rachelle. “And the host also receives $20 spending money for each guest who places an order at your party – and if 10 or more orders are placed then they receive $40 for each order.”

RULES OF ENGAGEMENT ONE CLEVER WAY TO MAKE SURE YOUR GIRLFRIEND LOVES HER ENGAGEMENT RING IS TO FOLLOW TOM FRANKLING’S LEAD AND PRESENT YOUR BELOVED WITH DIAMONDS THAT YOU CAN DESIGN A RING FOR – TOGETHER. On the night Tom Frankling proposed to his girlfriend of two years, he had a plan to give him the best chance of success. After presenting Simone with a delicious home-cooked meal, he surprised her with a treasure hunt… with the prize being three exquisite diamonds and his heart, for keeps.
we wanted to keep and which we wanted to change,” Simone says. “It was an enjoyable process and we got exactly what we’d hoped for. We love it!” Simone’s bespoke engagement ring consists of a princess cut white diamond with two pink
“The treasure hunt ended with Tom proposing to me on one knee with the three loose stones. I said ‘Yes!’ even before I saw the diamonds,” Simone laughs. “Tom bought the stones from Kim Bartlett Master Jewellers so we could design the ring together.” Simone and Tom had an idea for the design in mind and took some photos of rings similar to what they were imagining to Jay Bartlett for his expert input. In next to no time, Jay had turned the vision into several CAD drawings for the couple to consider. “Tom and I were both excited to see what Jay came up with and each time we talked over the design to decide which elements

argyle diamonds on either side in a platinum setting on a yellow gold band. “I had butterflies in my stomach when Jay first opened the ring box,” Simone says. “I was overwhelmed with the finished product and didn’t actually want to touch it. Jay had to tell me that it was okay to take it out of the box and put it on! “Even Tom was a little speechless, which is not like him. I think we were both just so pleased with the final product and excited that this was the next step in our future together.”
Alice Gonano credits her passion for fine jewellery and gold to her Italian heritage. She’s always on the look-out for unusual designs she can modify to suit her style and often tears out pages of magazines that she then takes to Kim Bartlett Master Jewellers to turn into a reality. “The first item I took to Kim and Jay Bartlett was a bangle I wanted remodelled. I was so pleased with the new version that I started to think about reworking other items too,” Alice says. “I feel like Kim and his son Jay are as enthusiastic as I am about creating my new piece. They listen to me and what I’m
looking for. Their attention to detail, and endeavours to get it just right, is comforting to someone like me who is particular and has something specific in mind.” Alice’s latest piece is a statement ring that receives a lot of admiring ‘Ohhhs’ and ‘Ahhhs’. “Not a day passes without a friend or stranger admiring my jewellery,” Alice says. “When I look at it, I see the incredible amount of effort and precision that has made it so exquisite. No design I’ve wanted has ever been too much trouble or too big a challenge for the Bartlett boys.”

Drosia Parliaros Tell us a little about yourself? I am a fit and health conscious mum of two cute little girls. (Mostly cute, sometimes cheeky). I enjoy dining out, (where I can indulge in a glass of wine and relax with some yummy food), the Strand and keeping fit. After school drop off and a cup of really good coffee, I like to walk Townsville’s iconic Castle Hill and hit the shops. I have recently begun an exciting new Image and Fashion business called ‘Style My Wardrobe’ which is keeping me busy. I am also working part time with RFT Models teaching modelling and deportment. Describe your style: Feminine, classic with my own unique twist. When styling myself I tend to choose block colours and prefer to dress up. If I choose a pattern it is usually for during the day. I wear a lot of white as I find it is a fresh and softer alternative to black. Most treasured item: Of course my family. But fashionably speaking, when my husband and I went to Italy we walked past a gorgeous little jewellery store and a beautiful white gold butterfly ring captured my heart. I felt like pretty woman; I picked it, he bought it! It’s extremely meaningful to me. Labels you like: Kookai, Collette by Collette Dinnigan, Witchery, Mimco, Country Road, and Seafolly. I enjoy working out so you will often see me wearing Nike, Lorna Jane or Running Bare. Best shopping trip: When recently in Melbourne and being able to look at all my favourite labels under the one roof. That was a fantastic day! It just went too quickly. Your style guru: Charlize Theron is classy and makes an impact. You’d never be caught wearing: High waisted tight jeans/pants. (Though they are very fashionable). Wardrobe item you can’t bring yourself to part with and why? A green Zimmermann dress I bought pre-babies. I just love the colour and style. It’s a classic and I still get compliments when I wear it now. Shoes or dress first: I love purchasing a dress first. A classic dress is ladylike and can be dressed up or dressed down with simply changing accessories and shoes. My wardrobe is full of dresses. They are my absolute favourite. Meaningful last words: Find strength and be confident in yourself and what you believe in. Learn to wear what you love and feel good in, and remember being physically attractive is not limited to your age or shape. Have fun and live in the moment.

HEARING BETTER IN NOISY RESTAURANTS
You may be surprised to learn that there are some simple strategies you can use to aid your hearing in noisy surrounds. Even with completely normal hearing, let alone any sort of untreated hearing loss, auditory processing deficit or older hearing aids, it’s difficult to maintain a conversation in noisy environments such as restaurants, cafes, food courts and bars. However there are some strategies you can use, with and without hearing aids, to aid your communication in these environments.
“If you sit in a corner, or with your back to a wall, then there is no competing noise behind you.”
If you don’t have any hearing aids, or you have older more primitive hearing aids, then positioning in noisy restaurants is crucial. Many people sit in the middle of the noise and are unable to hold a conversation due to the competing noises all around them. If you sit in a corner, or with your back to a wall, then there is no competing noise behind you. Instead, the noise is all in front of you and you can pick out the people talking at your table above most of the other restaurant noise as they are closer.
Another feature in hearing aids that can dramatically improve hearing in noisy environments are Bluetooth or FM microphones. Some come in a lapel mic form and others in a larger microphone format, such as disguised in a pen or a notepad. For example, if it’s extremely noisy and you can’t hear anything then you can get whoever you’re speaking with to place the lapel microphone on their collar and it will pick up only their voice (no other background noise) and stream it via Bluetooth or FM direct to the hearing aids. There could be 300 hundred people all yelling at each other and you would only hear mostly the voice of the person you’re talking to. If you want to hear more than one person, you can use the pen or Notepad’s FM systems and place them down the other end of the table and they will pick up only the direction they are facing and send it back to the hearing aids.
If you have a more recent hearing aid that has a directional microphone and is able to reduce noises behind you then you would do the opposite. By facing the wall you are minimising the unwanted noise source in front of you and your hearing aids will reduce the level of noise behind you, allowing for much easier conversation.
Good lighting is also very important. We all rely on an element of lip reading to help us out when unwanted background noises are actually louder than the people we want to hear. Having good lighting on people’s faces aids this strategy. Also, when someone talks to you from the side, don’t push one ear towards them in an attempt to help hear
them better. Turn your head to look at them instead to supplement your hearing with the visual lip-reading cues and to maximise their voices to both ears. Two ears are always better than one. This is particularly pertinent for those with directional hearing aids as the hearing aids are only focusing on the sounds in front not the side. Lastly get someone’s attention before you start talking to them so they are looking at you from the start of the conversation and you can utilise the visual cues. If they, or you, are looking elsewhere at the beginning of the conversation there is a pretty good chance that, by the time you do see their face, the context of the conversation will be lost.

