ood evening to everyone reading these notes and tuning in for tonight’s game against Oldham Athletic. It has certainly not been an easy week for anyone connected to the football club, but as a coach, it’s been my job to try and cut out all the outside noise and keep the lads focused on the task at hand winning games of football. Looking back at Morecambe, obviously losing 3-1 was disappointing. We knew the conditions weren’t going to make it a pretty game but in terms of effort, and endeavour, the lads gave it everything. However, there’s no escaping that we lacked quality in the final third and, as a team, have conceded three goals. I felt that at half-time we deserved our lead but we were twice undone by lapses of concentration where two people didn’t do their jobs and it ended up costing us. As a group we’ve talked about becoming much stronger when the opponent has the ball in difficult areas - and that’s something we need to put right quickly. I believe that we had a good chance of getting a positive result at the weekend but we threw it away through naivety at the back. We now have back-to-back home games and tonight is an opportunity to start climbing the table but we know it will be another tough test. We have done our homework on Oldham (just like we do with every team we play) and we’re aware of their strengths and we’ve been working on ways we think we might be able to get at them. They have had some decent results recently, and in Harry Kewell, they have a good manager as well. Despite everything that’s been going on, my message to the lads has been clear: just focus on tonight’s game because that’s ultimately the job of a professional sportsman. We are going through a difficult period at the moment and, honestly, there isn’t an easy fix. I believe that the only way out of it is through hard work, graft and determination - I’ll be looking for all of those characteristics in our performance tonight. Enjoy the game, Ben Davies

WE ARE GOING THROUGH A DIFFICULT PERIOD AT THE MOMENT AND, HONESTLY, THERE ISN’T AN EASY FIX. I BELIEVE THAT THE ONLY WAY OUT OF IT IS THROUGH HARD WORK, GRAFT AND DETERMINATION 03

KICK IT OUT OF FOOTBALL.

MACCA CAPTAIN’S COLUMN:

Evening all. Firstly, I hope you all had a good Christmas and made the best of the situation. Obviously a lot has happened in the last week or so, and a manager leaving always brings a period of uncertainty, however as professional footballers, we have to remain just that, professional, and control the things that we can control on the pitch. Ultimately for us as players, we know that we need to start winning games of football, no matter who’s in charge or whichever month it is. We know that winning games as professional players is our priority. This is obviously our last game before the New Year, and I think one of the reasons we all love this game is because of how quickly things can change. I think back to 12 months ago and we weren’t having a good spell, but then we ended up having a really good three months pre-covid. There’s no reason we can’t do that again this season, hopefully starting tonight. Happy New Year, hopefully we’ll get to see some of you in 2021! Macca

MARINERS TRUST

W

elcome to this evening’s game against Oldham Athletic. It will be another tough match particularly given their impressive away form so far this season which has seen six wins from nine.

Obviously, it was a major shock to us all last week to hear of the resignation of Ollie. As we said in our statement, we would like to thank him for the way he embraced the fans and really understood just how much the Club means to us all. We are convinced that he would have turned things around with January dealings, but we will never know now. We fully respect his reasons for leaving but it was a shame we were not able to convince him to at least consider the fans desire for change. At the time of writing, we haven’t appointed a new manager yet and so assuming the team tonight is going to be looked after by Dave and Ben, we wish them both the best of luck. We are all fully behind you in these difficult circumstances. Indeed, doing programme notes even two days before the game nowadays risks them being out of date by the time the fans get to read them! The potential takeover is obviously the key topic of conversation and it reached fever pitch over the last few days with the various statements issued. We have to say we were very disappointed to see this whole thing played out in public in this way especially as both parties agreed to conduct negotiations behind closed doors. We were hoping to be able to help facilitate discussions, but this has proved almost impossible in the circumstances. Nevertheless, we continue to work behind the scenes and still remain hopeful that an agreement can be reached despite the public statements to the contrary. During this process, our own role has come into question, particularly in relation to our two places on the board and the difficult situation that sometimes puts us in. We are absolutely open to that debate, after all, we are a members society. We have therefore agreed to conduct a ballot with the members for them to guide us on what they want in the future. We are enlisting the help of the FSA in terms of them independently laying out the pros and cons of having board representation and also with the logistics in terms of cut off dates etc. We expect to issue the ballot next week with a result the end of the week after. This has been a very difficult few weeks for the Trust Board and throughout this we have just been trying to bring the parties together in the best of interest of the Club. We will continue to do that until it is clear to us that it is not achievable. Enjoy the game, UTM The Mariners Trust Board

