IN CHARGE:

WAYNE BROWN

FINALLY, WE ARE BACK HOME FOR A COMPETITIVE FIXTURE. IT’S BEEN SUCH A LONG TIME, BUT I HOPE YOU AND ALL YOUR FAMILIES ARE OKAY AND IN GOOD HEALTH, AFTER WHAT HAS BEEN A TOUGH FOR TIME FOR EVERYBODY.

Today I’d like to extend a warm welcome to Keith and his Aveley side, today’s match officials and the supporters of both teams. 15th December 2020 was the last time we played a home game in front of supporters, 249 days ago come Saturday, so it is brilliant to be able to welcome our supporters back today. We have started the season with a number of new and old faces, who I’m sure will make the team stronger and maintain competition for places. We started the season on Saturday with a victory over Romford and I was delighted to see our goals coming from all areas of the pitch. I was especially pleased for young Bryan Ifeanyi, scoring three goals on his debut since joining the club from Colchester on loan. Bryan is a special talent and someone I am looking forward to watching this season. Over the last few seasons, we have done well in various cup competitions and we are excited at the prospect of doing well again. However, today’s test will be a big one in the form of Aveley, who will be a real tough nut to crack. Keith has recruited well over the summer, improving on a very settled and strong squad. They’ll be well organised and we will have to be on top of our game if we want to proceed to the next round. I’m obviously pleased to be playing the fixture at home - our supporters are always brilliant in supporting the team and they always make a massive difference to how the boys perform on the pitch. So, please bring your best voices, make lots of noise and cheer the boys on as much as you can. I, along with all of the team, really appreciate your support and we can’t wait to see you after so long. I hope you enjoy the game. Wayne

PRE-SEASON ROUND-UP

It’s been a packed three weeks of match action for the Jammers as Wayne Brown’s side ramped up their preparations for the start of the new campaign. Getting the match action underway at Bishop’s Stortford in mid-July, the Jammers shared the spoils in the fourgoal contest before bagging four goals of their own at Bowers & Pitsea a few days later. A brace from Scott Kemp and a goal apiece from two trialists sealed a comfortable 4-1 victory for Maldon who fielded two different elevens in each half. A first home pre-season friendly for Brown’s men saw Hertford Town make the short trip across to Essex, and two trialists again found the target for the Jammers either side of half-time. The visitors would go on to level the game up thanks to two late goals.

FRIENDLY RESULTS

Kemp was once again amongst the goals in another 4-1 victory for Maldon when they welcomed Essex Senior League side Athletic Newham to Park Drive in the final week of July. Three different trialists were responsible for the Jammers’ other goals. Kemp notched his fourth goal of pre-season four days later, but

the Jammers were unable to avoid their first defeat of the warm-up campaign as they fell to a 2-1 reverse at home to Cambridge City. Two successive away games finished off the pre-season programme, with trips to Billericay Town and Concord Rangers ending with a 2-2 draw and 2-0 defeat, respectively.

ROMFORD MALDON & TIPTREE

SATURDAY 14TH AUGUST | THE PITCHING IN ISTHMIAN LEAGUE NORTH | ATT: 106

Maldon & Tiptree started off the new season in the best possible way, with a comprehensive 7-0 victory over Romford. Wayne Brown’s side were missing a number of key first team players including Martyn Stokes (absent), Kojo Atowi (injured) and Makosini Khanye (isolating). After several new arrivals, Brown handed competitive debuts to four members of his squad from the start, whilst Charlee Hughes and Laste Dombaxe made their second debut for the club, having rejoined in recent weeks.

10

MALDON & TIPTREE vs AVELEY

Just four minutes into the new season, the Jammers found themselves in front. Aaron Williams-Bushell was perhaps playing in an unfamiliar full-back position, but he used his attacking mindset to his advantage to dribble right through Romford’s centre. He released Bradley McClenaghan on the right flank who delivered a delightful cross, finding debutant Bryan Ifeanyi at the back post to head home his first goal for the club. In what was an end-to-end opening, Romford battled hard to find an immediate response and created a number of chances without finding the finishing touch.

