I am aware of certain inaccurate statements that have been circulating on social media in the last few days. I wish therefore to advise fans of the true position. First the Board is as disappointed as everyone with the recent results. Ollie has gone on record as to how he intends to make changes in January. The Board fully supports him in this, and funds will be available to enable him to do this. We have to bear in mind that we do have a salary cap this season and we are already not far short of the maximum we can spend. Notwithstanding this we will fully support Ollie in his decisions on squad changes. There is no truth whatsoever that any player has been told to get a second job whilst on furlough. I do not know where that rumour emanated from, but it is completely fictitious. Another statement is that John Fenty takes £50,000 a year out of the Club. Totally untrue. He takes nothing. Three years ago, there was a part payment of his loan when the Board agreed that there were sufficient funds to do this. Since then, there have been no repayments. The Club does not operate with a Bank overdraft or Bank loan facility and should there be a shortfall this or any other season then the directors remain available to plug any gaps as they always have been.
OLLIE HAS GONE ON RECORD AS TO HOW HE INTENDS TO MAKE CHANGES IN JANUARY. THE BOARD FULLY SUPPORTS HIM IN THIS
There has also been a suggestion that the Board have turned down an offer from Mr Tom Shutes to acquire the Club. Again untrue. I refer to the statement in the press I made several months ago. The door is always open and if Mr Shutes wishes to speak to me and put forward proposals which satisfy the requirements of the EFL (as recently amended following the fiasco of the Bury and Macclesfield clubs) with regard to ownership then I will be pleased to talk to him. No one wants to censor social media but there is a difference between legitimate criticism and unfounded and untrue statements. The unfounded statements I have referred to above fall into the latter category. I wish the players all the best in the games to come and assure them that we are all behind them in their efforts. I hope fans will soon be back in the ground to cheer them on. UTMM Philip

REPORT IT.
KICK IT OUT OF FOOTBALL.
IAN HOLLOWAY THE GAFFER:
Good evening everyone reading these notes ahead of our game against the league leaders Newport County. Mike Flynn is doing an excellent job and they will no doubt be tough opponents this evening. Looking back at our 2-1 defeat at Colchester at the weekend, football can be a horrible game when you don’t get what you deserve. But in terms of keeping the ball out of our net and putting it in theirs, we failed again. We went 1-0 down to another poor goal. I was horrified as the ball came across and we just watched it like goldfish! It was a great flick by Luke Hendrie to get us back on level terms but how we managed to lose the game I do not know. There’s no doubt in my mind that we should have got a tackle in on their player outside the box before he scored their second. But we didn’t and it even bobbled around people’s legs before ending up in the back of the net. As the away team, we’ve created a lot of decent chances, but my lads weren’t clinical enough. At the end, for all of the pressure we put them under, not one of my lads picked a spot to aim at - they were just snatching at the opportunities and lashing it towards goal. For me, we made far too many mistakes and in the second half we were too sloppy going forward. Those moments are absolutely crucial in games and if you think about our win last year one person managed to produce a moment of magic to win a game. That said, at least when the lads put in a performance like that, you can see the light at the end of the tunnel. When a team outpasses you, like Tranmere did, it’s quite degrading. I’d argue that we were as good as we were at Cheltenham apart from putting the ball in the back of the net but there ain’t no point deserving something if you aren’t prepared to go and make it yours! However, that’s life. I’ve looked back at the game and asked the lads if they believe in themselves as much as I believe in them. Because when they do, we’ll start growing. Hopefully we’ll see that in their performance tonight. Ollie

MACCA CAPTAIN’S COLUMN:
Evening everyone. We have been through plenty of tough times as a club since I have been here, as well as lots of highlights. At the minute, it feels tough. As well as I believe we played on Saturday, ultimately this is a results business and we didn’t win. We need to be better in both boxes. However, when things aren’t going well in life you have two choices: you either feel sorry for yourself and find excuses and give up, or you keep battling and driving and eventually come through. All we can do as players and individuals is try and do our jobs - of course that becomes harder when things aren’t going well for you as a group or an individual - but giving up should never be an option and I/we won’t. We know things need to improve, but actions speak a lot louder than words so we need to show that rather than talk about showing that.
HOPEFULLY IT WON’T BE TOO LONG UNTIL WE HAVE SOME OF YOU BACK IN BLUNDELL PARK WHERE YOU BELONG... I GENUINELY BELIEVE WITH OUR FANS, THAT WILL MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE
On a side note, hopefully it won’t be too long until we have some of you back in Blundell Park where you belong. From the bottom of my heart, I genuinely believe with our fans, that will make a big difference because of how good our fans can be. Hopefully everyone is starting to get ready for xmas now. I think it always feels more festive as the games start to come Saturday/Tuesday. Stay safe and hopefully see you soon! UTM, Macca

