n the last programme I gave details of why the Club was against the proposals in Project Big Picture. Following the rejection of the proposal by the PL we received a copy of a discussion paper prepared by Greg Clarke the Chairman of the FA prior to the discussions Rick Parry had with the two clubs. The proposals included: • Two divisions of 18 clubs called Premier League 1 and 2 • The remainder of EFL clubs together with the National League and National Leagues North and South to comprise 5 divisions • League Cup and FA Cup replays discontinued • Investigate Premier League B teams in the new EFL • PL solidarity payments to EFL clubs be reshaped • EPPP payments (financial support from PL for Academies) be limited to Premier League 1 and 2 This discussion paper has not been put to clubs for consideration. I can only repeat that I do not believe that the suggestions are in the best interests of League 2 clubs in general and Grimsby Town in particular. The inclusion of B teams in the EFL would undermine the whole basis of the League and the proper connection there is and always will be between a Club such as ours and the community it serves. The loss of EPPP payments (this year in the sum of £445,00) would have a devastating effect on the running of our Academy. I will continue to fight for what is right and in the best interest of our Club. Philip
We are paying homage to Bill Shankly, former Grimsby Town and Carlisle United boss and one of English football’s most decorated managers ever, by replicating the iconic ‘orange’ programme cover used between 1952-55. It was just one of the changes made at the club during our very own Shankly era.

ello and thanks for downloading the programme ahead of today’s game against Carlisle United. Chris Beech’s side have been in good form of late, so it will be a good test for my lads.
Looking back at Tuesday night’s game against Harrogate, I made a few changes to the team because I was trying to get some of my other lads up to speed with such a congested fixture schedule over the coming weeks but, in truth, some of them weren’t ready yet. Also, I think we started with the wrong shape. It suited us against Cheltenham and Orient but not Harrogate because they are a very good side who are very good at what they do. What we need to do is be ready to take on whoever we’re playing and stop them first. I tried to beat them first and I found out the hard way that we weren’t good enough to do that against their pressing and tenacity. Really, they could have been 2-0 up before we gave them the goal. Unfortunately we made mistakes for both of their goals - the first one was avoidable and their second effectively came from our free kick. But I thought we were a lot more threatening in the second half. I was delighted with Tilley, again. I thought he looked really sharp and his goal which drew us level in the first half was a cracker. Also it was positive to see Hanson back out there again and move the ball around better, but it still wasn’t enough. I wasn’t happy with my behaviour on the bench and I apologised to Harrogate for that. In hindsight, I was far too emotional and I couldn’t control my temper. I didn’t like some things I saw happening but that’s not an excuse. I was bitterly disappointed to lose on Tuesday but the next day I was fighting and kicking again and looking forward to today’s game. It’s a privilege to be in charge of this team and I’ll be looking for a reaction from the lads this afternoon.

MACCA CAPTAIN’S COLUMN:

fternoon all. Obviously it was a disappointing result on Tuesday against a team who, in my opinion, know what they are and what they are good at and they do it very well. But even though it wasn’t a great night for us as individuals and collectively, like I’ve alluded to before, we kept going and fighting to the end. I know that’s the bare minimum you expect, but it’s again a reflection of the team’s character. Even though it wasn’t a great night, we gave our all.
I said when I started doing these programme notes that I didn’t want them to be generic and instead offer you some insight into stuff that happens ‘behind closed doors’. Now, given the games we’ve been playing, it’s been pretty much football relentlessly and the days we aren’t in, you’re concentrating on eating right and recovering in the right way. So on Thursday, we had a little bit of a treat when we had a ‘cinema’ afternoon at BP watching one of the Gaffer’s favourite films, Coach Carter. Other than being a very good film about togetherness and Greg Howard again exceeding expectations with his fine choice of popcorn, drinks and burritos, it was another example of doing something a little different to take the mind (as well as the body) away from football.

