IN CHARGE:

WAYNE BROWN

GOOD AFTERNOON AND I HOPE YOU ARE ALL LOOKING FORWARD TO WATCHING THE GAME, IN WHAT IS ANOTHER MEMORABLE DAY IN THE CLUBS HISTORY. I WOULD LIKE TO EXTEND A WARM WELCOME TO DEREK AND HIS MORECAMBE TEAM, ALONG WITH TODAY’S MATCH OFFICIALS. We come into today’s game, off of the back of another cup scalp to ensure we begin November unbeaten. Last week’s contest against Kingstonian was a tough one, however we knew it would be as they are a technically gifted side, but I don’t feel we performed at our best for spells in the game, especially at the start of the first half and the second half. That being said, I thought the boys dug in well, kept going and worked hard to solve the problems that Kingstonian were causing us. I felt once we got to grips with the game, we restricted them to very few chances in what was a tight affair. The lads held their own for the majority of the game and goals change games – Hamza was rewarded for his hard-work and forced the goalkeeper in to a mistake. The red card did not change the game and I knew they would continue to come at us in attack to get themselves back in to the game. Ben McNamara made a great save in the last few moments in the game to ensure we progressed to the next round of the FA Trophy – he has been brilliant for us throughout the last few seasons, including this season and sometimes, he does not get the plaudits he deserves. The draw for the next round will see us return to Enfield Town who beat us in the same competition last year in what was a great game, of which we were unlucky to lose. Whenever the game takes

place, I am sure it will be different to last year as we have a different side and they have made some personnel changes too. On to today’s fixture against League Two, Morecambe and we will be treating it as we have every other game this season. It is important that we try to nullify the threat that Morecambe will present, but if we want to be successful and enjoy the game, we will need to stick to our philosophies. We really need to concentrate on what has brought us success so far this season. The game can’t be a defensive exercise, otherwise the boys will not enjoy the match. We need to do what we do best and I am sure the lads who remain from last year’s squad will pull upon last year’s experiences to give them plenty of belief for today. As we all know, the game is being played behind closed doors and we are disappointed that our supporters can’t be with us to watch the match, but we are privileged that the game is been screened live on digital platforms. So please, sit back and enjoy the game from the comfort of your homes and fingers crossed, we can reach the second round of the competition for the second successive season. Enjoy the game, Wayne

“I AM SURE THE LADS WHO REMAIN FROM LAST YEAR’S SQUAD WILL PULL UPON LAST YEAR’S EXPERIENCES TO GIVE THEM PLENTY OF BELIEF FOR TODAY”

MALDON & TIPTREE KINGSTONIAN

SATURDAY 31ST OCTOBER | BUILDBASE FA TROPHY THIRD ROUND QUALIFYING | ATT: 256 Maldon & Tiptree gave Kingstonian a Halloween to forget as they dumped them out of the FA Trophy. Manager Wayne Brown named exactly the same starting eleven that triumphed over Tilbury on the Tuesday night, whilst Kojo Awotwi returned to the Jammers squad following his return to the club and started on the bench. After already dispatching two teams from higher divisions this season in Braintree Town and Haringey Borough respectively, Brown’s men appeared in the mood to produce another upset from the start on an extremely damp surface. The Jammers dominated possession in the early exchanges and looked to regain possession as quickly as possible. Hamza Kaid almost opened the scoring for the home side, however his inventive flick was cleared off the line by a visiting defender. With seventeen minutes on the clock the Jammers were rewarded for their positive start. Midfielder Sam Cornish whipped in a delightful cross from out wide on the left-hand side of the pitch where in-form striker Shomari Barnwell was able to expertly hold off his defender, before planting a header back across goal and into the back of the net.

Unfortunately, Alfie Mason had to be replaced after just twenty minutes due to an injury and was replaced by Rhamar Garrett-Douglas.

The visitors almost responded immediately, however an impressive block from the ever-reliable Martyn Stokes ensured his side kept their lead in tact.