PREVENTING ‘NATURE DEFICIT DISORDER’ Whether it’s riding scooter at the Strand, scaling Castle hill or simply jumping rope in the backyard, getting your kids outside and active has more benefits than you might think! If you ask any outdoor sport enthusiast, I’m sure they will tell you that they love their sport due to more than just its physical effects. Being outside just feels GOOD! Richard Louv in his book; Last Child in the Woods: Save our Kids from Nature Deficit Disorder hypothesised that the ever decreasing amount of time children are spending outdoors in natural surrounds may be contributing to the rise in medical conditions such as childhood obesity, depression and behavioural problems. The Australian Government Department of Health recommends that children get at least a total 60 minutes of physical activity per day, but suspect that 9 out of 10 children do not reach this target. The benefits of physical activity for children are huge. On top of the benefits of exercise most people already know about, including improved coordination, muscle and bone strength, increased physical fitness, healthy weight maintenance and protection from chronic lifestyle-related disease, children who exercise regularly have higher self-esteem, more confidence and better concentration. They also exhibit less anti-social behaviour and tend to suffer less from stress and anxiety. Studies that compare the benefits of indoor exercise versus outdoor exercise in adults found that exercising outdoors in a natural environment is associated with greater self-reported feelings of increased energy, revitalisation and positive engagement together with decreased feelings of confusion, tension, anger and depression. The reactions that take place in the brain while exercising in water have been likened to those that take place during meditation and walking in a forest has been found to decrease heart rate and blood pressure when compared to walking in an urban environment. On top of this, outdoor exercise helps you obtain your daily dose of vitamin D.
“Contact with nature and physical activity are integral to the healthy development of our children and to our own mental and physical health.”
66 DUO MAGAZINE OCTOBER 2015 duomagazine.com.au
So how do we encourage our kids to get outside and play? Leading by example is a great way to encourage children. The Strand or Riverway pathways are perfect places for kids to ride scooters, bikes or roller-blades while you walk or jog alongside them. Let them decide how far and how fast they go and give them time to just have fun and be in the moment. Instead of driving to school or to a friends place, why not ride a bike or walk together. If you must drive, park a little further away and add in a short walk to your destination. At home, minimise their use of electronic media to no more than two hours per day and make the bedroom a technology free zone! Encourage outdoor activity by giving gifts like skipping ropes, bubbles, elastics, hula-hoops, balls, kites, trampolines or sporting equipment for birthdays instead of video games. Encourage your kids to experiment with sports that they express an interest in,
but remember that in order to make sport a positive experience, it has to be centred around fun. Contact with nature and physical activity are integral to the healthy development of our children and to our own mental and physical health. We are lucky living in Townsville that opportunities for outdoor exercise with our kids are all around us! You could try stand-up paddle boarding or kayaking at the Strand, mountain biking at Pallarenda, hit the hiking trails on Magnetic Island or just enjoy the view as you walk up Castle Hill together. LAURELYN HIGGINS | HYGIENIST | SMILE DENTAL
SWEET DREAMS!
If you have a baby on the way, everyone will have told you to sleep while you still can! But this month, Smile Dental’s Laurelyn Higgins offers some less well known tips to keep you smiling throughout your pregnancy.
Thinking of getting pregnant? It’s recommended that both you and your partner visit the dentist prior to conception to ensure good oral health. Not only does it mean a safer, healthier pregnancy, it safeguards the dental health of your newborn. Gum disease and tooth decay are the most prevalent infectious diseases in the mouth. The disease-causing bacteria can be passed from parent to child through saliva transmission. See your dental health professionals early for your own assessment, treatment and disease prevention advice.
Pregnancy and old wives’ tales Have you heard the tale that your teeth will become soft during pregnancy because the baby steals calcium from your teeth? Not true. The calcium is not lost from your teeth. It’s the calcium that you consume that affects the growth of your baby. But if enough calcium isn’t consumed then the baby will take calcium from the mother’s bones. It’s best to have a balanced diet with adequate calcium and take supplements if recommended by your doctor.
Metallic taste during pregnancy Ever suffered from a strange metallic or sour taste in your mouth early in pregnancy, even when you’re not eating? It’s just an unusual condition called dysgeusia and sometimes it affects your sense of smell as well. There are a variety of reasons our taste buds are affected including high hormonal levels, especially of oestrogen, and water retention in cells. Although dysgeusia is not well understood, it’s usually temporary so this too shall pass.
Tooth decay in expectant mums Can there be much of a cavity risk during pregnancy? You bet! Due to nausea and cravings, pregnant mums may graze through the day, often snacking on cavitycausing foods. Morning sickness and reflux cause acid erosion which weakens
“It’s recommended that both you and your partner visit the dentist prior to conception to ensure good oral health.”
the enamel of the teeth. And mums who gag when brushing or are constantly tired may just give the toothbrush a miss, resulting in high bacterial levels. See your dental hygienist regularly and ask for some personalised advice about diet, cleaning techniques and specialty products for home use.
Managing morning sickness There’s nothing more unpleasant and dangerous for the teeth than the stomach acid that accompanies morning sickness. But there’s an easy solution. Baking soda has been the jack of all trades over the years. Every family has a box of McKenzie’s Bi-Carb Soda which is alkaline. It’s a quick way to buffer an acidic mouth and prevent enamel loss, sensitivity and yellow teeth. Put a teaspoon of Bi-Carb in a 250ml water bottle and use after vomiting episodes.
Swish the solution around for one minute then spit. Delay brushing for one hour. It’s a great way to take care of stomach acid attack in the mouth.
Bleeding gums during pregnancy Gums that bleed during pregnancy happens quite frequently. The gums are more sensitive to bacterial inflammation due to fluctuating hormone levels. However healthy gums don’t bleed and pregnancy gingivitis is largely preventable. A thorough professional scaling, some personalized oral hygiene advice and an excellent homecare routine will work wonders. Pregnancy gingivitis can be a threat but you can control it with the right care. For more tips and tricks visit smiledental.com.au or facebook.com/smiletownsville

RUNNING INJURIES
When conventional Physio is not enough.
We live in a world now where technology is changing so rapidly that we expect instant results from our Internet, our meals, coffee, answers to questions, pain and also our body’s ability to recover. Unfortunately our bodies just don’t bounce back like that. It takes time and some very hard work sometimes to make a full recovery, just being pain free won’t cut it long term. Recently a distance runner presented to the clinic with right Achilles pain. He had seen a number of different professionals including physio’s, massage therapists and a podiatrist. He was given the normal advice of decreasing training load, eccentric exercises and was prescribed orthotics. He followed these religiously and gained full strength and was pain free. He returned back to training and on increasing the duration (on the fifth session), his pain returned. The patient was very frustrated. He had gone through an extensive rehabilitation program which had cost him time and money. The question was where do we go from here? The next step was looking at his running style on the treadmill. By placing wearable sensors on the lower limb, we can effectively measure the gait cycle, contact time,
“By placing wearable sensors on the lower limb, we can effectively measure the gait cycle, contact time, vertical loading rate, ground reaction force and symmetry pattern.”
vertical loading rate, ground reaction force and symmetry pattern. The results were very interesting. He placed 9% more load on the non affected leg and a 25% greater contact time on the injured leg. Basically, although the pain had settled on his Achilles, he returned to training too early as he still had compensating techniques during the gait cycle. A more rigorous treatment program including eccentric loading of the Achilles tendon and a graduated lower limb strengthening program aimed to improve tendon conditioning and ankle stiffness throughout contact with the ground during the running gait cycle. The patient progressed well with this rehabilitation and was pain free again after 3 weeks.
He was passed fit to return to training and on a graduated return to running. This new technology was used as biofeedback during running. Every time he loaded greater than 5% the alarm would sound, prompting him to correct his imbalance and allowing him to build up training load with little risk of re-injury. This biofeedback can be used on other areas like the lumbar spine to record different movements. It can also be used to capture the postures you adopt at work (do you stand or bend incorrectly), or have we sent an injured worker back to work too early (as with the runner). It helps take the guess work out of return to work/sport.
We reassessed again using the same new technology, which now showed a 5% extra load on the other leg and 15% longer contact time on the injured leg. For this reason he was not fit to return to training and could have gone down the same pathway and become more frustrated. Three weeks later he had a difference of 2% in compensating loading and ground contact time was symmetrical.

RECREATIONAL RUNNERS RISK INJURY WITH FUN RUNS SPORTS PODIATRIST KARL LOCKETT’S TOP 5 TIPS TO AVOID INJURY THIS RUNNING SEASON:
The benefits of running on health are numerous, but the downside is that jumping in without proper precautions can cause foot and leg pain. Many people don’t recognise that this pain left untreated can result in long lasting injury, and become counter to maintaining their active lifestyle.
1. VISIT YOUR PODIATRIST. Your podiatrist can provide you with a full assessment of your feet prior to commencing your training, preventing damage before it’s done. A good podiatrist will use cameras to video patients’ feet and assess how you walk on a treadmill, take foot measurements and look at joints and muscle range to accurately diagnose any existing or potential foot issues, taking into account your lifestyle and exercise regime. 2. KNOW YOUR FEET BEFORE YOU BUY YOUR RUNNERS. Once you’ve visited the podiatrist, you will know about your individual foot structure, such as how flat your feet are, and pronation (how much you roll inwards). Your foot type will determine the type of running shoes you need, and in particular how much support and control you need in certain areas. If necessary, use shoe inserts fitted by your podiatrist to support your arches.
3. ALWAYS WARM UP AND COOL DOWN. Most people realise that you need to warm up and cool down your muscles to avoid injury, but sometimes we become complacent. Make sure your stretches are slow and sustained. Stretch and then stretch some more after a run – especially if your workout involves hills. Inclines will strain your calf muscles and so stretching becomes even more important, as these muscles can take a while to repair.
70 DUO MAGAZINE OCTOBER 2015 duomagazine.com.au
4. START LOW AND GO SLOW. Allow your body to adjust to using certain muscles more when you start training for something like a fun run or marathon event. Going too hard too fast in typical weekend warrior fashion may end up in being out of action for the next week or so – undoing your enthusiasm. 5. REST, REPAIR – AND EAT BLUEBERRIES. Between training days, remember to keep stretching tight muscles while you rest. Replenish tired muscles with plenty of fluids and be sure to eat nutrient-rich foods. Include blueberries into your diet – they have nutrients which have been found to reduce delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS). With proper preparation, participants can keep the ‘fun’ in ‘fun run’ this season, and enjoy all the health benefits of being active and running without injury.

