IN CHARGE:

WAYNE BROWN

WELCOME BACK TO PARK DRIVE FOR TODAY’S FIXTURE AND, AFTER GOING SO LONG WITHOUT A COMPETITIVE HOME FIXTURE, THIS IS NOW OUR SECOND IN A WEEK.

Today I’d like to extend a warm welcome to Paul and his Stowmarket side for their first ever trip to Park Drive, today’s match officials and the supporters of both teams. After starting so well against Romford, it was disappointing to lose last week and exit the FA Cup, albeit to a strong Aveley team who will be there or thereabouts come the end of the league campaign. I felt we lost too many individual battles in the first half and we were not up to our usual standards. In the second half, I thought we improved and forced their goalkeeper in to making several saves but, in the end, it just wasn’t to be our afternoon. However, exiting the FA Cup does allow us to focus on the job in hand this season and that is to get promoted out of this division. Stowmarket will be a tough test today. Although they’re new the league, they’ve had a couple of brilliant seasons and were unfortunate, like us, to not be promoted before now. They will be well organised and their results already this season suggest we will need to be on top of our game. They are a team who like to attack so I’m sure it will be a good game for the spectators and, hopefully, we can pick up the three points. Your support was fantastic last week and to have over three-hundred spectators back inside Park Drive was such a great occasion for all of us. So, please continue to bring your best voices, make lots of noise and cheer the boys on as much as you can. Hopefully we will reward you with three points at 5pm. I hope you enjoy the game. Wayne

SATURDAY 21ST AUGUST | THE EMIRATES FA CUP PRELIMINARY ROUND | ATT: 308

There will be no FA Cup heroics for the Jammers this season, who saw their journey ended at the first hurdle after a 1-0 defeat against Aveley. Following the previous week’s win over Romford, Wayne Brown made just one change to his starting eleven, with Makhosini Khanye introduced from the start in place of youngster, Lordon Akolbire, whilst Martyn Stokes and Kojo Awotwi were still unavailable for selection. Aveley arrived at Park Drive off the back of a 1-1 draw against AFC Sudbury on the opening day of the season.

06

MALDON & TIPTREE vs STOWMARKET TOWN

There was to be no repeat of the electric start enjoyed at Romford, as the visitors started on the front foot. The Jammers tried to build momentum, however the Aveley were pressing with intensity and preventing Brown’s side from creating any chances. Bryan Ifeanyi was denied whilst through on goal a quarter of an hour into the game but, in spite of strong appeals from the hosts, the referee waved play on. Bradley McClenaghan would collect the game’s first caution shortly afterwards. John Gilbert had two chances for the Jammers as half-time approached, but saw his first headed effort sail over the bar before sending a curling effort wide of the near post. Misplaced passing from the Maldon midfield gifted Aveley with a great opportunity on the stroke of half-time. Alex Akrofi evaded a number of tackles from the hosts to break free and bend a delightful effort into the top corner, beyond the outstretched Ben McNamara to take a one-goal lead in at the interval. Happy with their advantage, the visitors were content with playing on the break in the second half and withstand the pressure as Brown’s side pushed for an equalising goal in a bid to repeat their cup exploits of the previous two seasons. McNamara was able to deny Akrofi with a smart save to keep Maldon in the tie as the game entered its final quarter, before Shomari Barnwell made his return from injury by replcing Laste Dombaxe as the Jammers shfited shape as the sought the vital goal. It was to be Barnwell who was presented with a glorious chance as the game entered stoppage time, linking up well with Charlee Hughes. However, he could only watch David Hughes in the visiting goal deny his volleyed effort with a smart save and the Jammers were left to bow out of the FA Cup.

PAUL MUSGROVE

A former player with Walshamle-Willows, Paul Musgrove initially joined Stowmarket as a player in the title-winning campaign of 2016/17. Assistant to Rick Andrews since the summer of 2017, Musgrove took charge following Andrews’ surprise resignation in November 2020 after last season had been suspended due to the pandemic. At the time of his appointment, Musgrove said: “I’m proud to be the manager of Stow and hopefully we can go on and achieve what he [Andrews] would have wanted and get the club promoted. “We’re just hoping we can carry on what we started.”

