GOOD EVENING AND WELCOME TO PARK DRIVE. WHILST WE ARE UNABLE TO WELCOME SUPPORTERS TO TONIGHT’S GAME, I WOULD LIKE TO EXTEND A WARM WELCOME TO PAUL AND HIS GLOUCESTER SIDE, ALONG WITH TONIGHT’S MATCH OFFICIALS.

After our second game in a week, having not played for four weeks, I was delighted with our result last Tuesday. It was a great football match to be involved in, with Bognor Regis playing attractive football. I thought in the first half we were a nearly team without reaching our full potential. After going behind early in the second half, I was very pleased with how the boys responded and showed great character. They never gave up; they kept battling until the end and showed real belief. Everyone really bought in to what we tried to achieve and it paid off. Again, I think it was our fitness levels that helped us over the line as the lads did not stop running until the final whistle. On a personal note, I was pleased for Sham who has spent a fair bit of time on the bench this season, however with six goals in his last six games he is taking his chance really well. Whilst I am disappointed the fans are not with us again this evening, as I have said before, I understand and it is something, we all just need to get our heads around. Hopefully we will be able to welcome you all back in the New Year when it is safe to do so. This evening will be another tough challenge against a side two divisions higher in the pyramid than us. League tables do not lie and they are spearheading their table at the moment after a great start to the season. It will be a tough challenge, but my team have relished these challenges before and I hope tonight will be no different. If the boys continue to believe in themselves and the team, we will give ourselves a great chance of progressing. As this is now our last game before Christmas and the end of a strange year, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you and your families a Merry Christmas and a happy, hopefully more positive New Year. I would like to thank you all for your support this season and I look forward to seeing you all back at Park Drive in what is hopefully a brighter 2021. Enjoy the game, Wayne

TUESDAY 15TH DECEMBER | BUILDBASE FA TROPHY SECOND ROUND | ATT: 184

BILLY CRACKNELL DRAWS THE JAMMERS LEVEL Wayne Brown’s side completed another impressive victory over a side higher up the pyramid, as they came from behind to overcome Bognor Regis Town. After no football in just over four weeks, Maldon came in to their second game in under a week against another opposition from the Isthmian Premier Division in Bognor Regis Town. With Maldon remaining in Tier 2 until Wednesday 16 December, a maximum attendance of 400 spectators were allowed to watch

and see if the Jammers could spring another cupupset. Manager, Wayne Brown made three changes from the side who beat Enfield Town last week, with Billy Cracknell returning to the side, whilst Makosini Khanye and Shomari Barnwell were restored to the starting eleven. Bognor had a positive start to the season coming in to this fixture, scoring goals for fun as they look to achieve promotion out of the Isthmian Premier, just

like last week’s opponents, Enfield. With both sides renowned for their attractive playing style, this game was set to be a cracker and it lived up to its potential from the first minute until the last. On an inch-perfect playing surface, both sides began the encounter with the ball on the floor attempting to perfect their slick attacking moves. After being stuck in traffic on route to Park Drive, it was the visitors who almost carved out the first opportunity of the match, however a last ditch tackle from Joe Turpin, ensured the Jammers were able to clear the dangers and keep the visitors at bay. As the game flowed from end to end, the Jammers had their first opportunity of the evening as Kojo Awotwi broke free of the defence, however Goalkeeper Amadou Tangara was on hand to make the save. Next up to try his luck, was Captain, Martyn Stokes as his fierce effort from twenty yards out was deflected for a corner. McNamara in the Maldon goal seemed to be continuing his run of impressive performances, as he produced another save to deny the visiting attack, in a one-on-one opportunity, with the odds in favour of the away side. However, McNamara was on hand to make the save and eventually win his side a goal-kick. On the stroke of half-time, there was very nearly an embarrassing own-goal for the away side - a stray back-pass caught Tangara off-guard and luckily for Bognor, the pass then just wide of the goal, scraping the post for a home corner. After an end-to-end and competitive first half, Bognor came out of the interval and stung the Jammers more or less from the kick off. After a winning a quick corner, there was a goal-mouth scramble in the Jammers box and Regis’ captain, Harvey White was on-hand to bundle the ball home to give the visitors the lead with forty-three minutes to play. Whilst the Jammers could have been shell-shocked at going behind so early, it appeared to have the opposite effect as the Jammers sprung in to life once more and found the belief that has served them so well this season. As the home side began to dominate the football, the visitors seemed to be struggling with heavy legs and potentially, the long journey taking its toll. As Maldon broke down the right hand side, a slight tweak in formation from Manager Brown, allowed Andre Hasanally to find a pocket of space and he attacked the defence. Hasanally, fed Cracknell who skipped past two defenders, entering the penalty area

