ood evening and welcome again to this virtual programme for a virtual viewing of the game.

A lot has been written over the last week about Project Big Picture, the initiative by Liverpool and Manchester United with Rick Parry to redraw English football. We were against the proposal and I made this very clear at a League 2 meeting with the EFL. On the face of it there appeared to be substantial benefit for EFL clubs. But it was necessary to drill down into the detail to see the potential pitfalls. First the proposed rescue package of £250 million was not in effect a gift from the Premier League but a payment on account of future solidarity payments. The sum would be repaid by deduction from future payments putting financial pressure on clubs further down the line. Secondly, it was proposed that in future EFL clubs would receive 25% of broadcasting income. However, the proposal would have given the big six in the Premier League the exclusive right to negotiate any new broadcasting agreement. There was already a proposal that each PL club could sell eight of their fixtures and retain the income. This would reduce substantially the potential broadcasting income so in effect we were offered 25% but 25% of an unknown amount.

ON THE FACE OF IT THERE APPEARED TO BE SUBSTANTIAL BENEFIT FOR EFL CLUBS. BUT IT WAS NECESSARY TO DRILL DOWN INTO THE DETAIL TO SEE THE POTENTIAL PITFALLS

Thirdly, it was proposed to reduce the EFL by two clubs to enable the PL to go down to 18 clubs. This was in effect the expulsion of 2 clubs to achieve this. There were other aspects, but space does not permit me to include all of them. In conclusion this was in effect a shortterm fix with long term adverse consequences. Thankfully the PL clubs unanimously rejected the Project. Common sense and the overall good of the English game prevailed. Philip

IAN HOLLOWAY THE GAFFER:

G

ood evening ladies and gentlemen and thanks for downloading the eProgramme ahead of tonight’s game against Harrogate Town. I would like to congratulate them for all the recent success they have achieved, they are a formidable opponent. I was absolutely delighted with my lads for earning seven points out of a possible nine last week - I honestly cannot remember having a better week than that after coming back from isolation. Normally you need five or six weeks to get a group ready to play at professional level but we hadn’t even seen each other for 14 days so I think the results we achieved were quite remarkable. Following our really gutsy performance at Bolton, I had to make a lot of changes to the team for Cheltenham three days later but every one of my lads are now starting to understand what they need to do. I took a bit of a risk by playing 3-4-3 and it could have back fired but I’m so pleased to say that it didn’t. I wanted to get at their back three, because not many people do as they’re so well organised. But that’s what we have to do, we have to try and hurt teams and I will try and win every game that we play. I thought our front three did really well and I was thrilled with all of them and there are signs of us becoming a really good outfit. Also, Macca’s save in the last ten minutes of the game was without a doubt a points-winning save. I asked him to be able to do that for us before the game because I knew the longer it went on, the more tired we were going to get and I needed him to be ready. We played a very, very good team in Cheltenham. They have been together a long time, enjoyed some success last year and their manager has even added to the group. So I was absolutely delighted with the spirit the lads showed and the three points.

I thought that the game at the weekend was a fantastic game of football and I was proud of my lot for having a right good go. To be honest, I thought Orient were excellent in the second half and they were unlucky not to get a penalty at the end but we’ve not had much luck ourselves with penalties either! I thought their opening goal came from some really clinical play but what pleased me was the way we reacted because it didn’t look like we took a punch. We kept going, we moved the ball around well and got ourselves back in the game through Luke Waterfall and then George Williams put us in front. I wasn’t pleased with the way we played in the second half because I thought Orient dominated it. In truth, I feel a bit for Ross Embleton because a draw would have been a fair result but we ended up nicking it. Saying that, I cannot begin to tell you how proud I am of my new lads because we have only just got this group together. I’m delighted to work with them all and let’s hope we can start to pick up some momentum after an exhausting but extremely pleasing week.

MACCA CAPTAIN’S COLUMN:

E

vening all. A lot has happened since I last wrote for the programme! A big defeat at home (via three penalties), two weeks of isolation, a week of travelling a lot of miles on the day (when in ‘normal circumstances’ we’d go overnight) and yet coming into tonight’s game we couldn’t be in a better place as a group. Maybe we were helped by Greg Howard and Sean Scannell changing the post match food from pizza to chicken wraps and jerk chicken and rice? It was a lovely treat for everyone coming back on Saturday evening!

