James Gannon Good afternoon and a warm welcome back to Edgeley Park especially to Darren Sarll, his staff, players, and the officials of Yeovil Town FC that are able to attend today’s game. It has been a strange three weeks since our win at Rochdale. Just as we had come roaring back from our weak performance against Weymouth with two really strong performances against Chesterfield and Rochdale we were closed down. It is a strange quirk of the cancellations that we now have the unique situation of playing a third FA Cup tie in a row in three different rounds. We welcome the Glovers here today, and I am sure that it will be a very tough game. Forget league form, they have won two out of two in this competition against teams from the National League. Perhaps the luck, or that little bit extra you need to win games, have been in this competition so we must be very wary. A massive prize awaits both teams. As managers and players, the boost of confidence for league form as we both head into very demanding periods of games can be very important. For the club, the finances and potential revenues of winning this round and what waits ahead in the Third Round can provide welcome relief in this very costly season to all. But for all involved, especially the fans forced to watch from home, is the prospect of seeing their team pitted against one of the high profile clubs in the New Year with the growing potential of being able to attend, that brings great excitement. They say the Cup can bring a welcome relief from the everyday demands of the League, but on a wider scale football can bring a great outlet for

all those involved or interested in the game, as it is a massive escape from the world we live in at the moment. I trust that the performance of both teams provides great entertainment for both our fans and the general public that will be watching in the national television platforms today. I hope it brings relief, joy, excitement, and hope in what otherwise has been a difficult period in our normal lives. Enjoy the game. JG

S P O N S O R E D B Y:

COUNTY JUNIORS

Hello again, and we are back to football after three weeks off due to the virus. We hope that the players involved are now over the virus and are ready for this afternoon’s game with Yeovil Town. This is always an exciting round as the winners have a chance of playing one of the big teams in the next round. To get to where we are in the cup, we all thought that we were out against Chesterfield only to have to replay resulting in a 4-0 home win on the Wednesday night which sent us off to Rochdale, in a great performance, and that wonder goal from John Rooney resulting in a 2-1 away win which brings us to today. Myself and Brenda are missing meeting you all in either the Family Lounge or our meetings.

It was great to catch up with some of you who took part a week last Sunday in a Zoom meeting with Jim Gannon. We hope you all enjoyed the morning and we send our thanks to Jim for taking part yet again. We are hoping to arrange another just before Christmas and will let you know details nearer the time. NEW SPONSOR We were delighted to hear that a new sponsorship deal with the Vernon Building Society has resulted in the Junior Supporters’ Club now having Vernon Building Society as our new sponsors.

We look forward to working alongside them to promote our club and to get children interested in Stockport County. This also means of course a certain bear namely Vernon Bear will be along to meet you when we are back at Edgeley Park. After a meeting with the new owners, the juniors will have a revamp over the next 12 months, again more details nearer the time. Ian Butterworth

Welcome...

Yeovil Town Our National League counterparts Yeovil Town visit Edgeley Park for the first time since 2010 for today’s FA Cup Second Round tie.

The suspension of the 2019-20 campaign meant The Glovers’ planned trip earlier this year was chalked off the fixture list, though two recent journeys for County to Somerset have reacquainted the clubs after a long time competing at different levels. A late Adam Thomas goal secured a 1-1 draw in the league in August of last year, nine months on from an FA Cup tie between the two clubs which provided one of the high spots of an incredible season for County (then of the National League North of course) with Jim Gannon’s men claiming a well-deserved 3-1 win in the first round of the famous old competition. At the time Yeovil were in League Two, though they were relegated at the end of the campaign, bringing an end to 16 years in the Football League. In one of the quirks of fate that football seems to specialise in, County’s first goal that day came from our talisman Matty Warburton, who now represents Yeovil Town, having joined on a season-long loan from Northampton Town in October. Warburton opened his account for his new club in a recent 1-1 draw at Woking, though that’s one of just five points The Glovers have claimed thus far this season, with five draws and four defeats their record after nine games. It’s all a far cry from last season’s strong start, which saw Town occupy a play-off

08

place after four of the first nine games. That early promise was honed by manager Darren Sarll and his charges, as they developed into a consistently difficult opponent throughout the season, finding themselves in fourth place when the season abruptly concluded.

The Glovers have a rich history in the FA Cup, having defeated many Football League clubs during their time as a non-league outfit. The most notable of these came in 1949 when Yeovil, then of the Southern League, beat First Division side Sunderland, who boasted the most expensive player in English football at the time. A club record crowd of 17,123 witnessed that triumph and similar excitement swept Somerset in 2015 and 2018 when Town hosted Manchester United in the third round and fourth round respectively.

