CHAPLAIN'S CHAPTER

ESSEX YOUNG FARMERS WINTER 2020

Hello everyone! I hope that you are all keeping well during these strange times. I know it has been a particularly difficult time for some people so wanted to remind you that we have our lovely chaplain Janet who is more than happy for any of you to contact her for a chat or to ask for prayer. So as the John Lewis advert says, let us all “give a little love” this year, look out for one another and try to stay positive until we are able to meet in the way we would all like to again. A very merry Christmas to you all and I hope to see you in the New Year.

Love, Flick x

Hi Everyone, What an absolutely crazy 2020 we’ve all had and even with the looming Lockdown 2.0 Dunmow has been extremely busy with virtual competitions, quizzes and a few great meetings in there too.

LIV BEER

Following in the footsteps of Jack Waterfield our Club Chairman and his Secretary Zoe Barton is Andrew Hutley our new Club Chairman and his Secretary Molly Lenton we’ve also got some great new members on our committee too. This year we’ve been keen to get as much involvement as we can and started with a game’s night, it was a great way to see everyone (socially distanced) and have some fun too. We’ve also completed a virtual pumpkin carving competition and held our Annual Fireworks display. Following on from the £2,000 raised last year for Evie’s Angels through our Harvest Supper and Christmas tree collection, Dunmow are keen to raise as much money and we can this year especially as it has been so challenging for some people. Something in which the Dunmow boys are doing at the moment is the Movember challenge which is towards The Mind Charity all with an aim to raise awareness towards men’s mental health and support those with prostate or testicular cancer. So far, we have raised £780 and even got the subscribers and our County President Miles Leeder involved. There will most definitely be some brilliant pictures to follow. As a club we do hope everyone is keeping safe and doing well! And hopefully we will be back and what we do best very soon.

Liv xx FOLLOWING ON FROM THE £2,000 RAISED LAST YEAR FOR EVIE’S ANGELS THROUGH OUR HARVEST SUPPER AND CHRISTMAS TREE COLLECTION, DUNMOW ARE KEEN TO RAISE AS MUCH MONEY AND WE CAN THIS YEAR ESPECIALLY AS IT HAS BEEN SO CHALLENGING FOR SOME PEOPLE 04

Hi everyone, Well what a year this has been so far, not like any other that is for sure and first and foremost we really hope you and your families are safe and well during this difficult time!

IT IS SAFE TO SAY THAT A LOT OF OUR MEMBERS ARE MISSING THE PARTIES, BALLS AND OF COURSE, TUG OF WAR - WE CANNOT WAIT TO GIVE OUR NEW MEMBERS A TASTE OF THE ROPE!

Halstead Young Farmers have really taken this new way of life in our stride trying to keep up the spirits within our club. Having had lots of new faces join us we have tried to keep everything as fresh and exciting as we can sticking to government guidelines, so we can show our potential new members just what Essex Young Farmers is all about. Before the second lockdown, we were meeting weekly at The Bell Inn pub every Thursday socially distanced of course and holding club socials such as bingo night and games night. We held our first committee meeting which was really productive and we chose our charity for this year which is Young MINDS. Although we wont be able to do our usual charity events this year, our club members have been working really hard to make Christmas Wreaths and decorations to sell leading up to Christmas and it is great to see as many of us getting involved! We really hope that after Christmas we can start doing what Essex Young Farmers do best and getting a bit more normality in our lives! It is safe to say that a lot of our members are missing the parties, balls and of course, tug of war - we cannot wait to give our new members a taste of the rope! You can keep up to date on what we get up to via our instagram and Facebook page and we cannot wait to see you all again! If you are thinking about joining, don’t let the current situation put you off, it is great having such amazing people around even if that is virtually!

‘We found a train’ - SYFC scavenger hunt

I know what you’re thinking. It’s alright, they live together!

Hello all,

JACK GARWOOD

As I sit at this old typewriter I look out over a very wet and rather windy Dengie and think about the summer, and wasn’t it a summer to remember. Although it may not have been quite the spring and summer we were all hoping for Southminster certainly made the best of it.