MALDON & TIPTREE vs STOWMARKET TOWN

The history of Stowmarket Town Football Club takes us back more than 125 years to 1883, when the club was first founded. Our story begins in 1883 and the first date that records show a mention of a football team in the town. A team had been formed from an amalgamation of two local sides, Stowmarket St. Peter and Stowmarket Ironworks, and played a friendly against Needham Market School. The amalgamated club was named Stowmarket Association, with the ‘Association’ tag being added to distinguish the club from the Rugby Football Club. Cup success was forthcoming in the Suffolk Junior Cup in 1907, with a 5-1 victory over old rivals Westbourne Mills, and in the 190910 season, Stowmarket achieved a remarkable double with the Seniors

clinching the IDL Division One title, and the Reserves coming up trumps in Division Two. During these times, crowds were frequently in excess of 1,000, particularly for the visits of Westbourne Mills, who often brought large numbers of their own fans to the Cricket Meadow. The 1930s began with a bang and a trip to Portman Road for a second qualifying FA Cup match. Interest was such that British Rail organised a special train which took dozens of fans to the game. Defeat was not unexpected, as by this time Ipswich Town were only a few years away from joining the Football League, but there was the welcome share of the large gate. The real prize came later in the season when at long last the Senior Cup was brought home to the Cricket Meadow after a splendid 3-1 over old rivals Sudbury Town.

Victory in the Senior Cup ensured on-field success but, behind the scenes, the financial storm clouds were gathering. There was an increasing shortage of money in the town as the depression had spread to the rural areas, and despite the club’s outstanding record, gates steadily fell. Having struggled on, the team were forced to disband in the late 1930s before football ceased during the war regardless. After the hostilities, John Scarfe was approached by several exStowmarket players who wanted to reform the club. So it was that many of the old players came to join him with the Stowupland Corinthians, and as things turned out this was to be the embryo of the future Stowmarket Football Club. Having settled the question of the club’s title, the stage was set for the ‘Golden Years’ that were to follow. Appropriately too, the new club adopted gold and black as their colours, which has stood the test of time until the present day. In August 1950, there dawned one of the most memorable seasons in the club’s history. Jackie Little came back to the Cricket Meadow after an absence of 15 years, including the war years. During this time, he had made over 200 appearances for Ipswich Town. With Jackie returning as player-coach the team swept the board, winning the Border League championship and the League Knockout Cup with a 3-2 win over Clacton Reserves at Halstead. They rounded off a marvellous season by beating Sudbury 2-0 to take the Suffolk Senior Cup, before a record post-war crowd of 10,867 at Portman Road. Just for good measure, the Brantham Charity Cup and the Battle of Britain Cup were also added to the record. Stowmarket embarked upon the 1952-53 season in the powerful

Eastern Counties League. The going was somewhat tougher, as expected, in the higher grade, but the crowds continued to come and enjoyed the opportunity to watch a better class of football. Much interest was created with the visits of Reserve and A teams of Football League clubs such as Arsenal, Chelsea, Colchester United, Gillingham, Norwich City, Tottenham and West Ham United. 1960 saw a change of management at the club and with it came a change of policy. Derek Parker took over as manager and Stowmarket reverted to amateur status. The club had been very cramped financially and many people believed in retrospect that it had been a mistake to turn professional in the first place. The policy was to be a great success in the years that followed, as many of the best young amateurs in the area came to Stowmarket and a breath of fresh air swept into the Cricket Meadow. The club’s chairman Cecil ‘Buzzer’ Rivers unfortunately passed away in July 1981, and there was also rumours about the possible sale of the Cricket Meadow which were rife in the town, which lead to a lot of uncertainty about the future of the club. In 1978 the club decided to regularly enter the FA Vase instead of the FA Trophy, thus giving themselves a much better chance of a successful cup run. One highlight of this period was the visit of Ipswich Town to the Cricket Meadow in April 1980. Bobby Robson brought his entire first team along to play a testimonial match for Michael Rivers and Robin Bunn, Stowmarket’s longest serving players. For the start of the 1983-84 season, Stowmarket Football Club became known as Stowmarket Town Football Club, and during 1983, the rumours about the sale of the Cricket Meadow became a reality, and so the club

played its last game on the old ground on May 17, 1984, beating Gorleston 4-1. The close season of 1984 was very hectic as the club’s members set about the daunting task of moving equipment large and small to the new premises which had been prepared for them by the council. Chairman of the time, Joe Sutton, played an integral part to ensure the move was completed in time for the big kick off in August, when a crowd of over 400 people gathered to see the first league game at Greens Meadow. The 2016-17 season for Stowmarket was a defining moment in the history of the club. The first team not only won its first title in 66 years, but its first promotion in its 134 year history. Not to be out done, Terry Hovell’s reserve side achieved what was thought impossible by beating Woodbridge Town Reserves 2-0 in the Suffolk Senior Reserve Cup final, held at Colchester United’s ground. After struggling at first to adapt back into the Premier Division, Rick’s men went on an astonishing run, ending up with 103 points. However, in a high-quality division, it was not enough to overhaul the top two, champions Coggeshall Town and runners-up Felixstowe & Walton United, who took the two promotion places. The summer of 2019 saw Rick bolster his squad again, with several players joining from higher league Leiston, and Stow looked on course for the best season in the club’s long history. First, wins over Colney Heath, Stansted and Glebe secured a firstever appearance in the last 16 of the FA Vase, where in front of a 1,000 plus crowd, league rivals Wroxham prevailed 2-0 at Trafford Park. In the league, Stow went unbeaten with 23 wins and five draws from 28 games, before the Coronavirus pandemic led to the season being declared null and void.

