James Gannon Good afternoon and a warm welcome back to Edgeley Park, especially to Marcus Bignot, Russ O’Neill, their staff and players, and the officials of Guiseley FC that are able to attend today’s game. It is nice to welcome Marcus and Russ to Edgeley Park to repay the compliment for them hosting us in preseason. However, this game will certainly have a far greater competitive edge. The Lions are taking this competition seriously and fielded a full-strength side in the last round of the competition and ran out well-deserved winners against Chorley FC on Tuesday evening. I am sure that we are in for a tough, competitive game this afternoon. My only disappointment for this afternoon is the fact that the potential return of fans was halted for a further while as we remain in tier three for the safety of the community over the coming Christmas weeks. It would have been so nice to have even a small crowd for today’s game. As I am sure that whatever number of fans were in attendance would have made a huge difference to the feel of the game, and lifted the spirits of everyone at Edgeley Park. On a positive note, this afternoon does afford a welcome break from the league, especially after such a disappointing defeat. We are probably in need of a mix up to the team, to allow for some freshness, enthusiasm and new energy. This game also allows the heavily loaded players a rest in time for the relentless programme of league games that continues again on Tuesday and throughout the Christmas period. I am sure that those players who haven’t played much will be desperate to impress, and we believe it’s important to keep them involved and motivated by having faith in them when the opportunity arises. I trust that they will make a difference and enjoy the experience. Enjoy the match. JG

COUNTY JUNIORS

S P O N S O R E D B Y:

Hello again and welcome to another digital programme for today’s FA Trophy match. So today’s visitors will be Guiseley, who defeated Chorley 2-0 in the previous round. In the league we have had two great away wins both at Bromley and Barnet which moved us up the table until last Saturday’s game with Sutton was called off on the morning of the game, which moved us back down the league with a number of games in hand. It’s a bit like playing snakes and ladders at present. Last Sunday seemed a strange day as it would have been our Christmas Party day. We think it is the first party we have missed in about 30-plus years. Brenda put a number of photos from last year on our Facebook page and we were surprised at the number of comments saying how disappointed you all were at missing out this year. Hopefully this terrible virus will have soon gone away and we can look forward to our Saturday afternoons at Edgeley Park. A number of you have asked whether we can hold another zoom meeting. We have decided to leave it until in the New Year, we will contact Jim Gannon after the festivities are over and arrange a date convenient to him and will let you know when it will take place. That’s all for today, just to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and I hope Santa brings all the presents you have asked for. Ian Butterworth 06

Welcome...

Guiseley AFC A recent nemesis of ours visit Edgeley Park today, with Guiseley here to defend a proud record of never losing to County in six previous encounters. More than two years have passed since Guiseley last visited SK3, with a 1-1 draw that October night replicated in the return league fixture in February 2019. Guiseley have won three of the other four competitive games between the two clubs (which were notably all squished into 2014, due to a quirk of the fixture lists over two seasons) and have outscored County by 13 goals to five across all six previous meetings. The West Yorkshire club played in the National League between 2015 and 2018, finishing one place above the relegation zone in consecutive seasons, then bottom of the table in 2018. They have gradually been recovering ever since their return to the National League North, finishing 19th in 2019, then 9th last season. A slow start to the current campaign sees The Lions sit 19th in the table, with a record of three wins, two draws and six losses in 11 games. However, their 2-0 victory over Chorley on Tuesday night in the previous round of this competition was their second consecutive win, following on from a 4-2 triumph last Saturday against Southport. Former County man Kaine Felix was on the scoresheet in both games and he’s proved to be an excellent signing for the club, scooping three end-of-season awards after his successful transition from a wide player to a central striker last term. Joint manager Russ O’Neill described him as a “totally different animal” from the player he and Marcus Bignot first signed in 2018. Felix played 23 games for County on loan from York City in the 2016-17 season under Jim Gannon, scoring twice for the club.

08

County fans might also recall Dan Cowan joining Guiseley after his summer release from Edgeley Park, though he recently moved on to Curzon Ashton. Away from home Guiseley have just one victory to their name so far this season, with a 2-0 win against Spennymoor on December 1st. Form often counts for little in cup-ties though and in midfielder Milan Butterfield The Lions have someone who was a cup hero here at Edgeley Park just a matter of weeks ago. Butterfield joined Guiseley on loan from Chesterfield on December 12th and County fans may remember it was the tall Bermudian international that scored the equaliser for his parent club, which led to the penalty shootout in our first FA Cup meeting. He then slotted home the crucial penalty. Of course, administrative errors subsequently rendered his efforts null and void, though it’s all useful experience and positive memories to draw upon! However, Butterfield and co have some way to go in the FA Trophy before they can emulate former Guiseley greats. The club reached the semi-final of the competition in 1994, ultimately losing a twolegged semi-final to Runcorn. They also reached the quarter-finals in the 2010-11 season. If they can continue their dominance over County today then a return to such heights edges ever closer...

