IN CHARGE:
WAYNE BROWN WELCOME BACK TO PARK DRIVE FOR THIS EVENING’S FIXTURE WHERE WE WELCOME GRAYS ATHLETIC. AFTER EXITING THE FA CUP AND OUR FIXTURE ON BANK HOLIDAY MONDAY BEING POSTPONED, WE HAVE GONE THROUGH A STRANGE PERIOD WITHOUT A COMPETITIVE FIXTURE. HOWEVER, WE HAVE MANAGED TO ARRANGE SEVERAL FRIENDLIES TO GET MUCH-NEED MINUTES INTO LEGS FOR THE FULL SQUAD AGAINST ARSENAL U19s AND IPSWICH TOWN, RESPECTIVELY.
Today I’d like to extend a warm welcome to Paul and his Grays side, today’s match officials and the supporters of both teams. Paul has taken over Grays following the retirement of Jim Cooper. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Jim on his career in football and wish him all the best in his retirement. Jim has contributed a huge amount to non-league football over the years and I’m sure his passion and character will be missed in the non-league circuit. After the disappointing exit in the FA Cup, I was pleased to bounce back against Stowmarket with three points as we now focus on the goal in hand, which is to get promoted out of this division. After going behind, the lads showed great character to respond quickly and to find the extra quality we needed to collect three points. I was delighted for Kempy, who has carried his pre-season form into the competitive season and long may it continue.
a couple of occasions in the FA Cup and the FA Trophy respectively, despite only playing a handful of games. Both of the games were close affairs, extremely tough and today will be no different. Grays have had a great start to the season and I am sure, come the end of the campaign, they will be there or thereabouts in the battle for promotion. Your support has been fantastic so far this season, our attendances continue to remain high and long may it continue. So, please continue to bring your best voices, make lots of noise and cheer the boys on as much as you can - hopefully we will reward you with three points at the end of the game. On Monday, we travel to Bowers & Pitsea to take on Hashtag United and it would be great to see as many of you there as possible to support the lads. Your support at home and on the road this season will be critical to any success we may have this year. I hope you enjoy tonight’s game.
Last season we went head-to-head with Grays, who currently sit top of the league, on

Maldon & Tiptree returned to winning ways in a five-goal thriller against Stowmarket Town. After the previous week’s defeat to Aveley in the Emirates FA Cup, Wayne Brown welcomed Martyn Stokes back to the starting eleven, whilst Malachi Napa made his first competitive start for the club in place of Bradley McClenaghan. League newcomers Stowmarket had enjoyed a positive start to the season, and they took the lead after just 26 minutes as Evan Collard fired past Ben McNamara to open the scoring for the afternoon.

The Jammers bounced back more or less immediately, though, as Napa played an inch-perfect ball in behind the visiting defence where the electric Scott Kemp beat the onrushing goalkeeper to the ball and rolled home into an empty net for his second goal in two league games. Wayne Brown’s side went close to edging in front shortly after their equaliser, as Napa attacked down the left before cutting inside and firing his effort just wide of the post. McNamara was on hand to keep the scores level as he made an impressive diving save to deny George Bugg for Stowmarket before, on the stroke of half-time, the hosts took the lead. John Gilbert found space on the left flank before working his way further upfield. He saw his effort on goal saved by Bradbrook, but the goalkeeper could do nothing as his parry fell kindly to Bryan Ifeanyi who buried his fourth goal of the season. Stowmarket were attacking with intent shortly after the half-time interval as they sought the equaliser. Reggie Lambe wasted a good chance, firing high over the bar from just yards out. Maldon created chances of their own too, and Charlee Hughes rounded the goalkeeper and delivered an inviting cross into the box, but nobody was on hand to divert into the empty net as the visitors cleared the danger. As Stowmarket continued to chase the leveller, they saw appeals for a penalty for handball waved away by the referee, whilst a succession of corners came to no avail. They found the breakthrough with just over a quarter of an hour to go, though, with Anthony Spyrou blocking McNamara’s clearance before finishing off to level the scores. Both sides pressed in a keenly-fought battle for all three points and, with just seven minutes left on the clock, it was Maldon who found the winning goal. Harry Taylor played in Kemp behind the Stowmarket defence and the forward kept his cool to calmly slot his effort past Bradbook in the away goal to secure maximum points for Brown’s men.

