COUNTY REPORTS
COUNTY CHAIRLADY ELLIE GEMMILL
Harvest is upon us and the weather is hotter than ever! Where do I start? Well the last few months have flown by and Young Farmers is settling down, but so much has happened since spring and I’m just going highlight a few of the best events. Back in April the Bosworth family very kindly allowed us to host the EYF County Ball in Willingale. With over 300 attendees it was a great success and Miles Leeder and his band got us all on the dance floor. Well done to Lucy Hithchcock and her team for putting on a fantastic do and a big thank you also goes to Ernest Doe and New Holland for sponsoring the event. Where would we be without our sponsors?! The following weekend we had Prelims, with the party on the Friday, Point 2 Point on the Saturday and the Prelims games on the Sunday - it was a jam-packed weekend! I think this was the first proper event Young Farmers had done where everything felt like the good old days. The weather was sunny that weekend, we had a great turnout from every club and the atmosphere was on great form despite the hangovers! Between Prelims and Show there were a couple of parties and boozey balls, not to mention the amazing Mann’s (CLAAS) tour that was open to both members and subscribers - thank you to Chris Scott for organising. Now where do I start with Show? I had never done a Show week before and if you haven’t then you really should. It was amazing to see how everyone pulled together and how well Ben Cove, Amy Walker-Roy, the Show committee and all members involved coordinated on the day. We actually had our record attendance and I don’t think I could have asked for a better way to finish my two years as Chairlady. There were so many memories from that week and some I can’t quite remember, but the party couldn’t have gone any better with the amount of people we had through the door. It was when I walked around the Showground on Saturday evening that I realised what we’re capable of when we all work together. All the hard work in the last year had definitely paid off and what an achievement it was. It certainly gave me that wow factor as to what we
04
had accomplished given the fact we all have full-time jobs in real life! Show week truly brought us all together and I think it reminded a few of us what Essex Young Farmers is really all about, and it is so true when I say you make friends for life... or at least I think you do! Whilst I have you reading this I would like to take the opportunity to thank all those who have helped me in the last two years the support I have received in these years has kept me going until the end. From starting my Chairlady journey during COVID in 2020 when my feet were fresh under the table and I didn’t really know what I had let myself in for until July this year. The things EYF has achieved in my time as Chair is truly amazing - we now have more members then we did pre-COVID, two years of no EYF Show to then having our highest record attendance yet and I think I can safely say the finances are looking healthy. Everyone associated with the Essex Young Farmers community I am very grateful for, because without you and our members, subscribers, VPs and, of course, Jenny in the office, none of this would have been possible. Young Farmers opens up so many doors to all of us, whether it’s a role on a committee or organising a party or a club night experience you’re not so sure about. My advice to anyone thinking about joining our community or taking on a role, whether that be club level or county, is to grab every opportunity that is offered to you because the people you meet through these experiences and the skills you gain are so valuable to have and it’s also another feather added to the cap! So thank you all for making these last two years an experience I’ll never forget!
County Ball with Jack Anger and Marcus Bailey
Our wonderful VPs
Show day
Last but not least, I would just like to congratulate Oliver Weavers who I have handed the reins over to and his Executive Committee for embarking on their roles - I wish you the best of luck for next year. However this won’t be the last you hear from me, as I will be taking on the Subscribers role at County so please stay tuned for what I have in store. Over and out.