SHOMARI BARNWELL NETTED A LATE WINNER before unleashing a powerful effort under Tangara and in to the back of the net, to put his side back on level terms. As the Maldon midfield continued to dominate, chances continue to be created as Barnwell found himself in on goal, however the Referee’s Assistant had his flag up for offside. It’s fair to say though, that Bognor were never out of the contest though and they continued to look dangerous on the counterattack, against a resolute Maldon defence who looked determined to continue their impressive defensive record this season. Searching for the winning moment, Wayne Brown made three changes in quick succession, with Scott Kemp, Sam Coombes and Adam Vyse being introduced in place of Awoti, Bradley McClenaghan and Hasanally. With another penalty shoot-out looming, the Jammers had other ideas. As Coombes found space on the right hand side, he unleashed a pin-point cross in to the box, straight on to the head of awaiting striker, Barnwell. Barnwell jumped highest above his defenders, to plant a superb header in to the far corner of the net to ensure the Jammers booked their place in the Third Round of the FA Trophy for the first time in the clubs history and to complete another impressive cup upset.

WHEN DID YOU PLAY FOR THE JAMMERS AND WHO WAS IN CHARGE? I joined the club in December 2015 until the end of the 2017 season. I had three brilliant managers during my spell with the club, they all had the desire to take the club forward. David Wright brought me in, followed by Steve Ball and finally, Kevin Horlock. BEST PLAYER YOU PLAYED WITH WHILST WITH MALDON? For me, this is an easy one. It has to be Matt Lock. ‘Locky’ was such an inspiration to all the players, on and off the pitch. I used to love his pre-game huddle chat before each match. Special mention to Rhys Henry though, who assisted the majority of my goals. WHAT IS YOUR BEST MEMORY, WHILST PLAYING FOR THE CLUB? It has to be Bury Town, away. We won that day, I scored two and I think I may have missed penalty. I have scored a lot of goals over the years, but my volley from long range on that day was by far my best.

“I HAD THREE BRILLIANT MANAGERS DURING MY SPELL WITH THE CLUB, THEY ALL HAD THE DESIRE TO TAKE THE CLUB FORWARD”

WHAT IS YOUR WORST MEMORY WHILST PLAYING FOR THE JAMMERS? In the space of two weeks, dislocating my thumb and then breaking a bone in my foot! AWAY FROM PARK DRIVE, YOUR MOST ENJOYABLE MOMENT IN FOOTBALL? Winning promotion with Needham Market and still holding on to being their all-time leading goalscorer. WHAT TEAM ARE YOU PLAYING FOR NOW? OR IF YOU’VE STOPPED PLAYING, WHAT ARE YOU UP TO, THESE DAYS? I now enjoy coaching a local team to me, Bacton United Under 13s, but most of all I am really enjoying spending lots of time with family and friends.

ISTHMIAN LEAGUE STATEMENT:

THE SEASON REMAINS PAUSED AS INDICATED PREVIOUSLY THE ISTHMIAN LEAGUE BOARD HAS MET FOLLOWING THE LATEST GOVERNMENT REVIEW AND THEY HAVE UNANIMOUSLY AGREED TO CONTINUE WITH THE PAUSE OF THE 2020/21 SEASON.