Grape picking is always a popular meet on the Dengie

It was a rough end to the year and I think I should begin by saying congratulations to Lizzy for leading the club through it all with great positivity, and also for once again taking the role on. We hope that looking forward she can get a whole good year from the two! So as the world around us ground to a halt Southminster YFC joined the masses and took to zoom, psych, kahoot and a smattering of other apps to keep everyone talking and make sure that all the members had a Tuesday night to look forward to. As well as this Lizzy made everyone a pack with a couple of drinks, chocolates and some seeds. We then had a competition on our hands, though it seems not much of one, doesn’t seem we are the gardening types. Well done to Drew for tallest sunflower and Megan for the best hollyhock!

A spooky offering, and then there are the pumpkins!

Through all of this rules were coming and going, during one such loosening in restrictions

Making S’mores in a pizza oven, it’s not cheating it’s thinking outside the box!

we said we should all go for a dog walk at the same time, alone together if you will, and would you believe by some fluke we all choose the very same location. It was nice to have a catch up even if from 2 meters. Not long after that we were able to meet properly, though obviously cautiously and inline with guidelines supplied by NFYFC. In this time had a few weeks of dog walks, rounders, a scavenger hunt, grape picking, pumpkin carving and even a couple of bonfires. Thank you to everyone that invited us into their fields and to all those members for coming along and doing their bit to keep each other safe. In the midst of all of this though we had our AGM so as I finish up I’d like to take the chance to welcome in our new committee, some of us have stayed in last years roles but its fantastic to see new faces ready to lead the club into the new year. So I guess thats just about it from me, I hope you all have a wonderful festive period and eat far too much! I know I very much look forward to seeing you all in person whenever that may be!

The start of this young farmers year has been an interesting one to say the least! We ended last year in mid lockdown with nights consisting of plenty of zoom quizzes and the club taking on the likes of the toilet roll challenge! It was definitely a year to remember with the forthcoming one sure to be too!

AN ANNUAL EVENT IN ONGAR’S CALENDAR IS TO VISIT A POPULAR LOCAL VENUE, LASER MAYHEM; A CHANCE TO LET OFF SOME STEAM AND A BIT OF HEALTHY COMPETITION NEVER GOES AMISS! SADLY, THIS WAS ONE OF OUR LAST CLUB EVENTS BEFORE LIFE CAME TO A STANDSTILL ONCE AGAIN

One of our first events of this year was our annual AGM, where we elected our next chairman, Will Some of our newly-elected committee Spanton-Coates as well as Vice chair, Louisa Kenney! This year’s meeting was slightly different from previous as covid guidelines meant social distancing took place Government guidelines means only a limited and only a small handful of us were able number could attend however the night was to attend! Nonetheless it was still a great still thoroughly enjoyed by all. We would like success and we look forward to, as a club, as a club to thank Hatters Farm Pumpkins what can be done despite the current difficult for their donation of pumpkins to Ongar YFC times we are facing! pumpkin night! Due to covid guidelines, arranging club nights is trickier than usual, however Ongar YFC love a challenge! A popular night we held at the beginning of the young farmers year was bingo and was a good chance for members to catch up after a long time apart. Halloween night is always popular at Ongar, with the best carved pumpkin competition in full swing!

An annual event in Ongar’s calendar is to visit a popular local venue, laser mayhem; a chance to let off some steam and a bit of healthy competition never goes amiss! Sadly, this was one of our last club events before life came to a standstill once again. With the new year approaching; we look forward to the upcoming months with many fun and exciting ways to raise money for charities as well as create club nights where possible! If after reading this you’re wishing to join Ongar Young farmers club, please get in contact with Jess Faulkner to find out about membership with time and place for when we next will be meeting. We’re a club with members who work in a variety of roles in and outside of farming; so all are welcome! If you love parties but are also not afraid of getting stuck into a range of club activities such as public speaking training or going head to head with other clubs in the likes of our sport teams, please feel free to get in touch by contacting Jess on 07584164983.

Hello all, Unfortunately this year hasn’t gone to plan for anyone. I really hope everyone has been keeping safe! Due to the situation, Young farmers events haven’t been quite the same as usual (trust me Maldon Young Farmers are definitely missing the parties!)

