IN CHARGE:
WAYNE BROWN WELCOME BACK TO PARK DRIVE FOR THIS AFTERNOON’S LEAGUE FIXTURE AGAINST ROMFORD. I’D LIKE TO GIVE DEREK, STEVE AND THEIR TEAM A WARM WELCOME, ALONG WITH THEIR SUPPORTERS AND TODAY’S MATCH OFFICIALS. I HOPE EVERYONE HAS A SAFE TRIP HOME AFTER THE MATCH.
Today’s match is the second of three successive home games and on Tuesday against Heybridge, I was pleased with our performance overall, especially with how we defended. We were first into every tackle and we showed a real physical edge which helped us progress to the next round. I was delighted for Tommy who again made some impressive saves and recorded his first clean sheet since joining the group. I know we missed chances and I think it is fair to say that we deserved to win the game by more than one goal. Today, Romford will come to Park Drive and I am sure will be confident in their approach and will provide a different test for us. As we move towards a busy part of the season, with games coming thick and fast, it is important we now look to build momentum as we approach the business end of the season. Chelmsford City visit Park Drive on Tuesday and I hope to see you all here, but please keep up your support. It’s been magnificent so far this season and it is pleasing to see our attendances continuing to grow at home and away games. I hope you enjoy the game. Wayne

TUESDAY 7TH DECEMBER | VELOCITY TROPHY SECOND ROUND | ATT: 223 A single goal from Shomari Barnwell in the seventh minute was enough for the Jammers to overcome local rivals Heybridge Swifts in the second round of the Velocity Trophy. Manager Wayne Brown was without Shad Ngandu (cuptied), whilst Emmanual Martins returned at full-back in place of Frankie Terry who had been recalled from his loan stint by Colchester United. Olu Oluwatimilehin made his first home appearance following his move from Barking. On a strange evening, a late pitch inspection was succesfully passed before a floodlight failure resulted in the kick-off being delayed by 30 minutes. Once the game finally got underway, the Jammers started brightly and capitalised on their early dominance. A ball from Charlee Hughes flashed across the six-yard box and evaded everyone but Scott Kemp. The Jammers’ forward recycled the ball on the left and crossed to Phil Brown-Bampoe who teed up Shomari BARNWELL who only needed one touch as he curled an unstoppable effort into the bottom left corner to give Brown’s side the lead. Looking for more goals, the Jammers continued to push forward and Aaron Williams-Bushell was giving his opposing full-back a tough time. He continued to skip past Joe Claridge with ease and set up a brilliant chance for Oluwatimilehin, who unfortunately blazed his strike high and wide. Hughes was next to see a chance go begging, as he was unable to find a way past Callum Chafer who made a smart save in the visiting goal.

Whilst Maldon pushed forward, Tommy DixonHodge still had to be alert at the other end and made an amazing save as the interval approached, to keep his clean sheet in tact. The young-shot stopper leaped to his lefthand side and stretched out one hand to tip a powerful strike over the crossbar. Hughes had one more chance before the half-time break for the Jammers after Williams-Bushell had once again created the opportunity, but a Swifts defender was on hand to make the block. Buoyed by their first half dominance, the Jammers continued to attack in the second half in search for a second goal, but Chafer was having a fine evening for the visitors. Martins broke free down the left and delivered an inviting cross onto the head of Barnwell whose effort looked destined for the back of the net, but the visiting stopper appeared from nowhere to make an outsanding save, keeping his side in the game again. Moments later he was at it again, this time somehow scrambling to keep the ball out of his net after Martins’ cross was deflected goalwards. Brown then made a triple change with Bradley McClenaghan, Malachi Napa and Bryan Ifeanyi being introduced in place of Kemp, BrownBampoe and goalscorer, Barnwell. Ifeanyi was straight in to the action, skipping past Claridge before watching his effort fly just wide of the far past. Brown then made a fourth change, as Lordon Akolbire made a welcome return from injury to take the place of Williams-Bushell, who had produced another fine performance. As Heybridge struggled going forward, the Jammers had more chances to extend their lead. First, Sam Cornish presented Ifeanyi with another chance, one-on-one with the goalkeeper, but he curled his effort wide. Lastly, as the game entered stoppage-time, Martins set up Hughes once more but the Maldon front man was unable to keep his effort down as it sailed over the crossbar. Overall, it was a dominant performance from the Jammers who could have easily won by a bigger margin, however a solid defensive showing resulted in their progression to the next round of the competition and a first Maldon & Tiptree clean sheet for Dixon-Hodge.