Twelve minutes after his first goal, Barnwell produced an even better to score his second of the match. As Garrett-Douglas broke down the right hand side of the

field, the visiting defense could not prevent his superb cross from reaching the forward who unleashed a powerful header into the corner of the net. Kingstonian were shell-shocked as they struggled to maintain possession of the ball. With just thirty minutes on the clock, visiting manager Hayden Bird made a rare first half double substitution in what was a clear effort to rejuvenate his side who found themselves two goals behind. After a dominant first half, you could have argued that the Jammers should have been further ahead at the break, however Brown’s boys settled for a two-goal advantage and knew that the next goal in the contest was likely to be crucial. With the words of manager Bird ringing in their ears, the visitors began the second half in a completely different fashion to how they performedbefore the break. The opening exchanges of the half resulted in the Jammers penned into their own half and under intense pressure. However, the K’s struggled to create a clear goalscoring opportunity for the first ten minutes as the home defence continued to remain solid. That said, with sixty minutes on the clock, the away side reduced the deficit to just the one goal as substitute Corie Andrews smashed home from close range, after goalkeeper Ben McNamara had made a smart diving save. With the Jammers remaining under pressure, Brown introduced Awotwi for his second debut, as he replaced Aaron Williams-Bushell. Just like they have done on numerous occasions this season, the Jammers seemed to be stepping up to the task though, as they began to regain possession again and resumed creating chances. A smart flick from Scott Kemp required saving by Tolfrey, before Barnwell had a chance for his hat-trick but could only bend his effort straight into the arms of the grateful goalkeeper. With just nineteen minutes remaining, the home side restored their two-goal lead and had the tenacious Kaid to thank. A sloppy back-pass to Tolfrey caught the attention of Kaid who immediately pressured the K’s shot-stopper into a criminal mistake. Winning the ball back with relative ease, Kaid then fired the ball home into an empty next for his second goal of the season - a well-deserved one at that! Three minutes after he extended his side’s lead, Kaid was on the receiving end of a dangerous tackle

HAMZA KAID’S FIRST GOAL OF THE SEASON SEALED THE WIN from Kingstonian’s Simon Cooper who was, without hesitation, handed a red card by the referee. A man down and trailing by two goals, the visitors had it all to do. With less than ten minutes remaining on the clock, Maldon almost had a fourth but saw Scott Kemp’s effort rebound off the woodwork to ensure the K’s still had a glimmer of hope. That hope intensified late on as Andrews broke through the Maldon defence, dribbling around McNamara with great composure and rolling the ball in for his second goal of the afternoon. The visitors had three minutes to find an equaliser to force a penalty shoot-out. With four minutes of additional time allocated, Kingstonian knew they probably only had one more chance to level the game. That chance did arrive and it fell to the dangerous Elliot Buchanan, however, his effort was expertly saved by the foot of McNamara to ensure the Jammers produced another upset and progressed to the Buildbase FA Trophy First Round.

MARTYN STOKES STOKESY, WE HAVE HAD AN IMPRESSIVE START TO THE SEASON AND WE ARE UNBEATEN AS WE BEGIN NOVEMBER. WHAT DO YOU MAKE OF OUR POSITIVE START TO THE SEASON? Having played 12 games this year and still being unbeaten is a great start and you can see the confidence in the group growing with every result. Being such a new group of players, I think we have only got three, maybe four from last year but Lance is still out injured, has made the start to the season even more impressive. I’m excited for the rest of the season and to see if we can carry on the run for as long as possible. YOU WERE NOT INVOLVED IN LASTS SEASONS FA CUP RUN, BUT DO YOU THINK THE LADS WHO REMAIN IN THE SIDE WILL BE A BIG HELP IN TERMS OF RELYING ON LAST YEARS EXPERIENCE? In terms of players, I think it’s just Ben, Billy and Sam who were involved in the cup run last year, but even that experience is invaluable to the team. Making sure everyone remains grounded and focused for every game has been key and will continue to be fundamental. More importantly, the management teams experience and knowledge has guided us through to this stage and makes us feel like we can win every game. IT WILL OBVIOUSLY BE A TOUGH GAME AGAINST A SIDE WHO TRAIN EVERY DAY AND ARE PROFESSIONAL. BUT, WHAT ARE YOUR EXPECTATIONS FROM THE GAME? It’s definitely going to be a challenge, that’s for sure. It will be a real test for everyone and also a great opportunity for some of the younger players who are aspiring to move up through the leagues. Obviously Morecambe are favourites as they are four divisions higher but that won’t stop us from giving it a go. And you never know...