GEORGIE FRENCH

WE ARE IN FULL PROGRESS OF PLANNING OUR CHRISTMAS TREE SELLING EVEN IF THIS WILL BE DONE BY ORDERS AND DROPPING THEM OFF AT HOUSES

Even when we were in lockdown, we kept in contact, whether that was a zoom call or a quiz on our group chat. We also completed our loo roll challenge (it’s on our Facebook if you haven’t seen it). Even in the busy Harvest season, and when we were able to, Maldon Young Farmers managed to fit in a few pub sessions in small groups. In September, we kicked off our Young Farmers year with our AGM. This was done in a traditional farming style in the barn, so social distancing could be maintained. Well done to all the new committee members that were elected. Since then, and when corona has allowed us to, Maldon Young Farmers have met to socialise with a few fun activities along the way. Throughout September and October, we have had a quiz night, which become a little competitive. We followed with a fun games night and a Bingo evening. Then unfortunately, in November, another lockdown hit all of us, so no meetings to report on. Every year, Maldon Young Farmers sell a lot of Christmas trees and this year will hopefully be no different. We are in full progress of planning our Christmas tree selling even if this will be done by orders and dropping them off at houses. Donations will be going to MIND charity, as we feel more than ever this years people’s mental health needs to be supported. Please keep in touch with us by checking our Facebook page out. Anyone that wishes to join Maldon Young Farmers, please contact our Chairman Jamie Marshall on 07542 923133. Merry Christmas and I wish everyone a better year in 2021! Keep safe!

CLUB CHAIRMAN Lucy Westwood

Hello Everyone! Ashdon & Saffron Walden Young Farmers has had a fab start to year! We have managed to adapt accordingly to the Covid-19 Guidelines and, hold some great meetings for our members in a safe and Covid Friendly way! Our first meeting in September was a Farm Tour followed by drinks and nibbles, which was held at Stocking Pelham Hall on the Herts/Essex border. This generated lots of new members and everyone really seemed to enjoy Young Farmers being back after such a long time absent!

LUCY HITCHCOCK

We had our Club AGM in the midst of September, Club President Miles Leeder kindly let us use his barn as a venue in Thaxted. We had final reports from last year’s committee before voting in the new candidates for this year’s committee. Big thanks must go to Lucy Westwood, last year’s Chairman for all her hard work and, Julia Magness, last year’s President for her constant support and wise words. Good luck to everyone on this year’s committee! In October, the club decided to set up a ‘pub’ in my garage at home as we could not meet anywhere else without the ‘rule of six’ being applied in public places. This was great as it allowed us to meet in groups of 15 + two leaders in a safe way yet, still have a relaxed pub feel! All the members have really appreciated and used the space to its full potential. We have had lots of socials including; a pub quiz, darts evening and Halloween themed drinks! On the Tuesday before the second lockdown commenced, we had a fireworks which was a fab way to end the last on face to face meetings for a while! Our Fundraising Rep and Last Year’s Chairman, Lucy Westwood handed a MASSIVE £6,600 to Herts & Essex Air Ambulance, our chosen charity for last year! Well done

to everyone who helped raise this huge amount of money for such a brilliant cause! We have picked two Charities to support this year: BEAT (Eating Disorders) and Children’s Liver Disease. They are both very close to two of our members hearts so, it was just too difficult to pick between them! Our first big fundraiser for them both is our Annual Christmas Tree Collection which will take place on then 3rd of January. We are very pleased how the Club has pulled together so far this year to make it work and hopefully, we can go all guns blazing in the New Year! Stay Safe, and have a Very Happy Christmas!

CLUB CHAIRMAN Oliver Weavers

Hi everyone, hope you’re all well and staying safe during these uncertain times. As I am sure will be the same for all clubs, it has been a very tough time for Colchester Young Farmers. The club has only been able to meet a few times in 2020 which has been tough for our members and for our fundraising efforts.

ERIN THOMAS

DURING THE YEAR, THE CLUB HAS TAKEN PART IN MANY VIRTUAL QUIZZES HOSTED BY DIFFERENT MEMBERS. THERE HAS ALSO BEEN A HALLOWEEN PARTY, A PUMPKIN CARVING EVENING, BINGO AND SEVERAL DRINKING GAMES NIGHTS… THE POWER OF TECHNOLOGY!

