DUOPublisher’sLetter

It’s been another big month of change here at DUO. You may have noticed our new masthead/logo? And we’re launching our new website on 14 October. Take a look then and tell us what you think. What happened when I saw the Hanoi Fire Brigade. Early disclaimer: Like everyone, I greatly appreciate the emergency services people and their work but this is a true story in another country. Last December my wife Stacey and I went to Hanoi (Vietnam) for the cold weather, the adventure, the culture and many other reasons. We stayed in a very well run 5 star hotel whose name I can’t mention because I’d really like to stay there again. One day a letter was slipped under the door informing us that there’d be a fire drill at 2pm and we’d have to remain inside if we were in the hotel at that time. Stacey stayed but I went out and managed

to arrive back just before two. Naturally I wasn’t allowed in so I waited outside with the staff as a loud fire engine arrived with all bells clanging. There was no mucking around. As soon as the truck stopped two young guys wearing huge helmets jumped out, climbed onto the roof of the truck and started up the water cannon. Now this was a 15 storey hotel and (with the truck’s poor water pressure) after a fair bit of time they were still only washing the windows of the second floor! We were staying on the tenth floor by the way. While this was happening, three other firefighters had run a fire hose out and connected a very large nozzle (?). The lead firefighter, I guess because he’s holding the nozzle (?), charged through the centre door into the Reception area dragging the (still flat) hose behind him. He looked to the firefighters outside to turn on the water when he realised he’d come through a revolving door. He had a choice of three doors and picked the wrong one. And unfortunately the one he chose was still going round. With magnificent composure, especially with so many people looking, he tried to walk back through the revolving door as it kept moving. Fortunately someone in hotel management knew which button to press to stop the door and he could go back out the way he’d come in. Unfazed the firefighters packed away their hoses and drove away. Drill over. Hope you have a great month and enjoy your DUO Glamour Issue! Scott Morrison Publisher

STAR OF THE MONTH

Libra 23 SEPTEMBER – 22 OCTOBER

Librans are fired up with abundant passion in a year that also gives you permission to firmly lay down the law. Sparks will fly in your social life. It may become clear, however, that in at least one particular relationship – enough is enough. In fact, it will take a brave soul to cross you. You take an unusual direction at work and turn good fortune into lasting success.

Astrologer Tanya Obreza reveals what’s in the stars for you this month…

Scorpio

Sagittarius

Capricorn

Aquarius

23 OCTOBER – 21 NOVEMBER

22 NOVEMBER - 21 DECEMBER

22 DECEMBER – 19 JANUARY

20 JANUARY – 18 FEBRUARY

You have the enviable ability to catch hold of yourself in times of chaos and do a quick reality check. Just as well, as life’s been a busy blur of activity recently – and you’ve probably made many more changes than usual. Unnerving, but certainly exhilarating. Just as you like it.

The month comes loaded with promise, with increased cash flow thrown in for good measure. Still, not everyone will be keen to go along with your ideas. Stay true to you, Sagittarius. Know your goals and don’t be guilted or seduced into following another’s dreams.

Life may feel like an uphill struggle this month, with challenges causing frustration. Should things not go to plan, relax. Calm that anxious mind and you’ll find the strength to battle on. From adversity comes victory, and a supreme sense of self satisfaction. More money, too – and an increasingly relaxed love life.

A sense of excitement is in the air. About time, too – life has been so dull lately. Extra activity in your social life could lead to unexpected flirtations. And because you feel great, you look great. Your natural glow returns. Don’t worry about money – there’s a surprise just around the corner.

Pisces

Aries

Taurus

Gemini

19 FEBRUARY – 20 MARCH

21 MARCH – 20 APRIL

21 APRIL – 20 MAY

21 MAY – 21 JUNE

Someone confronts you with a hard luck story, but it’s nothing you haven’t heard before. This week, determination comes into play as you simply refuse to be seen as an endless source of funding. Gently suggest that they stand on their own financial feet. You’ll be amazed at what such tough love can do.

A friend acts in a heartfelt way. Their generosity and grace moves you deeply – so use this opportunity to let them know how much you appreciate their support. If feeling unsure about how to say it, let actions speak louder than words – a small gift, perhaps? This loving soul worth it.

As rebellious planets flagrantly disrupt the cosmic flow, an unusual chain of events is set into motion. Call it a happy accident, or sheer coincidence – but whatever the reason, there’s an excellent chance you achieve acclaim. This good luck can also be attributed to your love life. Work hard, play hard.

Even the greatest thinkers occasionally need reality checks. Sure, your dreams are attainable – but only if they’re physically possible. What’s more, don’t ignore alternative solutions. A simplified love life could also help lower blood pressure. Choose to play the field thoughtlessly, and you may get caught out.

Cancer

Leo

Virgo

22 JUNE – 22 JULY

23 JULY – 22 AUGUST

23 AUGUST – 22 SEPTEMBER

If you haven’t already made changes, October twists your arm to do so. The Sun and Mercury help to increase earning potential, and careers earn a much needed boost. After the 14th, your love life takes priority and good fortune comes via your communication skills, although it might not arrive in the way you expect.

10

DUOMagazine October 2016

Watch for an opportunity to stretch your imagination, Leo. Turn your dreams into more workable forms and they’ll move closer to reality. But these matters won’t consume all of your time. The cosmos obligingly keeps relationships strong, with an extra charge of dramatic delights. A deep and intense fascination seems likely.

Virgos are a law unto themselves. So when October offers something different, you’re keen to give it a go. Other people’s schemes, no matter how tempting, are ignored as you become more determined than ever to follow your own path. But take some time to relax too. Pace yourself. A little rest does wonders for stamina.

GEORGE COLBR AN From humble beginnings, George Colbran went on to own nine McDonald’s restaurants and use that power for good by establishing North Queensland’s only Ronald McDonald House.

A city is only as strong as those who forge ahead for its best interests despite the many obstacles in the way of progress. Fortunately for Townsville there are many big-picture thinkers we’re proud to call our own. In this series we celebrate some of the doers who’ve helped put Townsville and the North on the map.

COMMUNITY CHAMPION “Our family endeavours to give back to the community that has given so much to us,” says retired businessman George Colbran, who opened the first McDonald’s for Northern Australia at The Lakes 28 years ago. “I learned very quickly that to be successful and grow you needed to be a people person with the aim of taking your employees on the same ride.” By the end of that ride, when George retired in 2013, he had nine McDonald’s and 950 employees – the largest McDonald’s operation outside of McDonald’s themselves in Queensland. Community-minded, George is well-known in Townsville for a multitude of roles he’s played: Chair of the Finance Committee on the Northern Regional Health Authority; Deputy Chair of Work North; inaugural member of the Townsville Enterprise board; founding board member of the McDonald’s Crocodiles, he’s on the Townsville Sister City Committee and has been a member of The Rotary Club of Townsville for 27 years. An indomitable force for good, George was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in 2001. Of all the many causes close to his heart, however, George says his involvement with North Queensland’s only Ronald McDonald House in Townsville has been the most satisfying because of all the good it does. “Trevor Wood, who at the time was the medical superintendent at the old Townsville Hospital, asked if I would help raise money for the cause,” George says. “We originally had an old building next to the hospital we could start with but when the hospital moved out to Douglas we lost that opportunity. That meant the original target for fundraising jumped from $480,000 to $2.4 million. Local businesses came on board to the tune of $600,000 to get things moving.” George’s good friend Tony Ireland was among those who chipped in and the doors for Ronald McDonald House North Queensland finally opened in 2004. Located on the Townsville Hospital Campus, it provides accommodation for up to 100 people a night – families with children being treated at the Paediatric Ward and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Plans are also underway for a Ronald McDonald House Family Room at the Townsville Hospital for parents of critically ill children in the Children’s Ward. To be completed by June next year, it will have two bedrooms with space for a crib/trundle bed in each room. It will also have a full-size family kitchen, laundry facilities and large common area including PC, TV and play space. It’s estimated that Ronald McDonald House North Queensland has helped more than 5000 families of all different backgrounds, from the Outback to the Cape, over the past 12 years. “I value family above all else followed by my health,” says George. “If you’ve been successful with both of those it enables you to succeed in many ways with happiness as the main goal.” In January of 1996 George was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma and told by doctors his life expectancy would be 18 months to three years. Not one to take the prognosis as gospel, George sought the advice of a naturopath and, after applying their suggested changes to his lifestyle, the cancer remained dormant for the next 14 years. “Following a fall in 2009, however, the tumours began growing and spreading, so I was forced to have a course of chemotherapy treatments – eight over a 20-week period,” George says. “The last infusion of chemo was in July 2010 and I have Intragam P (white blood cells) infused every four weeks to strengthen my immune system. Apart from the peripheral neuropathy in my hands and feet caused by the chemo I’m reasonably well.” Determined to make the most of his retirement years George, and his partner of 50 years Lorraine, have plenty of travel adventures planned and also want to spend more time enjoying Magnetic Island. “We have a small house at Horseshoe Bay that we love,” George says. “It’s paradise over there.”

GRAHAM JACK SO N OAM He’s such a well-known public figure that it may seem you know all there is to know about Loloma Jewellers founder Graham Jackson. So would you be surprised to learn his passion for working with charities was born out of time he spent as a professional pianist?

VISIONARY FAT H E R S of T O W N S V I L L E

THE FIXER It was playing Rachmaninoff’s Prelude in Boogie on Australia’s Amateur Hour that gave 17-year-old Graham Jackson his shot at becoming a professional pianist. “It opened the door for me as a feature Boogie pianist at many important Brisbane events and weddings as well as being a pianist for a magician,” says Graham. “While the magician performed his ‘Sawing a Woman in Half’ act at charity events I played chords and music suitable for the occasion. I’ve been close to many charities ever since.” Passionate about helping others whenever the opportunity arises, Graham has been involved in a long list of organisations at board level. From the Bush Children’s Home and PCYCs to the Red Shield Appeal, Salvation Army and Lions, Apex Club and Rotary Club, Graham is ever-ready to roll up his sleeves and help out. A natural ‘fixer’, he’s also been the brains behind getting many businesses off the ground (Loloma Jewellers is a shining example). It’s coming to the rescue of local companies that had gone into liquidation, however, that Graham considers to be his finest hour. “I was flying back from Sydney from a Showcase Jewellers meeting in the early ’90s when I saw a story in the Financial Review that said the two worst locations in Australia, in terms of banks not lending money, were Illawarra Wollongong and Townsville,” Graham says. “Early the next morning I arranged to meet Professor Ted Scott and John Lyons at TEL and we whiteboarded all the companies that had gone into liquidation or were under administration. We then wrote a business plan for our new company, Trinity Pty Ltd, which we founded to raise money and buy back the businesses by shareholders contributing $250,000 each. “We then had to find the businesses and advise them they wouldn’t make money if thy invested in Trinity, but they wouldn’t lose much either, and we would have Townsville’s successful business image restored. We’d lost four Townsville-listed public companies as well.” Eventually with Graham as Chairman, and with a board of well-respected local businessmen and academics, Trinity Pty Ltd continued for seven years, successfully buying many receiverships. “I remember both ferry terminals were in financial trouble and had to be bought to keep them afloat,” Graham says. “Radical Bay was in receivership and had to be sold and the projected hotel site in Flinders Street East (now a car park) needed to be sold too but there were no buyers. Trinity bought all of them and, with the help of many board members, we redeveloped management in many cases and then found buyers to have them trading again.” Having lived in Townsville since 1957, Graham has been pleased to see many markers of progress over the years. He cites the development of the bypass highway and new Ross River Bridge, the expansion of James Cook University, the opening of the Korean Zinc Refinery and the building of the Stuart-Port Access Highway as important milestones for the city. “It’s been amazing to watch the growth of the mining industry, with 1200 fly-in fly out miners, and to accept the collapse and then watch the expansion of urban real estate,” Graham says. “I was on Hainan Island in China last year and stayed at Haitang Bay where they’ve just built 34 luxury 5 and 7-star hotels on a 21 mile stretch of beach with the world’s largest duty-free shopping centre in the middle. “What I’d love to see in Townsville’s future is the development of several 5-star hotels on our beachfront. If we developed luxury hotels along The Strand and on Magnetic Island it would strengthen tourism and help make us the wedding centre for North Queensland.”

WHO DO YOU KNOW IN THIS MONTH’S DUO?

DUOMagazine | Profile

Right: Rachel struts her stuff at the World Beauty Fashion and Fitness show in Toronto where she was crowned Bikini World Champion.

She’s A HIIT She’s only 23 but Rachel Dillon’s Townsville-based body transformation business is already booming and she says High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) is the secret. Writer Kylie Davis Photographer Toby Harrison

IT has taken North Ward resident Rachel Dillon a lot of hard work and a radical rethink about her fitness approach to get where she is today. Your typical cardio fanatic, Rachel would do hours and hours of workouts and restrict what she ate but she still wasn’t getting the body she wanted. “It wasn’t until I started researching that I realised my approach could’ve been detrimental to my metabolism, nutritional intake and overall health and wellbeing,” Rachel says. “I spent more and more time studying the theoretical and physical aspects of training and nutrition and when I met my business partner Jaryd Terkelsen, who introduced me to weights and high-intensity functional training, I saw my body transform before my eyes. “Resistance training went against everything I thought I knew. I thought doing weights would make me bulky and manly but that wasn’t the case. Once I started lifting, everything tightened up and I began to see the muscle tone I’d been trying so hard to achieve.” Keen to share the secrets of her success with others Rachel started personal training, working with clients one-on-one. Her business, Bodies by Rachel, really took off in 2013 and has been snowballing in popularity ever since. The team now includes Rachel, Jaryd Terkelsen and Emma Dillon and they offer High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) camps as well as personal training. Convinced that HIIT incorporating weights is the key to building lean muscle while shedding fat, Rachel says the good news is that these workouts are only 20 to 40 minutes. “The sessions are fast, fun and extremely effective,” Rachel says. “I’ve also produced

a guide that offers a way of eating that’s lifestyle-based rather than diet-based. To me it isn’t about calorie-deficient diets and trying to lose a lot of weight in a short period of time. If you fuel your body with the right foods you will then be able to maintain a healthy lifestyle all year round.” Last year Rachel competed in the World Beauty Fashion and Fitness (WBFF) show on the Gold Coast and walked away with a PRO card that qualified her to compete at the WBFF Worlds in Toronto 2016. “I trained hard for nine months leading up to the event and finally found myself on the world stage in August,” Rachel says. “I was up against some of the most spectacular and beautiful girls in the world but took out first place as the WBFF Bikini World Champion.” Everyone has different motives that drive them but for Rachel it’s the dislike of giving up that keeps her pushing forward. “Nothing is better than the feeling of accomplishing what you may have thought was impossible,” she says. “Life isn’t about looking a certain way or trying to impress other people, it’s about being happy within yourself and setting your own goals and smashing them.” CONNECT NOW www.bodiesbyrachel.com.au www.facebook.com/bodiesbyrachel

Where Are They Now? KAYLEEN ALLEN Managing Director Tourism Gems What’s your link to Townsville? I’m originally a Cairns girl but moved to Townsville in 1992 to take up the role of Tourism and Special Events Manager at Townsville Enterprise. As an organisation we didn’t have a lot of money but we worked closely with the tourism industry, who were prepared to put their hands in their own pockets. We worked with the local operators to develop a strategic plan to market the city and region. Where are you now? I left Townsville to take up a role with Tourism Queensland, originally marketing the Gold Coast and Central Queensland, and later other fabulous Queensland destinations including the Sunshine Coast and Whitsundays. For the past six years I’ve owned my own tourism consultancy business, Tourism Gems, and have worked with some amazing product nationally and internationally. I now live in Brisbane and also enjoy this river city. Apart from working in the tourism industry, which I love, I have a personal passion to help make this world a kinder place. I’m currently working with the Global Secretariat of the World Kindness Movement and am attending their International Council Meeting in Kuala Lumpur this month to facilitate a strategy

So much talent, so little space to feature them all… that’s why we’re continuing our series on what former Townsville stars-in-the-making are up to now. Make sure you give us a call at DUO if you know someone we should be catching up with.

session for them. I’m excited about the possibilities. How did your time in Townsville set you up for success? Townsville gave me an opportunity to try many new things and do what I love. My team and I worked hard, very hard, and our efforts were rewarded when we won the Queensland and then the Australian Tourism Awards for running the best Regional Tourism Authority in Australia. Do you still return to Townsville to visit? In 2015 my old team, who were scattered around the country, decided we should all get together for our first reunion on Magnetic Island. We had so much fun that most of us came back again in June this year. Townsville will always have a special place in my heart.