DID YOU KN

OW? Just like Coun ty, Yeovil take their nicknam e from an indus try with which the town was once synonymous. During the 18 th an d 19th centuries there were more tha n 30 glove factories in the area, so when Yeovil formed in 1895 ‘The Glo vers’ was an obvious and very fitting nickname.

Their play-off adventure was to come to an equally abrupt end mind you, losing 2-0 to Barnet to fall at the first hurdle. Perhaps something of a play-off hangover is being experienced then, for on paper Town have plenty of quality in their ranks, especially up front with Rhys Murphy and Courtney Duffus sharing 30 goals between them last season. Republic of Ireland under-21 international Joe Quigley is a more recent recruit, having joined in October. He was on the mark last time out, against Hartlepool United. It would seem that fine margins are affecting The Glovers at the moment, with only one of their four defeats being by more than one goal. Perhaps then the FA Cup might provide perfect respite from league woes. It certainly did in round one, when Town claimed a 1-0 win at Bromley thanks to a first-ever professional goal for academy graduate Gabby Rogers in the last minute of extra-time.

On both occasions United fielded strong line-ups, with the locals getting to see the likes of Wayne Rooney, Angel Di Maria, Romelu Lukaku, Alexis Sanchez and David De Gea on the Huish Park turf. It highlights the calibre of opponent that may await in round three, with the potential for lifelong memories to be made for players and fans alike. Before then, however, all attention will be on impressing in front of the BBC Sport cameras and securing that spot in the next round, with a prize pot of £25,500 also available to today’s winners.

County Heaven Hatter in Macc writes: Afternoon, everyone - and (at least so far as we Hatters are concerned) welcome back to some football!

Sandbach Hatter writes: Vil-lainous?! Huish you. I can’t believe after such a prolonged absence from our article, the Glovers are off already!

County’s COVID-enforced hiatus of almost three weeks will mean that we are to end November without seeing any National League action during the month - but, conversely (and rather perversely, too, for a fixtures sequence), having completed three successive fixtures in the FA Cup, following our replayed tie in SK3 against Chesterfield and subsequent, fine victory at Rochdale.

In the absence of any ‘live’ footballing action over the past few weeks (as if COVID hadn’t done enough damage this year already), County Heaven has continued to keep its members thoroughly entertained by way of our world-famous* Games Room.

It is also almost two years since we last took to the field on a Sunday - coincidentally, at precisely the same stage of the competition and, as is the case today, for an early afternoon kick-off brought forward to tie in with live BBC coverage. Hopefully, County will go one better than at Barnet in 2018, when a single early goal denied us a place in the hat for the Third Round draw. In what might be dubbed the accessorymanufacturers derby, the Hatters have had the better of the Glovers when it comes to the world’s oldest and most famous national domestic football tournament. We overcame them at Huish Park to set ourselves up for that trip to Barnet a couple of seasons ago - and, a decade before then, netted five times without conceding in an Edgeley Park replay, after honours had finished even in Somerset. Needless to say, that record will count for little this afternoon - especially with ties currently needing to be settled on the day. And no doubt, too, our visitors’ fondly-remembered former Hatter, Mr Warburton, will, on his return to EP, be intent on proving that - at Yeovil, as so often at County back in the day - he can claim to be the best thing since sliced bread. Welcome back, Matty - and best of luck… from tomorrow!

At the time of going to press, Hermann and Mini-Herm (which happens to be his son, before you jump to any sordid conclusions) are enjoying life at the top of Ceefer’s County Prediction League, while in the original competition, fronted by Macc and Archie, it’s Epworth who is currently topping the table by a single point. Elsewhere, the three most recent Limerick competitions were won by Countyfan, Ceefer and Epworth (again), for their winning lines relating to the matches against Chesterfield (replay), Rochdale (FA Cup) and ‘Postponed due to COVID’! Well done, gents. Finally, my latest quiz concluded last week, with Archie just pipping Macc to the title by way of one superior bonus point. See if you can work out the TWO links between these five former Hatters: Ian Ironside, Fraser Forster, Harry Hardy, Neil Edwards and Conrad Logan. One of the links is admittedly obvious, but do you have any INITIAL thoughts for the more complicated second link?! Then, pop along to County Heaven to see if you guessed correctly. With that, erm, wrap up warm (or just bung the heating on), and enjoy the game! *Well, it is ever since Dudley Hatter moved to Spain. Animo et Fide.

But so much for our visitors. Time now to hand over to my Vil-lainous partner in writing crime. Yeo, Sandy!