The roots of the modern day Grays Athletic can be traced back as far as 1888, although 1890 has become the de facto established formation date. The reasons for this disparity are almost certainly lost in the mists of time. Grays Athletic therefore celebrated its centenary in 1990, played at The Recreation Ground, Bridge Road from 1906 to 2010, and became members of the Athenian League in 1912. Grays became very strong after the Second World War, winning the Essex Senior Cup in 1945 and winning the Corinthian League and Cup in 1946. They rejoined the Athenian League in 1958 where they remained until 1983. In 1981 the Club Patron Mr Ron Billings purchased the ground and the Club was reformed as a Limited Company in 1982 under the guidance of Jeff and Fred Saxton. In 1983 a fire destroyed the 400-seater stand that included the dressing and kit rooms. Ron Billings came to the rescue by building the Ball Court Complex that included dressing rooms, club room and bar.Grays went on to become Isthmian Division 2 Champions in 1985.

The 1987-88 season saw the Club promoted to the then Vauxhall Opel Premier League after amassing 100 points. They then won the Essex Senior Cup and the Essex Thameside Trophy. A great FA Cup run in 1988-89 ended in the First Round proper, losing 2-0 away at Bath City. Grays won the League Cup, defeating Enfield in 1991-92. In 1993-94 and 1994-95 the Club won the Essex Senior Cup by defeating Billericay Town on both occasions. Relegated to Division One in 1997, they returned to the Premier Division in 1999-00. The FA Cup campaign in 2000-01 ended with defeat in the First Round proper for the third time, losing 4-0 away at Reading. This signalled the start of major changes with Mike Woodward installed as Director of Football, Craig Edwards as Manager and the departure of Jeff and Fred Saxton after 25 years of loyal service. Season 2002-03 started poorly and saw Edwards depart, being replaced by Mark Stimson
as player manager who appointed Scott Barrett as his assistant. Ahead of the 2003-04 season, the Club made the bold decision to turn most of the players into full time professionals, with the majority of players in their early twenties. Despite being knocked out of the FA Cup in the second qualifying round, 2004-05 became the most successful in the Club’s history. Stimson and his players won a number of manager and player of the month awards, with three players being called into the England National XI squad: Stuart Thurgood, Mitchell Cole and Dennis Oli. The ultimate success
being crowned League Champions of the Nationwide Conference South and winning the FA Trophy; beating Hucknall Town on penalties at Villa Park. Additionally, the Recreation Ground had been upgraded sufficiently to allow for promotion into the Nationwide Conference for season 2005-06. Mark Stimson’s philosophy of entertaining the crowds proved to be very successful with a blend of youthful exuberance and the outstanding quality of the more experienced players. Having equalled the Conference record of Kettering Town and going unbeaten in the first 15 fixtures of the season, both manager and players alike won several monthly awards. A contentious 3-0 defeat at the hands of Mansfield Town in the FA Cup was put to one side as the team turned their attention to the FA Trophy and the league. The Club’s first season in the top flight of non-league ended in disappointment as they finished 3rd in the league, and went on to lose 5-4 on aggregate to Halifax Town in the play-off semi-finals. The team put the loss behind them as they won a second successive FA Trophy, this time winning 2-0 against Woking at Upton Park in front of more than 8,000 of their own fans in an attendance of nearly 15,000. Following Mark Stimson’s resignation, the Club appointed former European Cup winner Frank Gray to manage the side in the summer of 2006. Despite the pre-season expectations, Gray only lasted 18 matches before both Jamie Stuart and Mick Woodward had short spells in charge of the first team. Andy King was appointed manager, but his spell was short-lived and he left shortly afterwards, taking control of just seven matches. Justin Edinburgh was the club’s 4th manager of the season, and under his leadership the Club reached the FA Trophy semi-finals where they lost to
MARK STIMSON