When did you play for the Jammers and who was in charge? As many will probably know, I played for the Jammers last season under Wayne Brown. Best player you played with whilst with Maldon? It’s almost impossible to pick one player out of the unbelievable squad we had but I’d say Tyrique Hyde. Hydey had everything, pace, power, vision, technique and had the end product that comes with it! What is your best memory, whilst playing for the club? A lot of great memories but it’s an easy one - Leyton Orient away in the first round of the FA Cup. Scoring in that game and helping us go through to the second round was an unbelievable feeling, and to have the fans celebrate with us after the game topped it all off! Nowadays that can be taken for granted.

MALDON & TIPTREE vs STOWMARKET TOWN

What is your worst memory whilst playing for the Jammers? For me it would have to be losing in the final minutes of the game to Newport in the second round of the FA Cup. Even though it was still a massive accomplishment for us, I believed we could have won and gone even further! Away from Park Drive, your most enjoyable moment in Football? I would have to say travelling to Barcelona and playing them at their famous training ground La Masia as a youth player at Brentford FC. Even though we lost 2-1, I scored and it was a great feeling and the whole experience was surreal. What team are you playing for now? Or if you’ve stopped playing, what are you up to, these days? I am now at Wealdstone FC in the National League, joined by Charlee and Jorome and I’m hoping I can continue scoring a lot of goals and enjoying my football.

MALDON & TIPTREE

CLUB HISTORY

In 2009, Ed Garty took over the ownership of Maldon Town from Michael Kirkham, whilst still in charge of running Tiptree United and installed Alan Brockhouse as Maldon Town’s new chairman. Following the takeover, Colin Wallington returned for a second spell in charge of Maldon Town, leaving his post as Tiptree United manager immediately. Colin previously managed Maldon Town from 2003 until 2007, having achieved promotion in the 200506 via the play-off final. Having left Maldon in 2007, Colin went on to manage Tiptree United where he achieved promotion winning the

12

MALDON & TIPTREE vs STOWMARKET TOWN

Eastern Counties Division One title in the 2007/08 season. Until the conclusion of the 2009/10 season both Maldon Town & Tiptree United played their home games at Park Drive, under a ground share arrangement. In the summer of 2010, Maldon Town & Tiptree United amalgamated to form, Maldon & Tiptree Football Club, under the ownership of Ed Garty. As a result of the amalgamation, Tiptree United withdrew from the Essex Senior League, resulting in the club’s last ever fixture being a 3-1 defeat against Enfield 1893 on 24 April 2010. Maldon & Tiptree took

the place of Maldon Town in the Isthmian Division One North. Following the retirement of Colin Wallington, Assistant Manager, Brad King and Glen Knight were appointed as the clubs JointManager. As the pair’s first managerial role, the new club witnessed wholesale changes with only a handful of players remaining who finished the season with Maldon Town and Tiptree United, respectively. The 2010-11 campaign saw the new club remain in or around the play-off positions for the majority of the season, finishing in eighth

place to finish the season with sixty-three points. Despite the high turnover of players, the good standard of football was maintained and it was in the end, a disappointing end to the season, for the club to fall away in the later stages of the season when suspensions and injuries eventually took their toll to leave the club frustratingly short of the play-off positions at the end of April. The 2011-12 season, proved to not be so successful and in November 2011, King and Knight were relieved of their duties with immediate effect. Ex-Charlton professional Mike Flanagan was appointed as Caretaker Manager and remained in place until the end of the season, steering the club to a respectful mid-table finish, managing thirty-three games and finishing with a win percentage of 49.12%. At the start of the 2012-13 campaign, Ex-Stansted & Redbridge boss Terry Spillane was appointed as Manager, and Mike Flanagan departed the club. The change of management, once again brought wholesale changes with the playing squad. Ex Tiptree United manager, Jody was brought to the club as Terry’s Assistant Manager. After a fantastic and unbeaten start to the season, the club found themselves at the top of the table but an incredible run by eventual Champions Grays Athletic meant Maldon had to settle for a place in the play-offs – Terry’s side remained unbeaten until Boxing Day, when they lost away from home against local rivals Heybridge Swifts. Disappointment came in the play-off final however when they lost a two goal lead to draw with Thamesmead Town, who thenwent on to win the final,on penalties.

