ESSEX YOUNG FARMERS SUMMER 2021
Hello everyone! Although circumstances have made it difficult for us to run as normal, it has been great to see many events taking place including the drive in cinema evening, tractor run, prelims and more. After two years as editor I am now handing over to the lovely Erin Thomas who I’m sure will do a great job. I hope everyone enjoys their summer (on or off a combine!) and I look forward to seeing many of you in the next Young Farmers year.

COUNTY REPORTS
COUNTY CHAIRMAN ELLIE GEMMILL
Well, what a year it’s been and how are we already into harvest 2021?! Since spring time Essex Young Farmers have been particularly busy with our fundraising and events. Back in March we completed the ‘Great Grain Campaign’, which helped us to raise a massive £32,000! Thank you to all those who generously donated tonnes of wheat and virtual tonnes too! Also, a big thank you to the Schwiers, Hitchcocks and Stratherns who played a big part by allowing us to store the grain while ADM Agriculture Ltd found us a buyer. Hurrah, the grain has gone! Now for the main event of the year to highlight what would have been our Annual Show, which was our Cinema Evening and Tractor Run. We teamed up with local agricultural dealer R W Crawford Agricultural Machinery Ltd and tractor manufacturer Massey Ferguson to put on a Covid-secure event to be enjoyed by not only tractor enthusiasts, but families as well – the weekend was an outstanding success. If you weren’t fortunate enough to join us down in Barleylands, you missed a corker of a sing-along (in the rain) to ‘Grease!’ This classic certainly lifted our spirits and got everyone turning up the tunes, at least with the windows up we couldn’t hear each other sing! The following day we held a Tractor Run at Boyton Hall, our beloved show ground. With the company of 50 modern tractors and 18 vintage, we raised funds to help go towards our 2022 Show. The scenic route was beautifully planned thanks to Andrew Hutley, starting at Boyton Hall and taking you through Chignal St. James, down to Dunmow and then back through the Rodings and along the A1060, finishing back at Boyton Hall. Sorry to those who got stuck along the way! The sun was shining as the modern tractors set off on their journey, however, when it was time for the vintage crew to make a start the heavens opened! The few that had no cabs to cover them were suited and booted ranging from all-in-one rain macs to umbrellas. Nonetheless, they still had smiles on their faces!
North Benfleet
The rain had passed. After completing the route and waiting for the last few stragglers to arrive back at Boyton we were all accounted for… all but one. Geoffrey Gibblin finally made an appearance in his beautifully-polished and restored vintage Massey Ferguson, everyone gathered round and applauded as he drove through the gates!
04
Thank you to everyone associated with EYF who helped on the day, and thank you to the Philpot family for their endless help and support, kindly allowing us to use their location as a start and finish point and Barleylands, too! Hopefully we will be returning for a proper show May 22nd, 2022! EYFC tractor run at Boyton Hall At the beginning of June we managed to slip in a Prelims Day held at County, speedily organised by Paige Mitchell. It was so lovely to see everyone back together, members new and Well done to all the lucky bidders from our online old from all over the county. The tug of war rope was auction. We raised just over £5k with amazing open to all and on the side we had space hoppers prizes ranging from off-road driving experiences, and wellie boots flying around. Behind the scenes, food hampers and holiday stays! Was definitely an we had Josh Cook, Willy Philp and Tom Fairley easy bargain if you got involved, and we couldn’t fuelling the BBQ and the chargrilled sausages and have done it without Bill King and his team from burgers were very well received! To finish off the Cheffins Auctioneers. If you’re unfamiliar, they day we had a little competitive rounders match, always have a good sale on, or in the making! but finished shortly after starting as we lost the rounders balls in the ‘rough’. At the beginning of July, we headed down to North Benfleet where the Lyon family invited us down Colchester had a very successful ‘Road Run’ on to their Farmers Market at The Green Barn Farm June 13th, and I was lucky enough to see them Shop, just off the A130. We had a Case Magnum set off and in action. The participants ranged full of balloons to attract people to our Young from motorcyclists, vintage cars, army trucks Farmers table. However, more attention was and tractors. The weather was fantastic for it and being paid when I was given the task of popping the event was very well supported by Colchester the balloons - safe to