COUNTY REPORTS
PRESIDENT’S REPORT JANE CAREY
I think we can safely say that Essex Young Farmers are back! In April we held our Prelims Day which was organised, brilliantly I might say, by Jess Faulkner and it was nice to see some old faces and new ones too joining in the fun. Members threw themselves, literally in some cases, into the games and competitions arranged by Jess and her team, some of the escapades where hilarious! A fantastic day. Several clubs have held parties and balls, so it’s good to see that members are socialising again. At the beginning of April the Bosworth family kindly allowed the County Ball to be held at Spains Hall, Willingale, a sincere thank you to them and congratulations to Lucy Hitchcock for organising a really prestigious event. It was lovely to see so many current and past members enjoying themselves. County organised a visit to Claas at Bury St. Edmunds in April for subscribers and what a fascinating place to look around it was - seeing the technology and products of the future was quite breathtaking. The Claas team made us very welcome, answering all of our questions and explaining highly-specialised subjects in layman’s terms, which even I nearly understood. Refreshments at the end of the evening, which were wonderful, gave everyone an opportunity to discuss the finer points of the Claas range. A big thank you to Chris Scott and the boys and girls at Claas for an eye-opening visit. The biggest gathering was the Pre-Show Party in May where about 350 members and guests attended. A Baywatch theme was expressed with some fairly extrovert costumes! We had a magnificent Show, organised by Ben Cove and his committee - what a Show it was!
I THOUGHT THERE WAS A DEFINITE BUZZ AROUND THE SHOWGROUND THIS YEAR, EVERYONE SEEMED EXCITED TO BE OUT AND ABOUT AGAIN AND THE SHOW GAVE THEM THE PERFECT DAY OUT. THE POSITIVE COMPLIMENTS THAT CAME OUR WAY MADE MY HEART SWELL WITH PRIDE
appreciate the hours and hours of work members put into the Show. It is an absolutely immense effort of gargantuan proportions. I must thank Jack Anger for the all work he did as F&GP Chair, he has stood down for personal reasons and I give him my best wishes. Lewis Rabett is holding the fort until a new Chair can be elected. Well done to the Colchester boys and girls tug of war teams for coming third at Eastern Area. I had the privilege to attend Colchester’s 75th Anniversary Ball and what a great night it was, so thank you Colchester Young Farmers for inviting Richard and me; I even managed to come home with a raffle prize. The meal was most enjoyable and the band was excellent, keeping us up and dancing way past my normal bedtime! As I write this report Ellie Gemmill will be coming to the end of her two years as County Chair.
An estimated 20,000 people attended and the sun definitely shone that day. All the hundreds of hours of hard work put in by the committee and others paid off, it was nice to walk around and see so many people. I thought there was a definite buzz around the Showground this year, everyone seemed excited to be out and about again and the Show gave them the perfect day out. The positive compliments that came our way made my heart swell with pride. Thank you again to the Philpots for the use of their land and to all our sponsors for their continued support - we are very fortunate. Also thanks must go to our subscribers and Vice Presidents who help with the Pre-Show Party and what is a mega clear up afterwards! This is the first Show that I have been actively involved in, and I really did not
I’m in my office, the sun is shining and it is bright and warm. Those adjectives define Ellie perfectly; she is certainly a bright cookie and the warmth with which she has handled the trials and tribulations of being Chair have been exemplary. It’s been a privilege to work with you Ellie, thank you. Ellie is the only Chair to have done a two-year stint, so well done, especially as you saw County through COVID and the difficulties that threw up. Take a well earned rest Ellie, oh no, I forgot, you’re doing Subscribers next year - good luck! Ollie Weavers from Colchester will be the next County Chair, so I wish him and his new committee all the best.

SHOW 2022
WOW! What a Show! A huge well done and thanks to everyone that organised the day, helped set up throughout the week, spent their day helping around the Show and also clearing up afterwards. After two years without a Show, we had over 20,000 people through the gates which kept our members busy all day. A massive thank you to everyone in attendance, you’ve helped to keep Essex Young Farmers alive after a really tough couple of years! Congratulations to everyone involved and see you next year!