DANNY ROSE
IN THE SPOTLIGHT C
lassy midfielder Danny Rose is currently enjoying a prolonged run in Ian Holloway’s team.
The 32-year-old, who’s already won promotion from League Two three times in his career, joined the Mariners in the summer and has so far clocked up 13 appearances for Town - 9 of those coming in the last 9 games. Rose was in the Manchester United academy as a teenager and spent five years at Old Trafford before joining Oxford United in the Conference following a promising loan spell. After a season with The U’s, Rose signed for Newport County and was a big part of their side who won the Conference South title in 2009/10 and challenged for a place in the Conference play-offs a year later. In total, he played 165 times for Newport, scoring 35 times. Midway through the 2011/12 season, he left Rodney Parade for Fleetwood Town and helped The Fishermen earn a place in the Football League. Following a loan spell with Aldershot, Rose returned to Oxford United and appeared almost 100 more times for The U’s before a switch to Northampton Town, where he won promotion from League Two for the first time in his career. In 2016, Rose joined Portsmouth and made 40 appearances as Pompey claimed the League Two title. However, a broken leg cut short his time in League One and ultimately his spell on the South Coast. After a difficult year recovering from injury, he signed for Swindon Town in January 2019 and appeared 23 times as The Robins won League Two last season. Calm in possession and strong in the tackle, Rose has become an important part of The Mariners engine room this season.

fter the disappointing defeat against Colchester, when the overall performance deserved much more, the games continue to come thick and fast and tonight we welcome league leaders Newport County which obviously will be another very difficult game. A positive result tonight would give everyone such a big lift at the start of a busy schedule. Good luck Lads!
MARINERS TRUST
Throughout December, we will be helping the club by opening the Trust bar on weekdays 10-1pm as well as Thursdays 4-6pm and Sundays 10-1pm. This will be to relieve pressure on the shop which has limited capacity due to Covid regulations. Season ticket holders will be able to come along and collect their free calendar and also anyone who has a click and collect order can pick it up from us during these times. As previously mentioned in our notes, this year, more than any other, it is the time of year to remember those less fortunate than ourselves. We are therefore repeating what we did last year and asking for donations of packaged and canned groceries with good shelf life for the local food bank. Also new toys for local children who otherwise wouldn’t get anything and pet goods for the Ark Animal Rescue. All of these can be brought to us at the bar during these times. Thanks to everyone who have already donated, it makes such a difference to those in need. If you are looking for top up Christmas presents, we have a couple of great books for you. There are still around 50 copies of the 1979-80 Champions book left but once they are gone, they are gone, we will not be reprinting. Those who have already purchased will confirm what a great book this is for any GTFC fan, even if they were not lucky enough to have been around to witness what was one of the best ever seasons for the club.
WE ARE THEREFORE REPEATING WHAT WE DID LAST YEAR AND ASKING FOR DONATIONS OF PACKAGED AND CANNED GROCERIES WITH GOOD SHELF LIFE FOR THE LOCAL FOOD BANK. ALSO NEW TOYS FOR LOCAL CHILDREN WHO OTHERWISE WOULDN’T GET ANYTHING AND PET GOODS FOR THE ARK ANIMAL RESCUE
The author, Rob McIlveen, has been hard at it again and produced another book in the same style in time for Christmas. This one is called First Champions and tells the story of 1900-01 and the first Grimsby Town team to win their league. This is strictly limited edition with 120 copies available and they expected to be delivered later this week. We already have a number of pre orders which can be done on our website shop or come and see us in the Trust bar. Once delivered we will have stock in the Trust bar, the Club Shop and also the new market stall in top town but we strongly advise pre-ordering if you want a copy. Many thanks to Rob who is doing a magnificent job in preserving really important parts of the club’s incredible history. Finally, a message to junior supporters, watch out for some exciting news on a new Junior Mariners club. More details in the next programme notes. Enjoy the game and keep the faith! THE JUNIORS’ JAUNT A FOCUS ON THE YOUTH TEAM
Our U18’s side saw off local rivals Scunthorpe United in a closely contested game at Cheapside. Both sides started the game well with some good passing football on display. United looked to have more cutting edge and it was they who took the lead when a cross was met with a superb header.

The visitors thought they took the lead only for the goal to be ruled out for offside. However, Town continued to work hard and created the match-winning opportunity when Davey’s clever ball found U16’s Harry Milner who poked home five minutes from time to give the Mariners the points.