Imagine Radio Chris Ridgway

Good afternoon everyone, another day in the most upside down of times and one that my first message is one of hope, that everyone is coping with these times and keeping safe and well. With another lockdown to have gone through and then a tier system on top of that to get used to, the football being back has never been more welcome than now. Granted it’s not as we know and love it, in a bustling stadium with the atmosphere that only Edgeley Park can generate, but it is still back and that is something to cherish. Over the lockdown, and the course of the year since the beginning of the outbreak, I’ve seen how important not just my own love and passion for this club is, but how it plays a pivotal role in the community we so desperately need in these times. At the start of lockdown, both Martin and myself made a commitment to keep the show on the road. Manager interviews, player specials, Legend Series and now quizzes, they’ve all been fun, we’ve had some great laughs and great feedback, but also great realisations.

itself with their new owners, and the content ideas we’ve been able to create - and more recently the Stockport Express picking up our digital content - my understanding of what Stockport County is has reinforced why I love this club and why it is so important to so many. Clips over the summer of Alun Armstrong talking about Peter Ward putting him up when he moved, Andy Preece reliving those days with Big Kev - Kev himself talking about partying with fans and being stopped and asked about the club everywhere he goes. Ash Williams getting into Gareth Bale about not doing nine in a row, Dicko trying to cheat Michael Raynes on the quiz, these players tied to the same football family tree have really kept us going through a pandemic that has been so hard to live through at times.

All of the above has occupied my headspace throughout this pandemic, and reaffirmed that Stockport County is something we can’t ever take for granted. So I’ll turn to today’s game. It’s our turn I’m sure, for the so-called ‘magic of the cup’ this year. What happened with the Chesterfield situation just doesn’t happen without a bit of magic. Goals like the one at Rochdale definitely don’t ‘just happen’, and it would happen to be Yeovil that we get in the draw - the same team that we played in the FA Cup while the latest stories of legend were being born. I’ve missed football. I’ve missed feeling like this, watching Match of the Day is ok, but it doesn’t get me feeling like this, and I know I’m not the only one who feels like that.

Hearing how those special memories of myself and thousands of others were experienced by those in them, speaking with my footballing heroes and seeing that they too are people with lives, jobs and how Covid has affected them. The opportunity to continue working throughout with Imagine Radio, in particular JK, the club

I then move to what the club are doing for the community. The way Mark Stott has campaigned, donated and helped bring the spotlight to the causes that need it is nothing short of heroic. The way the County family have responded and got behind the cause epitomises what can be achieved when people pull in the same direction.

It’s our turn for the ‘magic of the cup’ this year

Let’s enjoy the game, continue to look out for one another and look forward to those doors opening back up. Because they will. Chris Ridgway

Terrace Talk It’s FA Cup second round weekend at Edgeley Park and the draw has paired County up against fellow National League side Yeovil Town, with the prize on offer being a potential match against one of the country’s big hitters. Darren Sarll brings his side up from Somerset in a mixed vein of form, with his side drawing quite a few so far since the season began, including a 3-3 draw in this competition against Dover Athletic back in October which they eventually won on penalties to qualify for the first round proper. This will be the first season ever whereby replays will not be used to determine the outcome of a tie and as both of today’s teams have seen already the lottery of the penalty shoot-out can be a goalkeeping glove or a post away from making the next round. The euphoria of beating Rochdale at Spotland in the first round and John Rooney’s worldie of a goal was a great experience for the squad when you consider that Dale are two divisions

higher, but that is all consigned to the history books now and Yeovil will be an equally stern test, especially as they had been gunning for promotion back into the Football League just a matter of months ago.

Bristol City within the past month and it’s an agreement that will give Jim Gannon options in the final third of the park and give Louis himself some vital playing time which will prove invaluable on his return to Ashton Gate.

It’s a shame there will be no replays as it breaks with tradition, yet it is probably only relevant for either of today’s sides if the prize on offer is a trip to Old Trafford, Anfield, The Etihad Stadium, Stamford Bridge and the like.

Another player on loan at today’s opponents Yeovil is a player whom we know very well here at Edgeley Park. Matty Warburton has been on loan with the Glovers since October and whilst it is good to see Matty again, we hope that his return to Stockport is a quiet one.

That’s not to disrespect Huish Park by any means, but as County will be pencilled in to go there for the last game of the season, the Somerset weather is most certainly much better in mid-May than the cold of late-November.

Unfortunately, and very much a sign of the times, the COVID outbreak has put paid to a few County matches in recent weeks, we wish all those affected all the very best in their recovery. Hopefully the side can pick up where they left off upon resuming, starting with today’s game.
