IN CHARGE:
WAYNE BROWN WELCOME BACK FOR A NEW SEASON, A SEASON THAT COULD BE VERY DIFFERENT TO THE LAST ONE. I’LL GO INTO THAT A BIT LATER, BUT FOR NOW I HOPE THAT YOU HAVE STAYED SAFE OVER THE SUMMER AND ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS NEW CAMPAIGN. I have to start with the disappointment of last season, with the season being halted, (prematurely in my opinion), and deemed null and void. I feel sorry for every club across the country that felt they had a chance of promotion, but from our point of view, we were nailed on for it and were devastated not to get our reward for all the hard work everyone at the club put in. We go again, but it will be a very different proposition for us. There will be a few clubs that are putting extremely large amounts of budget into their playing squads but we aren’t one of them. With the success we had last season, we have lost a lot of good players to teams either higher up the pyramid or in our league with more money to spend. It was bittersweet to see them go – I wanted them to stay but it’s great to see them get personally rewarded for their performances and I don’t begrudge them their moves. It also means that we were doing a lot right in our recruitment and coaching over the past year or two, so we must take it on the chin but also take some credit for it.
We’ve already had three games this season, all away, with two of them in the FA Cup. It’s been pleasing to see us continue winning cup matches, with five goals scored and none conceded in our two ties so far. In the one league game we played, I felt we were the better team at Soham but couldn’t translate that into an opening league victory. Mind you, you never want to lose your first league fixture at any level, especially away from home, and we did get a point from the 1-1 draw. You never know, that could prove valuable at the end of the season. So, plenty of positives from the first three competitive fixtures, definitely something to build on going into this game against Brentwood. We have rebuilt the team over the summer and pre-season, and I’ve been pleased with what we’ve offered so far. Finally, thanks for all your support and keep up the good work over the next nine months. Enjoy the game, Wayne

MATCH ACTION: REPORT BY DAVE GARWOOD
SOHAM TOWN RANGERS MALDON & TIPTREE
1 1
SATURDAY 19TH SEPTEMBER | ISTHMIAN LEAGUE DIVISION ONE NORTH | ATT: 146 Not taking advantage of the majority of play in the first half by Maldon and Tiptree, coupled with some poor finishing in the second half by Soham Town Rangers, saw each side take just one point from season’s opening league game. There were just two changes from the previous Saturday’s FA Cup win with Bradley McClenaghan and William Cracknell starting in place of Reece Simpson and Makhosini Ryan-Khanye. An opening 15 minutes short of goalmouth action saw only two things of note: the home side’s Sam Mulready just missing contact with Sam Kelly’s through ball when close to goal and the Jammers’ Shomari Barnwell’s shot just off target. As the half progressed the visitors took more control of the play and really should have been ahead at the break, but Hamza Kaid saw his header saved just under the bar by home ‘keeper Josh Pope before the same player put in a good run to give Sam Coombes a shooting chance, only to see his effort go just over. A good passing move by the visitors then saw Barnwell sent clear down the right but he could not decide whether to shoot or centre and Pope was able to cut the ball out. Soham’s Alfie Connor then saw his 30-metre free-kick saved by Ben McNamara before the home side’s Jon

Kaye saw his 25-metre shot go just over the junction of bar and post. The home side’s chances suffered with the forced withdrawal of danger man Mulready through injury, but the visitors could not convert their possession into goals as Kaid, Scott Kemp and Barnwell seemed to just be lacking that final ball. Two breaks just before the half-time whistle saw Aaron WilliamBushell put Kemp in on goal but he shot wide, then Kaid suffered the same fate from close range down the right after Coombes had created the opening. After the lack of goals in the first half it, surprisingly, only took until the 54th minute for Maldon and Tiptree to take what, up to then, was a deserved lead. WilliamBushell started the move with a good ball out to Kemp on the left who then got down the line before crossing. Barnwell climbed well in the middle to put a deft header into the corner. The Jammers’ celebrations did not last long, though, as the home side equalised just seven minutes later when a long throw in by Callum Russell into the visitors’ penalty area saw the ball squirm loose before home defender Cameron Watson got a vital touch to force the ball over the goal line. Play started then to become more even. A good passing move by Soham down the left ended with Jake Andrews hitting just over, before a long clearance put the visitors’ Kemp almost clear on goal. The last 15 minutes saw the home side create the better chances with Russell missing two good opportunities, before Rogers saw a shot fire just wide following a good run.