INTRODUCING BRUNO FORCELLA’S ELECTRIC CHOPPER FOR SINE CYCLES I always wanted to build a custom bike different from anything else. There had to be something about the bike that would differentiate it from all other custom-builts. Some bikes impress with big fat rear wheels, others convince with huge wheel diameters and small rims. All styles are powered by a combustion engine, most likely a V-Twin. Therefore, I decided to create a bike with an exceptional drivetrain. There are already electric motorcycles on the market, mainly scooters or motorcycles that look very similar to conventional ones. At first glance, you often don’t even recognise the bike is electric. However, there are also electric bikes that look so crazy you might think they come from space. An electric drivetrain comes with many benefits: The insane acceleration, almost no need for maintenance, direct torque, no oil, no gas, no exhaust, to name only a few. Nowadays the most important factor is the emission free means of transportation. I am an electrical engineer. I have already developed hard and software for electric motor control before. I decided to combine hobby and profession and build an Old School Chopper driven by a modern electric drivetrain. My goal was to build a custom bike just like many other bike builders do. The bike is one-of-a-kind. I have no idea how much time I spent designing and building it. Time doesn’t matter when you’re having fun doing something. This all happened at home in my garage, so the car had to stay outside for quite some time. The electric chopper is absolutely an eye catcher. I was invited to present my bike at several events and so far everybody was fascinated! Although the bike isn’t street legal yet, it doesn’t mean I can’t go for a ride! When riding around it is amazing how people look closely, because they recognize visually and acoustically right away that the chopper is electric and the future has arrived. IT IS ALL ABOUT THE TIMING
The North has a real chance to deliver local jobs well into the future, if we start planning now what our energy network needs to look like.
In the 2010 election campaign, one of the really bright ideas was the CopperString project. It was a project to take the National Energy Grid to Mt Isa which would allow a host of renewable energy projects to become established and feed into that same grid. If Mt Isa did not come in, it did not work. The short story is that it fell over and those projects were never realised. Townsville’s issue, indeed North Queensland’s issue, is how we can become an attractive destination for industry, to deliver local jobs. The answer is largely answered by offering competitively priced energy. Remember that the last large industrial plant in Townsville was Sun Metals, approved by Premier Wayne Goss in 1996. They did a deal on the electricity allowing this plant to operate competitively as if they were in the south east corner. That deal has expired and, even though they are the second largest user of electricity in the State, they are being belted by huge costs to pay for transmission and loss of load from Gladstone to Townsville. How can we possibly be a destination for any large industrial plant, and all the jobs which come with them, if they are charging $30million each and every year more than in Gladstone or the south east corner? The answer is we cannot even be considered. Recently, Townsville Enterprise convened an Energy Round Table to look at the energy needs and possibilities for Northern Queensland to make us the most attractive destination possible for industry and development. They proposed a mosaic of energy options. This would deliver the affordable base load energy to attract industry, jobs, and opportunity. Additionally, provide a way for our region to play a significant role in Australia’s emission reduction and renewable energy targets. What a massively attractive investment destination we would be if we had the Kennedy Wind Farm, Tully Mill Stream and Burdekin River hydro plants, big solar operations, and the bio energy from Ingham all forming part of our energy mix. We would play a significant role in not only assisting Australia meet its
“We can have a very bright energy and industrial future. It will take all three levels of Government to work together. But we have a chance to accelerate the result in our hands right now.”
30% emission reduction targets by 2030. We would become a hub for research into renewable energy technologies. Most, if not all, of these energy options have their investors ready. What we need is the poles and wires to connect them to a cohesive grid and be able to participate in the national energy market. This is where the Federal and State Governments come in. This will put us well and truly into the oversupply position, but we must put the cart before the horse to attract development and grow. This is what developing the North is all about: bringing the future forward. If Government provides the investment up front and we have favourable terms which will allow us to grow into the space we will deliver for all of Australia. It will be an energy Field of Dreams. If we build it, they will come. To deliver this, two things must happen. First, we have to be able to connect all these players to the National Grid. In 2010 we did not have a facility which could assist here. In 2015, we are genuinely moving on developing the north of our state. The $5 billion concessional loan facility, established under Treasurer Joe Hockey for projects which will deliver our future, is the obvious delivery agent. This sort of project is exactly what the fund was established for and the reason why the criteria have not been set in stone. We need to be creative and energetic and seize our future. It would put our region up in lights as a renewable energy, research, and industrial destination. Secondly, and most importantly, none of this will happen without a coal fired base load power station in the North. Coal must underpin this project to make it feasible. The obvious site is right beside a coal mine in the Northern Galilee, which will primarily export its coal but be able to run its operation with a power station instead of diesel generators. This competitive energy would then feed into our overall energy mix.
mix and 100% of the energy source for heavy industry. Some will say the rest of the world is moving to renewables. But consider this: there are over 1,000 coal fired power plants with high efficiency that are either planned or under construction in key Asian nations right now. These are not power stations per se as there could be more than one power plant per station. That will be around 700 times the amount of coal fired power Australia produces today – in coal. If we use the latest technology, we can save over 1.1 billion tonnes in Carbon emissions and we can drive the research right here in our region. We can help develop, improve, and deliver this technology. From 2010 to 2015 India, on its own, installed 315 coal fired units with a combined capacity to burn in the order of 260 million tonnes of coal a year. Currently under construction, with commissioning dates pre-end 2018, are a further 178 units, with a capacity to burn another 260 million tonnes per year. That is 520 million tonnes of coal per year by 2018. There are plans for another 500 plus units post 2018 as they move hundreds of millions of people out of poverty. We can play our part in ensuring they move to the best possible environmental result by making these units run as efficiently as possible thus saving billions of tonnes of carbon emissions per year. I have always said that nothing can happen in relation to developing the North without energy and water. I will now alter that to read affordable energy and water. We can have a very bright energy and industrial future. It will take all three levels of Government to work together. But we have a chance to accelerate the result in our hands right now. Presently, this is just an idea and a conversation. It can be so much more. We can be part of the world wide answer here in Townsville. We must seize our future and run with it.
Talk that coal is dead defies common sense. Coal represents 86% of Australia’s energy

Understanding Business Biology
Biologists say ecosystem to describe a community of organisms interacting in their environment. We can analogize that definition to business as well. Thus, in a business ecosystem, the relationships between things matter. In fact, they matter a lot. Everything touches everything else. And so the way that humans interact has a big effect on the system. I’m sure most people who work in offices appreciate just how much waste we all contribute to our environment. Whether it’s packaging of products that gets thrown out, piles and piles of paper stored in archive boxes or even the amount of old gear that sits idle in the back room, the list is endless. The western world thrives on a material, wasteful and inefficient culture. “Back in the day” you could walk into your bank, talk to your manager about your plans and walk out with a mortgage – same day. Now you have to provide a mountain of information, fill in multiple forms, wait a week and then sign another mountain of paperwork before you are finished. Weren’t computers supposed to make our life easier? Wouldn’t they help save the rainforests being cut down?
“Change is inevitable. It will take getting used too, but once you are (paper) free of your old habits, your business (and the environment) will be very thankful.”
Finally, it seems we are making some headway. Queue dream sequence music: Welcome to the paperless future…

