CHAPLAIN'S CHAPTER

Young Farmers have been very busy since Christmas, with even more parties and competitions, whilst clubs have also been enjoying an abundance of activities and raising lots of money for some great charities. Since the reports have been sent out to me our lives have unexpectedly changed a bit with the Coronavirus outbreak. It is disappointing not to be able to meet in the usual ways, and our plans and events have been cancelled for the time being, but hopefully it will soon be over. In the meantime, stay safe, keep positive and I look forward to seeing you all again soon.

DUNMOW

YF CLUB REPORT

Hey everybody,

LIV BEER WE KICKED OFF THE YEAR WITH OUR ANNUAL CHRISTMAS TREE COLLECTION, RAISING OVER £1,000 FOR EVIE’S ANGELS. EACH YEAR WE DO THIS AND EACH YEAR WE RAISE A GREAT AMOUNT OF MONEY

04

Dunmow have been very busy since my last report! We’ve had meetings, parties, competitions, balls and so much more! First of all we kicked off the year with our annual Christmas tree collection, raising over £1,000 for Evie’s Angels. Each year we do this and each year we raise a great amount of money. Shortly after was our club’s efficiency meeting held at the Saracens Head in Dunmow, which had a great turnout and gave us all some more insight into the plans for Dunmow over the next six months. In January we had the Golden Welly Awards and followed this with the Cross Country Run - considering we all had hangovers it was quite an achievement! We also had a great show for the Public Speaking competition at the Country Building. Dunmow have had some great socials over the last three months or so, some of these include the tour around Resting Pets at Woods Farm, Weathersfield Fire Station tour joint with Ashdon and Saffron Walden,

two joint socials with Ongar Young Farmers for a game of laser tag and a tour round Humphreys, pancakes (!) and so many more. Throughout all of this Dunmow was also organising the ‘Dunmow Do Disney’ party. We had a fab night and a great turnout with over 120 attendees. Ahead of the Tug of War Fun Day on 15th March, we had been training every Monday at the Leeders, with a full girls and boys team and even getting some new members on the rope! And with all of our 70th Ball preparation underway, there had been lots to look forward to. We have also got our club exchange coming up where we are exchanging with Harleston Young Farmers from Norfolk and have got lots planned for that weekend as its Prelims, and it’s even better this year as our own members Molly Lenton and Sara Skinner are organising it!

Love From Liv x

Halstead have been busy these last few months with joint socials, new members nights and county events. In December we did our annual Christmas tree sales, raising money for our chosen charity, Cancer Research UK. It was a very cold day but we had a lot of fun! Over the Christmas period many of our members went to other club events such as Wix valleys club night which was enjoyed by many. We started off the new year with our Christmas tree collections, we had four groups out and about throughout the whole day so managed to raise more money for our charity. Throughout January, we did public speaking training for the upcoming public speaking competition. It was lovely to see so many members taking part and others going to support. Many of our members had never done public speaking but they all smashed it! We have been doing joint socials with Ashdon and Saffron Walden as well as Wix, including nights like Jump Street, Shakes and Udders meet and a learning and development talk by Tom Leeder. We have more joint socials coming up with other clubs and we love trying new things. Our members have been attending many more events; we enjoyed feeling like children again at the Kids Kingdom Party and we tested our knowledge when attending Southminster’s quiz night!

ELIZA DOE

We have a very full diary for the next few months full of our own socials and events as well as events all around the county. Coming up we have our Charity Race Night, raising money for Cancer Research UK, and many more events hosted by county and other clubs which we look forward to.