Town equalised immediately with a very similar goal when Blakeley’s cross found Essel who headed home with power to bring the scores level. The hosts then had chances through Essel again, before Potts forced the keeper into a smart save. At the other end, Scunthorpe missed two good chances after failing to hit the target on both occasions. The second half was just as entertaining as the first. Town played the better football but the Iron created the better chances.

10. JOSH SHEEHAN
After a fine start to the season, Josh Sheehan recently won his first full international cap for Wales and is now playing for his place at the Euros next summer! The 25-year-old has been an ever present in Newport’s midfield this season and his classy performances in the middle of the park has reportedly attracted the attention of plenty of League One and Championship clubs. The Welshmen signed for The Exiles in 2018 after being released by his boyhood club, Swansea City. Although he captained their U21s team, Sheeham never managed a senior appearance for The Swans, instead gaining his experience in loan spells with Yeovil Town and Newport prior to making the switch permanent two seasons ago. Now the Welsh playmaker is an integral part of Mike Flynn’s team.
MIDFIELDER
14. JAMIE DEVITT
Jamie Devitt will be a very familiar face to Mariners fans this evening, as the Irishman had two loan spells at Blundell Park, one at the end of the ill fated 2009/10 season, the other during the 2012/13 campaign. Schooled in the Hull City academy, Devitt had a short spell at Chesterfield before enjoying two successful years at Morecambe, where he made just short of 100 appearances. Signed by Carlisle United in 2016, the technically-gifted winger helped the Cumbrians challenge for promotion under Keith Curle and twice returned goal tallies of double figures for the season. Poached from Carlisle by Blackpool in 2019, Devitt arrived at Rodney Parade on loan in October and has already scored twice in six appearances.

FORWARD
11. TRISTAN ABRAHAMS
Tristan Abrahams has been in scintillating form The Exiles so far this season with eight goals from 20 appearances. The young striker who moved to Rodney Parade from Norwich City in 2019 hasn’t looked back since scoring a brace in Newport’s EFL Cup win against Championship Swansea City on the opening day of the season. 21-yearold Abrahams is a Londoner and progressed through the ranks at Leyton Orient before signing for Norwich City for an undisclosed fee in 2017. Abrahams gained experience on loan at Exeter City the first half of 2018/19 and then Yeovil Town for the remainder of the campaign. Release by The Canaries in 2019, Abrahams moved to South Wales and became a regular in Mike Flynn’s side, scoring 10 goals in 46 appearances last season.

ANY GAME AT RODNEY PARADE IN THE 1960S AND 1970S!
Go back 50 or 60 years, buy the Grimsby Telegraph on a Monday night, and read the in-depth report on the game rather than the nuts and bolts that were given in the Sports Telegraph, and there, always, was a grainy photo of PROPER football stands under unseen floodlights in a far-off place that oozed the essence of real football! Magic. Definitely one, or indeed more than one of Six of the Best!
OF THE BEST
vs NEWPORT COUNTY By John Kirk
NEWPORT COUNTY 0-2 TOWN 19TH AUGUST 1961
A great start to the season in so many ways. The season is always going to be one of the best EVERY August, but maybe we should have realised that this season was going to be rather special when Mike Cullen, a vastly under-rated inside forward scored both goals in the first match of the season. In fact Mike was on fire, and it took “goal machine” Ron Rafferty until the end of September before he overhauled Cullen to be top scorer! Anyway, as we all know, despite being down in 12th spot at Christmas, we went on to achieve promotion behind Portsmouth in a storming second half of the season.
TOWN 4-2 NEWPORT COUNTY 15TH JANUARY 1972
TOWN 4-2 NEWPORT COUNTY 25TH FEBRUARY 2020
Town had had a great start to the 1971/72 season, but things went a bit off track from mid-October to the end of November. Maybe it was the distraction of the League Cup, and in particular the League Cup match v Norwich City. “The best game of football I have ever seen!” as the ref stated immediately afterwards. It took wins against Bury, Barrow, Southend and Newport to get us back on track. Who scored … well there was a brace from Brace (sorry!), a rare goal from Rathbone and an own goal.
There were already serious problems with the pandemic when we last met, but not ones that affected football back then. 3,578 Town fans turned up, along with 27 from Newport. I wonder how many would turn up tonight for both teams given half a chance? Anyway, Town took an immediate lead through Bradley Garmston, Newport pulled the game level 9 minutes later and Josh Benson gave Town a half-time lead. James Hanson put us two clear again after 61 minutes, Newport reduced the arrears, but sub Max Wright restored the two-goal advantage 7 minutes from time. When will we be able to see live games like that again?
TOWN 3-0 NEWPORT COUNTY 20TH APRIL 2013
The final game of the season before both teams entered the dreaded play-offs, and Town claimed all the bragging rights, with goals from Jamie Devitt, Andi Thanoj and Liam Hearn all before half-time. We’ll forget to mention the following two play-off games versus Newport if you don’t mind.
PODGE
Podge has to come in to any “Six of the Best!” One of the most popular players in recent years, and a prolific scorer of crafted goals. He never played for us against Newport (lucky Newport!), as we were in different leagues for the season he was with us. The best-of-friends-rivalry with Macca will doubtless continue this evening!

