WAYNE BROWN WELCOME TO PARK DRIVE FOR TONIGHT’S FIXTURE AGAINST BASILDON UNITED. IT’S A GOOD FEELING TO HAVE BACK-TO-BACK LEAGUE GAMES AFTER A STOP-START PERIOD RECENTLY, DUE TO CUP GAMES AND POSTPONEMENTS. TONIGHT, I WOULD LIKE TO START OFF BY EXTENDING A WARM WELCOME TO JOHN, HIS BASILDON SIDE AND SUPPORTERS, ALONG WITH THIS EVENING’S MATCH OFFICIALS. I HOPE EVERYONE HAS A SAFE JOURNEY HOME AFTER THE GAME.

Since our last home fixture 18 days ago we have only played two league fixtures, however, we have suffered defeats in both games, conceding six goals and this is an issue that we as a team need to address. Football is a game about fine margins and in the last two games, the margins haven’t fallen in our favour. However, full credit goes to Hashtag United and Heybridge Swifts for their performances.
Tonight’s match will be a tough encounter against a Basildon side who will be difficult to break down and they have a good mix of experience and youth within their ranks.
Against Hashtag, in the first half we were not at our best. In the second half, we had two chances cleared off the goal line and overall, I was pleased with how the lads responded. The scoreline potentially was not a fair reflection on the second half. On a different day, I’m sure if one of our chances was converted the end result would have been different.
As the games now look to be coming around thick and fast, I am sure this will benefit the squad and hopefully we can look to build momentum over the next couple of weeks. Please keep up your impressive support - your support both at home and on the road in the early weeks of the season hasn’t gone unnoticed. Keep being our 12th man – we need you!
On Saturday at Heybridge, the team showed good character to come back twice after going behind. We tried to gain success in a different way and the team’s understanding of this was a little naive in the first half. In the second half, there appeared to be only one team in the ascendency, so it was disappointing to lose the game so late on. Although we want to win every game, it’s important that we do not lose football matches and I am sure our young group will learn from this.
On Saturday, we travel to Brentwood Town and the following week, we welcome Felixstowe & Walton United to Park Drive in the FA Trophy. I hope to see as many of you as possible at Brentwood at the weekend.
MALDON & TIPTREE vs BASILDON UNITED
They picked up a good point on the road last time out at Dereham, which is always a tough place to go and leave with points. We know they will provide a physical test and it will be a good battle.
I hope you enjoy tonight’s game. Wayne

FRIDAY 10TH SEPTEMBER | THE PITCHING IN ISTHMIAN LEAGUE NORTH | ATT: 352 Two goals from Charlee Hughes sealed all three points for the Jammers as they beat table-topping Grays Athletic by the odd goal in three. Wayne Brown’s side came into the game with only one available central defender, with both Joe Turpin and Harry Taylor unavailable. Striker Shomari Barnwell deputised in central defence. The Jammers opened the scoring after six minutes thanks to smart work by Lordon Akolbire, who was able to deliver a pinpoint cross to Hughes who converted from close range. Similar to the first half, Brown’s men scored early after the half-time break, this time after another seven minutes. Malachi Napa broke free down the right-hand side, before delivering a cross that fell kindly for Hughes, who bundled the ball home from close range for his second of the evening. With 15 minutes to go, Grays pulled a goal back through a goalmouth scramble, however the Jammers managed to see the game out to continue their recent good form and maintain their 100% record in the league.

CLUB NEWS
THREE NEW ADDITIONS TO WAYNE BROWN’S SQUAD Wayne Brown has continued shaping his Maldon & Tiptree squad in recent weeks, adding three further faces to the ranks. 25-year-old forward Brian Moses makes the move from Tilbury having become an established front-man at this level, scoring at a rate of better than one goal every three games over the past four seasons. The 6’ 7” target man, formerly of Tilbury, Cheshunt, Basildon, Waltham Forest, Grays and Redbridge, scored during a behindclosed-doors friendly for the Jammers before making his competitive debut in Saturday’s 3-2 defeat at Heybridge Swifts. Also turning out for the first time on Saturday was 18-year-old goalkeeper Ted Collins, who arrives at Park Drive on loan from Colchester United. Featuring in pre-season for Brown’s side, Collins has previously enjoyed a loan spell with Holland FC. Lastly, midfielder Sam Cornish returns to Park Drive having spent time on loan with the Jammers last term, also from Colchester. Cornish penned his first professional deal with the U’s in the summer and featured in pre-season at the JobServe Community Stadium. Having turned out seven times for Brown’s men during last season’s truncated fixture list, the young midfielder also found the net during an earlier loan stint in 2019/20 before that campaign was also curtailed early.
BARKING FIXTURE REARRANGED
A rearranged date for the Jammers’ home game versus Barking has been confirmed, after the original fixture was previously postponed due to Barking’s continued involvement in the Emirates FA Cup. Justin Gardner’s side will now visit Park Drive in seven days’ time on Tuesday 5th October, for a 7:45pm kick-off.

