ESSEX YOUNG FARMERS WINTER 2021
Hey everyone, My name is Erin, and I will be taking on the role of Magazine Editor 202122. I have some very big shoes to fill, as I’m sure you’ll all agree, Felicity did such an amazing job at turning the magazine into what it is today. I have been a member of Colchester Young Farmers for four years, and in that time, I have been their Secretary, Parents & Subscribers Rep and Press Rep. I am also the Social Media Rep for County this year. When I am not at Young Farmers, I work as a Lean Technician at a manufacturing company in Colchester, whilst studying towards my degree in Engineering. I’m looking forward to sharing with you everything our Clubs have been up to already and the activities they have planned throughout the year. We hope you all have a great Christmas and New Year and can’t wait for things to return to normal. Speak soon!

COUNTY REPORTS
COUNTY CHAIRMAN ELLIE GEMMILL
How have we entered the festive period already? The last few months have certainly been keeping me busy, flying around the county from AGMs to firework displays. We started the year helping out behind the bar at the Countess of Warwick show, which was held in Dunmow over the August bank holiday weekend. The two-day event was very well attended and it was hard to go home empty-handed with the great variety of trade stands on display. To officially kick off the Young Farmer year, we held a County party in September, where we saw 100+ people through the doors! It was the first County party since the Golden Welly Ball and it’s safe to say people weren’t out of practise when they drank the bar dry! Many thanks go to the Willett family for their endless help and support in allowing us to use Parklands Farm as party central again in Galleywood. As a thank you to everyone who had helped County through the covid period, we organised a wine and cheesetasting evening at Clayhill Vineyard, kindly hosted by Dale Simmons and Lizzy Tresadern. The evening was wonderful and filled with interesting facts and history of the vineyard and the process of wine making, not to mention the beautiful setting overlooking the River Crouch on a late summer evening, listening to the tractors at work. The last weekend of September saw the County Ploughing Match held at Hatfield Regis Farm and I’m certain every competitor had a smile on their face as they pulled up to park. The range of machinery went from working horses, a Doe Triple D to the larger scale Fendt tractors. The event had an outstanding attendance, and luckily enough Ongar Young Farmers were on parking duty. The following day we had the County Harvest Festival held at Chelmsford Cathedral; Young Farmers did a wheelbarrow procession into the cathedral, each wheelbarrow containing the theme of “Farming for our Future” - ideas varied from Skyscraper Farming to Anaerobic Digestion Plant. As always, Rev. Janet Nichols held a wonderful service, with a fantastic interview with Paul Kelly from Kelly Turkeys and Dr Robin Gowers, Senior Lecturer of Writtle University College. The refreshments were supplied by Kelly Turkeys, tantalising for the taste buds. If you haven’t already got your turkey for the big day, I suggest you make a last minute order with Kellys!

October welcomed the Harvest Supper season, beginning with Dunmow and Ashdon & Saffron Waldon’s joint evening. It was great to see everyone letting their hair down and enjoying the relaxed evening with a classic dinner followed by some rather questionable shapeshifting on the dance floor, but I won’t mention any names! It soon came round to Colchester’s Harvest Ball. It was great to finally dust off the ball dresses and head off to an occasion. Colchester as a club have achieved so much in the last two years, I’ve never known a club to have handed out so many awards! Dunmow held another dinner and dance evening for their members and subscribers. I had the delight of dancing to Miles and his band, who never fail to impress! Following through into November, there were a number of clubs with some scintillating firework displays, audiences ranging from 50 to 500! Each club had a yummy spread of BBQ goods and home-baked treats made by the members - Mary Berry had some competition! Up next at County, we have our Annual General Meeting where we will be saying goodbye to Miles Leeder, County President. Miles has been a huge help throughout the last two years and I’m not quite sure where we would be without his endless amount of enthusiasm, dedication and optimism that he’s pumped into Young Farmers. I’m sure he’s excited about his retirement as President so he can resume his trips abroad, musical lifestyle and Grandfather duties! But I’m sure this will not be the last we see of Miles as he has assured us he will always be around to help Young Farmers!
Miles Leeder at Chelmsford Cathedral for the Harvest Service
As we say goodbye to Miles, I’d like to take this opportunity to welcome Jane Carey to the committee as our new President of Essex Young Farmers. Looking forward to starting a new year with no covid interruptions (fingers crossed!) Over the Christmas period, keep your eyes peeled for clubs selling Christmas trees to grab yourself a bargain! There will also be clubs collecting trees after the festive season as we enter 2022! For now, I wish you and your families a Merry Christmas and many happy returns for the new year!

