THE MANAGER ABRAHAMSPAUL05
THE START OF A NEW SEASON ALWAYS BRINGS WITH IT AN OPTIMISTIC FEEL, AND THIS CAN BE SAID OF ALL CLUBS.
NEW START, FRESH FACES, RENEWED HOPE, AND THE SUN BEATING DOWN.
On to the football and build up to the big KO. A tough start against a Tilbury side led this year by a stalwart of Essex football in Jon Coventry. Jon is vastly experienced and knows how to build competitive teams and win games of football. As a young manager (in experience not years obviously) I relish the challenge ahead. A big warm Park Drive welcome to Jon, his staff and the Tilbury committee and travelling fans.
The squad has started to take shape in recent weeks and we have packed it with familiar faces, a core from last seasons, some returning Jammers and plenty of youngsters, full of energy and a desire to learn and improve. The challenge is now to find that balance, work exceptionally hard and come back better than we delivered last season. I’m sure the new players will be introduced in time but there are definitely some new fans favourites in the Welcomemaking.
Those involved in “proper” non-league football know that there is no such thing as a closed season for a manager, club committee and the selfless volunteers. While the players bounce of the walls in Magaluf, the preparation for the coming season is already underway. Much of this is done in and around the club by the committee and volunteers who I can’t thank enough, you’re brilliant! We also welcome a new Chairman in Jerry Carter and together we look forward to taking the club forward. Also joining and welcome to Dave Blackmore our new GK coach and Liam Bowen physio.
back all and we look forward to making you proud.
LAST SEASON SEEMS A LIFETIME AGO BUT CERTAINLY LEFT US WITH MUCH TO REFLECT, LESSONS LEARNED AND PUZZLES TO SOLVE.

IN OPPOSITION TILBURY FC
Thebase.intended short break stretched to three seasons, and was then further extended by the outbreak of the First World War, in 1914. As a result, it was not until 1919/20 that Tilbury were able to resume, this time in the South Essex League. They became Champions of that League in 1921/22, and were again a force in the County Junior ranks. The big push for advancement into Senior ranks came in 1924/25. The Title was again captured, and so was the Essex Junior Cup. As a result, in the following season, Tilbury were invited to enter the Essex Senior Cup instead, which they accepted, as they realised that some good results would really aid their cause. In 1926/27, Tilbury reached the 3rd Round of the Cup, the first Junior side to do so, and also became the first Junior club to knock a Senior club out of the Cup, when they played superbly to defeat the mighty Walthamstow Avenue 3-2. During the Summer, they were granted Senior status by the Essex F.A. Disaster almost struck however. Application was made to several Leagues but, one by one, they were all rejected, and it looked as though Tilbury were doomed. At the very last moment, the Kent League stepped in and offered them a place, which was eagerly accepted. With Tilbury remaining as one of only 5 Amateur clubs in a Professional competition, it was no surprise that they found it tough going on the field of play. Tilbury F.C. now have concrete proof that they were formed in 1889, and competed in the Gravesend League from 1889/1890. With the Docks being the only employer of any size in the area, all the Players and Officials of the Club were Dockers, hence the adoption of the nickname, “The Dockers”, which still stands today.