eventual winners Stevenage Borough. Survival in the League went to the last day of the season and despite losing 1-0 to Morecambe, the club stayed up courtesy of other results going their way. An extremely indifferent 2007-08 campaign ultimately led to the Edinburgh’s departure, before once again Mick Woodward took the reins with Gary Phillips as his assistant. With only three defeats in the final 17 games, Grays only ended 11 points outside the playoffs. The management led the side into the following season, but Mick Woodward stepped down, and replaced himself with Wayne Burnett who stayed in the job for four months before leaving the Club. Gary Phillips was promoted from assistant manager for the remainder of the season and the club finished in 19th position. 2009-10 turned out to be the fifth and final in the Conference Premier as both John Moncur (Chairman) and Andy Swallow (Chief Executive) joined the Club. Julian Dicks was brought in to replace Gary Phillips in September 2009, and Kenny Brown was soon appointed his assistant after resigning from his position as manager of CD Javea in Spain. The team struggled throughout the season, winning just five league matches and losing in their opening rounds of both the FA Cup and FA Trophy. The Blues did however manage to end the season on a high, winning two of their final three fixtures – the first of those away at AFC Wimbledon. In doing so, they recorded their first away league win for 16 months. The final day of the season was a sad affair for the Club, as we said farewell to the Recreation Ground after 114 years. Both the team and the fans did their part, as the team came back to beat Forest Green Rovers 2-1 with Allseny Cissoko scoring the last goal at the ground. Following relegation, the Club resigned from the Conference, deciding they would be unable to field a competitive team in the Conference South due to budget constraints. Following talks with both the FA and the Ryman League, the Club were eventually placed in the Ryman League Division One North.

The end of that season saw the expiry of the lease at the Recreation Ground, and without a home, the Club agreed a two-year deal to play at Rookery Hill, home of near neighbours East Thurrock United. The 2010-11 season was our first at this level for ten years, and despite having a solid start to the league campaign, a lack of consistency was evident throughout the remainder of the season which meant the team came up short in several matches, finally finishing in tenth position. Following the disappointing campaign, Julian Dicks and Kenny Brown left the club by mutual consent and the one-time Football League player and ex-Thurrock manager Hakan Hayrettin, was appointed as manager with his assistant Hassan Oktay for the 2011-12 season. With Hakan appointed, the remit was to challenge for a playoff place. Despite a few below par performances, the Club secured their playoff place on the penultimate weekend, meeting Enfield Town in the semi-final. Trailing 2-0 with ten minutes left, the team managed to force extra time with two late penalties. Unfortunately, with the match still level after extra time it was decided on penalties, with Grays losing 3-1. The 2012-13 season was a very successful one for the Club. It started with a move to another temporary home, in Rush Green, Romford in partnership with West Ham United. The ground and its facilities were improved, with the Premier League side responsible for the maintenance of the pitch. With just 4 league defeats and a run of form in the second half of the season which brought with it 18 successive league wins, the Club won the league with three matches to spare, finishing with a club record of 102 points. Two days after the title was secured, the side had the chance to complete the double, however they fell just short in the Essex Senior Cup final, losing 2-1 to Conference South side, AFC Hornchurch. The summer of 2013 saw two big changes for the Club in a few short weeks. The stay at Rush Green was
10

JULIAN DICKS brought to an abrupt end, with nearneighbours Aveley stepping in with an offer of a groundshare at the last minute. Everyone at the club is grateful to the Aveley Board for this. A short time after it was announced that Hakan Hayrettin would be leaving to join Luton Town. Experienced central defender Ryan Kirby took on the role, assisted by his father Steve Kirby and club captain Lee Flynn. Season 2013-14 started with a great run of four straight victories in the Isthmian Premier Division including two against highly fancied teams and we led the League at the end of August. A solid start, but we all knew that to stay in that position would be a tough ask and so it proved, with only four wins in the next nine games. Joao Carlos and Jack West were scoring freely, but the team was leaking goals and by the end of September we were lying in mid-table. A return to the team of fans’ favourite Danny Bunce lifted the spirits of the supporters but the results still kept slipping away. A run of only five wins from October to the end of February saw Grays slip towards the relegation zone and a run of postponements due to heavy rain saw the mood within the camp at a low ebb. Even a run to the semi-finals of the League Cup couldn’t lift the gloom. Everything changed when prolific scorer Leroy Griffiths returned