Cheque presentation after carolling

JACK GARWOOD WITH A FANTASTIC PROGRAMME, WE’VE HAD A SOUTHMINSTERBASED QUIZ, DARTS AND POOL EVENING, CURRY NIGHTS, TALKS FROM OUR CHARITIES, STAR-GAZING AND BELL-RINGING TO NAME BUT A FEW

Well hello, one and all. As I sit here at this old typewriter looking out upon a somewhat soggy Dengie, I’m looking back fondly at the wild winds I spoke of last time and realising how much wilder they’ve been of late! So what have we been up to since my last report? Plenty, is probably the best word. We had a busy month of festivities celebrating Christmas with a meal, trips to the local and, of course, a spot of carolling to our long-suffering subscribers. Thank you to them for supporting us and helping to raise a marvellous £500. We then saw the new year in with a pub crawl around Southminster to help support local businesses. We certainly haven’t let the new decade slow us down. With a fantastic programme, we’ve had a Southminster-based quiz, darts and pool evening, curry nights, talks from our charities, star-gazing and bell-ringing to name but a few, with the quiz being a club favourite with plenty of laughs and a fair bit of reminiscing throughout the evening. It turns out that being the longeststanding member isn’t always a help, as Luke Oliff found out!

A spot of carolling for our subscribers

a good job you’re going to keep being asked! Thank you to everyone that came along and supported, you helped us to raise over £200. A week later we decided a pub crawl was in order, though as per usual we decided to change it up a little by making it a threelegged crawl. It was a fantastic evening and we’d like to thank everyone for coming. As I sit writing this we are looking forward to a packed couple of months of exchange, prelims and, dare I mention, a little show we’ve got coming up. If you’re reading this and ever fancy coming along to a Southminster meeting then you can find us on Facebook and Instagram or contact Lizzy on 07956 827618 or southminsteryfc@ gmail.com Hopefully we see you all soon, until next time.

DODGEBALL NIGHT IS ALWAYS A WELL-ATTENDED CLUB EVENT AND GIVES US ALL A CHANCE TO GET JUST A LITTLE COMPETITIVE!

Hi everyone! Ash & Saff have been really busy already this year. We started off with our annual Christmas tree collection and we managed to collect over 500 trees in just one day, raising over £4,000 which will go to Alzheimer’s Research UK. That’s a massive achievement, so thanks to our wonderful club members and subscribers for helping and to the Cargill family for letting us use their farm as a base once again.

LUCY HITCHCOCK

We have had a fab range of club Tuesday evenings this quarter, all organised by our Programmes Rep, Rebecca Vrylandt. We had a talk from the milkshake company ‘Shaken Udder’ who brought samples for us to taste and spoke about their difficult journey establishing the business. We also had the ‘Country Food Trust’ visit us and talk about how they provide their freshlyshot game to homeless charities for free. Other meetings include pub socials, tug of war practice, a fire station visit with Dunmow, pancake making and the sex education talk at County. The club have also enjoyed the parties so far this year, especially the Golden Welly Awards which was fab to see return after a few years absent! Also, thanks to Dunmow on their fab Disney-themed Valentines Day party which was, as always, very messy! Members have taken part in the cross country running event held at the Willets which was a very muddy affair, but a really fun morning. We also took part in the

public speaking competition. We didn’t win anything but it was great to see some of our new members take part in what is always a very nerve-racking day! Last, but certainly not least, Ash & Saff held their 75th Anniversary Ball which was kindly held by the Westerhuis family - a last minute change as it was meant to be at the Gemmill’s in Stansted but, due to the horrendous weather, the field was waterlogged! Despite this, the evening was a great success! Everything looked fab for our VE Day-themed event. The food was wonderful, followed by a game of Heads and Tails and an auction which made a brilliant amount of money for the Herts & Essex Air Ambulance. Dancing and many drinks followed to complete a terrific evening held for a very worthy charity. Thank you to everyone for coming and to the Ball Committee for doing a fantastic job under the difficult circumstances!

Hi everyone. Maldon has had a great start to 2020. Before the new year we had our Christmas party on the 21st December where many of our members had a great evening and we hope that those that came along did too. We also hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