12
The aim of the Club was to gain success at Junior level via the Essex Junior Cup, and thereby to eventually bring Senior Level Football to the Town. Tilbury soon made a name at the Junior level, with successive League championships, and an appearance in the Final of the Junior Cup in 1903/04, where they were defeated after a replay by Chelmsford Arc Works. It was to be another 5 years before they reached the Final again, in 1908/09, but this time they carried off the Trophy by defeating the County’s oldest club, Saffron Walden Town. However, at this stage, support for the club was poor. Only a couple of miles down the road, Grays Athletic were now playing in Senior ranks, and Grays Thurrock United were playing Professionally in the Southern League. Most local fans were going to these clubs, and finances for Tilbury were very tight. At the end of the 1910/11 season, the club also lost it’s home ground, and the Committee decided that the club should take a break from playing while it sought a new home

Off the field, however, the 4 seasons spent in the Kent League were a success. Tilbury enjoyed their time in the League and made many friends and contacts. It was an off-field matter, though, that led to them eventually leaving the competition. The League had expanded in size greatly since Tilbury joined, and added to the difficulty of continually crossing the Thames was the end of season fixture congestion. This meant a great many midweek matches and, with no Floodlights in those days, those games had to kick off at 4.30pm, and Tilbury nearly always had to field weakened teams due to players’ work commitments. At the end of the 1930/31 season, the Committee very reluctantly took the decision that the club would have to move on. They made an application to join the London League, one of those that had rejected them 4 years earlier, and this time were accepted. Tilbury stayed in the London League until 1939, when the outbreak of the Second World War led to the disbandment of most Senior Leagues. During that spell, they were twice 4th in the table, and once reached the League Cup Final, but were mostly to be found in the bottom half of the League Table. In September 1939, all Football was forced to return to a more local basis, due to Travel restrictions and Fuel rationing. Along with 9 other local clubs, Tilbury formed the War Time South Essex Combination. They completed the 1939/40 season in this League, but at the end of that campaign were forced to disband for the duration, when their ground was commandeered by the Army, as a site for the Anti-Aircraft Guns brought in to protect the Docks. Tilbury resumed in the London League in 1946/47, and then on a new home ground, the present Chadfields in 1947/48, and embarked upon a four season spell of much success and National recognition. They reached 2 successive Essex Senior Cup Finals, were 3 times League Runners Up, and were desperately unlucky to be knocked out of the F.A. Amateur Cup at the Quarter Final stage, when reduced to 9 fit men through injury. The proudest moment, though, came in the F.A. Cup. In 1949/50, Tilbury fought their way through to the 1st Round Proper, eventually going down 0-4 away to a Notts County side led by the legendary England centre forward Tommy Lawton. In the previous round replay, at home to Gorleston, a crowd of 5,500 had packed into St. Chad’s Road, and that is still the official Ground Record. The proceeds from this Cup run were used, a few years later, to buy the Freehold to the 13 acre site that the Ground stands on. In 1950/51 Tilbury moved into the Corinthian League. Apart from one League Cup Final, this was to be a barren 7 year spell, and at the end of that time they returned to the London League. The move into the Corinthian ranks had coincided with the gradual break up of the successful but ageing post-War side. The move back to the London League now coincided with the coming together of an extremely talented bunch of local young players, that brought great success in the coming seasons. In 1957/58, Tilbury finished 3rd in the London League, but in each of the next 4 campaigns were the undisputed Champions. On 3 occasions they also captured the League Cup. Also, in 1960/61, the Essex Senior Cup was won for the first time, when Walthamstow Avenue were beaten 4-1 (aet) in the Final, just 3 weeks after tby winning thehey had won the Amateur Cup at Wembley. 1962/63 saw Tilbury move into the Delphian League. This was to be the Winter of the “Big Freeze”, which almost totally disrupted all Sport throughout the Country for a period of almost 3 months. This was to coincide with that League’s last ever season. In 1963/64, that League joined the expanded Athenian League set up, becoming the bottom Division of a 3 Division set up. The Athenian League being the Premier Division, the Corinthian League being Division One and the Delphian, Division Two. Tilbury were inaugural Champions of Division Two, also winning the Essex Senior Cup again. 5 seasons later, they completed the climb to the Premier Division, by winning the Division One championship. 5 seasons were spent in the Athenian Premier Division before, in 1973/74, they joined the newly formed Isthmian League Division Two, which was later re-named Division One. In 1974/75, they became the first ever winners of the Isthmian League Cup, and 12 months later were the Division One Champions. 5th place in their first Premier Division season was the best Tilbury could achieve in their 5 season stay, before being relegated back to Division However,One.during that spell, in 1977/78, Tilbury enjoyed a remarkable run in the F.A. Cup, as they started in the Preliminary Round and fought their way right through to the 3rd Round Proper, before going down 0-4 away to Stoke City. The storm clouds were already forming though, and just 2 seasons later relegation followed, amid a financial crisis so severe that the Club almost died. Since then, Tilbury have found things tough. They have suffered relegation on several occasions, but have mostly bounced back fairly quickly, but the successes of previous years have never been re-captured.
