IN CHARGE:
WAYNE BROWN GOOD AFTERNOON AND WELCOME TO PARK DRIVE. I WOULD LIKE TO EXTEND A WARM WELCOME BACK TO JIM AND HIS TEAM, ALONG WITH THE GRAYS SUPPORTERS AND TODAY’S MATCH OFFICIALS.
Another week of the season has been and gone and it has been a tough week for the boys. Last Saturday, Felixstowe were a physical team and it was a tough test for the lads. We didn’t struggle as such, but we certainly weren’t at our best in the first half. Goals win games and our two goals in quick succession in the second half really killed Felixstowe off. I was delighted for Adam Vyse, who collected five goals last week and long may it continue. On Tuesday, it was a great result for the boys and the club over a side in Braintree, who are two divisions above us. We created a number of chances and to be honest, I was disappointed we didn’t score more goals than we did – I was delighted for Andre though, to score his first goal for the club in such a big game. The boys can enjoy the moment and I am sure they enjoyed Thursday’s draw, but now it is time to focus on Grays in what is another important competition to the football club. Having only played Jim’s side a few weeks ago, we know that they will be well organised and will present a difficult challenge. I am sure they will have a few lads back who missed our last battle through injury, and since we beat them on penalties, they have had a great week or two, including an impressive win over Tilbury to demonstrate their impressive winning mentality. We have now recorded five clean sheets in eight games this season, but we know today will be a tough challenge. If we start the game well and stick to winning our individual battles, we will give ourselves a great chance of securing a place in the next round of the competition. Thank you for your continued support so far this season – keep it up! Enjoy the game, Wayne

A hat-trick from in-form striker, Adam Vyse saw the Jammers finish victorious over Felixstowe & Walton. After Tuesday night’s impressive win over Canvey Island, boss Wayne Brown made a couple of changes to his starting eleven, with Rhamar Garrett-Douglas restored to the starting line-up, along with Alfie Mason and Sam Cornish who made his first appearance of

the season after re-joining the club on loan from Colchester. Scott Kemp missed the match, following the previous week’s red card against Grays Athletic in the Emirates FA Cup. On a wonderful surface, it was the Jammers who started the brighter of the two sides, with slick passing from front to back. Maldon were rewarded after just 13 minutes. Smart play from full-back
Makosini Ryan-Khanye allowed him to escape the defenders and his pass was flicked on by Alfie Mason, into the path of in-form striker Adam Vyse. Vyse unleashed a fierce effort into the back of the net, beyond Callum Robinson in the Felixstowe goal. Following their early goal, Wayne Brown’s men continued to look dangerous with every attack, forcing Robinson to make a couple of saves, whilst also going close to a second from a couple of set-piece routines. Despite gaining more possession as the game progressed towards the break, the visitors found it extremely difficult to break down the home defence, with Ben McNamara in the home goal remaining untroubled. Much like the first half, the Jammers started on the front foot and 19 minutes in to the second half, extended their lead. A corner kick from the right was poorly dealt with by Robinson and Vyse was on hand at the far post to tap the ball home from close range, for his second goal of the afternoon. Three minutes later, Vyse had the chance for his hat-trick. Neat footwork from Hamza Kaid in the penalty area resulted in Brown’s side being awarded a penalty kick and Vyse made no mistake from 12 yards. His powerful spot-kick was too hot to handle for Robinson and it struck the back of the net to give the Jammers’ forward his hat-trick and a fifth goal in just three games, in what has been some week for the Maldon striker. As both teams made changes midway through the game’s second half, the contest lost its fluidity. However, the Jammers continued to press for more goals with both Thomas Stagg and Hamza Kaid having chances to extend the home sides lead. In the end, the match remained 3-0 to see Maldon continue their unbeaten run to the season.

WHEN DID YOU PLAY FOR THE JAMMERS AND WHO WAS IN CHARGE? I played for both clubs before they merged; Maldon Town and Tiptree United, but I joined Maldon & Tiptree in 2012/13 under Terry Spillane. I made my Maldon Town debut against East Thurrock in the quarter-final of the league club under Colin Wallington – we went on to get promoted that season. I am stuck on 99 goals for all three clubs combined. BEST PLAYER YOU PLAYED WITH WHILST WITH MALDON? Tough question. In the days of Maldon Town, it would have been Dean Parrett, anybody who remembers Dean will know he was a superb player. For Maldon & Tiptree though, I enjoyed playing with Joe Gardner and Chris Bryan. WHAT IS YOUR BEST MEMORY, WHILST PLAYING FOR THE CLUB? My best M&T memory has to be beating Harlow Town, 9-1 on my 30th birthday. I scored a hat-trick and made three, possibly four other goals on that day. I just had one of those days where I felt on top of my game.

