WAYNE BROWN

WELCOME TO PARK DRIVE FOR THIS EVENING’S VELOCITY TROPHY FIXTURE AGAINST AVELEY. I’D LIKE TO START BY GIVING DANNY, HIS TEAM AND THEIR SUPPORTERS A WARM WELCOME TO PARK DRIVE, ALONG WITH TONIGHT’S MATCH OFFICIALS. I HOPE YOU ALSO HAVE A SAFE JOURNEY HOME. Tonight is Danny’s first game in charge of Aveley, having taken over on Sunday following the departure of Keith Rowland. Although I’m sure Danny will be looking to put his own stamp on his new team, we have already played Aveley twice this season and unfortunately lost both games, so we know that tonight will be a tough test. Having won our last two games, the boys should come into this match with confidence. I was very pleased on Friday night with their performance against Witham - their attitude was spot on and they were rewarded with three goals and our second clean sheet of the season. As a team and squad, we must look to build on these results and continue our positive momentum. Having lost several players recently, we have a small group now and the lads are really sticking together, possibly benefiting from being a close-knit environment. This is a competition that we as a team and club would like to do well in. Due to the pandemic, the competition never started last season and, should we progress in the competition, it will give the team an opportunity to test themselves against teams from the division above. We have done well in those fixtures over the last two or three seasons.   On Saturday, we travel to Dereham for our longest away trip of the season. Dereham have had a great start to the season, so again it will be a tough challenge. I hope to see as many of you there as possible. Please keep up your brilliant support.   I hope you enjoy tonight’s game. Wayne

FRIDAY 5TH NOVEMBER | THE PITCHING IN ISTHMIAN LEAGUE NORTH | ATT: 298 Maldon & Tiptree made it back-toback wins with an explosive victory over Witham Town last Friday. On a unique playing surface, the Jammers started on the front foot and created the game’s first chance. Charlee Hughes broke free from his marker and cut the ball back to the edge of the box, however his attempted pass just evaded Scott Kemp and the hosts were able to clear. At the other end, Ikpemwinoghena Yakubu sent his effort wide and the game remained goalless. The Jammers continued to create chances with Malachi Napa seeing an effort cleared off the line, Hughes watched his lobbed effort sail over the cross bar and Bryan Ifeanyi had a fierce effort saved by Madden in the home goal. In the 18th minute, Maldon were rewarded for their positive start. A corner from the right was recycled well by the Jammers and, having found its way back to Sam Cornish on the righthand side, his inviting cross bounced across the box to HUGHES at the back post who toe-poked the ball into the top corner for his third goal in two games.

MALDON & TIPTREE vs AVELEY

Looking to extend their lead, Maldon continued to create chances and Napa once again had a shot blocked before Scott Kemp blazed an effort over the bar following a smart turn inside the box. Despite dominating the first half, the half-time lead was only a single goal. At the start of the second half, the game continued in the same pattern, with the Jammers dominating whilst the hosts struggled to penetrate the Maldon defence. The chances continued to come and go with Hughes forcing Madden into another save, whilst Ifeanyi sent an effort rocketing over the bar from the edge of the box, having skipped past several defenders. In the 65th minute, Maldon had their second goal. Napa dribbled his way down the right-hand side and delivered a pin-point cross into the box, straight onto the head of KEMP whose looping header over Madden nestled into the back of the net to double the advantage over his former side. Soon after the second goal, the Jammers had their third and it came from another set-piece, this time Cornish providing the assist. A short one-two from a corner allowed Cornish to deliver a cross to the far post where captain Martyn STOKES lept higher than all those around him, planting a bullet header into the bottom corner. Maldon continued to create chances for more goals, with Joe Turpin’s effort sailing over the bar before Harry Taylor’s effort was deflected past the goal in the dying embers for the game to finish 3-0.