13
The past 2 seasons were moderately successful, with two 11th place finishes in the League, and in 2008/09 Tilbury won the Isthmian League Cup and the East Anglian Cup, these were their first Trophies in 30 2010/2011,years.
2019/20 got off to a slow start for the Club, but once they got going they rapidly climbed up the League Table. By March, Tilbury were sitiing comfortably in 4th position, and seemed certain of a place in the Promotion Play-Offs. Then, the Covid 19 virus created a Pandemic that swept across the World, and caused the Isthmian and many other Leagues to be declared Null & Void, with all Football coming to a close.
2020/21 got off to an even better start, and Tilbury found themselves as the early season League Leaders. Once again, however, the Covid Pandemic raised it’s head. The situation across the Country deteriorated greatly and Lockdown once more came into force. As in the previous campaign, that signalled, eventually, the abandonment of the season, and denied Tilbury what seemed a near certain place at least in the Play-Offs. With all restrictions lifted from July 12th 2021, and with most of the squad retained plus one or two quality additions, the Club are hoping that fate does not intervene again, and that they can challenge for the honours.
14
In 2004/05, Tilbury finished their one season in the Southern League Division One East in rock bottom position, and were relegated to the Essex Senior League. They bounced back immediately, and earned a return to Isthmian ranks, and have managed to remain there since.
with a new Manager in Paul Vaughan, and a tie-up with South Essex College Academy, saw the Club hoping to build for the future. With an inexperienced squad, the first half of the campaign was a real struggle, and by Xmas Tilbury were in real danger of relegation. However, as he gained experience, Vaughan gradually rebuilt and reinforced his squad, and the 2nd half of the campaign saw a run of results that steered the Club to safety well before the end of the season. 2011/12 saw Tilbury greatly exceed their expectations, as Vaughan’s squad stayed in and around the promotion race all season, clinching a play-off place with a game to spare. Sadly, though, it ended in extra time defeat against Needham Market. Success spread through the club as well, with the newly formed Reserves, comprised mainly of players under 21 years old, coming second in the Essex Senior Reserve League, and winning the League Unfortunately,Cup.this level could not be maintained over the next few seasons, as Tilbury continually lost some of their better players to higher level clubs, and Vaughan was continually having to rebuild his squad. The Club’s Academy proved it’s worth in this respect, as Tilbury still managed to finish in a respectable position. In October 2014, Paul Vaughan stepped down as Manager, and the Club acted quickly to appoint player Gary Henty as the new boss, and he acted quickly to appoint former Tilbury player Danny Smith as his assistant and another ex-”Docker” George Young as Coach. Tilbury finished that season in a comfortable lower mid-table position, but showed great improvement in 2015/16, at one time being as high as 5th, on the back of a very long unbeaten run. This included good runs in both the Essex Senior Cup and F.A. Trophy, with no fewer than 3 National League sides being defeated. However, as the season entered it’s final few weeks, their poor disciplinary record came back to bite them, with player suspensions taking their toll leading to a fall down the Table to 11th. That pattern was repeated in 2016/17. The first half of the season saw Tilbury in or just below the Play-Off places, but in the second half of the campaign a dramatic loss of form of just 3 wins from 22 games saw them plummet down as low as 17th. The season was rescued in the final month, in which Tilbury went unbeaten, winning three and drawing two of the final five League matches, climbing back up to a respectable 12th position. On the cup front, Tilbury had a fine run through to the Semi-Final of the Essex Senior Cup, before going down narrowly to National South side East Thurrock Unfortunately,United.Tilbury suffered a terrible run of results in October of 2017. A heavy defeat in the F.A. Trophy brought about the resignations of manager and assistant, Gary Henty & Danny Smith, plus coach George Young. Once again, the Club turned to a former player to take over. Joe Keith returned to the club and brought in a few new signings over the next few weeks, and guided the club to a safe final position. However, this run could not be maintained, and in October of the next season, with the Club lying second from bottom, the Management Team was changed again. Marc Harrison, a former Under 16 side Manager at Tilbury, had enjoyed a very successful spell with Basildon United, and now returned to Chadfields, bringing Liam Wallace with him as his Assistant. Making several new signings, they immediately brought about a big improvement, and took the club right up to 7th place, before a final day defeat away to the Division Champions sent them back to a final 10th place finish.