“I SCORED A HAT-TRICK AND MADE THREE, POSSIBLY FOUR OTHER GOALS ON THAT DAY. I JUST HAD ONE OF THOSE DAYS”
WHAT IS YOUR WORST MEMORY WHILST PLAYING FOR THE JAMMERS? Without a shadow of a doubt, losing the play-off final against Thamesmead Town – that feeling never leaves you. I still think about it now, the team we had that year deserved. In the final, we were different class in the first half and should have been out of sight, but credit to Thamesmead, who hung in there and managed to win on penalties. AWAY FROM PARK DRIVE, YOUR MOST ENJOYABLE MOMENT IN FOOTBALL? For me, it has to be playing in Australia for Armadale Soccer Club. Being part of a club with great support and feeling the backing of their supports every week, with a top coach, playing with top players, who were mostly ex-professionals brought out the best in me. Whilst at the club, I ended up winning the State League Golden Boot which nobody had ever done whilst playing for Armadale. WHAT TEAM ARE YOU PLAYING FOR NOW? OR IF YOU’VE STOPPED PLAYING, WHAT ARE YOU UP TO THESE DAYS? These days, I occasionally play for Priory Sports on a Sunday – I haven’t played semi-professional football since leaving Witham Town in 2014/15. I am in good shape and have thought about returning, though, perhaps in the Essex Senior League, but we shall see. I’m also studying for my UEFA B licence, so no doubt I’ll be back involved at this level at some point in the future.

The roots of the modern day Grays Athletic can be traced back as far as 1888, although 1890 has become the de facto established formation date. The reasons for this disparity are almost certainly lost in the mists of time. Grays Athletic therefore celebrated its centenary in 1990, played at The Recreation Ground, Bridge Road from 1906 to 2010, and became members of the Athenian League in 1912. Grays became very strong after the Second World War, winning the Essex Senior Cup in 1945 and winning the Corinthian League and Cup in 1946. They rejoined the Athenian League in 1958 where they remained until 1983. In 1981 the Club Patron Mr Ron Billings purchased the ground and the Club was reformed as a Limited Company in 1982 under the guidance of Jeff and Fred Saxton. In 1983 a fire destroyed the 400-seater stand that included the dressing and kit rooms. Ron Billings came to the rescue by building the Ball Court Complex that included dressing rooms, club room and bar.Grays went on to become Isthmian Division 2 Champions in 1985.
MALDON & TIPTREE vs GRAYS ATHLETIC
The 1987-88 season saw the Club promoted to the then Vauxhall Opel Premier League after amassing 100 points. They then won the Essex Senior Cup and the Essex Thameside Trophy. A great FA Cup run in 1988-89 ended in the First Round proper, losing 2-0 away at Bath City. Grays won the League Cup, defeating Enfield in 1991-92. In 1993-94 and 1994-95 the Club won the Essex Senior Cup by defeating Billericay Town on both occasions. Relegated to Division One in 1997, they returned to the Premier Division in 1999-00. The FA Cup campaign in 2000-01 ended with defeat in the First Round proper for the third time, losing 4-0 away at Reading. This signalled the start of major changes with Mike Woodward installed as Director of Football, Craig Edwards as Manager and the departure of Jeff and Fred Saxton after 25 years of loyal service. Season 2002-03 started poorly and saw Edwards depart, being replaced by Mark Stimson
as player manager who appointed Scott Barrett as his assistant. Ahead of the 2003-04 season, the Club made the bold decision to turn most of the players into full time professionals, with the majority of players in their early twenties. Despite being knocked out of the FA Cup in the second qualifying round, 2004-05 became the most successful in the Club’s history. Stimson and his players won a number of manager and player of the month awards, with three players being called into the England National XI squad: Stuart Thurgood, Mitchell Cole and Dennis Oli. The ultimate success