Ifeanyi was denied his second goal by a powerful save from the home goalkeeper but, as the hosts pushed forward, Brown’s side looked dangerous on the counter attack and, once again, had Williams-Bushell to thank for his involvement in the second goal of the game. Much like the first, he broke from full-back and skipped past several challenges, this time finding Scott Kemp in the centre who released Ifeanyi in behind the Romford defence. The young loanee made no mistake and drilled his effort beyond Simeon in the home goal for his second goal of the afternoon, just 22 minutes into his Jammers debut. Both Hughes and McClenaghan went close as the Jammers looked to further extend their lead, whilst Harry Taylor, another debutant, saw his appeals for a penalty shrugged off by the referee. Whatever the Romford manager said at the half-time interval made little impact on his side. After conceding just four minutes into the first half, it took just five minutes of the second half before the third goal was scored. It was that man again, Bryan Ifeanyi. Following a powerful run from Lordon Akolbire, Ifeanyi was able to dribble his way past the home defence again before smashing the ball home for a debut hat-trick. This brought an end to his afternoon, being replaced shortly afterwards by another new boy, Malachi Napa. Napa was straight into the action and, with the Romford heads dropping, Maldon continued to press on for more goals. Napa’s expert cross was headed into the arms of the goalkeeper by Scott Kemp, but as a result of some sloppy defensive work, Charlee Hughes robbed the defender of the ball and released Kemp in behind the defence, the Jammers forward catching the goalkeeper off-guard to drill home his first goal of the season. The visitors were just relentless and continued to create chance after chance - and, just two minutes after the fourth goal, Brown’s men had their fifth. Returning the favour was Kemp, recording his second assist of the afternoon as he played an inch-perfect pass to Hughes. Breaking beyond the Romford back line, he curled home a composed effort for his first goal of the season. With the game well under control, Brown replaced Dombaxe with Jayden Beales and Tyrell Lowe replaced Hughes upfront. The changes didn’t impact the Jammers’ chances of creating opportunities, though, and they soon had their sixth goal of the afternoon. It was another debutant, this time John Gilbert, who received Napa’s pass 25 yards out and let fly a fierce effort into the bottom corner. Home goalkeeper Carlos Simeon had no chance. Five minutes later, the Jammers capped off a fine afternoon with their seventh and final goal of the contest. A pinpoint through ball from Beales had Simeon rushing out, but he underestimated Napa’s speed who was able to get a toe to the ball first, before placing the ball into an empty net to mark his debut with a fine goal. The goal capped off a superb performance from Wayne Brown’s side to gave the travelling fans a real opening day treat.

MALDON & TIPTREE vs AVELEY

Formed in 1927, Aveley played in local leagues until 1939 when club activities were suspended during the war until 1945. In 1946 the club was reformed and joined the Thurrock Combination. Aveley twice won the Essex Junior Cup, firstly in 1948 before retaining it the following year. Aveley gained Senior League status in 1949/50 and were elected into the London League, Division One. They were champions in 1951/52, also moving from Lodge Meadow to Mill Field during the campaign and promptly being nicknamed the Millers. They were champions again in 1954/55, earning them election to the Delphian League in 1955/56 where they competed until 1962/63 with little success. 1963/64 saw Millers join the Athenian League with full membership of the Football Association granted the following season. Arguably Aveley’s most successful campaign was 1970/71, reaching the FA Cup first

round as well as the quarter finals of the FA Amateur Cup, whilst going on to win the Athenian League as well. Aveley were elected to the Isthmian League in 1973/74, competing without success in Division One until they were relegated to Division Two North at the end of the 1985/86 season. The Millers did however achieve two cup successes during this time - the Essex Thames-Side Challenge Trophy was won in 1979/80 and the Hornchurch Charity Cup in 1982/83. The 1989/90 campaign was a memorable one for the Millers. Promotion back to Division One was gained with a tremendous end of season run-in to finish second to Heybridge Swifts by two points. This was followed by a 3-0 victory over Premier Division St. Albans in the final of the AC Delco (League) Cup, making Aveley the first team from the lowest division to win this competition. After this, the club slipped

down to Division Three and cup successes were limited to appearances in the finals of both the East Anglian Cup and the The Essex Thames-Side Challenge Trophy in 1997/98.

A poor league season in 2006/07 was again compensated for by winning the Essex Thames-Side Challenge Trophy for the second time in just three seasons.