NICOLA GILBEY

We kicked off 2020 by having our efficiency meeting and a talk from one of our charities that we are supporting, the Anthony Nolan Charity, at the Blue Boar in Maldon High Street. It was a very interesting presentation and a real insight into how we can all help someone by doing the smallest of things. It really highlighted how our help in raising money aids to save someone’s life. On January 21st we had a tour around the Aldi Distribution Centre in Chelmsford and enjoyed a brilliant turnout with a mix of both members and subscribers attending. On Saturday 26th January many of our members attended the Golden Welly Ball. Everyone had a good time and it was great to see the return of the event. We had a tug of war taster session on January 28th where our newer members could experience the sport and were given information of the dates when we train, so that they could join the team. Many joined in on the night and went on to enjoy training every week to build up for the competition on Sunday 15th March. The following week, on February 4th, we had an interesting talk at the Blue Boar from the local Beekeeping Association on beekeeping and the production of honey. Although we didn’t get to see any bees, it was still a great meeting! Maldon have been trying to publicise the club, so we had our second new members’ night on February 11th, held by our new members representative. This was another successful night and everyone had a good laugh. We tested who was better, Ernest Doe or Hosplant and everyone had great fun watching them shout “MOOOOOO!” while trying to make the

other person laugh. In the end it was Hosplant who could MOOOO the best! On Friday 14th February Maldon members went to Dunmow’s Disney party where everyone had a great time, although there may have been some questionable outfits! Well done to the Maldon secretary for organising the Sex Education talk that was held at the County Building. There was a great turnout and people found it very interesting learning new information and came up with lots of different questions to ask. Another brilliant meeting was had at the Escape Rooms in Maldon. We split into three groups and each had their own room. Every group luckily managed to escape, although some cut it very close with only seconds to spare! On March 3rd we had a lambing talk at Butterfield’s Farm by Sam Carr. Everyone loved the lambs and many were tempted to take them home. On Sunday 8th March Maldon took part in the football and netball competition. Well done to all those who played, and especially to all the boys who achieved second place. Looking forward we had been due to have our Charity Clay Shoot on Sunday 26th April at Layer Marney Towers and on Sunday 3rd May would have been the Show Jumping competition at Beechwood Equestrian Centre, where we would have had horse and no-horse jumping competitions, making it an enjoyable day out for everyone. For more information on our events, please look at our Facebook page or contact our chairman or secretary. Please support us by spreading the word and sharing our page, so we can help to benefit the lives of those in need by raising as much as we can for the Anthony Nolan Charity.

Hi everyone, I hope you’re all well and staying safe during these difficult times. I’d just like to start off by taking you back to a fundraising event we took part in at the end of last year. We attended G&J Barrons Farm Open Day, organising the car park, running the trailer rides, cooking the BBQ and running other activities on the day. From this, we managed to raise over £500 for our charities this year, which are RABI and ABF The Soldiers Charity. Massive thanks to everyone at G&J Barrons for letting us attend and raise some money for our charities.

ERIN THOMAS

We also attended the East Essex Hunt on New Year’s Eve, which was a great experience for all members who attended. It was something that doesn’t occur very often, so it was great to have the opportunity to follow the hunt throughout the day. As every club will tell you, we have had an extremely busy few months! Since we last spoke, some of our members attended the Golden Welly awards night hosted by county, with one of our members winning an award for “Member Most Likely To End Up In A Ditch After A Night Out”... congratulations, Lucy B! Two of our braver members took part in the 5k cross country running event at the end of January, so very well done to Troy and Suzanne. The following week saw three of our members compete in public speaking, coming in second place for the intermediate section great job Will, Belle and Troy! In terms of club nights, we saw over twenty members bouncing around at Jump Street followed by a night of archery. This was a new activity for the club which proved extremely successful, so we would definitely recommend it to other clubs looking for ideas. We were also treated to a tour round H.J. Fairs & Sons Farm, allowing us to look at some of their machinery and learn about the many varieties of crops they grow. It was a very informative night for our members learning about what it’s like to work on a farm and growing these unusual, yet wonderful, crops! We’d like to say a massive thank you to Chris Barron for taking the time out to give us this tour. On Saturday 28th February, we all wrapped