MONDAY 13TH SEPTEMBER | THE PITCHING IN ISTHMIAN LEAGUE NORTH | ATT: 372 Maldon & Tiptree suffered a rare defeat away from home in the league, courtesy of league newcomers Hashtag United. A strong crowd of 372 spectators watched on as the Jammers suffered their first away defeat in the league under Wayne Brown since 30th March 2019, a run of 17 games spanning four seasons. The Jammers found themselves behind in the 27th minute, thanks to a penalty from Kris Newby. After a positive reaction in the second half, Brown’s side had two efforts cleared off the line, before the home side scored twice in the last five minutes of the contest to kill the game off as the Jammers pushed for an equaliser. Lee Hursit scored from a long-range free-kick in the 86th minute, before Jesse Waller-Lassen completed the scoring in the 90th minute as he finished off a solo run from his own half. The defeat ended the Jammers’ perfect start to the new league campaign.

Basildon United were established in 1963 as a junior team named Armada Sports before becoming an adult club and adopting their current name in 1967. The club joined the Thurrock Thames-side Combination League for the 1967–68 season, before switching to the Reserves Division Two of the Greater London League in 1968. After finishing as runners-up in the division in 1969–70, they were promoted to Reserves Division One. In 1971, the Bees were founder members of the Essex Senior League (ESL). They finished as runners-up in 1972–73, before winning the league in 1976–77. The club went on to win the league for the next three seasons, as well winning the League Cup in 1977–78, before switching to the Athenian League in 1980.
MALDON & TIPTREE vs BASILDON UNITED
Having finished second in their first season in the Athenian League, Basildon joined Division Two of the Isthmian League for the 1981–82 season. In 1983–84 they won Division Two and were promoted to Division One. The club remained in Division One until being relegated at the end of the 1988–89 season when they finished second bottom of the Division and were demoted to Division Two North. In 1991, the Bees left the Isthmian League and dropped back into the Essex Senior League. They won the league and League Cup double in 1993–94, but did not take promotion to the Isthmian League. The club won the League Cup for a third time in 2016/17. After finishing as runnersup in the league in 2017–18, they were promoted to the Isthmian League’s North Division for the first time in 27 years.
LAST TIME OUT 0-0 Basildon were held to a goalless draw at Dereham Town ten days ago, recording a second successive point in the league. A tight encounter in Norfolk could have gone either way, but both sides were lacking the final ball and had to settle for a share of the spoils. Speaking after the game, Basildon boss John Guyton was full of praise for his Bees side: “I’m really pleased. We wanted three points, but we’ll take the point and well done to the boys. They were outstanding today. We’ve got injuries galore at the moment which is tough, but all fourteen who have been used today have been outstanding.
GARDINERS CLOSE
In 1970, Basildon United moved to Gardiners Close and the new ground was opened with a friendly match against West Ham in front of a crowd of 3,600, although they continued to play floodlit matches at the Gloucester Park Bowl until floodlights were installed at Gardiners Close. A covered standing area was built on one side of the pitch, but was removed by the end of the 1970s; a new, equally short-lived stand was built in its place in the 1980s with three steps of terracing. Two covered areas were also built on the other side of the pitch, one of which had seats installed after they were removed from Leytonstone’s Granleigh Road ground. Another smaller stand was later built between the two covered areas containing the directors box. Floodlights were installed in 1979 at a cost of £10,000 and inaugurated with a friendly match against Crystal Palace on 30 October, attracting a crowd of over 2,000. Plans were announced in 1995 to move to a new stadium on Courtauld Road next to the A127; however, the plans were dropped in 1997 due to complaints about the proposed development. Gardiners Close currently has a capacity of 2,000, of which 400 is seated and 1,000 covered.
“We were really good again today, but we’ve got to get back to finishing our chances. It’s as simple as that really. I said on Tuesday that we’ve got to start killing teams off, but it will come. It will go for us one day and, when it does, it won’t stop.” Basildon United XI: Tommy Dixon-Hodge Jermaine Anderson Louis Blair (Wicks 74’) Ben Steward Jacob Barlow Ben Brookes Luke Hirst Bertie Brayley (Glenister 69’) Connor Hammond (Balde 77’) Paul Shave Fahad Nyanja