to the Club almost ten years since leaving. His enthusiasm and character changed the Club’s fortunes and with several other new signings the team found their confidence and fought their way back up the table with wins at regular intervals with Carlos, Dagenham & Redbridge loanee Joel Nouble and new signing Chris Benjamin scoring plenty of goals. It took until the middle of April to catch up with the fixture backlog and the team had to play two or even three games a week, within which time they settled into a mid-table position - very commendable when you consider players have jobs outside football. The last game of the season saw the team lying in a safe position with a trip to high-flying Maidstone. Two coach loads of supporters and many more going by car meant that 150 fans travelled to Kent to cheer on the Blues. Although we lost a competitive game 2-1, everybody enjoyed the trip and gave the players a standing ovation at the final whistle, a great tribute to the thirty-odd players who had pulled on the shirt for our first season back in the Ryman Premier League in 10 years. By the time the players got together for their first training session for the 201415 season on 28 June, we already had another new manager in place. A few
days earlier Ryan Kirby had announced his resignation with family and business reasons leading to his decision. It showed once again the time required to manage a Club at our level. The Club acted quickly to interview candidates for his replacement and selected 35 year-old Jody Brown, who had stepped into the breach at Heybridge Swifts in December 2013 when their management duo left to take over at Chelmsford City. Jody moved quickly to assess the strength of the squad at his disposal and introduce a number of new players to assist the club in its plans to improve on and off the field. At the end of December 2014 Jody Brown departed to take over the manager’s role at Conference National side Welling FC. Player Mark Bentley was installed as assistant manager to Andy Swallow, before taking over the role of caretaker manager in January 2015. In February 2015 the Club announced that Mark had been appointed permanent manager for the remainder of the 2014-15 season. The season culminated in a superb run of results for the Club, including an unbeaten run of thirteen matches, which saw the team miss out on the playoffs as a result of a 94th minute goal elsewhere on the final day of the season. The 2015-16 season was a real seesaw affair. A great start saw us top of the League after 10 games and a good FA Cup run took the Blues to the final qualifying round, but we lost in a replay to National League side, Welling United. As we approached Christmas, there was unrest within the squad as a number of players were being encouraged by agents to look further afield in their careers. By the end of the season, 20 registered players had left the club, as owner, Andy Swallow, decided it was time to reduce his financial support for the Club. A run of ten straight defeats saw us finish in 15th place in the League, with many youngsters filling the gaps in the squad left by the departed players. After Andy Swallow announced that he was stepping back from the day to day running of the Club to concentrate his efforts on the long term plan to
relocate the Club back to Grays, a group of supporters set about creating a new Supporter Owned Club. A successful community share offer was launched at the end of June to demonstrate the club’s financial viability for the 2016-17 season. This gave the Club the confidence to apply to the Football Association and the Ryman League for permission to transfer its membership from the company that ran the Club to a new organisation - “Grays Athletic Community Football Club”. In November 2016 Grays Athletic Community Football Club received official confirmation from the FA and League that the transfer of ownership had been approved. The 2016-17 season was always going to be one of transition with the club moving from private to supporter ownership. On the field, former playing legend, Jamie Stuart returned as player/manager, but he had to start from scratch with a new squad of players. 60 players attended pre-season trials and a squad was eventually chosen to represent the Club in the Ryman Premier Division. It proved to be a difficult season, with the team spending most of the season at the bottom of the table. Relegation was confirmed with a 1-0 away defeat at Wingate and Finchley on 1 April 2017. Off the field, the Club was pleased with the galvanising effect supporter ownership was having, despite the prospect of a return to Isthmian Division One North football after four seasons in the Premier Division. 2017-18 was very disappointing even though Jamie Stuart brought three experienced former Grays’ players – midfielder, Barry Cogan and forwards, Dennis Oli and Jamie Slabber, into the fold in pre-season and later recruited former defenders, Richard Halle and Joe Bruce. We spent most of the season hovering around the top ten without really threatening the leading pack. By the end of March, we were on course to finish in the top half of the table, but a run of five consecutive defeats in April, saw us finish 16th out of 24. 2018/19 proved to be another “in and out” season, although we did flirt with a play-off position on a few occasions.