County Heaven Hatter in Macc writes: Greetings from Edgeley Park for the final time this side of Christmas - and a metaphorically warm, but meteorologically wintry, welcome back to SK3 to recent rivals of yore, Guiseley, following their FA Trophy victory at Nethermoor in midweek.

Sandbach Hatter writes: I have indeed, my festive chum! And, while we’re on the subject, did I tell you that I bought my Christmas tree last weekend? At the checkout, the cashier asked me if I was going to put it up myself - so I told him no, it’s going in the lounge!

Hatters of most ages will remember that we have neither faced the ‘Lions’ in a knockout-tie before, nor ever beaten them anywhere in competitive battle - although, technically, our overall Guiseley duck did at least get broken three months back by virtue of a thumping friendly triumph across the Pennines that was also notable for James Jennings’ first-half hat-trick. Just a shame, with it taking place as part of this season’s pre-season schedule, that the doors were closed for the whole delightful spectacle!

Over at County Heaven, we’re gearing up for a slightly different Christmas this year, with the prospect of seeing live football, not to mention our extended families, looking unlikely at the time of writing – but, if there’s one thing (or person) we can always rely on, it’s our technical wizard, Gazz, making the site look all festive again. It honestly doesn’t feel like Christmas until he’s shown us his snowballs.

Since our last notes, continued FA Cup involvement into the New Year has been ensured courtesy of extratime victory here against Yeovil, while the subsequent resumption of National League action, following the Hatters’ COVID-enforced break during November, has kept its focus entirely on the road - culminating most recently with a disappointing, single-goal defeat four nights ago against the League’s other County in Nottingham. That said, we enjoyed, prior to Tuesday, successive away-wins at Bromley and Barnet, before the U’s of Sutton were prevented from travelling to EP last Saturday and the consequential late postponement disappointingly denied us a hat-trick of meetings with, and potentially successes against, London opposition.

Plus, it’s also time for our other annual tradition – the County Heaven Awards! Yet again, the ‘host with the most’, Epworth, has opened the voting, with members getting to have their say on the following gongs: Player of the Year; Goal of the Year; Best County Heaven Achievement; Thread of the Year; Funniest Heavener; Games Master; Staff Member of the Year; and, finally, the overall Heavener of the Year! If you would like to take a sneak peek at this year’s winners (before I reveal all in our Christmas programmes), pop along to CH on Monday! Finally, since this is County’s last home match before the big day, on behalf of myself, Maccy, and everyone else at County Heaven, we wish you and yours a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Animo et Fide.

Festive good wishes to Hatters everywhere, anyway. And, who knows, if an early tier review in 2021 goes Stockport’s way, there might even be a few more of us on site to cheer for the team soon after the new year has got under way. Potentially, all round, the best belated yuletide present of all... So, Sandy, have you got your baubles out, and a stocking of choice ready to fill?

Even the best teams lose football matches - it’s how you respond that matters. After Tuesday’s 1-0 defeat at Notts County, this afternoon’s FA Trophy clash with Guiseley may be an opportunity for Jim Gannon to rotate his squad following an often-laboured display at Meadow Lane in midweek. Several players looked below their best during the 90 minutes, not surprising given the impact of Covid on our squad coupled with the recent long trips to London, and Jim will no doubt have more than one eye on the hectic festive schedule to come as he ponders his team selection today. But take nothing away from Notts County, who scored a sumptuous winning goal, a nine-man move involving 15 consecutive passes before finding the back of the net. As for today, well County have never beaten Guiseley in our six competitive meetings since 2014, but Jim Gannon’s men certainly tamed the Lions in pre-season, winning 5-1 at Nethermoor thanks to an unlikely hat trick from James Jennings. County’s players in form are John Rooney and Alex Reid with five goals each in the last six games, whilst Ash Palmer will be looking forward to facing the club he used to captain. The Lions were ending last season strongly, until the Covid pandemic halted their progress, leaving them ninth in the National League North. Their current league position, just above the drop zone, looks like a false one, with games in hand on many clubs above them, and some talented young players in their squad. Under two of the best managers in non-league, Russ O’Neill and Marcus Bignot, Guiseley are already improving as their last two results have shown, with victories over Southport in the league and Chorley in the Trophy. I watched their win over Chorley and was really impressed with their invention and their willingness to try

Alex Reid has five goals in six games

and play football, as the Magpies well and truly had their wings clipped. Their danger man, as ever, is the pacy Kaine Felix, always a popular figure during his time on loan at Edgeley Park four years ago, and he remains a potent threat in non-league. County reached the last four of this competition in 2019, but we’re yet to find our way to the final. Many fans might think the FA Trophy is an inconvenience during this congested campaign, but don’t let Jim Gannon hear you say that. He will see this as a viable route to Wembley and possibly some silverware at the end of the season. Yes, the league is the priority, but with County’s strength in depth, there is no reason to downplay any of the cup competitions this season. Finally, on a sad note, I spoke to Linda Beverley this week, widow of our former Chairman, Norman, and she wanted me to pass on her sincere thanks for all the messages of condolence she has received. Yesterday, Norman made one final journey past Edgeley Park, before proceeding to Stockport Crematorium, but I’m sure he’ll be with us in spirit this afternoon. RIP Norman.