COUNTY REPORTS
COUNTY OFFICE MATTERS JENNY MASKELL
Writing the magazine report comes around so quickly, so I’m sitting at my desk on what is the hottest day of the year, thinking about what has happened over the year. Ellie Gemmill has just stepped down as our County Chairperson after two very difficult years of being in the role, and what an amazing job she has done congratulations, Ellie. The Essex Young Farmers Show was back after two years of absence, and what a Show it was! Ben and his committee certainly did Essex proud. The committee were excellent and ran all of their areas with the professionalism we have come to expect. It’s sometimes hard to remember they are all under 28, volunteers and with full-time jobs.
Over 20,000 visitors, a packed Showground and gates opening up on time – for me, it was my first Show working for Essex Young Farmers, but a week I will not be forgetting in a hurry and one I was proud to be part of. My thanks must go to Catherine Leeder for stepping in and helping me, as without her I fear I will still be stuffing envelopes and putting everything in alphabetical order! Thank you, Catherine.
May I wish you all a great summer and see you all soon.
Now, for me, it’s catch up time doing all those little jobs that you put aside!

Hi all, The club is now slowing down for harvest but we have had a really good few months leading up to summer! We have enjoyed some really good club meetings such as…
LUCY HITCHCOCK
• A joint tour with Dunmow around Harlow Agricultural Merchants (thanks for the invite, Dunmow!) • A talk about Horse Dentistry • Pub Crawl • Farm tour around Little Linton Farms • Show club board night • Show set-up • Farm tour around E W Davies Farms • Tour around Chilford Hall Vineyards • Pub socials Well done to Hamish Beaton for organising the majority of these! We had a fab turnout of club members who came and helped set-up, clear down and run around on Show day which was brilliant to see - I think everyone really enjoyed all aspects of the Show, especially the party! I hope you all have a lovely summer, see you all in September!

Hi all, I hope everyone’s keeping well and managing to beat the heat! Chelmsford Young Farmers have had a really busy run up to harvest with the main event obviously being the Young Farmers Show!

EVERY SINGLE MEMBER REALLY GAVE IT THEIR ALL THROUGHOUT THE WEEK/WEEKEND, WE ENJOYED A LOT OF GOOD LAUGHS AND AN INCREDIBLY SUCCESSFUL SHOW
All I can say is how proud I’ve been as a Chairman over the whole Show period of how committed and stuck in the members have been with Show. Every single member really gave it their all throughout the week/weekend, we enjoyed a lot of good laughs and an incredibly successful Show to top it off. I didn’t manage to make it down to livestock on Show day but, from what I heard from Hamish, everybody really got stuck in and helped to run the area as smoothly as possible, which was amazing to hear as Chairman. So hats off to all of them! The weeks following the Show have been quite a bit more relaxed and with some good weather, we’ve been out making the most of it. We managed to get out to Hylands Park for a game of rounders followed by a good old social at our regular, the Rose and Crown! We also enjoyed a clay shooting evening where most of our members took to firing off a few shots on a lovely evening, whilst there were also a few exChelmsford members who joind us - they’re always welcome! A massive thank you also must go to the Benton family for continuing to host us! As I write this the majority of our members are already flat out with harvest and, as well as hoping it will be a fruitful harvest, I also hope it will be a safe one! It’s always worth noting that as well as staying safe and healthy in a physical sense this harvest, remember to check on your mates in a mental sense and as a club we always try to make sure we stay in touch with each other, and try and get some time to catch up for a social on a wet day... which is more important than ever at this time of year! I’m looking forward to kicking things back off again in September with a new and exciting year ahead of us but, until then, stay safe and have a fantastic summer and harvest. All the best.

