Tool House

Located at the edge of Chinatown, the project aims to provide public space for the residents in Chinatown through the combination of studios and workshops to promote and produce multiple forms of traditional crafting arts that represent the image of Chinatown.

The project will be a working place for craftsmen from multiple generations to share their skills and experience; and bridge the distance between the two generations: the old and the young. With the tools provided in a sharing space, users can share experiences with traditional materials and new materials with different techniques and outcomes. The main user group will be the long-term residents of Chinatown and the people that have been providing services through their long-time business in Chinatown such as clothes alternating, shoe making, repair services, etc. For the main user group to gain more attention and appreciation from the public, the workshops and collaborations of studios and public spaces are introduced on the ground floor and extended to the second and thirwith public outdoor spaces to make the work of the main users visible to the public and to the sub-users which is the visitors who wants to learn the skills.

To house the working spaces, the project aims to provide access to daylight and outdoor space adjacent to the working spaces to support the particular needs of crafting works such as carpentry, embroidery, and culinary. The project begins with the courtyard typology of a U-shape massing to provide daylighting for the infill lot, then the U-shape massing got stacked, rotated, and subtracted to leave out different iterations of terraces facing the open courtyard. The stacking and rotating of the U-shape massing leave out the overlaying figures of indoor space and outdoor space, creating an opportunity for vertical circulation to experience the transition between indoor and outdoor space.

Communal House

Cal Poly Pomona ∙ Fall 2022

The project is located at 1936 N Thomas Street, on a hilly terrain near Lincoln park. The neighborhood includes mostly house owners that have been living there for a long time while sharing the property with renters. With the housing price fluctuating higher year by year, the project aims to provide compact houses in a small community on one property to provide another option for first-time home buyers that is more affordable than the typical single house. The project includes four private dwelling units of rowhouses and a communal house where the residents can share amenities and social activities together. In terms of the organization of apertures, the private living space is open at the south and north façade, while the communal space is open at the east and the west to set the views to different directions and to remain private for the private dwelling units.

The private space and the semi-public space are connected by a public staircase that runs uphill as the main circulation to each unit and to the communal area. Each housing unit comprises 3 floors, the ground floor has a small kitchen in an open space to provide more flexibility for the inhabitants. The two upper floors have 3 bedrooms that can be opened out to the hallway and be changed to either a small living space or a home office. The communal area contains a laundry room on the lower floor and a communal kitchen on the upper floor. The communal kitchen is spacious with double-height space and a mezzanine as a second living room where the residents can hang out and have a meal together. The communal space is open to an outdoor courtyard and is connected with a greenhouse where the residents can grow produce and have gardening activities together.

Prefab ADUs

Cal

The prefabricated ADU architecture project is a modern solution to the growing demand for housing units that are cost-effective, sustainable, and efficient. The project features a modular system that allows for customization and flexibility in design, making it suitable for different site requirements and family sizes.

The ADU modules are designed to be categorized by rooms and their function, including living rooms, bedrooms, bathrooms, and kitchens. These modules can be rotated and placed in different configurations, creating a variety of layout options. Additionally, the modules are customizable, enabling clients to choose their preferred materials and finishes. The ADUs are grouped into three different sizes, small, medium, and large, to accommodate the needs of different families. The small ADUs can feature one bedroom and one bathroom, while the medium-sized units can include two bedrooms and one bathroom. The large ADUs can include two large bedrooms and two bathrooms, providing ample space for a larger family.

To provide private outdoor space, the ADUs can feature a covered patio and a roof deck. These spaces are designed to complement the overall aesthetics of the ADU, while also offering a functional and enjoyable outdoor area for the dwellers.

The prefabrication process begins in a factory, where the modules are constructed, complete with finishes, plumbing, and electrical systems. The modules are then transported to the site where a foundation is constructed by local constructors to secure the ADU. The roof assembly is also installed on-site using prefabricated roof panels, completing the construction process.

Swiss House

SchneiderLuescher & :mlzd Competition

Summer 2022

The competition is a conceptual design project developed during an internship at SchneiderLuescher and in collaboration with Genossenschaft :mlzd Architekten. Swiss house on Mission street is a remodeling project to extend the building for a multitude of user defined programmatic and spatial experiences. A building that will be more defined through its occupants than its design aesthetics. The site of the new Swiss house is located where the historic and the new San Francisco meet, giving the project an opportunity to act as an urban interface between the future and the past. Therefore, it is important for the new building to provide a continuation of the public space of the street to the interior of the building. The program placement reconfigures a buffer zone in between the historic façade and the new building envelope shaping a private public space with its ‘interior street’. This encounter zone provides much potential for networking between multiple Swiss House users. To ensure the building has public access means of egress, daylight, appropriate ceiling heights for mezzanines, and seismic resilience, new functional elements is added by inserting scaffolds into the existing structure for structural strengthening, spatial organization, and circulation. The added structure also provides expansion for the building in the future and explore multiple aspects such as sustainability and event space on the roof top.