CLUB NEWS AL-AMIN IS BACK

Young full-back Al-Amin Kazeem has returned to Park Drive on loan from Colchester United. Kazeem previously featured for the Jammers in the 2019/20 season, playing a key part in the club’s FA Cup run to the second round proper. Since returning to Colchester, Al-Amin suffered a prolonged setback following a serious knee injury. During his first spell with the club, the attack-minded left-back registered 36 appearances, one goal and a number of assists, the most memorable being against Royston Town in the Fourth Qualifying Round of the FA Cup.

TAYLOR MOVES ON

Young defender Harry Taylor has played his last game for Maldon & Tiptree. Taylor joined the Jammers in the summer following his release from Charlton Athletic and has been a regular for Wayne Brown’s side throughout the campaign so far, making a total of 13 appearances and recording two assists in the process. Taylor has been travelling to Park Drive from Surrey and recently has received an opportunity much closer to home, which he has decided take on - everyone at the club would like to thank Harry for his services whilst with the club and we all wish him the very best for the future.

STOKES REACHES 50 Club captain Martyn Stokes racked up his 50th appearance for Maldon & Tiptree last week during Friday’s 3-0 win at Witham Town. Having joined mid-way through the 2019/20 season, Stokes made his debut against Enfield Town in the Buildbase FA Trophy on 23rd November 2019. The commanding central defender was named as club captain at the start of last season, leading the Jammers to the FA Cup First Round and FA Trophy Third Round - the club’s longest-ever FA Trophy run. So far this season, Stokes has appeared 12 times, recorded two assists and netted once, marking his milestone appearance with the Jammers’ third goal of the evening last Friday. Everyone at the club would like to congratulate Martyn on this achievement and we look forward to the next fifty appearances for the club.

U7 PUMAS vs WILVALE RANGERS SUNDAY 31ST OCTOBER

Report: Aaron Omand

On a blustery afternoon, the Pumas welcomed Wilvale Rangers Knights to Park Drive for the reverse fixture from matchday two. The Pumas came out on top that day after a battling performance from the Knights. The late kick off of the day was certainly one worth waiting for with 14 goals shared between the two teams. Maldon & Tiptree Pumas kicked off with the wind behind them hoping to gain a strong foothold in the game, however it was Wilvale who led with only two minutes gone. This was certainly a wake-up call for the Pumas who then began to assert themselves on the Knights and equalised in the fourth minute with a Halloween screamer. Travelling down the right-hand side at pace with a defender for close company, Luke unleashed an absolute missile across the goalkeeper and into the top left-hand corner - an early goal of the season contender. Just a minute later, 1-1 became 2-1 with Henry B rifling a shot into the top-right to edge the Pumas in front. The Pumas began to now dictate the pace of the game, and with some neat cross-field passes started to penetrate the Knights’ armour. Strong running into

10

the Knights’ half from Thomas led to the goalkeeper producing one of many fine stops, but this one could only be parried as far as Billy who managed to turn and steady himself to tuck away the third. Halloween truly struck in the second quarter after what was a treat from the Pumas in the first. Knights began to trick the Pumas and forced them into a horror-fest of defending. Four sloppy goals sandwiched a Pumas corner that was whipped into the near post by Thomas. Ronnie squeezed his shot in at the near post to prevent a second-quarter massacre. Half-time arrived and Pumas were 5-4 down after a spooky turn around! The third quarter saw the Pumas begin much more brightly and three unanswered goals gave them some breathing space, and thus they began to play with confidence. Henry T was sent through twice on

GALLEYWOOD EAGLES vs U11 PUMAS SUNDAY 31ST OCTOBER

A wet and windy Halloween and the Pumas arrived in Ghoulleywood ready to clip the wings of the Eagles. With only nine players available, it was always going to be a monster battle but, as always, the boys came ready to rumble. The opening exchanges were even, Galleywood with two early opportunities ably batted away by Percy who stood tall to keep honours even, then a breakaway and a fiendish piece of skill from Christian tied the Eagles in knots and tucked home for 1-0 Pumas. Playing uphill first half, the game became a midfield battle with captain Bertie and super Tristan digging in with grit and determination to win the ball for the Pumas, then a breakaway for George who ghosted past two defenders to cross for Tristan to double the score, burying the ball into the net. The Eagles rallied and Harrison raced in to cover the defence. Then another attack, this time Reece standing strong like Frankenstein to see away the danger - awesome work, lads! Then a bit of magic