Hey everyone, I hope you’re having a great summer so far! Since the last issue, Colchester have hosted some pretty big events. We welcomed Honiton YFC from Devon for an exchange weekend in March. Not only did we spend a lot of time in the pub, we were kindly hosted by Will at Allens Farm Partners who gave us a great tour round their onion storage and AD plant. Some of our members attended the County Ball which was a huge success. Following the County Ball, the majority of our members attended Prelims at County and absolutely smashed it! We came in first place in lawn mower racing and both boys and girls tug of war which ultimately led to a win overall for a second year running!
ERIN THOMAS
IT WAS OVERWHELMING TO SEE MONTHS OF ORGANISING COME TOGETHER FOR A NIGHT FILLED WITH GREAT FOOD, MUSIC AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, PEOPLE WHO ALL HAVE A COMMON GROUND
The next big event in everyone’s diary was EYFC Show! We spent a few club nights creating our Jubilee-themed items for the exhibition tent and attended the club set-up evening. Colchester were on car parking duty for most of the day which, in the scorching heat with over 20,000 attendees, was not an easy feat. We hope everyone had a great day overall. Our boys and girls tug of war team shone through again, coming in first place in Show…next up, Eastern Area! Speaking of Eastern Area, both our teams worked extremely hard to get there but were unfortunately knocked out and haven’t made it to Nationals. We certainly didn’t give up without a fight and will be back stronger than ever next season! Our foam party was next in the calendar. Having not been hosted since 2017/18, it was
Boys tug of war team
great to be able to put on such a unique party for everyone. Huge thanks go to the Speakman family for allowing us to fill one of your barns with foam… we know it wasn’t fun to clear up, but it was worth it! We have had some great Monday night meetings including a trip to Morley Skips for a fantastic tour round the plant, learning about where our skip waste goes… of course we had to ask what the weirdest item they’ve found was! East Essex Hunt was another great tour, there is a lot more to it than meets the eye and the hounds were incredible to see. At the beginning of July 2022, we hosted our 75th Anniversary Ball at the Tendring Showground. This event took months of planning with a lot of stressful meetings and many late nights of prep. We welcomed over 280 attendees ranging from past members, current members, past Chairmen, Presidents, sponsors and so many different people. It was overwhelming to see months of organising come together for a night filled with great food, music and most importantly, people who all have a common ground. I may be biased but I have to say it’s got to be up there with one of the best balls in a long time! None of it would have been possible without our table and raffle sponsors, our main sponsor Stanfords and the incredible organisation of the 75th Ball committee. They worked tirelessly making sure everything was perfect for the evening, so THANK YOU. That’s all from me for this year but hope you all have the best summer and get ready for another fun-filled year in 2023!

Hey everyone, summer has finally come around!
To start off the summer, we had the Essex Young Farmers Show in which Dunmow ran the bar and the girls did a fab job pulling in tug of war! After the Show, Dunmow and all the clubs came together and did an amazing job in the clear up!

WE HAVE HAD SOME AMAZING TOURS SUCH AS A TOUR AROUND KWS SEED SPECIALISTS, JOINT WITH ASH AND SAFF, WHICH WAS VERY INFORMATIVE AND EVERYONE LEARNT A LOT!
Since then, there have been some amazing parties such as the foam party which Colchester had, Halstead’s White Lies party and the Wix Free Booze. Everyone had a great time and we look forward to all the parties next year has to bring! We have had some amazing tours such as a tour around KWS Seed Specialists, joint with Ash and Saff, which was very informative and everyone learnt a lot! Thank you for having us. We also had a joint-tour with Ash and Saff around E W Davies Farm in Thaxted, including a trailer ride around the farm, explaining the crops and showing us their sheep and pigs. This was enjoyed by everyone so, again, thank you for having us. We have had some other fun meets such as going to Top Golf. We have also had some lovely pub meets where everyone could catch up to end off the year for summer. Our Chairlady Isla hosted a wonderful BBQ and did food deliveries for those already starting harvest! Dunmow has some exciting events coming up such as the Ministry of Sound in August to celebrate the year and how well our club has done. We also have our Annual Harvest Supper on 29th October which is enjoyed and loved by everyone, whilst most excitingly, we have Dunmow’s 80th Anniversary Ball on 1st April. If you are looking to join Dunmow in September, please message our social media or our Chairlady Isla on 07584 676656 and we will welcome you in! Until next time,

Hi everyone, Halstead have had a good year with lots of new faces appearing and a good amount of members signing up. We have enjoyed a good variety of activities and pub socials throughout the year with most of them being well-attended.
PAIGE MITCHELL
Our ‘Mr Essex’ party was a highlight for us as we had very good attendance which meant we managed to raise a good amount of money for our charity. We also did Christmas tree collections and the money we raised from that will also be going to our chosen charity. This year we chose to support Home Start and we look to donating the money we have raised to them. It’s all very quiet with us now as harvests hits so it will be a few quiet pub socials from now on. Well done to everyone who has done roles this year and good luck to those for next year. See you all around.

