IN CHARGE:
WAYNE BROWN WELCOME TO PARK DRIVE FOR THIS AFTERNOON’S FIXTURE AGAINST TILBURY. I’D LIKE TO START BY GIVING MARK, HIS TEAM AND THEIR SUPPORTERS A WARM WELCOME TO PARK DRIVE, ALONG WITH TODAY’S MATCH OFFICIALS. I HOPE YOU ALSO HAVE A SAFE JOURNEY HOME.
Last Friday’s result was obviously disappointing, although I feel if we had taken our chances in the opening five minutes it would have been a different outcome. We let the disappointment of missing chances creep into our game, which we can’t let happen and when we missed a chance, the ball was in our own net inside sixty seconds. However, in the second half, we did manage to score three goals and at 1-3, we missed a number of great chances – if they go in, it could’ve been a different story. In both the first half and second half, if you have 21 shots at goal in an away game that tells me we’ve done enough to win the game and we should be scoring more than three goals. Add that to the fact that we conceded some really poor goals and it was disappointing, but we are playing well enough and just need to be more ruthless to win games. Nonetheless, we obviously lost the game. We need to make great strides and change our mentality in the coming weeks. We have good players in this team and we have brought good players into the football club, but we now need to start picking up results on a consistent basis.
Tilbury side who have had a mixed start to the season, but come to Park Drive having beaten Stowmarket 4-1 on Tuesday evening. I’m sure Mark and his side will be looking to build some momentum as the season begins to pick up pace but, hopefully, not at our expense. Sam Coombes has recently signed for Tilbury and I look forward to welcoming him back to Park Drive this afternoon; Sam played a big part in last season’s FA Cup and FA Trophy runs and was also involved when we beat Leyton Orient in 2019. I appreciate that some of our results will have been disappointing for you so far this season, but please keep up your fantastic support. The boys and I really appreciate your efforts and we will need plenty more of it as we continue throughout the season. Next week we again play on Friday night, in a local derby against Witham Town away from home. I hope to see as many of you there as possible. Our next home game is on Tuesday 9th November when we welcome Aveley to Park Drive in the Velocity Trophy, a competition we will be looking to do well in this season. I hope you enjoy today’s game.
Today’s game will be like all the games in this league - an incredibly tough test against a

Wayne Brown’s side suffered their second home league defeat of the season at the hands of Bury Town. The visitors took the lead inside the opening minute with a stroke of luck. A corner from the righthand side fell to Taylor Hastings on the edge of the box and a strong deflection from his volleyed effort left Ted Collins helpless as the ball rolled into the net. Despite going behind, the Jammers were dominating

possession but struggled to break down a well-organised Bury outfit that proved tough to crack, failing to test the visiting goalkeeper despite much endeavour from Brown’s side. Collins was on hand to keep the deficit to one goal shortly before the break and Brown introduced Bryan Ifeanyi at the half-time interval. Shortly after the break, Joe Turpin saw a headed effort sail over the bar before John Gilbert forced the
goalkeeper into a smart save. Sam Cornish also saw a free-kick go wide of the upright. A crucial moment would arrive in the 74th minute when Bury were awarded a penalty for handball on Brian Moses, allowing Cemal Ramadan to step up and double the visiting advantage. Though the Jammers managed to get the ball into the net late on, it was ruled out for an earlier foul and the points headed back up to Suffolk.

CLUB NEWS BROWN ADDS BROWN-BAMPOE
TWO DEPART PARK DRIVE
Photo: Barking
Both Makhosini Khanye and Laste Dombaxe have recently departed Park Drive.
Maldon & Tiptree recently confirmed the signing of Philip Brown-Bampoe from Barking. Brown-Bampoe made just six appearances for the Blues during his month with the club, including in the Jammers’ 2-1 win over Barking last month. He has previously turned out for East Thurrock United, Romford, Redbridge and Greenwich Borough and he made his debut for Wayne Brown’s men in last week’s defeat at Aveley, playing 45 minutes.
Khayne joined the Jammers at the start of the 2020/21 season, but missed a number of games of the season that was cut short due to injury. His last appearance for the Jammers was in late September and, in total, he recorded 13 competitive appearances for the club. Meanwhile Dombaxe, who made the move to Park Drive for a second spell in the summer having spent a year away with Haringey Borough, is also moving on to pastures new. He racked up 70 appearances for the Jammers across both spells and everyone at the club wishes both players well in their futures elsewhere.
VELOCITY TROPHY
Maldon & Tiptree have been drawn at home to Aveley in the Velocity Trophy First Round after the draw was conducted earlier this week. It will be the third time that the two sides have met already this season, with the tie to be played on Tuesday 9th November at 7:45pm. If the scores are level after 90 minutes, the tie will go straight to penalties. Clubs will be permitted to use up to five substitutes.