BUDD WILLIAMSON Professional Bull Rider What’s your link to North Queensland? I grew up in Ayr on my family’s farm where there were 1800 mango trees, 3000 tonne of sugar cane and 200 head of cattle. I started riding horses probably before I could walk. We used to travel the shows competing with jumping horses until I was 14. That’s when I realised I was good enough to take on bull riding. I was hooked after the first ride.

Where are you now? I’m back in Australia (from Texas) working in the barber shop with Dad and on the family farm as well as getting to a few bull-riding events around Australia. My next major event will be the PBR in Townsville next month. It’s definitely high on my priority list to win. My journey to leaving Australia started when I got a scholarship to go to college in Texas and ride bulls. Riding bulls has taken me all over the US, Canada and Mexico. I’ve almost lost count of what’s been broken or reconstructed by doctors. I still have a house in Texas but plan to commute to events more now rather than stay there full-time. I always love getting off the plane in Townsville and feeling that heat – I know I’m home. What’s your most memorable win to date? The Chris Shivers Invitational in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. I had just arrived in the States and all the big names were there. I won $12,000, a trophy buckle and a trophy saddle that night. It was an amazing feeling to be able to mix it with the best. How did growing up in Ayr set you up for success? I think growing up in North Queensland gave me the ruggedness to keep going when times get tough.

HARRISON FOSTER MasterChef Top 10 Finalist What’s your link to Townsville? I grew up in Balgal Beach and, after school, worked at an aquaculture farm, breeding clownfish and marine species. I then went on to work locally at the pineapple farm up there before cocktail bartending at island resorts on Fitzroy and Heron Island.

Do you still come ‘home’ to Townsville to visit? I’ve still got plenty of friends and family in Townsville and I often make trips back up North. I love the people in North Queensland. They’re my people.

SARAH MURR Musical Theatre Star

What was your time on MasterChef like? I made some good friends and had some cool experiences while filming the show but it was also one of the most stressful times in my life. The days were really long with the constant fear of not knowing what would happen next. It was worth it though – I got to eat a lot of really amazing food and meet some top chefs as well.

What’s your link to Townsville? I grew up in Townsville and graduated from Ryan Catholic College in 2011. Since I was a little girl I’ve had dancing, acting and singing lessons and eventually joined the Townsville Choral Society and NQOMT and performed in several of their shows. I had always dreamt of being on stage. It felt like such a distant dream but I’ve been lucky enough to live my dream at 22.

Where are you now? I’ve made the big move to Tasmania where I’m exploring my options post-MasterChef. Right now I’m making cheese and cured meats with an artisan cheese company down in Southern Tasmania called Flowerpot Cheese. The produce here is second to none. Tasmania has the most amazing seafood, meats, cheeses and, of course, alcohol. Being particularly fond of good food I felt like this was the place to be for me.

Where are you now? I’m travelling the world with Cameron Mackintosh’s production of Les Misérables as the first cover (understudy) Madame Thenardier and Ensemble member. At the beginning of last year I’d never been overseas. Now I’ve performed and travelled to Manila, Singapore and New York and, in October, I’ll be going to London and Dubai. Leaving Townsville to study a Bachelor of Musical Theatre at the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University was the

hardest thing I’ve ever done but the best. In my final year we were lucky enough to be put forward for industry auditions. I auditioned for Opera Queensland and scored my first professional show as a minor lead role in the beautiful opera Candide. Shortly after that I auditioned for Les Mis, which I’m touring with now. This year I’ve spent more time overseas in hotels than in my own bed! How did your time in Townsville set you up for success? I had so many opportunities to perform – musicals, Carols by Candlelight, the national anthem at the Cowboys, Fire and Crocs games and even my own cabaret. Do you still come ‘home’ to Townsville to visit? It’s hard to keep in contact while you’re away working due to time zones so FaceTime is my saving grace. My parents are pretty good at it now and so are my dachshunds! Between tours, I love coming back just to relax in my childhood home and drive around familiar places. I will always call Townsville home and I’m so proud to say where I’m from.

DUOMagazine | Profile

From Here To Hollywood Would it surprise you to learn we have a Hollywood film producer right here in Townsville? Thanks to the latest internet technology, you’d be amazed by what’s happening in our very own home town. BY day, you’ll find Lyndon Berresford in his Flinders Street studio where, as Creative Director of the AEC Group, he’s busy developing international brands from right here in North Queensland. By night, you’ll find Lyndon beavering away at his home studio in South Townsville where he works as an art director and producer for Hollywood film production company Noel Braham Entertainment. “In my free time I’ve always been interested in conceptual and fantasy art and about three years ago I produced some concepts for a Disney competition,” Lyndon says. After one of these went viral Lyndon was approached by film producer Noel Braham, who is based in Hollywood and had seen some of Lyndon’s work online. Noel wanted to see if Lyndon was interested in designing some conceptual art for a small independent film he was producing. “The project was being filmed in California for another International Disney Film Competition and he had no idea I lived in North Queensland,” Lyndon says. “With the fast NBN I have at home I’ve been able to work on the film while my wife Lisa is watching Netflix,” Lyndon says. “I’ve often been on Skype to LA receiving a rough cut of the film via file transfer while Orange is the New Black is streaming in the background.” As Lyndon’s input into the film grew, he was made producer of Star Wars: Exile, which was launched earlier this year at the historic Vista Theatre in Los Angeles. It has since been screened at five film festivals around North America, including two screenings at the Chinese Theatre in Hollywood (the one with all of the stars’ hand prints out the front!) and

an IMAX Theatre in New York. “I must admit I got a huge kick out of seeing my name up on the big screen in Hollywood,” Lyndon says. “We’ve had fantastic feedback and were nominated as a finalist in the Audience Category Award for the 2016 Disney Fan Film Awards.” Lyndon travelled to London for the Awards with the film’s creator and admits it was ‘surreal’ sharing a London flat with a Hollywood actor and director (Noel Braham). The scenario soon grew comfortable though. So comfortable that Noel and Lyndon found themselves discussing other projects. “We both had similar ideas for a new film and have since gone into the early stages of pre-production,” Lyndon says. “I can’t reveal much at this stage but it’s a sci-fi thriller and we’re looking to film both in Los Angeles and North Queensland with a release date pencilled in for late 2018. I’m sure there will be a chance for locals to get involved.”

“WE’RE SPREADING THE WORD THAT BUILDING ON A SLOPING SITE IS NOT IMPOSSIBLE OR RIDICULOUSLY EXPENSIVE. WE HAVE THE EXPERIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE LAY OF THE LAND.” DANIEL CAVALLARO

USING the power of 3D modelling, Allaro Homes Townsville’s specially developed software allows their in-house designers to study clients’ sites and produce the optimum orientation and layout, right down to the finest details. “With our 3D modelling software, our clients are able to see firsthand the effects of sun and shade on the entire house before construction commences,” says Construction Supervisor Daniel Cavallaro. “Clients can view their new home in a cinemalike experience complete with 3D glasses.” This 3D advantage also allows the designers to work with the contours of the site to minimise excavation and maximise value for money. “We’re able to accurately price down to the smallest detail of every material used in the home,” Daniel says. “We’re spreading the word that building on a sloping site is not impossible or ridiculously expensive. We have the experience and technology to take advantage of the lay of the land.” A sister company to Allaro Homes Cairns, Allaro Homes Townsville was established in 2007. Daniel and his partner Leah Juett moved to Townsville in 2014 to take over

the operations. Daniel has been with the company for 15 years and began with a school-based apprenticeship. He was awarded the HIA Apprentice of the Year in 2004 and his family have been involved in the North’s construction industry for more than 130 years. This year, Allaro Homes Townsville was awarded ‘Best Sloping Site’ at the Master Builders Regional Awards 2016 for their recently completed home in Riverside Ridge.

Allaro Homes Townsville team is focused on building lasting relationships. “The site supervisor and tradespeople who build our display homes are the same people who will build your home,” Leah says. “We’re also excited to soon be offering a new experience here at Allaro Homes Townsville with Oculus Rift. This will allow our clients to experience standing in their new home and navigating their way around before a stone is even turned on their block.”

“This recognition has strengthened our creditability as the sloping site specialist here in Townsville and the entire Allaro Homes Townsville team is to thank for that,” Daniel says. “Mark Davies is our Design Specialist. He’s been with the company for 11 years and is the mastermind behind the beautiful custom homes we’ve produced. “My partner Leah is our Business Manager and has a background in marketing and hospitality. She does an amazing job of looking after client relations.” Together with Administration and Accounts Officer Ashleigh Scott, Leah also manages the many day-to-day duties of running a business. The Bath House

An imaginative architectural extension to a Hermit Park Queenslander, affectionally dubbed ‘The Bath House’, has been shortlisted at the national level for the Australian Institute of Architects awards program.

WHEN Kerry McIlroy and Sue Cole approached Stephen de Jersey Architect about an extension to their Hermit Park Queenslander they had already spent years thinking about the project. Originally they had a far more extensive scheme prepared by others that was not within their budget so they decided the essence of their brief was to construct a deck to extend their living space over their well-established garden. “We believe that under the current economic conditions, people are seeking design solutions that are not only costeffective but also provide spaces which are multifunctional,” Stephen says. “We see our role as architect to lead a creative design process that leads to these kinds of solutions, regardless of budget.” Like many houses of its type, Kerry and Sue’s home had had a bathroom added directly to the rear, separated from the house by the landing of the back stairs. More recently they had installed new kitchen joinery, with a pantry in the space between the bathroom and the corner of the house. However, the bathroom on the rear of the dwelling blocked the connection between the kitchen and the garden. “In this project, we had an opportunity to reinterpret the two components that have been typically added to old Queenslanders – the bathroom and the deck,” Stephen says. “Reworking the kitchen, demolishing and replacing the bathroom and adding a new covered deck has created a series of lightfilled rooms that take full advantage of the garden view. It’s unusual for a bathroom to be external despite the fact Townsville’s hot and humid climate lend themselves to this solution.”

DUOMagazine October 2016

47

DUOHome+Travel

The existing kitchen joinery was also reconfigured and a new walk-in pantry added. A long sliding window now provides a servery connecting the kitchen to the covered deck, which has become the main entertaining area. Stairs between the deck and the bathroom provide direct access to the backyard and a new sunken garden room underneath. “From the existing house the ‘borrowing’ of space through view to the deck and beyond to the garden have created a feeling of being a part of the outdoors,” Stephen says. “The deck and bathroom connect visually with tree canopy and sky through light wells and strategically placed openings. We were pleased to hear after completion that the client’s friends have used the deck to stay overnight in the cooler months.

48

DUOMagazine October 2016

“We find our design approach leads to unanticipated experiences that aren’t usually briefed but always value-added to our projects.” Stephen was drawn to becoming an architect when he experienced the construction of his parents’ house under the guidance of some other esteemed local architects in Clayton Pemberton. “I’ve found I really enjoy multifaceted problem-solving through design,” Stephen says. “We strategically placed our practice here in Townsville to provide high level design solutions to our region. The solutions are globally sophisticated but locally generated.” The Bath House has already been awarded at regional and state level and was recently shortlisted at national level for the Australian

Institute of Architects (AIA) awards program. Over the past six months the project has had a constant flow of juries and other architects inspecting the project. It was also used for a drinks and dinner function as part of the recent AIA regional architecture conference, attended by a multitude of highly respected national and international architects. “Kerry and Sue have been very accommodating and wonderfully supportive hosts to all of these activities,” Stephen says. “They are very proud of the space and have been enjoying using it and sharing it with their many friends and guests.”

Amandira, a two-masted sailing vessel measuring 52 metres from bow to stern, was handcrafted by the Konjo tribe. A traditional Phinisi vessel, it combines the ancient romance of the spice trade with cutting-edge contemporary amenities, Amandira accommodates up to ten guests and a crew of ten (including a private chef and dive master) to cater to guests’ every need. Situated four and a half degrees south of the equator, the Spice Islands are tiny verdant islets in the Banda Sea. Sought after for their coveted nutmeg that could only be found there, the islands today are a serene tropical paradise. Offering an extraordinary experience for scuba divers, the islands boast an underwater oasis with vibrant coral reefs, teeming with marine life where guests can snorkel, dive, fish, paddleboard or kayak. Above water, the islands are covered in tropical forest and fringed with powder white beaches. Enchanting villages are scattered over five of the islands, while old Dutch forts can be explored on Banda Neira, Besar and Run, offering a glimpse into the islands’ fascinating past. All the while, Gunung Api, Banda’s ‘Fire Mountain’, broods over the islands. At 666m it is easily summited, and provides spectacular views of the archipelago. Following the Spice Island exploration, the vessel sets course for Raja Ampat. A region renowned for its biodiversity, Raja Ampat encompasses over 40,000 square kilometres and 1,500 islands in the northeast seas of the Indonesian Archipelago, where the Pacific meets the Indian Ocean. The resulting currents stir up nutrient-rich water, which along with the tropical climate, nurtures magnificent coral reefs and unparalleled marine life. Guests are able to scuba dive and snorkel daily as well as explore the hidden jungle caves of Tolomol, kayak through giant sea caverns and visit a pearl farm. Amanikan, Aman’s 32 metre Phinisi offers three spacious cabins with contemporary facilities,is also available for the ten day Spice Island Expedition in 2017. With activities abound both on land and beneath the waves, this adventure of a lifetime allows guests to experience a part of the world completely untouched by time. www.aman.com

We should all know by now how amazing Melbourne is right? But can a visit to Melbourne be crammed into 48 hours? Providing your itinerary includes outstanding dining and night life, local culture, diverse shopping and an open mind, you’re on a winner. My tip – stay within the vicinity of Melbourne city and surrounding neighbourhoods and experience all that these areas have to offer.

DAY 1 | FRIDAY

12pm: Spread your wings

Depart Townsville at 8.45pm on the direct Jetstar flight to Melbourne. After the 3 hour journey, catch a cab to the newly opened QT Melbourne. QT, located at Russell Street, will leave you speechless with its industrial chic design with a modern edge. Go for a night cap at Hot Sauce – a rocking laneway bar attached to the hotel.

After shopping until you have dropped, head to Wings of Glory in South Melbourne, serving authentic American style chicken buffalo wings and beer with a local Australian twist. The American and Canadian regulars swear by it. Not into eating food with your fingers, no problem, boneless wings are also available, as are vegetarian style wings if that is your preference. Be sure to also try the hand cut Aussie home grown potatoes, sliced and crisped to perfection. Spend the remainder of the afternoon exploring the city.

8.45pm: Depart Townsville to Melbourne + Settle in

DAY 2 | SATURDAY 9am: Breakfast on the go + Retail therapy Grab a coffee and sandwich on the go from The League of Honest Coffee, specialising in international coffee. Try the Ethiopian or Kenyan blend and if you really need a caffeine hit, ask for the double ristretto. Then begin your shopping spree. Try places such as Emporium Melbourne or Melbourne Central, both within walking distance and with many retail shop selections.