12

MALDON & TIPTREE vs MORECAMBE

THE GAME IS BEING SCREENED LIVE ACROSS THE COUNTRY AND WORLD, ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO THE EXPERIENCE? What a fantastic experience for the whole club and all the families involved. It’s certainly a first for me and one I’m really looking forward to. Silly little things like having your name on the back of the shirt and being able to tell friends and family what time to tune in. It’s all part of it and something everyone will remember for a long time. TO REACH THE FIRST ROUND IN TWO CONSECUTIVE SEASONS IN A HUGE ACHIEVEMENT, ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU LOOK AT OUR TURN OVER OF PLAYERS. WHAT WOULD YOU PUT THE CLUBS SUCCESS DOWN TO? Massive achievement! The credit surely can’t go anywhere but to Browny and the management team. To have that kind of success two years in row, with two completely different sides, under difficult circumstances, and with less resources, just shows how good Browny and his team are. He always wants more, whether you’re one-nil down or four-nil up, which brings the best out in the group and is a pleasure to play for. WE HAVE ALREADY PRODUCED A NUMBER OF CUP-UPSETS THIS SEASON, JUST LIKE WE DID LAST SEASON. DO YOU THINK THAT’LL STAND US IN GOOD STEAD AGAINST MORECAMBE? October was a good month where we ended up beating three teams from higher divisions but this game is a different test. They will be sharper,

fitter, and more physical than other opponents we’ve played and we will have to match that on the day. Like every game, we will have a plan and try and execute that to the best of our ability. We couldn’t have put ourselves in a better position to play them so we’ll see what happens. YOU HAVE ACHIEVED LOTS WITHIN YOUR NON-LEAGUE CAREER, BUT WHERE DOES REACHING THE FIRST ROUND OF THE FA CUP RANK WITHIN YOUR ACHIEVEMENTS? Definitely up there! Winning the playoff final and winning the league were two obvious highlights, but this has a different feeling. It feels special because it’s the FA Cup, and even though the club did it last year, it’s a huge achievement to reach the first round and one that I’m sure won’t come along anytime soon. WE ARE WITHOUT THE SUPPORT OF OUR FANS FOR THE MATCH, HOW DO YOU THINK THIS WILL AFFECT THE BOYS, HAVING RECEIVED SUCH EXCELLENT SUPPORT THIS SEASON? The fans and their support have been unbelievable this year and it’s such a shame that they can’t be there to experience it with us. It definitely won’t be the same but hopefully we can try and ignore the fact that our great support isn’t there and focus on the job

at hand. I suspect it will be harder for Morecambe as they are used to playing in front of much larger crowds so it might work in our favour. FOLLOWING THE RECENT GUIDANCE ISSUED BY THE FA, NON-ELITE FOOTBALL IS ON PAUSE DURING THE CURRENT LOCKDOWN, BUT WE REMAIN ABLE TO PLAY IN THE FA CUP AS AN ELITE TEAM. HOW ARE YOU PLANNING TO SPEND THE NEXT FEW WEEKS, WITHOUT LEAGUE ACTION? To be honest, we haven’t really spoken about it yet as we have just been focused on the FA Cup. However, I’m gutted that the league has been put on pause because we have some really good momentum at the moment and to have to pick that back up again in a month will be difficult. All we can do over the next few weeks is keep fit and get ready for when we resume. I’m sure the gaffer will be sending out a training regime for us to follow while we’re at home. FINALLY, IF AND WHEN LEAGUE ACTION RESUMES, WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO THE MOST FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE SEASON? Probably just getting back to playing in the league every week with the games coming thick and fast. If we can build that momentum back up then I’m excited to see where we can finish.