Hi all, it’s Katie here with a final update on what Maldon Young Farmers have been up to! What a year it has been! From diverse club meetings, weekend socials and charity fundraising… we sure have managed to pack a lot in. Following up from the last report, we have since had our Annual Charity Clay Shoot and raised over a smashing £2,000 for Crohn’s & Colitis.
KATIE GOFF
Reflecting on some of this year’s highlights, one of the club’s meets that particularly stands out (not just because of its height and rather striking yellow colour, though it is hard to miss) is our Eastern Crane Hire Demo evening. Thanks to our Club President, Chris, for hosting the evening, he had members hooked and discovering some hidden operating talents. Another firm favourite was our car treasure hunt - a racing evening, bringing out both the competitive and rather creative side of the club. Despite female driver stigma, the girls proved that they can in fact drive faster (or at least more efficiently) than the boys! Jokes aside, it’s fair to say that everyone enjoyed themselves and that goes beyond just this meeting but throughout the whole year!
Boys tug of war team
Boys at the ball
Car treasure hunt
An event that we very much look forward to every year Eastern Crane Hire is the Blackwater show. As always, Maldon thoroughly enjoyed helping in the operations, both prior and during the Show day. Much like County Show, there was a great spirit amongst everyone and plenty of laughter… it was also a great opportunity to show our gratitude to David French for all the support that he has and continues to give the club! There has been no shortage of balls this year and, for a matter of fact, no shortage of the Maldon club turnout. It is clear that Maldon love an excuse to get dressed up and we have certainly taken advantage of that this year. To finish off, we ‘rounded’ off the year with a game of rounders and a BBQ. No doubt, this did include our traditional slip and slide. Funnily enough, a slip and slide does not go hand-in-hand with a Discovery, as Mr Chairman was sure to find out (I’m not sure who was more worse off)! On that note, a huge thank you to Tom Carr for being a fantastic Chairman, bringing the fun and making the year a great success!

That’s all from me, have a fabulous summer and I look forward to seeing you all come September!

Another year of Young Farmers is over and we couldn’t have ended it any better with the outstanding success of the Show. Although we have had to adapt the way we do things as a club, it didn’t stop us growing with over 60 members signed up across the year, so it was certainly one to remember!
HANNAH GILES
This summer we have had a variety of activities and events planned in the diary to end the year. Ongar club nights also included popular evenings such as a dairy tour kindly hosted by the Torrance family and a very informative farrier talk hosted by the Pegrum family. With many members having an equine connection, a tour of the Essex Hunt Kennels was not something that was going to be turned down, especially as it involved puppy cuddles! Joining with Dunmow, the tour allowed us to learn about the history of the kennels and how things are run on a daily basis, as well as being a chance to see what goes on behind the scenes. With the lighter evenings we often aim for outdoor activities and events, with tug of war taster session being no exception. It was a night full of laughs as many people found themselves spending more time on the floor than upright, but despite the little training we had managed to fit in, we pulled together and displayed our best efforts at Show. Lots of Ongar members worked tirelessly throughout the weeks both leading up to the Show and after with lots of laughter, tears and memories all made along the way! This year, Ongar was allocated the role of gates and with an exceptional number of visitors to the event, as a club we had to pull together. Ongar, like many clubs, are never ones to turn down a party and this year’s Baywatchthemed Show party was no exception. There was a brilliant turnout of both old and new members bringing out the tanned beach look! Another highlight of the partying calendar was the annual County Ball. Members dressed to impress and as a club we had many tables filled. We certainly all had a brilliant time and are looking forward to the next! To end the year on a high we all gathered together at the end of June for a chilled summer evening in the garden, kindly hosted by the Gemmill family with BBQ and drinks. As life gets back to some sort of normality after a difficult year for the club, it was a chance to reflect on the club’s highlights of the year and praise those members that have pulled
together and supported the club throughout the year. We’d like to thank every single person who has helped us as at some point throughout the year, whether it be offering your knowledge for a talk or general advice and expertise in certain areas. The club wouldn’t be as successful without all those contributions, whether it be big or small! As a club we are always pleased to see new faces join our Young Farmers family! We are a mix of boys and girls ranging from 16-28 and not all from a farming background. We meet every Tuesday night and if no activity is in place, just having a sit down and a laugh over dinner in the local pub is just one of the many things we do for fun and new faces are always welcomed. If you’d like to join Ongar Young Farmers after reading this, please feel free to call or message Ellie Jemmett on 07985 245454 or via our social media pages.