LUKE HENDRIE

IN THE SPOTLIGHT L

uke Hendrie has become the second player this season to reach 100 appearances for The Mariners.

The resolute right back reached the milestone at the weekend, two years after joining permanently from League One Shrewsbury Town. The Yorkshireman originally signed on loan at the beginning of the 2018-19 season but a string of strong and assured performances at the back persuaded the then Town boss Michael Jolley to sign Hendrie on a two-and-ahalf year deal. For those who didn’t know, Luke comes from a footballing family. His dad is John Hendrie, the former Bradford, Leeds, Middlesbrough and Barnsley forward, his great uncle Paul used to play for Halifax and Stockport in the 80s and he’s also related to the ex Villa and England midfielder Lee Hendire as well. Hendrie joined Manchester United as a teenager but after his release in 2013, the promising defender spent the next five years with Derby County and Burnley, playing for their development sides. He gained experience on loan at Hartlepool United, York City, Kilmarnock and Bradford City before he was signed by Paul Hurst for Shrewsbury Town and featured for The Shrews as they pushed for promotion to the Championship in 2017-18. Hendrie initially chose a move to Blundell Park in August 2018 to work with his former Burnley U23’s coach Michael Jolley, but since then the defender, who was also appointed Vice Captain last season, has established himself as one of the first names on the Town team sheet.

CAREER:

Manchester United, Derby County, Burnley, Hartlepool United (Loan), York City (Loan), Kilmarnock (Loan), Bradford City (Loan), Shrewsbury Town, Grimsby Town (Loan).

By John Lyons, executive editor, The Football League Paper

It’s hard to believe we’re fast approaching the halfway point in the league season, isn’t it? The games have come so thick and fast that there’s hardly been time to breath. Some clubs have had a ball, others have had a nightmare. But counting chickens or fearing the worst is not a great idea. I was reminded of that when I was flicking through our post-Christmas edition of The FLP from last year. Those were the carefree days when fans packed into stadiums and everyone took their football for granted. If only we’d known… Anyway, looking back at that slightly faded paper, it’s interesting to note that the three teams in the Championship relegation zone were Wigan, Barnsley and Luton. Five months later, only Wigan went down of that trio.

NORTHAMPTON WON THE LEAGUE TWO PLAY-OFFS HAVING BEEN NINTH AT THE HALFWAY MARK The two sides who bagged the automatic promotion places? Coventry and Rotherham. The Sky Blues, who went up as champions, were in ninth place after Christmas, nine points behind Wycombe. Eventual runners-up Rotherham were fifth.

Barnsley memorably stayed up on the last day of the season (in July!) with a last-gasp win at Brentford, while the Hatters finished 19th after Nathan Jones returned to the club and sparked a revival. The teams to go down with Wigan? Charlton and Hull. The Addicks were a safe-looking 17th in that December 29 edition, seven points above the drop zone, while Hull were miles clear of the drop zone.

In League Two, Swindon, Exeter and Crewe occupied the top three places just ahead of the turn of the year. Swindon and Crewe did go on to achieve promotion via points per game, but Exeter missed out – and were replaced in the automatic places by… neighbours Plymouth.

The Tigers were only just in the bottom half of the table (13th) and a whopping 12 points above the dotted line. The departures of star players Jarrod Bowen (to West Ham) and Kamil Grosicki (to West Brom) at the end of the January window knocked them for six and set in motion a slide which eventually saw them slump to the bottom of the table.