being crowned League Champions of the Nationwide Conference South and winning the FA Trophy; beating Hucknall Town on penalties at Villa Park. Additionally, the Recreation Ground had been upgraded sufficiently to allow for promotion into the Nationwide Conference for season 2005-06. Mark Stimson’s philosophy of entertaining the crowds proved to be very successful with a blend of youthful exuberance and the outstanding quality of the more experienced players. Having equalled the Conference record of Kettering Town and going unbeaten in the first 15 fixtures of the season, both manager and players alike won several monthly awards. A contentious 3-0 defeat at the hands of Mansfield Town in the FA Cup was put to one side as the team turned their attention to the FA Trophy and the league. The Club’s first season in the top flight of non-league ended in disappointment as they finished 3rd in the league, and went on to lose 5-4 on aggregate to Halifax Town in the play-off semi-finals. The team put the loss behind them as they won a second successive FA Trophy, this time winning 2-0 against Woking at Upton Park in front of more than 8,000 of their own fans in an attendance of nearly 15,000. Following Mark Stimson’s resignation, the Club appointed former European Cup winner Frank Gray to manage the side in the summer of 2006. Despite the pre-season expectations, Gray only lasted 18 matches before both Jamie Stuart and Mick Woodward had short spells in charge of the first team. Andy King was appointed manager, but his spell was short-lived and he left shortly afterwards, taking control of just seven matches. Justin Edinburgh was the club’s 4th manager of the season, and under his leadership the Club reached the FA Trophy semi-finals where they lost to
MARK STIMSON
eventual winners Stevenage Borough. Survival in the League went to the last day of the season and despite losing 1-0 to Morecambe, the club stayed up courtesy of other results going their way. An extremely indifferent 2007-08 campaign ultimately led to the Edinburgh’s departure, before once again Mick Woodward took the reins with Gary Phillips as his assistant. With only three defeats in the final 17 games, Grays only ended 11 points outside the playoffs. The management led the side into the following season, but Mick Woodward stepped down, and replaced himself with Wayne Burnett who stayed in the job for four months before leaving the Club. Gary Phillips was promoted from assistant manager for the remainder of the season and the club finished in 19th position. 2009-10 turned out to be the fifth and final in the Conference Premier as both John Moncur (Chairman) and Andy Swallow (Chief Executive) joined the Club. Julian Dicks was brought in to replace Gary Phillips in September 2009, and Kenny Brown was soon appointed his assistant after resigning from his position as manager of CD Javea in Spain. The team struggled throughout the season, winning just five league matches and losing in their opening rounds of both the FA Cup and FA Trophy. The Blues did however manage to end the season on a high, winning two of their final three fixtures – the first of those away at AFC Wimbledon. In doing so, they recorded their first away league win for 16 months. The final day of the season was a sad affair for the Club, as we said farewell to the Recreation Ground after 114 years. Both the team and the fans did their part, as the team came back to beat Forest Green Rovers 2-1 with Allseny Cissoko scoring the last goal at the ground. Following relegation, the Club resigned from the Conference, deciding they would be unable to field a competitive team in the Conference South due to budget constraints. Following talks with both the FA and the Ryman League, the Club were eventually placed in the Ryman League Division One North.

