Good afternoon and welcome to our game against Mansfield. You will have seen details of the long awaited rescue package for EFL clubs from the Premier League. This for League 1 and League 2 clubs is in two parts. The first part comprising £30 million is a grant to in part alleviate the loss of revenue arising from no gate receipts to date and thereafter reduced gate receipts when crowds can return. Each League 1 club will receive £375,000 and League 2 £250,000. That totals £15 million. The other £15 million will be distributed on the basis of actual losses at each club on a formula at present being worked on by the EFL. We should know by the end of December the results of the work the EFL is doing and what our share will be. The second part relates to £20 million Monitored Grant. Clubs can apply for a share of this on need and clubs will need to demonstrate financial distress and requirement of funding to enable them to complete the 2020/21 season. This was discussed at length in a meeting of League 2 clubs with the EFL on Thursday. The unanimous view was that we are not happy with this proposal as it could benefit clubs who were in financial distress at the start of the lockdown at the expense of clubs who had managed their affairs properly. The EFL made it clear that the Premier League were not prepared to alter their stance and allow the full £50 million to be used for replacement of lost income. It was therefore agreed by all League 2 clubs that the Monitored Grant should be a loan and any club who took advantage of it would have to repay it in successive seasons.
SO FAR AS WE ARE CONCERNED THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT THE MONEY TO BE RECEIVED FROM THE FIRST PART OF THE GRANT WILL GO SOME WAY TO REPLACE PART OF THE LOST INCOME
There is still the debate whether the Premier League alone should have to support the EFL clubs. This is in contrast to the Government providing £1.5 billion to the arts and £50 million to the National League. That debate will continue. So far as we are concerned the good news is that the money to be received from the first part of the grant will go some way to replace part of the lost income but sadly not all of it. UTMM Philip

REPORT IT.
KICK IT OUT OF FOOTBALL.
IAN HOLLOWAY THE GAFFER:
Good afternoon everyone reading these notes ahead of the Mansfield game. I’m expecting another tough game today against The Stags who have been much improved since Nigel Clough took the job. I was bitterly disappointed to lose to Newport on Tuesday night but I actually thought our performance was very good, apart from at the top end of the pitch again. When things aren’t going your way, you have to keep going and I felt that every one of my lads did that. Newport made a few changes to their team and I thought we kept them very quiet for the majority of the game. However, they scored two and we didn’t score any. We managed to create chances but we didn’t take them which is a tad frustrating to say the least. I was gutted to concede a free kick and a penalty especially when the free kick flicks off the wall and goes in the opposite corner to where the goalkeeper is going. That galls me a bit! We played some really good stuff at times but there’s no denying we’re lacking a bit in the area where it counts the most. Without all these injuries we’ve had to contend with, I think we might have got a couple of goals and then it would have been a totally different game. Unfortunately, though, with the injuries to James Hanson, Greeny, Sean Scannell, Tilley and Max, we’re a bit down to the barebones in that department, if I’m being honest. Losing in midweek was extra disappointing because we’ve got a really tough run coming up and we need to get some confidence from somewhere. Although that’s not easy when you’re losing games. I can see how much potential this team has but that lack of experience has stopped us from building some momentum, so I need to do all that I can to help them through this period. However, I can’t wait for the lads to get back out on Blundell Park this afternoon. We’ve had two days to look back at what went wrong on Tuesday, work on things as a group on the training pitch and I was encouraged by some of the things I saw in our last game. I hope you enjoy the game. Ollie

MACCA CAPTAIN’S COLUMN:
Afternoon everyone. Hope you’re all well and hopefully this is the last time I write these notes before at least some of you are back in Blundell Park where you belong. Obviously Tuesday night was a disappointing result against a side I think will go very close to promotion and one that has been building together for a while. However, we weren’t a million miles away from them and hopefully we can start to turn some of those performances of promise into results because ultimately that’s all that matters!
WE WEREN’T A MILLION MILES AWAY FROM THEM AND HOPEFULLY WE CAN START TO TURN SOME OF THOSE PERFORMANCES OF PROMISE INTO RESULTS BECAUSE ULTIMATELY THAT’S ALL THAT MATTERS!
On a side note, it’s our Xmas dinner this week at the training ground… although it might be a little different this year in terms of numbers allowed due to covid! I’d just like to say a special thank you to Di - she’s kept me well fed and watered for nearly 10 years and really is such a huge part of this football club. So thanks Di and good luck cooking dinner for all of us by yourself! UTM! Macca