Sometimes you need things to go against you and push you against the wall so you can show yourselves in the right light, and to be fair, I think it says a lot about the group of players and staff we have here. There weren’t any excuses - we just stuck together and showed everyone that we have ability and some real courage in our ranks. I’d love to now say it’s great to be ‘home’ in front of our fans, as there is no doubt the place would be bouncing under the lights after the week we’ve had, but I can’t, and to be honest I don’t think anyone can understand why that can’t be the case for at least a small number of supporters. However, as I said before, we don’t want any excuses as a group, so we have to make sure we back up the last week tonight in what will be a very tough test against a side who know what they do and are good at it!

THERE WEREN’T ANY EXCUSES - WE JUST STUCK TOGETHER AND SHOWED EVERYONE THAT WE HAVE ABILITY AND SOME REAL COURAGE IN OUR RANKS

Hopefully see you soon, Macca

WHO ARE YER?

Since our last game at Blundell Park, Ian Holloway bolstered his squad with his 12th, 13th, 14th and 15th signings of the season. This article takes a look at messrs Morton, Bennett, Windsor and Gomis…

KYLE BENNETT Midfielder, on-loan from Bristol Rovers JAMES MORTON

Midfielder, on-loan from Bristol City At the end of last month, Bristol City midfielder James Morton arrived at Blundell Park on a season-long loan deal.

Experienced winger Kyle Bennett joined from League One Bristol Rovers on loan until the end of the season. The 30-year-old attacking midfielder made more than 60 appearances for Rovers over the last three seasons and will certainly add bags of pace and technical ability to Ian Holloway’s squad. Prior to his time at the Memorial Stadium, Bennett helped Portsmouth win promotion from League Two in 2016-17 and establish themselves in League One.

The 21-year-old already has experience playing in League Two, after a short but successful spell on loan with Forest Green Rovers last season. The Bristol lad has been with the Robins since he was 14-years-old and is highly thought of at Ashton Gate and, shortly before his move to Blundell Park in September, he made his City debut in their 2-0 Carabao Cup win against Exeter City. Before his spell at The New Lawn last season, Morton gained first team experience on loan at Chippenham Town and Bath City in two separate spells.

Bennett also had a four year spell with Doncaster Rovers, which included winning promotion to the Championship in 2012-13, where he clocked up over 130 appearances for Donny.

Morton is primarily a deep-lying holding midfielder and his general play and passing style has led to him being described as a ‘quarterback’.

Holloway will no doubt be hoping that Bennett can find the form that made him a real fans’ favourite at Portsmouth when they won promotion from League Two only three years ago.

08

OWEN WINDSOR Forward, on-loan from West Bromwich Albion Teenage striker Owen Windsor also joins on a season-long loan from Premier League outfit West Bromwich Albion. Windsor began the campaign on fire for WBA’s U23s, scoring five goals in the opening five games of the season and the 19-year-old got off the mark for the Mariners in only his second appearance against Cheltenham Town. The former Swindon Town and Southampton youngster caught the eye of the visiting scouts during a spell with Cirencester Town in 2018-19 and subsequently signed for the Baggies, only to be loaned back immediately to the Southern League Division One South club. Last term the athletic frontman gained more experience on loan at Taunton Town but he’ll be looking to make an impact in senior football this season during his time at Blundell Park.

VIRGIL GOMIS Forward, on-loan from Nottingham Forest Last week, 21-year-old forward Virgil Gomis arrived on loan for the rest of the season from Nottingham Forest. Although the Frenchman is yet to make an appearance for Forest, he gained first team experience on loan at Braintree Town, Notts County and Macclesfield Town last term. Gomis played in the same U23s team at Forest as fellow Town loanee Danny Preston and is held in very high regard at the City Ground. The big striker wasn’t part of Ian Holloway’s squad at the weekend but he’ll be hoping to be involved tonight.

MONTEL GIBSON

IN THE SPOTLIGHT M

ontel Gibson became Ian Holloway’s third signing of the summer when the promising forward joined on a three-year deal.

The 22-year-old enjoyed a memorable campaign with Halesowen Town of the Southern League Central Division One last season, one he describes as being his “best season in mens football” yet. Gibson plundered 31 goals in 46 games as the Yeltz challenged for automatic promotion and reached the semi-finals of the FA Trophy. His exploits in front of goal caught the attention of Ian Holloway, who offered the Birmingham-born frontman the chance to return to the professional game. A teenage Gibson initially signed for Notts County in 2016 after dazzling in the Midland League Premier Division and made a handful of appearances for the Magpies towards the tail end of the 2015-16 season. The young forward spent much of 2016-17 out on loan at Romulus, Barwell, Hednesford Town and Sutton Coldfield Town but did manage a cameo in County’s 2-0 League Two defeat to the Mariners - an appearance which ironically ended up being his last for County and in the Football League. Following his release from Meadow Lane, Gibson was snapped up by Ilkeston Town and began to find the back of the net regularly. However, the youngster chose a move closer to his native Birmingham when he joined Redditch United in March 2018. Around 18 months later, Gibson switched to divisional rivals Bedworth United before teaming up with Paul Smith’s Halesowen Town for the start of the 2019-20 campaign. The hardworking frontman scored his first goal for the Mariners in our Football League Trophy victory against tonight’s visitors earlier in the season and struck an injury time winner from the spot in Saturday’s impressive victory at Leyton Orient.