The end of that season saw the expiry of the lease at the Recreation Ground, and without a home, the Club agreed a two-year deal to play at Rookery Hill, home of near neighbours East Thurrock United. The 2010-11 season was our first at this level for ten years, and despite having a solid start to the league campaign, a lack of consistency was evident throughout the remainder of the season which meant the team came up short in several matches, finally finishing in tenth position. Following the disappointing campaign, Julian Dicks and Kenny Brown left the club by mutual consent and the one-time Football League player and ex-Thurrock manager Hakan Hayrettin, was appointed as manager with his assistant Hassan Oktay for the 2011-12 season. With Hakan appointed, the remit was to challenge for a playoff place. Despite a few below par performances, the Club secured their playoff place on the penultimate weekend, meeting Enfield Town in the semi-final. Trailing 2-0 with ten minutes left, the team managed to force extra time with two late penalties. Unfortunately, with the match still level after extra time it was decided on penalties, with Grays losing 3-1. The 2012-13 season was a very successful one for the Club. It started with a move to another temporary home, in Rush Green, Romford in partnership with West Ham United. The ground and its facilities were improved, with the Premier League side responsible for the maintenance of the pitch. With just 4 league defeats and a run of form in the second half of the season which brought with it 18 successive league wins, the Club won the league with three matches to spare, finishing with a club record of 102 points. Two days after the title was secured, the side had the chance to complete the double, however they fell just short in the Essex Senior Cup final, losing 2-1 to Conference South side, AFC Hornchurch. The summer of 2013 saw two big changes for the Club in a few short weeks. The stay at Rush Green was
12
MALDON & TIPTREE vs GRAYS ATHLETIC
JULIAN DICKS brought to an abrupt end, with nearneighbours Aveley stepping in with an offer of a groundshare at the last minute. Everyone at the club is grateful to the Aveley Board for this. A short time after it was announced that Hakan Hayrettin would be leaving to join Luton Town. Experienced central defender Ryan Kirby took on the role, assisted by his father Steve Kirby and club captain Lee Flynn. Season 2013-14 started with a great run of four straight victories in the Isthmian Premier Division including two against highly fancied teams and we led the League at the end of August. A solid start, but we all knew that to stay in that position would be a tough ask and so it proved, with only four wins in the next nine games. Joao Carlos and Jack West were scoring freely, but the team was leaking goals and by the end of September we were lying in mid-table. A return to the team of fans’ favourite Danny Bunce lifted the spirits of the supporters but the results still kept slipping away. A run of only five wins from October to the end of February saw Grays slip towards the relegation zone and a run of postponements due to heavy rain saw the mood within the camp at a low ebb. Even a run to the semi-finals of the League Cup couldn’t lift the gloom. Everything changed when prolific scorer Leroy Griffiths returned to the Club almost ten years since
leaving. His enthusiasm and character changed the Club’s fortunes and with several other new signings the team found their confidence and fought their way back up the table with wins at regular intervals with Carlos, Dagenham & Redbridge loanee Joel Nouble and new signing Chris Benjamin scoring plenty of goals. It took until the middle of April to catch up with the fixture backlog and the team had to play two or even three games a week, within which time they settled into a mid-table position - very commendable when you consider players have jobs outside football. The last game of the season saw the team lying in a safe position with a trip to high-flying Maidstone. Two coach loads of supporters and many more going by car meant that 150 fans travelled to Kent to cheer on the Blues. Although we lost a competitive game 2-1, everybody enjoyed the trip and gave the players a standing ovation at the final whistle, a great tribute to the thirty-odd players who had pulled on the shirt for our first season back in the Ryman Premier League in 10 years. By the time the players got together for their first training session for the 201415 season on 28 June, we already had another new manager in place. A few days earlier Ryan Kirby had announced his resignation with family and business
reasons leading to his decision. It showed once again the time required to manage a Club at our level. The Club acted quickly to interview candidates for his replacement and selected 35 year-old Jody Brown, who had stepped into the breach at Heybridge Swifts in December 2013 when their management duo left to take over at Chelmsford City. Jody moved quickly to assess the strength of the squad at his disposal and introduce a number of new players to assist the club in its plans to improve on and off the field. At the end of December 2014 Jody Brown departed to take over the manager’s role at Conference National side Welling FC. Player Mark Bentley was installed as assistant manager to Andy Swallow, before taking over the role of caretaker manager in January 2015. In February 2015 the Club announced that Mark had been appointed permanent manager for the remainder of the 2014-15 season. The season culminated in a superb run of results for the Club, including an unbeaten run of thirteen matches, which saw the team miss out on the playoffs as a result of a 94th minute goal elsewhere on the final day of the season. The 2015-16 season was a real seesaw affair. A great start saw us top of the League after 10 games and a good FA Cup run took the Blues to the final qualifying round, but we lost in a replay to National League side, Welling United. As we approached Christmas, there was unrest within the squad as a number of players were being encouraged by