PRESIDENT SIGNING OFF MILES LEEDER
I
t is only right that I should put pen to paper one last time as my two-year tenure came to a close last month. My time as President has taken a path that was certainly not expected and it has been a busy two years, but for many different reasons.
know who you all are and they certainly do not go unnoticed.
A huge hole of social engagements, parties, competitions and weekly meetings and two Shows would have seen many organisations fall by the wayside. The Federation had to make sweeping changes and adapt to a pandemic. As we see light at the end of the tunnel, I am humbled that Young Farmers are bouncing back with an extra dose of enthusiasm. Perhaps it has taken a lifechanging event to actually see the true value of our organisation and what we really stand for. We have seen an immense support and passion to keep Young Farmers alive through some tough times, but this doesn’t just happen. There is a long list who have supported us in the last two years - you
I have had the pleasure of working with some talented young people who have taken on some difficult decisions and Club Chairmen that could have easily just walked away from a desperate situation. Some have taken the thankless task of continuing the role for two years and now see their Clubs stronger than ever. Others have now built their Clubs up from nothing and are now reaping the benefits of a wave of new members eager to carry on the great work of their predecessors. So, as the calendar of events is filling up and a full programme for the new year to keep the everincreasing membership busy, all I can say is get stuck in, do as much as you possibly can. I have never regretted anything I have done in Young Farmers (well, perhaps a few misdemeanours, years ago!) but there is so much you can learn within the Federation that you probably will not realise until you have left.
I am leaving the Federation knowing that your new President, Jane Carey, will guide you to a stronger future. I wish her and Richard all the very best for the next two years. We have a great Federation which is the envy of our national body and I’m in no doubt that your new President will enjoy sharing that continued success with you all. Thank you all for some great times in a difficult situation, and meeting the unprecedented challenges head on. You will all reflect on these in years to come and be proud of what you have achieved. Merry Christmas. Signing off, but not out!
Miles Leeder
PRESIDENT’S REPORT JANE CAREY
Hello to all Essex Young Farmers. I’m Jane Carey and I am looking forward to being your President for the next couple for years, all being well.
I have very many wonderful friends of long standing in the farming community and I will be turning to them during my Presidency for technical advice and guidance, so watch out.
I joined Witham YFC back in the last century and during my time I became Club Secretary, Treasurer and Chairman (as it was in those days). I was also County Girls Chairman, a committee basically there to organise the boys!
Many of you will know my family - James, who was Maldon’s Chairman and then County Chairman in 2017-18 and Richard, my husband, who has been a Vice-President and unofficial team photographer; you would have seen him behind the lens at Prelims Days and A.G.Ms.
I do not come from a farming background, having worked for Lloyds Bank for 41 years, but as the advertising says: ‘You don’t have to be a farmer to become a Young Farmer’.
I look back on my Young Farmer days with great fondness - it was through Young Farmers that I met my husband (spoiler) and made loads of friends that I still keep in touch with today, and
these friends have helped me through the ups and downs of life and particularly in the last year, thank you to them. A big thank you to Miles for the past couple of years as President. Essex has been through a difficult time, but we’re beginning to come out the other side stronger and more united mainly due to Miles’ leadership and the behind-the-scenes work of many people’s efforts. It will be a great honour to be your President and I will endeavour to do you proud.

NFYFC PRESIDENT It was an honour to be elected as your President for a second year – even if I did have to experience another online election due to pandemic restrictions. Despite not being able to see you all in person at this year’s Annual General Meeting, I still enjoyed chairing the event and hearing some lively debate from YFC members. And such great news that you voted to extend the upper membership age by another two years – even longer for people to enjoy the benefits of YFC. Being your President has extended my time in YFC just that little bit longer too, which I am extremely grateful for – and especially so during the 90th year of our national federation. There are so many stories, like mine, from people whose lives have been transformed over the past nine decades, thanks to the skills and friendships they gained in YFC. Long may that continue. As we look ahead, the industry faces huge challenges with changes in agricultural policy, new international trade deals and the climate change debate. YFC gives the next generation the chance to get their voices heard on these issues, and I hope you all grab those opportunities with both hands. Your future in agriculture counts on it. The pandemic has cast a shadow over all our lives and many of you will have faced your own personal battles or tragedies throughout this difficult period. Living remotely in rural locations has only exacerbated loneliness during lockdowns and made us all realise the importance of our YFC get togethers. Well done to all those clubs and counties that moved activities to an online format during lockdowns, your time and creativity was a huge support to many. And a big pat on the back to all those who have organised safe meetings again for their members and are encouraging more people to join (or re-join) the organisation. Your hard work will ensure YFC remains a constant in our lives. It is reassuring to see competition finals and training are happening in person again, social events and fundraisers are being organised, and more people are appreciating all that YFC has to offer. NFYFC might be 90, but its enthusiasm for supporting and developing rural young people has never wavered since it first began in 1932. Let’s all play our part in making YFC even bigger and better this membership year and protecting what we love for future generations. Nigel Owens MBE NFYFC President 2021-22