HARRY CLIFTON
IN THE SPOTLIGHT A
ll-action midfielder Harry Clifton made his 100th appearance for The Mariners against Newport on Tuesday
night.
The Grimsby lad has become the first academy graduate to reach triple figures for the club since Bradley Wood in 2012. Clifton joined the School of Excellence in 2007 and was awarded his first professional contract when he turned 17 after impressing the then Town boss Paul Hurst. Clifton signed for Grantham Town on loan in 2016-17 and went on to make 47 appearances for the Northern Premier League side - scoring six times for The Gingerbreads. He returned to Blundell Park for the 2017-18 season and, at the beginning of 2018, with Town battling against relegation, the midfielder was handed his full debut by Russell Slade. He went on to feature 13 times that season as The Mariners beat the drop under Michael Jolley. Clifton signed a three-year-deal with the club in the summer of 2018 and made 43 appearances in 2018-19 - scoring against Tranmere, Chesterfield and Notts County. Last season, he played 29 times for Town, featuring all over midfield and even at wing back on occasions. The former academy graduate was called-up to the Wales U21 squad by Rob Page in March last year and so far he’s earned six caps for the Young Dragons.
GTFC CAREER:
This campaign, Clifton’s versatility has been used to good effect by Ian Holloway, and the 22-year-old was deployed at left back on Tuesday night to bring up his century.

elcome to today’s game against Mansfield who like us are not doing as well as they would like so far but have shown signs of improvement and as ever this will be another tough game for the lads. Let’s hope we get a bit of help from lady luck, it would be nice to have a deflection in our favour for a change.
MARINERS TRUST
This time next week could see the return of fans back to Blundell Park for the first time since March. This week the club had a meeting with the Safety Advisory Group, and we were also represented through the SLO, Kristine Green. At the meeting the plans for the return of fans should we return to Tier 2 were approved although with a key alteration. Under Tier 2 the rules for mixing mean that only people from the same household or support bubble can mix as opposed to the original plan pre Tiers which allowed two households. This will mean a number of Season Ticket holders will have to move seat again in order to conform. Nevertheless, there will still be enough space to accommodate all ST holders and so fingers crossed for some good news when the Tiers are reviewed next Wednesday. As mentioned in our notes for the Newport game, we have some good news for Junior Supporters. For some time now we have been discussing with the club the need for an official Junior Supporters Club and we are now delighted to confirm that this is going to happen, and the “Junior Mariners” will be launched very soon. This will build on the work with our own junior members but will be expanded and incorporated into this new scheme. In a normal season the cost will be £5 for junior season ticket holders and £10 for non-season ticket holders but for this season it will be free and £5 accordingly. The benefits will be as follows: • • • •
• • • • • • • • • • •
Free gift pack Birthday Card Free Christmas Party* Free monthly draw to receive video message from favourite player Free draw twice per season for mascot place* Free draw twice per season for away mascot place* Vote for player of year and chance to present the trophy Chance to play on the pitch at half time* Chance to be ball presenter* Chance to be flag bearer* Chance to take part in “Junior takeover” once per season* Exclusive half term events* 10% discount off GTFC SET football courses* E Certificate signed by the manager Free junior membership of Mariners Trust and vice versa
THERE WILL STILL BE ENOUGH SPACE TO ACCOMMODATE ALL ST HOLDERS AND SO FINGERS CROSSED FOR SOME GOOD NEWS WHEN THE TIERS ARE REVIEWED
*Once Covid restrictions allow Getting young fans hooked on the club is vital and we feel this is a great step forward. Watch out for launch details very shortly. Enjoy the game. UTM The Mariners Trust Board