JAMMERS MAKE PROGRESS IN THE FA CUP The Jammers have progressed to the second qualifying round of the FA Cup, thanks to a comprehensive win over Haverhill Rovers. With the 1-2 defeat from two seasons ago fresh in the minds of the Jammers’ management team, Wayne Brown’s men produced an impressive display to dispatch Haverhill Rovers and progress to the next round of the FA Cup. Aaron William-Bushell scored his second goal in as many games in the FA Cup on the stroke of halftime, whilst the returning Billy Cracknell scored his first goal of the season five minutes after the break. The scoring was completed by forward Scott Kemp who scored his first goal for the club from close range.
SECOND ROUND QUALIFYING DRAW The draw for the second round qualifying of the Emirates FA Cup was made on Friday 25th September, pairing the Jammers with Grays Athletic. Wayne Brown’s men will welcome Grays to Park Drive next Saturday, 3rd October. Fixtures will be played with no replays and no extra-time, heading straight to penalties where required.
BILLY CRACKNELL
The Jammers’ game away at Basildon United, originally scheduled for next Saturday, will be rearranged - keep your eyes on the club’s official website for details of the new date.

CLUB HISTORY
The re-establishment of normal life after the war saw the formation of Maldon Town FC in 1946, with their HQ at the Rose and Crown in the High Street and home venue at Sadd’s Ground on the causeway. The Mid-Essex League Division Two gave them their first league trophy that season, having finished in the runners-up spot. Now transferring their home ground to the Promenade Park and joining the North-Essex League, they once again achieved runners-up spot in this league and were also runners-up in the Essex

Junior Cup. Returning to the MidEssex Premier Division saw them lift the league title in consecutive seasons, as well as the League Cup in 1949/50 season. Success now followed them to their newlyacquired Wallace Binder ground in Fambridge Road, joining the Essex and Suffolk Border League. That season the runners-up spot was achieved again, but the major trophy that year was lifting the Essex Intermediate Cup, secured by beating a strong Leytonstone Reserves 2-1. Ex-Liverpool hero Kevin Baron then took over the management reins,
continuing the success when his teams gained the runners-up position in the Essex Intermediate Cup in 1964/65 and 1965/66. The league-winning team of 1965/66 gained them senior status, and they joined the Eastern Counties League in 1966. After six years in this league they joined the Essex Senior League, picking up the league title in 1984/85 and almost completing the double after being beaten in the final of the League Cup by Chelmsford City Reserves. Moving to the new ground in Park Drive in 1994, the club crossed the pyramid structure to return to the Eastern Counties League in 1996
under the continued management of Ben Embery and his assistant Steve Jackson. The pair were very unfortunate not to obtain promotion in their first season in the Jewson League (ECL). The club’s second year in the league proved to be a different story, though, with the team gaining promotion to the Premier Division by finishing the 1997/98 season in the runners-up position.
a new manager, Russell Tanner, after Colin Wallington had left the club to join Tiptree United. Russell brought in Dean Parrott as his assistant and the club made several major signings during the close season. Despite missing out on a play-off berth in their first campaign, the club had enjoyed a reasonable season whilst beginning to bring through a number of talented youngsters.
Year one in the Premier League saw Maldon finish in a creditable 13th position, improving that to eighth in the second year. A new era was entered under new manager Colin Wallington, finishing fourth in the club’s third year in the Premier League and looking to progress further. In 2002/03, Maldon reached the semi -final of the FA Vase losing to local rivals AFC Sudbury.
In September 2008, former Tottenham and Millwall player Stuart Nethercott was promoted from his position of assistant manager to caretaker manager following the departure of Tanner, ultimately becoming the permanent boss in due course. Stuart’s tenure lasted a year, before he was replaced by the returning Colin Wallington who hoped to bring back some of the good times to Maldon Town.