AVELEY MALDON & TIPTREE

FRIDAY 22ND OCTOBER | THE PITCHING IN ISTHMIAN LEAGUE NORTH | ATT: 322 Maldon & Tiptree suffered their second defeat in a row with an eight-goal thriller away to Aveley. New signing Phillip Brown-Bampoe made his debut for the Jammers as he was thrown straight into the starting eleven. But, despite dominating the opening stages, the Jammers were once again punished for not taking their chances in front of goal. Aveley sprung a counter-attack as Marlon Adyakwa broke down the left, and he crossed the ball to Manny Ogunrinde who headed home from inside the six-yard box. Things went from bad to worse for the Wayne Brown’s side just moments later, as the hosts extended their lead. A corner from the right found Ryan Scott inside the box, who had shrugged off his marker and volleyed home his effort to double Aveley’s advantage. Brown-Bampoe would miss a chance from closerange shortly after and the Jammers were once again punished in the worst possible fashion. A long ball forward was allowed to bounce, landing at the feet of Alex Akrofi who caught Ted Collins by surprise and unleashed a powerful effort that landed in the back of the net to extend the lead to three goals. Maldon weren’t without chances of their own though, but their profligacy in front of goal continued as both Shomari Barnwell and Bryan Ifeanyi missed golden opportunities to ensure the Jammers had it all to do in the second half.

Whatever was said at the break had an impact, though, and Brown’s men pulled a goal back within minutes of the restart with Scott Kemp scrambling the ball home after Ifeanyi’s effort hadn’t been properly cleared. Charlee Hughes was denied shortly afterwards by the feet of David Hughes in the home goal, before Barnwell saw his headed effort blocked. Maldon were to be hit on the break again with another cruel blow shortly afterwards, with a counter-attack from the hosts leading to Akfrofi bending an unstoppable effort into the bottom corner to restore the three-goal advantage for Aveley. There would be another flurry of goals in the final ten minutes, firstly Barnwell reducing the arrears to 2-4 when he buried a cross-cum-shot from Ifeanyi in the 82nd minute. Shortly afterwards, Aveley had their fifth goal when two ex-Jammes linked up - Makhosini Khanye setting up George Sykes to make the score 5-2 from close-range with minutes left on the clock. The scoring was rounded off in the dying embers of the game, with Kemp grabbing his second goal of the night but it was no more than a consolation as Brown’s side had to make do with a 3-5 loss.

Tilbury F.C. now have concrete proof that they were formed in 1889, and competed in the Gravesend League from 1889/1890. With the Docks being the only employer of any size in the area, all the Players and Officials of the Club were Dockers, hence the adoption of the nickname, “The Dockers”, which still stands today. The aim of the Club was to gain success at Junior level via the Essex Junior Cup, and thereby to eventually bring Senior Level Football to the Town. Tilbury soon made a name at the Junior level, with successive League championships, and an appearance in the Final of the Junior Cup in 1903/04, where they were defeated after a replay by Chelmsford Arc Works. It was to be another 5 years before they reached the Final again, in 1908/09, but this time they carried off the Trophy by defeating the County’s oldest club, Saffron Walden Town. However, at this stage, support for the club was poor. Only a couple of miles down the road, Grays Athletic were now playing in Senior ranks, and Grays Thurrock United were playing Professionally in the Southern League. Most local fans were going to these clubs, and finances for Tilbury were very tight. At the end of the 1910/11 season, the club also lost it’s home ground, and the Committee decided that the club should take a break from playing while it sought a new home base. The intended short break stretched to three seasons, and was then further extended by the outbreak of the First World War, in 1914. As a result, it was not until 1919/20 that Tilbury were able to resume, this time in the South Essex