MORECAMBE

IT’S BEEN A HUGELY POSITIVE START TO THE NEW SEASON FOR MORECAMBE WHO MAKE THE LONG TRIP DOWN TO ESSEX LOOKING TO PROGRESS PAST THE FIRST ROUND OF THE FA CUP FOR JUST THE SECOND TIME IN EIGHT YEARS. Offered up amongst the favourites for relegation each year, Derek Adams’ Shrimps have finished in the bottom quarter of League Two for six of the past seven seasons despite defying those odds for the drop. Improved form beyond the January transfer window, coupled with points deductions for Macclesfield Town and just the solitary relegation spot, ensured a much more comfortable finish for Morecambe last season, but the Shrimps will be casting an upwards glance at the table this season under the Adams’ stewardship. Yesterday marked the first anniversary of Adams’ appointment at the Mazuma Stadium and he is beginning to really make his mark on a club that had been under the leadership of Jim Bentley for almost ten years. Having achieved success in the fourth tier with Plymouth Argyle in recent seasons, there is plenty of cause for optimism on the Lancashire coast that the Shrimps’ bright start to this season can be sustained. Heading into his first full season in charge, Adams has overseen a busy summer transfer window with no fewer than 12 departures and a number of long-serving players making way, such as Kevin Ellison and Barry Roche. It has meant for something of a reset to the playing staff this season and the higher-tier experience of the incoming Stephen Hendrie, Nathaniel Knight-Percival and Ben Pringle, amongst others, will prove invaluable. Beginning the league season with an impressive away win at last season’s play-off semifinalists Cheltenham Town, Adams’ men followed that opening day victory with wins over Southend United, Port Vale and Oldham Athletic to find themselves atop the embryonic table by mid-October, in spite of a 5-0 defeat at home to Cambridge United in their second game. Their form has faltered slightly in recent weeks with defeats to Crawley Town, Forest Green Rovers and Carlisle United, but four points from their last two outings will inject confidence in the side ahead of this afternoon’s tricky cup encounter.

IN CHARGE: DEREK ADAMS 45-YEAR-OLD DEREK ADAMS WAS APPOINTED AS MORECAMBE BOSS A YEAR AGO AFTER DEPARTING HIS PREVIOUS JOB WITH PLYMOUTH ARGYLE IN APRIL 2019. The former Motherwell midfielder arrived at the Mazuma Stadium with an excellent record at League Two level, leading Argyle to promotion in 2017 during a spell that saw him take charge of some 213 games at Home Park, winning 90. Other than a single season in the mid-nineties with Burnley, Adams’ playing days were spent entirely in Scotland with the likes of Ross County, Motherwell and Aberdeen, racking up over 300 league appearances during a 17-year playing career. As player-coach in his second spell at Ross County, he became the manager in 2007 and won promotion whilst also leading County to the Scottish Cup Final. He would win another promotion with the club in 2012, and was named the PFA Scotland Manager of the Year. In 2014 he headed south to join Plymouth, guiding the Green Army to the League Two play-off final in his first season in charge, before going one better with automatic promotion the season after. A hugely successful three seasons saw Argyle narrowly miss out on the League One play-offs in 2018, but a nosedive in form during 2018/19 saw the Scot depart the south west with the side on the brink of relegation back to the fourth tier. With previous Shrimps boss Jim Bentley having been in the hotseat for the best part of a decade, Adams has delivered a renewed energy to the club. His Morecambe side began to deliver an improvement in form once he was able to begin dealing in the January transfer window, and they have started the new League Two campaign in fine style too, topping the table in mid-October having won four of their opening five in the league.

JAKE TURNER GOALKEEPER

21-year-old goalkeeper Jake Turner joins the Shrimps on a season-long loan deal from Newcastle United. Turner has been capped for the England U19s side and has been with at St. James' Park since last July. Beginning his career with Bolton Wanderers, Turner has had loan stints at Stalybridge Celtic and Darlington.