SATURDAY 25TH SEPTEMBER | THE PITCHING IN ISTHMIAN LEAGUE NORTH | ATT: 464
Maldon & Tiptree suffered a derby day defeat, as Heybridge Swifts collected their first win of the season and inflicted a second successive defeat on Wayne Brown’s men.
Swifts did take the lead shortly afterwards, Andrew Fennell finding himself all alone in the box to get onto the end of an Archie McFadden cross. Fennell had plenty of time to blast the ball past the helpless Collins.
In their first game under new boss Steve Tilson, the hosts appeared to have a spring in their step and, arguably, Swifts should have been ahead in the opening stages. Debutant goalkeeper Ted Collins was on hand to make a number of impressive saves, though, to maintain parity for the Jammers for the opening quarter of an hour.
After a tough half an hour, the Jammers grew into the game as the half-time interval approached and they levelled the scores just minutes before the break. Smart play from Charlee Hughes and Lordon Akolbire saw a perfect cross land at the feet of Shomari Barnwell who buried the ball to take Maldon into the break on level terms.
14
MALDON & TIPTREE vs BASILDON UNITED
Despite starting the second half on the front foot, just six minutes into the half and Swifts were back in front. Dylan Logan cut in from the right-hand side for the hosts and Collins could only watch on as his shot took an unfortunate deflection to leave the loanee goalkeeper stranded. Brown’s side began to turn the screw in search of a second equalising goal for the afternoon, and Bryan Ifeanyi was denied by a smart save shortly afterwards. Substitute Malachi Napa forced a great stop from a long-range freekick before the second breakthrough came with just under twenty minutes remaining on the clock. It was Akolbire who again provided an inch-perfect cross, this time the ball falling for Hughes to convert the equalising goal and give both sides the target of maximum points for the game’s final third. Unable to capitalise on a number of set-pieces, Maldon were dealt a sucker punch in the 92nd minute, with Heybridge breaking at pace from a Maldon corner. Though Collins made a great save initially, Swifts kept the attack alive and flashed a ball across the six-yard box for Daniel Walker to tap home from close range for Swifts’ first win of the campaign.

CLUB HISTORY
In 2009, Ed Garty took over the ownership of Maldon Town from Michael Kirkham, whilst still in charge of running Tiptree United and installed Alan Brockhouse as Maldon Town’s new chairman. Following the takeover, Colin Wallington returned for a second spell in charge of Maldon Town, leaving his post as Tiptree United manager immediately. Colin previously managed Maldon Town from 2003 until 2007, having achieved promotion in the 200506 via the play-off final. Having left Maldon in 2007, Colin went on to manage Tiptree United where he achieved promotion winning the

Eastern Counties Division One title in the 2007/08 season. Until the conclusion of the 2009/10 season both Maldon Town & Tiptree United played their home games at Park Drive, under a ground share arrangement. In the summer of 2010, Maldon Town & Tiptree United amalgamated to form, Maldon & Tiptree Football Club, under the ownership of Ed Garty. As a result of the amalgamation, Tiptree United withdrew from the Essex Senior League, resulting in the club’s last ever fixture being a 3-1 defeat against Enfield 1893 on 24 April 2010. Maldon & Tiptree took
the place of Maldon Town in the Isthmian Division One North. Following the retirement of Colin Wallington, Assistant Manager, Brad King and Glen Knight were appointed as the clubs JointManager. As the pair’s first managerial role, the new club witnessed wholesale changes with only a handful of players remaining who finished the season with Maldon Town and Tiptree United, respectively. The 2010-11 campaign saw the new club remain in or around the play-off positions for the majority of the season, finishing in eighth
place to finish the season with sixty-three points. Despite the high turnover of players, the good standard of football was maintained and it was in the end, a disappointing end to the season, for the club to fall away in the later stages of the season when suspensions and injuries eventually took their toll to leave the club frustratingly short of the play-off positions at the end of April. The 2011-12 season, proved to not be so successful and in November 2011, King and Knight were relieved of their duties with immediate effect. Ex-Charlton professional Mike Flanagan was appointed as Caretaker Manager and remained in place until the end of the season, steering the club to a respectful mid-table finish, managing thirty-three games and finishing with a win percentage of 49.12%. At the start of the 2012-13 campaign, Ex-Stansted & Redbridge boss Terry Spillane was appointed as Manager, and Mike Flanagan departed the club. The change of management, once again brought wholesale changes with the playing squad. Ex Tiptree United manager, Jody was brought to the club as Terry’s Assistant Manager. After a fantastic and unbeaten start to the season, the club found themselves at the top of the table but an incredible run by eventual Champions Grays Athletic meant Maldon had to settle for a place in the play-offs – Terry’s side remained unbeaten until Boxing Day, when they lost away from home against local rivals Heybridge Swifts. Disappointment came in the play-off final however when they lost a two goal lead to draw with Thamesmead Town, who thenwent on to win the final,on penalties.
After a disappointing end to the previous season, Terry Spillane oversaw more wholesale changes in the playing squad, including the departure of Assistant Manager, Jody Brown. Despite the changes, Maldon finished in ninth position with seventy-six points, winning twenty-one games. More changes to the playing staff, resulted in poor start to the 2014-15 season, and the club parted ways with Spillane in September 2014, with Chairman, Ed Garty takeover as Caretaker Manager, for three games. At the end of September 2014, Alan Kimble was appointed as manager and remained in charge for the remainder of the season, however the side struggled and more changes in the playing staff occurred. Maldon finished the season in nineteenth place with only forty-nine points. During the 2014-15 season, Media Officer at the time, Richard Buckby ran a competition for supporters to vote for a club nickname, with the options The River Boys, The Marshmen, The Mudmen and The Jammers available. The vote took place in January 2015 and was featured on National Radio station, TalkSport, with the The Jammers winning the vote with over 50% and being confirmed as the clubs new nickname. Following the completion of the 2014-15 season, the club linked with Colchester United and the two clubs formed close ties, which resulted in ex Ipswich Town midfielder, David Wright being appointed as First Team Manager. Wright remained in charge until December 2015 as he was appointed Assistant Manager of Colchester United. Liam Bailey took charge of the First Team on
a temporary basis, only managing one game, which finished four-all against Tilbury on Boxing Day in 2015. Moving into 2016, exLeiston Manager, Steve Ball was appointed First Team Manager and steered the club to a respectable finish in the league table climbing to seventh place, only missing out on the play-off places by nine points. In the closed season, a change of Management at Colchester United saw Steve Ball appointed as their Assistant Manager, leaving his position of Maldon & Tiptree Manager as a result. Ex-Manchester City midfielder, Kevin Horlock was then appointed as First Team manager ahead of the 2016-17 campaign and for the majority of the season, the Jammers sat at the top of the table before slipping away to finish in second place. Horlock’s side managed to reach the play-off final, however lost to Thurrock one-nil. The following campaign was not quite as successful for Horlock, with Maldon finishing just outside the play-off places in seventh place, with sixty-nine points. After managing 112 games, Kevin Horlock departed in the closed season and was replaced by ex-Colchester defender, Wayne Brown. In Brown’s first season in charge, the 2018-19 season, the Jammers finished in second place and reached the play-off final, but lost on penalties against local rivals, Heybridge Swifts. The 2019-20 season was one to remember for the club, but for the right and wrong reasons. The club achieved great things in the Emirates FA Cup. Having reached the First Round proper of the competition, Maldon beat League Two side, Leyton Orient away from home, taking over 600