Classy midfielder George Lapslie has been in fine form for The Stags of late, scoring four times in the last eight games. The 23-year-old is currently on loan until the end of the season from League One Charlton Athletic. The blonde-haired midfielder joined the Addicks in 2009 and quickly progressed through the youth ranks at the club. In 2017, he scored on his professional debut for Charlton in an EFL Trophy tie against Crawley Town. Since then, Lapslie has gone on to make over 50 appearances for his parent club, most of which coming in the Championship and League One. At the end of the 2018/19 campaign, the promising midfielder won Charlton’s Young Player of the Year award. Lapslie grabbed one of the goals in Mansfield’s 3-3 draw with Crawley Town at the weekend.
Experienced frontman Nicky Maynard netted 15 goals for The Stags last term, finishing second in the Sky Bet League Two top scorer charts. However, the 33-year-old is yet to recreate last season’s goalscoring form. Beginning his career at Crewe Alexandra, Maynard netted 35 goals in 67 matches for the Gresty Road club, before being transferred to Bristol City in July 2008 in a £2.25m deal. He scored 46 goals in 131 appearances for The Robins and then joined West Ham United for £1.65m in January 2012. Maynard found the net four times for the Hammers and was later signed by Cardiff City for £2.5m. Spells then followed at Wigan Athletic, MK Dons and Aberdeen before joining Bury, where he scored 22 as The Shakers won promotion to League One in 2018/19.
Andy Cook is a striker who’ll need little introduction to Mariners fans. The powerful frontman spent two seasons at Blundell Park between 2012-14 and topped the club’s goalscoring charts with 16 goals during the 2012-13 campaign. Released by Town, Cook scored 47 in 92 games for Barrow before joining Tranmere Rovers and scoring 51 in 97 games as Rovers won promotion back to the Football League. The 30-year-old striker spent a season with Walsall in League One (where he top scored with 18 goals) and ahead of the 2019/20 campaign he signed for The Stags for an undisclosed fee. Last season, the big striker managed seven goals in 33 appearances and so far this term he’s found the back of the net three times - including one in their last outing.

MANSFIELD 0-0 TOWN 26TH APRIL 1980
It’s not many matches between clubs where a 0-0 draw would be described as the best ever, but that’s what this game truly was! Not on the field of play I must stress. Town needed just one point for promotion, and they intended to get it. Mansfield needed as many points as possible to avoid relegation. George Kerr ordered the people of Grimsby to the battlefield and they came in their droves. There was a bit of a Kirky panic, as our car was indisposed, but the garage owner loaned us a battered and bruised pick-up which against all the odds got us to Field Mill. The Mariners Army sang and cheered and willed the team to get the most precious point of all, so when the final whistle blew and Town were promoted for the second successive season, the joy and relief were unleashed!
OF THE BEST
vs MANSFIELD TOWN By John Kirk
TOWN 7-2 MANSFIELD NEW YEARS DAY 2011
Town’s first year in the Conference, and a middling sort of season, but the stand out games were this match, and the one two days later! Town celebrated the New Year in style with seven goals against the Stags, Bore and Coulson put us two up in the first half, but Mansfield pulled one back on the stroke of half time. Within a dozen minutes of the restart Town were 4-1 to the good (Bore again, and Alan Connell) and were pegged back again by Mansfield. In the last 20 minutes, Kempson, and Connell added the fifth and sixth before Peter Bore completed his hat-trick in the final minute. Two days later, Town travelled to Histon and stuck another 6 away!
TOWN 1-0 MANSFIELD & MANSFIELD 1-2 TOWN 15TH DECEMBER 2007 & 22ND MARCH 2008
I have put these two games in, more for the way the season panned out not just for Town and Mansfield, but for other clubs too. Town clearly won both games by one goal, and the last of those two games was the fifteenth win in 24 games in league and cup. Of the other nine games, five were draws! Town had eight games to go, including the Johnson’s Paints Trophy Final against MK Dons. Mansfield ended in last but one spot and were relegated to non-league. But a read down of the final league table, from 12th to 24th makes some “interesting” reading. You’ll know where they are now and where they’ve been – so here goes from 12th down to 24th – Barnet, Bury, Brentford, Lincoln, Grimsby, Accrington Stanley, Shrewsbury, Macclesfield, Dagenham, Notts Co, Chester, Mansfield, Wrexham. Scary, eh?
MANSFIELD 0-1 TOWN 4TH JANUARY 2020
Town had to travel to Mansfield, having beaten Salford by the only goal of the game in what was Ollie’s first match in charge. His second – the Mansfield game, saw the same scoreline with Mal Benning scoring an own goal, to ease our worries somewhat!
Let’s go for “Seven of the Best” - it’s your Christmas bonus!
TOWN 1-1 MANSFIELD & MANSFIELD 2-2 TOWN 8TH SEPTEMBER 1951 & 5TH JANUARY 1952
The 1951-52 season set some terrific records, including Town’s longest winning streak. If only we’d have beaten Mansfield instead of drawing with them… we’d still have ended up one point behind Lincoln City, and therefore not promoted! Bill Shankly must have been pulling his hair out… such as he had! Of the promotion destroying nine league defeats, six of those opponents aren’t in the league any more, and one has only returned this season! Grimsby reaper?... eat your hearts out!