ames Tilley is enjoying a really bright start to his League Two campaign.
The 22-year-old has scored twice in four games, including a thunderous drive in Tuesday night’s defeat to Harrogate Town. The versatile forward has been a regular in the Town side since Ian Holloway was able to lure him away from his boyhood club, Brighton & Hove Albion, back in January. He made his debut for the Seagulls back in May 2015, aged just 16 years old, but managed just three further appearances before transferring to Blundell Park on an 18-month deal. During his five years on the fringes at the Amex Stadium, Tilley also turned out for Albion’s academy and Under 23 team. A year before he became a Mariner, the technically gifted youngster spent the second half of the 2018/19 season on loan at Cork City, getting his first real taste of men’s football. While last term, he spent the first half of the season on loan at National League promotion-chasing Yeovil Town, where his nimble feet and ball carrying ability caught the eye of the future Town boss. Tilley made his Town debut in the 1-0 defeat to Exeter City at Blundell Park back in January and featured nine more times before coronavirus curtailed the season. After the enforced break, the former Brighton player is looking fresh, sharp and hungry to become a key figure in Ian Holloway’s side this campaign.

MARINERS TRUST
elcome to the staff, players and directors of Carlisle United for today’s game - it’s just such a shame we cannot add supporters to that list. It’s been well documented we now have the bizarre situation that we have EFL permission (subject to local authority sanction), to allow fans into hospitality in the lounges to watch the game on the screens, but they are still not allowed outside. Furthermore, they are not allowed to watch the game through the window in McMenemy’s. You really couldn’t make it up! On the back of this we are able to open the Trust bar to a maximum of 30 people which we are happy to do if there is a demand for it. Quite understandably, many don’t fancy it because the thought of the game taking place within yards of them but not being able to watch is too much to bear. Others like the idea of being able to watch with fellow supporters despite the strange situation. The good thing is it will give hours for our fantastic bar manageress, Sharon. We continue to support the #letfansin campaign through the FSA and although Covid restrictions are getting more stringent again, we remain convinced that football can very safely manage socially distanced fans. A massive amount of work has gone into these across the country, and compared to other social situations still taking place, this would surely be just as safe. As with a lot of things at the moment there are lots of contradictions. Our friends and neighbours Cleethorpes Town, two miles away, are allowed 500 fans in to watch their games, that surely cannot be right. As we write these notes, we still have no further news on any rescue package and the debate around football reform rumbles on. What is clearly happening is that those with certain agendas are trying to take advantage of clubs in crisis and dangle what looks like a nice juicy carrot. But closer inspection shows it is riddled with holes. What was particularly concerning is it has emerged that there was the proposal from FA chairman Greg Clarke back in March which proposed the formation of Premier League 2, introduction of B teams into lower leagues and the combining of EFL Leagues 1 & 2 with the National League. This, together with the proposal from EFL chairman Rick Parry, which, among other things, recommended that two EFL clubs be relegated to the National League without discussing with the club’s shows once again that those at the top of football governance have specific agendas that they are driving without consultation. What is desperately needed is a consensus approach that involves all of the stakeholders, including fans. That is why we support the “sustain the game” campaign coordinated by the FSA. You can read more about this here, but these are the key principles: 1. Protect our clubs – football clubs are community assets and an important expression of individual and local identity, they deserve legal protection and urgent support to secure their future; 2. Transparency – everyone has a right to know who owns their club, and how clubs and the authorities operate. Owners are custodians of clubs on behalf of all of us; 3. Financial controls – fans want rules with real teeth which are independently enforced, clubs and leagues can’t be left to regulate themselves. 4. Strengthen the pyramid – football as a whole is wealthy, but we need a smarter and fairer use of the money in the game to encourage sustainability. 5. Supporter engagement – fans are the lifeblood of the game, they need a voice in their clubs and on all issues that affect them and their communities. The government, as part of their manifesto, pledged to support this but, as yet, we have yet to see any significant progress. The need for this has long been evident and Covid has just made it even more urgent. Fingers crossed for progress in the coming weeks. Enjoy the game. The Mariners Trust Board