MALDON & TIPTREE vs TILBURY
League. They became Champions of that League in 1921/22, and were again a force in the County Junior ranks. The big push for advancement into Senior ranks came in 1924/25. The Title was again captured, and so was the Essex Junior Cup. As a result, in the following season, Tilbury were invited to enter the Essex Senior Cup instead, which they accepted, as they realised that some good results would really aid their cause. In 1926/27, Tilbury reached the 3rd Round of the Cup, the first Junior side to do so, and also became the first Junior club to knock a Senior club out of the Cup, when they played superbly to defeat the mighty Walthamstow Avenue 3-2. During the Summer, they were granted Senior status by the Essex F.A. Disaster almost struck however. Application was made to several Leagues but, one by one, they were all rejected, and it looked as though Tilbury were doomed. At the very last moment, the Kent League stepped in and offered them a place, which was eagerly accepted. With Tilbury remaining as one of only 5 Amateur clubs in a Professional competition, it was no surprise that they found it tough going on the field of play. Off the field, however, the 4 seasons spent in the Kent League were a success. Tilbury enjoyed their time in the League and made many friends and contacts. It was an off-field matter, though, that led to them eventually leaving the competition. The League had expanded in size greatly since Tilbury joined, and added to the difficulty of continually crossing the Thames was the end of season fixture congestion.
This meant a great many midweek matches and, with no Floodlights in those days, those games had to kick off at 4.30pm, and Tilbury nearly always had to field weakened teams due to players’ work commitments. At the end of the 1930/31 season, the Committee very reluctantly took the decision that the club would have to move on. They made an application to join the London League, one of those that had rejected them 4 years earlier, and this time were accepted.
Tilbury fought their way through to the 1st Round Proper, eventually going down 0-4 away to a Notts County side led by the legendary England centre forward Tommy Lawton. In the previous round replay, at home to Gorleston, a crowd of 5,500 had packed into St. Chad’s Road, and that is still the official Ground Record. The proceeds from this Cup run were used, a few years later, to buy the Freehold to the 13 acre site that the Ground stands on.
Tilbury stayed in the London League until 1939, when the outbreak of the Second World War led to the disbandment of most Senior Leagues. During that spell, they were twice 4th in the table, and once reached the League Cup Final, but were mostly to be found in the bottom half of the League Table. In September 1939, all Football was forced to return to a more local basis, due to Travel restrictions and Fuel rationing. Along with 9 other local clubs, Tilbury formed the War Time South Essex Combination.
In 1950/51 Tilbury moved into the Corinthian League. Apart from one League Cup Final, this was to be a barren 7 year spell, and at the end of that time they returned to the London League. The move into the Corinthian ranks had coincided with the gradual break up of the successful but ageing post-War side. The move back to the London League now coincided with the coming together of an extremely talented bunch of local young players, that brought great success in the coming seasons.
They completed the 1939/40 season in this League, but at the end of that campaign were forced to disband for the duration, when their ground was commandeered by the Army, as a site for the AntiAircraft Guns brought in to protect the Docks.
In 1957/58, Tilbury finished 3rd in the London League, but in each of the next 4 campaigns were the undisputed Champions. On 3 occasions they also captured the League Cup. Also, in 1960/61, the Essex Senior Cup was won for the first time, when Walthamstow Avenue were beaten 4-1 (aet) in the Final, just 3 weeks after tby winning thehey had won the Amateur Cup at Wembley.
Tilbury resumed in the London League in 1946/47, and then on a new home ground, the present Chadfields in 1947/48, and embarked upon a four season spell of much success and National recognition. They reached 2 successive Essex Senior Cup Finals, were 3 times League Runners Up, and were desperately unlucky to be knocked out of the F.A. Amateur Cup at the Quarter Final stage, when reduced to 9 fit men through injury. The proudest moment, though, came in the F.A. Cup. In 1949/50,
1962/63 saw Tilbury move into the Delphian League. This was to be the Winter of the “Big Freeze”, which almost totally disrupted all Sport throughout the Country for a period of almost 3 months. This was to coincide with that League’s last ever season. In 1963/64, that League joined the expanded Athenian League set up, becoming the bottom Division of a 3 Division set up. The Athenian League being