say it’s not a job you want members, subscribers and the public, too. Although without ear defenders! I highly recommend taking I’m not too sure the residents of a trip down there to see what goodies they have Colchester enjoyed it as much! in store, as speaking from experience I did not go home empty-handed. I had the pleasure of joining Ashdon and Saffron Waldon County held their Exec AGM the other evening which on a farm tour for one of their saw the end of another Young Farmers year. club nights. The tour was kindly hosted by G A Stevenson & Son. I can’t say it’s been easy with the government issuing While sharing their knowledge of us with numerous lockdowns and restriction rules, potatoes and contracting with us, but we have made the most of what we can out of we were driven around in a tractor a sticky situation, and the fact that Essex Young and trailer allowing us to admire Farmers and all those associated have raised nearly the views that surrounded us and £40,000 to see us through to the foreseeable future the precision of farming. To top is an incredible achievement! I would like to take a brilliant evening off, there was this opportunity to thank everyone who has helped BBQ food and drinks waiting for Essex Young Farmers this year as we wouldn’t us at the finish. have got through to the other side without you, also the support I’ve received as Chairman has been Farming Community Network phenomenal. hosted an afternoon tea party at Whitbread’s on a sunny Saturday I’m afraid this will not be the last you hear afternoon - we were lucky with from me, as I will be embarking on a second the weather as it was forecast year of chairmanship (hopefully with no COVID to thunderstorm. s we all fall into a summer break after what has been another challenging year for the YFC movement, there has once again been a distinct lack of social events and gatherings. There is finally light at the end of the tunnel, and the relaxation of Covid restrictions is looking much more positive for when we re-group in September. Now we have a degree of herd immunity and a large percentage are fully vaccinated, I am sure we will adapt to living with this virus in the short-term. Young Farmers are a resilient and adaptable bunch and will manage to invent ways of enjoying themselves in a safe environment. We even managed to have a socially-distanced Prelims Day where it was great to see 114 members turn up for a relaxed tug of war refresher and rounders. Some clubs have managed to run a few charitable events, in particular Colchester’s Tractor Run and Ashdon & Saffron Walden with their Fun Ride. Both were very well-attended and enjoyable events. We will kick off the new year in September with the County Harvest Festival and the hosting of the Eastern Area Competitions weekend with a party... yes, a real PARTY!
THE SUPPORT FROM SUBSCRIBERS, OUR LOYAL TRADE STANDS FROM OUR SHOW AND MEMBERS AND THEIR FAMILIES, HAVE ENSURED THAT THE FINANCIAL SECURITY OF THE FEDERATION IS SAFE
After the difficulties of the past 18 months, the Federation has weathered the storm well financially with the aid of some key fundraising events. The support from subscribers, our loyal trade stands from our Show and members and their families, have ensured that the financial security of the Federation is safe. Our very own branded beer, Auction of Promises, Tractor Run, Cinema Night and the hugely-successful Grain Challenge have certainly plugged the gap of two cancelled YFC Shows. Separate reports will no doubt cover these in more detail, but I am personally humbled by the depths of support received from all associated with YFC. Congratulations to Ellie Gemmill who will be carrying the mantle of County Chair for another year, and to all those who are taking on new roles within the County. It will be a bit of a “restart” button as we have fresh members coming into roles with fresh ideas which I am sure will drive the Federation to new strengths. As Club AGMs start to roll out in the autumn, Jenny has been preparing welcome packs for new Club committee roles and we are mindful that there will be younger members taking positions. Please encourage new members to get involved at Club level and if they need help, please contact the County Office for assistance. There is a wealth of experience to ensure your Club thrives once again from older members, F&GP and support from our County Organiser. As many of us start to catch up on missed social events, weddings, 21st parties and balls etc, I have been fortunate enough to become a ”Covid Grandad” and welcome a new member into our family, as many others will have done. I am certainly looking forward to encouraging a new generation into a great organisation! Wishing all involved in farming matters a prosperous, safe harvest. See you all in September.