Image: Tourism Victoria

6pm: The Lucy Express + A night out at the theatre Conveniently located close to QT on Oliver Lane, Lucy Liu’s is the ideal venue for a pre theatre meal. Lucy Liu’s serves up Asian fusion delicacies and for a quick option, go for The Lucy Express – something cold, something hot, something steamed, something wokked. A five-minute walk will have you arriving at the heritage listed Regent Theatre, having >

housed many successful musicals over the years. See ‘We Will Rock You’, created around the big hit songs of Queen. The show will have you feeling elated and ready for a big night out. My recommendation – best to pre book your tickets so you don’t miss out.

11pm: Hit the iconic laneway bars Melbourne is renowned for its laneway bars. And one that is a local favourite is Eau De Vie, situated at Malthouse Lane. Hang out at the main bar, home to 700 plus spirits where you can order your favourite drink, including endless cocktails. Or try out the whiskey room, secretively hidden behind a fake book case. Sample the Ron Zacapa Blazer, listed as one of the world’s top ten cocktails in 2013 by Elite Traveller. Made with Ron Zacapa rum and flamed with Pedro Ximenez sherry and a dash of bitters, it will leave you feeling all warm and fuzzy.

DAY 3 | SUNDAY 10am: Recharge and relax After a much needed sleep in, take a relaxing stroll through the city with a take away coffee in hand. Check out the city’s local landmarks along the way, such as Fed Square (as the locals call it), Parliament House and Rialto and Eureka Towers. For a small fee, you can even hire a bike located at a number of street corners and the machines accept credit cards – very handy indeed.

12pm: Take a tram to Brother Burger Melbourne has gone mad for burgers! Who would have guessed? For one of the best burgers in town, try out Brother Burger & The Marvellous Brew at either Brunswick Street or Chapel Street. Everything from the sauces, pickles and buns are hand-made and the 100% wagyu beef patties are divine, plus there are other burger choices if wagyu isn’t for you. Order ‘The Fun Guy’ coupled with a famous alcoholic milkshake, aka, a shake-a-holic, to wash it all down. There’s also an extensive selection of beers on the menu.

3pm: Depart QT to airport Depart QT at 3pm to allow plenty of time for your 4pm check in. Board your Jetstar flight for your 5.15pm departure. Arrive into Townsville at 8.15pm and start planning your next Melbourne weekend fling!

that suits them. My clients really enjoy and appreciate this style of consultation as it means they have my undivided attention without any interruption, in an environment they feel comfortable with. The first consultation with a client normally means getting to know them. Exploring what their wants, needs and interests are, allows me to determine the best holiday suited to them. I am able to do this with my 20 years’ travel industry experience and having travelled extensively for 20 years.

A Day In The Life Of Personal Travel Manager Maria Pandalai 6.00am: Rise and shine + Parental duties Alarm, what alarm? My 2 year old son, Krishnan and 4 year old daughter, Maya, are my alarms. After waking up with a strong coffee, my husband and I get our children ready for kindy.

8.00am: Exercise to clear the mind Exercise is vital for my wellbeing and keeping fit. Going for a morning run or hitting the gym allows me to mentally prepare for my work day ahead and clears my mind for the challenges that may be faced during the day.

9.00am: Commence work

Maria Pandalai Personal Travel Manager | Townsville TravelManagers Australia 0407 122 120 maria.pandalai@travelmanagers.com.au www.travelmanagers.com.au/MariaPandalai

I normally start my work day by responding to overnight emails. I follow up travel proposals that I have provided to clients. I allocate time for marketing initiatives. And then I get stuck into it! Multi-tasking by working on various bookings, answering phone calls and responding to emails is how it normally goes. Working as a Personal Travel Manager for TravelManagers Australia means I’m selfemployed and operating my own business from home, with the support of Australia’s largest home-based and most experienced travel network behind me. This works really well with balancing my work and family life.

11.00am: Appointment with a client at a café As a mobile travel consultant, I have the flexibility to meet my clients at a time and place

It’s important to also explain that I offer an after-hours emergency assistance service, which gives my clients peace of mind before they depart and also during their holiday. If required, I meet with my clients again during the booking process and also correspond via email and phone. About a month prior to departure, I meet my clients again to provide their travel documents and explain their booking thoroughly to ensure they are happy and confident with their holiday particulars.

1.00pm: Quotes, bookings and mid-afternoon coffee hit One minute I’m working on a Mediterranean cruise booking, and then the next, a tour of South America. The destinations and type of holidays I arrange are diverse and I enjoy this as it keeps things exciting and interesting. My services include aspects such as flight bookings, accommodation bookings, group tours, sightseeing, transfers, visas, cruises, car hire and more. I often get asked what the role of a personal travel manager is. Think of a Personal Travel Manager the way you’d think of your personal trainer or financial planner. And whether my clients are travelling for business or for fun, I work closely to create a tailor-made trip that’s as individual as they are. In most scenarios I offer the same, if not, better than internet prices.

5.00pm: Dedicated family time Spending time with my family is very precious to me. I often take my children out after kindy to the playground, for an ice-cream or to simply see their grandparents. Then it’s dinner, some activities, reading a book and bed time for my children.

8.00pm: Catch up If I have work to catch up on from during the day, I will do so at night when it’s quiet. And then rest, relaxation and preparing for what the next day may propose. Every day is a new day as they say!

From a fledgling to a thriving market, and now a shop as well, the popularity of the Renegade Handmade concept continues to snowball.

A PROFESSIONAL potter for the better part of 20 years, Karissa Chase has been selling at markets for a long time. So when she returned to Townsville with her husband Tom, after moving to America for love, it seemed only natural to start a market catering for local creatives like herself. “At the time, in Townsville it was quite an out-of-the-box idea for an individual to start a market,” Karissa says. “We began in April of 2013 with an excited but modest 16 stalls. We now house 70 to 80 makers each month. I knew I had the drive to make it work, so I just put one foot in front of the other and everything has fallen into place from there.” Investing 100 per cent of the vendor fees back into the evolution of the Renegade Handmade Market has paid off. The market has now grown so large

it’s had to move out of its original home at the Aitkenvale State School to the Marian Catholic School in Currajong. On the second Sunday of each month, from 8am till 1pm, the school comes to life as those looking for handmade bargains scour the sports hall filled with stalls. To further satisfy the growing demand for locally made masterpieces, Karissa opened the Renegade Gift Shop in April of 2014. You may have seen it opposite Otto’s Fresh Food Market, behind the Warrina Cinemas. “I often hear people coming through the door telling their friends that everything in the store is Australian made,” Karissa says. “When they ask what’s local we’re proud to say that two-thirds of our items are made right here in Townsville. “We also carry a funky range of well-

known makers from across Australia including Emily Green, Tiff, Nanna Woo, Studio Cockatoo, Connie Lichti and Blossom and Cat.” Those hunting for eye-catching originals will be delighted to discover everything from handmade clothing and jewellery to stained glass creations, pottery and artwork at the Renegade Gift Shop. “I love what’s opened up for me since moving back to Townsville,” Karissa says. “I feel so full of gratitude to be helping people live their best creative life in a meaningful and also financially viable way.” Renegade Gift Shop 3 Illuka Street, Currajong 0477 900 222 hello@morethanamarket.com.au www.morethanamarket.com.au

Christine Pulvirenti About me: I am a musician and have been teaching and playing for most of my life. I spent most of my childhood in Ingham growing up on a sugar cane farm and at Forrest Beach, and most of my schooling at boarding school in Charters Towers and Brisbane. I had a fantastic year in California following Grade 12 as an AFS Exchange student before returning to Ingham. At this time I made the fortuitous decision to start a music studio there and soon after married my husband Joe – almost 45 years ago. We have two amazing and wonderful daughters both of whom are married and live here in Townsville so we get to see them and their families often. As I come from a large and boisterous family of eight, I’m a very devoted and dedicated mother and ‘Nonna’. BAG Mimco large green tote. A gift from one of my daughters. Love the colour and size as it fits several music books in it. BOOK MARK A most special gift from my beautiful granddaughter, Isabella, who made it in front of me at this year’s grandparent’s day at her school. It has a group photo of both sets of grandparents on the back. SHELLS I love shells and anything to do with the sea as I spent many years living at Forrest Beach near Ingham as a child. Being on a beach is my favourite ‘down time’. JEWELLERY BOX with a plastic baby turtle on it which belongs to my gorgeous grandson, Zachary who is always putting little things in little containers and hiding them. He loves collecting ‘stuff’ like me. PEN Gift from a close friend and fabulous musician. She often gives me one of her ‘inscribed’ pens and a bottle of bubbly for playing piano for her students. BADGE I am a professional member of the Queensland Music Teachers Association and the current president of the Townsville branch and this is the badge that I have for conferences etc. VERSACE SUNGLASSES Gift from ages ago for my birthday by my two caring and wonderful daughters. CHANEL bright red lipstick from a student who knew just what to buy me as I always wear really red lipstick! A SMALL BOOK OF “GRACE” From a dear friend who shares many similar philosophical ideas about life and the human condition. VINTAGE Oroton change purse from Hobart’s Salamanca Place. WALLET A gift from my daughters – they have great taste and I love everything that they buy me.

SMALL CHANEL toiletry bag to keep must have lipstick and compact. DIARY I cannot leave the house without this, as life is chaotic enough at times. AUSTRALIAN DESIGNER BROOCH given to me when my term ended on the Australia Council for the Arts, 2001– 2005. I was the Chair of the Multi-cultural Advisory Board. It was an amazing experience and one of the highlights of my career. ROSARY BEADS + CASE I bought these for my mother in Rome in 1984 – they were blessed by the Pope in an outdoor ceremony at the Vatican. She gave them back to me just before she died in 1995. AMERICAN CLASS OF ’70 RING I was an AFS exchange student in California in 1969–70. All Seniors in the US have a class ring. GOLD EARRINGS My first wedding anniversary gift from my husband. They are now nearly 45 years old so they are vintage also but I wear them often. COMPACT Must have this with me always – just to check if the red lipstick is in the correct place as I have been known to be quite creative with the application. PERFUME This is like a list of gift giving but it is all true. The same as the lipstick story. Another student said I always have lots of perfume on so it was easy to buy me something. ITALIAN GOLD BRACELET This was a gift from my father who went back to Italy in 1967 to see his brothers and sisters whom he had not seen since 1923 – when he emigrated to North Queensland. He and my mother raised eight children and I have been told often by my siblings that I was absolutely incorrigible and hyperactive and a total tomboy.

Love At First Sight Thanks to the most beautiful diamond ring she’d ever laid eyes on (and a Category 5 cyclone), Lauren Shepherd was nearly ‘swept off her feet’ by her partner’s proposal.

THE plan was to kayak across to a small island near their Vanuatu resort to pop the question, but Mother Nature had other ideas for Nathan Shepherd and his wife-to-be. “We were greeted by a Category 5 cyclone so I had to go to plan B — make Lauren walk out to the end of a jetty in gale-force winds to film ’the view’,” Nathan says. “She wasn’t impressed. But that changed when she turned around and saw me on one knee.” In his favour, Nathan had a Kim Bartlett Master Jewellers-designed engagement ring in his pocket. A stunning white gold ring with a sparkling pear diamond at its centre, surrounded by a halo of diamonds, its

exquisite workmanship put a huge smile on Lauren’s face. “I took a photo of a ring I thought would complement Lauren into Jay at Kim Bartlett Master Jewellers and, after I answered a few questions, he designed a 3D model of the ring,” Nathan says. “I was very happy with Jay’s design, I didn’t have any changes. He was extremely knowledgeable, helpful and easy to get along with.” Nathan and Lauren met when they were both working at the Casino. Nathan is a mechanical engineer who is now working as a project manager while Lauren is a financial controller and runs Business In Heels Townsville with her close friend, Sarah Mathiesen. “To be honest, I wasn’t sure about

Nathan when we first met. He was a bit of a ladies’ man so I certainly wasn’t expecting to marry him!,” Lauren laughs. “But here we are almost 10 years later and, well, he’s still the most handsome man I know.” “As for my engagement ring, I love it just as much today as the first time I saw it. It’s everything I hoped for.” To complement the engagement ring, Jay created some elegant designs for the couple to choose from for their wedding bands. “We both wanted something simple and stylish and Jay gave us several options,” Lauren says. “It was definitely one of the easiest parts of wedding preparations.” While they’ve only been married for just over three years, Nathan and Lauren already have two ‘children’ – English Cocker Spaniels Dusk and Lola. “Our girls are our babies,” Lauren says. “Dusk’s favourite thing to do is search high and low for geckos while Lola loves to steal my stockings!” DUOMagazine October 2016

Kimberley Bourke Tell us a little about yourself? I’m a 19 year old Burdekin girl, born and bred. I am currently studying a Bachelor of Education (Primary) at James Cook University in Townsville and am in my second year. I also work part time at the Home Hill swimming pool as a lifeguard and love playing netball and exercising to stay healthy. I enjoy being out in the natural environment and do not mind getting a little dirt under my fingernails. Making time for family is a major priority of mine and I enjoy a good night out with the girls. Describe your style? I would have to say that ‘my style’ incorporates a variety of different styles that don’t all fall under one umbrella. I always seek comfort and tend to be drawn to outfits with a vintage twist. Most treasured item? Silver Witchery watch; it matches with almost any outfit and is a very practical accessory. Labels you like? I do not particularly have a favourite label; I tend to buy what I like despite what the tag says. Best shopping trip? I cannot label any one shopping trip as the best shopping trip. I tend to think of all shopping trips as being great – despite spending too much money! Your style guru? I don’t follow any one style icon, although I really like the comfortable laid back boy-friend jeans with a baggy white shirt look, in conjunction with classic structured formal styles. You’d never be caught wearing…? It is daring to say never; however, I am not a huge fan of animal print or pants where you could see my cheeks (bottom). Wardrobe item you can’t bring yourself to part with and why? Denim shorts, I have a billion pairs. Shoes or dress first? For me, the dress always comes first. Once I have found the dress I can then look for the shoes and accessories to complete the look. Meaningful last words? Back yourself, if you love it… WEAR IT!

Get Your Glow On Glamour means different things to different people, but the one thing we can all agree upon is that glamour means feeling confident in your own skin – literally, your own skin! You can have the best makeup artist in the world but it’s impossible to look fantastic for a night out if your canvas isn’t smooth and prepped. We’ve all been there, where your makeup is all done and looking lovely, but something doesn’t seem ‘right’. Often it’s texture – large open pores, fine lines, deep wrinkles where your foundation gathers. Or maybe it’s dry dull skin which ‘eats’ makeup, leaving a cakey or powdery look. Or, as is often the case in North Queensland, skin might be overly oily which leads to makeup sliding off and looking greasy in photos. And it may even be that facial ageing is contributing to a sagging, tired, flat look. There are several ways to help your skin look fabulous under makeup as we lead into the spring/summer party season; from simple five-minute solutions right

through to in-clinic procedures which can leave you feeling great right away:

Exfoliate: At-home exfoliation is the easiest thing you can do to remove dull, dry surface cells and leave skin feeling softer! We adore Aspect Fruit Enzyme Mask which is gentle enough for all skins.

Incorporate a hydrating serum: Parched skin is never going to look fantastic under makeup. Revitalise those tissues with a hydrating serum. Try Aspect Dr Hyaluronic Serum, which helps to bind 1000 times its own weight in water, deep in your skin!

Book in for a peel: Professional peels are the perfect way to retexturise the surface of the skin and allow for better absorption of treatment ingredients. Our peels are customisable, meaning

we can literally pick, choose and layer the right peel for every skin. All peels at Chrysalis Medispa are finished with a Healite II LED treatment for optimum soothing and healing.

Consider injectables: Used judiciously, injectable fillers can add lift and support to ageing skin and can rejuvenate facial contours which have lost volume over time. Makeup artists will love working with those smooth contours and elegant cheekbones. At Chrysalis Medispa we make it our mission to get you to Glowing and Glamorous, and our team just adore taking the journey with you. Call us on 4779 2886 for a free consult to take your first steps to glamour!