12

ESSEX YOUNG FARMERS | SPRING 2020

up in our waterproofs and headed out to complete our annual Muck Run in aid of the Tom Bowdidge Youth Cancer Foundation. This saw our members knocking on doors and shovelling muck for donations towards the charity, all whilst battling with the rain and wind… which, naturally, cleared up as soon as we had finished! It was all worth it, though, as we managed to raise over £400! Richard Bowdidge, founder of the charity, visited us the following Monday to give our members an insight into where the hard-earned money would be spent. We also presented him a cheque from last year’s event. On the same day as our Muck Run, we decided to join the bandwagon and give the “Febru-dairy” challenge a go… let’s just say some of our members clearly have a lot more experience at downing drinks than others! At March’s exec meeting, Colchester YFC we’re awarded Club of the Month, for the hard work of our chairman, Ollie, and the exciting programme we had during February. At the most recent competition, four of our male members took part in the five-a-side football and managed to come in first place! We were all over the moon, because Colchester have always been known as one of the least sporty clubs in the county, so congratulations boys! Huge thanks to Zak from Halstead for stepping in and making up the team! Unfortunately, we have had to cancel our Pub Crawl and Road Run due to the Coronavirus outbreak, however our members have still been getting together via video call at least twice a week for a catch up/quiz night/drinking games night! We have also posted two videos on our Facebook page of our members completing the “Loo Roll Challenge” and lip syncing to “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life”, so do give them a watch if you need a giggle! Hopefully this will all blow over soon so we can get back to the pub! That’s all for now, thanks for reading and stay safe.

YF CLUB REPORT I’m writing the spring report, but it doesn’t feel spring-like yet unfortunately. Hopefully by the time you’re reading this the weather will have cheered up a bit, and everything might have finally dried out! Wix had a successful series of events over the Christmas period, notably with our carol singing afternoon for subscribers which was very well-attended, so thank you to everyone who came. For all the party go-ers we also had our annual party at Silk Road in Colchester.

THE NUMBER OF PHOTOS THAT APPEARED ON SOCIAL MEDIA THE FOLLOWING WEEK OF EVERYONE CUDDLING A LAMB DIDN’T GO UNNOTICED!

Moving in to the new year, Wix have had a very varied first few months of events. January seemed to be a pretty long month and we managed to get all sorts of things in. We had some great talks at the Haywain from both Lewis Rabett, all about the world of auctioneering and, later in the month, Ed Ford joined us to thank us for our donation last year and to tell us all about the excellent work that Forage Aid do. On January 23rd we headed to the Hutley’s for a good evening of Lambing Live. This is always a favourite, and the number of photos that appeared on social media the following week of everyone cuddling a lamb didn’t go unnoticed! Thank you to the Hutley’s for having us again. Our last club night of the month was spent playing badminton, which really brought out some people’s competitive side! Hopefully we didn’t put off too many members of the public

from returning to Clacton Leisure Centre in the future! In complete contrast to January, February seemed to fly by. We started the month with a social at the Bell Inn, Thorpe, which was followed by an evening of horse riding. Reggie provided everyone with some great entertainment on his horse to the theme tune of Wallace and Gromit. On to March and we had a fantastic talk from one of our chosen charities - the Colchester and Ipswich Hospital Charity. This year we are raising money for the Collingwood Centre, which is the new cancer centre at Colchester Hospital. We heard from one of the nurses at the centre about the difference the new facility is making, and also from Dayna, a Wix member, who has been supported by the staff at the centre. In addition to the money we are raising this year as a club, Dayna will also be doing a sponsored sky dive to raise additional money for the centre. Wix are currently busy getting everything ready for our upcoming Spring Ball and, as per usual, we’ve had absolutely fantastic support from all our subscribers, we can’t wait to see you there! COUNTY REPORTS

COUNTY CHAIRMAN BEN SELL

G

ooday, folks! How’re you all getting on? It doesn’t seem like five minutes since I was writing my last report, but time flies when you’re having fun, as they say!