MALDON & TIPTREE vs ROMFORD
This is the third Romford Football Club, both their predecessors having competed at some point in the Southern League, and each time having been defunct for fourteen years before the name was revived. All three versions have had their moments, although the present model has yet to emulate previous achievements on the national stage. The original club was founded in 1876 and reached the last six of the F A Cup. After some success at local level the club folded during the First World War. For a while there was no senior football at all in Romford, but the situation was addressed in 1929 when local figure Tom Macpherson, later to become M P for the area, took charge of re-forming the Club after a public meeting at the Corn Exchange, which was so well attended that the crowd spilled on to the street outside, to the annoyance of the police. The new Club moved into the local Brooklands stadium, which was bought by the Club when it became a limited company in the mid-1930s, possibly the first Amateur club to do so. After two seasons in the London League, Romford joined the Athenian League in 1931 and between 1935 and 1938 won two championships and twice reached the semi-finals of the F A Amateur Cup. After the Second World War the Club competed in the Isthmian League and finished third in each of their first two seasons. The highlight of this era was reaching the Final of the F A Amateur Cup in 1949, losing 1-0 to Bromley in front of 95 000 spectators in the first Final to be held at Wembley. However
fortunes then plummeted and after finishing in the bottom three five times in a row, Romford took the bold move of turning professional and joined the Southern League in 1959 Promotion was achieved at the first attempt and, after a near miss in 1963-64 when Boro finished fifth the enormous Championship shield came to Brooklands in 1967. Romford were perennial (and unsuccessful) applicants for membership of the Football League but, apart from third place in 1970-71, never looked like repeating their title success and eventually were relegated in 1975. Boro’s failure to make it into the Football League had left huge debts, but only when the ground was sold did the extent of the Clubs problems come to light. 90% of the proceeds of the sale of Brooklands were eaten up in debt repayments and tax, leaving barely £60 000 to finance a new stadium, and the 1977-78 season was spent playing home matches at borrowed grounds - indeed the last match, at home to Folkestone & Shepway, was eventually played at Folkestone. Romford Football Club closed down in 1978 and the site of the unfinished stadium in Oldchurch Park became Romford Ice Rink. Appropriately, it was at the Ice Rink that the first meeting took place in February 1992 to gauge interest in reviving the Club. Over 150 people attended to hear the ideas of Dave Howie, and very soon the Club was formed, a ground-share arranged with Hornchurch and senior status granted from the Essex F A. To have achieved so much so soon owed much to what had gone before,
and in view of the importance and significance of such a heritage to the success of the new club, it was inevitable that it would adopt the traditional blue and gold colours and Boro nickname, despite the local council having since become the London Borough of Havering. The Club took their place in the Essex Senior League and with Lyndon Lynch at the helm, finished in ninth place. This was followed by fourth place in 1993-94 and third the season after. The highlight of this third season was the Clubs first entry into the F A Cup, when Boro made national headlines by beating Grays Athletic and Hayes, and almost took St Albans City to a replay before going down 1-0 at Clarence Park in a match that was featured on Grandstand. The summer of 1995 was all change, as Dave Howie stepped down and Lyndon Lynch chose to move on. With an almost entirely new committee and considerably improved financial backing, Boro started again from scratch, moving in with Essex Senior League rivals Ford United and appointing as joint managers the local dream ticket of Donal McGovern and Alan Marson, a partnership with a quite phenomenal record at this level and higher. They brought several of the squad with whom they had won the previous seasons Isthmian League Division Three championship at Collier Row, and proceeded to win the Essex Senior League with a record total of 91 goals from just 28 games. This was accompanied by success in the League Cup, beating Southend Manor 2-0 in the Final at Burnham Ramblers F C, and another run to the Third Qualifying Round of the F A Cup, again losing at St Albans by 3-1 after leading at half-time. There was another period of upheaval for Romford in 1996, as the agreement with Ford was terminated and Boro finished the
season sharing with Collier Row at Sungate. A merger was arranged between the two clubs and the new club, known as Collier Row & Romford, took Rows place in Division Two of the Isthmian League. A run to the last sixteen of the F A Vase contributed to a fixture backlog that meant Boro fell so far behind that they had to play exactly half their league fixtures in March and April. However promotion was secured with three games to play and Boro overtook Leatherhead at the top of the table for the first time going into the final match, where a 3-0 win at home to Hungerford Town brought the championship to Sungate. Boro finished the League season unbeaten away from home, went 29 games without defeat and lost only twice. With McGovern and Marson moving on, former reserve team manager Les Whitton was promoted to become first team manager in the summer of 