GAME CHANGER footballfoundation.org.uk

Terrace Talk Cup action of a different kind takes centre stage at Edgeley Park this afternoon as Marcus Bignot and Russ O’Neill bring their Guiseley side over the Pennines for this Buildbase FA Trophy Third Round encounter. Guiseley currently sit two places above the relegation zone in the National League North table and have previously beaten Chorley just a matter of days ago in order to set up today’s tie, which for County is a quick turnaround at home after last week’s game against Sutton United was postponed due to the Covid-19 situation. Alex Reid was unable to add to his impressive form in front of goal in the midweek defeat against Notts County, but the way he has started his first few months as a Stockport player will single him out as a player who opponents see as a danger in the weeks and months that lie ahead. In the Guiseley front line could be 18-year old Adam Haw, who came off the bench with minutes to spare against Chorley to score the winning goal. The teenager only started training with the first team a matter of weeks ago but was cool and composed with his finish past the Magpies’ goalkeeper Matt Urwin. Another Guiseley player on target the other day in Lancashire was Kaine Felix, who of course was loaned to Stockport four years ago whilst on the books of York City. With the exception of Tuesday night, December has been a good month for Jim Gannon and his side so far and there will be a lot of football to be played over the next couple of weeks in the National League and cup competitions so plenty to play for.

December has been a good month for County so far

Over the next fortnight alone there are scheduled matches away against Hartlepool United and at home to Wrexham with Altrincham playing County both home and away within a week of one another either side of the New Year. The uncertainty of the tier system in Greater Manchester has meant County have had to play in front of no fans, but hopefully either for today’s game or in a few weeks there will be supporters allowed back here at Edgeley Park. Credit must go to the players for maintaining professional standards throughout as it must be strange to keep motivated in empty stadiums, without your own crowd roaring you on and indeed strangely enough

the opposing crowd giving that bit of banter and heckling. Back in September it was a comprehensive victory for Stockport when they came up against Guiseley in pre-season. It was the first game in seven that Jim Gannon’s side had managed to overcome their Yorkshire opponents courtesy of a James Jennings hattrick and further efforts from Richie Bennett and John Rooney. Hopefully a similar scoreline will ensue from a County point of view but in Marcus Bignot the Lions have a co-manager who has had his fair share of cup shocks both with his current club and Solihull Moors. An interesting tie awaits!

Fixture Changes

Ben Hinchliffe Shirt Raises Money for Royal British Legion

Our National League fixture at home to Eastleigh has been rearranged, and will now take place on Tuesday 5th January, with kick-off at 7:45pm.

Ben Hinchliffe’s Remembrance shirt has raised £451 for the Royal British Legion.

Originally scheduled to take place on Tuesday 12th Jan, the fixture has been brought forward a week due to our FA Cup commitments, as we are due to host West Ham United on the Monday night (11th January). The West Ham game will be televised live on BT Sports 1. Further fixture details will be announced in due course.

An anonymous County fan made the winning bid in an online auction to claim the shirt worn by Ben on his 200th appearance for the Hatters. All proceeds are going to the Legion’s annual Poppy Appeal. County commentator and Legion spokesman, Jon Keighren, said: “The auction attracted huge interest and we are delighted this collector’s item has proved so popular. Never before in the history of the Poppy Appeal, even throughout the Second World War, have all face-to-face collections in England been cancelled, and the loss of vital funds this year due to lockdown could impact the support the Legion provides to hundreds of thousands of members of the Armed Forces community. Every poppy counts, so we are grateful to everyone who supported this auction.”

Luke Smith Physio

Good afternoon everyone. This week we have a full squad with no injuries. Some players have managed their training sessions this week to allow them the best possible chance of being involved for today’s game. With a busy next few weeks ahead it is imperative that we utilise the time we have and focus on recovery strategies, player management, and squad rotation which will hopefully see us gain maximum points and boost our league position. Enjoy the game, Luke

FA Trophy Memories FA Trophy Third Round, 2nd February 2019

Harrogate Town 2 County 4

Report: Gareth Evans

County belied their position one division below high-flying Harrogate Town by handing their North Yorkshire opponents a lesson in clinical finishing to progress into the FA Trophy Quarter-Finals...