the Premier Division, the Corinthian League being Division One and the Delphian, Division Two. Tilbury were inaugural Champions of Division Two, also winning the Essex Senior Cup again. 5 seasons later, they completed the climb to the Premier Division, by winning the Division One championship. 5 seasons were spent in the Athenian Premier Division before, in 1973/74, they joined the newly formed Isthmian League Division Two, which was later re-named Division One. In 1974/75, they became the first ever winners of the Isthmian League Cup, and 12 months later were the Division One Champions. 5th place in their first Premier Division season was the best Tilbury could achieve in their 5 season stay, before being relegated back to Division One. However, during that spell, in 1977/78, Tilbury enjoyed a remarkable run in the F.A. Cup, as they started in the Preliminary Round and fought their way right through to the 3rd Round Proper, before going down 0-4 away to Stoke City. The storm clouds were already forming though, and just 2 seasons later relegation followed, amid a financial crisis so severe that the Club almost died. Since then, Tilbury have found things tough. They have suffered relegation on several occasions, but have mostly bounced back fairly quickly, but the successes of previous years have never been re-captured. In 2004/05, Tilbury finished their one season in the Southern League Division One East in rock bottom position, and were relegated to the Essex Senior League. They bounced back immediately, and earned a return to Isthmian ranks, and have managed to remain there since.
MALDON & TIPTREE vs TILBURY
13
The past two seasons were moderately successful, with two 11th place finishes in the League, and in 2008/09 Tilbury won the Isthmian League Cup and the East Anglian Cup, these were their first Trophies in 30 years. 2010/2011, with a new Manager in Paul Vaughan, and a tie-up with South Essex College Academy, saw the Club hoping to build for the future. With an inexperienced squad, the first half of the campaign was a real struggle, and by Xmas Tilbury were in real danger of relegation. However, as he gained experience, Vaughan gradually rebuilt and reinforced his squad, and the 2nd half of the campaign saw a run of results that steered the Club to safety well before the end of the season. 2011/12 saw Tilbury greatly exceed their expectations, as Vaughan’s squad stayed in and around the promotion race all season, clinching a play-off place with a game to spare. Sadly, though, it ended in extra time defeat against Needham Market. Success spread through the club as well, with the newly formed Reserves, comprised mainly of players under 21 years old, coming second in the Essex Senior Reserve League, and winning the League Cup. Unfortunately, this level could not be maintained over the next few seasons, as Tilbury continually lost some of their better players to higher level clubs, and Vaughan was continually having to rebuild his squad. The Club’s Academy proved it’s worth in this respect, as Tilbury still managed to finish in a respectable position. In October 2014, Paul Vaughan stepped down as Manager, and the Club acted quickly to appoint player Gary Henty as the new boss, and he acted quickly to appoint former Tilbury player Danny Smith as his
14
MALDON & TIPTREE vs TILBURY
assistant and another ex-”Docker” George Young as Coach. Tilbury finished that season in a comfortable lower mid-table position, but showed great improvement in 2015/16, at one time being as high as 5th, on the back of a very long unbeaten run. This included good runs in both the Essex Senior Cup and F.A. Trophy, with no fewer than 3 National League sides being defeated. However, as the season entered it’s final few weeks, their poor disciplinary record came back to bite them, with player suspensions taking their toll leading to a fall down the Table to 11th. That pattern was repeated in 2016/17. The first half of the season saw Tilbury in or just below the Play-Off places, but in the second half of the campaign a dramatic loss of form of just 3 wins from 22 games saw them plummet down as low as 17th. The season was rescued in the final month, in which Tilbury went unbeaten, winning three and drawing two of the final five League matches, climbing back up to a respectable 12th position. On the cup front, Tilbury had a fine run through to the Semi-Final of the Essex Senior Cup, before going down narrowly to National South side East Thurrock United.
October of the next season, with the Club lying second from bottom, the Management Team was changed again. Marc Harrison, a former Under 16 side Manager at Tilbury, had enjoyed a very successful spell with Basildon United, and now returned to Chadfields, bringing Liam Wallace with him as his Assistant. Making several new signings, they immediately brought about a big improvement, and took the club right up to 7th place, before a final day defeat away to the Division Champions sent them back to a final 10th place finish. 2019/20 got off to a slow start for the Club, but once they got going they rapidly climbed up the League Table. By March, Tilbury were sitiing comfortably in 4th position, and seemed certain of a place in the Promotion Play-Offs. Then, the Covid 19 virus created a Pandemic that swept across the World, and caused the Isthmian and many other Leagues to be declared null and void, with all football coming to a close. 2020/21 got off to an even better start, and Tilbury found themselves as the early season League Leaders. Once again, however, the Covid Pandemic raised it’s head. The situation across the Country deteriorated greatly and Lockdown once more came into force.
Unfortunately, Tilbury suffered a terrible run of results in October of 2017. A heavy defeat in the F.A. Trophy brought about the resignations of manager and assistant, Gary Henty & Danny Smith, plus coach George Young.
As in the previous campaign, that signalled, eventually, the abandonment of the season, and denied Tilbury what seemed a near certain place at least in the PlayOffs.
Once again, the Club turned to a former player to take over. Joe Keith returned to the club and brought in a few new signings over the next few weeks, and guided the club to a safe final position. However, this run could not be maintained, and in
With all restrictions lifted from July 12th 2021, and with most of the squad retained plus one or two quality additions, the Club are hoping that fate does not intervene again, and that they can challenge for the honours.