TO BALI AND BEYOND
WHY THERE’S MORE TO BALI THAN MASSAGES AND CHEAP COCKTAILS
Just before midnight on 2 September 180 passengers dressed in their summer best passed through a revamped international terminal and boarded a Jetstar Boeing 787 bound for Bali – the Island of the Gods – full of endless beaches, countless wave breaks, unique shopping and hours of relaxing by the pool. After months of advertising promising sun, surf, and serenity, passengers on the first international flight departing Townsville with a major carrier in over ten years, were greeted with just that. Photos from holiday makers appeared across social media within hours, showing North Queenslanders soaking up the Balinese sun, culture and cuisine. Over 10,000 seats have been booked on flights between Townsville and Bali over the coming months as more and more locals take up the cheap fares for an even cheaper island getaway. But there’s much more to Bali than massages and cheap cocktails. Townsville Enterprise Chief Executive Officer Patricia O’Callaghan said services to Bali were the first in a number of international destinations being targeted in line with the Federal Government’s Northern Australia agenda. “The Northern Australia agenda challenges the region
to ‘think bigger’ and acknowledge the opportunities through Asia which sit right on our doorstep. “There is already a huge demand from the Asian markets for high quality beef and with over 60% of the world’s middle class expected to be living in the Tropics Zone by 2050, the demand for our goods and services will reach an unprecedented scale. These opportunities will not only be for agriculture but also for resources, tropical research, business and tourism. “In order to capitalise on these opportunities, the region had to unite to advocate to the Federal Government why it was so important for the Townsville Airport to regain its international status. “The Townsville Airport is a strategic gateway into Australia and the current and future global shifts in Asia and across the world will drive changes in import and export opportunities for Townsville North Queensland. “To have the Prime Minister, the Deputy Prime Minister and the Minister for Foreign Affairs in Townsville joining the Federal Member for Herbert Ewen Jones MP to publically announce Townsville Airport open for international business shows how important Townsville is strategically to the future of this Nation.”
80 DUO MAGAZINE OCTOBER 2015 duomagazine.com.au
“Whilst Bali is first off the rank, it is just the beginning and we aspire to see new routes such as Auckland, Singapore and Papua New Guinea as real possibilities in the future.” Bali’s airport in Denpasar (Ngurah Rai) is serviced by a number of major airlines including Jetstar, Garuda Airlines, Emirates, Qatar Airways, China Southern, AirAsia X Indonesia, Malaysia Airlines, Thai Airways and Hong Kong Airlines. Townsville Airport Chief Operating Officer, Kevin Gill, said Townsville was the latest of a rapidly growing number of destinations offered through Denpasar as the Indonesian Government aims to cement Denpasar as one of the world’s largest transport hubs. “Bali is much more than a popular tourism destination, it’s a gateway to the rest of the world. “The Denpasar Airport has undergone a significant redevelopment over the past couple of years offering visitors more than 250 flights per week across the world. It is increasingly seen as a major international hub and the intense competition means that flights to Singapore, for example, are often less than $100 per person and departing frequently throughout the day. “What this means for Townsville is that these direct
BUSINESS+DEVELOPMENT
flights to Bali not only gives Townsville a competitive advantage over other regional cities in Queensland by providing an attractive lifestyle benefit, but they open the doors for the 4 million tourists who visit Bali each year to come and explore the Townsville North Queensland region.” The journey to Jetstar’s maiden voyage began many years ago and endured plenty of turbulence before last month’s take off. Huge costs associated with providing Border Services were deterring airlines from establishing services to Townsville. For many months Member for Herbert, Ewen Jones MP, Townsville Airport, Townsville City Council, the surrounding Regional Councils of Hinchinbrook, the Burdekin, Palm Island and Charters Towers, the Townsville Chamber of Commerce and Townsville Enterprise lobbied the Federal Government to provide Border Services and the reinstatement of Townsville Airport’s international status. In early 2015 the Federal Government announced it would fund the $13M required to provide Border Services and Townsville Airport’s international status was reinstated. Federal Member for Herbert Ewen Jones said the relaunch of international flights was an important step in Townsville becoming an international city. “This first international service is just the start of growing our region’s tourism and trade links with the Asian market. “If Townsville is to become the natural hub for Northern Australia, we must become an international city. I am proud to have played a role so far, but now the hard work starts. We must continue to grow and bring people here for work and play from around the world.” “We are a Government which is serious about developing the North of Australia, with a White Paper to map out the ‘where to next’ for our city and the region. Opening Townsville Airport to international flights helps to deliver on our commitment to developing the North.” Townsville Enterprise recently signed a $30K partnership with Jetstar to provide city and business leaders the opportunity to conduct tourism and trade delegations across Jetstar’s existing routes. Ms O’Callaghan said the partnership opens further opportunities to grow the region’s visitor market. “Townsville North Queensland has an ambitious goal of doubling visitor expenditure to $1.04B by 2020. In order to achieve this we need to focus on not just developing our local products and experience, but ensuring access to the destination is convenient and sustainable. “The Jetstar partnership will allow business and tourism leaders to conduct trade and tourism delegations across the Jetstar Group’s vast network of 70 destinations across 19 countries and territories, to build business cases for new routes.”
“THE TOWNSVILLE AIRPORT IS A STRATEGIC GATEWAY INTO AUSTRALIA AND THE CURRENT AND FUTURE GLOBAL SHIFTS IN ASIA AND ACROSS THE WORLD WILL DRIVE CHANGES IN IMPORT AND EXPORT OPPORTUNITIES FOR TOWNSVILLE AND NORTH QUEENSLAND.”
Jetstar Chief Executive Officer David Hall said the airline was keen to support city leaders in establishing additional routes. “I was really impressed with Townsville Enterprise’s passion for the region and ambitious growth agenda during my visit earlier this year. Our $30K travel grant will help Townsville’s leaders build the city’s profile in the key international markets we fly to across Asia Pacific and identify new opportunities for growth. “While our immediate focus is about ensuring our Bali services are sustainable year-round, we also want to support Townsville’s domestic and international growth ambitions over the longer term.” While all systems are go and thousands of passengers are taking advantage of the cheap fares to Bali, the aviation industry is watching this route to ensure its success before establishing additional routes. Ms O’Callaghan said an Aviation Attraction Committee has been established and is working with the Townsville Airport to attract additional routes. “Talks with international carriers are ongoing. Our aspiration to open the city to a number of international destinations is ambitious and we have an aggressive advocacy strategy continuing to ensure our potential to become a gateway to Australia is realised.”

PHILIP JENKINS | GENERAL MANAGER | BENCHMARK BUSINESS SOLUTIONS
EMPLOYEES ARE AN ASSET – NOT AN EXPENSE Engaging your human resources
In your business, what is the largest expense? Inventory? Rent and utilities? Or, would you say your payroll and employees? Far too often, employees are viewed as an inevitable expense rather than the asset they should and could be within your business. For many businesses, the expense of their employees is a significant proportion of business costs. So, are you getting the very best return on your investment? Although it can be difficult to measure, staff turnover and late attendance, no arrivals or illnesses, all effect daily operations of the business and significantly reduce your employee’s moral and engagement. What business owners and managers want are employees that choose the right job and go into work because they want to; and therefore you can then get the very best out of them while they are there. So how do I get this ideal employee? By engaging with them, communicating and having the right channels in place to support and nurture them.
“For many businesses, the expense of their employees is a significant proportion of business costs. So, are you getting the very best return on your investment?”
What are your employees saying about you, as an employer, to their families, to their friends
and neighbours? On social media? Your employees are often the unofficial mouthpiece of your business and it only takes one disengaged employees casual remarks on social media to put your business name in disrepute. Engaging with your staff is speaking to and involving them, committing to their hearts and minds. Having the appropriate communication and development channels in place to ensure that your employee continues to be the right fit for your business and their role within it. So are you engaging your human business resource effectively? Too often the annual performance review is the only time managers and employees sit down to discuss any issues or plan development goals. It has to be acknowledged that an annual performance review has only partially worked in the past, and it was hardly appreciated by the manager or the employee being reviewed. We, as employers, need to manage this role and relationship by continually having conversations and not just once a year. It’s through these regular ‘touch base’ conversations that performance
goals, KPIs, and other business activities can be discussed, refined and monitored. Frequently, businesses will recruit employees on the basis of qualifications and experiences. Whilst these are obviously important and used as tools for evaluations, the person’s attitude and fit for your organisation is paramount. There are a lot of clichés surrounding attitudes and positivity in the workplace, but with sales activity comes results. There is a genuine need to focus on employees and flexibility within the organisation and to work with them, in order to achieve organisational goals and increased personal development. Employers cannot afford to miss out on making the most out of their employee resource. Ensure you have the right HR tools and systems in place to communicate and engage your employees regularly and you will find that you will get a positive return on your human investment.
DOES YOUR BUSINESS NEED A HAND? Now more than ever, every business needs a hand to find the right people. Then they need a hand to manage them to their best. Not only can Benchmark give you a guiding hand with that, they also provide HR systems, audits and plans as well as business mentoring and coaching. They can also provide solutions with Industrial Relations and Employment Law. As your local Human Resources experts, Benchmark can tailor a HR program to benefit your business. THINK AHEAD A BIT
Don’t wait for something to go wrong before you look at risk protection.
When anything upsets our family or business balance, we automatically go into protective mode. Call it instinct, but the typical reaction to any threat is for ‘fight or flight’ to kick in. The biggest threat from a financial perspective is the risk of losing what you have worked so hard for. To mitigate this risk, we have to protect our family members, employees and, of course, our clients/customers and not wait for a risk event to occur before we react. From a family perspective, as we get on in life and our businesses grow and hopefully succeed, and our children grow into mature adults, our aim is to provide a safe haven for them and ourselves. So we have health, life, Total and Permanent Disablement (TPD), trauma and income protection insurances. But whatever you have, you still need to plan ahead and devise a water-tight succession plan so that there is clarity for your spouse and offspring and, most of all, asset protection. Let’s say you came from humble beginnings and now have an enterprise. You personally own some significant assets, have five children (two to different partners) and are now on your

second marriage. What if your corporate structure was archaic, lacked basic harmony, your entities were owned directly by you, and your corporate structure was soaked with retained profits? To protect yourself, you’d need to consider (along with your team of qualified professionals) implementing a corporate restructure to establish separation between business operations and assets. Why? To reduce your exposure to risk and potentially create some tax efficiency. If you don’t, your spouse and children could stand to lose capital via higher taxes or missed tax savings. If you don’t, a family fallout could erupt. If you have children with half or step-siblings, even more reason to consider a plan to ensure fairness amongst all. You need to also protect your business. What happens if you, or a key employee, is unable to work for a long period, or at all? Do you have adequate insurance to cover you for this? You also need to ensure qualified and appropriately trained people are able to take over competently when you or your key staff retire or move on. Never take for granted that
your staff are 100 per cent happy. Value your employees and communicate with them to ensure job satisfaction. Don’t assume because they’re not complaining that everything is okay. Have a ‘vision’ for your business and link this to the ‘values’ of the business and your people and clearly define a viable timeframe. The key part to your succession plan would not succeed without customer satisfaction. There’s no point protecting something that you think has worth if the customers don’t agree. Never assume that your customers are 100 per cent satisfied. Protect and appreciate the value they provide your business by giving them an option to give you feedback. Take it on board as constructive criticism and do everything to mitigate the risk of them going elsewhere. If customers are moving on, it’s time for self-reflection. Ask yourself why and do what you can to mitigate the risk by working with and retaining what you have. We, as family members, business owners and employers have a lot to learn from our instincts by listening, trusting and protecting what is ours and not taking anything for granted.