agents to look further afield in their careers. By the end of the season, 20 registered players had left the club, as owner, Andy Swallow, decided it was time to reduce his financial support for the Club. A run of ten straight defeats saw us finish in 15th place in the League, with many youngsters filling the gaps in the squad left by the departed players. After Andy Swallow announced that he was stepping back from the day to day running of the Club to concentrate his efforts on the long term plan to relocate the Club back to Grays, a group of supporters set about creating a new Supporter Owned Club. A successful community share offer was launched at the end of June to demonstrate the club’s financial viability for the 2016-17 season. This gave the Club the confidence to apply to the Football Association and the Ryman League for permission to transfer its membership from the company that ran the Club to a new organisation - “Grays Athletic Community Football Club”. In November 2016 Grays Athletic Community Football Club received official confirmation from the FA and League that the transfer of ownership had been approved. The 2016-17 season was always going to be one of transition with the club moving from private to supporter ownership. On the field, former playing legend, Jamie Stuart returned as player/manager, but he had to start from scratch with a new squad of players. 60 players attended pre-season trials and a squad was eventually chosen to represent the
JAMIE SLABBER RETURNED FOR ANOTHER SPELL IN 2017
Club in the Ryman Premier Division. It proved to be a difficult season, with the team spending most of the season at the bottom of the table. Relegation was confirmed with a 1-0 away defeat at Wingate and Finchley on 1 April 2017. Off the field, the Club was pleased with the galvanising effect supporter ownership was having, despite the prospect of a return to Isthmian Division One North football after four seasons in the Premier Division. 2017-18 was very disappointing even though Jamie Stuart brought three experienced former Grays’ players – midfielder, Barry Cogan and forwards, Dennis Oli and Jamie Slabber, into the fold in pre-season and later recruited former defenders, Richard Halle and Joe Bruce. We spent most of the season hovering around the top ten without really threatening the leading pack. By the end of March, we were on course to finish in the top half of the table, but a run of five consecutive defeats in April, saw us finish 16th out of 24. 2018/19 proved to be another “in and out” season, although we did flirt with a play-off position on a few occasions. Towards the end of March 2019, with the club in ninth position in the league and ten games remaining, the board agreed to part company with Jamie Stuart and appointed the experienced former Metropolitan Police FC manager, Jim Cooper, supported by Paul Joynes as his assistant and Chris Bourne as coach. The last ten games saw some changes in playing personnel and we took sixteen points to finish seventh. Jim has begun to rebuild the squad with a good mix of experience and youth. He is very committed to working with our burgeoning youth section, which now boasts 25 teams. The Club’s principal objective remains to develop a new community football facility in the North Grays/Blackshots area of Thurrock and we are working closely with Thurrock Council, local schools, the County Football Association and developers to “Bring Grays Athletic back to Grays”. In the meantime, we continue to groundshare with Aveley FC at their superbly appointed Parkside Stadium.

BRAINTREE TOWN MALDON & TIPTREE
TUESDAY 13TH OCTOBER | EMIRATES FA CUP THIRD ROUND QUALIFYING Wayne Brown’s men pulled off the upset of the round, overcoming Braintree Town, who sit two divisions above the Jammers. After last season’s heroics in the FA Cup, Brown’s men had another cup upset in their sights, away from home against Braintree Town of the Conference South on a wet Tuesday night, in a game played behind closed doors. Following Saturday’s win over Felixstowe & Walton, Maldon made several changes with Scott Kemp returning from suspension and Bradley McClenaghan and Billy Cracknell also restored to the starting line-up. As expected being the home side and from a higher division, Braintree started on the front-foot, controlling possession whilst the Jammers found it difficult to find their feet in the opening stages. Despite their possession, the home side were unable to break down a, once again, solid Maldon defence. As the underdogs began to grow into the game, attacking moves started to follow with Scott Kemp and Alfie Mason both involved, but Kemp’s cross only just evaded Adam Vyse in the penalty area. Twenty minutes in and Ben McNamara was forced to make his first save of the contest and what save it was. A free-kick from Braintree’s Rondell Gordon looked destined for the top corner, but McNamara was on hand to pull off a remarkable diving save to his right-hand side. As the game began to flow from

ANDRE HASANALLY GRABBED THE DECISIVE GOAL