MALDON & TIPTREE
CLUB HISTORY
In 2009, Ed Garty took over the ownership of Maldon Town from Michael Kirkham, whilst still in charge of running Tiptree United and installed Alan Brockhouse as Maldon Town’s new chairman. Following the takeover, Colin Wallington returned for a second spell in charge of Maldon Town, leaving his post as Tiptree United manager immediately. Colin previously managed Maldon Town from 2003 until 2007, having achieved promotion in the 200506 via the play-off final. Having left Maldon in 2007, Colin went on to manage Tiptree United where he achieved promotion winning the
16
MALDON & TIPTREE vs TILBURY
Eastern Counties Division One title in the 2007/08 season. Until the conclusion of the 2009/10 season both Maldon Town & Tiptree United played their home games at Park Drive, under a ground share arrangement. In the summer of 2010, Maldon Town & Tiptree United amalgamated to form, Maldon & Tiptree Football Club, under the ownership of Ed Garty. As a result of the amalgamation, Tiptree United withdrew from the Essex Senior League, resulting in the club’s last ever fixture being a 3-1 defeat against Enfield 1893 on 24 April 2010. Maldon & Tiptree took
the place of Maldon Town in the Isthmian Division One North. Following the retirement of Colin Wallington, Assistant Manager, Brad King and Glen Knight were appointed as the clubs JointManager. As the pair’s first managerial role, the new club witnessed wholesale changes with only a handful of players remaining who finished the season with Maldon Town and Tiptree United, respectively. The 2010-11 campaign saw the new club remain in or around the play-off positions for the majority of the season, finishing in eighth
place to finish the season with sixty-three points. Despite the high turnover of players, the good standard of football was maintained and it was in the end, a disappointing end to the season, for the club to fall away in the later stages of the season when suspensions and injuries eventually took their toll to leave the club frustratingly short of the play-off positions at the end of April. The 2011-12 season, proved to not be so successful and in November 2011, King and Knight were relieved of their duties with immediate effect. Ex-Charlton professional Mike Flanagan was appointed as Caretaker Manager and remained in place until the end of the season, steering the club to a respectful mid-table finish, managing thirty-three games and finishing with a win percentage of 49.12%. At the start of the 2012-13 campaign, Ex-Stansted & Redbridge boss Terry Spillane was appointed as Manager, and Mike Flanagan departed the club. The change of management, once again brought wholesale changes with the playing squad. Ex Tiptree United manager, Jody was brought to the club as Terry’s Assistant Manager. After a fantastic and unbeaten start to the season, the club found themselves at the top of the table but an incredible run by eventual Champions Grays Athletic meant Maldon had to settle for a place in the play-offs – Terry’s side remained unbeaten until Boxing Day, when they lost away from home against local rivals Heybridge Swifts. Disappointment came in the play-off final however when they lost a two goal lead to draw with Thamesmead Town, who thenwent on to win the final,on penalties.
After a disappointing end to the previous season, Terry Spillane oversaw more wholesale changes in the playing squad, including the departure of Assistant Manager, Jody Brown. Despite the changes, Maldon finished in ninth position with seventy-six points, winning twenty-one games. More changes to the playing staff, resulted in poor start to the 2014-15 season, and the club parted ways with Spillane in September 2014, with Chairman, Ed Garty takeover as Caretaker Manager, for three games. At the end of September 2014, Alan Kimble was appointed as manager and remained in charge for the remainder of the season, however the side struggled and more changes in the playing staff occurred. Maldon finished the season in nineteenth place with only forty-nine points. During the 2014-15 season, Media Officer at the time, Richard Buckby ran a competition for supporters to vote for a club nickname, with the options The River Boys, The Marshmen, The Mudmen and The Jammers available. The vote took place in January 2015 and was featured on National Radio station, TalkSport, with the The Jammers winning the vote with over 50% and being confirmed as the clubs new nickname. Following the completion of the 2014-15 season, the club linked with Colchester United and the two clubs formed close ties, which resulted in ex Ipswich Town midfielder, David Wright being appointed as First Team Manager. Wright remained in charge until December 2015 as he was appointed Assistant Manager of Colchester United. Liam Bailey took charge of the First Team on
a temporary basis, only managing one game, which finished four-all against Tilbury on Boxing Day in 2015. Moving into 2016, exLeiston Manager, Steve Ball was appointed First Team Manager and steered the club to a respectable finish in the league table climbing to seventh place, only missing out on the play-off places by nine points. In the closed season, a change of Management at Colchester United saw Steve Ball appointed as their Assistant Manager, leaving his position of Maldon & Tiptree Manager as a result. Ex-Manchester City midfielder, Kevin Horlock was then appointed as First Team manager ahead of the 2016-17 campaign and for the majority of the season, the Jammers sat at the top of the table before slipping away to finish in second place. Horlock’s side managed to reach the play-off final, however lost to Thurrock one-nil. The following campaign was not quite as successful for Horlock, with Maldon finishing just outside the play-off places in seventh place, with sixty-nine points. After managing 112 games, Kevin Horlock departed in the closed season and was replaced by ex-Colchester defender, Wayne Brown. In Brown’s first season in charge, the 2018-19 season, the Jammers finished in second place and reached the play-off final, but lost on penalties against local rivals, Heybridge Swifts. The 2019-20 season was one to remember for the club, but for the right and wrong reasons. The club achieved great things in the Emirates FA Cup. Having reached the First Round proper of the competition, Maldon beat League Two side, Leyton Orient away from home, taking over 600