After a disappointing end to the previous season, Terry Spillane oversaw more wholesale changes in the playing squad, including the departure of Assistant Manager, Jody Brown. Despite the changes, Maldon finished in ninth position with seventy-six points, winning twenty-one games. More changes to the playing staff, resulted in poor start to the 2014-15 season, and the club parted ways with Spillane in September 2014, with Chairman, Ed Garty takeover as Caretaker Manager, for three games. At the end of September 2014, Alan Kimble was appointed as manager and remained in charge for the remainder of the season, however the side struggled and more changes in the playing staff occurred. Maldon finished the season in nineteenth place with only forty-nine points. During the 2014-15 season, Media Officer at the time, Richard Buckby ran a competition for supporters to vote for a club nickname, with the options The River Boys, The Marshmen, The Mudmen and The Jammers available. The vote took place in January 2015 and was featured on National Radio station, TalkSport, with the The Jammers winning the vote with over 50% and being confirmed as the clubs new nickname. Following the completion of the 2014-15 season, the club linked with Colchester United and the two clubs formed close ties, which resulted in ex Ipswich Town midfielder, David Wright being appointed as First Team Manager. Wright remained in charge until December 2015 as he was appointed Assistant Manager of Colchester United. Liam Bailey took charge of the First Team on

a temporary basis, only managing one game, which finished four-all against Tilbury on Boxing Day in 2015. Moving into 2016, exLeiston Manager, Steve Ball was appointed First Team Manager and steered the club to a respectable finish in the league table climbing to seventh place, only missing out on the play-off places by nine points. In the closed season, a change of Management at Colchester United saw Steve Ball appointed as their Assistant Manager, leaving his position of Maldon & Tiptree Manager as a result. Ex-Manchester City midfielder, Kevin Horlock was then appointed as First Team manager ahead of the 2016-17 campaign and for the majority of the season, the Jammers sat at the top of the table before slipping away to finish in second place. Horlock’s side managed to reach the play-off final, however lost to Thurrock one-nil. The following campaign was not quite as successful for Horlock, with Maldon finishing just outside the play-off places in seventh place, with sixty-nine points. After managing 112 games, Kevin Horlock departed in the closed season and was replaced by ex-Colchester defender, Wayne Brown. In Brown’s first season in charge, the 2018-19 season, the Jammers finished in second place and reached the play-off final, but lost on penalties against local rivals, Heybridge Swifts. The 2019-20 season was one to remember for the club, but for the right and wrong reasons. The club achieved great things in the Emirates FA Cup. Having reached the First Round proper of the competition, Maldon beat League Two side, Leyton Orient away from home, taking over 600

fans to the home of The O’s, with the goals coming from Danny Parish and a superb solo goal from Jorome Slew. In the second round proper, Maldon were drawn against Football League side, Newport County with the game being shown live on National Television– with the Jammers only beaten by the League Two side, with a goal in stoppage time, with the game finishing 1-0. A record attendance of 1876 was recorded. However, the 2019-20 season will also be remembered for the wrong reasons. After impressive performances on the field, the Jammers found themselves top of the Isthmian Division One North, thirteen points clear with four games in hand, when disaster struck. With a global pandemic declared, as a result of Coronavirus, the league competition was formally abandoned on 26 March 2020, with all results from the season being expunged, and no promotion or relegation taking place to, from, or within the division. The club were denied a chance of promotion and forced to remain in the Division One North for the 2020-21 season.

ED GARTY STEPPED DOWN AS CHAIRMAN IN OCTOBER 2020 Following the disappointing end to the 2019-20 season, Wayne Brown remained in charge of the club and wholesale changes in the playing squad occurred again, with a number of the previous season’s squad securing transfers to clubs higher up the football pyramid. The Jammers were dealt a big blow in October 2020 when owner and Chairman Ed Garty stood down from his position with immediate effect, ending a challenging ten years at the helm. After a period of uncertainty for

the football club, General Manager Ron Dangerfield was confirmed as the new Chairman, with Richard Cowling taking ownership of the football club. Just like the 2019-20 season, the 2020-21 campaign was terminated with promotion and relegation denied for all the sides competing in the Division One North. However, prior to the curtailment the Jammers had reached the Emirates FA Cup First Round for the second successive season, this time losing to Morecambe 1-0 in front of the television cameras. Brown’s side also achieved their longest ever run in the Buildbase FA Trophy, eventually losing to Gloucester City. The Jammers were only able to play in five league games, finishing in third place before the season was curtailed. Heading in to the 2021/22 season, Wayne Brown remains in charge of the first team and is now the club’s longest-serving manager, holding the record for the most games managed in charge of Maldon & Tiptree Football Club.

Accordingly any form of discriminatory abuse whether it by reason of age, disability, gender reassignment, race, religion and belief, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, sex and sexual orientation or any other form of abuse will be reported to The Football Association for action by that Association.” (The FA 0800 085 0508 / Kick it Out 020 7253 0162).The Isthmian League and all Member Clubs in the League are committed to promoting equality by treating people fairly and with respect, by recognising that inequalities may exist, by taking steps to address them and providing access and opportunities for all members of the community.”