Report: James Goldstone

in the middle from Bertie into George, who dribbled through the defence from the halfway line to finish coolly into the bottom corner for 3-0. Sensing blood, Tristan smashed home for 4-0 at half-time. A few tactical tweaks at half-time and Dexter slotted into defence, with Reece trying out midfield and both boys looking accomplished in their changed roles - really impressive the way they adapted to something different. Then Tom on the left with pace and power proved to be a real menace to the opposition defence, squaring for Christian, finding George whose first-time, left-footed drive fizzed into the corner: 5-0.

goal and showed superb composure to bear down on the Knights’ goal and coolly place them past the goalkeeper on 27 and 29 minutes. Then, just before the whistle on 30 minutes, the Knights’ goalkeeper passed out centrally towards the halfway line with Luke beating the Knights’ player to the ball and sending the ball back first time into an empty Knights’ net from just inside their half. Isabella in goal ensured the Pumas kept their breathing space in the fourth quarter with some

The Pumas continued to grow in strength and stature and unselfish play from George with a lay-off to Tom, who popped up at the back post like a bobbing apple, saw Pumas smash home for 6-0 with Tom’s first league goal for the club - well done, Tom. Then it was Christian’s turn, and again the midfield magician had super glue on his boots as he weaved in for his second of the game and 7-0. The battle had become a war(lock) and Tristan epitomised our work ethic, grabbing his hat-trick and pump(k)in the air with delight. Finally, it was George again who raced through like a bat out of hell to smash home for his hat-trick and Pumas’ ninth. Percy was called into action before the final whistle though as Pumas tired, making two great saves to preserve the clean sheet. Man of the Match for Christian, two assists and two goals - magnificent, but then they all were. Pumas played for each other and with a smile, plenty of tricks and nine treats. Go Pumas!

assured goalkeeping. Scooping up any through balls and bravely going in at the attacker’s feet allowed the Pumas to extend the gap. Player of the Match Henry B added to his tally for the day to put the Pumas 8-5 in front. There was time for one more with Louie snatching the ball from the Knights’ attacker on the halfway line before playing the sweetest through ball to Henry T who smashed home his hat-trick for the day with two minutes remaining. The tricky Halloween fixture ended 9-5 to the Pumas who have now won three on the bounce.

MALDON & TIPTREE vs AVELEY

Formed in 1927, Aveley played in local leagues until 1939 when club activities were suspended during the war until 1945. In 1946 the club was reformed and joined the Thurrock Combination. Aveley twice won the Essex Junior Cup, firstly in 1948 before retaining it the following year. Aveley gained Senior League status in 1949/50 and were elected into the London League, Division One. They were champions in 1951/52, also moving from Lodge Meadow to Mill Field during the campaign and promptly being nicknamed the Millers. They were champions again in 1954/55, earning them election to the Delphian League in 1955/56 where they competed until 1962/63 with little success. 1963/64 saw Millers join the Athenian League with full membership of the Football Association granted the following season. Arguably Aveley’s most successful campaign was 1970/71, reaching the FA Cup first

round as well as the quarter finals of the FA Amateur Cup, whilst going on to win the Athenian League as well. Aveley were elected to the Isthmian League in 1973/74, competing without success in Division One until they were relegated to Division Two North at the end of the 1985/86 season. The Millers did however achieve two cup successes during this time - the Essex Thames-Side Challenge Trophy was won in 1979/80 and the Hornchurch Charity Cup in 1982/83. The 1989/90 campaign was a memorable one for the Millers. Promotion back to Division One was gained with a tremendous end of season run-in to finish second to Heybridge Swifts by two points. This was followed by a 3-0 victory over Premier Division St. Albans in the final of the AC Delco (League) Cup, making Aveley the first team from the lowest division to win this competition. After this, the club slipped

down to Division Three and cup successes were limited to appearances in the finals of both the East Anglian Cup and the The Essex Thames-Side Challenge Trophy in 1997/98.