WHERE IS ITHACA?
TO SPEAK OF HOME
TO SPEAK OF FAMILY IS TO THINK OF HOME. AND THROUGH HOME WE SPEAK OF OUR PLACE IN THE WORLD, AND OUR RESPONSIBILITIES TO IT AND TO OURSELVES. AND YET, IT ISN’T ALWAYS CLEAR WHAT BEING AT HOME MEANS. FINDING OUR WAY BACK HOME, OR TO A PLACE WE CAN CALL HOME, CAN DO WONDERS FOR THE VITALITY OF LIFE HERE AND NOW, AND TO THE RICHNESS AND RESILIENCE OF OUR COMMUNITIES IN THE FUTURE. BY WARWICK POWELL
Being at home seems in so many ways absolutely central to how we confront the turbidity of our present world. So how is it that we can get a grip on the present sense of dislocation? Of being a stranger in an unfamiliar world of flux? In Homer’s Odyssey, the hero – Odysseus – spends ten years at sea in search of his home Ithaca. And, when he does finally set foot on his kingdom, he is commanded to the deserts. Through Odysseus’ journey, we get to understand the relationship we have to what we call home by reference to our past, the present and the future. Only through prolonged absence, an enforced estrangement, did Odysseus come to finally understand what being at home meant. ALONENESS AND ANGST
When all that seemed familiar melts away, an understandable and often overwhelming sense of loss consumes us. We suddenly find ourselves alone, surrounded by the collapsing and evaporating ruins of everything we once took for granted. On the precipice of this void of meaninglessness, we are blanketed by dread and wonder: do we have the courage to accept this? What it is that we’re challenged to accept is the death of all that seemed solid and familiar. In the face of death, and in anticipation of it, we can begin to sense one’s connection with one’s own finitude.

Unsurprisingly, this realisation of and anticipation towards what one thinks can only be a nothingness – what else can it be, now that everything I took for granted is dissolving before my very eyes? – infuses us with a deep and displacing anxiety. We sense this not just as individuals, but also as communities. Those with the most invested in the world as-it-was and the world as-it-just-is-hangingby-a-thread, feel this angst the most. And yet, just as mortality is a fundamental part of being alive as human beings, so is the evaporation socially and economically of taken-for-granted institutions that marks our existence on earth. AN OPENING
Standing at the precipice, we are actually thrown back. We recoil from the inevitability of death and strike back with a need to reshape meaningful lived existence in our world. There, on the very edge, we are the furthest we possibly can be from home. Yet, in our experience of estrangement, we are able to glimpse what home is. Indeed, just as it was for Odysseus, estrangement is a precondition for being at home. I often think of it as if we’re struggling our way through a thicket of rough undergrowth, with only a “sense” of where we are trying to head, we carry on. At times, we feel we’ve come a full circle; at other times, we’ve taken what looked like a path, but which in fact led nowhere other than to the precipice… and then, suddenly, we see an opening and we know that it calls us home. This opening is like an awakening. A NEW FRAME EMERGES
Awakenings like this are experienced as proverbial penny dropping moments. The world is seen with a new sense of clarity, as if a fog has been lifted. Things seem to fit into place, we understand how things work and why things happen. In effect, we have a new frame through which the world becomes visible and meaningful to us. Old certainties have evaporated. Here in North Queensland, the roaring noughties are but a distant memory. Remember those halcyon days when it was impossible to get a table at any of the reputable restaurants in town? Or of the wanton buzz that seemed to fill every space, no matter where and when you were? Credit fueled economic activity was all the rage. Property prices skyrocketed, everyone was on the merry-go-round. The equities market was so alluring, thousands didn’t hesitate to mortgage their futures to get a piece of the action. Caveat emptor was the tag line, as all and sundry took out margin loans to buy shares. Developers from near and far cashed in, and the historically high
wages of mine industry workers that spearheaded conspicuous consumption seemed like the new normal, rather than an aberration. Supermarkets popped up everywhere, and the two major retailers increased their market share from less than 35% in the mid-1970s to over 85% today. The CBD’s been on life support ever since, while those that developed the air-conditioned suburban boxes we seem so attracted to, have been laughing all the way to you know where. As it all crashed in the wake of the GFC, and the labour market shrank by thousands, many sought to cling on. Public institutions found little room to move. Many others continue to hope that the halcyon days are just a coal mine or a footy stadium away. A withering CBD was pumped with more life support, to little avail. Build it and they will come was the catch cry when credit-fueled consumption was all the rage. Alas, after the crumbling of Lehmann Brothers, and the implosion of Storm Financial, we know that the life support of old aren’t really doing the trick.
connected – connected to the communities in which we live, to the people that work the land and the waters to produce the foods we consume, and to the creative people in our midst who dream up new ways of making local produce sing. A renewed stance towards food in our lives also refreshes our sense of homeliness in our region, whereby we are literally connected to the sinews of life and the rhythms of our world. The world in which we live isn’t there simply for us to boss around. Communities of people are doubtless an intrinsic part of the natural landscape, and gaining a sense of being at home happens when our estrangement to our ecosystem – our entire world – can be recognized and confronted. Food is just one such dimension of this ecosystem, but a vitally intrinsic one, so it would seem. As I talk to people across regional Queensland, the palpable sense of estrangement cannot be ignored. But through this estrangement it is possible that, like Odysseus, we start to glimpse what being at home – as an eco-family – really means.
The rhythms and dynamics of the old normal seem to have run their course. Confronting the finitude of the old normal is an act of estrangement that can help bring us nearer to home. FINDING HOME THROUGH LOCAL FOOD
It’s amazing how something so fundamental to our mortal existence is also the pathway to a real sense of being at home. How often do we complain about tomatoes that don’t taste like tomatoes, or reminisce a simpler time when the foods we consumed were seasonal and local? When the potatoes of the Tablelands drive past our doors to distribution centres in the south, before returning a week later, we know something is out of sorts. When some of the best tasting tomatoes grown in the Burdekin don’t get to our supermarket shelves because they look odd and don’t transport well, we know we aren’t at home. North Queensland consumes over $270m on fruit and vegetables, and $257m on meat (of which an estimated $113m+ is on beef) each year, and yet, we’ve a beef industry in crisis on our doorsteps, and horticulturists getting squeezed. No wonder people are feeling ill at ease. This isn’t what we know to be our home. Prevailing industry structures are now like strangers; they don’t make us feel at home, no matter the marketing and PR. Through the prism of what we produce and what we eat, we can rekindle a new sense of home. It is an experience of home in which we are more