After 14 years as chairman, Bob Large decided to stand down as he felt he had taken the club as far has he could. The new chairman Mike Kirkham stated that he hoped to take the club to the next step up the ladder in a few years. In 2005/06, Maldon found themselves in the Ryman Premier League following two promotions and saw the club fighting relegation. Despite struggling for survival in the league, the club reached the final of the Thames Side Trophy, losing 3-1 to Canvey Island and also the final of the Eastern Floodlit Competition, losing on penalties 5-3 to Billericay Town. Season 2006/07 saw Maldon play in the Ryman North Division, finishing fourth, but were excluded from competing in the play-offs having not applied for promotion. The 2007/08 season started with
2009/10 saw mixed fortunes on the pitch, due in part to the large turnover of players during the period it took the new management to put together their own team. Away from the pitch, new chairman Alan Brockhouse and his committee entered into a groundshare arrangement with local club, Tiptree United. As the season progressed, the relationship between the two clubs grew stonger and showed obvious signs that a more formal amalgamation of the two clubs appeared to be on the cards. Ed Garty became the chairman at Maldon Town in 2009 alongside the running of Tiptree United and, one year later, both clubs were merged to form Maldon and Tiptree FC. Following the retirement of Colin Wallington, his assistants
Brad King and Glen Knight were promoted to joint-managers and put in charge of the club for the season under the new name of Maldon and Tiptree. Season 2010/2011 saw the new club placed in or around the play-off positions for the majority of the season. Despite another high turnover of players, the good standard of football was maintained and it was frustrating for the club to fall away in the latter stages of the season when suspensions and injuries eventually took their toll. Following King and Knight’s departure during that season, Mike Flanagan had come in and taken on the caretaker role, steering the club to a respectable mid-table position. At the start of the 2012/13 campaign, ex-Stansted & Redbridge boss Terry Spillane was appointed as manager. After a fantastic start to the season, the club found themselves at the top of the table but an incredible run by eventual champions Grays Athletic meant Maldon had to settle for a place in the play-offs. Disappointment came in the final when they lost a two-goal lead to draw with Thamesmead Town, who then won through on penalties. More recently, Kevin Horlock took charge of the Jammers between 2016 and 2017, but his endeavours failed to secure the coveted promotion. Replaced by Wayne Brown, his tenure in charge has so far seen the club finish as runners-up in the play-off final, reach the FA Cup Second Round and sit as runaway league leaders prior to the curtailment of the season following the outbreak of the coronavirus crisis in March 2020.

Football in the town of Brentwood has a long and colourful history going back to the 19th century when the original Brentwood FC reached the quarter finals of the FA Cup in 1886, where they were beaten 3-1 by the eventual winners Blackburn Rovers. In the 1950s and 1960s the town had a successful amateur club, Brentwood & Warley, who were three times winners of the Delphian League. In 1965 they turned “professional”, becoming Brentwood Town and rapidly rose to the heights of non-league football. Brentwood Town became a force in the Southern League Premier Division and produced some heroic performances in the FA Cup, reaching the third round proper in 1969-70. However, at the end of that season the club effectively folded and amalgamated with another Southern League club, Chelmsford City. The current Brentwood Football Club was founded in 1954 under the name of Manor Athletic and the first ground was at King George’s Playing Fields (Hartswood). In 1957 they moved to Larkin’s Playing Field where they played in the Romford and District League, the Southern Essex
MALDON & TIPTREE vs BRENTWOOD TOWN
Combination and the London and Essex Border League before joining the Essex Olympian League in 1967. Here they won the League Cup in 1968 and were then runnersup four years in a row. Following the demise of Brentwood Town in 1970, Manor found themselves the most senior club in the district and adopted the town name, changing from Manor Athletic to Brentwood Athletic, and then becoming Brentwood FC in 1972. In 1974 they joined the Essex Senior League. For many years there was a question mark against the club’s senior status and in 1976/77, although they were allowed to stay in the Essex Senior League, they were deprived of their senior status for a year. In that season Brentwood created history by winning the Essex Intermediate Cup in the same season as the Reserves won the Essex Junior Cup. In 1992 Larkin’s finally lost its senior status and the Club had to enter a ground sharing arrangement with East Thurrock in order to continue in the Essex Senior League. With the help of the local council Brentwood at last found a new home at The Brentwood Centre and the first game there was played on October 9th 1993.