HARRY DAVIS DEFENDER

A centre-half who can also play as a full-back, Davis made the move to the Globe Arena after leaving Grimsby Town this summer. The 29-yearold, son of former Crewe Alexandra boss Steve, captained Crewe after coming through the youth ranks there. Before his two-year spell at Grimsby, Davis had a brief stint at St. Mirren.

THE KEY MEN...

FOUR IN FOCUS ADAM PHILLIPS MIDFIELDER

Highly-rated 20-yearold midfielder Phillips has rejoined the Shrimps this season for a second loan stint from Burnley. The youngster impressed last season after joining in January, netting four times in 11 outings prior to the season curtailing. This term, Phillips has bagged six times in a further 16 games from midfield.

COLE STOCKTON FORWARD

A product of the youth system at Tranmere Rovers, Stockton enjoyed two loan spells with Morecambe between 2016 and 2017. Brief stints with Hearts, Carlisle United and a return to Tranmere have followed, before he penned a permanent deal at the Mazuma Stadium last summer. He scored six goals in 35 outings last season.

MALDON & TIPTREE

CLUB HISTORY In 2009, Ed Garty took over the ownership of Maldon Town from Michael Kirkham, whilst still in charge of running Tiptree United and installed Alan Brockhouse as Maldon Town’s new chairman. Following the takeover, Colin Wallington returned for a second spell in charge of Maldon Town, leaving his post as Tiptree United manager immediately. Colin previously managed Maldon Town from 2003 until 2007, having achieved promotion in the 2005-06 via the play-off final. Having left Maldon in 2007, Colin went on to manage Tiptree United where he achieved promotion winning the Eastern Counties Division One title in the 2007/08 season. Until the conclusion of the 2009/10 season both Maldon Town & Tiptree United played their home games at Park Drive, under a ground share arrangement.

18

MALDON & TIPTREE vs MORECAMBE

In the summer of 2010, Maldon Town & Tiptree United amalgamated to form, Maldon & Tiptree Football Club, under the ownership of Ed Garty. As a result of the amalgamation, Tiptree United withdrew from the Essex Senior League, resulting in the clubs last ever fixture being a 3-1 defeat against Enfield 1893 on 24 April 2010. Maldon & Tiptree took the place of Maldon Town in the Isthmian Division One North. Following the retirement of Colin Wallington, Assistant Manager, Brad King and Glen Knight were appointed as the clubs Joint-Manager. As the pair’s first managerial role, the new club witnessed wholesale changes with only a handful of players remaining who finished the season with Maldon Town and Tiptree United, respectively. The 2010-11 campaign saw the

new club remain in or around the play-off positions for the majority of the season, finishing in eighth place to finish the season with sixty-three points. Despite the high turnover of players, the good standard of football was maintained and it was in the end, a disappointing end to the season, for the club to fall away in the later stages of the season when suspensions and injuries eventually took their toll to leave the club frustratingly short of the play-off positions at the end of April. The 2011-12 season, proved to not be so successful and in November 2011, King and Knight were relieved of their duties with immediate effect. Ex-Charlton professional Mike Flanagan was appointed as Caretaker Manager and remained in place until the end of the season, steering the club to a respectful mid-table finish, managing thirtythree games and finishing with a win percentage of 49.12%.

At the start of the 2012-13 campaign, Ex-Stansted & Redbridge boss Terry Spillane was appointed as Manager, and Mike Flanagan departed the club. The change of management, once again brought wholesale changes with the playing squad. Ex Tiptree United manager, Jody was brought to the club as Terry’s Assistant Manager. After a fantastic and unbeaten start to the season, the club found themselves at the top of the table but an incredible run by eventual Champions Grays Athletic meant Maldon had to settle for a place in the play-offs – Terry’s side remained unbeaten until Boxing Day, when they lost away from home against local rivals Heybridge Swifts. Disappointment came in the play-off final however when they lost a two goal lead to draw with Thamesmead Town, who thenwent on to win the final,on penalties. After a disappointing end to the previous season, Terry Spillane oversaw more wholesale changes in the playing squad, including the departure of Assistant Manager, Jody Brown. Despite the changes, Maldon finished in ninth position with seventysix points, winning twenty-one games.