OUR HOME IS OUR CASTLE SPEAKING THROUGH TOUCH
BY PETER BAINES OAM (WWW.PETERBAINES.COM.AU)
I could see them looking around for the rest of the house, where were the doors leading to the bedrooms and why was the toilet in the lounge room? The room that we stood in was the house. There were no doorways leading to other rooms because there were no other rooms. The house that had served this family for the past forty years was smaller than a single room of the homes we had left in Australia for all of those of us who now stood in this house. Not that the twenty of us could fit at the one time, we took turns. We had walked through the narrow passageways of the slums of Khlong Toei to get to this house, but no one appreciated what lay on the other side of the doorways. Perhaps we weren’t looking into their homes out of respect, perhaps we were looking down unsure where to place each footstep. Mr Bai was a 79 year old Thai man with silver hair and a toned body that portrayed that of a hard life of physical labour. He moved without the stoop of a man of his age which you might expect and his smile was customary of Thais. It was welcoming and one of deep appreciation for what lay ahead. Twenty kind souls had travelled from Australia and New Zealand to be part of a Social Venture
Program that would give them insights into resilience, compassion, influence and leadership, the likes of which they wouldn’t experience anywhere quite like what lay ahead for them. Walking out of their four star hotel in the business district of Sukhumvit in Bangkok, they were aware the day was going to be different, their hearts and minds were open to receive what lay ahead – that’s why they had travelled to Thailand to be part of the program. Now standing in the house on the creaky floorboards they were starting to absorb the absolute simplicity and nakedness of this house. But the rawness of the house was easy to miss when you first walked in to meet Mr Bai and his family. Laying on a mattress towards the back of the room was Mr Bai’s 64 year old wife. She didn’t get up to greet the guests who were now in her home, she didn’t bring her hands together in the customary Thai way to show respect or common manners, she remained on her mattress. Mrs Bai had suffered a stroke many years ago and was left permanently paralysed. She was incapable of feeding herself, she was incapable of caring for herself and was certainly incapable of welcoming guests into her home. Mrs Bai’s existence was only possible through the
86 DUO MAGAZINE OCTOBER 2015 duomagazine.com.au
love and devotion of her husband of fifty years and their 45 year old son who with a physical disability worked to support the family earning whatever he could, whenever he could. The Bai family represent many of the one hundred thousand who live within the slums of Khong Toei, a short taxi ride from the restaurants and bars of Bangkok. But the Bai’s do it harder than most, even of those living in the slums. Nobody cares too much for the elderly and the disabled, even in this culture who rely upon the extended family, it seems they are the silent ones left behind. I bent down to hold Mrs Bai’s hand, it seemed there was little else we could do. She couldn’t speak and she had no control over her arms or legs. I held her soft hand in mine and stroked her hand. More of her surrounds started to come into my field of awareness. I knelt beside her and became aware that under the floorboards was water. I could see that on the walls inside this room was evidence of water flooding this house. I would learn that in times of heavy monsoonal rain, the water levels of the slums would rise and flood many of the houses, including that of Mr and Mrs Bai. There was much about this family that we could never change. We couldn’t bring physical movement back into Mrs. Bai, we couldn’t correct
BUSINESS+DEVELOPMENT
the physical disability of her son but we could change their living conditions, that was within our abilities. We gathered around the corners of the mattress and with great care and dignity Mrs Bai was raised from the floor by the six Australians, six more than had ever been in her house before and she was carried out of the home that had been her entire world for many of the last forty years. Out into the narrow streets of the slums she was carried and into her new temporary home. Already her living conditions had been improved ten fold. Her mattress was laid on the ground and the fan was adjusted to give her relief from the heat. I wondered what she must have been thinking. Did she comprehend what we were doing and why? Was she pleased to be out of the house or was there a touch of sadness in leaving what had been her home for the past forty years? Then the removal of everything Mr and Mrs Bai owned commenced. The Australian’s formed a line passing from one to the other the possessions of this family until there was nothing left but the shell of the house. It took two hours and that seemed a bit too quick that you could empty a house of its possessions after forty years, and totally demolish the house down to the foundations that sat in the mud and water that lay beneath the floorboards. But within two hours the house that was a home for Mr and Mrs Bai, no longer existed.
“WE CAN’T HELP EVERYONE, BUT WE CAN ALL HELP SOMEONE”
The visitors from Australia and New Zealand who were part of this Social Venture Program stood dirty, dripping in perspiration but pleased with their efforts. The smile on Mr Bai’s face told of his feelings. I guess that for many of the last forty years he had resolved himself to the life he was living and the conditions in which his family endured. He was content, of that I don’t doubt. But leaving a vacant lot where his house once stood he knew of what was to come. Forty three days later he and his family would move into a new home that was to be built by local trades people from the slums right where his former house stood. Funded by those who had pulled down his house that morning it would provide a level of comfort for him and his family. He would be able to provide his wife a level of comfort and dignity which previously he could not. No longer would the family fear the rains, knowing their home would flood. The new home for Mr and Mrs Bai will be a modest one by our measures, but it will be their castle and for a family who had no means of bringing about such change, fewer prouder new home owners there will be. And this was only day one of the five day social venture program. More information about future Social Venture Programs can be obtained by contacting peter@peterbaines.com.au We can’t help everyone, but we can all help someone.

FRESH THE NEW WILLOWS UNDER CONSTRUCTION
Over the past couple of months you would have noticed the full closure of the car park and entrance between Willows and Genesis. Due to this closure, a hoarding has been erected between the JB Hi-Fi public toilets and the wall located at the end of the travelator. Prices Plus has relocated opposite The Coffee Club and is now open for trade. This is the only impact to the centre you will experience over the coming months, with all works occurring outside of the centre in the fenced off area. We encourage all customers to utilise the upper deck car park which can be accessed via the ramp beside the development area. There is an abundance of shaded car parks with easy access to the centre via the escalator or elevator and this is best parking for both JB Hi-Fi and Big W. We would also like to remind you that all four major stores - Big W, Woolworths, Coles and Target are open for trade as per normal. We are excited to of welcomed Townsville’s only Off Ya Tree (opposite Shaver Shop) and Defence Bank (opposite Australia Post) to the centre over the past couple of months. You may have also noticed that Flight Centre has relocated to beside Wallace Bishop in a brand new site, as has Escape Travel who are now located beside Stacey and Stacey (both retailers remain in the same mall). ONE OF THE EARLIER FIRMS TO MOVE OUT OF THE CITY CENTRE, MCDONALD LEONG LAWYERS MERGED ITS TWO LOCATIONS (FLINDERS MALL AND DEERAGUN) INTO ONE PRACTICE ON THURINGOWA DRIVE IN 1998. MCDONALD LEONG LAWYERS is in its 22nd year of practice with long-time partner, Linda Leong, now sole principal following Mark McDonald’s retirement in May. As a firm that focuses on servicing mums and dads and people in business it made sense for McDonald Leong Lawyers to base themselves on Thuringowa Drive. “We saw the growth of families and business in the Thuringowa area and decided we had to move with that growth,” Linda says. “By basing ourselves on Thuringowa Drive, we are still accessible to our clients in the Northern Beaches and, with parking in front of our building, clients don’t have to struggle to find a park.” Since moving to Thuringowa Drive, McDonald Leong Lawyers has grown with Townsville’s population. The firm has expanded from a two-solicitor firm to a firm now employing six solicitors, a trainee solicitor and eight administration staff that are involved in up to 500 matters at any one time. McDonald Leong Lawyers has four main areas of practice: Litigation, Family Law, Conveyancing and Wills and Estates, with each area headed by experienced solicitors.
“We saw the growth of families and business in the Thuringowa area and decided we had to move with that growth.” Linda Leong
“Everyone in the firm is considered a key player and puts in 100 per cent. Our office is like one large family who works together to get the best result for every client,” Linda says. At McDonald Leong Lawyers, practitioners have the freedom to devote whatever time is needed to individual files without question. Clients are not treated as a number and the firm appreciates that each client’s issue is unique. Members of the firm play an active role in many community events and the firm sponsors a number of local junior sporting teams, charity events such as the recent Relay for Life, and community events such as the Townsville Eisteddfod. With a long-term commitment to Townsville, McDonald Leong Lawyers is here to stay, as is Linda Leong, who has no intention of retiring anytime soon.

STRATA SUCCESS
NORTHERN BODY CORPORATE MANAGEMENT CELEBRATES 10 YEARS. TAKE YOUR BODY CORPORATE TO THE NEXT LEVEL…. THIS YEAR Northern Body Corporate Management celebrated 10 years in the Strata Industry and has firmly embedded itself as an industry leader in body corporate management in the North Queensland landscape. Committee members and contractors joined NBCM at the Townsville Port for drinks and live music to help commemorate such an important milestone. After previously working in the industry for both small and large body corporate organisations Seimon Griffiths, Principal of NBCM, could see how incorporating the best qualities from both would be the leading components to creating a body corporate company that Townsville needed. A company that had the efficiency and knowledge of a larger firm yet the personal hands on approach that only a small to medium business could provide. This concept shaped the principals on which Northern Body Corporate Management was founded. In a space of ten years we have grown to a staff of eight, with our office located on Thuringowa Drive with plenty of customer parking available. The majority of our core business is local to Townsville; however, we have grown to manage complexes up the coast to Cairns, out west to Mt Isa, south to Mackay and recently Brisbane. Our aim is to meet specific needs of all our clients as we understand that everyone is different and all opinions matter. Open communication is the key. Seimon and Jason Griffiths, Directors of Northern Body Corporate Management, are thrilled to have reached the ten year milestone and would like to take this opportunity to thank their staff and clients for their continued support and look forward to another ten years in the making.

Volvo Commercial Vehicles – Townsville opened its doors in late 1994, when the company moved on the opportunity to establish a wholly owned company base in North Queensland. VCV Townsville Branch Manager Ross Gordon joined the team in 1999, after working with the company in various roles for over a decade in Brisbane. He now calls Townsville home. “I love Townsville. It’s a lifestyle. It’s not a big city but, rather, a big country town and the people are genuine,” Ross says. “We started with one brand, Mack Trucks, and now have three strong brands — Mack, UD and Volvo Trucks. Since 1999 we’ve had two expansions of the workshop and a major $2 million upgrade to facilities.
NOW OFFERING THREE STRONG BRANDS IN MACK, UD AND VOLVO TRUCKS, VOLVO COMMERCIAL VEHICLES – TOWNSVILLE HAS INVESTED MORE THAN $2 MILLION IN EXPANDING ITS LOCAL BASE.
“We’ve allowed plenty of room for expansion as we see many opportunities ahead.” The VCV Townsville management team have all been with the company for over a decade, while the majority of staff have been on the team for more than five years. They believe in the products they sell and the after-sales team has competed in, and won, the Australian final for the worldwide Vista program that Volvo runs every two years. “Staff numbers have grown from around 10 in the early days through to 34 now,” Ross says. “Every customer is important to us, so we work hard to ensure maximum uptime. If the truck stops so do our customers’ businesses – we offer no road blocks, just solutions. VCV Townsville supports many local activities, such as junior sports and regional programs, and gets involved with charities like Hope for Hearts Kids. “Recently we joined with Mack Trucks Australia to put on a community event for the town of Ravenshoe after their recent tragic events,” Ross says. “Another major activity for us is our involvement in the Camp Quality Convoy for Kids. VCV Townsville and the Volvo Group are passionate about being a part of the community we live and work in.” With Townsville being a stepping stone to the reef and the outback, and now a gateway to the world with our new port facilities and international airport, VCV says the sky’s the limit for our town. “We have the potential to be a major force in many areas of the economic community and our business, with the innovative products Volvo Group offer, will be at the forefront as we grow,” Ross says. “Road freight logistics are changing rapidly and, with the continuous improvements that Volvo Group technologies put into our vehicles, we’re sure to be a part of this change.”