The most famous player ever to have played for Brentwood was Jimmy Greaves who played his first match on 27th December 1975 but failed to keep his record of scoring on every debut as Brentwood lost 2-0 to Witham Town. Brentwood finally won the Essex Senior league for the first time in season 2000-01. They had previously been runners-up on no less than four occasions. The Essex Senior League Cup was won on four occasions in 1976, 1979, 1991 and 2007, and they were cup runners-up in 1984. Derrick Stittle holds the record as the league’s longest serving manager having been in charge from 1978 to 1999, one of the longest reigns in the history of English non-league football. In 1995/96, in their second season in the F.A. Vase, Brentwood reached the third round, further than any other Essex Senior League club. They also won the Harry Fisher Cup after a penalty shoot out with Fords at Barking F.C. 1996/97 saw the launch of an Under 18 side and the club now runs six youth teams from the U13 age group through to U18 in the Eastern Junior Alliance. The youth teams have been particularly successful in cup competitions and in 2014 the Under-18s reached the final of the Essex County Cup for the third season running. The start of the 1999/2000 season saw the most significant changes since the move to the Brentwood Centre in 1993, with the installation of the club’s first floodlights and the appointment of Paul Delea as first team manager following the retirement of Derrick Stittle. The floodlights meant a return to the FA Vase after a two season absence and entry into the FA Cup and FA Youth Cup for the first time ever.
upturn in the club’s fortune. In the most successful season in the club’s history Brentwood Town won the Essex Senior League treble of league title and both league cup competitions. The title was won by six points and Barkingside were beaten 4-0 in the final of the Gordon Brasted Trophy, while Romford were finally beaten in a penalty shoot out in the Essex Senior League Cup final. This success was matched off the field where a tremendous effort saw the facilities at the Brentwood Centre improved to enable the club to successfully apply for promotion to the Ryman Isthmian League. The management team of Steve Witherspoon and Amin Levitt led the team to more success 2007/08. There were good runs in both the FA Cup and FA Trophy but, despite amassing an impressive 77 league points, they finished sixth in the Ryman Division One North and just missed out on a playoff place. Owing to family commitments, Steve Witherspoon stood down at the end of the 2007/08 season, and new manager Carl Griffiths and assistant Scott Canham had to rebuild the squad after a number of that successful team moved on. Despite this, the team made a tremendous start to the Ryman League season, remaining unbeaten until mid-November, and eventually finished in third place, but were beaten by Waltham Abbey in the playoff semi-final.
2004 saw the club celebrating its 50th anniversary and there was also a change of club name, to Brentwood Town.
The start of 2009/10 season saw another change of management with the experienced Les Whitton taking over. A season of consolidation ended with a mid-table position but in January 2011 Les stood down and Steve Witherspoon once more took over and he led the team on a remarkable run that only ended with an extra time defeat in the Ryman North play-off final at Wingate & Finchley.
There was some success in 2005/06 as Brentwood reached the final of the Essex Senior League Cup, losing 2-0 to Hornchurch in a closely fought battle, but 2006/07 season saw a remarkable
The next two seasons saw a mid-table finish and for the 2013/14 season, Les Whitton returned as 1st team manager until he stood down in November. Adam Flanagan and Danny Dafter were
then appointed as joint managers and the team made good progress, picking up enough points to move them comfortably clear of the Ryman North relegation zone by the end of the season. In 2014/15, with much of the same squad from the previous season, including ten players that had progressed through the youth setup, they exceeded all expectations by finishing fourth to reach the Ryman North play-offs. The season then had a perfect ending with a penalty shoot-out win over AFC Sudbury in the semi-final and an amazing second half performance resulting in a 5-0 win against Thurrock in the play-off final, meaning promotion to the Ryman Premier for the first time. The two managers, Flanagan and Dafter, both moved on after this success and the Club appointed Dean Holdsworth as their new manager. Dean played for Wimbledon and Bolton Wanderers and had previously managed at Redbridge, Newport County, Aldershot Town and Chelmsford City. But in November 2015, Dean stood aside due to increased business commitments and the experienced George Borg was appointed as his successor. However, George also had business commitments and was quickly succeeded by Mike Flanagan assisted by Chris Smith. However, the team were relegated from the Ryman Premier Division at the end of the season as the Club began a new era in Ryman North, former Wadham Lodge manager Tony Ievoli was appointed for the 2016/17 campaign. Tony stood down in March 2017 and Craig Shipman took over as manager and steered the team away from relegation for next two season, followed by a mid-table finish in 2018/19. The 2019/20 season sees a new committee and a new manager in Ryan O’Rawe, a former Brentwood player who returned in a player/manager role. But the Club parted company with Ryan in February 2020 with Adam Flanagan returning for a second spell as manager and he continues into the 2020/21 season with a new-look squad.