Mudmen and The Jammers available. The vote took place in January 2015 and was featured on National Radio station, TalkSport, with the The Jammers winning the vote with over 50% and being confirmed as the clubs new nickname. Following the completion of the 2014-15 season, the club linked with Colchester United and the two clubs formed close ties, which resulted in ex Ipswich Town midfielder, David Wright being appointed as First Team Manager. Wright remained in charge until December 2015 as he was appointed Assistant Manager of Colchester United. Liam Bailey took charge of the First Team on a temporary basis, only managing one game, which finished four-all against Tilbury on Boxing Day in 2015. Moving into 2016, ex-Leiston Manager, Steve Ball was appointed First Team Manager and steered the club to a respectable finish in the league table climbing to seventh place, only missing out on the playoff places by nine points.

More changes to the playing staff, resulted in poor start to the 201415 season, and the club parted ways with Spillane in September 2014, with Chairman, Ed Garty takeover as Caretaker Manager, for three games. At the end of September 2014, Alan Kimble was appointed as manager and remained in charge for the remainder of the season, however the side struggled and more changes in the playing staff occurred. Maldon finished the season in nineteenth place with only forty-nine points.

In the closed season, a change of Management at Colchester United saw Steve Ball appointed as their Assistant Manager, leaving his position of Maldon & Tiptree Manager as a result. Ex-Manchester City midfielder, Kevin Horlock was then appointed as First Team manager ahead of the 2016-17 campaign and for the majority of the season, the Jammers sat at the top of the table before slipping away to finish in second place. Horlock’s side managed to reach the play-off final, however lost to Thurrock one-nil. The following campaign was not quite as successful for Horlock, with Maldon finishing just outside the play-off places in seventh place, with sixty-nine points.

During the 2014-15 season, Media Officer at the time, Richard Buckby ran a competition for supporters to vote for a club nickname, with the options The River Boys, The Marshmen, The

After managing 112 games, Kevin Horlock departed in the closed season and was replaced by ex-Colchester defender, Wayne Brown. In Brown’s first season in

charge, the 2018-19 season, the Jammers finished in second place and reached the play-off final, but lost on penalties against local rivals, Heybridge Swifts. The 2019-20 season was one to remember for the club, but for the right and wrong reasons. The club achieved great things in the Emirates FA Cup. Having reached the First Round proper of the competition, Maldon beat League Two side, Leyton Orient away from home, taking over 600 fans to the home of The O’s, with the goals coming from Danny Parish and a superb solo goal from Jorome Slew. In the second round proper, Maldon were drawn against Football League side, Newport County with the game being shown live on National Television– with the Jammers only beaten by the League Two side, with a goal in stoppage time, with the game finishing 1-0. A record attendance of 1876 was recorded. However, the 2019-20 season will also be remembered for the wrong reasons. After impressive performances on the field, the Jammers found themselves top of the Isthmian Division One North, thirteen points clear with four games in hand, when disaster struck. With a global pandemic declared, as a result of Coronavirus, the league competition was formally abandoned on 26 March 2020, with all results from the season being expunged, and no promotion or relegation taking place to, from, or within the division. The club were denied a chance of promotion and forced to remain in the Division One North for the 2020-21 season. Following the disappointing end to the 2020-21 season, Wayne Brown remained in charge of the club and wholesale changes in the playing squad occurred again, with a number of last season’s squad securing transfers to clubs higher up the football pyramid.

INTRODUCING

THE JAMMERS WAYNE BROWN

ADAM FLINT

WAYNE BROWN – FIRST TEAM MANAGER The former Ipswich Town, Colchester United, Hull City and Leicester City defender now in his third season in charge of the club.