Towards the end of March 2019, with the club in ninth position in the league and ten games remaining, the board agreed to part company with Jamie Stuart and appointed the experienced former Metropolitan Police FC manager, Jim Cooper, supported by Paul Joynes as his assistant and Chris Bourne as coach. The last ten games saw some changes in playing personnel and we took sixteen points to finish seventh. Jim began to rebuild the squad with a good mix of experience and youth. He is very committed to working with our burgeoning youth section, which now boasts 27 teams. With three girls’ teams, veterans and even walking footballers, we can now provide allinclusive, all-ability football for ages from 4 to 75! At the League AGM in June 2019, the Club was delighted to receive two awards – the Community Club of the Year and the best Programme in the North Division for the 2018-19 season. 2019-20 was the season that… wasn’t. It started promisingly, fell away badly and finally ended sadly when the coronavirus caused our football to be called off in March 2020 and League records expunged. For the record, if not the record books, we were sitting in 14th place in the division with nine games left to play. The Covid-19 pandemic caused more cessations to competitive football in 2020-21 and, ultimately the season was curtailed, apparently to allow the few games that were played – six league games and four cup games for us – to stand in the record books. Again, for the record, we were eighth in the division after our last game on 28 October 2020, a 1-0 home win over Great Wakering Rovers. The Club’s principal objective remains to develop a new community football facility in the North Grays/Blackshots area of Thurrock and we are working closely with Thurrock Council, local schools, the County Football Association and developers to “Bring Grays Athletic back to Grays”. In the meantime, we continue to groundshare with Aveley FC at their superbly appointed Parkside Stadium.

THE SQUAD JOSEPH AGUNBIADE – WINGER Joseph is a young, speedy winger who joined Grays in the close season of 2020. He started his career at Under 15/16 level with Reading. He completed his education at Shenfield High School and worked there on his game with our coach, Warren Fenton. An early highlight for the Blues was his first competitive goal – a stunning winner at Tilbury in October 2020, soon after he came on as a firsthalf substitute, for injured club legend, Joao Carlos. PAT AHERN – DEFENDER Pat joined the Blues in August 2020, but suffered a bad shoulder injury before lockdown in October 2020. He is a strong defender who is comfortable at centre half, but can play anywhere across the back line. He was captain at Witham Town and has also represented Brentwood Town. He is recovering from a shoulder injury. LANCE AKINS – DEFENDER Lance is an experienced central defender who will add quality to our back line. He was part of the very successful Maldon & Tiptree team who beat Leyton Orient in 2019, before losing narrowly to Newport County in the second round. He has also represented Witham Town, Tilbury, Coggeshall Town and Braintree Town. He made his debut for the Blues in our 2-1 pre-season win over Tilbury in the Stan Veness Trophy in July 2021. He suffered a serious ankle ligament injury in our first home game 2-1 win against Bury Town and will be out of action for some time. ANOINTED CHUKWU – STRIKER He represented Grays Athletic as a 16 year old youth player and trialled at Premier League clubs, Crystal Palace and Southampton during this time. “Chuks” joined the Academy 92 at Salford City in 2017 along with former Blue, Manny Ogunrinde and progressed to the senior squad, whilst also enjoying successful loan spells at Widnes FC and Ramsbottom United. On returning to the area, he signed for East Thurrock United, but joined Romford before the start of the 2019-20 season and signed for Grays on 16 October 2020.