1997. The Club reverted to its original title and the following season the name of Romford appeared in the Fourth Qualifying Round of the F A Cup for the first time since 1975-76. Boro also reached the quarter-finals of the League Cup and won the East Anglian Cup, recovering from 2-0 down to beat Aveley 3-2 at Sungate in the Final. Boro finished seventh in Division One, top scorers with 92 goals. The tail end of the season had been largely overshadowed by concern over the Clubs future, and the eventual defeat of a takeover bid resulted in the departure of several Club personnel and the entire first team management, leaving a committee almost entirely handpicked from the terraces, while Dave Howie returned after three years away. Reserve team manager Steve Wheeler took over the first team and managed to keep the side in the top half of the table on a reduced budget, but at the end of
January chairman John Goodwin left to take over at Bishops Stortford, taking Wheeler and several players with him. First team coach Amin Levitt was immediately appointed manager, and plenty of fresh blood was quickly recruited with reserve and youth team players also being promoted. The response was magnificent and the team remained unbeaten in the league for several weeks, however just when things were settling down again another bombshell came when the Sungate ground was closed by the League, due to the deterioration of the pitch and other facilities. Romford’s last six home games had to be played at other grounds, including Chesham and Hendon, and even had to play three nights running in the final week of the season as Boro finished a creditable tenth. Some consolation was found in the reserve and youth sides, the latter making Romford the only non-League club to reach the Third Round proper of the F A Youth Cup. The Club also won the Umbro Fair Play Award for Division One. Following a number of delays, Sungate B grading was finally reinstated on the opening day of the 1999-2000 season. The return to Sungate had a profound effect on the team as they won ten of their next thirteen games and reached the Fourth Qualifying Round of the F A Cup, a 6-0 win over Congleton Town earning Non-League Team of the Week honours in The Sun. However the Club soon found itself fighting relegation and Sungate went through another period of closure while urgent electrical work was carried out, requiring another three games to be played elsewhere. The relegation threat was finally put to rest with three matches remaining, and Boro were more than happy with a final position of nineteenth. Still the summer was not without its problems as the clubhouse suffered major fire

damage, and complications arising from that and the subsequent delay to the completion of other rebuilding works prevented any matches from taking place at Sungate for a long time. The constant uncertainty finally took its toll and Amin Levitt resigned in October to be replaced by John Bennett, but after a brief revival came a further shock in December as Boro were suspended by the Ryman League with no return to Sungate in sight - Bennett left and Romford were left with no option but to release the entire first team squad. The Club were finally able to return to Sungate in mid-January, and former reserve team manager Paul Withey was appointed to the first team. Early results were encouraging as the side posted three wins in four games, but as the fixture backlog increased with the continued wet weather the task of keeping the Club in Division One proved to be beyond everybody, with Boro having to play eighteen games in the final 33 days of the season. Sadly, despite an injection of fresh blood the poor run of form continued into the 2001-02 season and Withey was replaced as manager by Paul Joynes at the end of August. Although performances improved considerably, Boro still finished the season well adrift at the bottom of Division Two. Meanwhile several issues at Sungate were never satisfactorily resolved and the Club moved out mid-season, once again playing out the season on borrowed grounds and reluctantly forwarding its resignation from the Ryman League. A return to familiar territory in the Essex Senior League and back at Rush Green Road saw a strong recovery after the struggles of recent years, and Boro stayed on the edge of the leading pack all season, finishing fifth with a late-season run of form breaking several Club records. Paul Joynes took up an offer to return to the Ryman League
with Tilbury and popular former Boro player Mark Reed stepped in to replace him, emulating the previous season’s fifth-place finish after leading the table for two months, reaching the semi-final of the Essex Thames-side Trophy and adding the Gordon Brasted Memorial Trophy. In season 2006-07 Mark Reed lead us to our best season since rejoining the Essex Senior League as we finished runner-up to Brentwood Town, Boro were also runners up to the same team in the League Cup when we lost on penalties. Then during the 2007-08 season Mark Reed stepped down for personal reasons and the then reserve team manager, Paul Martin was promoted to the job with Mark Lord as his assistant. Romford moved up the table to finish in 5th place. The following season Romford had to leave Rush Green when Fords sold the ground to West Ham United. A ground share agreement was drawn up with Aveley FC and Romford were able to carry on. In Paul’s first full season in charge Romford took the Essex Senior League by storm, winning the title with 71 points and losing just one game, and with it promotion to the Ryman League Division 1 North. With consolidation and avoiding the drop straight back to the Essex Senior a priority Boro got off to a good start, winning two of their opening four games. Then a lean spell came along when they found points hard to come by. Some changes to the playing staff saw a revival in fortunes and the team rose to finish in 13th place with 15 wins under their belt. Kurt Smith finished top goal scorer with 15 goals. So a satisfactory first season for Paul Martin and his squad. The start of the 2011-12 season saw Romford get off to a flying start in the league and added good runs in both national cup competitions. They stayed in the first five positions up until the freeze during that year’s cold snap. When the grounds