CONNECTIONS:
PADRAIG AMOND Padraig Amond will be fondly remembered for his 11-month spell at Blundell Park. However, it’s with Newport County that the Irishman became one of the most well-known strikers in the Football League. Signed by Paul Hurst on a one-year deal after his release from Morecambe in summer 2015, Amond scored on his Mariners debut in the 2-2 draw at Kidderminster on the opening day of the 2015/16 National League season. More goals followed against Bromley, Aldershot Town and Chester before the Irishman lost his place in the Town side when Hurst brought in Ben Tomlinson on a month’s loan from Barnet. Amond’s short spell on the sidelines seemed to ignite the former Shamrock Rovers forward and he returned to the starting eleven against FC Halifax Town to score four in the 7-0 demolition. Amond’s prolific form continued with braces against Harrogate Town, Woking, Barrow and Bognor Regis Town and two further hat-tricks against Welling United and Woking later in the season. By the end of the 2015/16 campaign, the striker had plundered 36 goals in just 46 games - his goals helping The Mariners to a 4th place finish in the National League and a place in the play-offs. Amond’s 37th goal of the season - and most important in a black and white shirt - came in the play-off semi final second leg victory at Braintree Town that took Town to the Promotion Final at Wembley against Forest Green Rovers, which ended in victory. His sublime form throughout the campaign earned Amond a number of accolades, including the club’s Player of The Year award. However, the striker turned down the chance to extend his stay at Blundell Park, choosing instead to sign for League Two rivals Hartlepool United on a two-year deal. Although Amond finished the season top scorer at Victoria Park, he’s goalscoring couldn’t stop Hartlepool from being relegated to the National League in 2016/17. Just a few weeks into the 2017/18 season, he signed for Newport County after boss Mike Flynn had spent the majority of the summer chasing the striker’s services. Amond hit the headlines when he scored Newport’s goal in the FA Cup fourth round draw with Tottenham Hotspur and finished the season as the club’s top-scorer with 14 goals. The following season Amond was in sparkling form for The Exiles, scoring 23 times throughout the campaign, including the goal that dumped Premier League Leicester City out of the FA Cup. His exploits in front of goal even earned the former Town player a call up to the Republic of Ireland squad for the first time in his career. Amond hit 13 goals last season (a relatively modest return for the prolific frontman) but so far this campaign, he’s found the back of the net six times, including five in his last 10 games. Hopefully, the talismanic striker has an uncharacteristically quiet evening back at his old stomping ground!