ood evening to everyone reading this eProgramme ahead of tonight’s game against Harrogate Town. Our visitors have made a great start to their first ever season in the EFL and as we have witnessed already when we played them in the EFL Trophy game, they are very difficult opponents and we will need to be at our best to get the three points.

MARINERS TRUST

It is so frustrating that there will still be no crowd allowed into Blundell Park to cheer the team on and like many other people we are very confused as to why socially distanced crowds cannot be allowed. It seems to us much safer than other social situations. We continue to campaign for the return of crowds through the FSA and hopefully something can be agreed when it is debated in Parliament on November 9th. Although we will not have any supporters in the ground tonight, some, both past and present, will be represented with their “Face in the Crowd” boards. We would like to thank everyone who has done this so far. As well as being a bit of fun, out of the £25 cost of each board, £12 goes to the club. At the end of the season, or when full crowds return, the board can be collected and if required it will be signed by at least one player. If you would like to take part, click here. As long as it is not offensive, the image can be of anything and we have already had some interesting purchases. As well as yourself, you can do one for a loved one, best friend or even your pet, so get those creative juices flowing! We have been talking to the club about making sure the loyalty shown in these difficult times by season ticket holders, and indeed all supporters, is not forgotten. Rest assured, the club are very supportive of this and you will see a number of initiatives in the coming weeks starting with a free copy of the digital programme for each home game. We have also agreed that we will do a draw each game for Season Ticket holders over 16 to have the chance to be ball retrievers and also a draw for a free signed shirt and ball. Obviously iFollow is a key part of this and after some initial issues the quality now seems much better, but if you have any issues at all please let us or the club know and we will feedback. A reminder that clubs receive approximately £8 for each match pass purchase and home teams retain all the receipts from their own supporters and the first 500 from the away club who then retain any above this level. For example, for Bolton away, we had 978 subscribers and so we retain the revenue for 478 which is worth around £3,824 net. At a time with little other revenue, this is a vital source of income and so by buying passes it is a great way of supporting the club.

WE HAVE BEEN TALKING TO THE CLUB ABOUT MAKING SURE THE LOYALTY SHOWN IN THESE DIFFICULT TIMES BY SEASON TICKET HOLDERS, AND INDEED ALL SUPPORTERS, IS NOT FORGOTTEN

Talking about little revenue, this week’s news about “Project Big Picture” was concerning to say the least. As well as the content, which we will cover more in the Carlisle programme, the process is really concerning. The whole lack of transparency proves to us that no one at the top of football governance, whether it be EFL, FA or Premier League, can be trusted and the promised review by the government or an independent body is desperately needed. This article on the FSA website provides a good understanding of the issue. Meanwhile the clock is ticking and the need for a rescue package for League 1 and 2 clubs is getting more urgent by the week. Keep the faith and UTMM! The Mariners Trust Board

In 2010, Kerry joined Hinckley United and made 94 appearances during a two-year spell before leaving for Conference Premier side Tamworth, where over his sixty-four appearances with the Lambs, he helped them survive in the Conference Premier.

Fallowfield departed at the end of his first season at The Environment Stadium to spend a year in the National League with North Ferriby, but was given the chance to return to Harrogate in May 2017.

Six years ago, the 32-year-old signed for Harrogate and soon developed into a fan favourite at The Environment Stadium with his creative all-action displays in the centre of midfield winning many admirers. MARINERS MEMORIES:

GHOUL FEST 18 years ago next week, Blundell Park was witness to a (defensive) massacre a few days before Halloween. Tom Hardy shares his memories of the game dubbed as ‘Fright Night’.