A poor league season in 2006/07 was again compensated for by winning the Essex Thames-Side Challenge Trophy for the second time in just three seasons.

The 1999/00 season started well with Aveley remaining unbeaten in the league until Christmas. A turn in fortunes saw them slip, however, and they would eventually finish ninth. This was followed by a sixth-placed finish in 2000/01.

After a disappointing start to the 2007/08 campaign, November saw the arrival of Rod Stringer as manager and fortunes turned. The Millers posted a string of impressive results together to finish the season in a mid-table position. 2008/09 saw the foundations that were laid the previous season bare their fruit, with Aveley winning the Ryman League Division One North title on the last day of the season in dramatic fashion away to East Thurrock United. In what was a tense finish to the season, the Millers set a club record of 11 straight away league wins and Rod Stringer was duly judged as the Manager of the Season for the division.

2001/02 was a real rollercoaster of a season that saw the club finish third behind Hornchurch and champions Croydon Athletic, winning promotion to Division 1 North. An excellent season for the Millers in 2002/03. Good runs in the FA Cup and Bryco Cup were capped off with an appearance in the Essex Senior Cup final. This did not go the Millers’ way, though, with Chelmsford City beating Aveley 5-0. The club progressed to the FA Cup third qualifying round that season too, eventually losing 2-0 to Canvey Island. A good run-in saw the Millers finish sixth in their league campaign. The 2003/04 season saw the club eventually finish in 14th place, whilst also matching the previous season’s performance by reaching the final of the Essex Senior Cup. This time a muchimproved display saw them go down 3-1 to local rivals Thurrock. The final game of the season was another cup final, this time in the East Anglian Cup, which saw a visit to Spalding United. This also finished in a 3-1 defeat for the Millers. 2004/05 was a disappointing season for the Millers’ maiden campaign in the Southern League, the club finishing in 15th place. Compensation, however, came in the form of the Essex Thames-Side Challenge Trophy where Aveley beat Romford 1-0 in the final at the Mill Field, Simon Thomas scoring the only goal of the game. Another difficult season followed, on and off the pitch, as Millers ended the 2005/06 season with their third manager, Steve Browne, steering them just clear of the relegation places.

2009/10, Aveley’s first season in the Isthmian Premier Division, saw the Millers enjoy a great finish to the season with 12 wins from the last 14 games. It was a run of form that lifted the club into third place and set up a home semi-final play-off tie against Boreham Wood. Unfortunately, it was one step too far, and a 1-0 defeat saw the end of a fantastic season. Rod Stringer departed for Braintree Town at the end of that campaign, taking with him his management team and the whole playing squad. Subsequently, a difficult season was to be endured with Aveley needed a 3-2 win at Hastings on the final day to enable the club to stave off relegation by virtue of a reprieve. It was only a short-lived reprieve, though, with 2011/12 serving up much of the same and leading to relegation just a year after that final day escape. Justin Gardner was appointed as boss in February 2012 and began moulding a squad to push for an immediate return, going on to spend the entirety of 2012/13 in the play-off spots - the promotion tilt would eventually end at the hand of the Jammers, with Maldon & Tiptree beating Aveley in the play-off semi-finals. After many years of trying for a new stadium, 2013/14 heralded a new era for Aveley. Planning permission was finally granted in March 2014 for a new state-of-the-art facility to be built with work beginning on the new Parkside site in July 2016. The stadium would take a year to complete, and Terry Spillane was the man in charge to lead Aveley out at their new stadium in August 2017, opening with a visit from Dulwich Hamlet. Spillane would part company with the club within weeks though, and he was replaced by James Webster from Brightlingsea who had lifted the Regent up four steps in seven seasons.