Hi everyone. After a rather quiet few months, it’s great to report that we have finally been able to run our first in-person sports competition of the year! Both our rounders and a “have-a-go” approach to tug of war competitions saw a great turnout from members, which was brilliant to see. We’re now getting ready to host Eastern Area, where we can’t wait to get behind our Essex teams representing over the weekend.

Hi everyone! A strange Young Farmers year is now coming to a head! Although it wasn’t what we all hoped it would be, Ash & Saff have still had a pretty successful year. Since lockdown has eased, we have had lots of pub socials in our local which is always a good turn out, especially when there is beer involved! A couple of tug of war try-out evenings and even some tours which loads of members got involved with! Thanks to Brace Engineering and G A Stevenson for hosting us for the evenings and both providing amazing BBQs!
LUCY HITCHCOCK
I couldn’t write this report without mentioning the Grain Campaign. Thanks so much to all of the farmers in the Saffron Walden region for donating a hard-earned tonne of wheat to help support EYFC. With the Covid hit meaning our recent Shows couldn’t go ahead to generate money, this has been a massive help to keep us running for the year so, once again, thank you! To round the YF year off, Ash &Saff hosted a Summer Fun Ride to raise money for the club. This was the first time we have ever done this sort of fundraiser. Thanks to our brilliant club members, the day was HUGELY successful with over 90 people and horses entering to ride! The weather was beautiful and all of the riders had a ball, many saying it was the best ride they had ever been on, with perfect ground and lots of galloping! We raised £2,000 from entries, cake sales and the BBQ! Thanks again to everyone who helped on the day, we couldn’t have done it without you! I hope everyone stays safe over summer and gets their harvest in well! See you all in September for what will hopefully be a more normal year!

Hi everyone, I hope you’re all well and enjoying our newfound freedom… fingers crossed it lasts! Since our last report in March, Colchester YFC has continued to pull together and we can’t wait to take full advantage of the easing of COVID restrictions.
ERIN THOMAS
As we (the members) have been unable to see each other for so long, one of our first face-to-face meetings back had to involve tug of war! Our training began in May and has continued every week, since seeing many new members join in and become part of the teams… yes, teams with an ‘S’, we now have a girls ToW team for the first time in years! Both our boys and girls teams took part in the annual Prelims fun day, which was a great opportunity for the newer members to feel what it’s really like taking part in such a competitive sport. Both teams smashed it! Of course, the pub has been visited many times over the past few months, whether it be outdoors or indoors, but we have also taken art in other weekly activities! Some of our members attended clay shooting which was organised by one of our own. Thank you to Hector for a great evening! We have also spent a couple of evenings down by the river in Bures for a spot of evening swimming and we’ve been to Mersea Island beach to enjoy the sun, too. On 16th May, Colchester took part in Essex’s Tractor Run. This was an amazing experience, to see so many vehicles and so many people who all share the same enthusiasm and passion for the countryside was extraordinary… even if we did annoy a few motorists on the road! It was worth it! Following on from Essex’s Tractor Run, we also hosted a similar event, except we also welcomed vintage vehicles, army vehicles, motorcycles and any unique mode of transport you can think of. The event had an incredible turn out, and we must thank G & J Barron Farms and Robert Davidson for hosting us, Attmere Plant for sponsoring the event and to the day’s escorts, Dan and Graham. The funds raised for this event will go to our charities for the year: ABF The Soldiers Charity and Prostate Cancer UK. Throughout the next few months, our ToW teams will continue to train and our members will continue to meet as long as government guidelines don’t change… again! Thanks for reading and stay safe,
Erin xx

Hi everyone, I hope you’ve all had a lovely time since restrictions started to be lifted. Maldon Young Farmers have been back in the swing of things with their weekly meetings and here are a few things that we have been up to… On 1st June, we visited one of our members’ family farm to meet some sheep. Archie gave a talk about what’s involved with keeping sheep throughout the different parts of the year and about lambing. We also got to have cuddles with the three bottle-fed lambs, Maisy, Dolly and Stan! Thank you Archie for delivering the talk. Also in June, we had another new members evening, which saw a great turn out with lots of new faces. Everyone had great fun getting involved in some team games.

On 22nd June we held our traditional yearly car treasure hunt. This is when the competitive side of everyone comes out! Covering some distance (as well as being safe), all the teams did really well. Well done to the winning team. On 13th July, we enjoyed a lovely dog walk at Heybridge Basin. The dogs loved meeting all their new friends! Along with the Maldon meetings, we have been involved in the County-organised events. We had a few members that were involved with the Tractor Run and a group took part in the tug of war and the rounders at the Prelims Day at the start of June. Thank you to County for organising. We are all looking forward to having all the events and competitions back. Of course, we have also been back to the pub at the weekends and enjoying a drink or two! Hope harvest goes well for all. Stay safe, enjoy summer and see you all back in September!

The last 18 months have been strange for everyone and the lack of Young Farmers meetings and activities plays a part in this. However, as life gets back to some form of normality, so does Young Farmers. We started April by participating in Essex Young Farmers’ Great Grain Campaign where a fantastic 54.2 tonnes was collected! Every tonne donated is greatly appreciated and we are incredibly thankful to all that did as we continue to raise funds to securing the future of Essex Young Farmers, as well as funding the popular Show.