NCS PROGRAMME UPDATE G rimsby Town Sports and Education Trust were set for one of the most successful summers on record with regards to our NCS programme. Over 450 young people in our region had already signed up to programme with a further five schools still to engage. So we were gearing up for what would have been an exceptional year for the Trust. COVID-19 shattered our plans because of the lockdown measures in place and the uncertainty around the county. However, we were still able to deliver a meaningful and successful programme.
After numerous debates, we were delighted to be able to deliver our re-purposed Summer 2020 programme. We had over 100% of our re-purposed contract and we were able to offer a two week programme in which the young people made a real difference to charities and organisations within our community. The young people took part in numerous team building activities and educational workshops to help them with all the uncertainty around their GCSE grades and the bespoke programme enabled them with support around CV writing, interview skills and lessons around looking after our physical and emotional well-being and understanding our community dynamics.
17
Furthermore, the young people made a huge contribution in helping our region get back on its feet with charities including: • • • • • • •
Women’s aid The Rock Foundation Young Mind Matters Mind Cancer Research UK Nunsthorpe Community Farm When you Wish Upon a Star
The charities were supported in what’s been a very testing time for everyone. The young people showed extreme commitment and enthusiasm throughout and are a real credit to the area. Adie Merrikin, NCS Manager, said: “The last few months have been horrendous if truth be told. There was extreme doubt that we would have been able to offer a programme. It’s disappointing because we would have had the best programme to date with regards to numbers and the impact we would have made. However, we have to be realistic about what the country and the world is facing. People are dying because of the disease, so to get a programme on considering everything is amazing.” Our NCS programme have been working extremely hard to ensure that the Autumn 2020 programme goes ahead. We have been able to put a very meaningful programme together that supports colleges, schools and the young people in a time they need it.
Everyone loses when you step on the track
Grimsby Town want our fans, families and friends to stay safe, so we are supporting the You Vs Train campaign. We are sharing the message that young people need to stay off the tracks. 8 young people have died in the last two years after trespassing on the railway. PLEASE don’t be next. Visit youvstrain.co.uk for more information and help us keep our fans safe.

6. AARON HAYDEN
Versatile defender Aaron Hayden is an important figure in Carlisle’s back line. The big centre back joined the Cumbrians from Wolves at the beginning of last season after making a good impression while on trial during pre-season. The 23-year-old didn’t make an appearance for the Wolves first team during his five years at Molineux but he did gain experience on loan at Newport, Hemel Hempstead, Bromley, Telford and Stourbridge. The one-time Chelsea junior proved his leadership qualities during the 24 appearances last season enough to persuade Chris Beech to make the defender the club’s vice captain in the summer. So far this season, Hayden has been a regular at the back and even popped up with important goals in Carlisle’s last two games. Previous Clubs: Wolves, Newport County (Loan), Hemel Hempstead Town (Loan), Bromley (Loan), Telford United (Loan), Stourbridge (Loan).
MIDFIELDER
12. JON MELLISH
Initially signed as a defender in 2019 from Gateshead, Jon Mellish has been converted into midfielder with an eye for goal by Chris Beech. The left-footer was able to operate in a number of positions for the Heed and clocked up 58 appearances prior to his move to Brunton Park. During his final season at Gateshead, he was called up to the England C squad and won the division’s young player of the year award. After making 22 appearances for his new club last season, the midfielder has been an ever-present for the Cumbrians this term and has quickly chalked up five goals already, including a brace against Sunderland in the Football League Trophy earlier this month. Previous Clubs: Gateshead, Newcastle Benfield (Loan)
FORWARD
9. LEWIS ALESSANDRA
Hard-working forward Lewis Alessandra is a popular figure at Brunton Park. He initially signed for Carlisle on a short term deal in January and impressed during his ten appearances before Covid cut short the 2019/20 season. Following his release from Morecambe in the summer, the 31-year-old joined the Cumbrians permanently and has so far scored twice in ten appearances - including one in last weekend’s win against Colchester United. More than a decade ago, Alessandra burst on to the scene at Oldham before successful spells with Morecambe, Plymouth Argyle and Hartlepool United earned the forward a reputation at League Two level. The tenacious frontman moved to Notts County in 2017 and was a key figure in Kevin Nolan’s side that went close to earning promotion to League One. Last season, he returned to his former club Morecambe but chose a switch to Cumbria mid-season. Previous Clubs: Oldham Athletic, Morecambe, Plymouth Argyle, Rochdale, York City (Loan), Hartlepool United, Notts County, Morecambe.