WAYNE BROWN’S MEN WILL NOW WELCOME HARINGEY BOROUGH IN THE NEXT ROUND end to end, Maldon had their first shot on target with 30 minutes on the clock, as McClenaghan tested the impressive Adam Pizzybek in Braintree’s goal - the shot was saved. As the Jammers began to dominate against their superior opponents, the chances began to follow with Billy Cracknell, Hamza Kaid, Scott Kemp and Adam Vyse all having chances to open the scoring, the best of which fell to Vyse but his effort from around eight yards out sailed over the crossbar. On the stroke of half-time, Kemp had another chance but, like Vyse, his effort went over. Somehow, Maldon remained only level at the break. Wayne Brown’s side started the second half, much like how they finished the first - on the front foot and looking to create plenty of goalscoring opportunities. Sure enough, the first chance of the second half did fall to the Jammers. Following great work from winger, Andre Hasanally, Kemp was gifted with a great opportunity but he dragged his effort wide of the goal. Makeshift full-back Alfie Mason then had a chance of his own to test the hands of Pizzybek, however, like many of his team mates in the first half, he blasted his effort over the crossbar. Despite their spells of possession, Braintree struggled to create any real chances of note, but Niran Butler did need to be alert midway through the second half as a dangerous cross from the right looked destined for the foot of Louis Yamfam, but Butler was on hand to clear the danger in what was an impressive defensive clearance. Looking to grab the first goal of the
evening, Maldon made their first change with Thomas Stagg replace Vyse, upfront. With 15 minutes left to go, the Jammers finally were finally rewarded for their impressive display and the Braintree defence was breached. A driving run from Scott Kemp down the left was followed by a brilliant pass into the feet of Kaid, who saw his effort blocked by Pizzybek, however the rebound fell kindly to Andre Hasanally who blasted the ball home to net his first Maldon & Tiptree goal - what a time to score it. With the home defence appearing to be at sixes and sevens, Maldon created a host of chances to extend their lead in quick succession. Mason stung Pizzybek’s hands from distance, before the home stopper was on hand again to make a breathtaking double save, denying Kaid and McClenaghan to keep his side in the game. As Braintree looked destined to be heading out of the FA Cup, they created their best chances of the evening in the last moments. A swift counter-attack after a sloppy Maldon pass gifted Yamfam with another chance, however he was not able to get the better of McNamara in the Maldon goal. In virtually the final action of the match, the hosts were awarded a free-kick on the edge of the Maldon box. Liam Smyth stepped up to take the set-piece, only to see his smart effort cannon off the crossbar to the delight of the visiting defence. And that was that. The Jammers had pulled off another cup upset, led by the ever-impressive Wayne Brown, this time conquering a side two divisions above them to book their place in the FA Cup Fourth Round Qualifying for a second successive season.

CLUB HISTORY In 2009, Ed Garty took over the ownership of Maldon Town from Michael Kirkham, whilst still in charge of running Tiptree United and installed Alan Brockhouse as Maldon Town’s new chairman. Following the takeover, Colin Wallington returned for a second spell in charge of Maldon Town, leaving his post as Tiptree United manager immediately. Colin previously managed Maldon Town from 2003 until 2007, having achieved promotion in the 2005-06 via the play-off final. Having left Maldon in 2007, Colin went on to manage Tiptree United where he achieved promotion winning the Eastern Counties Division One title in the 2007/08 season. Until the conclusion of the 2009/10 season both Maldon Town & Tiptree United played their home games at Park Drive, under a ground share arrangement.

MALDON & TIPTREE vs GRAYS ATHLETIC
In the summer of 2010, Maldon Town & Tiptree United amalgamated to form, Maldon & Tiptree Football Club, under the ownership of Ed Garty. As a result of the amalgamation, Tiptree United withdrew from the Essex Senior League, resulting in the clubs last ever fixture being a 3-1 defeat against Enfield 1893 on 24 April 2010. Maldon & Tiptree took the place of Maldon Town in the Isthmian Division One North. Following the retirement of Colin Wallington, Assistant Manager, Brad King and Glen Knight were appointed as the clubs Joint-Manager. As the pair’s first managerial role, the new club witnessed wholesale changes with only a handful of players remaining who finished the season with Maldon Town and Tiptree United, respectively. The 2010-11 campaign saw the
new club remain in or around the play-off positions for the majority of the season, finishing in eighth place to finish the season with sixty-three points. Despite the high turnover of players, the good standard of football was maintained and it was in the end, a disappointing end to the season, for the club to fall away in the later stages of the season when suspensions and injuries eventually took their toll to leave the club frustratingly short of the play-off positions at the end of April. The 2011-12 season, proved to not be so successful and in November 2011, King and Knight were relieved of their duties with immediate effect. Ex-Charlton professional Mike Flanagan was appointed as Caretaker Manager and remained in place until the end of the season, steering the club to a respectful mid-table finish, managing thirtythree games and finishing with a win percentage of 49.12%.