COUNTY OFFICE MATTERS JENNY MASKELL
Hello from County Office! By the time you sit and read this, I will have been here a year now, and even with the bizarre year we have had, where has the time gone? We started this year off by hitting the ground running with a party in September, where I finally got to meet lots of our members and see some of Essex’s countryside. It was great just to get out and meet you all, even if I was the other side of the bar to you all. Membership is definitely on the up compared to last year with forms still rolling in, and now
with a full calendar of events for the year, there is plenty to do. This also includes a monthly social evening/traditional pub night at the County building, bringing all the clubs together for an evening of pub games, pool and inter-club competitions.

COUNTY AGM REPORT
WEDNESDAY 25TH NOVEMBER 2021 SAW ESSEX YFC HOST ITS ANNUAL COUNTY AGM AT WHITBREAD’S BARN. THE EVENING SAW A ROOM FULL OF MEMBERS, COMMITTEE MEMBERS, VPs AND GUESTS COME TOGETHER TO CELEBRATE THE SUCCESSES OF THE PAST YEAR.
The meeting was chaired by our outgoing President, Miles Leeder, to whom we must say a huge thank you for all of the support throughout the past two years. A warm welcome was given to our incoming President, Jane Carey, who we know will continue the great work and support passed on from Miles. The most poignant part of the evening had to be the awards ceremony, which was a celebration of all the incredible members and Clubs that have gone above and beyond this year to make Young Farmers the best it can be. Every award was hugely deserved and the winners have made EYFC extremely proud. We look forward to welcoming another deserving set of winners this year! To top off what was already an extraordinary evening, we had the pleasure of welcoming Charlie Ireland (who you may all know as “Cheerful Charlie” from Clarkson’s Farm). Charlie provided us with a wonderful presentation on the Agriculture Act, climate change in the next decade and the implications on farming businesses. He produced some incredible facts that left many of us open-mouthed. We must thank Charlie for making such a long journey to transform what most people would call ‘just a boring meeting’, into one that was fascinating and also comedic... he did, of course, tell us some stories about working with Jeremy Clarkson and the film crew. We look forward to seeing him again on our screens in 2023!

CLUB CHAIRMAN Hamish Beaton
Hello everyone! So, the new Young Farmers year has come around again and, hopefully, we will be able to do a lot more than we did last year! I’d like to start this report by welcoming in our new Club Chairman, Hamish Beaton! He has been an Ash & Saff member for the past six-plus years, so we are all very excited to welcome him in. He has some fab ideas for this coming year!
LUCY HITCHCOCK
Since September, we have been busy getting new and old members back into the swing of our weekly Tuesday night meetings. This has included a joint tour with Dunmow around SRC Aggregates (thanks to Dunmow YFC for the invite!), a free alcohol night at The Kings Arms, crazy golf, pumpkin carving, bowling and a pub quiz. Our members have also enjoyed going to the parties that were noticeably absent last year and the games night which was held at the County building. We held a subscriber walk and brunch at the end of September. This was enjoyed by all who attended and it was lovely to see our subscribers after such a long time due to covid! Thanks to them all for their support. We held our Harvest Supper at Miles Leeder’s barn at the beginning of October, which this year we decided to do joint with Dunmow. We had a more casual affair with a hog roast and salads and puddings made by our members. I had some lovely, positive comments from everyone who attended. Thanks to everyone for coming and to Miles for kindly letting us use his barn. So, coming up in the Ash & Saff calendar… cocktail making evening, Spraytec tour, Christmas meal and so much more! If you know of anyone interested in joining, please let us know!