GRIMSBY TOWN 6-2 CARLISLE UNITED 1ST FEBRUARY 1908
Carlisle had only been in existence for four seasons when they were drawn against Town at Blundell Park. They were in the Lancashire Combination, and couldn’t live with Town, a team in Division 2 – even though the Mariners were not enjoying the best of league seasons. Bob Blanthorne was on fire scoring five times. Town would beat Crystal Palace in Round 3, and then go out to Newcastle in front of 45,000 Geordies.
OF THE BEST
vs Carlisle United
CARLISLE UNITED 1-2 GRIMSBY TOWN 29TH SEPTEMBER 1952
The club’s unofficial historian, John Kirk, takes a look at six memorable encounters against the Cumbrians.
In their first league meeting Town were managed by Bill Shankly – just three months after he had left the Carlisle club, because he felt the players hadn’t received the bonuses they had earned for ending up 3rd in the Division. It was a happy return up north for Shanks, but perhaps a better return game in February when the 4-1 victory was part of an 11game winning streak that remains a record for the Mariners. Even so Town finished second to the Imps at a time when only one team was promoted.
CARLISLE UNITED 0-2 GRIMSBY TOWN 21ST DECEMBER 1979
CARLISLE UNITED 0-1 GRIMSBY TOWN 1ST APRIL 1998
The League computer must have had a serious sense of humour bypass, for in an FL experiment all the pre-Christmas Saturday matches were changed to the Friday night. As if Carlisle on a freezing Friday night was not far enough, Town had just lost the second replay of their amazing League Cup run at Derby, v Wolves. Even so the Mariners ran out winners, as George Kerr stood with the forty Mighty Mariners on the terraces and told them they must be mad! The return on the 4th April saw Town win 2-0, and move three points clear of Sheffield Wednesday at the top of Division 3, with Blackburn in 3rd spot.
If the game against Carlisle had been difficult timing in 1979, this game was even worse. We’d just all been to Wembley for the first time ever winning the AWS Trophy on the Sunday, when the team had to travel to Carlisle (Carlisle had refused to move the game to the following night, hoping no doubt to capitalise on tired legs). In the event, justice was done with a Kev Donovan goal separating the two sides.
GRIMSBY TOWN 6-0 CARLISLE UNITED 24 AUGUST 1999
The League Cup First Round of the 1999-00 season saw the clubs lock horns again. A 0-0 in Cumbria was converted to a 6-0 home win at Blundell Park with a hat-trick from Jack Lester, with further goals from Stacy Coldicott, Captain Fantastic Paul Groves, and yet again from Kev Donovan.
CARLISLE UNITED 2-0 GRIMSBY TOWN 3RD MARCH 2018
Yes, a strange match to choose as one of the “Six of the best!” But after this defeat, with Town seemingly nailed on relegation candidates, Michael Jolley was appointed and managed to work a minor miracle that saw Town win four of their final nine matches to avoid the Grim Reaper! So a bad result led to a satisfying end of the season. I’m sure that even Shankly would have approved of that!
JACK LESTER, HAT-TRICK HERO

SHANKLY Bill Shankly, one of English football’s most decorated managers, had spells in charge of the Mariners and Carlisle United. Neville Butt takes a close look at his three-year spell at Blundell Park between 1951 and 1954. Bill Shankly was born in a coal mining town in Ayrshire. He made 16 appearances for Carlisle before being transferred to Preston for £500. Bill became a firm favourite with his fierce but fair tackling. Unbelievably, he was never sent off or booked during his career. He won 5 caps for Scotland and he tasted victory and defeat in Wembley Finals. In his first season at Preston, his team were promoted behind Town to the First Division. He played for a while post-war and appeared in the Preston side that beat Town 2-3 in September ‘46. Altogether he played 300 games for Preston but, despite that loyalty, Preston would not release him from his contract. Thus, he took over the management of Carlisle United, taking them to 15th, ninth and then narrowly missing out on promotion. Shankly took over the Town team that had slipped from the First Division to Division 3 North over a dismal four-season period. His influence was immediate with six splendid signings and his penchant for fitness, his strict attitude to discipline and his fanaticism helped to salvage the careers of six