A RECORD FA TROPHY RUN ENDED AT NOTTS COUNTY IN 2020

2018/19 would see the Millers miss out on promotion, finishing as runners-up to Bowers & Pitsea only to lose out in the play-off semi-finals once again, this time to Heybridge Swifts. That impressive form continued into the 2019/20 campaign too, with Aveley sat in second place again at the curtailment of the season due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Millers also enjoyed a club-record FA Trophy run, reaching the quarter finals where they would bow out to Notts County in front of a record crowd for an Aveley fixture, with 530 travelling fans making up part of the Meadow Lane crowd of 4,893.

MALDON & TIPTREE

CLUB HISTORY

In 2009, Ed Garty took over the ownership of Maldon Town from Michael Kirkham, whilst still in charge of running Tiptree United and installed Alan Brockhouse as Maldon Town’s new chairman. Following the takeover, Colin Wallington returned for a second spell in charge of Maldon Town, leaving his post as Tiptree United manager immediately. Colin previously managed Maldon Town from 2003 until 2007, having achieved promotion in the 200506 via the play-off final. Having left Maldon in 2007, Colin went on to manage Tiptree United where he achieved promotion winning the

16

MALDON & TIPTREE vs AVELEY

Eastern Counties Division One title in the 2007/08 season. Until the conclusion of the 2009/10 season both Maldon Town & Tiptree United played their home games at Park Drive, under a ground share arrangement. In the summer of 2010, Maldon Town & Tiptree United amalgamated to form, Maldon & Tiptree Football Club, under the ownership of Ed Garty. As a result of the amalgamation, Tiptree United withdrew from the Essex Senior League, resulting in the club’s last ever fixture being a 3-1 defeat against Enfield 1893 on 24 April 2010. Maldon & Tiptree took

the place of Maldon Town in the Isthmian Division One North. Following the retirement of Colin Wallington, Assistant Manager, Brad King and Glen Knight were appointed as the clubs JointManager. As the pair’s first managerial role, the new club witnessed wholesale changes with only a handful of players remaining who finished the season with Maldon Town and Tiptree United, respectively. The 2010-11 campaign saw the new club remain in or around the play-off positions for the majority of the season, finishing in eighth

place to finish the season with sixty-three points. Despite the high turnover of players, the good standard of football was maintained and it was in the end, a disappointing end to the season, for the club to fall away in the later stages of the season when suspensions and injuries eventually took their toll to leave the club frustratingly short of the play-off positions at the end of April. The 2011-12 season, proved to not be so successful and in November 2011, King and Knight were relieved of their duties with immediate effect. Ex-Charlton professional Mike Flanagan was appointed as Caretaker Manager and remained in place until the end of the season, steering the club to a respectful mid-table finish, managing thirty-three games and finishing with a win percentage of 49.12%. At the start of the 2012-13 campaign, Ex-Stansted & Redbridge boss Terry Spillane was appointed as Manager, and Mike Flanagan departed the club. The change of management, once again brought wholesale changes with the playing squad. Ex Tiptree United manager, Jody was brought to the club as Terry’s Assistant Manager. After a fantastic and unbeaten start to the season, the club found themselves at the top of the table but an incredible run by eventual Champions Grays Athletic meant Maldon had to settle for a place in the play-offs – Terry’s side remained unbeaten until Boxing Day, when they lost away from home against local rivals Heybridge Swifts. Disappointment came in the play-off final however when they lost a two goal lead to draw with Thamesmead Town, who thenwent on to win the final,on penalties.

After a disappointing end to the previous season, Terry Spillane oversaw more wholesale changes in the playing squad, including the departure of Assistant Manager, Jody Brown. Despite the changes, Maldon finished in ninth position with seventy-six points, winning twenty-one games. More changes to the playing staff, resulted in poor start to the 2014-15 season, and the club parted ways with Spillane in September 2014, with Chairman, Ed Garty takeover as Caretaker Manager, for three games. At the end of September 2014, Alan Kimble was appointed as manager and remained in charge for the remainder of the season, however the side struggled and more changes in the playing staff occurred. Maldon finished the season in nineteenth place with only forty-nine points. During the 2014-15 season, Media Officer at the time, Richard Buckby ran a competition for supporters to vote for a club nickname, with the options The River Boys, The Marshmen, The Mudmen and The Jammers available. The vote took place in January 2015 and was featured on National Radio station, TalkSport, with the The Jammers winning the vote with over 50% and being confirmed as the clubs new nickname. Following the completion of the 2014-15 season, the club linked with Colchester United and the two clubs formed close ties, which resulted in ex Ipswich Town midfielder, David Wright being appointed as First Team Manager. Wright remained in charge until December 2015 as he was appointed Assistant Manager of Colchester United. Liam Bailey took charge of the First Team on