The 1999/00 season started well with Aveley remaining unbeaten in the league until Christmas. A turn in fortunes saw them slip, however, and they would eventually finish ninth. This was followed by a sixth-placed finish in 2000/01.

After a disappointing start to the 2007/08 campaign, November saw the arrival of Rod Stringer as manager and fortunes turned. The Millers posted a string of impressive results together to finish the season in a mid-table position. 2008/09 saw the foundations that were laid the previous season bare their fruit, with Aveley winning the Ryman League Division One North title on the last day of the season in dramatic fashion away to East Thurrock United. In what was a tense finish to the season, the Millers set a club record of 11 straight away league wins and Rod Stringer was duly judged as the Manager of the Season for the division.

2001/02 was a real rollercoaster of a season that saw the club finish third behind Hornchurch and champions Croydon Athletic, winning promotion to Division 1 North. An excellent season for the Millers in 2002/03. Good runs in the FA Cup and Bryco Cup were capped off with an appearance in the Essex Senior Cup final. This did not go the Millers’ way, though, with Chelmsford City beating Aveley 5-0. The club progressed to the FA Cup third qualifying round that season too, eventually losing 2-0 to Canvey Island. A good run-in saw the Millers finish sixth in their league campaign. The 2003/04 season saw the club eventually finish in 14th place, whilst also matching the previous season’s performance by reaching the final of the Essex Senior Cup. This time a muchimproved display saw them go down 3-1 to local rivals Thurrock. The final game of the season was another cup final, this time in the East Anglian Cup, which saw a visit to Spalding United. This also finished in a 3-1 defeat for the Millers. 2004/05 was a disappointing season for the Millers’ maiden campaign in the Southern League, the club finishing in 15th place. Compensation, however, came in the form of the Essex Thames-Side Challenge Trophy where Aveley beat Romford 1-0 in the final at the Mill Field, Simon Thomas scoring the only goal of the game. Another difficult season followed, on and off the pitch, as Millers ended the 2005/06 season with their third manager, Steve Browne, steering them just clear of the relegation places.

2009/10, Aveley’s first season in the Isthmian Premier Division, saw the Millers enjoy a great finish to the season with 12 wins from the last 14 games. It was a run of form that lifted the club into third place and set up a home semi-final play-off tie against Boreham Wood. Unfortunately, it was one step too far, and a 1-0 defeat saw the end of a fantastic season. Rod Stringer departed for Braintree Town at the end of that campaign, taking with him his management team and the whole playing squad. Subsequently, a difficult season was to be endured with Aveley needed a 3-2 win at Hastings on the final day to enable the club to stave off relegation by virtue of a reprieve. It was only a short-lived reprieve, though, with 2011/12 serving up much of the same and leading to relegation just a year after that final day escape. Justin Gardner was appointed as boss in February 2012 and began moulding a squad to push for an immediate return, going on to spend the entirety of 2012/13 in the play-off spots - the promotion tilt would eventually end at the hand of the Jammers, with Maldon & Tiptree beating Aveley in the play-off semi-finals. After many years of trying for a new stadium, 2013/14 heralded a new era for Aveley. Panning permission was finally granted in March 2014 for a new state-of-the-art facility to be built with work beginning on the new Parkside site in July 2016. The stadium would take a year to complete, and Terry Spillane was the man in charge to lead Aveley out at their new stadium in August 2017, opening with a visit from Dulwich Hamlet. Spillane would part company with the club within weeks though, and he was replaced by James Webster from Brightlingsea who had lifted the Regent up four steps in seven seasons.

A RECORD FA TROPHY RUN ENDED AT NOTTS COUNTY IN 2020

2018/19 would see the Millers miss out on promotion, finishing as runners-up to Bowers & Pitsea only to lose out in the play-off semi-finals once again, this time to Heybridge Swifts. That impressive form continued into the 2019/20 campaign too, with Aveley sat in second place again at the curtailment of the season due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Millers also enjoyed a club-record FA Trophy run, reaching the quarter finals where they would bow out to Notts County in front of a record crowd for an Aveley fixture, with 530 travelling fans making up part of the Meadow Lane crowd of 4,893.