THE
ITALIAN JOB
John Kirk looks back at when a little Italian from Brescia almost took the Mariners to the Premier League.
Buckley had left for West Brom and had taken one or two Town players with him. In his place, Brian Laws was appointed to continue Town’s fifth season in Division One. “Just remember this - in this country they drive on the wrong side of the road.”
decent Division One players, but Bonetti was special. He could fly down the left wing and put over crosses to our front runners that had invitations to shoot tied to the ball. It was stunning, exciting, unbelievable! What was a top-notch Italian doing at little old Grimsby? Don’t think about it, just enjoy the moment! “You’re only supposed to blow the doors off!”
Laws was looking round for talent, “rough diamonds” as he called them, and Chris Hargreaves was the first to have the moniker applied to him. Ancient Mariner, fan favourite, and my top Town player of recent times (if not all time!) Paul Futcher had left as the 1995-96 season got off to a steady start of three wins, two defeats and four draws. Meanwhile rumours were going the rounds of an Italian playing for the Reserves, and showing obvious flair. People were getting all misty eyed, and talking in reverential tones about Town Reserves. The Reserves for goodness sake!
Town started winning. They started attracting larger crowds. They started attracting national attention as Bonetti fever tightened its grip. Bonetti was a one-man PR success. He was everywhere in the area, mixing with the public, who would turn up in their droves to meet and greet him! Nothing like this had ever been seen in the area before… probably nothing like it had ever been seen in Britain before. Grimsby loved Bonetti, and Bonetti loved Grimsby, in every way possible. Town climbed to second place! The Premier League was beckoning!
Even before Ivano Bonetti, who had been born in Brescia and played nine stints with top Italian clubs including Torino, Juventus, and Sampdoria, was in the first team, the Grimsby area was going Italian-mad! There was a problem with his contract which was held by an American Company “World Soccer Promotions” which just had to be sorted out. Eventually a loan period was agreed, and the area could see how Bonetti could fit in to Blundell Park’s finest. Well, it was just like watching Juve! as the faithful have sung many times. Town’s first team could boast some
The last match of his loan spell was against Buckley’s West Brom. Blundell Park was sold out. In a tense match things were all square and stuck on 0-0 until Bonetti set off on one of his trademark runs, dribbles, down the left, into the centre, bearing down on the Osmond Stand and “Gooooooooooaaaaaaaaallllll!” His first goal for Town, and the only goal of the game! “Hang on a minute, lads; I’ve got a great idea.” So, loan spell up, and the prospect of Grimsby’s favourite Italian heading away from Blundell Park. Could we buy out his contract with World Soccer Promotions?
28
There was a catch, we’re told. The American company wasn’t recognised by the Football League, so Town couldn’t deal directly with them! Once more, Town fans came to the rescue as they had with Joey Waters, and have since with Operation Promotion… THEY would pay half the £100K buyout, and Bonetti himself would buy out the other half. Buckets were rattled, notes, cheques and coins were dropped in, and before you could say “England is thataway!” the money was raised and Bonetti was free to play for us again. He had missed the game following the victory over the Throstles due to his status not being sorted out, but then played the next 13 on the bounce. With the release of Bonetti from his contract, he encouraged other Italians to come to Grimsby for trials, including Enzo Gambaro and Luca Pelligrini!
of our fans (that I might be married to!), and that was enough for him to reverse right into a brand new Merc belonging to a Luton Director. Worse was to follow. Town were leading in the game, with two goals from Jamie Forrester to one from Graham Alexander, but somehow the Town defence with Forest loanee Vance Warner making a rare appearance, managed to lose the match late on. We on-looking supporters were somewhat stunned, and many made the homeward journey in near silence. Whatever occurred in the Town dressing room was unlikely to have been conducted in silence, though there has been a distinct lack of explanation. However, all explanations appear to include the words, flying, plate, chicken, cheekbone and wings. “The Self Preservation Society” Gradually news leaked out of trouble in the dressing room. It didn’t stop Town, minus Bonetti, winning the Cup replay with West Ham on a famous BP evening, but the facial injury to Bonetti couldn’t be hidden. Bonetti missed the next 16 games, though Enzo Gambaro made his 23 minutes of Town action when replacing Nicky Southall from the bench. Gambaro had been valued at £2 million!
“You must have shot an awful lot of tigers. Yes, I used a machine gun.” His first game after the contract buyout was, ironically with hindsight, away at Tranmere (his final game for the Mariners was at home against Tranmere!). Town’s next few league games were nothing to write home about as far as results were concerned, though three of those were against Leicester, Norwich and Huddersfield - we’d write home about those games being drawn these days! - but the presence of Bonetti in the team ensured a near full house. Next up, the FA Cup Round Three, and Town drawn at home to Luton. Seven goals were smashed past the Hatters, Jamie Forrester (2), Livvo (2), Neil Woods, Nicky Southall and another Bonetti special!
Bonetti made three more appearances for the Mariners after an on-the-field handshake with Laws, but left for Tranmere at the end of the season. Bonetti and the Mariners fans were still in love with one another, and rumours circulated of the Italian buying the Club, or of others taking over and installing him in the Town hot-seat, but this never came to fruition. His last appearance at Blundell Park was in a friendly for Dundee, whom he was managing at the time.
The fourth round saw the Mariners drawn against West Ham at the Boleyn ground, with Mariners fans swelling the crowd to over 22,000, and with Iain Dowie and Brian Laws each scoring to bring the game back to BP.
The end had come, but as it did, we were all left wondering what would have happened if the Bonetti bus hadn’t ended overhanging a cliff. A glorious chapter that ended frustratingly. But had it not happened, then neither would 1997-98 - think on that, and perhaps, eventually, it turned out for the best!
“You wouldn’t hit a man with no trousers on, would you?” The Mariners love affair with Ivano was still going strong, and a league visit to Kenilworth Road, Luton was looked on with great hope. The day didn’t start well. The team bus was reversing into its parking space, but the driver was distracted by waving to one