After Christmas the Pilgrims were a lowly eighth in the table, just outside the play-off places. Who won the play-offs? Northampton, who were ninth at the halfway mark.

However, it’s not all doom and gloom. Grant McCann’s men have had an excellent start to the League One campaign this term and topped the table before a few recent setbacks.

While some of the teams in the promotion places midway through did go on to win promotion and some in the relegation zone did ultimately fall through the trapdoor, it all goes to show that anything is still possible.

In the third tier a year ago, Wycombe and Ipswich led the way. The Chairboys eventually went up via the play-offs, but Ipswich slumped to 11th place on points per game.

And after the year we’ve just had, promotion and relegation isn’t the be-all and end-all, is it? As we enter 2021, let’s really enjoy our football, even if it is a bit different than usual.

CONOR McALENY

Skipper Piergianni has been a near ever-present in the Latics’ defence this season. The 28-year-old has made 23 appearances and has also weighed in three goals - two of those coming in his last four games. The no-nonsense centre back moved to Boundary Park in the summer following a successful loan spell with the Latics last term. Prior to his switch, he’d spent two years with Salford City and helped Graham Alexander’s side reach the Football League. Piergianni is Peterborough born and he began his career with his hometown club back in 2009. He gained experience on loan with Spalding Town and Altrincham as a young defender before signing for Stockport permanently in 2011. After a short spell with Corby Town, he spent three seasons with Boston United where he clocked up more than 100 appearances. In 2017 Piergianni played in Australia for South Melbourne.

Left back Cameron BorthwickJackson joined Oldham on a free transfer in the summer from Manchester United. The 23-yearold had been at Old Trafford since he was six and he made 14 appearances for the club during the 2015-16 season under Louis van Gaal. Since then, the former England youth international has spent time on loan at Wolves, Leeds, Scunthorpe, Tranmere and Oldham prior to his release from his boyhood club. Borthwick-Jackson spent the first half of last season on loan at Tranmere but barely featured for Rovers. However, following his loan switch to the Latics back in January, the athletic full back became a regular in Oldham’s defence prior to the pandemic and did enough to persuade Harry Kewell to offer him a one-year deal at Boundary Park. Borthwick-Jackson has featured 20 times for the Latics so far this season.

Former Everton striker Conor McAlney has been in great form for the Latics this season. The 28-year-old has found the back back of the net 13 times in just 21 games and is quickly becoming a bit of a talismanic figure for his new club. The Scouser joined Oldham in the summer following his release from Fleetwood Town where he made 70 appearances during his three years in Lancashire. Before this, McAlney had been on the books at Everton - progressing through the youth system and breaking through into the first team during 2011-12. Despite the early promise at Goodison Park, the talented stiker spent time on loan at Scunthorpe, Brentford, Cardiff, Wigan and Oxford (where he scored 10 in 14 starts) before joining Fleetwood in 2017. While at Fleetwood, McAlney also had loan spells with Kilmarnock and Shrewsbury last season.

Career: Peterborough United, Spalding United (Loan), Altrincham (Loan), Stockport County, Corby Town, Boston United, South Melbourne, Salford City, Oldham Athletic (Loan).

Career: Manchester United, Wolves (Loan), Leeds United (Loan), Scunthorpe United (Loan), Tranmere Rovers (Loan), Oldham Athletic (Loan).

SIX

OF THE BEST

18TH FEBRUARY 1956 TO 24TH FEBRUARY 1967

vs OLDHAM ATHLETIC By John Kirk

TOWN 6-2 OLDHAM 11TH NOVEMBER 1972

Between these two dates, we played Oldham eight times home and away... and won the lot! We started off that sequence with a 5-1 win (Bob Crosbie hat-trick included), and continued it after 8 and a half years with ANOTHER 5-1 victory (FOUR goals from George McLean and one from Matt Tees!). For the record, the scores were... 5-1, 5-1, 3-1, 3-1, 4-1, 3-1, 1-0, 1-0!