LEWIS CLARK – DEFENDER Lewis joined Grays from Bowers & Pitsea, where he was instrumental in their march to the Isthmian League North title in 2019. He made a total of 117 appearances for the club. He joined up with Terry Spillane at Stansted and was part of the side that won the Essex Senior League in 2010 and were runners-up in the league, but won the League Cup in 2011. He moved to Redbridge with Spillane and after a successful season, Spillane moved to Maldon & Tiptree with his backroom staff and several players including Lewis. Our supporters will remember Lewis’s time at the club in 2009 and later during the 2014-15 season under the management of Jody Brown. He has also represented Heybridge Swifts. He joined Grays during the 2019 close season and was club captain for the last two seasons. DANNY GOULD – MIDFIELDER Danny was born in Ongar and was with Southend United for eight years as a youngster. He was released from the Roots Hall Academy and attended exit trials in Leicester when he caught the eye of Histon FC officials, where he completed his scholarship. The prolific striker has been a regular goal scorer during his career and was the Golden Boot/Top Goal Scorer Winner in the Non League National Game Awards for the 2018-19 season, after he bagged an amazing total of 43 goals for Bowers & Pitsea to help them achieve promotion to the Premier Division of the Isthmian League. He scored 79 goals in 134 appearances at the club. David has also represented Tilbury, Cheshunt, Hornchurch, Canvey Island, Wingate & Finchley, Eastbourne Borough and Thurrock. He also played for Blues boss Jim Cooper at Met Police FC. JACK MCQUEEN – DEFENDER After an impressive 2019 pre-season, Jack joined Grays from Barking, where he made his first-team debut as a seventeen-year-old in March 2018. He also represented Essex in the 2018 South East Counties Championships where they lost in the final to Sussex. He made 34 appearances for Grays in the shortened 2019-20 campaign. After performing well in our 2020-21pre-season, we were very disappointed to lose him to fellow Step 4 side, Harlow Town in September 2020, just a few days before our first competitive game of the season. We were very pleased that he returned to Grays on 15 October 2020. RYAN MELAUGH – WINGER Ryan came through the ranks at Colchester United, earning a professional contract in 2012, before leaving in 2014. He dropped into non league and has played for Bishop’s Stortford, Billericay Town, Harlow Town and Tilbury. He signed for Canvey Island in 2017 and joined Grays in September 2020. He has also represented a string of Step 2 and 3 non league sides – Wingate & Finchley, Bishop’s Stortford, East Thurrock United, Ebbsfleet, Concord Rangers, Cheshunt, Romford and Harlow. He was with Margate last season in the Pitching In Premier Division. Freddy comes from a footballing family. In the following season, he became an important member of the impressive Cray Wanderers squad. PAST FROM THE
DOH RYAN GON . 11 APPS: 29 GLS:
When did you play for the Jammers and who was in charge? I joined the club when Kevin Horlock was in charge, around 2017 I think. What a great manager he was, by the way! Best player you played with whilst with Maldon? The best player for me whilst I was with the club had to be Junior Ogedi-Uzokwe – he was and still is, a top striker. Junior and I really knew how to link up, we built a great partnership and really understood each other. What is your best memory whilst playing for the club? It has to be scoring a hat-trick against Heybridge Swifts, our rivals, on Boxing Day – I will never forget that day.

MALDON & TIPTREE vs GRAYS ATHLETIC
What is your worst memory whilst playing for the Jammers? To be honest, I don’t have any. That said, leaving half way through the season to join Colchester United was hard and a tough decision for me, as I knew we were capable of promotion with the side we had that season. Away from Park Drive, your most enjoyable moment in football? Signing my first professional contract at the age of 17 has to be the best moment for me - that was a very happy day. What team are you playing for now? Or, if you’ve stopped playing, what are you up to these days? Currently, I am playing for my local side Whyteleafe in the Isthmian South – I am enjoying scoring goals again. My plan is still to get myself back into the professional game, so hopefully I can get back to where I feel I belong.