of the retained players. The team finished second and as such created two records. Firstly, the record run by a Town side of 11 consecutive victories and secondly the 66 points in 51/52 remains the highest number of points obtained by a side not winning promotion from the now defunct Third North.
system to keep the crowd informed. The new orange programme arrived for season 52/53. The team was unbeaten until the tenth fixture. Only two defeats by Christmas but the Christmas/New Year programme only yielded two points from six games with the team second after 24 matches. Unwisely Shankly remained loyal to his veterans but the injuries to “Pound for pound and class for class, the Jimmy Bloomer and a newcomer Fred best football team I have seen in England Smith were crucial. Shankly bemoaned since the war... Everything was measured, the lack of cohesion among the players, planned and perfected and you could not the unbalanced attack with creativity and wish to see more entertaining football”. marksmanship rarely present. Only one win THE ORANGE MARINER WAS gleaned from the last nine away games. This was the best team I have seen at INTRODUCED DURING BILL The signing of the free-scoring Harry Hart Blundell Park. The side that won 11 games SHANKLY’S SPELL out of 11, injuries excepted, was Tweedy; was a disaster with three goals in 13 games. Brown, Galbraith; Scotson, McMillan, Bill chastised spectators who “make it Johnston; Lloyd, Bloomer, Cairns, Hernon, unpleasant for players who are going through a sticky Maddison. Vastly experienced, they patch. Some players have been severely criticised”. had the qualities needed to make Sibling rivalry was prominent with a friendly against that near-perfect team with Bill’s brother Bob’s team from Falkirk that we won, the emphasis on developing but a distraction and, to illustrate how quickly the attacks through midfield, team was ageing, we played Tweedy and Cairns in exploiting the skills on one League game with both over 40. Shanks lived the ball of each player, for football and his ability to raise a Scottish side for with the left side quartet five-a-side football from the Mariners players during of Galbraith, Hernon, training magnified his competitive nature. He even Maddison and Johnston sneaked a game with the Reserves one holiday period. the jewel in the crown. The season started with expectations would have been ours. low with the club less favourably placed than it had With ten men we were been since 1927/28. Shankly depressingly stated in the winning 2-1! Telegraph Annual that “With the players at our disposal Blundell Park was a useful team can be put in the field”. The spark had buzzing. Shankly gone. Shankly eventually resigned on the 2nd Jan 1954 organised a PA but the team was barely recognisable from the side that had done so well two years earlier. Lack of both funds and ambition were his reasons for his departure. Ironically five days after his resignation Town played their famous 5-5 third round FA Cup tie with Fulham with Jimmy Bloomer equalising in the final GRIMSBY TOWN 1952-53 minute.

NEW DATES AND KICK-OFF CHANGES
This weekend’s Women’s Midlands Football League fixture against Chesterfield FC Women has been switched to Cleethorpes Town’s Myenergi Stadium. Chesterfield are currently league leaders, three points ahead of Town, but they have played one game more. They are fancied as one of the favourites to win promotion this season, and so it is a crucial game that the Mariners will be looking to take another three points from. Spectators are welcome to come and get behind the team with their support, with social distancing requirements in place as well as track and trace in operation. Manager Dale Houlston said: “This is one of the games we’ve been really looking forward to. As soon as the fixtures were published we were looking for the Chesterfield home game as one of the key games of the season. It would be fantastic to see as many Mariners fans as possible coming along to get behind us. As always the support we receive is really appreciated as the interest in watching women’s football in Grimsby continues to grow. The positivity around the women’s team has been superb, and I would love to see even more people coming to get behind us”.
Our home fixture vs Bradford City has been rescheduled following our recent postponement. The fixture will now take place at Blundell Park on Tuesday 22nd December with a 7pm kick-off. Also, the kick-off times for the following games have been brought forward to 7pm after agreements were reached between the clubs associated with the respective fixtures: Forest Green Rovers (A) Tuesday 27th October - 7pm kick-off Barrow (H) Tuesday 3rd November - 7pm kick-off WLEY TOWN FC CRA WEST

BOYD ON ENGLAND STANDBY Our young forward, Louis Boyd, is on the standby list for England U17’s training camp next week. If the 15-year-old gets the call, he will spend two days at St George’s Park from the 26th-28th of October. Louis made a scoring debut for the Mariners against Harrogate Town last month and became the youngest ever player to play for the club.