MALDON & TIPTREE

CLUB HISTORY

In 2009, Ed Garty took over the ownership of Maldon Town from Michael Kirkham, whilst still in charge of running Tiptree United and installed Alan Brockhouse as Maldon Town’s new chairman. Following the takeover, Colin Wallington returned for a second spell in charge of Maldon Town, leaving his post as Tiptree United manager immediately. Colin previously managed Maldon Town from 2003 until 2007, having achieved promotion in the 200506 via the play-off final. Having left Maldon in 2007, Colin went on to manage Tiptree United where he achieved promotion winning the

16

MALDON & TIPTREE vs AVELEY

Eastern Counties Division One title in the 2007/08 season. Until the conclusion of the 2009/10 season both Maldon Town & Tiptree United played their home games at Park Drive, under a ground share arrangement. In the summer of 2010, Maldon Town & Tiptree United amalgamated to form, Maldon & Tiptree Football Club, under the ownership of Ed Garty. As a result of the amalgamation, Tiptree United withdrew from the Essex Senior League, resulting in the club’s last ever fixture being a 3-1 defeat against Enfield 1893 on 24 April 2010. Maldon & Tiptree took

the place of Maldon Town in the Isthmian Division One North. Following the retirement of Colin Wallington, Assistant Manager, Brad King and Glen Knight were appointed as the clubs JointManager. As the pair’s first managerial role, the new club witnessed wholesale changes with only a handful of players remaining who finished the season with Maldon Town and Tiptree United, respectively. The 2010-11 campaign saw the new club remain in or around the play-off positions for the majority of the season, finishing in eighth

place to finish the season with sixty-three points. Despite the high turnover of players, the good standard of football was maintained and it was in the end, a disappointing end to the season, for the club to fall away in the later stages of the season when suspensions and injuries eventually took their toll to leave the club frustratingly short of the play-off positions at the end of April. The 2011-12 season, proved to not be so successful and in November 2011, King and Knight were relieved of their duties with immediate effect. Ex-Charlton professional Mike Flanagan was appointed as Caretaker Manager and remained in place until the end of the season, steering the club to a respectful mid-table finish, managing thirty-three games and finishing with a win percentage of 49.12%. At the start of the 2012-13 campaign, Ex-Stansted & Redbridge boss Terry Spillane was appointed as Manager, and Mike Flanagan departed the club. The change of management, once again brought wholesale changes with the playing squad. Ex Tiptree United manager, Jody was brought to the club as Terry’s Assistant Manager. After a fantastic and unbeaten start to the season, the club found themselves at the top of the table but an incredible run by eventual Champions Grays Athletic meant Maldon had to settle for a place in the play-offs – Terry’s side remained unbeaten until Boxing Day, when they lost away from home against local rivals Heybridge Swifts. Disappointment came in the play-off final however when they lost a two goal lead to draw with Thamesmead Town, who thenwent on to win the final,on penalties.

After a disappointing end to the previous season, Terry Spillane oversaw more wholesale changes in the playing squad, including the departure of Assistant Manager, Jody Brown. Despite the changes, Maldon finished in ninth position with seventy-six points, winning twenty-one games. More changes to the playing staff, resulted in poor start to the 2014-15 season, and the club parted ways with Spillane in September 2014, with Chairman, Ed Garty takeover as Caretaker Manager, for three games. At the end of September 2014, Alan Kimble was appointed as manager and remained in charge for the remainder of the season, however the side struggled and more changes in the playing staff occurred. Maldon finished the season in nineteenth place with only forty-nine points. During the 2014-15 season, Media Officer at the time, Richard Buckby ran a competition for supporters to vote for a club nickname, with the options The River Boys, The Marshmen, The Mudmen and The Jammers available. The vote took place in January 2015 and was featured on National Radio station, TalkSport, with the The Jammers winning the vote with over 50% and being confirmed as the clubs new nickname. Following the completion of the 2014-15 season, the club linked with Colchester United and the two clubs formed close ties, which resulted in ex Ipswich Town midfielder, David Wright being appointed as First Team Manager. Wright remained in charge until December 2015 as he was appointed Assistant Manager of Colchester United. Liam Bailey took charge of the First Team on