a temporary basis, only managing one game, which finished four-all against Tilbury on Boxing Day in 2015. Moving into 2016, exLeiston Manager, Steve Ball was appointed First Team Manager and steered the club to a respectable finish in the league table climbing to seventh place, only missing out on the play-off places by nine points. In the closed season, a change of Management at Colchester United saw Steve Ball appointed as their Assistant Manager, leaving his position of Maldon & Tiptree Manager as a result. Ex-Manchester City midfielder, Kevin Horlock was then appointed as First Team manager ahead of the 2016-17 campaign and for the majority of the season, the Jammers sat at the top of the table before slipping away to finish in second place. Horlock’s side managed to reach the play-off final, however lost to Thurrock one-nil. The following campaign was not quite as successful for Horlock, with Maldon finishing just outside the play-off places in seventh place, with sixty-nine points. After managing 112 games, Kevin Horlock departed in the closed season and was replaced by ex-Colchester defender, Wayne Brown. In Brown’s first season in charge, the 2018-19 season, the Jammers finished in second place and reached the play-off final, but lost on penalties against local rivals, Heybridge Swifts. The 2019-20 season was one to remember for the club, but for the right and wrong reasons. The club achieved great things in the Emirates FA Cup. Having reached the First Round proper of the competition, Maldon beat League Two side, Leyton Orient away from home, taking over 600

fans to the home of The O’s, with the goals coming from Danny Parish and a superb solo goal from Jorome Slew. In the second round proper, Maldon were drawn against Football League side, Newport County with the game being shown live on National Television– with the Jammers only beaten by the League Two side, with a goal in stoppage time, with the game finishing 1-0. A record attendance of 1876 was recorded. However, the 2019-20 season will also be remembered for the wrong reasons. After impressive performances on the field, the Jammers found themselves top of the Isthmian Division One North, thirteen points clear with four games in hand, when disaster struck. With a global pandemic declared, as a result of Coronavirus, the league competition was formally abandoned on 26 March 2020, with all results from the season being expunged, and no promotion or relegation taking place to, from, or within the division. The club were denied a chance of promotion and forced to remain in the Division One North for the 2020-21 season.

ED GARTY STEPPED DOWN AS CHAIRMAN IN OCTOBER 2020 Following the disappointing end to the 2019-20 season, Wayne Brown remained in charge of the club and wholesale changes in the playing squad occurred again, with a number of the previous season’s squad securing transfers to clubs higher up the football pyramid. The Jammers were dealt a big blow in October 2020 when owner and Chairman Ed Garty stood down from his position with immediate effect, ending a challenging ten years at the helm. After a period of uncertainty for

the football club, General Manager Ron Dangerfield was confirmed as the new Chairman, with Richard Cowling taking ownership of the football club. Just like the 2019-20 season, the 2020-21 campaign was terminated with promotion and relegation denied for all the sides competing in the Division One North. However, prior to the curtailment the Jammers had reached the Emirates FA Cup First Round for the second successive season, this time losing to Morecambe 1-0 in front of the television cameras. Brown’s side also achieved their longest ever run in the Buildbase FA Trophy, eventually losing to Gloucester City. The Jammers were only able to play in five league games, finishing in third place before the season was curtailed. Heading in to the 2021/22 season, Wayne Brown remains in charge of the first team and is now the club’s longest-serving manager, holding the record for the most games managed in charge of Maldon & Tiptree Football Club.