thawed out it seemed lady luck had departed for pastures new. Despite the odd good performance Romford slowly dropped down the table to finish 12th. But it was still a one place improvement on the previous season. Season 2012-13 saw a strong finish and Romford finally end up in 8th position, their best performance since gaining promotion to the Ryman League. In the 2013-14 season Romford finished 11th with 69 points from 46 games, winning 21. Special mention must go to Chairman Steve Gardener (He’s been with us since 1992) and Vice Chairman Colin Ewenson for their tireless work to try and get our dream of our own ground up and running. The 2014-15 season started with a good F.A. Cup run which ended in a narrow defeat in extra time at Kingstonian. The rest of the season was a bit of a struggle with relegation worries that were ended when we won our last three matches. Last season proved to be a bit nerve wracking as our safety went down to the last day. We were 10 minutes from relegation in our last but one game until our relegation rivals succumbed at Heybridge Swifts. We had to win our last game and hope that Norwich United didn’t. With many of the supporters following the other game on their mobiles the tension was enormous, we beat Maldon & Tiptree 4-2 and then heard that Cheshunt had won 6-3 at home to Norwich. Safe for another season. After several very enjoyable seasons at Ship Lane Thurrock we had to move on again when Tommy South decided to sell the ground and retire. So here we are at another new home ground at East Thurrock. Our dream of going home to Romford is still in the hands of various organisations. Steve Gardner and Colin Ewenson are still working hard to make that dream come true. We live in hope!

MALDON & TIPTREE
CLUB HISTORY
In 2009, Ed Garty took over the ownership of Maldon Town from Michael Kirkham, whilst still in charge of running Tiptree United and installed Alan Brockhouse as Maldon Town’s new chairman. Following the takeover, Colin Wallington returned for a second spell in charge of Maldon Town, leaving his post as Tiptree United manager immediately. Colin previously managed Maldon Town from 2003 until 2007, having achieved promotion in the 200506 via the play-off final. Having left Maldon in 2007, Colin went on to manage Tiptree United where he achieved promotion winning the

Eastern Counties Division One title in the 2007/08 season. Until the conclusion of the 2009/10 season both Maldon Town & Tiptree United played their home games at Park Drive, under a ground share arrangement. In the summer of 2010, Maldon Town & Tiptree United amalgamated to form, Maldon & Tiptree Football Club, under the ownership of Ed Garty. As a result of the amalgamation, Tiptree United withdrew from the Essex Senior League, resulting in the club’s last ever fixture being a 3-1 defeat against Enfield 1893 on 24 April 2010. Maldon & Tiptree took
the place of Maldon Town in the Isthmian Division One North. Following the retirement of Colin Wallington, Assistant Manager, Brad King and Glen Knight were appointed as the clubs JointManager. As the pair’s first managerial role, the new club witnessed wholesale changes with only a handful of players remaining who finished the season with Maldon Town and Tiptree United, respectively. The 2010-11 campaign saw the new club remain in or around the play-off positions for the majority of the season, finishing in eighth
place to finish the season with sixty-three points. Despite the high turnover of players, the good standard of football was maintained and it was in the end, a disappointing end to the season, for the club to fall away in the later stages of the season when suspensions and injuries eventually took their toll to leave the club frustratingly short of the play-off positions at the end of April. The 2011-12 season, proved to not be so successful and in November 2011, King and Knight were relieved of their duties with immediate effect. Ex-Charlton professional Mike Flanagan was appointed as Caretaker Manager and remained in place until the end of the season, steering the club to a respectful mid-table finish, managing thirty-three games and finishing with a win percentage of 49.12%. At the start of the 2012-13 campaign, Ex-Stansted & Redbridge boss Terry Spillane was appointed as Manager, and Mike Flanagan departed the club. The change of management, once again brought wholesale changes with the playing squad. Ex Tiptree United manager, Jody was brought to the club as Terry’s Assistant Manager. After a fantastic and unbeaten start to the season, the club found themselves at the top of the table but an incredible run by eventual Champions Grays Athletic meant Maldon had to settle for a place in the play-offs – Terry’s side remained unbeaten until Boxing Day, when they lost away from home against local rivals Heybridge Swifts. Disappointment came in the play-off final however when they lost a two goal lead to draw with Thamesmead Town, who thenwent on to win the final,on penalties.