It’s clear the ‘L’ word is the driving force behind a new community phenomenon about to sweep the ‘Love’, ‘Lionesses’ or ‘Legacy’, take your pick, but one thing’s for sure it’s provided the perfect fillip to the start 202223 season at all levels of the game – and Non-League clubs can take full advantage. Jon Couch FROM THE VERY MOMENT LEAH WILLIAMSON PROUDLY HELD ALOFT THE EURO 2022 TROPHY FOR ENGLAND IN FRONT OF A PACKED-OUT WEMBLEY CROWD ON SUNDAY, THE ‘L’ WORD HAS CAPTURED THE IMAGINATION OF YOUNG PEOPLE THROUGHOUT THE GRASS ROOTS GAME. 17
“The Euros has ignited something. I’d like to think people will be actively seeking to get on the pitch. That has a knock-on effect – more women get involved, become coaches, more teams. It has a massive domino effect on the whole game.”
Just hours after England’s victory parade at London’s Trafalgar Square on Monday, in front of thousands of joyous fans, new figures revealed unprecedented increases in young Brits looking to get involved. Analysis of Google search data revealed that searches for ‘football lessons’ exploded by 665% in the United Kingdom, while searches for ‘Girl’s football team’ rose by 3.167%.
The women’s affiliate of the Isthmian League club, which prides itself on its 100% fan and community ownership, was established in 2002 and is growing by the year, thanks to their Elite Pathway schemes. Lewes hit the headlines nationally in 2017 when they became the first professional or semi-professional football club to pay its women’s team the same as its men’s team as part of their Equality FC initiative. To this day, they remain the only club to issue equal pay. In last week’s NLP, we told how National League club Bromley were leading the support for the Lionesses with their aroundtheandyouthIncludingprogramme.communityextensivethesectionacademy,Ravenshave200women and girls playing each week, starting from the 4-11 year-olds Wildcats, the 12-16 year olds in The Squad, and the Bromley Belles, a fun recreational women’s side which has seen a growth in participants from 12 to 50. “I hope it has given people the taste and changed attitudes towards women playing football,” said the club’s a fulltime women and girls’ development officer, Andrea Ellis. “You’ve got to see it to believe it. Now we know young girls are seeing it. There are men wearing shirts with women’s names on the back – Williamson on the back, or [Millie] Bright. That fills my heart with joy, it’s amazing.
With the growth of the women’s game escalated to these new heights, all eyes will naturally be on local non-League clubs to help provide the platform for this new legacy to take hold. Undoubtedly, Non-League football’s most successful women’s team is Lewes, whose first team currently play in the Women’s Championship.
“The Lionesses’ historic win has undoubtedly uplifted and inspired the nation, which is only further confirmed by these findings,” said a spokesman for sports and fitness experts BarBend.
The ‘Lionesses’ stole the hearts of a nation after their nerve-jangling 2-1 victory over Germany ended England’s 56-year wait for a major trophy, watched by an estimated TV audience of 20 million. But it’s another ‘L’ word, Legacy, which has taken the euphoria of victory to a whole new level and ignited interest in the women’s game like never before.