TOWNSVILLE PROUD | PROMOTION
We debuted the TOWNSVILLE PROUD campaign in our May issue, calling on local-andloving-it businesses and organisations to share their story in DUO Magazine and the response has been ongoing. From Medical Centres to earthmoving contractors, car dealerships, retailers and more, what ties the businesses in this feature together is their passion to give back to the community. Whether it be by donating to local charities, supporting Townsville sports teams, or literally building our town from the ground up, these companies have been hands-on in shaping our great city. If you’ve been part of making Townsville a community that cares, now’s the time to join the TOWNSVILLE PROUD family. Let people know what you stand for and your vision for our future. There’s still time to tell your tale in our next issue as we celebrate more quiet achievers dedicated to making a difference. As part of showing our neighbours and the rest of Australia that we’re proud to be from Townsville, each month we also turn the spotlight on our iconic suburbs. This month we spotlight Mundingburra residents, Jodie and Brian Bedford. We’re on a roll with celebrating our city now and we’re gathering pace. We want you to join the movement and spread the passion, so if you’re TOWNSVILLE PROUD too, join the campaign call us on 4771 2933 or email duo@duomagazine.com.au

A LIBRARY FOR THE END OF THE WORLD – LOCAL MEMORIES TAKE THE STAGE
IMAGINE THE WORLD WAS ENDING. THE HUMAN RACE SURVIVES, BUT EACH PERSON CAN ONLY TAKE ONE THING WITH THEM…A SINGLE MEMORY. AN EVER-EXPANDING LIBRARY stocked with personal memories will tour to regional Queensland later this year as part of New ERA, an initiative by Metro Arts.
Sarah Winter is a performance-maker, installation artist and designer whose practice focuses on memory and the audience experience in immersive installations and the creation of participatory environments.
A charming contemporary work created by Brisbane-based artist Sarah Winter, a library for the end of the world captivates participants with tours of secret locations and recorded memoirs from strangers and friends alike.
In this project participants will rediscover familiar places and well-worn streets as they journey to a captivating library full of old-world objects and a collection of rich memories from all who have passed through its doors. They can add their own memory to the ever growing library for the end of the world and listen to memories left by strangers from their town and beyond.
The experience guides participants by cassette player and headphones to an ethereal space where memories, recorded on audio tapes, can be plucked from shelves before a personal contribution is left behind for the next participant. “The library itself, once you find it, is an enchanting space. Its design hints at an outside-of-time otherworldliness — with the sensation that whoever works there may return at any moment.” Zenobia Frost, a storm of tea cups. The unique interactive work will be accompanied by a series of workshops with the creative team, culminating in a bespoke audio tour being created and left in each town.
A Library for the end of the world will tour regional Queensland throughout October and November and will arrive at Townsville’s iconic Riverway on 29 – 30 October. Session times are available from 9am – 11am and 4pm – 8pm both days, departing every 10 minutes. Tickets for this unique experience are just $15 and available from www.ticketshop.com.au or by phoning 4727 9797.

Brendan takes on leading roles for TheatreiNQ as well as being the Chief Lighting and Set Designer, Builder and Technician. The job of at least 8 men within a government-funded theatre company. In the past six years, Brendan has played 22 leading roles, designed & built 18 Sets and designed and implemented 13 Lighting Designs.
SIX YEARS AGO, Brendan O’Connor made the decision to return and start a theatre company in Townsville – TheatreiNQ. To many, including his agent & colleagues, it seemed he was throwing away his acting career, but for Brendan, it has been the beginning of a journey of creativity and self-discovery. Trained by the late Jean-Pierre Voos, Brendan was a founding member of Voos’ Tropic Line Theatre, performing with the company for six years. Like most, his desire to make a living out of his talent drew him south to Melbourne where he slowly made a name for himself playing guest roles on television shows such as Neighbours – holding the record for the most guest appearances playing nine different characters. Whilst TV and Commercials paid good money, Brendan’s passion has always been the theatre and he is most proud of his 18 years as an ensemble member with the Australian Shakespeare Company. Under the direction of outdoor Shakespeare pioneer, Glenn Elston, Brendan played lead roles in A Midsum-

mer Night’s Dream, Richard Iii, The Taming Of The Shrew, Much Ado About Nothing and many more that also saw him touring all over the country. In 2008, his beloved mentor Jean-Pierre Voos passed away and for the next two years he returned to Townsville with his partner, Terri Brabon, to perform and help produce Shakespeare Under the Stars, reminding him of his love for North Queensland and performing for regional audiences. The decision to leave behind a career in Melbourne for the uncertainty of launching a regional independent theatre company wasn’t an easy one. Luckily for Brendan, TheatreiNQ has been a resounding success developing into a mainstage season of productions and an Actor Training Program – The Bridge Project. The Project has seen much success in four years of operation with many young local actors now studying at NIDA, WAAPA and other prestigious schools around the country.

FRITTATA OF POTATO, CHORIZO, CARAMELISED ONION & BLACK OLIVE SERVES 4 Preparation time: 15 minutes Cooking time: 25 minutes 500 grams brushed white potatoes, peeled and halved 1 teaspoon coconut oil 200 grams mild chorizo, sliced 1 large brown onion, quartered and sliced 4 tablespoons olive oil 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped 12 black, semi-dried olives or Spanish olives, pitted and chopped 6 eggs sea salt ground black pepper chopped parsley, to serve Place the potatoes in a small saucepan and cover with cold water. Bring to the boil and cook, uncovered, for 10 minutes. Strain, rinse under cold water and thinly slice. While the potatoes are cooking, heat the coconut oil in a deep frying pan over medium heat. Add the chorizo and cook for 2–3 minutes on each side, until browned. Remove to a plate and reserve the chorizo fat and juices in the pan. Once the chorizo has cooled down, dice it roughly. Add the onion and olive oil to the frying pan and cook over low– medium heat for 5–7 minutes, stirring a few times, until soft and golden. Add the garlic, sliced potato, chopped olives and chorizo, and stir through. In a bowl, whisk and season the eggs with a generous pinch of sea salt and some black pepper. Pour over the potatoes and rotate the pan to spread the egg mixture evenly. Cover with a lid and cook over medium heat for 3–4 minutes until cooked through the bottom half. Pop the pan under a hot grill for a further 3 minutes, until golden brown on top. Sprinkle the chopped parsley over the top to serve. NUTRITION NOTES: This dish is well balanced in most nutrients but it’s particularly high in vitamin C, selenium and potassium. Per serve: 570 calories, 30 grams carbohydrates, 41 grams fat, 4 grams fibre, 23 grams protein. Tip: For a vegetarian version, simply omit the chorizo. Regular sausage or even some salami can be used instead of chorizo. Sweet potato can be used instead of white potato if avoiding nightshades.

BAKED SALMON SERVES 4 Preparation time: 5 minutes Cooking time: 15 minutes 4 x 150 gram salmon fillets sea salt 6 teaspoons homemade chilli sauce (see below for the recipe) Preheat the oven to 200°C (conventional). Place the salmon fillets, skin-side down, on a sheet of baking paper on a baking tray. Season each fillet with the sea salt and spread 1½ teaspoons of sweet chilli sauce on top. Bake for 13–15 minutes, depending on the thickness of the fillets. NUTRITION NOTES: Salmon is a fantastic source of anti- inflammatory, skin loving Omega-3 fatty acids as well as all B vitamins, selenium and magnesium. It’s a perfect anti-ageing food. Per serve: 225 calories, 3 grams carbohydrates, 10 grams fat, 1 gram fibre, 30 grams protein. Tip: Other fish can be used in this recipe and of course you can use a regular store-bought sweet chilli sauce or omit it completely and sprinkle the fillets with some chilli flakes, ginger and garlic.
WITH HOME-MADE SWEET CHILLI SAUCE Makes about ⅔ cup Preparation time: 10 minutes Cooking time: 15 minutes 2½ long red chillies (1 with seeds, 1½ deseeded), finely chopped 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped 2 thin, thumb-sized pieces ginger, finely chopped ¼ cup apple cider vinegar ⅔ cup water 2½ tablespoons honey generous pinch of sea salt 1 tablespoon arrowroot powder In a small saucepan, combine all the ingredients except the arrowroot, and bring to the boil over medium heat. Reduce the heat to low and cook for 10–15 minutes, then reduce the heat further, to very low. Dissolve the arrowroot powder in 2 tablespoons of water, then add to the sauce. Mix through and let it thicken for 20–30 seconds, then turn off the heat and let the sauce cool before pouring it into a clean jar or a bottle. NUTRITION NOTES: Chilli, garlic and ginger are all known for their immunity boosting properties and digestive support. Per serve (1 tablespoon): 22 calories, 0 gram fat, 5 grams carbohydrates, 0 gram protein or fibre. Tip: Ideally, prepare the sauce ahead of time. Keep leftovers in an air-tight glass jar or a bottle in the fridge for up to a month.