CLUB CHAIRMAN Ben Cove
Hi all! Following on from my short report in the last magazine, I am very pleased to say that Chelmsford has had a cracking start to the year!
DAN LOW
Although starting the year a bit later than planned due to a late harvest/drilling season, we’ve really hit the ground running as a Club and we’re now well on the way to having 20 signed up members, which as a Chairman is amazing post-covid! We kicked off the year with a social in our usual pub, just to catch up with each other over a few pints and to start organising the programme for the year.
SINCE THEN, WE’VE HAD A FEW REALLY GOOD MEETINGS OVER THE PAST COUPLE OF WEEKS, INCLUDING A FEW ROUNDS OF CRAZY GOLF WITH ONGAR
Since then, we’ve had a few really good meetings over the past couple of weeks, including a few rounds of crazy golf with Ongar which really showed I need to brush up on my golfing skills… things got very competitive! Next up was tractor driving, where we got all of our members involved in having a go at driving a few bits of kit round the yard, and even trying their hand at reversing some trailers and stacking pallets (definitely harder than it looks). There was a really great turnout and everyone really enjoyed it, particularly as some of our members don’t come from an agricultural background. It doesn’t stop there; we’ve got many more exciting meetings coming up in the programme over the next few weeks. So, if you’re interested in joining up, don’t hesitate to get in touch with either myself or County Office! But until then, stay safe and we’ll see you on the next one!

YF CLUB REPORT
CLUB CHAIRMAN George Paterson
Hey everyone, me again! As we begin a new Young Farmers year, it would only be right to highlight what an amazing job last year’s committee has done. Well done and congratulations to Ollie Weavers (2019-2021 Chairman), who not only managed to keep the club going during the most difficult time, but increased the Club membership by huge amounts. His, and his committee’s efforts, have been appreciated by everyone at Club and County level. During the summer months, many of our Club members were out on the fields feeding the nation. But in the meantime, the rest of us got up to some fun activities including crabbing on Mersea Island, Footgolf, rape seed and sunflower oil production tour and even a pool party. Thanks to Guy and Emily French from Foxes Farm Produce who allowed us to take over their recently completed swimming pool for the night and even cooked us a BBQ. It was great to see nearly every member of the Club turn up and have a bit of fun after a tough couple of years.
ERIN THOMAS
Tug of War (ToW), as always, must feature prominently in this report. This year, we formed a girls ToW team who worked incredibly hard and managed to get themselves to Eastern Area competitions. Unfortunately, they didn’t make it any further but will continue to train and push even harder into 2022. A massive thank you to Scott and Shannon Attmere from Attmere Plant Hire for putting their faith in us and sponsoring our fabulous new girls ToW tops and thank you to our new girls’ coach, Sue Tod. The boys team thrived this year, making it all the way to the National Finals in Staffordshire! They placed fifth overall but made Colchester and the whole of Essex County proud. The training will only get tougher from here, boys! Thanks to Chris ‘Denz’ Scott for training the boys since they started their journey, they all have such great respect for you… even if they take the p**s sometimes! The end of Ollie’s stint as Club Chairman was celebrated in style at our Annual Harvest Supper, which was obviously postponed last year due to the pandemic. The night saw over 120 attendees, which included Colchester members and subscribers, other Essex clubs, County representatives and our sponsors. Huge thanks to all our sponsors, especially our main sponsor Andrew Fairs from Fairking, we appreciate all the support.
The boys ToW team
This leads me on to congratulate and wish good luck to this year’s committee and Chairman, George Paterson, who has been in the Club for many years and is loved by every single member… Colchester YFC certainly wouldn’t be the same without him, even if he is on the receiving end of most wind ups! George and his committee have a lot of plans up their sleeves for this year, including a Christmas tree sale and collection and a Santa sleigh ride fundraiser. Their first event, fireworks, has already taken place and was a huge success. Thank you to all of the parents, subscribers and members that attended and supported the event (huge thanks to Guy and Emily French for hosting us).
The girls ToW team with sponsor, Scott Attmere
Our chosen charities for the year are St. Helena’s Hospice, who care for more than 3,900 local people facing incurable illness and bereavement each year and Headway, the brain injury association, who work to improve life after brain injury. Both of these charities are close to some of our members’ hearts and have been a big support for them, which is why they have been chosen this year. Please keep up the support, get involved and get in touch with our new members reps, Lucy and Issy, or George directly using the contact details below, if you, or anyone you know, would like to join us as a member or as a subscriber… we welcome anyone and everyone! CLUB CHAIRWOMAN Isla Wendelken
Hey everyone. It’s been great being able to return to some sort of normality again after a crazy two years! We have managed to survive three lockdowns and a lot of interruption to normal life, however Dunmow Young Farmers have come back better than ever. We have had a record-breaking number of new, budding members signing up to the Club and many existing members have stayed on for another funfilled, exciting year. Following in the footsteps of Chairman, Andrew Hutley, and his Secretary, Molly Lenton, the Club is very excited to welcome the new committee and announce our new Chairwoman, Isla Wendelken, and her Secretary, Tilly Worsick.
ISSY SMITH
Over the past couple of months we have been enjoying a range of activities, from a fantastic tour of SRC Aggregates’ gravel pit to pumpkin picking. In our tour with SRC we were very lucky to be shown around their grounds, with talks and demonstrations on how they extract the minerals from the raw material. SRC have very kindly said they would sponsor this year’s Club rugby shirt for our competitions and formal events. We are very excited to have these to give out to our members and we would like to thank SRC for their generosity and support. Back in October, together with Ashdon & Saffron Walden, we threw our long-awaited Harvest Supper which was a big success and had a brilliant turnout. To continue our successes, Dunmow also threw our Dinner and Dance at the end of October, which was again thoroughly enjoyed by all. We had Dunmow members new and old join us, members from neighbouring clubs, and finally, it was fabulous to see so many of our subscribers there to help us sing and dance the night away too. Dunmow are super keen this year to raise as much money as possible to help our local charities and community. As a club, we shall be attending Dunmow’s Christmas market on November 27th and we were delighted for Dunmow Council to ask for our support in marshalling the fantastic event. Following last year’s outstanding results of the Movember challenge, we are giving it another good go this year with guys creating all sorts of funky designs with their facial hair and the girls joining with their sponsored walks and runs. At the time of writing, we had achieved 60km over the month of November. We have lots of exciting things in the pipeline for next year, one big one being our 75th anniversary ball in April which we are all very eager to welcome you all to. Stay tuned! As Christmas is fast approaching, please keep a lookout for our advert, advertising our Christmas tree collection in the local area. We are also looking forward to celebrating this year’s festive season with all of our members at our Christmas meal, which will be held at The Compasses in Littley Green, on December 18th. A big thank you to them and their team for kindly catering for us all. As a Club, we hope everyone is staying safe and keeping well, as well as, doing what Young Farmers do best, making the best of friends whilst creating lifelong memories with an alcoholic beverage within arms reach! We wish you all a fantastic Christmas and new year! All the best,
Love Issy xx 16