“The sport, which is beloved by the British public, not only improves our technical capabilities but is also one of the most enjoyable sports to play, reliant on team bonding and communication. With support and admiration for the Lionesses appearing to not die down any time soon, it will be incredibly interesting to see if these figures translate into sign-ups for football lessons up and down the country.”

MALDON & TIPTREE FC CLUB HISTORY
In 2009, Ed Garty took over the ownership of Maldon Town from Michael Kirkham, whilst still in charge of running Tiptree United and installed Alan Brockhouse as Maldon Town’s new chairman. Following the takeover, Colin Wallington returned for a second spell in charge of Maldon Town, leaving his post as Tiptree United manager immediately. Colin previously managed Maldon Town from 2003 until 2007, having achieved promotion in the 2005-06 via the play-off final. Having left Maldon in 2007, Colin went on to manage Tiptree United where he achieved promotion winning the Eastern Counties Division One title in the 2007/08 season. Until the conclusion of the 2009/10 season both Maldon Town & Tiptree United played their home games at Park Drive, under a ground share Inarrangement.thesummer of 2010, Maldon Town & Tiptree United amalgamated to form, Maldon & Tiptree Football Club, under the ownership of Ed Garty. As a result of the amalgamation, Tiptree United withdrew from the Essex Senior League, resulting in the club’s last ever fixture being a 3-1 defeat against Enfield 1893 on 24 April 2010. Maldon & Tiptree took the place of Maldon Town in the Isthmian Division One North. Following the retirement of Colin Wallington, Assistant Manager, Brad King and Glen Knight were appointed as the clubs Joint-Manager. As the pair’s first managerial role, the new club witnessed wholesale changes with only a handful of players remaining who finished the season with Maldon Town and Tiptree United, respectively. The 2010-11 campaign saw the new club remain in or around the play-off positions for the majority of the season, finishing in eighth place to finish the season with sixty-three points. Despite the high turnover of players, the good standard of football was maintained and it was in the end, a disappointing end to 18

the season, for the club to fall away in the later stages of the season when suspensions and injuries eventually took their toll to leave the club frustratingly short of the play-off positions at the end of April. The 2011-12 season, proved to not be so successful and in November 2011, King and Knight were relieved of their duties with immediate effect. Ex-Charlton professional Mike Flanagan was appointed as Caretaker Manager and remained in place until the end of the season, steering the club to a respectful mid-table finish, managing thirty-three games and finishing with a win percentage of At49.12%.thestart of the 2012-13 campaign, Ex-Stansted & Redbridge boss Terry Spillane was appointed as Manager, and Mike Flanagan departed the club. The change of management, once again brought wholesale changes with the playing squad. Ex Tiptree United manager, Jody was brought to the club as Terry’s Assistant Manager. After a fantastic and unbeaten start to the season, the club found themselves at the top of the table but an incredible run by eventual Champions Grays Athletic meant Maldon had to settle for a place in the play-offs – Terry’s side remained unbeaten until Boxing Day, when they lost away from home against local rivals Heybridge Swifts. The 2019-20 season was one to remember for the club, but for the right and wrong reasons. The club achieved great things in the Emirates FA Cup. Having reached the First Round proper of theWayne Brown
resulted in ex Ipswich Town midfielder, David Wright being appointed as First Team Manager. Wright remained in charge until December 2015 as he was appointed Assistant Manager of Colchester United. Liam Bailey took charge of the First Team on a temporary basis, only managing one game, which finished four-all against Tilbury on Boxing Day in 2015. Moving into 2016, ex-Leiston Manager, Steve Ball was appointed First Team Manager and steered the club to a respectable finish in the league table climbing to seventh place, only missing out on the playoff places by nine points. In the closed season, a change of Management at Colchester United saw Steve Ball appointed as their Assistant Manager, leaving his position of Maldon & Tiptree Manager as a result. Ex-Manchester City midfielder, Kevin Horlock was then appointed as First Team manager ahead of the 2016-17 campaign and for the majority of the season, the Jammers sat at the top of the table before slipping away to finish in second place. Horlock’s side managed to reach the play-off final, however lost to Thurrock one-nil. The following campaign was not quite as successful for Horlock, with Maldon finishing just outside the play-off places in seventh place, with sixty-nine points. After managing 112 games, Kevin Horlock departed in the closed season and was replaced by ex-Colchester defender, Wayne Brown. In Brown’s first season in charge, the 2018-19 season, the Jammers finished in second place and reached the play-off final, but lost on penalties against local rivals, Heybridge Swifts.