At the start of the 2012-13 campaign, Ex-Stansted & Redbridge boss Terry Spillane was appointed as Manager, and Mike Flanagan departed the club. The change of management, once again brought wholesale changes with the playing squad. Ex Tiptree United manager, Jody was brought to the club as Terry’s Assistant Manager. After a fantastic and unbeaten start to the season, the club found themselves at the top of the table but an incredible run by eventual Champions Grays Athletic meant Maldon had to settle for a place in the play-offs – Terry’s side remained unbeaten until Boxing Day, when they lost away from home against local rivals Heybridge Swifts. Disappointment came in the play-off final however when they lost a two goal lead to draw with Thamesmead Town, who thenwent on to win the final,on penalties. After a disappointing end to the previous season, Terry Spillane oversaw more wholesale changes in the playing squad, including the departure of Assistant Manager, Jody Brown. Despite the changes, Maldon finished in ninth position with seventysix points, winning twenty-one games.
Mudmen and The Jammers available. The vote took place in January 2015 and was featured on National Radio station, TalkSport, with the The Jammers winning the vote with over 50% and being confirmed as the clubs new nickname. Following the completion of the 2014-15 season, the club linked with Colchester United and the two clubs formed close ties, which resulted in ex Ipswich Town midfielder, David Wright being appointed as First Team Manager. Wright remained in charge until December 2015 as he was appointed Assistant Manager of Colchester United. Liam Bailey took charge of the First Team on a temporary basis, only managing one game, which finished four-all against Tilbury on Boxing Day in 2015. Moving into 2016, ex-Leiston Manager, Steve Ball was appointed First Team Manager and steered the club to a respectable finish in the league table climbing to seventh place, only missing out on the playoff places by nine points.
More changes to the playing staff, resulted in poor start to the 201415 season, and the club parted ways with Spillane in September 2014, with Chairman, Ed Garty takeover as Caretaker Manager, for three games. At the end of September 2014, Alan Kimble was appointed as manager and remained in charge for the remainder of the season, however the side struggled and more changes in the playing staff occurred. Maldon finished the season in nineteenth place with only forty-nine points.
In the closed season, a change of Management at Colchester United saw Steve Ball appointed as their Assistant Manager, leaving his position of Maldon & Tiptree Manager as a result. Ex-Manchester City midfielder, Kevin Horlock was then appointed as First Team manager ahead of the 2016-17 campaign and for the majority of the season, the Jammers sat at the top of the table before slipping away to finish in second place. Horlock’s side managed to reach the play-off final, however lost to Thurrock one-nil. The following campaign was not quite as successful for Horlock, with Maldon finishing just outside the play-off places in seventh place, with sixty-nine points.
During the 2014-15 season, Media Officer at the time, Richard Buckby ran a competition for supporters to vote for a club nickname, with the options The River Boys, The Marshmen, The
After managing 112 games, Kevin Horlock departed in the closed season and was replaced by ex-Colchester defender, Wayne Brown. In Brown’s first season in
charge, the 2018-19 season, the Jammers finished in second place and reached the play-off final, but lost on penalties against local rivals, Heybridge Swifts. The 2019-20 season was one to remember for the club, but for the right and wrong reasons. The club achieved great things in the Emirates FA Cup. Having reached the First Round proper of the competition, Maldon beat League Two side, Leyton Orient away from home, taking over 600 fans to the home of The O’s, with the goals coming from Danny Parish and a superb solo goal from Jorome Slew. In the second round proper, Maldon were drawn against Football League side, Newport County with the game being shown live on National Television– with the Jammers only beaten by the League Two side, with a goal in stoppage time, with the game finishing 1-0. A record attendance of 1876 was recorded. However, the 2019-20 season will also be remembered for the wrong reasons. After impressive performances on the field, the Jammers found themselves top of the Isthmian Division One North, thirteen points clear with four games in hand, when disaster struck. With a global pandemic declared, as a result of Coronavirus, the league competition was formally abandoned on 26 March 2020, with all results from the season being expunged, and no promotion or relegation taking place to, from, or within the division. The club were denied a chance of promotion and forced to remain in the Division One North for the 2020-21 season. Following the disappointing end to the 2020-21 season, Wayne Brown remained in charge of the club and wholesale changes in the playing squad occurred again, with a number of last season’s squad securing transfers to clubs higher up the football pyramid.