Grant Collins Clarity Hearing Solutions

Single-sided Deafness Several years ago little could be done for single-sided deafness but that’s no longer the case…

I often come across people who have totally lost the hearing in one ear but still have normal hearing in the other ear. This is called singlesided deafness or SSD. Many have been told that there is nothing that can be done and to just live with it and learn to adapt. What many people don’t realise, however, is that it is extremely debilitating to lose the hearing in just the one ear. In a way, it’s worse than losing hearing in both ears. First of all you lose all sense of determining which way a sound is coming from. We rely on volume differences between our ears to localise sound (i.e. a sound coming from the left side is louder in the left ear than the right so we know to look that way). Without the second ear we have no idea which direction sounds come from. Secondly, and probably most importantly, it’s nearly impossible to have a conversation in background noise as you require two ears to function when competing sounds are present. Although several years ago there was little that could be done, we now have a lot more options to assist in alleviating these difficulties. Firstly some SSD patients may well be suitable for a cochlear implant, in which case we can restore the hearing that was lost. In terms of outcomes restoring hearing should provide the most benefit as we are providing balance to the hearing once again. However, until recently, this option was discouraged as it was thought that cochlear implant technology could not reproduce normal hearing accurately enough for the better ear to ever adjust to the sound difference. Thankfully recent advances in implant technology mean that processors are now able to closer match normal hearing. But probably the biggest factor is that our

understanding of the plasticity (adaptiveness) of the brain has now changed and we realise the brain can quickly adapt to changes no matter what age this occurs. The success rate for implanting singlesided deafness is now very high. In fact, all of our SSD patients have had very successful outcomes. Besides cochlear implants there are other alternative devices that can assist, in particular a hearing device called a Bluetooth CROS device. This works by wearing a discreet hearing aid in each ear. The aid in the dead ear, called a transmitter, picks up all of the sounds from the poor side and transfers by a Bluetooth signal to the hearing aid in the good ear, the receiver. Because these devices do not block up the ear, the hearing in the good ear is still being used and it is then supplemented with the hearing aid receiving the information from the dead side. The other advantage of the Bluetooth CROS device is that, because the hearing aid in the better ear is Bluetooth-compatible, you are able to pair it into other devices such as the TV. This will allow the wearer to hear the TV clearly at a level comfortable to them without affecting the volume for others. Another helpful Bluetooth device that can be paired into the hearing aids are Bluetooth lapel microphones. These devices are remote microphones worn in noisy environments or around the house. They pick up the voice of the person wearing the microphone and transmit it up to 20 metres to the hearing aid.

The world’s smallest wireless hearing aid is here! Invisible. Comfortable. Now with Bluetooth. And now at Clarity! Starkey SoundLens IIC, the world’s smallest invisible removable deep canal IIC (InvisibleIn-Canal) hearing aid now comes with Bluetooth. Clarity will custom mould and fit the SoundLens to sit comfortably deep in your ear, so only you know they’re there. Although tiny, the SoundLens Synergy comes loaded with all Call Clarity Hearing Solutions on

Early Orthodontic Assessment

Is Earlier Always Better?

Ideally, children should have an orthodontic assessment at the age of eight. It may surprise you that most children do not benefit from treatment at this tender age. It can be difficult to discern which children will benefit from early orthodontic treatment. What may seem to be a problem is often only a mild variation of normal. Orthodontists have the specialist training to know when it is appropriate to treat, when to wait and when no treatment is required. Orthodontists usually advise that treatment is not necessary or beneficial for young children, however, they are very prepared to provide early treatment when it is appropriate. Only 10% of children under the age of 10 will truly benefit from early orthodontic treatment. For this minority, appropriate treatment can prevent damage to the front teeth and gums, prevent teeth wearing down and reduce emotional distress if teasing is occurring at school.

AS parents, we all want the best for our children. The Internet provides easy access to information, but it can be a double-edged sword. While it can improve awareness, it leaves the reader vulnerable to misleading information and half-truths. Health professionals must stay up-to-date with current knowledge and provide evidencebased treatment. Our children should be protected from unnecessary treatment. Do most children actually ‘need’ early orthodontic treatment?

The best evidence shows that most orthodontic problems are genetic in nature. Facial shapes, jaw and teeth size are primarily genetic. Therefore, we usually look like our parents and siblings and this is why true prevention of crooked teeth and significant bite problems is generally not possible. Having perfectly straight teeth is uncommon without customised orthodontic alignment (e.g. braces or clear aligners) as teenagers or adults. Those promoting early treatment for young children say that teeth can be ‘guided’ into better positions, using plates or pre-formed double-mouthguard, tooth-guidance or myofunctional appliances. Their mantra is that ‘earlier is always better’. Despite their claims,

Orthodontist

Dr Desmond Ong Townsville Orthodontic Specialists

Myth-busting: Early Orthodontic Treatment

Early Orthodontic Treatment

scientific studies, clearly show that only small changes result. Most changes are 2mm or less, which for most patients, will not fix all of their problems. The vast majority of these early treatment patients still require braces later to achieve an acceptable outcome. Unwarranted early treatment is generally more expensive, increases treatment time (often taking years, which ‘wears the child out’) and may even lead to poorer outcomes. The current best evidence shows that routine early treatment does not predictably reduce treatment complexity, does not reduce the need for extraction of teeth and does not significantly change facial growth or breathing patterns. In essence, early treatment is rarely the best treatment. Therefore why subject your child to unnecessary early treatment? Just because something can be done does not mean it should be done! Recent best research shows that most orthodontic treatment is best provided when all of the permanent teeth have come through (e.g. ages 11–14). Waiting for the right time allows the treatment to be done right the first time. In light of this, we must outline for our patients all of their options, treat at the right time and avoid unnecessary financial expense.

What is an Orthodontist? An Orthodontist is a registered specialist with both a dental degree and specialist degree (eight years of full-time university). Orthodontists are the most qualified and experienced clinicians who can manage all tooth and jaw alignment problems. Orthodontists can determine the best time to treat a specific orthodontic problem, whether it be as a child, teenager or adult. *References available upon request

The Beauty Of Self-Acceptance “To be beautiful means to be yourself. You don’t need to be accepted by others. You need to accept yourself.” Thich Nhat Hanh SELF-ACCEPTANCE or embracing who you are is crucial to peace of mind and happiness. But loving yourself all the time is a challenge. It’s easy to find fault with yourself and believe the inner critic that you’ll never measure up or be ‘good enough’. It’s the voice that berates you for not being better than you actually are.

No one wants to doubt themselves but selfacceptance can be fleeting. Quiet confidence on a good day is easy, but on a day when you’ve made a mistake or two, don’t like how you look or feel miserable, the way you see yourself can shift toward the unhelpful. So why is it so common to struggle with self-acceptance? There are many reasons. Parents or caregivers may have dealt with you in childhood with hurtful and critical messages rather than with love and acceptance. Or maybe you experienced abuse, disapproval, or bullying at home, in school or online. Or maybe unrealistic messages from the media have had an impact. The consequence of such experiences is that they can lead to painful feelings of inadequacy. We know negative self-talk is counter intuitive to success but how can we switch the dial from those messages? Self-acceptance is something that can be nurtured and strengthened with the right techniques. The messages you give yourself are like tuning into a radio. At any time, there are stations playing relaxed, loving messages and others are critical. The good news is that you can choose what you listen to. Even the negative messages can be turned from unhelpful static into easier, positive listening. Notice the impact of the following critical messages and consider how differently they sound when adjusted. “I am not a good enough mother” can become “What’s the best I can do for my kids today?” “I’m lazy and don’t have the energy to exercise” can become “I can build up my fitness by going for a short walk.”

Clinical psychologists are specially trained in cognitive behaviour techniques (CBT) that identify unhelpful thoughts and give you the skills to reframe them into more realistic, selfaccepting statements. Think of self-acceptance as a skill that takes practice rather than a trait that you do or don’t possess. Learning how to embrace your true self – the good, the bad and the quirky – is not about complacency or giving up hopes of self-improvement but focusing on what you can control and setting realistic goals. Want to feel good about yourself? Here are a few tips to get you started. Quiet your inner critic. Notice when you’re sending yourself mean messages and try turning your ‘radio dial’ to a more loving frequency. Create a realistic mantra such as, “I am only human and I am doing the best that I can.” Celebrate your strengths. Write a list of your strengths and achievements, including any hardships you’ve overcome. Forgive yourself. Past regrets can prevent you from practicing self-acceptance. Forgive yourself, let go of any shame or humiliation, accept that you can’t change the past and move on. The key to self-compassion is accepting that your mistakes and imperfections are simply reminders that you are human. Do you struggle with letting go of the past? Do you want to feel good about yourself? A clinical psychologist can guide you toward self-acceptance for life.

Cancer Council is calling on Queenslanders to get the girls together this month in support of the 11 women who are diagnosed with a breast or gynaecological cancer every day.

Female Friendships Drive Fight Against Women’s Cancers

CANCER Council’s Girls’ Night In draws on the power and impact of female friendships to raise vital funds and awareness for all women’s cancers. Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift said from pyjama parties to pot luck dinners, bake offs and movie nights – every Queenslander could get involved. “Women have never needed an excuse to get together, but if ever there was one – Girls’ Night In is it!” Ms Clift said. “Girls’ Night In events can be as big or small as you would like – we’re expecting about 3000 pamper parties, clothes swaps, cooking nights or games nights this year in Queensland alone. “Spend a night in with your girlfriends and donate what you would have spent on a night out to Cancer Council Queensland. “All funds raised will be invested in vital cancer research, patient support services and prevention programs for women affected by breast and gynaecological cancers.” One in six Queensland women will be

diagnosed with a women’s cancer in their lifetime – around 4000 women this year alone. Around 3000 Queensland women are diagnosed with breast cancer annually, and about 1000 are diagnosed with an ovarian, cervical, vaginal, vulva or uterine cancer. “Girls’ Night In is also an opportunity for women to get together and talk about their health,” Ms Clift said. “From sharing healthy recipes to fitness tips, checking up on cancer screening and sharing personal stories – we want women to connect over their health and wellbeing this month. “Girls’ Night In is as much about raising awareness of your health as it is about raising funds.” Cancer Council Girls’ Night In aims to raise $1.4 million through 3000 hosts in Queensland in 2016. Not Feeling So Glamorous

IT’S been quite a few years now since I first took notice of an interesting phenomenon that was occurring in the patient population I was seeing while I worked in the medical imaging industry. Patients were attending repeatedly for chronic injuries that were never getting better. Sometimes I’d see the same patient over a seven year period for the same injury. Sometimes these started as an acute injury but many times there was no incident at all. The patient would

say the pain started ‘out of the blue’ or from performing a minor task like, oh... how about sleeping! Many times these injuries are explained away as ‘surely you must have done something you don’t remember’ or repetitive strain injury. I really love that concept because it begs the question; ‘Why do some workers performing the same task suffer RSI while others do not?’ Patients would say “I feel like I’m falling apart” and, in my nutrition practice, clients would say the same thing. Yet the answer applied in the conventional world of health is very different from the functional world. So let’s explore this concept. Let’s look at a common scenario – the shoulder (knee, wrist, ankle, elbow: pick your favourite joint or combination) injury. A patient presents, with say, unexplained pain. Often anti-inflammatories are administered and either a ‘wait and see’ approach is applied or imaging is recommended perhaps X-ray, hopefully ultrasound, maybe MRI. A common diagnosis might be bursitis, tendinosis or a tear. The typical treatment scenario is pain management (medication), rest, strapping, physiotherapy. If it’s ongoing then maybe a cortisone injection. Once, twice, three times, sometimes more. Maybe eventually a surgical opinion is considered. Sound familiar? But how often is the rest of the body investigated for unexplained and chronic joint pain? Here are my top 5 questions worth asking: 1. Are you experiencing pain or weakness in any other joints/muscles? 2. What other health conditions are you living with? And not just the big ones, the little ones

like poor sleep, snoring, reflux, bloating, chronic skin conditions? 3. Do you have digestive issues? 4. Do you have hormonal issues – low testosterone, prostate issues, symptomatic periods or menopause? 5. Do you wake up unrefreshed, achy and sore? Why? Because nothing happens individually in the body. Everything is interconnected and if your body is constantly dealing with something like chronic underlying inflammation this eventually leads us to body breakdown. It certainly doesn’t allow the body the time or resources to heal. We call these underlying stressors and sometimes the cause of a peripheral issue like ankle pain can be completely at another part of the body. Like the gut. But, if all we do is focus on the collateral damage rather than the root cause, we wind up chasing patch job after patch job. And don’t kid yourself. Over time the patch jobs required throughout the body accumulate. Pain is never fun. I get that. But it is our body’s warning system, telling us that if we do not stop and listen to this signal, more and bigger issues are on the way. So, the next time you head back for your next patch job, think about what else might be happening within you that could be creating your pain and try a different perspective. You might be surprised at what you discover and what you are capable of healing on your own.

ADVERTORIAL

Teeth for life We all want to keep a healthy full smile for life. Who doesn’t relish the idea of confidently eating our favourite foods and not having to find excuses to hide our smile? Unfortunately, life is a journey, with a few too many good times, accidents and distractions. It happens, and teeth can be lost, even with the best intentions of you and your dentist. You’re not alone, a majority of adults are missing at least one tooth! Where does that leave you? Will you miss your tooth? Apart from the obvious aesthetic drawbacks to missing a tooth, it can have further consequences. With tooth loss comes another problem, loss of bone. The bone around teeth require regular stimulation to stay healthy and without such stimulation caused by the teeth, the bone slowly retreats, as much as 25% in a year. If enough teeth are lost, the ability to chew and speak can be worsened, and the facial contours change. Your other teeth can now drift into the space, causing further issues with teeth alignment, food packs and gum problems. The development and evolution of dental implants has given dentists the ability to

What can dental implants be used for? • Supporting loose dentures • Replacing single lost teeth, both front and back • Replacing multiple teeth, from 2 side by side to your entire smile!

restore function and aesthetics of your smile like never before. There are many ways to replace a tooth, from dentures to dental bridges, but in many situations, dental implants provide the solution most similar to a natural tooth. The dental implant consists of two main components. A titanium implant or implants are placed in your jawbone during a surgical procedure. The replacement tooth or teeth are then connected to the implants. Whether this is a single crown, a bridge or an implant supported denture. This process can sometimes be completed in a single appointment, but generally is spread out over a period of four to six months to allow the implant to integrate with your jaw and maximise a successful outcome.

Generation Spokesperson

Courtney Frank DUOMagazine

Battle Of The Body Image One of the biggest issues that plagues my generation is body image. And it’s something that most of us struggle with on a daily basis.