After a disappointing end to the previous season, Terry Spillane oversaw more wholesale changes in the playing squad, including the departure of Assistant Manager, Jody Brown. Despite the changes, Maldon finished in ninth position with seventy-six points, winning twenty-one games. More changes to the playing staff, resulted in poor start to the 2014-15 season, and the club parted ways with Spillane in September 2014, with Chairman, Ed Garty takeover as Caretaker Manager, for three games. At the end of September 2014, Alan Kimble was appointed as manager and remained in charge for the remainder of the season, however the side struggled and more changes in the playing staff occurred. Maldon finished the season in nineteenth place with only forty-nine points. During the 2014-15 season, Media Officer at the time, Richard Buckby ran a competition for supporters to vote for a club nickname, with the options The River Boys, The Marshmen, The Mudmen and The Jammers available. The vote took place in January 2015 and was featured on National Radio station, TalkSport, with the The Jammers winning the vote with over 50% and being confirmed as the clubs new nickname. Following the completion of the 2014-15 season, the club linked with Colchester United and the two clubs formed close ties, which resulted in ex Ipswich Town midfielder, David Wright being appointed as First Team Manager. Wright remained in charge until December 2015 as he was appointed Assistant Manager of Colchester United. Liam Bailey took charge of the First Team on
a temporary basis, only managing one game, which finished four-all against Tilbury on Boxing Day in 2015. Moving into 2016, exLeiston Manager, Steve Ball was appointed First Team Manager and steered the club to a respectable finish in the league table climbing to seventh place, only missing out on the play-off places by nine points. In the closed season, a change of Management at Colchester United saw Steve Ball appointed as their Assistant Manager, leaving his position of Maldon & Tiptree Manager as a result. Ex-Manchester City midfielder, Kevin Horlock was then appointed as First Team manager ahead of the 2016-17 campaign and for the majority of the season, the Jammers sat at the top of the table before slipping away to finish in second place. Horlock’s side managed to reach the play-off final, however lost to Thurrock one-nil. The following campaign was not quite as successful for Horlock, with Maldon finishing just outside the play-off places in seventh place, with sixty-nine points. After managing 112 games, Kevin Horlock departed in the closed season and was replaced by ex-Colchester defender, Wayne Brown. In Brown’s first season in charge, the 2018-19 season, the Jammers finished in second place and reached the play-off final, but lost on penalties against local rivals, Heybridge Swifts. The 2019-20 season was one to remember for the club, but for the right and wrong reasons. The club achieved great things in the Emirates FA Cup. Having reached the First Round proper of the competition, Maldon beat League Two side, Leyton Orient away from home, taking over 600

fans to the home of The O’s, with the goals coming from Danny Parish and a superb solo goal from Jorome Slew. In the second round proper, Maldon were drawn against Football League side, Newport County with the game being shown live on National Television– with the Jammers only beaten by the League Two side, with a goal in stoppage time, with the game finishing 1-0. A record attendance of 1876 was recorded. However, the 2019-20 season will also be remembered for the wrong reasons. After impressive performances on the field, the Jammers found themselves top of the Isthmian Division One North, thirteen points clear with four games in hand, when disaster struck. With a global pandemic declared, as a result of Coronavirus, the league competition was formally abandoned on 26 March 2020, with all results from the season being expunged, and no promotion or relegation taking place to, from, or within the division. The club were denied a chance of promotion and forced to remain in the Division One North for the 2020-21 season.
ED GARTY STEPPED DOWN AS CHAIRMAN IN OCTOBER 2020 Following the disappointing end to the 2019-20 season, Wayne Brown remained in charge of the club and wholesale changes in the playing squad occurred again, with a number of the previous season’s squad securing transfers to clubs higher up the football pyramid. The Jammers were dealt a big blow in October 2020 when owner and Chairman Ed Garty stood down from his position with immediate effect, ending a challenging ten years at the helm. After a period of uncertainty for

Just like the 2019-20 season, the 2020-21 campaign was terminated with promotion and relegation denied for all the sides competing in the Division One North. However, prior to the curtailment the Jammers had reached the Emirates FA Cup First Round for the second successive season, this time losing to Morecambe 1-0 in front of the television cameras. Brown’s side also achieved their longest ever run in the Buildbase FA Trophy, eventually losing to Gloucester City. The Jammers were only able to play in five league games, finishing in third place before the season was curtailed. Heading in to the 2021/22 season, Wayne Brown remains in charge of the first team and is now the club’s longest-serving manager, holding the record for the most games managed in charge of Maldon & Tiptree Football Club.