Halloween is commonly associated with things such as pumpkins, costumes and, of course, trick or treating. On 29 October 2002, fans who arrived at Blundell Park for the Mariners’ clash against Burnley were certainly in for a treat... and a defensive horror show. The ground was filled with people of all ages wearing a variety of spooky costumes in an effort to win the “best dressed” competition. I can’t remember exactly what the prize was, but I didn’t win it. My priorities were on keeping the cold out instead and clearly a rather poor attempt consisting of a mask, black hoodie and matching

THE SECOND HALF GOT UNDERWAY, & NO ONE IN THEIR RIGHT MIND COULD HAVE THOUGHT WE WERE IN FOR ANOTHER ACTION PACKED 45 MINUTES LIKE WE HAD JUST WITNESSED. LUCKILY, WE WERE 30

tracksuit bottoms failed to impress the makeshift judges. I wasn’t too fussed, mind you, as I didn’t really fancy being paraded on the pitch like cattle at an auction. Anyway, back to the football. Town went into the fixture on the back of a 4-1 hammering by Wolves and Paul Groves’ side were struggling to convert their chances, hitting just 10 goals in their opening 16 games. What’s more, they’d only won once at home, beating Ipswich 3-0. So, on a wintry Tuesday night in Cleethorpes, you couldn’t have blamed anyone for lacking optimism going into the match. However, three minutes in and there was reason to celebrate as loanee Steve Kabba – a rare positive from what had been a pretty dreadful start to the campaign – slotted home his fifth goal of the season. This early strike proved to be a sign of things to come. Gareth Taylor equalised in the 22nd minute, only for Steve Livingstone to put Town back in front with a well-placed header five minutes later. It was Livvo’s first goal since fracturing his skull against Derby two months earlier – a game which was shown live on Sky Sports. What a distant memory those days seem.

Burnley came back with a bang and tied the game once more through Ian Moore. But this had little significance as Kabba instantaneously grabbed his second to once again put Grimsby in the ascendancy. Surely there couldn’t be any more goals before half-time? Well there were. Two in fact. Stuart Campbell managed to break the pattern of the contest to give Paul Groves’ men a two-goal lead, but a leaky defence conceded in first half stoppage time as Robbie Blake fired home. 4-3 at the interval and it was Town who were ahead. It certainly wasn’t a game to remember for either backline but this dodgy defending, coupled with some smart finishing, had made for an extremely entertaining encounter. Despite jumping up to celebrate four times, the ritual half-time sausage roll was desperately needed to warm the hands as much as anything due to the worsening wind blowing off the North Sea. Being a stick-thin 10-year-old lad, the temperature felt that much worse. It was a good job I had my Halloween costume on. The second half got underway, and no one in their right mind could have thought we were in for another action packed 45 minutes like we had just witnessed. Luckily, we were. Just like the first half, the ball found the back of the net just minutes in. Except this time it was the visitors who struck, with Taylor grabbing his second to draw the Clarets level.

But as we all know, nothing’s ever easy as a Grimsby fan. A nerve-wracking finale was set up when Blake converted his second, this time from the spot, with seven minutes remaining to make it 6-5 after Barnard had brought down substitute Dimitris Papadopoulos. Probably not something to shout about, but I remember vividly the moment Papadopoulos was brought off the bench. He was met by chants from the Pontoon of “Who the f***ing hell are you?” along with a number of sarcastic whistles as his name was announced on the loudspeaker. Little did the Mariners faithful know, the Greek striker would go on to win the European Championships with his country just two years later. Town managed to hold on. Just. An 11-goal thriller and a massive three points for the Black and White Army as they attempted to steer clear of relegation from Division One. There were no complaints about ticket prices following this game, which certainly proved value for money for the 5,620 fans who braved the Arctic temperatures to witness a real ghoul-fest.

A collection of memories from Grimsby Town supporters

Town were living on the edge, and supporters grimaced every time Burnley got anywhere near Danny Coyne’s area. But defender Simon Ford looked to have settled things, as his header from Darren Barnard’s corner again reasserted the home side’s two-goal advantage.

Every football fan has a favourite game. It might be a historic cup victory against a top flight club, or maybe a hard-fought draw against a fierce local rival. Perhaps it’s when the occasion transcends the whole 90 minutes?

Whatever the game, the performance or the result, they’re all akin to one another.

Twenty-three contributors to the club’s matchday programme ‘The Mariner’ in the 2013/14 season reminisce about matches that stand out in their memories, and reveal the reasons why they’re so special to them.

My Favourite Game - A collection of memories from Grimsby Town supporters

Yet again, an early strike proved to be the catalyst of another goal-filled period of football. After 55 minutes, Mark McGregor handled Livingstone’s cross and Alan Pouton blasted the resulting penalty straight down the middle after a long Roberto Carlos-esque run-up.

IT CERTAINLY WASN’T A GAME TO REMEMBER FOR EITHER BACKLINE BUT THIS DODGY DEFENDING, COUPLED WITH SMART FINISHING, HAD MADE FOR AN EXTREMELY ENTERTAINING ENCOUNTER

From last-gasp winners to victory at Wembley (the original one), they document some of the glorious moments that made them proud to be a Mariner.