Once we had got into Division Three under Lawrie Mac, we had dreams of continuing our rise and rise. A 2-1 victory at Boundary Park in September was followed on 11th November by a 6-2 win at BP! Not much of an armistice – especially from Stuart Brace who bagged 4 of them. The weeks afterwards were full of FA Cup hopes and eventually that defeat at Coventry in Round 4... and it was NEVER a penalty! We Mariners fans have long memories you know!

18TH FEBRUARY 1933 AND 2ND SEPTEMBER 1933... 5-1S AGAIN! Yes, we scored five against Oldham twice in succession in our two Division 2 seasons in the 1930s. That second season we were due to be promoted to Division One (the Premier League of the era). Charlie Craven scored a hat-trick in the first of those games, and you’ll hardly need me to tell you that Pat Glover scored a hat-trick in the second one.

TOWN 0-0 OLDHAM 18TH APRIL 1981

The previous game, we had lost 5-1 to West Ham in Cleethorpes. Until that point we had dreams... dreams of going straight from Division 4 to Division 1 in just three glorious seasons. The draw against Oldham was probably when we realised that it wasn’t going to happen. George had said that we’d be a few points short of promotion a month or so earlier, and so it turned out to be. But it’s good to dream.

TOWN 4-1 OLDHAM 15TH AUGUST 1970

It’s always good to get a season off to a great start, even if you’re in the bottom division. I’m sure that once we’d stuck four past Oldham in the opening game of the 1970-71 season that we were dreaming of a return to Division 3. And for three whole days we could believe. Then we took the A46 to Lincoln and were brought down to earth by our local rivals!

TOWN 0-2 OLDHAM 2ND MAY 1998

Town fans will know why I have put this defeat in a story about Six of the Best! It was the last League game of the season. The next matches were the play off semis against Fulham (1-1 in London, 1-0 at our place) and then that play-off final against Northampton where we won 1-0. Where did that ref get the six minutes of added time from?

CONNECTIONS:

KEVIN MOORE

Grimsby-born Kevin Moore was the lynchpin of The Mariners defence during his 11-years at Blundell Park but also had a short spell with Oldham in 1987. The eldest of the three Moore brothers to play for Town in the 70s and 80s, Kev was a winger before being converted into a dynamic defender with a leap like a salmon! Town boss Tommy Casey thrust Moore into first team action in 1976 and the teenager soon became a regular in The Mariners back four operating at left back and centre half. Moore was an ever-present as The Mariners won promotion from Division Four and only missed five games in 1979-80 as Town won the Third Division title. The defender’s ability to lead by example meant he was the stand-out choice to replace Joe Waters as captain in 1984 and he looked to be on course to become the club’s new record appearance holder. However, with Town struggling financially in 1987, Moore was allowed to sign for Oldham Athletic for just £100,000. In total, he played 477 times for The Mariners and scored 36 goals. Although he was instantly given the captain’s armband at Oldham, Moore only stayed at Boundary Park for half a season before Southampton activated a clause in his contract which allowed him to join a First Division club. Moore became skipper of The Saints and went on to make almost 150 top-flight appearances over a seven-year period. The Grimsby lad even managed to net a trademark header in Southampton’s 1992 ZDS Final defeat to Forest at Wembley. Aged 36, Moore joined Fulham and played for The Cottagers for two seasons before retiring. Tragically, aged just 55 years-old, the former defender passed away in 2013 after suffering from Pick’s disease for a number of years. Those fortunate enough to see Moore in action, will remember him as one of the club’s finest defenders.

John Kirk selects his favourite Mariners XI of the 1960s.

L

ike most Town fans, supporting the Mariners was all about family. My mother called me in every Saturday by the time I was three to listen to the wireless “To see how Town have done!” We lived in Spalding at the time, and she wasn’t referring to Spalding Town.

We moved to a village near Scunthorpe, and from there I travelled for my first games at Blundell Park (and at the Old Showground if Town played there) with my uncle, but in late 1960, we moved to Louth! Louth had a special bus to BP every home game – 4 shillings if I remember correctly – and so every home match, ticket bought at Parkers for the Lincolnshire Road Car, and the magic became a regular feature. There was one time in the mid-sixties when the school first XI unusually played on a Saturday afternoon. I was torn… play football, or watch Town? Did that tear me apart! Whilst I started the regular pilgrimage to BP, there were some of the best players I have ever seen don the black and white stripes (or the white shirts and red shorts in the early sixties). Let’s see if you agree with my selection from those days?