MY generation is growing up in a society that places an extreme amount of importance on body image. Of the many definitions online, one states that ‘body image is how we feel and think about our bodies and often has no bearing whatsoever on our actual appearance.’ Amongst Generation Y, unhappiness with our body image has almost become the norm. We have a tendency to judge people based on their appearance, we compare ourselves to others, media and fashion industries promote an ‘ideal’ body type that is often unrealistic and unattainable and social media has basically become our ‘bible’ on how to look better, dress nicer and be thinner. According to research by the Victorian Government, only one in five women are satisfied with their body weight and almost half of normal weight women believe they are larger than they actually are. On top of this, some girls as young as ten years old are dangerously obsessed with how they look. The problem is, statistics like this should shock me, but they don’t. It doesn’t sound out

98

DUOMagazine October 2016

of the ordinary to me and that’s because I’ve grown up in a media dominated society that’s consumed by image. And if I think about it, that’s pretty scary. As children, we grew up with dolls and figurines with bodies that are near impossible to replicate. As we moved into primary school, we became self-conscious about the clothes we wore, our haircuts, our skin, and whether or not we should start wearing makeup. In high school, we forced our classmates into factions and friendship groups that were based on the equation pretty = popular. Then as we got older, we became more aware of the media and how tabloid magazines and billboards advertise ways to become ultra thin and ultra sexy (and preferably with a thigh gap and a straight nose). I’m not saying this is the case for every single man or woman in Generation Y, but unfortunately, for the majority it is. And let’s not forget about the rise of social media and the impact this has on body image. It just might be the most damaging platform of them all. These days, if you open your Instagram feed, you’ll be flooded with pictures of women and men, all with the perfect clothes, perfect hair and makeup, perfect homes, perfect families and perfectly tanned skin. And whilst most of us know better than to compare ourselves with these images, over time they still make an impact. And if the images alone aren’t enough, then there’s the hashtags: #goals #fitspo #thinspiration just to name a few. And this is where it starts to get a bit too much for me. I know that I’m strong enough to stomach the media and the fashion magazines, but the hashtags… That’s where I draw the line. Yep, body image is probably the mother of all Gen Y trends out there. We’re consumed by how others perceive us, but also by how we perceive ourselves. And we’re all so guilty of it. Am I the biggest advocator of positive body image? Absolutely not. Just like every

other Gen Y girl out there, I struggle with self esteem and body image on a daily basis. But working in the media has certainly helped me develop a resistance because I’m right in the thick of it. I know what’s true and what isn’t. I can tell the difference between an image that’s been Photoshopped and one that hasn’t. And I think the majority of my generation is acutely aware of the ways media outlets perpetuate unsustainable body images too. But if the rational part of our brain knows that images in the media are edited and distorted, then why does the irrational part of us still desperately try to emulate and achieve the same results? We simply can’t help it. And if the media has warped our ideas of body image, how can we overcome this? By learning to understand the difference between real and not real in the media. Being media savvy means that we can develop new skills to resist the pressures of the media, make informed choices about the kind of media we consume and in turn, stop being so negatively affected by everything we see in the media. Ultimately, technology is never going to disappear, its only going to keep advancing. Tina Fey once said, “retouching is here to stay, technology doesn’t move backward. No society has ever de-industrialised.” By understanding the media, we can take some of the power back. We can turn around and say “screw you society, I’m not listening to you!” We can learn to accept our body, flaws and all and strive to live a healthy life without worrying about criticism and conformity. One persons idea of beauty isn’t going to be the same as the next persons. We can stop spending our time trying to reach unrealistic ideals of beauty and instead focus on being happy, healthy and fit – no matter what that looks like to others.

We Really Can’t Do it All We can’t keep juggling a million balls every single day. Eventually some will drop and that is perfectly okay.

ANOTHER year is quickly coming toward the end. Like most people, I can’t believe it’s October already. It’s a time when we start looking back on all the events and activities of the year and it’s no wonder we are so tired. At this time of the year I always reflect on how well I think I have handled the past 10–12 months. I have learnt over the past few years that I really struggle with understanding my limits and I know I’m not alone there. I look back at my early years and in particular my time before children, and I have no idea what I did with all that spare time. In the past I have become really annoyed with myself that I obviously didn’t make better use of that time. I’m really hoping that’s the old me though, as I’m starting to think that version of myself had the right idea. Now, I’m starting to realise that I was much smarter back then. I thought less of what I should be doing and more of what I needed to be doing. I was certainly more in tune with myself and I gave myself permission to do a lot of things that I certainly don’t now. I allowed myself time to just do nothing or simply enjoy what was happening around me. I know I am not alone in this. Most people reading this column would be shaking their heads in agreement and remembering those earlier times in their life when they gave themselves the freedom to do very different things. Somewhere along the way we started listening very intently to a voice that wasn’t our own. We started listening to the voice in society that dictated what it meant to be a good mother/father, friend, partner, sister, brother, etc. Wow, that voice leads us astray sometimes. It’s a voice that gets too caught up in what’s

Catholic Diocese of Townsville

Office for Life, Marriage and Family

really not that important. It’s a voice that forgets that often the simplest moments are the most precious. It’s a voice that puts a huge amount of importance on running around, all the time. At some point we need to take back control of our life. We need to stop thinking about the future and what will make it better and just enjoy right now. We need to stop worrying about what other people will think if we say ‘no’ every once in a while or if we can’t do everything that is expected of us. Sometimes I think we all suffer to differing degrees from Chicken Little syndrome. I used to love that story as a child and I often wondered how Chicken Little could possibly think that the sky was falling in. Fast forward to our life now as an adult and I think that’s the worry that lies beneath a lot of our decision making. Subconsciously we truly do believe that the sky will fall if we can’t do everything and be everywhere. We need to stop being Chicken Little and realise that our world will not fall if we stop to take a breath and smell the roses every once in a while. We don’t have to be everything to everyone. We can just be ourselves; perfectly imperfect at times.

Here To Help The Townsville Hospital Foundation strives to give the gift of hope, innovation and inspiration to those who find themselves at the Townsville Hospital.

Registered nurse Helena McInnes and Townsville Hospital clinical director of neonatalogy Professor Guan Koh with new mum Kristie Matthews and her daughter Nicarri, who was born prematurely at 25 weeks.

THE Townsville Hospital Foundation works in consultation with Townsville Hospital patients, families, visitors and staff to ensure assistance – be it financial, emotional or educational – is concentrated in a timely manner and where there is greatest need. The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is a place of high emotion and high pressure, and the Townsville Hospital Foundation has supported a number of programs and initiatives over the past 27 years, assisting families and staff in this delicate and resilient unit. One such program was the recent Family Integrated Care (FICare) trial. The trial looked at how NICU staff could educate and empower parents and family members during their baby’s stay at hospital and well after they return home. The transition from NICU to the family home can be extremely daunting, as some families are required to stay in NICU for several months after their baby

100

is born prematurely. Townsville Hospital neonatal unit registered nurse Helena McInnes says there were many great things about the FICare program. “The most outstanding result of the FICare program for me was the confidence in the parents when they left the hospital,” she says. “Instead of making excuses about why they weren’t ready to go home yet, they walked out with a smile and ‘we can do this’ attitude.” Townsville Hospital clinical director of neonatalogy Professor Guan Koh believes in a holistic family approach in caring for babies and reiterates the importance of parents feeling educated and empowered. “Under the FICare model paradigm the focus is on the family becoming active participants in their baby’s care,” he says. It’s this type of empowerment that’s rewarding not only for the families but for medical staff too. “We run education

sessions covering topics on what to expect as pre-term babies develop to physiotherapy techniques, and pharmacy information so parents can understand what medication their babies are on and how this medication works,” Helena says. Townsville Hospital Foundation General Manager Judy Higgins says she loves seeing the benefits of programs such as FICare and knows these special initiatives make a real difference and positive change to the lives of the participants. “Anytime a family or parent is required to spend time up in NICU with their newborn baby, it comes with much emotion and at times an overwhelming amount of information,” she says. “The Foundation supported the FICare program as we saw a real need for new parents to feel supported and equipped with the information they needed to progress through this difficult time in their lives. It is heart-warming when families bring their growing, healthy babies back to the hospital to visit and to say thank you.” Dr Koh has witnessed first-hand the important work of the Townsville Hospital Foundation through programs such as FICare. “I’m the Townsville Hospital Foundation’s number one fan with part of my pay automatically deducted as a donation to the Foundation under their Salary Saints program,” he says. “I encourage everyone in the Townsville community to get on board and do their part by donating in this way.” For more information on how to become a Salary Saint or how to donate to the Townsville Hospital Foundation, visit www.thfoundation.org.au or facebook. com/TownsvilleHospitalFoundation

Stephanie Dresses Up For ICU Shift Townsville Hospital principle house officer Dr Stephanie Moore is no stranger to helping people; working in the hospital’s intensive care unit (ICU), she treats some of the regions’ sickest patients and this month, she’ll be doing so while simultaneously helping young girls halfway across the world.

Dr Stephanie Moore

DR MOORE is taking part in the annual ‘Do It in a Dress’ campaign, donning a school dress for one of her ICU shifts to help raise money to send girls in Africa to school. Dr Moore said she saw the campaign as a simple way to make a big difference to a young girl’s life. “Around 60 million girls globally are denied an education, simply because they are girls,” she said. “I believe that every girl should get the chance to be her best. I want to help as many girls as possible who haven’t had a chance to be educated simply because of their sex.”

Dr Moore said as a woman, the campaign resonated with her. “I work in an industry that was historically dominated by men; however, over the past few decades there has been a huge shift with male and female graduates now around a 50/50 split,” she said. “I am so grateful to live in a country that values education, regardless of gender, and I want to play a role in bringing that equality and opportunity to other parts of the world.” Dr Moore said the team at The Townsville Hospital’s intensive care unit had been extremely supportive of her crusade. “I have had a huge amount of support from my colleagues in the intensive care unit and also in other areas of the hospital with lots of generous donations,” she said. “So far I am up to around $6,500, that’s 21 girls educated for an entire year, but I’d love to get that even higher to help as many girls as possible.” Dr Moore said in addition to the much-needed funds, a doctor wearing a school dress in a clinical environment helped

start an important conversation. “A lot of people aren’t aware of the extent that girls can be disadvantaged in other parts of the world,” Dr Moore said. “Less than 25 per cent of girls in Uganda get the chance to finish primary school and up to 50 per cent of girls in Uganda and Sierra Leone are forced into marriage before they’re 18. “Educating girls has also been shown to have a huge flow-on effect for the whole community. Educating a girl improves the local economy more than any other type of investment. “When people ask why I’m wearing a school dress it gives me an opportunity to educate and raise awareness about this important issue. Awareness can be the first step towards making a genuine, life altering change for these girls.” Dr Moore invites you to participate in this important campaign by donating at www.doitinadress.com/stephaniemoore

“I AM SO GRATEFUL TO LIVE IN A COUNTRY THAT VALUES EDUCATION, REGARDLESS OF GENDER, AND I WANT TO PLAY A ROLE IN BRINGING THAT EQUALITY AND OPPORTUNITY TO OTHER PARTS OF THE WORLD.” DR STEPHANIE MOORE

BRENT + LYNDSEY GORISS 5 STAR FITNESS TOWNSVILLE

F I T FOR WOR K With each having their own interest in fitness, this husband-wife team left their respective jobs to focus on a budding family business.

5 STAR FITNESS TOWNSVILLE FACEBOOK/INSTAGRAM: 5 STAR FITNESS TOWNSVILLE

With a career spanning 17 years, Exercise Physiologist and Strength and Conditioning Coach Brent Goriss knows his stuff. He’s worked with TAFE Queensland, Townsville Crocodiles, The Queensland Academy of Sport and the Australian Women’s Cricket Team, and his knowledge of health and fitness inevitably rubbed off on wife Lyndsey. When the two met in 2006 Lyndsey was working in marketing, then after welcoming the couple’s daughter Willow in late 2008, Lyndsey felt the need for change. She gained qualification as a personal trainer, and started 5 Star Fitness in 2012, initially as a womenonly circuit class, which boomed overnight. Lyndsey expanded the business to include a 12 Week Challenge, a Mums and Bubs class and Fun Fitness 4 Kidz Townsville delivered

through childcare centres. “Through the whole process, Brent has been my sounding board,” says Lyndsey, whose goal to have Brent on board full-time was realised in January 2016. “Lyndsey had started something that was connecting with people and growing at a rate we hadn’t anticipated so early on,” recalls Brent. “With both of us committed full-time to the business we’ve been able to add more sessions to our 12 Week Challenges and launch an online business offering training programs, nutrition plans and a 6 Week Online Body Blitz package.” “Brent’s added another dimension to the business,” adds Lyndsey. “As an exercise physiologist, his qualification, experience and

knowledge in the industry is next-level. We can now service elite athletes, and clients who need modification due to injury or chronic illness.” 5 Star Fitness has grown to be Townsville’s largest 12 Week Challenge; and Lyndsey was a finalist for the Townsville Chamber of Commerce Young Business Person of the Year 2016. “Lyndsey’s always had strong people skills – and that’s something you just can’t teach,” offers Brent. “We’ve managed to create a positive environment for people to change their lives physically and mentally,” says Lyndsey. “We work well together because we share energy, enthusiasm and a similar work ethic – we need to with 4.30am starts!”

DENNIS DiBARTOLO + MARK TYRELL ALTITUDE WEALTH SOLUTIONS

FROM OLD M AT E S TO WOR KM AT E S After knowing each other for 20 years this finance-savvy duo made the move to a business partnership; they are now determined to redefine the role of ‘financial adviser’.

ALTITUDE WEALTH SOLUTIONS 11 ROSS RIVER ROAD, MYSTERTON WWW.ALTITUDEWS.COM.AU

“Essentially, we are in the business of helping everyday people improve the chances of achieving their financial goals and aspirations,” explains Dennis DiBartolo, founder and co-Director of Altitude Wealth Solutions with business partner Mark Tyrell. “Mark and I first met some 20 years ago when we both worked for Metway Bank,” Dennis recalls. “Over time, our careers took different paths but we remained close friends.” In 2008, Mark returned to Townsville after time away and Dennis began “planting the seed” for Mark to join the financial planning industry. In mid 2014, Mark joined Dennis at Altitude Wealth Solutions initially as an employee, with the intention to buy into the business over time. “The attraction in joining Dennis was to leverage off his extensive financial planning

experience and knowledge built over the past 16 years,” explains Mark. “Part of our strength in working together is that we each know what to expect from the other. Dennis is openminded, honest and pragmatic.” “I’d add that we have similar ethics, and are good sounding boards for each other,” says Dennis. Taking advantage of Mark’s banking background, Altitude Wealth Solutions recently launched Altitude Mortgage Brokering. “It seemed like a natural addition to our service offering, to ensure we are providing holistic advice to our clients,” explains Mark. “Our mortgage advice focuses on clients having the correct borrowing structures in place and ensuring they have the most competitive interest

rates, products and features.” As part of their shared vision for the business, and their industry, Dennis and Mark are working to redefine the idea of a traditional financial planner. “We’re in the early stages of building our Education Centre which will be designed to provide not only financial education but also support in other areas such as health, technology and work/life balance,” reveals Dennis. “We are striving to be unique, expand the role of a financial adviser, and join with other professionals to improve all aspects of our clients’ lives. “Clients are looking for more from their relationship with a financial planner than ever before.”

This year marks 11 years since BOQ Aitkenvale Owner Manager Tony Castrejana purchased the 30-year-old branch. During that time, the ‘big small bank’ has achieved recognition as a consistent top-performing branch within the BOQ network. The reason for this, according to Tony, is that his team is knowledgeable, provide solutions locally and genuinely care for customers. Within that team is his right-hand woman, Lending Manager Rachael Jarvis. “Rachael started at BOQ Aitkenvale as a loan processor nine years ago and has progressed through to Lending Manager,” recalls Tony. “It won’t be long before she will be running the place!“ “Our relationship is built on trust and a

mutual respect,” adds Rachael. “We’ve worked together for nine years, five days per week, eight hours per day – that’s a lot of time together! – so it’s been important to have a strong working relationship. We think along the same lines, about most things,” she says, “and share a ‘can do’ approach in regard to our customers.“ One of many daily successes for Rachael and Tony was a recent proactive example of good old fashion customer service. “A call to an existing customer uncovered a new need for them to purchase additional business equipment,” explains Rachael. “We ended up completing a Business Loan Application, Tony and I worked jointly on the deal to get everything completed to ensure a

very fast turnaround. Bank approval was done within one hour! Needless to say our customer was very happy with the fast response.” “Good, consistent customer service really is our business,” adds Tony. “Our main role is to assist our new and existing customers with finance – home loans, business loans, equipment finance, and personal loans. We work in tandem to ensure we provide a great service experience every time, which often means helping one another out so we meet the standards we set. “At BOQ Aitkenvale, we aim to make it easy,” explains Tony. “If you’re not happy with your bank, shop around, see what’s out there. Changing banks is not as difficult as most people think.”