MARINERS MEMORIES:
PROMOTED AT MANSFIELD Rob McIlveen, author of the ‘1979/80 Champions’ book that tells the story of the title-winning 79/80 season, writes about the day the Mariners secured promotion at Field Mill.
Forty years ago on April 26th 1980, Grimsby Town played Mansfield Town in a crucial Third Division game. The Mariners had beaten Oxford United the previous Saturday to leave themselves needing three points from four to secure promotion. However, during midweek, promotion rivals Chesterfield were surprisingly beaten at Chester, which meant that the Mariners would be promoted if they could secure just a point at relegation-threatened Mansfield.
Throughout the season, Kerr had urged the fans to get behind his team. In his last rallying call to the travelling supporters, the manager said: ‘Their fans will respond to the game, so it will be up to us to take the place over as we did at Chesterfield, Sheffield United, and Barnsley. With a joint effort - team and supporters together - we can do it.’ The Town fans certainly travelled in their numbers, and most of those at Field Mill were Grimsby rather than Mansfield supporters.
George Kerr, Town’s charismatic manager, wanted more: ‘We are looking to win. I hope and expect the people of Grimsby to support us in numbers. We want the title and the best way to get the three points we need for that would be to beat Mansfield to allow us the breathing space in our final game against Sheffield United. If we have to do it by drawing with Mansfield and beating Sheffield United, then we will.’
The home team were staring relegation in the face. They needed at least three points from their remaining two games to stand any chance of survival. Although the Mariners’ fans were confident of a win, Kerr was taking nothing for granted: ‘I feel it will be our hardest game of the season. It’s a very difficult situation for Mansfield. They must win and we must make sure it does not backfire on us.’

Grimsby had more possession in the first half, but Mansfield were marginally the better side. Their best chance came when Bobby Mitchell was caught in possession as Town went forward. Steve Taylor and Brian Pollard exchanged passes before the latter’s shot went inches over the crossbar. The Mariners were nearly gifted a goal when Adrian Burrows’ back header surprised Mansfield’s ‘keeper who managed to gather the ball just ahead of Tony Ford, but neither side did much else to break the deadlock. At half time, the Mariners were forty-five minutes from promotion.
AFTER LEAVING THE FIELD MILL PITCH, THE PLAYERS RETURNED FROM THE CHANGING ROOMS FOR A WELL-DESERVED LAP OF HONOUR IN FRONT OF AROUND FIVE THOUSAND OVERJOYED FANS
lap of honour in front of around five thousand overjoyed fans.
Chesterfield’s defeat at Millwall meant that Grimsby could finish no lower than runners-up in the league. As most people know, they went one better than. On the final Saturday of the season the Mariners beat Sheffield United 4-0 at Blundell Park to win the championship in front of nearly 20,000 people. For Mansfield, the draw effectively condemned them to relegation as the two sides immediately above them both won.
There were few opportunities for either side in the second half. Following a foul on Ford, Joe Waters and Mike Brolly repeated their free-kick routine from which Brolly had scored at Barnsley, and it nearly worked again. Dean Crombie also went close with one of his trade-mark free kicks. However, Town’s best effort was John Stone’s well-hit cross-shot which only narrowly missed Mansfield’s goal. The home team had their chances to break the deadlock towards the end of the game, but an excellent display of goalkeeping from Nigel Batch ensured the Mariners kept the clean sheet they needed. It had not been the most entertaining of games, but no one cared - Town had the point they needed to go up! After promotion from Division Four in 1978-79, the Mariners were promoted for the second consecutive season, a feat no Grimsby team had ever achieved. For the first time since 1964, the Mariners were back in the Second Division. After leaving the Field Mill pitch, the players returned from the changing rooms for a well-deserved