CHARLIE WRIGHT Goalkeeper Charlie brought a smile to people’s faces the moment he walked on to the pitch, to be greeted by a hail of citrus fruit! It wasn’t that he was just a great goalie in all situations, but that he was a showman with it, as only someone completely confident in his own abilities can be.

GRAHAM TAYLOR Left back You can’t NOT have one of the games best managers over decades, plus an England manager to boot, in our team. What’s more he married a young lady from my old village, and as many Town fans know, he was one of the best and funniest story-tellers in the game. And of course, he was more than a decent left-back!

JIMMY THOMPSON

BRIAN CLIFTON

Right back Difficult choice between Jimmy Thompson and Dave Worthington. Maybe Dave will be in Town’s team of the seventies? Jimmy was always cultured, and creative, hard tackling, hard running, tremendous “engine.”

Right half The half-back line swapped around a great deal in the sixties, so you can take this selection along with the next two and change them round however you wish. Brian Clifton was a player who was “cultured” in everything he did. He never seemed hurried, but was always in the right place at the right time.

30

KEITH JOBLING

RON RAFFERTY

Centre-half Keith deservedly held the record for most appearances for a long time. Not exactly how you would imagine most centre halves – he was lightly built but deceptively strong in the tackle, and a great header of the ball. Captain for hundreds of games.

Centre-Forward If you are second only to Pat Glover in Town’s scoring annals, then you have more than earned your place in the team of teams. If you wanted a 20-goals a year striker, the Ron was your man (though one year he “only” scored 19!). 4 goals in a season wasn’t bad, was it? Man United almost signed him from us. Thankfully they didn’t, and he gave us years of pleasure.

RON COCKERILL Left Half “Cannonball” Cockerill was frequently the second centrehalf alongside Jobling, but when he came within shooting distance of the opponents goal – i.e. nearer than 60 yards – the cry would go up “Shoot!” Often Town’s penalty taker, and typically blasted the ball past the unfortunate custodian. He was concussed when heading a ball coming out of the clouds with snow on it, and after a few games out he returned. The ball was pumped up, Ron went for it, he staggered a bit, the BP faithful held their breaths... and Ron ran off laughing!

DAVE BOYLEN Inside left Dave has always been a great club man. And a great little inside forward. People remarked on his ability and height similarity to a Town legend of the 20s and 30s – Jackie Bestall. Mighty Atom, was the moniker sometimes attached to Bestall, and Dave earned the same accolade. Few players have personified what Grimsby is about more than Dave.

JOHNNY SCOTT Outside right Johnny Scott joined us from Man Utd, and had all the tricks in the book. He’d beat the opposing left back with his dribbling, then go back to beat him again just for the fun of it! His inch-perfect crossing to the head of Ron Rafferty defined the goals of the late fifties and early sixties. Once he had the ball at his feet, the crowd EXPECTED a cross, and expected Ron Rafferty to net it! The only Town player to appear in the World Cup finals whilst on our books.

BRIAN HILL Outside left I was tempted to go for Freddie Jones, one of the fastest players I saw in the sixties. Freddie would get control of the ball and race round in a huge circle, leaving the opposition in his wake … and he was a great gentleman, frequently retrieving the ball for the opposition. However, I’m going for Brian Hill as the outside left of the 1960s. I’m not sure he could have beaten Freddie in a race, but it would have been close, though Brian seemed to drift past defenders with a slight dip of the shoulders, and he scored some great goals and great hat-tricks.

MATT TEES Inside right No contest! Sir Matt could score with both feet and with his head. Absolutely deadly anywhere in the box. His slight frame didn’t look capable of going up against the typical burly centre-halves of the time, but he could score before they even knew he had passed them.