However, this hasn’t dampened the spirits of our members, who have still been meeting once, sometimes twice a week via video calls. During the year, the club has taken part in many virtual quizzes hosted by different members. There has also been a Halloween party, a pumpkin carving evening, bingo and several drinking games nights… the power of technology! We have even managed to gain a few new members this year, which is fantastic considering the circumstances. In terms of fundraising, it has been nigh-on impossible to organise any of our normal activities such as the Tractor Run and Muck Run. This hasn’t however stopped the club from coming up with some ‘out-ofthe-box’ ideas. In October, the club organised a virtual event where parents, subscribers and other members could vote, from a select few nominees, for who they wanted to see get covered in rotten pumpkins! It was a very successful event which raised £380 for this year’s charities; ABF The Soldier’s Charity and Prostate Cancer UK. Huge thanks must be given to Chris ‘Denz’ Scott, our Club Leader, who gained nearly 100% of the votes and was therefore subject to being covered in the rotten pumpkins (the video is on our Facebook page and is DEFINITELY worth a watch). Another massive thanks to Guy French, our Club President, who very kindly and willingly provided the rotten pumpkins to cover Denz in! And finally, thank you to everyone who donated towards the event! We have a few exciting upcoming activities via video call. On Monday 23rd of November, we have Ed Ford joining us to give the club a Farm Safety presentation. On Monday 7th December we have a ‘Mystery Chef’ cookery evening, where our members will be cooking alongside each other, following the guidance of a ‘mystery chef’…who could it be? That’s all for now, thanks for reading!

YF CLUB REPORT

Liz Bacon

Hello everyone, my name is Hannah and I am the Press Officer and Programmes and Activities rep for Wix Young Farmers this year. I have been a member of Young Farmers for six years now, five of those spent on the committee covering a range of roles from Show Rep to Secretary.

HANNAH MARSHALL

YOU HAVE BUILT THE FOUNDATIONS OF WHAT WE ARE NOW CALLING THE ‘NEW NORMAL’, AND HAVE PROVEN THAT YOUNG FARMERS CAN FACE ANY CHALLENGE HEAD-ON!

Firstly, I would like to congratulate all the people who held positions on the committees of not only Wix, but all the clubs, and the county last year, for what turned out to be a year that nobody could have imagined. Keeping members interested involved more organisation than a standard social at the pub, especially when it came down to thinking of different ideas and challenges each week. You have built the foundations of what we are now calling the ‘new normal’, and have proven that young farmers can face any challenge head-on! To kick start the year, Wix held their annual AGM, socially distanced of course, in a barn kindly hosted by the Fairley’s at New Hall Farm. This saw Liz Bacon handing the chairman reins over to Nathan Sprawling who introduced us to the rest of his committee. We also welcomed our new President, Fiz Marshall, and new Vice President, Mark Morton, who joins Jayne Marshall, following Nigel Dyson stepping down from his role of President. A big thank you to all the committee members of last year and good luck to those taking on roles this year! Our next meeting was a car treasure hunt starting at Normans Farm and finishing at The Haywain. We usually hold the car treasure hunt in the Summer as one of the last meetings of the year, but due to COVID restrictions, it was postponed. Thankfully, this made for a great socially distanced evening. We have since had our annual

pumpkin carving social, a joint Zoom quiz with Southminster, and an Autumn photo competition. The fundraising side of Young Farmers has unfortunately taken a bit of a kicking, with events such as our Spring Ball having to wait in the wings until restrictions have lifted. This hasn’t held us back though, we are in the process of compiling a Wix Young Farmers recipe book, as well as organising our charity Christmas Tree sale. With Christmas almost upon us, I would like to take the opportunity to wish everyone a safe and happy festive season and hope for a better year ahead!

COUNTY CHAIRMAN ELLIE GEMMILL

H

ello All!

Firstly let me introduce myself, I’m Ellie Gemmill and have been a Ongar Young Farmer since 2016 and have loved every minute of it and so I was super excited to take on the challenge of County Chairman this year! It has certainly been a tricky start to the Young Farmer year with Coronavirus around. Luckily we were able to get together between the two lockdowns where we had the Annual General Meeting held at Whitbreads Barn and saw the new committee voted in. Later in September we had the County Harvest Festival held at St. Peter’s church, Goldhanger which was hosted by RABI. It was great to meet a few members from each Essex agricultural organisation and may I say what a lovely service it was, given by Revd Janet Nicholls and The Rt Revd Roger Morris, Bishop of Colchester. County as a whole haven’t really had a chance to get all the clubs together for competitions or socials but I can assure you that we have a few things planned for when Government eases up restrictions. During

the pandemic I know it has made everyone lookout for one another and bought us closer more then ever and it has been really good to see the clubs try and be inventive and think outside the box for their club nights and fundraising ideas. I know through the second lockdown they’ve even got their craft kits out ready for Christmas, making the best out of a bad situation! For the new year County are hoping to have our very own “Bake Off” competition as I think everyone during lockdown has been practicing their culinary skills inspired by ‘The Great British Bake Off’. Hopefully in December we will have a drive-in Christmas Carol Service in a Covid friendly environment, held at Chelmsford City Racecourse on Sunday 13th December with a guest singer Nancy May. If you are keen for ‘Christmas Jingling without the Mingling’ then please remember to book, as I’m sure this will be a sell out event. In the meantime I hope you all keep safe and well, and have a very enjoyable Christmas and happy New Year!