Since the initial survey on the 2nd December the infection rate has deteriorated in the geographical footprint of their Member Clubs, which has resulted in a much larger number of Isthmian League Clubs being placed in Tier 3. In reaching this decision the Board considered several factors such as the lack of income from secondary spend revenue, the reduced

attendances at Tier 3 Clubs and more importantly, the duty of care the League has to Players, Club Officials, Volunteers and Supporters during this current pandemic. The Board will continue to monitor the situation in line with the Government review dates and/or any decision that allows Government grants to become

available to Member Clubs. The Board has not yet set a formal re-start date, but Clubs will give at least 14 days’ notice of the recommencement of the 2020/21 season allowing them preparation time to stage League matches. It is also noted that the Southern League are taking a similar approach with their Member Clubs.

The club was established in 1883 as Gloucester, they became Gloucester City in 1902, but were briefly known as Gloucester YMCA from 1910 to 1925, before returning to their previous name. The club plays in the National League North. Prior to that, it spent a record 70 years within the Southern Football League from 1939 until 2009. The club secured promotion after a playoff final win against Farnborough, gaining promotion to the National League North. In July 2007, the club was considerably affected by the 2007 United Kingdom floods, which significantly affected Gloucestershire and left the Meadow Park stadium under 8 feet (2.4 m) of water. The flooding meant that the club was in exile away from Gloucester for 13 years. During the club’s exile period away from the City it played at Forest Green Rovers’ the New Lawn in Nailsworth for one season in the Southern League. The club then moved to Cirencester Town and spent two seasons there, culminating in promotion to the Conference North. Cirencester’s stadium was deemed not up to Conference standards, so the club had to move again and this time over to fierce rivals Cheltenham Town’s Whaddon Road stadium.

MALDON & TIPTREE

CLUB HISTORY In 2009, Ed Garty took over the ownership of Maldon Town from Michael Kirkham, whilst still in charge of running Tiptree United and installed Alan Brockhouse as Maldon Town’s new chairman. Following the takeover, Colin Wallington returned for a second spell in charge of Maldon Town, leaving his post as Tiptree United manager immediately. Colin previously managed Maldon Town from 2003 until 2007, having achieved promotion in the 2005-06 via the play-off final. Having left Maldon in 2007, Colin went on to manage Tiptree United where he achieved promotion winning the Eastern Counties Division One title in the 2007/08 season. Until the conclusion of the 2009/10 season both Maldon Town & Tiptree United played their home games at Park Drive, under a ground share arrangement.

18

MALDON & TIPTREE vs GLOUCESTER CITY

In the summer of 2010, Maldon Town & Tiptree United amalgamated to form, Maldon & Tiptree Football Club, under the ownership of Ed Garty. As a result of the amalgamation, Tiptree United withdrew from the Essex Senior League, resulting in the clubs last ever fixture being a 3-1 defeat against Enfield 1893 on 24 April 2010. Maldon & Tiptree took the place of Maldon Town in the Isthmian Division One North. Following the retirement of Colin Wallington, Assistant Manager, Brad King and Glen Knight were appointed as the clubs Joint-Manager. As the pair’s first managerial role, the new club witnessed wholesale changes with only a handful of players remaining who finished the season with Maldon Town and Tiptree United, respectively. The 2010-11 campaign saw the

new club remain in or around the play-off positions for the majority of the season, finishing in eighth place to finish the season with sixty-three points. Despite the high turnover of players, the good standard of football was maintained and it was in the end, a disappointing end to the season, for the club to fall away in the later stages of the season when suspensions and injuries eventually took their toll to leave the club frustratingly short of the play-off positions at the end of April. The 2011-12 season, proved to not be so successful and in November 2011, King and Knight were relieved of their duties with immediate effect. Ex-Charlton professional Mike Flanagan was appointed as Caretaker Manager and remained in place until the end of the season, steering the club to a respectful mid-table finish, managing thirtythree games and finishing with a win percentage of 49.12%.