We’ve certainly been flat to the mat with various events and whatnot, and it’s been lovely to sense a real buzz within EYFC! I s’pose really I should be saying I hope you all had a good Christmas and a happy new year, shouldn’t I? Even though it seems like a distant memory now, I hope you all had good’uns! Wix, Vallies was a bloody awesome night from what I remember! I’ll leave that one there I think, but let’s just say... I had a Doombar! I’ll let you guys chat about what a successful evening it was, but thank you very much for having us! We kicked off 2020 with a Tractor Run, with an awesome 28 tractors in attendance which, for a first county attempt, I was really chuffed with. We were supporting the Plough Sunday Service at Thaxted Church and our epic adventure started there. The procession then travelled back to County Office, with a rather interesting route through Thaxted, Dunmow, Felsted and via the back lanes of Littley Green. We certainly raised a few eyebrows and turned a few heads, that’s for sure! But I doubt many people have seen a convoy of 28 tractors heading through Dunmow High Street, tooting their horns and drumming up the crowds for some Young Farmer and agricultural support! Upon our arrival back at Whitbreads, we munched our way into cream teas as well as entertaining a raffle. Before I go any further, I must thank each and every one of you for donating prizes, donating financially and for taking the time and diesel to come along and join us. Of course, though, the Government’s plans to scrap duty-free fuel won’t affect such an event in the future, because you all were certainly running on white anyway, weren’t you...?! I know Dan Low was running on fuel station Adblue, at least! You’ll remember to fill up in the farmyard next time, eh mate?! Anyway, that’s enough on the Tractor Run, other than the fact we raised over £500, all of which will be split between our chosen

16

charities: Essex Air Ambulance and the Farming Community Network. The next big event for Essex was the Golden Welly Ball. This was a fantastic evening, kindly hosted by the Speakman family, so on behalf of EYF I thank you again for your continued support. I believe I’m right in saying that we had 130 people in attendance at Golden Welly - I may have got that slightly wrong - but I dare say Beth and Owen will fill you in on the particulars for that one, so I won’t mention too much in my report! All I will say is that it was a cracker of a do, and a massive well done must go to Beth, Owen and their team for pulling off such a hellish evening. On the following day, Paige and Tiff hosted a cross country competition with the kind permission of Charlie and Christy Willett at Parklands Farm. So thank you both very much for allowing us to not only use your footpaths and grass margins, but for your continued support to Essex Young Farmers. I know your hospitality was certainly very much appreciated, and I know that Christy worked very closely with Paige and Tiff to ensure that the day went as smoothly as possible, so thank you very much! Although there had been a huge bender the night before, I was really pleased to see over 60 members in attendance which made me feel incredibly proud of Essex, so well done guys! Following on, and on January 29th we then went on to host the chairman’s training evening at County Office, so a massive well done must go to Tom Leeder for organising. We were very grateful to have some expertise from Andrew Sell in the form of chairman training, Marcus Bailey for treasurers, and to Miles Leeder for taking the reins with the secretary training. Everyone in attendance agreed that it was a very beneficial evening, but felt that having it closer to the beginning of the year would be better suited for future reference, so it’s already scheduled in the diary for September 2020. Essex kicked February off with a bang, with public speaking held at Whitbreads on February 2nd. I was pretty astounded by the high standards of public speaking, with members from various parts of the county definitely keeping me on the edge of my seat. If it wasn’t for the ladies in the office, as well as Paige, Tiff and Rachel Bush, this day would

ESSEX YOUNG FARMERS | SPRING 2020

not have been half the success that it was, FACT! These guys did a lot on the day, but also a lot behind the scenes which, without, the day could not have happened, so can you give them all a swift nod at your paper now. I would say clap, but I dare say most of you have both hands on either side of the magazine, so a swift nod will do! This, again, had a huge amount of support for Essex, which I was really pleased to see! I did actually think several people enjoyed it too and, trust me, the more you do, the easier it gets! And, although I put myself at risk of sounding like an old git now, it stands you in good stead if you’re able to public speak confidently! Whether it be for weddings, parties, work-related or whatever, public speaking will always come up in your life somewhere! There have also been a whole host of parties in between, from all ends and angles of the county. But I’ll leave it to the clubs to chat about some of the antics that have gone on with those! Now then, if you’re all still awake after reading all of that waffle, I just want to say thank you all for your continued support. I feel so honoured to be in the position I’m in currently and it’s all because of you guys! I would also like to add that if any of you are having any issues, big or small, or even good things you want to share, please do let me know. Even if you haven’t got my phone number, drop me a Facebook message, a Snapchat, whatever it may be, drop us a line and either myself, the office ladies, Miles whoever it may be, we’re always here to help and more than happy to do so! So please, don’t panic, because we’re here for you guys. Without you, Essex Young Farmers wouldn’t be what it is today! We’ve got a whole load of fun stuff coming up, so please stay tuned and keep an eye on action press, your club/county group chats, and get along to county meetings to get all of the hot-off-thepress news and updates. Cheers ol’ mates, and catch you all on another day! Well done!

magazine and other events throughout the year. We do hope we can continue to build our subcribers network and value the support you give the federation.