The business offers a large range of tyres, including Bridgestone because of the brand’s reputation and product performance. Mike and his wife Linda purchased their first store from Bridgestone in 2010, with Michael Jnr leaving his career as an electrician to join the family business in 2011. Since then, the Rogers have expanded to three stores – Garbutt, Deeragun and Fairfield Waters. “People in Townsville just want a good value for money in both product and service,” says

As a team, we work well together because we have similar beliefs in customer service and community support. Being family, we also know each other well enough to make a decision without wasting time, which is good for our customers and good for our business.” “Like any father son partnership, we have our fair share of conflict,” admits Mike. “When you have two personalities that are much the same it’s bound to happen. I’d

liken our working relationship to a football game; occasionally we fumble the ball, we do get frustrated with each other, but we’re a team – we also know what we need to do to win. At the end of the day we can still have a laugh and a beer together.” Mike explains the business is a true family effort. “We have a great bunch of dedicated people working with us and they are extremely important to our business,” he says. “We see them as extended family rather than just employees; they are what make the business.”

CAPELLI HAIR GALLERY 31–45 EYRE STREET, NORTH WARD WWW.CAPELLIHAIRGALLERY.COM.AU

Jodi Wright and Tamara Pedley have a combined 30 years of experience working in and managing hair salons. After 10 years working together, and eight years co-owning and operating Capelli Hair Gallery in North Ward together, the dedicated duo have created a salon that focuses on more than just hair. “When we opened Capelli, our goal was to bring back the ‘experience’,” explains Jodi. With both women busy working mums – Jodi with three children under five years old, and Tamara with three under four – Jodi says they both know how hard it is to find time to make numerous hair and beauty appointments. “Having your hair done should be a relaxing, enjoyable experience, as should getting a massage

or facial, or your nails done – it shouldn’t feel rushed.” In 2014, five years after Capelli had opened its doors, Tamara and Jodi saw the opportunity to expand their business to be the hair and beauty salon they had dreamed of, incorporating hair, beauty, tanning and massage services all in the one location. Delivering the Capelli Hair Gallery experience today is a team of 10 hair stylists, including Tamara and Jodi, and one skilled beauty therapist. “Each member of the Capelli team has at least 10 years’ experience. We pride ourselves on our experience in the industry,” says Jodi, who lists her career highlight as styling hair at Melbourne Fashion Week alongside Tamara.

“Tamara and I are very close, both as business partners and friends,” shares Jodi. “Our strength and skills are quite opposite, so we are complementary. What I lack, Tamara holds great strength in and vice versa.” “We come from different salon backgrounds,” adds Tamara, “so the training and mentoring was different but our separate experiences have brought us together as a stronger team. We bounce off each other really well. And that’s become even more important since we each started families around the same time.” “Having two of us to support the business and staff, in my eyes,” reveals Jodi, “means we have double the passion and double the experience.”

“Dee started out with the intention of only being a sole trader practice but her passion and dedication to what she did, saw it rapidly grow,” adds Peter. “She had started something that was really making a difference. We felt that taking the calculated risk of pitching in together would allow the business to further grow, allowing us to help even more people,” he explains, of the decision to leave a paid job and join EHTS.

“As cliché as it sounds, when you know you know!” explains Danielle Cannard, of going into business with her Hair Cartelle co-owner Aleisha Fuss. “Aleisha and I met while both working at another salon, and quickly realised we had the same values and morals and similar career goals. Six months later we were business partners.” “I have so much respect for Dani,” adds Aleisha. “I’d describe our working relationship as balanced and effective. Dani certainly has a different thought process to me, which is part of our strength as a team. She also keeps up with my drive to success and can handle how headstrong I am sometimes!” “When Aleisha puts her mind to something she does it, and does it well,” tells Danielle.

“She gives good advice to people who are losing motivation and direction so she is a very good teacher. She’s also quite business savvy.” Using their creativity not only in styling, cutting and colouring, Aleisha and Danielle also created a unique name for their business. “We wanted a name that was bold and different,” explains Aleisha, “so we put our own feminine edge to the word cartel, to create cartelle.”

“We want to know we are supporting the right people, people like us with strong ethics and values,” says Aleisha. The stylish duo is now committed to growing their team, and their young business’s reputation within Townsville. “I don’t think Dani and I really see ourselves as two partners, but more like one unstoppable force,” shares Aleisha. “We are where we are today because of each other and will continue to succeed because of each other.”

Sharing similar values too, Aleisha and Danielle chose DeLorenzo products for the salon because the range is Australian made, environmentally responsible, with no animal testing or ingredients, certified organic ingredients and is sustainably farmed.

Canadian Physiotherapist Rod Hidlebaugh was living in Melbourne – where he met and married Melinda Pratt – when in 2012 the lure of warmer weather became too strong. “That’s right, even the Canadian got tired of the cold and windy Melbourne weather,” Rod laughs. “I asked Mel if she wanted to move to a warmer climate, and I saw an opportunity to set up a couple of practices here in the north.” Having over 16 years’ experience treating back injuries, elite athletes – including Olympic and professional athletes – workers, neck pain, hip, knee and ankle osteoarthritis and pain, and more recently people suffering from vertigo, dizziness and balance problems – Rod’s been referred to as ‘the Vertigo physio’ – Rod knew his skills could be utilised in the north.

Now, Rod and Melinda have two practices in Townsville and Ayr, with a team of six – three Physios, Rod, Rachel and Ute; Naturopath Melinda; and an admin team of two, Sherri, and Brooke. “Mel is the doer and I’m an ideas man,” describes Rod of his and Melinda’s working relationship, “and we both have extensive clinical experience. I’m not sure how Mel treats all the patients she does and keeps the rest of business side of things going, but she does it well.” Melinda’s Naturopathy work focuses on many areas, including women’s health, food allergies, fertility and supporting people through cancer treatment.

“I have seen Mel assist people with numerous conditions and I think to her credit, she is one of the busiest Naturopath’s in the country,” shares Rod. “Working in smaller communities, word of mouth is everything. If you help someone get better, word of mouth gets around. And if you don’t you won’t be busy.” “We have created an individualised and personalised practice,” explains Melinda. And we have achieved a peaceful, calming environment where our patients are comfortable and receive quality care from the same therapist they saw the week before. We think that’s important. “We both have a passion for what we do,” continues Melinda, “and follow Confucius philosophy, ‘If you find something you love to do, you’ll never work another day in your life.’”

For company Director and award-winning builder John Plozza, working with his thengirlfriend, now-wife, Jasmine was one of the best decisions he’s made. “We’d been dating, not for very long, when John’s secretary relocated and he suggested I join his team,” recalls Jasmine. “We were really testing the relationship,” adds John. We had just moved in together; I realised the pressure would be high, living and working together, but I thought if we could handle it, she would be a keeper… In her first week, she quit three times! But we made it through.” Within the first month, the couple fast-tracked the relationship simply by circumstance of

working and living together. That was nine years ago, and as Jasmine says, they haven’t looked back since. As well as welcoming children Allegra, 6, and Jake, 5, the Plozzas started Proview Homes in 2009 and were nominated for two Master Builders Awards in 2013, taking home the Quality Workmanship Award.

“We take great pride in offering a fresh, authentic view on every construct we do. Jasmine and I live and breathe work because we both love the design and construct side of the build. Sharing ideas really lets us get the best possible result for our clients.”

In 2014, Proview Homes was nominated for four awards, taking home two – The President’s Award and The Rising Star Award. They backed it up again in 2015, with four more nominations.

“I think good communication is the strength of our working relationship,” says Jasmine. “Our openness in being able to express to one another how we feel has been right there since the beginning of our relationship. Plus we know how to have fun together.”

“It’s a real testament to our whole team,” emphasises John, whose team is Jasmine as Manager, himself and three permanent staff plus a crew of skilled local subcontractors.

“The ideas never stop. My brain’s thinking 10 years ahead,” laughs John. “I have multiple ideas swirling around at the moment. This is where Jasmine balances me.”

Start Your Day With The Warm And Fuzzies. And no it isn’t coffee.

I was running early for an appointment last week so I took the opportunity and popped in to the Harold Street Mini Mart for a coffee (Great coffee by the way). As I was walking in a ‘little old lady’ walked in just in front of me, walking cane in hand. I ordered my flat white and began to wait till it was ready. The ‘little old lady’ was finalising her shopping, placing her items on the counter. Without much chitchat, her purchases were rang through the till. As the Attendant picked up her bottle of milk,

he opened it and placed it in her bag. I was really shocked because I couldn’t figure out what was going on. Was the milk past its use by date and he was ensuring it couldn’t be returned? He hadn’t said anything to the lady so I was confused and a little angry at what I thought was happening. Then I realised why he had done this. He had broken the seal on the milk lid, so that it was easier for the lady to open when she got home! I was SO impressed (and a little sheepish at my attitude). I headed off with the ‘warm and fuzzies’ and not just because of the delicious coffee! It got me thinking about what service is all about. I have always thought service starts with a smile and a friendly word, but this is not necessarily the whole case. I know a lot of gruff people who provide an awesome service and it does not even cross my mind that they don’t smile or offer the superficial pleasantries that we normally associate with customer service. So what is service all about? I have broken down what I think are the three most important components to consider to provide good service, regardless of what industry you work in and whatever product or service you provide. Clarification Whether you are receiving an order at your cafe, receiving an order for your warehouse or gaining a new client in your accounting firm it is of paramount importance that you seek clarification in multiple ways. Clarify the service your client is expecting (timeframes, pricing, outcome). Clarify your ability to deliver what they expect and be up front if it is different to your expectation. How do you clarify everything in an ongoing manner? Communication.

Communication Simple, clear, regular and concise. If you are having a meeting, send through the agenda early. Once a customer has placed an order, confirm it with them. Are you confused about something? Pick up the phone, send an email or organise another meeting. Communication is two fold. It is not just about what you think you know, it is confirming that it is the same as what the client knows. Follow up after you have completed your task to ensure that is was delivered to the clients expectations. Deliver This (in theory) should be easy. Especially if you have had strong clarification and communication throughout your sales cycle. Just do what was agreed upon! Don’t make the mistake of over servicing, because it can produce mixed results. Throw in a freebie and people might begin to expect it (or think they ended up paying for it). Do more than what was agreed and it might be more than what was actually wanted. You should have a pretty good feel for what is important for you to deliver if you have clarified and communicated well. Remember it’s not just about smiles and pleasantries, it certainly helps, but it is really about knowing what your clients want and can expect.

Celebrity Divorce A Hot Potato There is little more glamorous than a celebrity wedding or as tabloid-worthy as a breakup. But even celebrities can’t wiggle out of Family Court.

IN the interests of anonymity let’s call this couple Mr & Mrs Banana. Mr & Mrs Banana met in 1994 while he was touring with his successful children’s band. Mrs Banana and her son moved in with Mr Banana in 1995 and they married in 1996. They had one child together in 1997. Unfortunately, they did not live happily ever after.

Following their separation, there was little that Mr & Mrs Banana could agree on, including the date they separated. Mr Banana had moved out of the family home in 2004 and at their Court hearing he said this was the time that they separated. Mrs Banana said that they maintained their relationship until 2008, albeit in different homes. So how did the Judge decide? It was generally found that Mrs Banana gave misleading evidence on several crucial points which made her credibility questionable. The Judge agreed with Mr Banana that separation happened in 2004. Being a celebrity marriage, it was a sizeable property pool that they were arguing over, but they could not agree on just what size it was. Mr Banana had paid significant funds to Mrs Banana following separation which he wanted credit for, and he had also lost significant money in unsuccessful real estate ventures following separation, which he said should not be added back into the property pool. In the end the Judge used some of Mr Banana’s figures and some of Mrs Banana’s to come up with a property pool of $12,711,708. The Judge then had to look at the parties’ contributions to the relationship, both financial and non financial. Mr Banana’s interest in the band, which at the time the parties started living together was valued at $1.8 million, was the springboard for the parties’ wealth. He was the sole income earner throughout the relationship, though his extensive touring schedule meant that he was often away from home. Mrs Banana was credited as being the primary homemaker and carer for their child, effectively as a single parent during the times that Mr Banana was touring. The Judge decided that based on contributions, Mr Banana should receive 74% of the property

Caring for the legal needs of North Queenslanders since 1881.

and Mrs Banana 26%. The Judge then had to consider the parties’ future needs. Mr Banana had retired from the band in 2006 for medical reasons, though at the time of trial in 2012 had been re-contracted with the band effectively as an employee. At the end of that contract, Mr Banana was unlikely to find much further success in the entertainment industry. His royalties had been counted an asset rather than income, so it was found that neither party was likely to earn much money. Mrs Banana had primary care of the parties’ 14 year old, with Mr Banana paying considerable child support. Mr Banana was also given credit for supporting Mrs Banana’s child during the relationship. The Judge decided that there needed to be no adjustment for either party’s future needs. The end result therefore was that Mr Banana retained 74% of the property and Mrs Banana 26%. With the way their other assets were divided, Mr Banana had to make a cash payment to Mrs Banana of $463,155. A cash payment of $463,155 might seem low, but it gets worse. Mr Banana had made a settlement offer in 2008 which would have seen Mrs Banana to retain 37.5% of the property pool, which she rejected. He therefore made an Application to recoup some of his legal fees from Mrs Banana. A costs order was made against Mrs Banana for $220,000, being roughly 25 percent of the legal fees paid by Mr Banana, and then Mrs Banana still had to pay her own legal fees. Mr Banana has now re-married, and the new member of his band wearing his old shirt has also recently been married. Hopefully they are both lucky in love this time around, or have well drafted pre-nups.

Another Super Change To A Change... Can You Keep Up?

THIS is keeping us Superannuation professionals on our toes. Earlier this month, Treasurer (the Hon.) Scott Morrison announced changes to the 2016 Federal Budget measures, further to the changes announced on 3 May 2016. The latest announcement was always going to happen in my opinion, but it is important to be aware that there is still no actual legislation released on these measures as yet. Until then, all remains uncertain.

From these new announcements, a consultation draft will be released and legislation is expected to be introduced into Parliament before the end of 2016. Possibly the most sensitive Budget measure was the $500,000 lifetime non concessional contribution cap applying from Budget night, and the fact it took into account all nonconcessional contributions made since 1 July 2007. The Treasurer has now announced that the Government will no longer proceed with this measure and will instead reduce the annual non concessional cap to $100,000 from 1 July 2017. That saves us all digging up the past, so we can now focus on the future. So what can you contribute? If you have a combined super balance of less than $1.6 million (indexed and linked to the transfer balance cap), the ability to make non concessional contributions will be restricted. For those clients under age 65, the bring-forward provisions will continue to remain in place. If clients trigger their bring-forward this financial year, the $540,000 cap will apply. However, if clients do not utilise the full $540,000 bring-forward this year, the remaining bring-forward amount will be reassessed on 1 July 2017 to reflect the new annual caps. The catch-up concessional contribution provisions announced in the May Budget permitted individuals with account balances of $500,000 or less to roll over their unused concessional caps for up to 5 years. This measure will allow many the chance to catch up and make contributions when they have the ability to. The Government has announced their continued support for this,

however are seeking to delay the commencement by 12 months from 1 July 2017 to 1 July 2018. To counterbalance the cost of these changes, the Government will not take away the work test for those between ages 65 to 74. To make a contribution to super for clients in this age group, they must continue to meet the work test of 40 hours over a consecutive 30 day period within the financial year. To give you a clearer idea of what’s proposed, the table below outlines the impacted Budget proposals and the Government’s announced amendments to them. Whilst the announcements have made this topic somewhat clearer, we can’t be certain until these measures become legislation. The Government has stated that they will release consultation legislation with Bills being introduced into the Parliament before the end of the year. However, with the nonconcessional contribution changes due to take effect from 1 July 2017, clients have a window of time to act before the rules change. So become proactive, and consult your financial adviser and your accountant, as soon as you can, to be sure you are not negatively impacted by these announcements.