Hi everyone, I hope you and your nearest are all well! As I write this, we’re halfway through November and Christmas is definitely on the radar. And, I have just realised that by the time you read this, we’ll be days away from starting 2022. Where on Earth has this year gone?! Halstead has certainly had an active start to the new membership year, and it’s been great to see a return to a more sociable (and I suppose “normal”) agenda of activities with faces both new and familiar joining us on Club nights.

GETTING BACK TOGETHER AS A CLUB HAS BEEN GREAT AND FOR MANY, THE SENSE OF COMMUNITY IS A LARGE PART OF THEIR YOUNG FARMERS EXPERIENCE (BOTH IN ESSEX AND BEYOND)
From pumpkin-carving to wreath-making nights, we’ve certainly been kept busy by a great programme of activities. However, our year started with an AGM, where we were lucky to receive a talk from BNOS Meditech, which I’d really like to tell you more about. Based locally in Halstead, BNOS Meditech is a British manufacturer of medical device equipment, supplying over 100 countries from around the world. As you can probably imagine, the products they manufacture were even more essential during the pandemic, and the talk provided a humbling reminder of the stark reality many faced over the previous eighteen months. We’re looking forward to a tour of the factory itself, which I hope to be telling you more about in the next magazine (in addition to our festive activities, too). Getting back together as a club has been great and for many, the sense of community is a large part of their Young Farmers experience (both in Essex and beyond). However, we know that through Young Farmers we have a great opportunity to support our local communities too. As a Club, we recently voted to support Home Start as our official charity for this year, whose volunteers provide support to families in times of need. Throughout December, we will be both learning more about the charity and supporting their work through upcoming activities such as wreath selling and Christmas tree collection. I’ll end our latest update here, but do keep an eye on our Facebook page for our latest news and updates ahead of the next edition of the magazine. I hope you and your families have a really lovely break over the festive period. Speak soon,