The Hatters achieved a 10th straight victory in all competitions with arguably their finest display during the sequence, as they tore apart National League Harrogate Town on Wetherby Road’s 3G surface to advance into the FA Trophy Quarter-finals for the second year running. On a day when the wintry weather ruled out all other play between clubs in non-league’s top two tiers any further north than Chesterfield, County, having initially gone behind, really went to ‘Town’ – scoring twice in each half, and rendering the hosts’ late second goal a mere consolation. The Hatters took to the artificial pitch showing just one change from their starting line-up at FC United of Manchester a week previously. And a predictable one it was, too, as recently-arrived defender Lewis Baines, on loan from Fleetwood Town, replaced, within a 4-2-3-1 formation, Jamie Stott, who had returned to parent club Oldham Athletic following the completion of his loan spell.

24

County might have been facing a joint-highest scoring side from the level above, but displayed a boldness in possession from the outset – with both Sam Minihan and Adam Thomas working to good effect, and delivering dangerous crosses, from the right flank. The hosts, for their part, offered little more in attack during the first quarter of an hour than a side-footed effort from distance by on-loan defender Liam Kitching that skimmed well wide of the right post. But, shortly afterwards, they were to go ahead – with the aid of a huge slice of luck.

Such fortune did not, alas, favour Jordan Keane, whose attempt, after 17 minutes, to cut out Jack Emmett’s low cross from the right saw the ball deflect into the roof of the net, as the Hatters conceded their first goal in the current season’s Trophy competition. But within another five minutes, County, incredibly, had taken the lead. Matters were levelled after Darren Stephenson cleverly held up and laid off the ball to Thomas, who slotted past James Belshaw and into the bottom-left corner. And then, immediately following kick-off, the Hatters regained possession before Ash Palmer’s long ball was missed by Kitching – allowing Frank Mulhern to latch on to it and fire home under the advancing home goalkeeper. Town attempted to respond ahead of the interval, albeit largely without serious threat in County’s final third. Leading scorer Jack Muldoon fired into the sidenetting, and Ben Hinchliffe comfortably caught volleys from the edge of the box by Emmett and George Thomson – although County’s Number One was rather more seriously tested on the stroke of half-time, when he did well to parry away another Thomson strike following a Harrogate break. HALF-TIME: Harrogate 1 (Keane (o.g.), 17), County 2 (Thomas, 21; Mulhern, 22). Such are the fine margins in football that, while the first half had ended with the Hatters – thanks to Hinchliffe’s late save – just managing to keep their noses in front, the second began with a third successful strike to put them firmly in control of the tie. With just three minutes of the new half played, Matty Warburton intercepted a poor back-pass by Warren Burrell before rounding Belshaw and drilling home for his 22nd goal of the campaign.

Minihan and Warburton fired efforts beyond the home crossbar, as County continued to press – and Warburton also saw his free-kick from five yards outside the box tipped over by Belshaw. The hosts made two attacking substitutions as they sought to reduce their arrears, and duly applied some pressure as Thomson saw a low shot tipped past the right post by Hinchliffe, and Palmer hacked away a goal-bound effort from the newly-introduced Aaron Williams. But the Hatters hit back – with Scott Duxbury, after 78 minutes, taking advantage of a slip by Ryan Fallowfield on the left and forcing Belshaw to parry. And a minute later, their advantage was further extended as Thomson lost possession on the halfway-line – from where Mulhern advanced on goal, drew out Belshaw, and, despite the attentions of recovering defenders, steadied himself to fire in his second goal of the afternoon and 15th of the season. With only two minutes remaining, County looked poised to register a precise reverse of the 4-1 scoreline suffered at Wetherby Road in the National League North just over a year earlier. Thomson put paid to that by converting, from six yards, Fallowfield’s low cross on the right – but Harrogate’s second was but a most minor of late dents in an afternoon that deservedly saw the Hatters in the hat for Monday’s draw. FULL-TIME: Harrogate 2 (Keane (o.g.), 17; Thomson, 88), County 4 (Thomas, 21; Mulhern, 22 and 79; Warburton, 48). Team: Hinchliffe, Minihan, Duxbury, Keane, Palmer (Capt.), Baines, Thomas, Walker, Mulhern (Kirby, 82), Warburton (Cowan, 66), Stephenson (Turnbull, 76). Unused Subs: Ormson, Osborne. Booked: Baines. Attendance: 1,142.

County earned their first-ever goal and point at Nethermoor against Guiseley – and, in doing so, inched to within three points of leaders Chorley who were beaten by Southport. The gap at the top could have been narrowed even further, as County took the lead through Darren Stephenson just ahead of the break – although an archetypal ‘game of two halves’, that featured lively winds and a heavy pitch, saw the hosts equalise before the hour was up.