EMERGING LEADERS:

Where are they now?

MARY BROWN

DUOMagazine October 2016

SOME may view leadership programs as opportunities to take one’s career to the next level. Participants may also be seeking guidance on how to strengthen their business and how to get optimal results from their employees. Others may merely consider leadership programs to be certificate gaining exercises to simply bolster participant’s resumes. This is generally true. However, one leadership program bucks this trend, where longevity is its point of difference. It is hard to ignore the achievements of Townsville Enterprise’s past Emerging Leaders, where graduates are continuing far beyond receiving a participation certificate. Perhaps the difference between graduates of this program and other leadership programs lies in the fundamental objective of the Emerging Leaders Program – to strengthen participants’ business acumen and understanding of how to keep the Townsville North Queensland region developing. The Program offers the region’s next generation of leaders life-long learning and real world connections, beyond what text books and annual reports can offer, specific to the needs of this region. One of the significant goals of the Townsville Enterprise Emerging Leaders Program is for participants to connect in a meaningful way and share their knowledge. This can be achieved by nominating for a board position, becoming a committee member, volunteering, or developing ways to donate time and energy to meaningful causes. Almost half of the 2015/2016 cohort has already secured various board positions with local organisations. Those 20 participants have also

DUOBusiness | Promotion

ZAMMI ROHAN

collectively generated over $5.5M in new business as a direct result of the relationships forged and opportunities presented during the Program. Countless past Emerging Leaders are significantly involved in a variety of industries throughout the region, with many achieving substantial career milestones. Townsville Enterprise Chief Executive Officer Patricia O’Callaghan, Lancini Group of Companies, Chief Financial Officer Luke Guazzo, and Pacific Islands International Managing Director Ashley Finn, are all past Emerging Leaders intensely involved in the progression and growth of a variety of Townsville North Queensland industries. There certainly is proof in the pudding as Mary Brown, Ben Prest, and Zammi Rohan are also further examples of the impact past Emerging Leaders are making on industries within the region. Inaugural Emerging Leaders Program graduate, Mary Brown, has seen exponential growth in her career since graduating from the Program. “I am still the joint owner of NQ Aviation and Hinchinbrook Helicopters and was very pleased to be elected as a Councillor for the Hinchinbrook Shire Council earlier this year and appointed Deputy Mayor for the Shire”. “I’ve maintained my position as President of the Hinchinbrook Chamber, now in my sixth term, and also sit on the board of Tropical Coast Tourism”.

Mary believes the Emerging Leaders Program provided her with greater opportunities to meet a much broader section of the Townsville business community, without needing to relocate from Ingham. “The Program gave me opportunities to understand and develop my knowledge on a range of industries and businesses involved in our local economy. “It also gave me the confidence to go forward and further contribute to my community in the way I am able to through Council, while still being active in my own business, the Chamber, and tourism development.” Ben Prest’s star has also continued to rise in the local business community since his involvement as an Emerging Leader in the 2013/2014 program. Ben is the Construction Manager for leading international property and infrastructure group, LendLease, currently overseeing the Land121 Facilities Upgrade at Lavarack Barracks. With over 14 years’ experience in the building industry, Ben is responsible for the successful delivery of projects valued up to $150M. Since graduating from the Emerging Leaders Program, Ben has also become a committee member of the Townsville Young Chamber. Townsville born and bred Ben credits the Program for exposing him to a wider range of industries in the city he has always called home. “The Program opened me up to a whole world of new contacts across a range of industries in Townsville. Frequently liaising with the other Program participants, guest speakers, and my mentor John Carey (wilson/ryan/grose Lawyers Partner), made me more aware of Townsville’s wider business community.” Both a personal and professional challenge is what drew 9Point9 Architects Owner, Zammi Rohan, to apply for the 2015/2016 Emerging Leaders Program. Zammi has been operating his very successful architect business in Townsville over the past five years. His business design portfolio includes the Watermark Tavern outdoor redevelopment, James Cook University’s Saints College outdoor extension, as well as many innovative office, home and shop design projects. Last year, Zammi decided to step outside his comfort zone and apply to join the Emerging Leaders Program. “I wanted to challenge myself. My industry operates within quite a niche professional community, and I really wanted to expand my network beyond what I was most accustomed to.”

“Learning how other industries and businesses operated in Townsville broadened my understanding about the city we live in, and also provided opportunities for me to meet some highly influential people, such as Julie Bishop, and my fellow program participants, who were all quickly becoming very successful in their chosen fields.” Not only did Zammi expand his knowledge base from guest speakers involved in the Program, but potential business opportunities were also created from new relationships formed with his fellow participants, with whom he is in regular contact. Mary, Ben, and Zammi share similar sentiments of advice to the current crop of Emerging Leaders, or for anyone considering the Program. Their message is simple – completely embrace the opportunity. According to the three past Emerging Leaders, learning from the very best in the Townsville North Queensland business community is an eye-opening experience, where uncapped business possibilities can be created now and into the future. “They most definitely need to make the most of the opportunity – you only get out what you put in,” Mary said. “Just go for it, it’s a wonderful opportunity,” Ben said. “Take a leap of faith and just have a crack of what will be an extremely beneficial professional and personal experience,” Zammi said. It is certainly safe to assume that Townsville North Queensland’s future is in very capable hands. Mary Brown, Ben Prest, and Zammi Rohan are just an example of the scope of Emerging Leaders making significant inroads across a range of local industries. The results past Emerging Leaders have achieved speak for themselves and the local community can feel confident their future city leaders have the potential to guide the region into its most successful era yet. Interested applicants for the 2017 intake should contact Leadership Program Executive, Eleni Millios-Hullick, at Townsville Enterprise to discuss the recruitment process.

Global Luxe Comes To Town

LUXURY comes not only in the form of haute couture but in various pastimes and activities that people engage in. And while high street retailing may never find a place in regional Australia (and indeed is under threat from online shopping globally), there’s every reason to think that North Queensland could offer experiential luxe and its various accoutrements if it put its mind to it. There is an ever growing and diversifying (Asian) consumer base for whom luxe is rapidly moving beyond a Louis Vuitton bag over the shoulder or a garish Versace watch adorning one’s wrist. Indeed, while these may well have been early symbols of the emerging Chinese upper middle class, they are rapidly becoming passé … Luxe matters socially when it is hard to come by; the reality is that branded luxury products are becoming a little too, how should one say, ‘common’.

122

DUOMagazine October 2016

LEISURE & EXPERIENTIAL LUXE Which is why the upper middle class in China (and indeed elsewhere in Asia, though perhaps not in such volumes) is turning to alternate forms of luxe. We see two related patterns emerging. The first follows the route of conventional European custom: wealthy folk invest in country estates and hoard expensive consumables. These parallel demands often converge when the wealthy move from buying palette loads of Château Mouton Rothschilds (at $1,000 a bottle) to buying the vineyards themselves. Country estates and holiday retreats are emerging as the next frontier of upper middle class acquisitive culture. (This is a bit ‘back to the future’.) The second pattern is an emerging adventurism, where luxe is increasingly associated with forms of activity. Whether it’s yachting, thoroughbred racing, fox hunting or equestrian pursuits the emerging (Chinese) upper middle class consumer is seeking to engage in the experiences of luxe. And it is here, at the convergence of the leisure and the experiential luxe that North Queensland has a real opportunity; to grow new industries, create new kinds of jobs and tap into the investment capacity of international companies keen to meet these convergent demands of the (Chinese) upper middle classes. I am talking about luxe tourism. THE WORLD OF HORSES Let’s take one emerging niche as a case in point: the world of horses. If thoroughbred racing is the ‘sport of kings’, then getting into horses is unsurprisingly attracting strong interesting from an emerging well-to-do cohort in China. Twenty years ago, no one in China rode horses recreationally. It was simply too expensive to maintain a recreational steed and there were simply no facilities. It’s a country with lots of people and little land. Wind the clock forward to 2016 and we see over 500 equestrian clubs with more than 500,000 registered amateur riders. Remember, there’s no thoroughbred racing industry in China, so all of this emerging interest in all things equine is focused on eventing, dressage, show jumping and general recreation. To pursue this new recreational pastime, participants need to be well heeled. Land is scarce and precious in China, so keeping a horse and having room to ride one is an expensive hobby. Despite this, research indicates that the number of riders is growing by a staggering

17% per year. This means the number of registered riders will double in the next five years to over one million. Horses are being imported into China from all over the world to satiate this appetite. The majority are presently from Europe (especially the UK) and the USA, but Australian horses are attracting interest. Parents spending $20,000 to acquire and import a horse for their daughter or son is common; I’ve seen it with my own eyes on more than one occasion. Tuition is also a growing market, and it’s a niche that expats are settling into quite well in exclusive riding clubs and country estates. Nothing but the best will do for this emerging cohort of princelings and princesses. Last but not least, equestrian events are being staged in ever-increasing numbers, with international affiliations drawing the best horsemen and horse-women, and horses to China. We have major markets, horse fairs and such like, drawing increasingly large crowds of participants and aspirants. Imagine if North Queensland saw the development of an equestrian-based facility that could support the pastime interests of this cohort, and at the same time provided the breeding ground, literally, for equestrianrelated knowledge and equine exports. The industry and employment opportunities are significant. Vets, trainers, groundskeepers, and breeders to name but a few. Such an industry would need to scale up. Given the size and growth of this “niche” interest, we need to achieve global legibility as a region with excellence in knowledge, service and facilities. Rinky-dink won’t cut it in this world of equestrian luxe. The raw ingredients are there already; it just needs a ‘landing pad’.

DUOBusiness | Observation

“BY 2021 THERE’S LIKELY TO BE OVER ONE MILLION REGISTERED AMATEUR HORSE RIDERS IN CHINA. WE’RE TALKING, THEREFORE, ABOUT A COMBINED MASS OF SAY 3 MILLION PLUS PEOPLE WITH A DIRECT CONNECTION TO RECREATIONAL EQUESTRIAN PURSUITS.”

21ST CENTURY RURAL RESORTS Which brings me to the idea of a 21st century rural resort. Such a resort can anchor a future equestrian luxe industry. It would kill two birds with the one stone, so to speak, by integrating the threads of experience and leisure luxe. To meet this market, we need to understand the specific requirements and expectations of the audience in question. We can see that the numbers aren’t small. By 2021 there’s likely to be over one million registered amateur horse riders in China. Most of these are relatively young, funded in their pastime and hobby by well-to-do parents. We’re talking, therefore, about a combined mass of say 3 million plus people with a direct connection to recreational equestrian pursuits. Even if we could capture 10% of this each year, we are talking about having some 5,770 new visitors each and every week making their way to our region. Perhaps that’s too ambitious. Less ambitiously, at a mere 2% of this market, at 2021 numbers, we are still talking 1,154 visitors on a weekly basis. Chinese tourists spend on average $8,000 per person per visit (2015/16); on this basis, if we could cater to this leisure-experiential luxe niche, we can generate $480m additional direct expenditure in the region each year. Add to that the purchases and export of horses, and you’ve got some serious economic activity happening where none existed before. People who can afford to keep horses in China aren’t the types for slumming it. Glam and luxe must be intertwined with their equestrian and broader outdoor experiences. Otherwise, forget about appealing to this market segment.

The tourism accommodation offer in our region simply doesn’t meet the requirements of this significant niche market. There are problems with quality (4 star instead of 6 star), capacity (just not enough) and locality (accommodation needs to be near to the horses and riding/eventing facilities). If we’re to capture the equestrian luxe market then accommodation must invariably be located closer to where the horse action is. This isn’t rocket science. The other reality is that if our city-region is serious about getting in on the Chinese tourism action, then having sufficient accommodation of the right standard is necessary to drive the business case for direct flights. Daily direct flights is a US$50m a year consideration for an airline. To make a business case stack up, they need to be confident that there’s sufficient interest in a region from a consumer market to warrant the flights; and that the destination in question has the facilities to accommodate the new influx.

is one sub-niche within a broader niche of leisure and experiential luxe, and we’re ideally positioned to do something about it. Are we up to grabbing the future? More to the point, to not do so is a luxury we simply cannot afford.

FEINT OF HEART NEED NOT APPLY None of this is for shrinking violets. To capture this market requires a boldness in public policy leadership that stretches the powers of imagination to their limits. The feint of heart need not apply. We need to apply new modes of design thinking to harmonise the scale requirements of this market with the traditional low-key nature of our rural pursuits. If tourism is to be a big part of the region’s economic future – and there’s every indication that it must be, and can be – then developing niche competencies is critical if we’re to standout from the crowd. More Reward Than Risk In Regions

REAL risk, or perceived risk? I’ve never totally understood why, but when a lot of property investors hear the term ‘regional town’, they automatically freeze up and think ‘regional’ is ‘risky’. The reality is, history has taught us that a majority of the best performing property markets have been in regional towns. It is in every single property investor’s best interest to think long and hard about specifically why they perceive investing in regional locations to be more risky than capital cities. Perhaps this perception is formed through years of dramatic headlines about investors losing money through buying a property from a spruiker in some tiny town with little more than a pub and a few houses occupied by those who work at the only business in town, a new mine? Or, maybe, this perception is more common from those who have never lived anywhere other than a capital city? Over the years, we’ve had many clients express to us that there are better employment opportunities in capital cities than regional towns. In some cases that may be true. However, it is a gross generalisation.

124

The fact of the matter is almost eight (8) million people elect to live in regional towns. There are literally DOZENS of these towns which are well over 100 years old, with all of the essential infrastructure which sustainable communities require, a diverse economy, stable population, better controlled housing supply than bigger profile cities, and employment opportunities are plentiful. Don’t believe me? Check out the unemployment rates of the small sample of strong regional locations. If you ask residents living in regional towns, most of them will say that they prefer a regional lifestyle over a busy capital city. And, you can be guaranteed that the cost of living, including housing, will be significantly more affordable than ‘the big smoke’. It is no more relevant whether or not a property investor would live in a regional town than it is whether a share investor chooses to do their transactional banking with a credit union. Yes, there are plenty of regional locations which Propertyology would never invest in because the degree of risk is too great. But, there is a big difference between ‘real risk’ and ‘perceived risk’ (lack of knowledge). What is risk, anyway? Perth and Darwin are capital city markets that are currently declining in value and it may be a couple years before property values start increasing again. What about the market risk that a few interest rate rises may pose to hundreds of thousands of people living in Sydney with a $800,000 home loan? Or, the very real risk in Melbourne where 90,000 jobs will be chopped in 2016–17 when three big car manufacturing plants close down? Or, almost every capital city in Australia getting smashed with new housing supply in volumes that are higher than has ever occurred before?

Some less informed investors claim that regional markets are more volatile than capital cities. Again, another gross generalisation. Markets which rely very heavily on one industry generally do have more pronounced peaks and troughs. But there are plenty of regional locations which have produced steady price growth, year after year, and have outperformed most capital cities. Real risk, or perceived risk? There is risk with every investment. Propertyology doesn’t discriminate between capital cities or regional towns – we invest in both. That said, our money is that history will repeat itself – certain regional towns will produce better returns for investors than capital cities. The objective of investing is to make money. Astute investment decisions aren’t made with the blinkers on. And, they most certainly aren’t made with the sheep mentality of following the herd.

Defence And Council Puts On A Show For Townsville’s 150th Celebrations THE T150 Defence Force Air Show and Townsville Bulletin Sky Show is the most highly anticipated community event of the T150 Celebrations. The countdown is on for the event which takes place on Saturday 15 October along The Strand. This exciting day kicks off with a rare opportunity to see all of the units at RAAF Base Townsville exercise their Freedom of Entry to the City of Townsville. The parade commences at 10am from Strand Park and will conclude at Anzac Park. The Air Show begins at 1pm and will feature most of Air Force’s current fleet in addition to the latest CH47F and MRH90 helicopters from the 5th Aviation Regiment based in Townsville. To showcase Air Force’s long connection with the region, iconic historical military aircraft which operated in North Queensland will once again grace the sky over Townsville.