Well for the final time it seems I’m back at the old typewriter. As I look out the window there’s an impending heatwave and, more importantly, an impending harvest! I imagine by the time the magazine gets around you’ll all be either very busy or very tired - either way I wish you all the best with this year’s yield.
JACK GARWOOD
AS WELL AS TOURS WE’VE HAD A FEW RIVER MEETS, TRYING OUR HANDS AT KAYAKING AND PADDLE BOARDING
What have Southminster been up to, I hear you ask? Well, let me tell you! It’s been a hectic couple of months down on the dengie and we have had all sorts of fantastic meets organised by our committee. Starting with a couple of fantastic tours; thank you to the Thorogoods for taking us round their asparagus - it’s amazing to see how much goes into those little green stalks. A couple of weeks later we were very lucky to have a tour of Wibblers Brewery, so thank you to them for another fantastic evening and we shall be sure to give the beer another go one Friday. A few weeks after that we had another tour (can you tell the weather has been nice?). This time we were kindly invited to Sarah Greens Organics - thank you for such an interesting evening and an insight into what goes on at an organic vegetable farm. As well as tours we’ve had a few river meets, trying our hands at kayaking and paddle boarding, though it turns out we are land mammals for a reason! On top of all of our events we have also had County events too - there was a Country Show, though I’m sure by now you’ve heard a little bit about that! We also had the County Ball and thank you to everyone that worked so hard to make the evening happen. A great time was had by all, and maybe a little too good a time by some people, though I’m sure Josh wouldn’t want us mentioning any names...! I think that’s about all from me and thank you all for taking the time to read my ramblings - once again, I wish you all the best this harvest and we all look forward to seeing you in the autumn. Until then,

CLUB CHAIRLADY Tamsin Sprawling
So once again, just like that, harvest is upon us. It feels like it was just days ago we were all boiling in the heat of the Young Farmers Show! Before the excitement of the Young Farmers Show, Wix had its main event of the year - Spring Ball! This year we had a fantastic turnout with Wix’s Mowers (George Howe & Oli Long) leading the pack over 30 tables in attendance. before the effects of bad fuel brought their races to an early end This, along with the lubricating effect that a free bar provides for the insertion of hands into pockets, meant we made a bumper total of £4,000 to donate to our charities! And we would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who came along and donated so generously to our club and our chosen charities.
JAMES FOXON
SINCE THE SPRING BALL AND THE SHOW WIX HAVE BEEN EXTREMELY BUSY WITH CLUB TOURS, SOCIALS, MEETINGS AND, OF COURSE, MORE FUNDRAISING
Since the Spring Ball and the Show, Wix have been extremely busy with club tours, socials, meetings and, of course, more fundraising. We were lucky enough to be invited back to Prettyfields Vineyard in Ardleigh for an evening of vineyard tours and wine tasting. This is always a very popular evening (as you would expect with free wine!) and, as always, the tour was very informative, whilst there were some... interesting (!) questions that only our members could think of asked about the wine-making process. As always, we have had our fair share of regular pub socials with a quiz at the Haywain in Little Bromley, a pizza night at the Red Lion in Manningtree and some post dog-walking pints at the Marlborough Head in Dedham. Other than our Spring Ball, Wix also made some smaller, but no less important, fundraising efforts by doing some amateur decorating work and painting the outbuildings of Emma Hood, one of our subscribers. For any other subscribers who might require our services please do get in touch, as what we might lack in practical skill we make up for with both comedy value and value for money! To bring our season to an end, as always we had the Tendring Show and our Free Booze party. This year we again helped on the second entrance gate to the Showground and had our Young Farmers tent providing lunch for our subscribers. Following this in the evening we had our free booze party in which Essex’s members were probably outnumbered by Suffolk Young Farmers! On that note I will wish all and everyone of you happy harvest and a merry start to the next Young Farmers season! Cheers,
James The before photo to Wix Free Booze (the after photo is notable in its absence!)