THE JOY OF SIX MIDDLESBROUGH IRONOPOLIS 2 - 6 GRIMSBY TOWN 11TH NOVEMBER 1893

Not only was this the first time that Town scored six in a league match, but what a fabulous name for a club – Ironopolis! Tommy McCairns – the first Mariner to play for England - was on the score sheet with just two. I say just two because... read on!

GRIMSBY TOWN 7 - 1 LEICESTER FOSSE 11TH APRIL 1896

OK, so Town didn’t score six, on this occasion, but seven. However, the six comes in the form of six goals all from Tommy McCairns! Fosse finished mid-table, so weren’t the pushovers people might have assumed. Indeed, Town beat them five days earlier too, at a time when just four points separated the clubs. Town ended up third in Division 2, and Tommy’s record stood unbeaten in the entire division for 60 years! But Tommy wasn’t the only Town player to score six in a game...

GRIMSBY TOWN 8 - 3 LINCOLN CITY 7TH NOVEMBER 1960

This time Ron Rafferty put six past the hapless opposition! Second highest scorer all-time for the Mariners, Ron is a legend in his own right, having scored at least 19 goals in each of his seasons playing for the Mariners and top scoring with 34 in a season, and netting 152 times in League and Cup. The other scorers in the game versus Lincoln by the way were Johnny Scott and Derek Williams.

The Mariners were electric from the off, but against the run of play, Wimbledon scored after 22 minutes. Kev Kilmore pulled one back, and Town should have had the game wrapped up by half-time – but went in at the break, drawing 1-1. George Kerr worked his usual halftime magic, and within four minutes of the restart the Mariners had gone from 1-1 to 4-1! They added another two and were cruising at 6-1, but Wimbledon pulled 2 back late on. At left back for Town was current physio and Town legend, Dave Moore. For more on this match, see Rob McIlveen’s excellent account of the season “Champions!” available from the Mariners Trust.

GRIMSBY TOWN 6 - 2 WIMBLEDON 23 MARCH 2002

Town hit another six against Wimbledon, this time at BP, in 2002. This match is remarkable for two Town players each scoring a hat-trick. Michael Boulding opened for Town just after the half hour, and Alan Pouton doubled the score on half time. Pouton then added his second in the 72nd minute, but three goals in three minutes, including an Alan Pouton penalty finished the scoring for Town.

GRIMSBY TOWN 6 – 5 BURNLEY 29TH OCTOBER 2002

Labelled as “Fright Night” by the Town backroom staff, little can they have foreseen how accurate that description was to turn out! Like two heavyweights slugging it out in the middle of the ring, Town and Burnley, hit one another with everything they had got. Steve Kabba opened for Town after just three minutes, then Livvo (28), Kabba (31), Stuart Campbell (36). The half time score was a “fright” at 4-3. Alan Pouton (pen) 56, and finally centre half Simon Ford netted on 72 minutes!

GRIMSBY TOWN 6 - 2 MANCHESTER UNITED 14TH NOVEMBER 1936 Always worth a mention when a lot of goals are put past United, if only to remind ourselves that you’re only a big club on a temporary basis! Cyril Lewis scored a hat-trick, with Bestall, Glover (of course!) and Charlie Craven making up the rest. That season Town scored sixes against Preston NE, and Sunderland, whilst they notched five against Middlesbrough, Manchester City, Sheffield Wednesday, and in the FA Cup against Walsall!

GATESHEAD 1 - 6 GRIMSBY TOWN 23RD AUGUST 2014

WIMBLEDON 3 - 6 GRIMSBY TOWN 29TH MARCH 1980

As Town marched towards the Championship of Division 3 in the 79-80 season, they headed to Plough Lane, hoping to keep the chasing pack behind them.

The club’s unofficial historian, John Kirk, takes a look back at eight occasions when the Mariners put six past their opponents.

RON RAFFERTY PUT SIX PAST LINCOLN 50 YEARS AGO

36

Feelings were still a bit raw at the start of the 2014-15 season. Town had lost 3-1 in the playoffs semis at Gateshead in what turned out to be their final match of the previous season, but both Sam Hatton and Scott Neilson had been sent off. Another trip to Gateshead came round in just the fourth match of the new season. Gateshead started the rout themselves with a handy own goal after just six minutes. Scott Neilson, ironically, added the second after 14, and the fourth straight from the half-time break. Lennell John-Lewis scored the third after 42 minutes, Craig Disley the fifth after 84, and then “Shop” finished off right on the stroke of time! Unbeatable? Not quite. The very next match Town put SEVEN past Alfreton! Still playing from those games… Macca, of course!