EVERY TONNE DONATED IS GREATLY APPRECIATED AND WE ARE INCREDIBLY THANKFUL TO ALL THAT DID AS WE CONTINUE TO RAISE FUNDS TO SECURING THE FUTURE OF ESSEX YOUNG FARMERS, AS WELL AS FUNDING THE POPULAR SHOW
There are many aspects to being a member of a Young Farmers club, one example being the various club nights that are on offer. At the beginning of June, Ongar YF were kindly given a tour around Humphreys C & Sons Abattoir and Butchery. Here we learned all about the different processes of an abattoir and butchering business and it was a very interesting and informative evening for all. With summer finally upon on us and the lighter evening arriving, Ongar YF headed to Chelmsford’s Hylands Park for an evening dog walk! After not being able to see each other for such a long period of time, a chilled club night was most welcomed by members including those with four paws and a wagging tail! It made a change to the normal club night that is usually run. At the end of June, with thanks to a few of our members, we were lucky enough to have had an evening of paddle boarding and raft building! Despite a slightly chilly evening, this didn’t stop our members from getting involved and the competitive streak coming out. As another Ongar Young Farmers year comes to an end, we hope all our fellow members and subscribers continue to stay safe and look forward to Young Farmers events in the near future.

Well, what can I say?! It’s been a random couple of months of weather but, as I sit here on the Dengie, it finally seems to have worked out that it’s summer! The same can also be said for Southminster. We have been making the most of all the nice weather and the fact that a few of us have kayaks and paddle boards - the perfect way to cool down after a day’s work! As well as this we managed to see one night clear back at the end of May to have a BBQ and camp out in our cars. A fantastic evening was had by all, even with all the required measures in place! Thanks again to the Symons family for the use of the vineyard for the evening.
JACK GARWOOD TO GET OUT AND SEE MEMBERS FROM ACROSS ESSEX WAS SOMETHING WE’LL NEVER TAKE FOR GRANTED AGAIN. THANKS ONCE AGAIN TO EVERYONE THAT WAS INVOLVED IN MAKING THE DAY A SUCCESS
The following weekend was the Prelims weekend, and while not being the typical weekend of welly-wangling and mowerracing, it was a brilliant day nonetheless. To get out and see members from across Essex was something we’ll never take for granted again. Thanks once again to everyone that was involved in making the day a success, and also those on the BBQ for keeping us all fed!
A beautiful evening on and in the Chelmer
Anyone know how to hit a rounders ball?
Picking our way down to the water!
Around this time we also had a pizza making evening, getting the most out of light evenings we took ourselves to Meg’s farm (thank you to the Cowell family for having us) with a pizza oven and a pickup. Though there were some odd topping choices, everyone seem to enjoy their pizzas. Note to anyone thinking about it keep an eye on marshmallows, they have a tendency to set alight! If you’re reading this and ever fancy coming along to a Southminster meeting then you can find us on Facebook and Instagram or contact Lizzy on 07956 827618 or southminsteryfc@gmail.com Hope you’re all keeping well and we can’t wait to see you all again soon! Until then,
Jack
Pizza anyone?

Hello everyone and welcome to the summer edition of the Young Farmers magazine. I hope you have all been keeping safe and well and enjoying the sunshine when it chooses to make an appearance! Since the last time I wrote to you, a lot has happened in the world of Wix. Club nights are pretty much back to normal - observing any changes to government guidelines, of course. Wedding season is now upon us, meaning our handy bar skills come back into play to help boost our fundraising efforts. With the (delayed) harvest just around the corner, our Young Farmers year draws to a close.
HANNAH MARSHALL
IT WOULDN’T BE A VINEYARD TOUR IF YOU DIDN’T GET TO SAMPLE THE PRODUCE AFTERWARDS - ALL TASTERS OF WHICH WENT DOWN VERY SMOOTHLY!
Looking back over the past few months, as a club we have been fortunate enough to continue a programme of activities similar to that of preCOVID. When restrictions first lifted and we were able to see each other in person, rather than via Zoom, one of our first meetings was a well-earned Easter egg hunt at Norman’s Farm. We’re still unsure whether all the Creme Eggs were found, but we have yet to receive any reports of machinery breaking down due to melted chocolate! More recently, members and subscribers enjoyed an evening at Prettyfields Vineyard in Ardleigh where they were taken on a tour of the vineyard and learned about the art of viticulture. Of course, it wouldn’t be a vineyard tour if you didn’t get to sample the produce afterwards - all tasters of which went down very smoothly! After a buffet dinner to soak up the alcohol, I’m pretty sure it’s safe to say that everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves (some may have regretted it in the morning!). As well as these adventures, we have filled our Thursday evenings with activities such as a giant slip and slide at Hasty’s Adventure Farm, rounders on the beach, and the standard pub nights. I’m sure there’ll be lots more to come, but for now, I wish all of you an easy and fruitful harvest. All the best.