COMPETITIONS JAMIE MARSHALL
And in the blink of an eye, another year has gone! It has been the first year since shutting down that we have managed to pack in a full year of competitions and it has been great to again see the competitive side of all clubs. The famous mower racing was back and as popular as ever at the Young Farmers Show, which made a great watch. We also had our tug of war finals which saw a great effort from all teams. Best of luck to the next competitions rep and I hope we can fit in as many competitive games as this year. Thanks,

COUNTRYSIDE OLLIE WEAVERS
Hi everyone.
WE HAVE DECIDED TO LEAVE FARM VALUATION TO NEXT YEAR
As the Young Farmers year comes to an end, there is not a lot to report from Countryside with harvest being early this year and Young Farmers being slightly tired after an incredible Show! Therefore, we have decided to leave Farm Valuation to next year. Hopefully next year will be as good as, or better than, this year. See you all soon,
Ollie

FOLLOWING SUCH A GREAT SHOW, I HOPE THAT YOU’LL GIVE YOURSELVES THE OPPORTUNITY TO STAND BACK AND REFLECT ON THE INGREDIENTS THAT MADE IT SO SUCCESSFUL. YOU MIGHT EVEN BE ABLE TO TRANSFER SOME OF THE INGREDIENTS INTO OTHER AREAS OF LIFE

What an awesome County Show! It was amazing to see thousands of people enjoying a fantastic day back in May due to the work and commitment of Essex Young Farmers. Many of you reading this will have played a part in the success of the Show. Much of that goes on quietly behind the scenes for months in advance. It’s easy for such work to go unnoticed and yet it’s the foundation on which a good Show is built. After two years of absence, it was a huge challenge to start things from scratch. I noticed how some of you dug very deep to get those foundations in place. Huge thanks to everyone who conscientiously prepared the essential but unseen foundations of the Show. Following such a great Show, I hope that you’ll give yourselves the opportunity to stand back and reflect on the ingredients that made it so successful. You might even be able to transfer some of the ingredients into other areas of life. Many an old, wise farmer can identify the foundational skills they learned back in their twenties, in Young Farmers! This year we also celebrated the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. The Jubilee events provided many opportunities to stand back and reflect on the ingredients that have inspired the Queen’s seventy years of dedicated service. I was especially struck that at 96, she remains loyal to a vow she made on her 21st birthday. When she was of Young Farmers age she publicly announced: “I declare before you all, that my whole life, whether it be long or short shall be devoted to your service.” Perhaps she had the courage to say it because she knew she had the foundations in place to help her to see it through. She invited her listeners to join in the preparations - not the physical nuts and bolts, but the quiet unseen preparations, the preparations of mind and soul. She added: “I will not have the strength to carry out this resolution alone unless you join in it with me, as I now invite you to do: I know that your
ESSEX YOUNG FARMERS | SUMMER 2022
support will be unfailingly given. God help me make good my vow, and God bless all of you who are willing to share in it.” As many of you approach the busy harvest season, I want to assure you that my support is unfailingly given for your vital work. My prayers are with you each day; a quiet, unseen foundation to strengthen mind and soul. And when ‘all is safely gathered in’, I look forward to inviting you all to Chelmsford Cathedral on Sunday 25th September at 3:30pm. Here, in great celebration, we will give thanks for all your work in bringing the harvest to fruition. Do join us! God bless you all.