We kicked the new Young Farmers year off with a new members night, which was a great success. The activities were Halloweenthemed and rather on the creative side. I have to say, that’s the first time I’ve ever bowled with pumpkins. Following this, we have welcomed a number of new members, which is fantastic! Since then, we have had a variety of different meets such as pumpkin carving, axe throwing, ice skating, top golf… just to name a few.
New members night
In the build up to our annual fireworks night, we dedicated a meeting to the set-up. Everyone was all hands on to build a show-stopping fire, as David French was determined to have the biggest fire in Essex – I can confirm that he did not disappoint! Thanks again to all the people that donated the wood, a particular shout out to Josh Cook, not the man to take any 4x4 advice from, but certainly knows how to get stuck in (the mud). Now for the fireworks night itself, a night that went with a big bang, exceeding all of our expectations with a huge turnout of over 500 people! We raised a grand total of £1,300 for our chosen charity this year, Crohns and Colitis UK – which is a very close charity to us. A couple of events coming up that would have been and gone by the time this issue is out, are our quiz and annual Christmas tree selling. We hope to see many of your faces at these and hope that they follow the large success that we have had in previous years.
Axe throwing
Something to look forward to is our annual Christmas party on December 17th, under the Nativity theme! Make sure you’ve got your best Mary and Joseph outfits ready, it’s promising to be a good one. Lastly, a piece of major gossip that rocked the club. Grant Lofthouse has become a married man, who’d have thought?! Many congratulations! That’s it from Maldon for now. Have a great Christmas and see you in the new year! Pumpkin bowling

New members night
After a tough 18 months for everyone the Club is determined to have a brilliant year! The Club has had an exceptional start so far, with lots of new members and wellattended Club nights! We kicked the year off with new members night at Moreton Village Hall. Ongar, never shy of a competition, decided to include a challenge of who could bring the best substitute cup to drink from for the event. A variety of entries were brought along with the chosen winner being a kayaking helmet who has now had their place at our upcoming Christmas meal in midDecember paid for!

ONGAR YOUNG FARMERS’ CHOSEN CHARITY THIS YEAR IS YELLOW WELLIES, A FOUNDATION WHICH WORKS CLOSELY WITH YOUNG FARMERS CLUBS, HSE, THE FARM SAFETY PARTNERSHIPS AND A RANGE OF FARMING ORGANISATIONS TO HELP RAISE AWARENESS OF FARM SAFETY AMONG YOUNG FARMERS
Ongar Young Farmers’ chosen charity this year is Yellow Wellies, a foundation which works closely with Young Farmers Clubs, HSE, the Farm Safety Partnerships and a range of farming organisations to help raise awareness of farm safety among Young Farmers. They challenge and change attitudes towards farming safely and reduce the toll of injuries and fatalities which bring heartbreak and misery to numerous families and rural communities every year. We began this year’s fundraising with our fireworks event held at Shellow Cross Farm, Willingale. After many posters were shared, word had soon got out about the event and we subsequently had an incredible turnout of over 500 people, not just from Young Farmers but the Ongar community also! Members helped out in all aspects from set-up to BBQ, as well as our in-house baking competition judged by those who attended the event. There were many amazing bakes from lots of our members, however the winning cake was a Lotus Biscoff cake which was a very popular choice throughout the night! We managed to raise over £3,000 pounds for the charity in this event alone and it was also lovely to see much praise from locals who had attended the event and congratulated us on our efforts, it makes all the hard work definitely worth it!

The beginning of November saw us join Chelmsford Young Farmers at Back Yrd Golf in Chelmsford for a night of crazy golf. It was a chance to meet new members from another club as well as catch up with friends, and a good night was definitely had by all! As a club we are always pleased to see new faces join our little YF family! We are a mix of boys and girls ranging from 16-26 and not all from a farming background. We meet every Tuesday night, and if no activity is in place, just having a sit down and a laugh over dinner in the local pub is just one of the many things we do for fun.

SOUTHMINSTER
YF CLUB REPORT
CLUB CHAIRMAN Lizzy Tresadern
Hello! As I sit on the old typewriter, winter has well and truly set in. The evenings are dark and the days overcast, but this can only mean that harvest is over and Southminster YFC is back again! In September we had our AGM, seeing the old committee step down and a new one stand in… well, the old ones switch roles at any rate! So, a huge thank you to Lizzy for keeping the Club steady for the past two turbulent years, you can now sit back and relax as Secretary…! Congratulations to Issy becoming Chairman, all the members are looking forward to a great year ahead. With the AGM out of the way, we got back to regular Tuesday meetings. Issy got the ball rolling by showing us her work as an equine dentist. Then we were in party mode making decorations and pumpkins for our joint Halloween party with Brentwood... yes, a party after two long years! We’ve also been grape picking at Clayhill Vineyard - thank you to Dale for having us and Lizzy for showing us the ropes.