January started with the Plough Sunday followed immediately with a charity Tractor Run from Thaxted Church back to the Young Farmers HQ. An impressive array of machinery turned up and it was quite a spectacle for a Sunday afternoon. I had many comments from the local villages that were upset they did not know anything about the event and would have come out in support, so it seems the popularity of combining these two events will no doubt grow next year. Well done to all involved!

Of course, if you have any comments, we are always open to suggestions on how we can improve our scheme.

The Golden Welly Ball saw a great attendance and thank you to the Speakman family for not only providing the venue, but also having their kitchen hijacked to prepare the great food for the evening.

KBO

In true Young Farmer spirit, the cross country competition took place the very next morning and, to the surprise of everyone, a massive turnout arrived after an energetic party.

So the Show preparations were in full swing now and it was set to be another great success. No doubt many of you will have been involved in one way or another and I was looking forward to seeing as many of you as possible on the Young Farmers’ biggest day of the year.

Miles Leeder

Public speaking also had a large turnout and it was satisfying to see most of the clubs entering a team in one form or another! Perhaps one of the most underrated competitions in the Young Farmers calendar and something nearly all of us will use in our lives at some point to address an audience, whether in work or social events. Congratulations to the winning teams, especially Ongar and Wix who displayed such professionalism which some of our elected government would be hard to match... More importantly, I would like to congratulate all of the teams for entering, be it with new members or members that have never had the opportunity to stand up in public and talk. You have made the first step into improving one of the most important life skills that will stay with you forever. I would urge all clubs next year to spend a few meeting nights in the winter next year with a trainer and make this event even more successful. The Young Farmers calender is always busy with parties, events raising money for charity and competitions, and sometimes I feel maybe there’s too much going on. I’m thinking now that it’s just my age, though, as there is always great support for whatever is going on every weekend. I look forward to attending everything that I can. Having looked at the subscribers scheme back in November, the subscription fees had not been keeping up with inflation for some years and although there is some work to do on old payments and renewing our database, it was felt prudent to raise subscription levels in line with current costs.

If taken into consideration, the free attendance to the Show meant that we were in deficit. Subscribers are an invaluable part of the Young Farmers movement and something that we would like to build upon. We value the subscribers scheme and the benefits include a designated forward parking and entrance gate for the Show, lunches provided at cost, four issues of the

COUNTY REPORTS

COUNTY OFFICE

MARY & CAROLE

Hello and welcome the report from County Office! So it’s been an unusual couple of months here at Whitbreads Barn. Towards the end of 2019 we had a call from the Joss Ridley, the owner of the Compasses at Littley Green, asking if he could relocate to the building whilst his pub had some refurbishment. Initially, Mary and I were certain that this would not work but the Young Farmers, however, were quite certain it would! Once Joss had acquired the appropriate licences, he and his team started to bring over their stock on January 27th, build a bar, place the coffee machine and by the end of the week they were all set up and opened for business in their ‘Pop-up Pub’ that Friday! They have bought in so many people who didn’t even know we existed, let alone knew we were based here, and our magazines have been flying off the shelf. It had not occurred to us just what great publicity this would be for the federation. They were due to be with us until the end of April so

do pop over and see us, have a bite to eat and a cheeky drink while they are still here. Meanwhile it’s all go in the office. As well as all the normal, day-to-day, Young Farmer routine, we also had the Show to consider. Once it gets to January I would say Mary and I spend a good 75% of our time on the Show, which I guess isn’t surprising when you consider we are looking at entertaining 15,000 people! So many areas to be looked at and organised, I would never have imagined that I would need to know about such a variety of things from barn engines to birds of prey! Jack Bosworth and his team are all working hard to ensure the day goes well and all runs as smoothly as possible, which is reassuring as we only have one more meeting before the day itself! See you all at the show!