MALDON & TIPTREE
CLUB HISTORY
In 2009, Ed Garty took over the ownership of Maldon Town from Michael Kirkham, whilst still in charge of running Tiptree United and installed Alan Brockhouse as Maldon Town’s new chairman. Following the takeover, Colin Wallington returned for a second spell in charge of Maldon Town, leaving his post as Tiptree United manager immediately. Colin previously managed Maldon Town from 2003 until 2007, having achieved promotion in the 200506 via the play-off final. Having left Maldon in 2007, Colin went on to manage Tiptree United where he achieved promotion winning the

Eastern Counties Division One title in the 2007/08 season. Until the conclusion of the 2009/10 season both Maldon Town & Tiptree United played their home games at Park Drive, under a ground share arrangement. In the summer of 2010, Maldon Town & Tiptree United amalgamated to form, Maldon & Tiptree Football Club, under the ownership of Ed Garty. As a result of the amalgamation, Tiptree United withdrew from the Essex Senior League, resulting in the club’s last ever fixture being a 3-1 defeat against Enfield 1893 on 24 April 2010. Maldon & Tiptree took
the place of Maldon Town in the Isthmian Division One North. Following the retirement of Colin Wallington, Assistant Manager, Brad King and Glen Knight were appointed as the clubs JointManager. As the pair’s first managerial role, the new club witnessed wholesale changes with only a handful of players remaining who finished the season with Maldon Town and Tiptree United, respectively. The 2010-11 campaign saw the new club remain in or around the play-off positions for the majority of the season, finishing in eighth
place to finish the season with sixty-three points. Despite the high turnover of players, the good standard of football was maintained and it was in the end, a disappointing end to the season, for the club to fall away in the later stages of the season when suspensions and injuries eventually took their toll to leave the club frustratingly short of the play-off positions at the end of April. The 2011-12 season, proved to not be so successful and in November 2011, King and Knight were relieved of their duties with immediate effect. Ex-Charlton professional Mike Flanagan was appointed as Caretaker Manager and remained in place until the end of the season, steering the club to a respectful mid-table finish, managing thirty-three games and finishing with a win percentage of 49.12%. At the start of the 2012-13 campaign, Ex-Stansted & Redbridge boss Terry Spillane was appointed as Manager, and Mike Flanagan departed the club. The change of management, once again brought wholesale changes with the playing squad. Ex Tiptree United manager, Jody was brought to the club as Terry’s Assistant Manager. After a fantastic and unbeaten start to the season, the club found themselves at the top of the table but an incredible run by eventual Champions Grays Athletic meant Maldon had to settle for a place in the play-offs – Terry’s side remained unbeaten until Boxing Day, when they lost away from home against local rivals Heybridge Swifts. Disappointment came in the play-off final however when they lost a two goal lead to draw with Thamesmead Town, who thenwent on to win the final,on penalties.