fans to the home of The O’s, with the goals coming from Danny Parish and a superb solo goal from Jorome Slew. In the second round proper, Maldon were drawn against Football League side, Newport County with the game being shown live on National Television– with the Jammers only beaten by the League Two side, with a goal in stoppage time, with the game finishing 1-0. A record attendance of 1876 was recorded. However, the 2019-20 season will also be remembered for the wrong reasons. After impressive performances on the field, the Jammers found themselves top of the Isthmian Division One North, thirteen points clear with four games in hand, when disaster struck. With a global pandemic declared, as a result of Coronavirus, the league competition was formally abandoned on 26 March 2020, with all results from the season being expunged, and no promotion or relegation taking place to, from, or within the division. The club were denied a chance of promotion and forced to remain in the Division One North for the 2020-21 season.
ED GARTY STEPPED DOWN AS CHAIRMAN IN OCTOBER 2020 Following the disappointing end to the 2019-20 season, Wayne Brown remained in charge of the club and wholesale changes in the playing squad occurred again, with a number of the previous season’s squad securing transfers to clubs higher up the football pyramid. The Jammers were dealt a big blow in October 2020 when owner and Chairman Ed Garty stood down from his position with immediate effect, ending a challenging ten years at the helm. After a period of uncertainty for

the football club, General Manager Ron Dangerfield was confirmed as the new Chairman, with Richard Cowling taking ownership of the football club. Just like the 2019-20 season, the 2020-21 campaign was terminated with promotion and relegation denied for all the sides competing in the Division One North. However, prior to the curtailment the Jammers had reached the Emirates FA Cup First Round for the second successive season, this time losing to Morecambe 1-0 in front of the television cameras. Brown’s side also achieved their longest ever run in the Buildbase FA Trophy, eventually losing to Gloucester City. The Jammers were only able to play in five league games, finishing in third place before the season was curtailed. Heading in to the 2021/22 season, Wayne Brown remains in charge of the first team and is now the club’s longest-serving manager, holding the record for the most games managed in charge of Maldon & Tiptree Football Club.