a temporary basis, only managing one game, which finished four-all against Tilbury on Boxing Day in 2015. Moving into 2016, exLeiston Manager, Steve Ball was appointed First Team Manager and steered the club to a respectable finish in the league table climbing to seventh place, only missing out on the play-off places by nine points. In the closed season, a change of Management at Colchester United saw Steve Ball appointed as their Assistant Manager, leaving his position of Maldon & Tiptree Manager as a result. Ex-Manchester City midfielder, Kevin Horlock was then appointed as First Team manager ahead of the 2016-17 campaign and for the majority of the season, the Jammers sat at the top of the table before slipping away to finish in second place. Horlock’s side managed to reach the play-off final, however lost to Thurrock one-nil. The following campaign was not quite as successful for Horlock, with Maldon finishing just outside the play-off places in seventh place, with sixty-nine points. After managing 112 games, Kevin Horlock departed in the closed season and was replaced by ex-Colchester defender, Wayne Brown. In Brown’s first season in charge, the 2018-19 season, the Jammers finished in second place and reached the play-off final, but lost on penalties against local rivals, Heybridge Swifts. The 2019-20 season was one to remember for the club, but for the right and wrong reasons. The club achieved great things in the Emirates FA Cup. Having reached the First Round proper of the competition, Maldon beat League Two side, Leyton Orient away from home, taking over 600

fans to the home of The O’s, with the goals coming from Danny Parish and a superb solo goal from Jorome Slew. In the second round proper, Maldon were drawn against Football League side, Newport County with the game being shown live on National Television– with the Jammers only beaten by the League Two side, with a goal in stoppage time, with the game finishing 1-0. A record attendance of 1876 was recorded. However, the 2019-20 season will also be remembered for the wrong reasons. After impressive performances on the field, the Jammers found themselves top of the Isthmian Division One North, thirteen points clear with four games in hand, when disaster struck. With a global pandemic declared, as a result of Coronavirus, the league competition was formally abandoned on 26 March 2020, with all results from the season being expunged, and no promotion or relegation taking place to, from, or within the division. The club were denied a chance of promotion and forced to remain in the Division One North for the 2020-21 season.

ED GARTY STEPPED DOWN AS CHAIRMAN IN OCTOBER 2020 Following the disappointing end to the 2019-20 season, Wayne Brown remained in charge of the club and wholesale changes in the playing squad occurred again, with a number of the previous season’s squad securing transfers to clubs higher up the football pyramid. The Jammers were dealt a big blow in October 2020 when owner and Chairman Ed Garty stood down from his position with immediate effect, ending a challenging ten years at the helm. After a period of uncertainty for

the football club, General Manager Ron Dangerfield was confirmed as the new Chairman, with Richard Cowling taking ownership of the football club. Just like the 2019-20 season, the 2020-21 campaign was terminated with promotion and relegation denied for all the sides competing in the Division One North. However, prior to the curtailment the Jammers had reached the Emirates FA Cup First Round for the second successive season, this time losing to Morecambe 1-0 in front of the television cameras. Brown’s side also achieved their longest ever run in the Buildbase FA Trophy, eventually losing to Gloucester City. The Jammers were only able to play in five league games, finishing in third place before the season was curtailed. Heading in to the 2021/22 season, Wayne Brown remains in charge of the first team and is now the club’s longest-serving manager, holding the record for the most games managed in charge of Maldon & Tiptree Football Club.

INTRODUCING

THE JAMMERS WAYNE BROWN FIRST TEAM MANAGER

The former Ipswich Town, Colchester United, Hull City and Leicester City defender now in his third season in charge of the club. A nononsense, uncompromising leader on the pitch, the “Browny” played over 350 professional matches in a successful career spanning over 14 years and earned promotion to the Championship with the U’s before going on to play in the Premier League with Hull. Over the last few seasons, Wayne has masterminded several impressive cup runs, including reaching the FA Cup Second Round and First Round respectively in the last two seasons whilst holding an impressive league record.

WAYNE BROWN

PAUL ABRAHAMS ASSISTANT MANAGER

“Abes” has been with the club for a number of seasons now in the same role and remains Wayne’s right-hand man. After a professional playing career in which Paul made over 200 appearances and turned out three times at Wembley, he has gone on to hold roles in both a playing and coaching capacity with other non-league clubs, too.

PAUL ABRAHAMS

DAN HURWOOD FIRST TEAM ANALYST

Previously a prolific striker in the Essex County League, Dan is a vital cog in the Jammers’ management team who records and analyses our games, recording data in the process to continually improve the squad both individually and collectively.