SHOW WEEKEND 2021 The Show must go on... or maybe not. Unfortunately, as you are all aware we had to cancel our Show for a second successive year, but felt we still needed to do something – so with the support of Crawfords, Barleylands and the Philpot family, we made it a weekend to remember. Essex did Grease with a Drive-through Cinema on Saturday 15th May at Barleylands. Despite the weather, everyone that came had a great time and felt safe and secure sitting in their own cars dancing away, watching the film. And on Sunday, what would have been Show day, we held a tractor run – again, keeping it safe and secure for everyone. 70 tractors of all size, colour and age turned up at the show ground and, despite a few issues and a little bit of rain, with the support of the local rural police the day was incredible and it was so good to be doing something! Thank you to everyone that helped and supported us at both events.

FUNDRAISING
FUNDRAISING IN AID OF ESSEX YOUNG FARMERS In our last magazine, we explained how two years without an Annual Show was placing the charity’s reserve funds under a considerable strain, and we announced the target that our members had set of raising a colossal £45,000 to help steward the Federation through until when we are able to welcome people through the gates of the County Showground once more. We are pleased to announce that, since the last magazine, the Federation is nearing our target. The packed fundraising programme put together by our members has seen events including the Tractor Road Run, a Drive-in Cinema, an Auction of Promises and the Great Grain Campaign. The phenomenal support received from both our subscriber-base and sponsors at each and every one of these events means that the Federation can remain financially secure until our next Annual Show, 22nd May 2022.
£45,000 £42,000 £39,000 £36,000 £33,000 £30,000
As you can see from the fund-ometer, £31,626 of the funds raised came from the very successful Great Grain Campaign. Members travelled in tractors and trailers, kindly donated by their local dealerships, from farm to farm across the county receiving grain donations of up to 18 tonnes! In total, 128 tonnes of grain were generously donated by Essex Farmers, and have now been sold by ADM commissionfree. We are hugely grateful for the “virtual” grain donations received, too.
£27,000
The auction was also a great success, with the support of Cheffins and 15 generously-donated lots from garden vouchers to boating holidays, lawnmowers and jewellery sets - something for everyone - we raised £5,305 towards our target.
£9,000
The incredible levels of support so gratefully received from the community surrounding Essex Young Farmers, including subscribers, sponsors and other benefactors, means that the Federation can continue to provide opportunities for young people in Essex. These opportunities are not just those of competitions, training and development, but also the leadership and personal growth opportunities offered to young people as members of the Federation, potentially enabling some of them to go on to shape the Essex and national agricultural and rural communities, as so many ex-Essex Young Farmers have done in the past.

CHAPLAIN’S CHAPTER
REVD JANET NICHOLLS
It has been wonderful to see some of you face-to-face in recent weeks and great to hear of YFC plans for the autumn. I’m delighted to be able to invite you all to the Essex County Harvest Festival in Chelmsford Cathedral this year. At 3:30pm on Sunday 26th September, Essex Young Farmers will lead the procession into the cathedral, heralding the start of our Harvest Thanksgiving. Last year, the Covid restrictions limited our Harvest Festivals so I’m hugely looking forward to this opportunity to gather again to express our thanks to all our county’s farmers. We have lots to celebrate: the fantastic contribution of our key-worker farmers and food producers during lockdown, some special Essex farm-business success stories and the commitment to a carbon-neutral agricultural industry by 2040.
ESSEX COUNTY HARVEST SERVICE Farming for our Future
The service also gives us chance to assure farmers of our thoughts and prayers as they face some uncertain years ahead. With those uncertainties in mind, Chelmsford Cathedral is planning an installation entitled ‘Farming for our Future’. Chelmsford Cathedral welcomes many visitors each day. Visitors often use the cathedral’s peaceful space to quietly reflect on the issues of the day. Between 19th September and 2nd October 2021, visitors will be offered the opportunity to reflect on ‘Farming for our Future’. The installation will include photographs representing the diversity of Essex farming and pieces written by farmers describing the hopes, dreams and challenges of ‘Farming for our Future’. I would be delighted if you could contribute a written piece (between 12 and 100 words) and/or photographs for the installation. The text will be displayed anonymously; the photographs require written permission and will be credited e.g. ‘Photograph reproduced with the permission of _________’. Please submit text and photographs to me at jnicholls@chelmsford.anglican.org by Monday 6th September 2021. In the meantime, have a great summer. Keep safe and take great care if you are working long harvest hours. As always, be assured of my thoughts and prayers. God bless.