ACTIVITIES

BETH SPEAKMAN & OWEN EMBLETON

Hello! It’s been a very busy few months for activities with the Golden Welly Awards replacing our usual New Year’s Eve party. Instead, we had a black-tie event at the end of January with eight awards presented, voted for by our members. It was a very busy evening with a two-course meal, awards and DJ to keep our members entertained and, although I think we drank most of the profits, I hope everyone had a great evening! You all looked amazing, anyway. In February, we ran an evening at Kids Kingdom in Southend, with a night of ball pits, inflatables and bouncy games, as well as a licensed bar on the premises. It

was something really different that we had not done for the whole county before and definitely great fun to enjoy being a child again for the evening, with chicken nuggets and party food to finish. After Kids Kingdom closed, we made a trip to the local casino to try our luck. Next up we were planning an outdoor cinema event at County Office at the end of June. We will put out a survey to members on which film people would like to see and have snacks and beverages available so please bring blankets/beanbags along and pray that the weather does not let us down! Be seeing you!

There has been lots going on with competitions since you last heard from us. First we had our ‘Just A Minute’ competition which was very well-attended and a good practice for public speaking so well done to everyone who came and had a go. Something a little different was our cross country competition which was also very well-attended despite following a heavy night at the Golden Welly the night before... what could be better for a hangover than a cross country run?!

ell, what a strange start to the year it has been, which makes writing this a little odd as events have sadly been very limited.

In terms of county fundraising we unfortunately had to cancel our Quiz Night at Whitbread’s Barn due to the lockdown measures, and things have been very quiet ever since! As soon as we are able to, we do still plan to host this, so keep an eye on social media as

we are hoping to release and hold this quite quickly (quiz master Miles is ready and raring to go!), and what a lovely out-of-lockdown social occasion it will no doubt prove to be! There are lots of individual club fundraising events going on throughout Young Farmers with many of the clubs volunteering in the community to help out the elderly or vulnerable whilst also helping to keep the countryside running. There are also some clubs that have been running their own events to raise money to help with the current economic climate.

If you have some time and are interested in what our clubs are doing, please keep checking their Facebook pages, Instagram accounts and any other social media that they are running! We will continue to keep you updated on county events as soon as we are able to run them so, again, keep those eyes peeled… Stay safe!

ello, everyone! At this point of the year show would have very much taken over our lives, never did we ever think, no matter how many times Jack said, that Show would actually be cancelled. But here we are with very empty calendars.

The last time Show was cancelled was in 2001, and since then the Show has gone from strength-tostrength. So we have no doubt, with the excellent continued contribution of our lovely committee, that next year’s Show will return to be a triumph! We are both massively appreciative of those who have pledged their support to our 2021 Show and we look forward to seeing you all soon. Kind regards,

COUNTY SUBSCRIBERS VICTORIA FREEMAN

t the time of writing this, we’re still in lockdown but hopeful for some news to ease the measures later on in the week. Having said that, many of us are in the fortunate positions which has meant that we have not been too restricted in our daily lives with seasonal tasks still needing completing on the farm.

I’m thankful that we managed to hold our coffee morning last October as, sadly, it’s looking unlikely that we’ll be able to arrange any subscribers events for the rest of this Young Farmers calendar year. I look forward to future subscriber events, whatever they may be and, in the meantime, I hope you’re all staying safe and well.

TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT TOM LEEDER

I

hope you’re all keeping safe and well. I have visited a number of clubs over the last couple of months to talk to you all about the fantastic opportunities you have as members of Essex Young Farmers and the funding that is available to you. Unfortunately, I didn’t make it around to all of the clubs before lockdown set in so, if I haven’t been to one of your club meetings yet, I will be in touch as soon as meetings start up again. Whilst you have a spare few minutes sat at home, why not take the opportunity to get your funding application form in? These can be found on the county website. We will consider the cost of any training that will help you to develop your career, so get your thinking caps on as now is a great time to get some extra training under your belt. Although

we are currently not reviewing forms during lockdown, any that are sent in will be reviewed the next time F&GP are able to meet. As a reminder, if you’re off to university in September don’t forget that you have the opportunity to apply for funding through the Witham Fund. Application forms can be found

WE WILL CONSIDER THE COST OF ANY TRAINING THAT WILL HELP YOU TO DEVELOP YOUR CAREER

on the website and, again, will be reviewed by trustees next time they meet. The D.C. Bower Fund is still available to fund any travel related to agriculture, education or furthering your career. Although we’re all stuck at home for now, and I doubt anyone will be able to travel for some time, think about all the places you could go when borders are reopened. Don’t forget NFYFC travel for 2021 will be released in the autumn and, if you are successful in gaining a place, you will be able to apply to the D.C. Bower Fund to help towards the costs. I look forward to receiving all of your training and development application forms over the coming weeks!

CHAPLAIN

CHAPLAIN’S CHAPTER

REVD JANET NICHOLLS

Dear all, What strange times we find ourselves in! We expected to find ourselves involved in the largest, friendliest gathering of the year - the Essex Young Farmers’ Show - this month, but instead we’re trying to cope with the biggest social restrictions our country has ever witnessed. Research is telling us that young people are affected the most by the current restrictions, so this is a plea to look after yourselves, keep in touch with each other and don’t hesitate to phone me for a chat anytime. Like everyone else, the way I work has changed substantially over the last few weeks. But my chaplaincy hasn’t changed at all. I continue to ‘be with’ anyone in the agricultural community who would appreciate an independent, confidential, listening ear. I pray for you (probably more than ever and that can’t be a bad thing!) and try to ensure that you all know about the Farmers’ Helpline - 03000 111 999, open daily between 7.00am and 11.00pm. All of the farming charities and organisations participate in the helpline service, ensuring you will be signposted to the best service to meet your need. We work hard to ensure that the service is caring, well-informed and wide-ranging in what we can offer. Please don’t hesitate to use it. For all of us, there will be highs and lows in the weeks ahead and Essex Young Farmers have been brilliant at keeping everyone smiling. In a media interview last week, I found myself recommending the Young Farmers’ Loo Roll challenge for the times when you need to raise your spirits! But we mustn’t belittle the impact of the huge challenges we face. I have found myself challenged and stressed by the unprecedented impact of this virus. During this time, I’ve found it useful to hear what’s helping everyone to get through it, so I thought I’d share what presently sits in the

top four places of on my survival list! It won’t surprise you to hear that my faith has first place. The deep inner peace that accompanies faith is often beyond words. Much about this crisis can’t be vocalised. Second, is keeping in touch with good friends, especially those you can be really honest with. Third, is walking in the countryside every day. Unlike some countries, we are encouraged to take daily exercise. If you have the countryside on your doorstep, now is the time to truly enjoy it! And fourth, I’ve become an avid reader of those who have endured isolation in their lives. I especially appreciate the writing of the astronaut, Anne McClain, who spent six months on the International Space Station. She explained how she managed the stress associated with isolation. She wrote:

Stress happens when expectations aren’t in line with reality. When we can’t change reality, its best to focus on our expectationsExpect to do things differently Expect to need to adapt Expect to be out of your comfort zone Expect to put others first. All of our expectations have been tipped on their heads. I found Anne McClain’s advice helpful, but some expectations remain. Many of you join Young Farmers expecting to make good and enduring friendships. The friendships have the potential to be some of the strongest bonds in life. COVID-19 can’t change that, can it?!

ALL THE FARMING CHARITIES AND ORGANISATIONS PARTICIPATE IN THE HELPLINE SERVICE, ENSURING YOU WILL BE SIGNPOSTED TO THE BEST SERVICE TO MEET YOUR NEED. WE WORK HARD TO ENSURE THAT THE SERVICE IS CARING, WELLINFORMED AND WIDE-RANGING IN WHAT WE CAN OFFER. PLEASE DON’T HESITATE TO USE IT

Take care, God bless and please get in touch at any time.