After a disappointing end to the previous season, Terry Spillane oversaw more wholesale changes in the playing squad, including the departure of Assistant Manager, Jody Brown. Despite the changes, Maldon finished in ninth position with seventy-six points, winning twenty-one games. More changes to the playing staff, resulted in poor start to the 2014-15 season, and the club parted ways with Spillane in September 2014, with Chairman, Ed Garty takeover as Caretaker Manager, for three games. At the end of September 2014, Alan Kimble was appointed as manager and remained in charge for the remainder of the season, however the side struggled and more changes in the playing staff occurred. Maldon finished the season in nineteenth place with only forty-nine points. During the 2014-15 season, Media Officer at the time, Richard Buckby ran a competition for supporters to vote for a club nickname, with the options The River Boys, The Marshmen, The Mudmen and The Jammers available. The vote took place in January 2015 and was featured on National Radio station, TalkSport, with the The Jammers winning the vote with over 50% and being confirmed as the clubs new nickname. Following the completion of the 2014-15 season, the club linked with Colchester United and the two clubs formed close ties, which resulted in ex Ipswich Town midfielder, David Wright being appointed as First Team Manager. Wright remained in charge until December 2015 as he was appointed Assistant Manager of Colchester United. Liam Bailey took charge of the First Team on
a temporary basis, only managing one game, which finished four-all against Tilbury on Boxing Day in 2015. Moving into 2016, exLeiston Manager, Steve Ball was appointed First Team Manager and steered the club to a respectable finish in the league table climbing to seventh place, only missing out on the play-off places by nine points. In the closed season, a change of Management at Colchester United saw Steve Ball appointed as their Assistant Manager, leaving his position of Maldon & Tiptree Manager as a result. Ex-Manchester City midfielder, Kevin Horlock was then appointed as First Team manager ahead of the 2016-17 campaign and for the majority of the season, the Jammers sat at the top of the table before slipping away to finish in second place. Horlock’s side managed to reach the play-off final, however lost to Thurrock one-nil. The following campaign was not quite as successful for Horlock, with Maldon finishing just outside the play-off places in seventh place, with sixty-nine points. After managing 112 games, Kevin Horlock departed in the closed season and was replaced by ex-Colchester defender, Wayne Brown. In Brown’s first season in charge, the 2018-19 season, the Jammers finished in second place and reached the play-off final, but lost on penalties against local rivals, Heybridge Swifts. The 2019-20 season was one to remember for the club, but for the right and wrong reasons. The club achieved great things in the Emirates FA Cup. Having reached the First Round proper of the competition, Maldon beat League Two side, Leyton Orient away from home, taking over 600

fans to the home of The O’s, with the goals coming from Danny Parish and a superb solo goal from Jorome Slew. In the second round proper, Maldon were drawn against Football League side, Newport County with the game being shown live on National Television– with the Jammers only beaten by the League Two side, with a goal in stoppage time, with the game finishing 1-0. A record attendance of 1876 was recorded. However, the 2019-20 season will also be remembered for the wrong reasons. After impressive performances on the field, the Jammers found themselves top of the Isthmian Division One North, thirteen points clear with four games in hand, when disaster struck. With a global pandemic declared, as a result of Coronavirus, the league competition was formally abandoned on 26 March 2020, with all results from the season being expunged, and no promotion or relegation taking place to, from, or within the division. The club were denied a chance of promotion and forced to remain in the Division One North for the 2020-21 season.
ED GARTY STEPPED DOWN AS CHAIRMAN IN OCTOBER 2020 Following the disappointing end to the 2019-20 season, Wayne Brown remained in charge of the club and wholesale changes in the playing squad occurred again, with a number of the previous season’s squad securing transfers to clubs higher up the football pyramid. The Jammers were dealt a big blow in October 2020 when owner and Chairman Ed Garty stood down from his position with immediate effect, ending a challenging ten years at the helm. After a period of uncertainty for

the football club, General Manager Ron Dangerfield was confirmed as the new Chairman, with Richard Cowling taking ownership of the football club. Just like the 2019-20 season, the 2020-21 campaign was terminated with promotion and relegation denied for all the sides competing in the Division One North. However, prior to the curtailment the Jammers had reached the Emirates FA Cup First Round for the second successive season, this time losing to Morecambe 1-0 in front of the television cameras. Brown’s side also achieved their longest ever run in the Buildbase FA Trophy, eventually losing to Gloucester City. The Jammers were only able to play in five league games, finishing in third place before the season was curtailed. Heading in to the 2021/22 season, Wayne Brown remains in charge of the first team and is now the club’s longest-serving manager, holding the record for the most games managed in charge of Maldon & Tiptree Football Club.

The defender started out at Brentford before spending time on the books of Bristol City, Erith & Belvedere, Greenwich Borough, Staines Town and Whitehawk.