MARINERS MEMORIES:
“PUT IT IN THE CO 28 years ago this weekend, a thunderbolt by Jim Dobbin earned the Mariners a headline-grabbing victory against Newcastle United at St James’ Park. Lee Johnson was one of the 600 Town fans in the Leazes End corner that afternoon. Jim Dobbin’s sweet 90th minute strike at St James’s Park on 24th October 1992 which spectacularly ended Newcastle United’s winning streak at the start of that season is well known to most supporters of Grimsby Town Football Club. Clive Mendonca holds the ball up on Town’s left, rolls a square pass to Dave Gilbert on his inside, who in turn tees up Dobbin centrally 25 yards out. The first time hit that followed was stunning in many ways - technically superb and using the outside of his right foot to cut across the ball and send it arrowing into the top left-hand corner of Tommy Wright’s goal. Newcastle had previously won each of their first twelve league games of the season and were on the brink of an English League record of thirteen straight wins. Managed by Geordie folk-hero Kevin Keegan, they had spent lavishly by 1992 standards in pre-season. Almost two million pounds being invested in new signings Barry Venison, Paul Bracewell, Robert Lee and John Beresford. Their last game had seen them win 2-1 away at Roker Park against fierce local rivals Sunderland. They were on the crest of a Keegan inspired wave and St James’ Park was packed with an expectant 30,000 crowd ready to celebrate a record-breaking win on what was to become for them a championship winning season.
30
RNER, JIM!” Town on the other hand were in their second season in the second flight under Alan Buckley. Their first, after back to back promotions, had seen them only secure survival on the last day of the season after a tricky introduction to the higher level. Ironically, Newcastle, latterly under Keegan after the sacking of Ossie Ardilles, had themselves similarly narrowly avoided relegation on the very same day. Town’s first twelve games of the current season had yielded the same amount of points, but a recent Buckley acquisition had caused a bit of a stir around Blundell Park. Former England international goalkeeper Dave Beasant had been brought in on loan from First Division Chelsea due to Rhys Wilmot’s suspension for his sending off at Notts County. A couple of highly publicised howlers had made him persona non grata at Stamford Bridge and led him to seek relative anonymity in Cleethorpes. Beasant had been a mainstay in Wimbledon’s rise to FA Cup winning prominence before briefly joining Newcastle prior to his move to Chelsea.
So it was that Beasant suddenly found himself lining up against his rampant old side for his bottom-half of the table new one after a very ignominious few weeks. On the face of it the omens weren’t particularly good. The game that day didn’t require Beasant to be anywhere near his best however - Town played magnificently. Other than a couple of scares, Town largely silenced the home crowd and enjoyed long periods of control. In fact, it was Dobbin himself who came closest to a goal in a goalless first half when his speculative chip after confusion in the Newcastle defence hit the top of the crossbar with keeper Wright struggling. Little by little, the 600 all-ticket Town fans sandwiched in the tight open corner made themselves heard as Alan Buckley’s side grew in confidence. Paul Futcher marshalled Town’s defence so well that Newcastle’s attacking threat was largely snuffed out and left Beasant little more than a spectator. As the game drew to a close, there was a celebratory air in the away corner as Town were on the brink of a fine result. Possession was cheered as the clock ticked by, and then came the long pass out of defence from Paul Futcher which found an isolated Clive Mendonca to initiate the passage of play that led to the only goal of the game. Keegan was gracious in defeat, choosing to laud the playing style of Buckley’s team. Buckley was in turn humble in victory. Even in the direct aftermath of the result Newcastle’s support showed appreciation for their teams’ run rather than berating their performance on the day. Football as it ought to be. Town went on to finish 9th in the table that season and Beasant enjoyed a very successful and confidence boosting loan spell during which he played a large part (and at 6ft 4 inches I do mean large!) in a further four wins and a draw. Newcastle clinched their title in the return fixture at Blundell Park in May in another very memorable game.
Illustration: The Graphic Bomb
There’s something about this game that sets it apart from similar last gasp wins at Everton in 1984/85 and Liverpool in 2001/02. However exhilarating, there had been differing elements of smash and grab about both of the Merseyside results. The one on Tyneside was far from that.