WHAT A NIGHT, IT WAS FANTASTIC TO SEE EVERYONE MAKE THE MOST OF THE BAR, THOUGH MAYBE A LITTLE TOO MUCH IN SOME CASES! IT WAS GREAT TO SEE SO MANY PEOPLE AND WE CERTAINLY CAN’T WAIT FOR THE NEXT ONE!
Finally, it was time for our party! Thank you to the Sell’s for having us, we hope we didn’t keep you up too late. What a night, it was fantastic to see everyone make the most of the bar, though maybe a little too much in some cases! It was great to see so many people and we certainly can’t wait for the next one! It was then November, which means fireworks. Thank you to Brentwood and Maldon for their outstanding displays, both firm favourites of Southminster. As well as fireworks, November is also a time of reflection and it was great to see members honour the fallen at the Maldon Remembrance service. Since then we have tried our hand at painting, yoga (I’m not as flexible as I thought, I can assure you!), Morris dancing (nor is my rhythm up to par!) and pottery painting. All of which we have enjoyed, even if I haven’t found my calling. Either way it has been a great few months and great to see new faces coming along too. Depending on when you get your magazines, I’ll either say; be warned, it is December and therefore we will soon be gracing our subscribers’ doors under the pretence of Christmas “carolling”. Alternatively, I hope the recovery is going well and your ears are starting to get back to normal! Either way, we hope that you are all keeping well and we look forward to seeing you all very soon! If we don’t bump into you before, we hope that you have a very merry Christmas and a happy new year. Until then,
Jack If you’re reading this and ever fancy coming along to a Southminster meeting then you can find us on Facebook and Instagram or contact Issy on 07814 166028 or southminsteryfc@gmail.com

THE ANNUAL TREASURE HUNT THAT PROVED TO BE QUITE DIFFICULT THIS YEAR WITH IT BEING HELD IN THE DARKNESS OF AN AUTUMNAL NIGHT, BUT DESPITE THIS, THE USUAL CHAOS WAS CAUSED AND LOTS OF FUN HAD BY ALL
First, let’s start at the beginning of the Young Farmers year in September, where we had our AGM. Here we said a fond farewell to our outgoing Chairman, Nathan Sprawling, and his committee, and welcomed in our new Chairwoman, Tamsin Sprawling, as well as her new committee. Hopefully, they are Log splitting which amazingly had no able to bounce back from what injuries… apart from Charlie Morton’s sore has been a rather difficult year arm operating the hydraulic splitter’s valves for planning with many of the typical Young Farmers events and fundraising opportunities being heavily interrupted by youknow-what! Despite this, we still managed to raise enough to make up some of our usual end of year donations. We have been treated to lots of very exciting and interesting Club nights on Thursdays. The first of which was the annual treasure hunt that proved to be quite difficult this year with it being held in the darkness of an autumnal night, but despite this, the usual chaos was caused and lots of fun had by all. We’ve had two walks; the first being all about agronomy from ProCam - a big thank you to Luke for giving up his Thursday evening and preparing a really interesting talk and quiz, not to mention the added chocolates and freebies! Our second talk was kindly given by Lewis Rabett of Dansie Auctioneers, Colchester, who shared with us a collection of his antiques along with lots of information about Reeman Dansie. It would be unfair to talk about Wix’s Thursday meetings without mentioning everyone’s favourite place, THE PUB! We have been having meetings around the Tendring region at many different locations, getting involved with pumpkin carving and bonfire night celebrations inbetween. But we were able to welcome back the opening of the Haywain (our usual haunt) with a quiz hosted by our very own Tom Novorol! With the rising Christmas hysteria, Wix have been busy getting involved in the festivities with our usual Christmas tree sales and collections, as well as a stall at the Green Keep Festive Fayre selling bags of logs and some seasonal veg donated by local farms.

COUNTY REPORTS
COMPETITIONS JAMIE MARSHALL Hi everyone.
I WANTED TO TRY AND GET A LOT MORE EVENTS PLANNED AS WE SEE OURSELVES GETTING BACK TO SOME FORM OF NORMALITY
I am Jamie and I’m this year’s Competitions Rep. I have been part of Maldon Young Farmers for six years and have stepped up at County to challenge myself in a new role. I wanted to try and get a lot more events planned as we see ourselves getting back to some form of normality. A new idea which we have tried is a once-a-month pub-themed games evening to try and make use of the County building and a way to bring Clubs together. Our first competition was a pool evening which had a great turn out, and well done to Bill Butcher from Colchester for taking
home first place. In November, we will be looking at a darts competition as well as running a fully-licensed bar. Going forward with sports, on November 28th we are bringing back a hockey competition. This hasn’t been done for a number of years so it will be great to see it back in the calendar. December is a busy month for clubs but we are going to squeeze in a 5K charity run (fancy dress, of course!). We have plenty planned for the new year so keep an eye out for things coming up!