COUNTY REPORTS

PRESIDENT’S REPORT MILES LEEDER

I

t has probably been the most challenging year that the Young Farmers movement has faced in our history and now thankfully there seems to be light at the end of the COVID tunnel. The pandemic has hit at the core of all social interaction which is the very reason we are associated with the Young Farmer Family. We have been fortunate to have been able to still meet on occasions through the different lockdown restrictions, in some form or another, but it has not been quite the same. All clubs have completed their AGMs and I congratulate the new committee members and those that are continuing in the role for another year. A particular congratulation goes to Ellie Gemmill who has taken on the role of County Chair and behind her, a very capable Committee. Sadly we also see the standing down of our County Treasurer this December. Marcus Bailey has been instrumental in managing the finances in these difficult times and his years of experience with F&GP, Eastern Area and National matters have made him the “go to” person for advice and information to steer us in the right direction. We hope that he will continue his support for a few more years and welcome the very able James Padfield as our new County Treasurer. It has been a time of difficult decisions and after many years of loyal service, it was necessary to restructure the staff of the Essex Federation. Short term pandemic issues and streamlining of the Federation itself necessitated a change in the way we run the County Office. Our gratitude goes to both Mary and Carole for their collective years of service to the Essex Federation. We look forward to the successful re-gathering of the Federation in the New Year with a new look in the Office. It is planned that we will have a new County Organise in the New Year and will hit the ground running in planning a full 2021 calendar of events to include the pinnacle of our year, the Young Farmers Show. The County AGM took a very different format this year but as with all events, we have tried to adapt with a very much scaled down meeting, no awards, trophies, guest speaker and social gathering afterwards. I wish all our members, subscribers, and sponsors a very Merry Christmas and look forward to a bumper and happy New Year.

COMPETITIONS PAIGE MITCHELL & CHARLOTTE THORNTON

Hi everyone, Hope you and your nearest are all keeping safe and well!

WE’RE HOPING THAT WE WILL SOON BE ABLE TO GET BACK ON TRACK WITH OUR COMPETITIONS SCHEDULE (IN LINE WITH GOVERNMENT GUIDANCE OF COURSE) AND GET A GREAT LINE-UP OF ACTIVITIES READY FOR YOU ALL TO JOIN IN WITH BY THE NEW YEAR

It hasn’t quite been the start to the Young Farmer year that we had hoped for, which means that unfortunately it has been rather quiet on the competitions front so far this year. However, we’re hoping that we will soon be able to get back on track with our competitions schedule (in line with government guidance of course) and get a great line-up of activities ready for you all to join in with by the New Year. Until then, keep safe and we look forward to hopefully being able to give you a bigger update in the next edition!

CHAPLAIN

CHAPLAIN’S CHAPTER

REVD JANET NICHOLLS

Dear friends, Thank you to those of you who have kept in touch during the lockdown. It’s always lovely to hear from you. As I write, we don’t know what will be allowed on Christmas Day but I‘m very excited to share some plans for 13th December! Thanks to the generosity of the team at Chelmsford City Racecourse, you are all invited to the Essex Farmers’ Drive-in Carol Service. An afternoon of ‘Christmas Jingling without the Mingling’ can be enjoyed from the warmth and comfort of your car (truck or tractor...). Many of you have worked to raise funds for FCN during the last few years. It’s a pleasure to work with this great charity to offer a Covidsafe Christmas event for everyone associated with farming in Essex. Opportunities to meet have been very limited during 2020, so I look forward to seeing you on the 13th December. Admission by tickets, booked in advance via Eventbrite at www.eventbrite.com/e/essexfarmers-drive-in-carol-service-jinglingwithout-the-mingling-tickets-129023391437 The tickets are free but we hope to boost funds for Essex Young Farmers, RABI and FCN with donations on the day. So get your Christmas jumpers out, warm up your vocal chords and prepare to jingle! And when 25th December arrives, I hope it brings some comfort and joy for you and your family. God Bless

Janet