CONNECTIONS:
MARK LEVER Big, old-fashioned defender Mark Lever enjoyed 12 great years at Blundell Park, but he also spent a season with The Stags towards the end of his career. The Beverley-born defender signed YT forms with The Mariners in 1986 after turning down the opportunity to sign for Hull City. At 17-years-old, Lever was promoted to the first team by Alan Buckley during the 88-89 season and went on to form a solid partnership with Andy Tilson at centre back. Over the next two seasons, Lever was an integral part of the Town side that won back-to-back promotions in 89-90 and 90-91; taking the club from the doldrums of Division Four, to Division Two. The commanding centre back, who was affectionately nicknamed ‘The Plug’ due to his inclination to head, kick or block anything that came his way, was a regular fixture in defence during Town’s six seasons in the second tier in the 90s - partnering Futcher, Handyside, Rodger and Smith at the back. Lever remained with The Mariners after relegation in 1996-97 and his loyalty was rewarded by playing an unassuming, yet pivotal role in the club’s doublewinning campaign of 1997-98. His gritty and determined performance in the play off victory over Northampton Town (which earned him the Man of The Match award) epitomised Lever’s fine season. After a decade at Blundell Park, Lever was granted a testimonial against Nottingham Forest in October 1998 and in 99-00 he was named Player of The Year for the first time in his career. However, the award was to be his swansong with The Mariners, with the big stopper choosing to sign for Bristol City. Unfortunately, injury blighted his time at Ashton Gate and after just two seasons (and 37 appearances) he was given a free transfer. This led to Lever signing for Mansfield Town, who’d just won promotion to the Second Division. The defender featured 15 times for Stuart Watkiss’ side (which included a very young Craig Disley) but was released at the end of the campaign after relegation was confirmed. Lever played on for two more years in non league for Ilkeston Town before hanging up his boots in 2005 aged 35. In total, he appeared 422 times for The Mariners during his 12 years, making him equal 14th in the alltime list of appearances for the club.

t’s hard to remember a more gruelling set of fixtures – and it’s really going to test squads to the limit in the coming weeks.
With a Covid-delayed start to contend with, it was clear right from the beginning of the league season in mid-September that we were in for a campaign like no other. To get a 46-game league progamme completed by early May will take some doing, especially with cup competitions thrown in on top. This month is one of the big ones. In the Championship, for example, there are eight rounds of games. You’re playing a third of the division in one sole month!
ALEX REVELL Stevenage manager Alex Revell was left lamenting ‘tired minds’ after his side’s goalless draw against fellow strugglers Southend.
It’s a relentless spell of Saturday-Tuesday-Saturday fixtures and may well sort the men from the boys. Some people may not like the new five substitutes rule that was brought in recently, but it could be a saving grace for many clubs.
“You try and pick the players up, but it’s been a tough week in terms of minutes,” he said. “The players need to recover their legs and have a nice week of training before the next run of games.”
And it really could be a case this term of clubs needing to use their whole squads. As they like to say in current parlance, everyone is going to get their fair share of ‘minutes’. That could be beneficial for young players as they may get more opportunities than they otherwise would in a ‘normal’ season.
Gillingham’s colourful boss Steve Evans was left feeling like Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp ahead of his side’s 2-0 home win against Swindon. “I was concerned at the start of the game as we felt like a European side,” said the former Leeds manager. “We played on Wednesday night, the coach got back from Bristol Rovers at 3am and then we played again with an early kick-off.
Sometimes being thrown in at the deep end can be a good thing, so let’s hope the starlets prove they can swim.
“I felt like how Jurgen felt when Liverpool had to go to Brighton the other week!”
If recent signs are anything to go by, opportunities are going to come sooner rather than later. You only had to pick up a copy of last Sunday’s Football League Paper to get that message.
The turn-around time is limited between games and that’s something new Shrewsbury boss Steve Cotterill told The FLP last week.
AFC Wimbledon boss Glyn Hodges gave a typically honest assessment after his side’s 4-2 home defeat against Bristol Rovers in League One.
“With the amount of games we’ve got, there will be very little coaching done before next season,” he explained.
“They were right at it and we weren’t,” he admitted. “We were off it physically. Maybe the workload of the past few weeks caught up with us and that’s understandable.”
It’s play, rest and recover, and then play again… and again… and again. And if we get a bad winter with a load of postponements, the games may yet come even thicker and faster!