At the start of the 2012-13 campaign, Ex-Stansted & Redbridge boss Terry Spillane was appointed as Manager, and Mike Flanagan departed the club. The change of management, once again brought wholesale changes with the playing squad. Ex Tiptree United manager, Jody was brought to the club as Terry’s Assistant Manager. After a fantastic and unbeaten start to the season, the club found themselves at the top of the table but an incredible run by eventual Champions Grays Athletic meant Maldon had to settle for a place in the play-offs – Terry’s side remained unbeaten until Boxing Day, when they lost away from home against local rivals Heybridge Swifts. Disappointment came in the play-off final however when they lost a two goal lead to draw with Thamesmead Town, who thenwent on to win the final,on penalties. After a disappointing end to the previous season, Terry Spillane oversaw more wholesale changes in the playing squad, including the departure of Assistant Manager, Jody Brown. Despite the changes, Maldon finished in ninth position with seventysix points, winning twenty-one games.

Mudmen and The Jammers available. The vote took place in January 2015 and was featured on National Radio station, TalkSport, with the The Jammers winning the vote with over 50% and being confirmed as the clubs new nickname. Following the completion of the 2014-15 season, the club linked with Colchester United and the two clubs formed close ties, which resulted in ex Ipswich Town midfielder, David Wright being appointed as First Team Manager. Wright remained in charge until December 2015 as he was appointed Assistant Manager of Colchester United. Liam Bailey took charge of the First Team on a temporary basis, only managing one game, which finished four-all against Tilbury on Boxing Day in 2015. Moving into 2016, ex-Leiston Manager, Steve Ball was appointed First Team Manager and steered the club to a respectable finish in the league table climbing to seventh place, only missing out on the playoff places by nine points.

More changes to the playing staff, resulted in poor start to the 201415 season, and the club parted ways with Spillane in September 2014, with Chairman, Ed Garty takeover as Caretaker Manager, for three games. At the end of September 2014, Alan Kimble was appointed as manager and remained in charge for the remainder of the season, however the side struggled and more changes in the playing staff occurred. Maldon finished the season in nineteenth place with only forty-nine points.

In the closed season, a change of Management at Colchester United saw Steve Ball appointed as their Assistant Manager, leaving his position of Maldon & Tiptree Manager as a result. Ex-Manchester City midfielder, Kevin Horlock was then appointed as First Team manager ahead of the 2016-17 campaign and for the majority of the season, the Jammers sat at the top of the table before slipping away to finish in second place. Horlock’s side managed to reach the play-off final, however lost to Thurrock one-nil. The following campaign was not quite as successful for Horlock, with Maldon finishing just outside the play-off places in seventh place, with sixty-nine points.

During the 2014-15 season, Media Officer at the time, Richard Buckby ran a competition for supporters to vote for a club nickname, with the options The River Boys, The Marshmen, The

After managing 112 games, Kevin Horlock departed in the closed season and was replaced by ex-Colchester defender, Wayne Brown. In Brown’s first season in

charge, the 2018-19 season, the Jammers finished in second place and reached the play-off final, but lost on penalties against local rivals, Heybridge Swifts. The 2019-20 season was one to remember for the club, but for the right and wrong reasons. The club achieved great things in the Emirates FA Cup. Having reached the First Round proper of the competition, Maldon beat League Two side, Leyton Orient away from home, taking over 600 fans to the home of The O’s, with the goals coming from Danny Parish and a superb solo goal from Jorome Slew. In the second round proper, Maldon were drawn against Football League side, Newport County with the game being shown live on National Television– with the Jammers only beaten by the League Two side, with a goal in stoppage time, with the game finishing 1-0. A record attendance of 1876 was recorded. However, the 2019-20 season will also be remembered for the wrong reasons. After impressive performances on the field, the Jammers found themselves top of the Isthmian Division One North, thirteen points clear with four games in hand, when disaster struck. With a global pandemic declared, as a result of Coronavirus, the league competition was formally abandoned on 26 March 2020, with all results from the season being expunged, and no promotion or relegation taking place to, from, or within the division. The club were denied a chance of promotion and forced to remain in the Division One North for the 2020-21 season. Following the disappointing end to the 2020-21 season, Wayne Brown remained in charge of the club and wholesale changes in the playing squad occurred again, with a number of last season’s squad securing transfers to clubs higher up the football pyramid.