fans to the home of The O’s, with the goals coming from Danny Parish and a superb solo goal from Jorome Slew. In the second round proper, Maldon were drawn against Football League side, Newport County with the game being shown live on National Television– with the Jammers only beaten by the League Two side, with a goal in stoppage time, with the game finishing 1-0. A record attendance of 1876 was recorded. However, the 2019-20 season will also be remembered for the wrong reasons. After impressive performances on the field, the Jammers found themselves top of the Isthmian Division One North, thirteen points clear with four games in hand, when disaster struck. With a global pandemic declared, as a result of Coronavirus, the league competition was formally abandoned on 26 March 2020, with all results from the season being expunged, and no promotion or relegation taking place to, from, or within the division. The club were denied a chance of promotion and forced to remain in the Division One North for the 2020-21 season.
ED GARTY STEPPED DOWN AS CHAIRMAN IN OCTOBER 2020 Following the disappointing end to the 2019-20 season, Wayne Brown remained in charge of the club and wholesale changes in the playing squad occurred again, with a number of the previous season’s squad securing transfers to clubs higher up the football pyramid. The Jammers were dealt a big blow in October 2020 when owner and Chairman Ed Garty stood down from his position with immediate effect, ending a challenging ten years at the helm. After a period of uncertainty for

the football club, General Manager Ron Dangerfield was confirmed as the new Chairman, with Richard Cowling taking ownership of the football club. Just like the 2019-20 season, the 2020-21 campaign was terminated with promotion and relegation denied for all the sides competing in the Division One North. However, prior to the curtailment the Jammers had reached the Emirates FA Cup First Round for the second successive season, this time losing to Morecambe 1-0 in front of the television cameras. Brown’s side also achieved their longest ever run in the Buildbase FA Trophy, eventually losing to Gloucester City. The Jammers were only able to play in five league games, finishing in third place before the season was curtailed. Heading in to the 2021/22 season, Wayne Brown remains in charge of the first team and is now the club’s longest-serving manager, holding the record for the most games managed in charge of Maldon & Tiptree Football Club.

Malachi is an exciting and tricky forward who has previously been with Oxford United and Woking, whilst also spending time on loan at North Leigh, Hampton & Richmond Borough and Macclesfield Town. Napa made his professional debut for Oxford in 2017 in the EFL Trophy. In his youth career, Napa also spent at Reading.