MINI CHOCOLATE SOUFFLÉ CAKES SERVES 6 Preparation time: 25 minutes Cooking time: 30 minutes + time to cook the sweet potato coconut oil or butter, for greasing 4 eggs, separated 1 tablespoon vanilla essence ½ cup cooled melted ghee, butter or coconut oil (or a combination) ⅓ cup preferred sweetener such as honey, maple syrup or rice malt, plus 1 tablespoon extra ⅓ heaped cup cacao powder 1 cup cooked and mashed sweet potato (baked is best) 1½ tablespoons tapioca flour or arrowroot flour ⅓ teaspoon bicarbonate of soda sea salt
MINI CHOCOLATE SOUFFLÉ CAKES
coconut ice-cream, strawberries and mint, to serve (optional) Preheat the oven to 175°C. Grease a tray of 6–8 muffin cases with a little coconut oil or butter. Alternatively you can use individual ramekins. Using an electric mixer, whisk the yolks for 1 minute, until creamy. Add the vanilla essence, melted ghee/oil and your preferred sweetener, and whisk until well incorporated. Add the cacao powder and mashed sweet potato. Whisk for 20 seconds, until well incorporated, then sift through the bicarbonate of soda and tapioca or arrowroot flour. Whisk again for 20 seconds, until the mixture thickens and starts to form a ripple trace. Place the egg whites and a pinch of salt in a separate, spotlessly clean bowl. Whisk for 1½ minutes, until soft peaks form. Add half the egg whites to the chocolate mix and gently fold in with a spatula. Add the rest and gently fold until everything is well combined. Add 2–3 tablespoons of mix per muffin case, not quite to the top, because the cakes will rise. Or fill the pre-greased ramekins with the mixture, leaving about 1 cm from the top. Place the tray on the middle shelf of the oven and bake for 25 minutes. The cakes should feel quite soft and bouncy when you touch them and they will be super-moist and soft on the inside. Once baked, turn the oven off and open the door. Place the tray on the oven door, and allow to cool for 5 minutes. This gradual temperature change should prevent them from collapsing. Serve immediately as is or with a dollop of coconut ice-cream, fresh strawberries and mint. These can be eaten warm or cold and can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for a few days. Tip: Baking time might vary slightly depending on your oven or how big your muffin casings are. If you are baking it as a round cake in a spring-form or a cake tin, give it about 45 minutes. NUTRITION NOTES: This is actually a very low glycemic index dessert, coming at 14 on the glycemic load scale. It’s also rich in vitamins A & C, iron, magnesium, manganese, copper and selenium. Per serve: 280 calories, 29 grams carbohydrates, 17 grams fat, 4 grams fibre, 6 grams protein. DUO MAGAZINE OCTOBER 2015 duomagazine.com.au 123

AKA: The Townsville Magpie (www.townsvillemagpie.com.au) I’m renowned for: annoying and entertaining people in the blog you love – until you’re in it. The song that describes me best is: Well, it sure ain’t Kristoffersen’s Silver Tongue Devil. As a child I always… Well, yes, we all did, didn’t we, but do we have to talk about it? (But I swear I’ve never since tied firecrackers to a dog’s tail.) If I had a superpower it would be... China – the bonus is that the way things are going, in a few years, I’d own Australia, too. Or maybe India for the curries, especially vindaloo, tindaloo and headfortheloo. When I’m alone in my car I think about: Umm… am I leaving or arriving? And why? But I’ll sit here a while, the A/C is sooo good. Right now I wish I was… sober and continent… oops, sorry, that should be serene and content. My favourite day is: Tomorrow. One thing I can’t live without is: see above (bit self-evident, eh?). In five years from now I hope I’m… looking forward to tomorrow. Last gift I gave someone was: Sent Gina Rinehart a cow bell, so her kids can hear her coming. Best advice I’ve been given: When a donkey brays at you, don’t bray back. But the most frequent advice I receive on the blog involves sex and travel. My biggest regret: Tiffany Brewster, 17 February 1961. The best day of my life (so far): 21 March 1961 – this also involved Tiffany Brewster (Life Lesson, fellas – when flowers don’t work, begging can get you over the line). Two celebrities I’d like to dine with: Sarah Palin and Donald Trump… just to see if they’re real – and compare hairdos. The motto I live by: Whatever happens next, it’s going to be interesting.

AKA: Macca or Lis. I’m renowned for: having many things on the go at once, keeping them on track and always having a Plan B. The song that describes me best is: The Luckiest by Ben Folds Five. I have been very fortunate throughout my life. The overseas city I’d love to move to is: Vancouver, for the great outdoors lifestyle and multicultural diversity or San Sebastian for the Bueno food and beautiful architecture. As I child I always… had strong opinions which meant I argued a lot with my teachers and parents. My year 12 teacher’s comment was “Please don’t argue with the examiners – you won’t win that one!” If I had a superpower it would be... mind reading. When I’m alone in my car I think about: what I need to be doing that day, that week, that month. Right now I wish I was… in Spain touring around in a campervan with my husband. My favourite day is: my wedding anniversary. One thing I can’t live without is: my husband Steve and my iPad. Townsville is a great place to live because… you can have a great life without having to spend a fortune. What is your trademark fashion style: three Cs: Cue at work, casual at home, Charlie Brown when I go out. In five years from now I hope I’m… still working in a job I love with lots of stimulating challenges. Last gift I gave someone was: a bottle of Möet. Best advice I’ve been given: Be strategic and think about the long game – don’t get caught up in the small stuff. My biggest regret: Working for a company I didn’t like working for in a job I did like for too long – but live and learn, it’s made me determined to get the balance right. One place visitors to Townsville must see is: Townsville is finally developing a food culture – check out Sprout and Otto’s for great gourmet and organic food. The sough dough at Ottos is the best. The best day of my life (so far): My (second) wedding day. The motto I live by: She who dares wins.
AKA: Big T. I’m renowned for: being tall and hard working. The song that describes me best is: Your Latest Trick by Dire Straits, something you do on a regular basis as a designer. As I child I always… took advantage of my younger brother. Then he grew up taller than me and had the last laugh. If I had a superpower it would it be... mind reading. It would come in very handy when trying to understand my clients, and my wife. When I’m alone in my car I think about: It varies, but I always play music that I can sing to – helps me relax. Right now I wish I was… sitting on a million dollar yacht in Bora Bora drinking Pina Coladas. My favourite day is: Any day I’m on holidays with my family. One thing I can’t live without is: my family. Without them the rest is worthless. In five years from now I hope I’m… sitting on a million dollar yacht in Bora Bora drinking Pina Coladas – and the yacht is mine! Last gift I gave someone was: a new mobile phone for my father. I thought he would answer it; instead it’s just another device he can’t figure out how to use. Best advice I’ve been given: There’s a difference between intelligence and knowledge. My biggest regret: Blowing out my knee in 1992. I was in the best shape of my basketball career and was set to go into the Crocs (then the Suns) first year in the NBL. Though I recovered physically, I never regained that excellent form. The best day of my life (so far): My wedding day, a wonderful day that set my life on a path of great happiness. Two celebrities I’d like to dine with: Nathan Fillion and Hugh Jackman. Two funny, down-to-earth guys who are brilliant at what they do and the kind of guys everyone can relate to. They would make the dinner an absolute hoot. The motto I live by: You get out of life what you put in.
I’m renowned for: my shoes! The song that describes me best is: Bridge of Light by P!nk. The overseas city I’d love to move to is: anywhere in Scotland. There is something about the place that makes me want to be there…perhaps it’s the Scottish blood in me! As I child I always… blamed my older brother for everything!! However, I’ve since found out that my parents knew it was me all along. If I had a superpower it would it be... to read minds – the interesting things you could learn! When I’m alone in my car I think about: No thinking… just the singing of anything P!nk at the top of my lungs!! Right now I wish I was… nowhere else. Life is amazing at the moment… so I want to enjoy it as much as I can. My favourite day is: Christmas…there is nothing more enjoyable than seeing your kids open their presents from Santa whilst eating and drinking far too much with family. One thing I can’t live without is: my shoes. You can never have enough. Townsville is a great place to live because… of the people. We’ve lived in a number of places throughout Queensland, and Townsville people would have to be the friendliest. They really do make the place! What is your trademark fashion style: It is all about the shoes! (Are you sensing a trend here). In five years from now I hope I’m… not crying! Five years from now my eldest will be finishing high school. The thought of my baby finishing school is just too difficult to comprehend. Last gift I gave someone was: a new fishing reel for my husband on Father’s Day. Apparently, it was the one ‘he just had to have’! The best day of my life (so far): The day my husband, Kent, asked me to marry him. My life since has been an amazing roller coaster of love and laughter, with two extra amazing sons, Brodie and Joshua, added along the way. The motto I live by: Never let anyone change who you are.