OLLIE REARDON FIRST TEAM PHYSIO

A young physio who is moving into his second season looking after the first team. Ollie is in the early stages of his career and is gaining vital experience alongside his work in the professional game.

BEN McNAMARA

MARTYN STOKES

JOE TURPIN

An experienced shot-stopper is now in his fourth season at Park Drive, Ben has more or less been an ever-present since Wayne took charge of the first team. Australian-born, Ben has previously had spells with Dagenham & Redbridge, Braintree Town and Northampton Town to name just a few. McNamara’s leadership skills have been crucial to the side over the last three seasons.

Stokes is a central defender with a winning pedigree. Having arrived at Park Drive from Bowers & Pitsea in the 2019/20 season, Martyn is the club’s first team captain and will continue to bring an important level of experience to the side, having previously won promotion from the Isthmian League Division One North with both Brentwood and Bowers, respectively.

A dominant central defender who joined from league rivals Tilbury last season before the campaign was brought to a close due to the coronavirus pandemic. Since joining, Turps instantly became a leader among the Jammers defence and will be looking to build on his positive start to life at Park Drive.

KOJO AWOTWI

MAKHOSINI KHANYE

HARRY TAYLOR

An attacking and versatile full-back who rejoined the club in October 2020 from Welling United for his second spell at Park Drive. During the previous two seasons, Kojo was an influential figure within Wayne’s squad as the club reached the play-off final in the 2018/19 season, as well as the top of the league and the Emirates FA Cup second round last term.

Khanye, known as ‘Macca’, joined the club from Faversham Town in the summer of 2020. The defender started out at Brentford before spending time on the books of Bristol City, Erith & Belvedere, Greenwich Borough, Staines Town and Whitehawk. Macca now moves into his second season to the club, hoping to avoid the injuries that hampered his appearances last year.

Taylor is a young, but commanding, central defender who has previously been with Aldershot Town and Charlton Athletic where he was released in the summer of 2021. Supporters will recognise Harry as he has featured for the Jammers throughout pre-season.

BRADLEY McCLENAGHAN

AARON WILLIAMS-BUSHELL

LASTE DOMBAXE

Bradley is a former Leyton Orient central midfielder who was named as Orient’s 2018/19 Youth Player of the Year before joining the Jammers in the summer of 2020. He played a pivotal role in the club’s run to the Emirates FA Cup first round before losing to Morecambe. One of the team’s leaders who was an ever-present last season, he will be keen to continue his good form in 2021/22.

Williams-Bushell heads into his second season at Park Drive after impressing in the last campaign, scoring several Goal of the Season contenders. Aaron has shown his versatility whilst being at the club and will look to cement his place in Wayne’s starting eleven this term.

A fans’ favourite, tough-tackling, controlling midfielder, Laste returns for the 2021/22 season after having a short break away at Haringey Borough. In his first spell in the club, Dombaxe appeared over 50 times and was instrumental in the Jammers leading the way in the Isthmian Division One North and reaching the Emirates FA Cup second round.

SHOMARI BARNWELL

SCOTT KEMP

CHARLEE HUGHES

An experienced centre-forward who joined the club in July 2020 having previously played for the likes of Bowers & Pitsea, Grays Athletic and Great Wakering Rovers. Shomari is a fast and athletic forward who was the Jammers’ joint-leading goalscorer in last season’s short campaign.

Scott heads into his second season at Park Drive after joining from local neighbours Witham Town in 2020. He made the move having scored 14 goals in 2019/20 as Town’s captain. Comfortable across a number of forward positions, Kemp will be looking to improve upon his goals and assists tally in 2021/22.

A name all supporters will know and remember well, Charlee rejoins the Jammers after a season away from Park Drive at Wealdstone. Hughes featured heavily in the 2019/20 season when Brown’s side reached the FA Cup second round. During his first spell with the club, Charlee recorded 30 goals and is only 11 behind the club’s all-time leading goalscorer.

BRYAN IFEANYI

TYRELL LOWE

MALACHI NAPA

A young and exciting forward who arrived in August 2021 on loan from Colchester United. Bryan is set for a bright future and will look to adapt quickly to his first taste of men’s first team football. Previously, Ifeanyi was with Leyton Orient’s academy.