Spectators at the Air Show will be able to see flying displays by a Tiger Moth trainer, Hudson bomber, Catalina seaplane, Mustang fighter, a Neptune maritime patrol and Caribou tactical transport aircraft. They can also expect to see the Air Force’s latest fighter jets showcase their speed, power and agility and the elite aerobatics team the Roulettes. Crowd favourites such as the C-17A Globemaster III, KC-30A Multi-Role Tanker Transport, Hawk 127 and the E-7A Wedgetail will also feature. The Air Force Balloon will be on static display at the Jezzine Barracks Precinct. Townsville City Council is offering an array of entertainment on the ground throughout the day and into the night. Live performances and food vendors will be located along the Strand, including a main stage at Strand Park and another smaller stage at the Gregory Street amphitheatre.

“Noni is simply mesmerising” Shane Douthie Wangaratta Chronicle 2015

After dusk, the Townsville Bulletin Sky Show will light up the sky with breathtaking fireworks and a flare drop staged by the Air Force’s C130J Hercules and AP-3C Orion aircrafts. For more details and full program of events visit www.whatson.townsville.qld.gov.au

Noni Hazlehurst in Mother Mother is a one-woman play written for award winning actor Noni Hazlehurst (City Homicide, A Place to Call Home). This provocative performance will leave you haunted with understanding and sympathy for those living on the farthest edges of society. Christie (Noni Hazlehurst) has found herself at the fringe of the world. Homeless, aging, living on the outskirts of suburbia, she attracts the curiosity of the locals with the story of her colourful, troubled life.

Get set for three days of Latin-style fun (November 4–6) as Movimiento again livens up Townsville with its El Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) festival. Writer Chloe Chomicki Photographer Nicole Zicchino

THE DEAD

DON’T let the title turn you off — ‘The Day of the Dead’ (aka El Dia de los Muertos) may sound like a drag but it’s actually a celebration of life and reminder to make the most of each day. If you’ve seen Mexico’s Day of the Dead festival on TV, where revellers dressed in colourful costumes flood the streets, then you’ll know the intention is to have a good time. And it’s this motivation that was firmly in mind when Movimiento founder Bernadette Ashley first brought this flamboyant fiesta concept to Townsville in 2012. “The first Movimiento El Dia costume latin party was in our Flinders Street dance studio in 2012 and it has grown in popularity each year,” says Bernadette. “This year we’re expecting more than a thousand people to come along and we’ve got the hugest party yet planned. Tickets are available from townsvilletickets.com.au and you can come along just for one evening or immerse yourself in the whole three-day experience complete with sugar skull facepainting.” Taking place over three days, the fiesta will kick off on Friday night at Molly Malones with a welcome launch party and workshops with talented Sydney-based Cuban dancer Adrian Medina. Saturday is the main event, La Noche Fiesta, and will be held at the Old Courthouse Theatre with Thrash Flamencostyle band Kallidad returning as the headline act. And Sunday those who prefer to literally >

taste the Latino culture will get their chance as A Touch of Salt’s restaurant and plaza is transformed into a Flavours of Latin America smorgasboard. “Last year’s party was a huge success and launched a local following for Sydney band Kallidad, whose ‘Mariachi Metal’ sound had the crowd hitting the dancefloor. They performed at the Palm Creek Folk Festival recently where they won more fans and are looking forward to heading back up North,” Bernadette says. “And just as aerial silk artist and musician Lisa Mondo unexpectedly unfurled from the silks to hang upside down and play trumpet during Kallidad’s set last year, there will again be a few surprises.” Also keeping the party in full swing Saturday night will be Colombian DJ Rah on the decks, percussion jamming sessions with local musicians and a fire show by Fireflyz, not to mention an amazing dance floorshow. Bernadette’s love of the Latino culture and aesthetic was cemented by a month-long dance training trip to Cuba.” “I was previously a writer and artist who taught dance recreationally but after visiting Cuba I found that my fascination for Latino culture grew,” Bernadette says. “So I turned my hobby into a profession by starting Movimiento in 2011 to teach street Latin dance styles in Townsville. I’ve become increasingly aware of the role of dance

and music in enhancing wellbeing, of how beautifully it orders our neurones and connects us to others socially.” Bernadette’s dance school has now become something of a broader cultural and artistic force due to her connections in the arts community in Townsville. Focused on bringing together local dancers, musicians, artists and businesses, she’s been the driving force in launching events like El Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). “The collaborative nature of the events I organise honours our community spirit,” Bernadette says. “Over the past five years I’ve had the pleasure of teaming up with local dance groups such as Scimitar Moon Belly Dance and Swing Dance Townsville and venues such as Heritage Exchange, Molly Malones, Newmarket Hotel, Picnic Bay Hotel and A Touch of Salt for events, socials and dance classes.” Bernadette says rituals and traditions for honouring the dead have increased in popularity with the western version giving way to a more celebratory feast. “Now music, dance, food and decorations are all part of the celebrations and El Dia de los Muertos will have all of that and more.”

Botswana Rib-Eye of Beef A meat thermometre is a reassuring piece of kitchen equipment, especially when you are cooking larger cuts of meat. There are guidelines for testing the internal temperature of meat and fish, but it is really personal preference so you will need to have a bit of a play around. For the best possible results always rest your meat and take into account the heat from the outside of what you have cooked will still be working while it is resting. The amount the internal temperature will rise depends on the weight of the meat. The difference between the surface temperature and the internal temperature when it comes out of the oven can vary. Larger cuts of meat, can be browned on a chargrill, barbecue plate or frying pan and then placed in a hot oven at 210ºC–220ºC (425ºF) to finish cooking. Serve with plenty of roasted garlic bulbs to add a savoury boost.

Serves 2–3

INGREDIENTS

METHOD

1kg rib-eye of beef, at room temperature

Rub the steak with olive oil, salt and freshly ground black pepper.

1 tbsp olive oil

Preheat a chargill, barbecue plate or large frying pan over a medium–high heat. Add the rib-eye and cook. Use a meat thermometer to check the internal temperature of the rib-eye.

salt and freshly ground black pepper Roasted garlic 4 whole garlic bulbs 2 tbsp olive oil flaky salt 1 tsp thyme leaves

Cook until 42ºC (about 107ºF) then leave to rest for up to 15 minutes – the meat thermometer should reach 54ºC (about 129ºF) for medium-rare meat. Or 37ºC (about 98ºF) then leave to rest – the meat thermometer should reach 50ºC (about 122ºF) for rare meat. To make roasted garlic Preheat the oven to 200ºC (400ºF). Line a roasting dish with foil. Use a sharp knife to slice off the top quarter of the garlic exposing the cloves and place the garlic in the roasting dish. Drizzle over a little oil and sprinkle with salt and the thyme. Fold over the foil to enclose the garlic and place in the oven to roast for 40 minutes or until the garlic cloves are very soft.

Caramelised Witlof Salad This salad makes a great lunch dish. Serve with crusty bread to mop up all the scrumptious dressing. Extra dressing will keep for a few days in the fridge for another salad. Try not to overcook the witlof, it is better with a little crunch. Use any salad ingredients that you have to hand along the lines of the ones we have suggested.

Serves 4

INGREDIENTS

METHOD

1 tbsp olive oil

Heat a frying pan over medium heat and add the olive oil. Add the witlof, cut-side down, and cook until golden brown. Add the honey and allow to bubble and begin to caramelise. Watch carefully so it does not burn. Pour in the grapefruit juice, lower the heat, cover the frying pan and simmer until the witlof is al dente. Test for doneness regularly using the point of a small sharp knife. Add a little water if necessary to prevent sticking. Reserve the cooking liquid.

4 witlof (chicory/Belgian endive), trimmed and cut in half lengthwise 2 tbsp honey 125 ml pink grapefruit juice Dressing 125 ml pink grapefruit juice 1 tbsp honey ½ tbsp American mustard

For the dressing, whisk together the grapefruit juice, honey and mustard. Gradually whisk in the oils until emulsified. Whisk in the reserved cooking liquid and season with salt and pepper. To serve, make a salad on large serving plates using the suggested ingredients. Top with the caramelised witlof and enough dressing to moisten.

1½ tbsp walnut oil 250 ml grapeseed oil Salad suggestions for serving • baby cos (romaine) lettuce leaves • radicchio leaves, torn • heirloom carrots, lightly peeled and cut in half lengthwise • radishes, halved or very thinly sliced, plus baby radishes • choggia beetroot, very thinly sliced • pink grapefruit segments • blue cheese, cut into slices • walnut halves, toasted

I’m renowned for: Asking for the details. As a child I always… looked for things to climb, didn’t matter whether it was a table, a roof or a tree, I always wanted to be off the ground and looking around. If I had a superpower it would be: Time travel – that’s where all the answers are. When I’m alone in my car I think about: How to better design the visors and seat belts. Both are essential but neither would win a prize for outstanding design or comfort. Right now I wish I was… shaking hands with my bank manager who is effusing about my exceptionally speedy final mortgage repayment. My favourite day is: Christmas Eve. It’s always been a day of changing excitement and anticipation. Now, the gathering of friends to prepare for the following day over a few wines can’t be

beaten. One thing I can’t live without is: My sun visor. In five years from now I hope I’m… still doing bootcamp. Last gift I gave someone was: Six koala ties – five inadvertently purchased from eBay, for someone who misses Australia. Best advice I’ve been given: Choose your battles carefully. My biggest regret: Never having learned to play a musical instrument beyond the school recorder. The best day of my life (so far): Stepping onto the tarmac at Sydney airport as a new Australian; I knew I’d arrived and that the world on that day was my oyster. Two celebrities I’d like to dine with: Adam Liaw and Paul Kelly. One could cook and one could serenade – doesn’t matter which way round as the end result would be fabulous. The motto I live by: Be true to yourself.

AKA: Wombat - it goes back to rep teams playing indoor cricket. I’m renowned for: Getting in and getting it done. The song that describes me best is: Monty Python’s Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life. As a child I always… wanted to play and jump in the puddles, the simple things in life. If I had a superpower it would it be: Duplicate myself so that I can help twice as much to get things done. When I’m alone in my car I think about: What song is on the radio or the play list as I find being in the car on a drive and the music going is very relaxing and gives me the chance to unwind. Right now I wish I was… travelling the world watching cricket in all the great ovals and stadiums of the world. My favourite day is: Everyday the sun shines, and the weekends as it is cricket time – the smell of leather and

willow. One thing I can’t live without is: The inspiration to make a difference. In five years from now I hope I’m… still being inspired everyday. Last gift I gave someone was: A gift card to my daughter for her birthday. But I also give out plenty of advice. Best advice I’ve been given: Words don’t make you a better person, behaviour does. My biggest regret: Not following some of my dreams earlier in life as a teenager. The best day of my life (so far): The birth of my two children. Two celebrities I’d like to dine with: Sir Richard Branson and John Cleese, great conversations over the dinner table, both are good intellects, witty and funny. The motto I live by: The most important thing in life is to have fun and enjoy the moment.

AKA: Don’t have one, that I can mention. I’m renowned for: Always being on time. The song that describes me best is: Lazy Sunday Afternoon. I’m pretty laid back (apparently). As a child I always… wagged school to go surfing or ride motorbikes. Until I was found down the beach by my Dad and Head Master. Not a good day that one. If I had a superpower it would be: The power to travel through time and space. To see history as it happened and of course go forward to see what’s ahead of us. Let’s be honest I would go forward to find out next week’s Lotto numbers. When I’m alone in my car I think about: Friends, next bike ride, the next job that I’m going to. Right now I wish I was… cruising around Australia on my motor bike. My favourite day is: Monday. Start of a new week, you never know what’s

coming. One thing I can’t live without is: I really can’t live without my Ducati. It’s my escape. Helps keep me sane. In five years from now I hope I’m… riding around Australia for a year then after that I would like to ride around Europe. Best advice I’ve been given: It’s OK to dream, chase after those dreams. My biggest regret: Can’t think of any. The best day of my life (so far): The day I picked up my Ducati Diavel. Two celebrities I’d like to dine with: Barry Sheen and Valentino Rossi. Two legends of the Moto GP. The motto I live by: Don’t look back, keep moving forward.

AKA: Loz or Lozzie. I’m renowned for: Baking and cooking for my friends and family. The song that describes me best is: Happy by Pharrell Williams. As a child I always… wanted to be a hairdresser. If I had a superpower it would it be: The ability to heal myself and others. After undergoing surgery on my knee last year due to a sporting injury, I now no longer take for granted the freedom of movement I have and to be able to give freedom of movement to others would be a humbling and life changing experience. Right now I wish I was… travelling the world luxuriously and leisurely! My favourite day is: Sunday during cricket season as this is when I get to have a great game of cricket with a group of talented and fun women; it’s always a highlight of the week. One thing I can’t live without is:

Google! I have a curious mind and love learning new things, so Google facilitates instant answers for the things I don’t know. In five years from now I hope I’m… still working in a job I love with an amazing and supportive team, and playing cricket in a women’s league. Last gift I gave someone was: Some journals for a colleague filled with some kind thoughts at random places throughout the books. Best advice I’ve been given: Surround yourself with people that challenge you to be the best person you can be. The best day of my life (so far): One of the best days so far was arriving back in Australia after a month in Europe and knowing I’d made my travel dream a reality. Two celebrities I’d like to dine with: Hamish and Andy because it seems like it would be fun. The motto I live by: Treat others how you wish to be treated. DUOMagazine October 2016

Shear Talent Putting North Queensland models on the map is Naomi Shears’ mission and with so many beautiful local girls (inside and out) she’s spoilt for choice. “NORTH Queensland has so many gorgeous girls that have the potential to have international modelling careers but they just weren’t getting seen because they weren’t living in the big cities,” says Shear Model Management founder Naomi Shears. “That’s why I started Shear Model Management in January of 2013. It was an untapped market up here so I thought it was time to change that.” As a ‘Mother Agency’ Shear Model Management scouts, develops and promotes its models to bigger agencies in Australia and overseas. Naomi’s job is to prepare her models for that next step of meeting larger agencies and gaining international contracts. “I’m very proud of how far we have come in such a short time,” Naomi says. “I represent both women and men from Brisbane to Cairns with the majority coming from Townsville. I’ve had girls with contracts in Asia and Milan and recently had two girls walking in Sydney Fashion Week, which was super exciting!

160

DUOMagazine October 2016

“I love the buzz around Fashion Week and there’s nothing better than watching our girls kill it on the runway.” With such a small timeframe that a model can work in the industry, Naomi says there has to be a lot of dedication to make the most of the opportunities. “In 2016 the modelling industry is a hard industry to crack,” Naomi says. “Times have changed with social media now having a big influence and being a full-time model is more than a job – it’s a lifestyle. Not only do models have to be fit and healthy, but they also have to make sure everything is always in peak condition – their hair, skin, body, mentality…” At the moment Naomi says there is a lot of social media work for Instagram and web pages as well as advertising campaigns and designer look books. She says what the bigger agencies love about our previously undiscovered North Queensland talent is their raw style and and the laid-back personality that comes from living away from the big cities.

“One of my models, Cassandra Keogh, has done some amazing things walking in Melbourne and Sydney fashion weeks for the past two years and modelling for designers such as Alice McCall, Dion Lee, Camilla and Steven Khalil,” Naomi says. “She has even opened a show, which is a pretty big deal. She’s still only 18 so watch this space.” Always on the look-out for more talent, Naomi says she wants to keep growing the agency and for more stars to come out of this region. “I would love to have one of my girls on the cover of Vogue and also girls and guys walking in high fashion shows like Chanel, Valentino and Balmain,” she says. “One day I imagine sitting at New York Fashion week watching some of my girls walking the runway and taking North Queensland to the world stage.”