First off, let me introduce myself. My name is Ollie and I am a Colchester YFC member and, after a tricky two years as Club Chairman, I’m going to have a go at getting the Countryside up and running again. Looking to the year ahead, we will be having the annual stock judging competition in March and the farm evaluation competition in June. Exact

dates will be given soon. In the meantime, we are working to try and get a fence erecting competition organised. Also, I am currently looking into getting a sheep shearing course and chainsaw training course organised that will be open to members who would like to learn about these areas. More info will follow. That’s all for now,
Ollie

TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT JOSH COOK
Hi everyone.
ONE OF MY ROLES IS TO ASSIST YOUNG FARMERS IN OBTAINING GRANTS
My name is Josh, I am 22 and have been a Maldon Young Farmer for six years. This year, I am the Training & Development Representative for EYF. One of my roles is to assist Young Farmers in obtaining grants. These can cover things like trailer and lorry tests and help with uni expenses, along with forklift, pesticide and
a whole range of other qualifications and essentials, such as first aid courses. With the above in mind, if I can be of any assistance then please contact me and I will also be attending Club meetings in the near future to offer help.

SUBSCRIBERS NATHAN SPRAWLING & LIZZY TRESADERN
Hello everyone! Lizzy and I have taken on the Subscribers role for this year, and whilst we’ve both been rather busy so far (grape harvest for Lizzy, taking on the Treasury role myself), we’ve got plans in the works for the new year. Firstly, Clubs are really struggling for venues for parties. If you, or anyone you know might have something suitable then please get in touch. Going forward, we’re on the lookout for Club archives and records for an evening at County. Let us know if you’ve any old photographs, Club records or similar. I’m also keen to run a County boat trip in the summer next year; I ran one as a Wix event last year and everyone involved had a great day out. I’m sure a few of you remember my e-mails! For next year, and in combination with my Treasury role, we’re looking to move the subscribers’ payments to a direct debit system; hopefully this will simplify the matter for all involved, and we’re investigating if we can make it possible to claim gift aid against this. That’s all for now, but we’ll be in touch soon!

SHOW BEN COVE
With the nights drawing in and harvest a distant memory, that can only mean one thing - that we are getting closer and closer to May 22nd, the Essex Young Farmers Show. Firstly, a huge thank you must be said to Jack Bosworth and his committee for all the work they have done during a dreadful time, and after a two-year break we are determined to make this year’s Show one to remember. We had our AGM back in October with a great turnout of people, who are all excited for a great Show this year. With a mixture of old faces and new ones, we have started work on preparing for the big day and, although it seems a long way away, we have
already got an awful lot of things sorted and momentum is beginning to build. If you are interested in getting involved with the Show, we will be meeting on Wednesday 12th January at 8pm at the Essex Young Farmers County building (Whitbread’s Barn, Chatham Green, CM3 3LQ) for our next meeting and it would be great to see anyone interested there. Look forward to seeing you all on May 22nd!

CHAPLAIN’S CHAPTER
REVD JANET NICHOLLS
So what are your plans for Christmas? Parties? Christmas tree sales? Carol singing? It’s great to hear of the preparations underway for a season of Young Farmers festive fun after last year’s lockdown Christmas. My Christmas plans and preparations are presently making their way onto December’s to-do list. For someone who always aims to keep Christmas simple, the list is already looking far too long. I’m gradually realising the reason for this year’s mammoth list: it’s because each activity has a Plan A, Plan B and Plan C! Whilst many of us long for normality to resume, we’re clearly not yet able to confidently plan for a covid-free Christmas. I’m beginning to face the reality that ‘best laid plans’ continue to be disrupted at short notice. It’s easy to get disappointed when perfect Christmas plans are upset. But Christmas disruptions have a long track-
record; they’ve featured prominently from the beginning. At the heart of Christmas is a young woman whose life plans were disrupted by an unexpected pregnancy. And then her birth plan was disrupted by an unexpected journey to Bethlehem where there wasn’t even a room available for her to give birth. Strangely, the disruptions which must have seemed devastating at the time, marked a very special and momentous event. We call it Christmas! I hope you have a wonderful Christmas (and may your disruptions be good ones!). God bless you.