At the end of September 2014, Alan Kimble was appointed as manager and remained in charge for the remainder of the season, however the side struggled and more changes in the playing staff occurred. Maldon finished the season in nineteenth place with only forty-nine points. competition, Maldon beat League Two side, Leyton Orient away from home, taking over 600 fans to the home of The O’s, with the goals coming from Danny Parish and a superb solo goal from Jorome Slew. In the second round proper, Maldon were drawn against Football League side, Newport County with the game being shown live on National Television– with the Jammers only beaten by the League Two side, with a goal in stoppage time, with the game finishing 1-0. A record attendance of 1876 was recorded. However, the 2019-20 season will also be remembered for the wrong reasons. After impressive performances on the field, the Jammers found themselves top of the Isthmian Division One North, thirteen points clear with four games in hand, when disaster struck. With a global pandemic declared, as a result of Coronavirus, the league competition was formally abandoned on 26 March 2020, with all results from the season being expunged, and no promotion or relegation taking place to, from, or within the division. The club were denied a chance of promotion and forced to remain in the Division One North for the 2020-21 season. Following the disappointing end to the 2019-20 season, Wayne Brown remained in charge of the club and wholesale changes in the playing squad occurred again, with a number of the previous season’s squad securing transfers to clubs higher up the football pyramid. The Jammers were dealt a big blow in October 2020 when owner and Chairman Ed Garty stood down from his position with immediate effect, ending a challenging ten years at the helm. After a period of uncertainty for the football club, General Manager Ron Dangerfield was confirmed as the new Chairman, with Richard Cowling taking ownership of the football club. Just like the 2019-20 season, the 2020-21 campaign was terminated with promotion and relegation denied for all the sides competing in the Division One North. However, prior to the curtailment the Jammers had reached the Emirates FA Cup First Round for the second successive season, this time losing to Morecambe 1-0 in front of the television cameras. Brown’s side also achieved their longest ever run in the Buildbase FA Trophy, eventually losing to Gloucester City. The Jammers were only able to play in five league games, finishing in third place before the season was curtailed. Heading in to the 2021/22 season, Wayne Brown remained in charge of the First Team and became the club’s longest-serving manager, holding the record for the most games managed in charge of Maldon & Tiptree Football Club. Midway through the 2021/22 season, Brown was appointed as interim Head Coach at Colchester United, with Paul Abrahams taking over as interim Manager. Abrahams steered the Jammers to within touching distance of the play-off semi-finals, however three defeats in the final three games saw the Jammers fall short, in 9th spot resulting in the Jammers remaining in the Isthmian Division One North for another season. At the end of the season, Ron Dangerfield announced his departure as Chairman and left the club to join Charlton Athletic as Secretary. Jerry Carter replaced Dangerfield as Chairman, joining the club from Braintree Town. Roger Stapleton was immediately appointed as the club’s vice-Chair. In May 2022, Wayne Brown departed on a permanent basis and was appointed as Head Coach at Colchester United, having managed 141 games and a win percentage of 68% and arguably the club’s most successful manager to date. After a positive spell as interim Manager, Paul Abrahams was appointed manager on 17 May 2022 following a five year term as Assistant Manager under various Managers.
